RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc.

If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore.

If you need a Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed . You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 6 waters - that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours.

Cimmaron fire burns 25 acres in Dishman area; Level 2 evacuation order issued

The Spokane Valley Fire Department responds to the Cimmaron fire in the Dishman Hills area. (Courtesy of the Spokane Valley Fire Department)

A wildfire burning in the Dishman Hills area south of Spokane Valley has prompted evacuation warnings for nearby residents.

Spokane Valley fire crews responded to a 25-acre fire burning in a heavily timbered, steeply sloped area Monday, according to a Spokane Valley Fire Department Facebook post. The blaze - being called the Cimmaron Fire - was 80% “wet lined” with no containment as of 6:45 p.m.

Residents living in the areas of Appleway Boulevard on the north, 44th Avenue on the south, Sunderland on the east and Ghering on the west are under a Level 2 “get set” evacuation notice, according to an earlier Facebook post from the fire department. The department encouraged anyone with livestock, pets or needing extra time to leave sooner.

The Spokane Valley Fire Department, along with several Spokane County fire districts and the Department of Natural Resources were initially dispatched to the scene at 3 p.m. with as many as 75 firefighters and 25 units tending to the blaze with support from three air vehicles. Water and fire retardant were dropped over the area, according to a Facebook post by the department.

Fire officials expected evacuation warnings would be reevaluated around 10 p.m., said Lonnie Rash, chief of Spokane County Fire District 8.

There were no reported injuries or damaged structures, though firefighters were dispatched to protect 10 nearby buildings.

The fire was too hot Monday afternoon for crews to investigate the cause, Rash said. Firefighters expected to remain on the scene for the next 48 to 72 hours.

Rash noted that despite temperatures generally cooling and a recent short stint of rain, fire season lingers in the Spokane region.

“We have to remember that the firestorm in ’91 did not occur until mid-October,” Rash said. “We need to make sure with these above average temperatures that are coming out that people continue to be diligent as our students go back to school, as people are out in the community. The fire season is not done.”

Liverpool teenager steps up a level as midfielder makes impressive return

Kieran Morrison and James Balagizi caught the eye as Liverpool under-21s earned a Premier League 2 victory at Sunderland on Monday night

  • Facebook Icon

Kieran Morrison continued his progress as Liverpool under-21s responded to a difficult week by earning a victory at Sunderland. Morrison, a 17-year-old winger who has stepped up to the higher age group this season, scored one goal and had a hand in another as Barry Lewtas's side won 3-2 at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground on Monday evening.

James Balagizi, who had played for just 19 minutes since November, also found the target on his first appearance for the U21s since May 2023 after loan spells last season at Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock were hampered by injury.

Liverpool went into the game having suffered three successive defeats with heavy losses against PSV Eindhoven in the Premier League International Cup and at Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Trophy sandwiching a home Premier League 2 loss to Leicester City.

And the young Reds made the perfect start when a strong run from Morrison off the right in the eighth minute ended with a shot that was palmed out by Sunderland goalkeeper Kelechi Chibueze to Balagizi, who controlled the rebound then struck into the bottom corner.

The hosts took only five minutes to level when a mistake by Lee Jonas was pounced upon by Trey Ogunsuyi to race through and score.

After Ranel Young, playing as a centre forward, missed a chance to put Liverpool ahead, they were back in front on 28 minutes when Balagizi turned provider by bringing the ball out of his own half and then finding Morrison to finish from the edge of the area.

Sunderland pressed hard in the second half with Liverpool indebted to a Kornel Misciur save and Amara Nallo block before, on 81 minutes, Young made the game safe with a shot from a tight angle after being fed by Dominic Corness. Tommy Watson pulled one back for the home side during 12 minutes of additional time but the Reds held on.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Liverpool U18s delivered an improved performance but were eventually beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at the Carrington Training Complex in their U18 Premier League North clash.

Liverpool U21s are now not in action again until Sunday, September 22 when they entertain Derby County in Premier League 2 (kick-off 2pm). The U18s, meanwhile, are at home to Blackburn Rovers in the U18 Premier League North on Saturday, September 14 (kick-off 11am).

LIVERPOOL U18s (v Manchester United): Hall; Esdaille, Pitt, Pinnington, Williams; Lonmeni, O’Connor; Forrester (Evers 90), Cisse (Onanuga 69), Bradshaw; Sonni-Lambie. Subs: Bernard, Enahoro-Marcus, Ahmed. BOOKING: Sonni-Lambie.

LIVERPOOL U21s (v Sunderland): Misciur; Jonas (K Kelly 90+5), Lucky (Laffey 72), Nallo, Miles; Spearing (Pilling 46), Corness, Norris; Morrison, Young (Kone-Doherty 82), Balagizi. Sub: Trueman. BOOKING: Corness.
