Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Suggested Sailing Itineraries

Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary from mallorca,  day 1 : puerto andraitx (17nm).

Embark at the marina in Palma. In the afternoon sail to Puerto Andraitx.

 DAY 2 : Puerto Soller (25nm)

Puerto Soller is carved out between spectacular mountains and the only port on the rocky west coast. Take the tram to the old town up in the mountains.

 DAY 3 : Puerto Pollensa (35nm)

On the north coast where the wild rugged coastline gives way to many sheltered anchorages.

 DAY 4 : Cala Rajada (25nm)

A small fishing village and on a longer trip the gateway to Menorca, just 21nm away.

 DAY 5 : Cala D’Or (18nm)

A beautiful triple bay with pine covered hills and white sandy beaches.

 DAY 6 : Cabrera Island (30nm)

South of Mallorca, Cabrera Island is now a Nature Reserve with a beautiful bay for excellent snorkelling.

 DAY 7 : Palma (35nm)

Mallorca has ideal conditions for a sailing holiday with steady afternoon breezes from the north Force 3-5. Stronger  mistral  winds can blow from the north-west for a few days. The passages between the Balearic islands are more exposed. Summer temperatures average 26-30ºC.

We have rated this destination a 'Level 2'  (levels info)  and you will need RYA Day Skipper or ICC qualification for bareboat charters in Mallorca. Level 1 sailors can stick to the south and east coasts where it is more sheltered, level 2 can circumnavigate the island whilst level 3 sailors may want to head to Ibiza and Fomentera or Menorca.

Ramiro suerio.

He has been close to the sea all his life. From a very young age he sailed aboard the ANACEL, a 16-meter wooden motor sailboat that belonged to his grandparents, from whom he inherited his passion for the sea.

After graduating in Geography from the University of the Balearic Islands, at the age of 29 he embarked on one of the most important voyages of his life, crossing the Atlantic for 4 months, from Brazil to Mallorca on a small sailboat named DORIA. Since 2014 Ramiro is the skipper of KALORI, a Beneteau First 345 sailboat.

He has all the licenses and professional titles for pleasure boats and lives dedicated to share his passion for the sea.

British-flagged superyacht Bayesian sunk in Sicily was based in Mallorca

While divers scoured the wreck of luxury yacht Bayesian off Sicily’s coast today to find six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and a Morgan Stanley executive, following an intense storm that sank the vessel on Monday, it has been confirmed to the Bulletin by sources in the local nautical industry that she spent most of this summer in the Club de Mar, Palma, and Port Adriano in Mallorca . Furthermore, the Perini Navi sloop was refit in Mallorca in June 2016.

Launched in 2008 by Perini Navi, Bayesian is one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world and her mammoth mast supports a total sail area of almost 3,000 square metres. The yacht, which is about 50 metres long, sank when it was anchored off Porticello with more than 20 passengers and crew.

Initial work in the area has managed to rescue 15 people alive, including a one-year-old girl. The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-ft) superyacht, was carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello when it was hit by the fierce, pre-dawn storm. Fifteen people escaped before it capsized and the body of one person who died was swiftly recovered. That left six passengers unaccounted for - Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Morgan Stanley International non-executive chairman Jonathan Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and their two wives.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” which was lying 49 metres (160 feet) deep, Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters. This meant time beneath the waves was a limiting factor for the divers. “The biggest difficulty we have is due to the depth, which does not allow long times of intervention,” fire department diver Marco Tilotta told reporters. “We plan ... to search centimetre by centimetre.” Tilotta said the vessel appeared to be intact and was lying on its right side. Divers had not ascertained whether the 72-metre-long mast had snapped somewhere along its length.

LYNCH TRIAL

Lynch, 59, is one of the UK’s best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country’s largest software firm, Autonomy, from his ground-breaking research at Cambridge University and became known as Britain’s Bill Gates. He sold the firm to HP for $11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unravelled with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial. Lynch was eventually acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June.

Morvillo represented Lynch in the case, while Bloomer had appeared as a character witness on his behalf. In an apparent extraordinary coincidence, Stephen Chamberlain, Mike Lynch’s co-defendant in the trial, died after a road accident in Britain over the weekend, his lawyer said on Monday. The Bayesian was owned by Lynch’s wife, who survived the disaster , and other guests on the yacht included Lynch’s colleagues. The only body so far retrieved was that of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen. The British government’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it sent four of its inspectors to Sicily to conduct a “preliminary assessment.”

‘DIDN’T SEE IT COMING’

One expert at the scene of the disaster who declined to be named said an early focus of the official investigation would be whether the yacht’s crew had closed access hatches into the vessel before the storm struck. Investigators would look at whether appropriate measures had been taken, given the forecasts for bad weather overnight.

“We didn’t see it coming,“ the captain of the yacht, James Catfield, said of the storm, according to la Repubblica news website on Monday. Storms and heavy rains have ravaged Italy in recent days, after weeks of scorching heat warmed the sea temperature to record highs, raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts said.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,“ said meteorologist Luca Mercalli. “We can’t say that this is all due to global warming but we can say that it has an amplifying effect,” he told Reuters.
