SECOND GENERATION QUARTZ MODELS

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and Yema decided to invest heavily in the research and development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted in the second generation of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1977.

From 1988 until 2004 the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation was the owner of Yema. The Yema company was then bought back by French investers and renamed as ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’. For that reason a Seiko movement is used in a Yema watch during 88-94. In 1992 Yema sponsored the French team as competitor at the America’s Cup, with the launch of the Yema Yachtingraf America’s Cup France with a Seiko quartz movement.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The only French brand in this regatta-yachttimer overview is Yema. Founded in 1948 in Besançon (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France. The brand became fairly popular in France in the 1960’s and 1970’s with both consumer and military sales, including the watches related to the French space missions!

On March 3, 1967  Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’ . You can download the complete Swiss patent (CH 483.047) as a PDF here , or here if you prefer English (USA 3,427,800).

Yema patent US3,427,800 filed by H.L. Blum.

This resulted in the introduction of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1966. All together 6 different models (7 if you count type 6 in standard or jumbo case as two) of the Yachtingraf  were sold between 1966 and 1970. Type 1 (Valjoux 92), type 2 ( Valjoux 7733 or 7734) and type 3 (Valjoux 7734 with date) have a subdial counting the seconds at 9 o’clock, and an oversized 30 minutes subdial at 3 o’clock, divided into 6 differently coloured segments representing 5 minutes each.

Yema Yachtingraf, 3 versions, 3 different calibers.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 1.

  • Reference: the first model, rare, two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 92 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm
  • Year: 1966.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 2.

  • Reference: two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733 / 7734 movement.
  • Year: 1966/1967.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf  – type 3.

  • Reference: two subdials, and a date window at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7734 movement.

Type 4 and 5, the Yachtingraf Croisière models, have an extra third subdial at 6 o’clock with a 12 hour register. By means of a red cross over this subdial it counts double, up to 24 hours. Type 6 has an indicator disk underneath the dial, for an optimum countdown.

And the Yema Yachtingraf versions 4, 5 and 6.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière – type 4.

  • Reference: 92 001L. Silver subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock,
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 72 movement.
  • Year: 1969.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière   – type 5.

  • Reference: 9314. Black subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7736 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Régate  – type 6.

  • Reference: with a special indicator disk in stead of a hand.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733S movement.
  • Case size: either normal case Ø 39 mm or jumbo size Ø 44 mm.
  • Year: 1970.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate was available in two different case sizes, the first one with the black logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 39 mm and with a tachymeter along the outer edge of the dial, and a second version with the blue logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 44 mm. The last one is also referred to as Régate – Jumbo.

How the countdown function works:

Definitely type 6 is the most interesting one. It has a 15 minutes register at 3 o’clock, and a smal indicator disk that rotates under a special cut-out in the dial. The indicator disk moves every 30 seconds, jumping half a minute further to the start of the race.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock and two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset.

After a reset the countdown subdial shows 1-2-3-4-5 and red in the 6th small window. When the chronograph is activated at the first gunshot the countdown starts and the big white sweep hand is set in motion clockwise. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and so it does again after 60 seconds, now showing 0-1-2-3-4. A slide bar shows the first minute in blue. After the first 5 minutes of the countdown, when the second gunshot is fired, the 6th window in the dial takes over the countdown: 5 more minutes to go.

Again one minute later, with another 4 more minutes to go, the first window is showing red. Three minutes later, only 1 more minute to go, and 4 windows showing red. Then, as the final gunshot sounds, all 5 windows are red and the 6th window shows 0. Off you go!

Yema advertisement with the Yachtingraf-Croisière.

Variations:

The Yema Yachtingraf’s are unmistakable recognizable by their big colorful minutes countdown subdial, which is also well described in the patent listed above. And although they are not related to Yema in any way, several smaller watch brands have used the same subdial for a Yachting version of their watch. Probably with a license by Yema for the dial layout. The only exeption is the brand Le Jour, which was actually the North American rebranded distributer for Yema in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here are some examples:

Branded Alsta Le Jour Yachtingraf , Le Jour Yachtingraf   (US version) and Thermidor De Luxe Yachtingraf :

Branded Puerto Azul (without it’s bezel),  Technos Sportsgraph  (with a Landeron 248 movement) and Relide Spacemaster :

Branded Yachting Chronograph  (Valjoux 7733),  Jaques-Droz and Gallet :

Branded Datzward Seamagnum (Valjoux 7730), Lider Yachtingraf   (Valjoux 7733) and La Martine   (Valjoux 7733):

Branded Lunich Watch (Valjoux 7733), Dichi Watch (Valjoux 7730) and Wingo :

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and also Yema decided to invest heavily in the research en development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted among others in the second (quartz) generation of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1977.

In 1982 John Henry Belmont Jr. takes over as CEO of Yema from his father. But he has other plans with the company, and decided to sell Yema in 1988 to the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation. In 1995 Yema became a subsidiary to the Hattori-Seiko group under the name Yema S.A. It’s obvious that many of the Seiko movements are used in a Yema watch during that period.

In 1992 Yema is sponsoring the French team with skipper and helmsman Marc Pajot as competitor fort her America’s Cup (with yacht Ville de Paris).  For that occasion Yema launches the  America’s Cup France , with a Seiko 8M35 quartz regatta movement.

Different movement with three pushers, at 2, 4 and 8 o’clock:

And a third movement with two pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock:

From a more recent date are the Yema Yachting   models with an ISA 8270 movement, also quartz:

In 2004 the Yema brand is purchased by its CEO Louis Eric Beckensteiner, with financial help of the French Montres Ambre, a watchmaking and jewelry company. That makes Yema a 100% French watch brand again, with the name being changed into ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’.

For their 70th anniversary Yema announces in 2018 the Heritage collection, to pay tribute to the brand’s most iconic timepieces: a Superman, a Rallygraf, a Yachtingraf and a Flygraf. The Yema Yachtingraf Heritage is an almost identical copy of the Yachtingraf Crossière (type 5) from 1969. The first 1948 watches will be numbered.

YEMA Yachtingraf – THE COMPENDIUM

Yema – a wellknown brand in France, got a eventful history with some take-over. In the 60s Yema produced 300.000 watches per year.

1963 was launched the “Superman”, a 300m water-resistant Watch for professional diver.

1966/67 sold about 400.000 Yema watches. 1968 they constructed the 200m water-resistant Yachtingraf, with Valjoux movement.

The company still exist in other hands till today and produced Yachting watches with Quartz movement in the 80s till now. The Team of the Americas Cup (Marc Pajot, 1991) took the time with Yema watches for example.

But here is the overview of the Yachtingraf watches with real movements.  Feel free to send all comments, facts and things about them if you can add some information please!

Yachtingrafs with differend brand on the dial.

Some dials are known with different brands printed on.

Interesting one found on eBay in Uruguay – Yachtingraf with brand LIDER. Serial doesn´t fit in the line of 2compax Yachtingrafs.

Lider seems to be a brand of Borel Fiels & Cie. SA from Neuchatel, Switzerland or Montres Leader SA. Keep on research.

About the quality and known issues of Yema Yachtingraf watches

Just my point of view, please. Feel free to send my comments if you know something better. Just in case you looking for one to buy these points may help you. The Yema Yachtingraf watches got mostly problems on:

– pushers (not available, normaly screwed in but mostly glued with metall glue) – lumen (uneven made) and many are bad relumed – cases often polished to death – glasses not to find as NOS, no good substitutes – hands are not to find if there are not the original ones – dials could have paintloss or paint bumpinesses (subdials left too!) – bakelitbezels are mostly losses the paint (but that´s not a yema thing alone) – Alubezels are mostly sold as NOS on ebay from France as 70s, they fit perfect and looks good. You can see if it is a “NOS” one on the green triangle at 12, it looks different to the old ones – numbers on the casebacks: different, earlier seems to be upcounting, later ones got mostly the same numbers, unsure about some numbers too (Yema seems to put the numbers on other models too, still to prove) – unbranded bridges / movements – maybe an advantage for doing the service but you will never know if the movement is original built in the watch, only some LeJour got signed bridges

About the different mounted regattahands on the subdial

Wonder why 50% of all bubbles looks to 12 and the other half looks to 6? Simple explaination but very good usability for different types of the regatta countdown (5/10 or 15 min) you find here at the Club Yema , Jerry found out!

About the movements

Just to know: Valjoux 7730 is the 1966 following movement to the Venus 188 (built from 1948-1966) after the take-over of Venus from Valjoux in 1966. The main difference is the cheaper cam-switching instead of high-end column wheel. Yema was one of the first that uses the Valjoux 7730/7734/7736 as substitute for Valjoux 92/72.

Variants: height: 6,00/6,65 mm | diameter 14 line (31mm) | 45 hrs power reserve | 17 rubins | 28.900 A/h (4Hz) – all variants were built over 2Mio. pieces

7730: basic version, built 1966 – 1973, 175k pieces 7731: like 7730 but with new balance piston 7733: redesigned 7731 in 1969 with different reset hammers 7733S: 7733 with regatta-module disc drive 7734: date wheel, not quickset 7736: chronograph with 12 hrs counter (built 1969-1978) 7737: with 10min regatta countdown (for example in Memosail)

Bring a Loupe A Universal Genève 'Nina Rindt' And A Selection Of Other Chronographs Available On Ebay

This is your bring a loupe for july 7, 2017..

yachtingraf jumbo

This week, we focused on Ebay where we found some interesting chronographs, some with a few issues and others in stunning condition. We actually have two different Universal Genève: one Compax "Nina Rindt" and one Space-Compax that comes with original box and papers (but not the rubber pushers). We also included two Yema Yachtingrafs, and one Basmich Precision that definitely remains within the regatta theme as well.  This is your Bring A Loupe for July 7, 2017.

Universal Genève Compax "Nina Rindt"

The Universal Genève Compax "Nina Rindt" got its nickname from being worn by F1 champion Jochen Rindt's wife at the Formula 1 races  that she attended. This black and white Compax became a favorite among vintage collectors, and the price for a good one has consequently risen. The applied "U" logo shows that what we have here is an earlier "Nina Rindt", while the latere examples would exhibit a painted logo.

The Valjoux 72 chronograph movement of this watch is described as running properly, but the previous service history is unknown, as it generally the case with vintage pieces. The hands are described as original, and the 36mm case still bears the original "Dot-Over-Ninety" bezel. From the listing's photos, it seems that the plexiglass crystal was replaced, as it does not seem to bear the characteristic UG logo. Note that the piece was previously listed on Ebay at a Buy-It-Now of $21,999, and now returns under a bidding format.

Universal Genève Compax Valjoux 72

This Universal Genève Compax "Nina Rindt" is currently offered on Ebay with bidding reaching $9,100, two days before the end of the auction.

Universal Geneve Space-Compax Reference 885104

The Space-Compax also relies on the Valjoux 72 chronograph movement but shows a much bolder look than the Nina Rindt, starting with the red font on its dial, and its red chronograph hand. It originally came mounted on a bracelet, more Jubilee-looking than the present one. Although this bracelet is signed Universal Genève, it is different than the one found in the original documentation and appears to be a later example.

The pictures in the listing unfortunately do not show the dial very well, however there seems to be some aging to the sub-dials, and the lume dots are hard to spot. The contention than the steel pushers are original will be disputed (if not immediately refuted) as the Space-Compax is known to have had rubber pushers in both its first and second version. So we might also assume that the other example shown in the listing (taken from the 1994 dedicated Antiquorum auction) was equally incorrect. Lastly, the accompanying box and papers are UG-signed but it would be interesting to see if the serial number of the watch can be found on the guarantee, as the papers appear to be from later series production than the watch (and are as well as in two different languages) making us doubtful this is a true full set.

Universal Geneve Space-Compax Reference 885104

You can find this Universal Genève Space-Compax on Ebay at a Buy-It-Now price of $14,900, although the description "collector's or an investor's dream package" might be a bit exaggerated.

Yema Yachtingraf Croisière

This Yema Yachtingraf Croisière shares a common point with the Space Compax above: its chronograph pushers are also incorrect, as clearly stated in the Ebay listing. Otherwise, the Croisière  (Cruise in French) is notable for being the only Yema Yachtingraf with three sub-registers, thanks to the Valjoux 72 movement for the earlier version (which has a white sub-register for the running seconds ), and the Valjoux 7736 for the later one.

The present watch shows the second execution case, with its characteristic thinner lugs and aluminum bezel, and the serial number engraved on the caseback matches the known production batches. The manual-wound chronograph movement is described as working properly despite the obvious replacement pushers. The colorful regatta counter does not show excessive aging, as is also the case for the unique looking hour sub-register with its red-cross to indicate any duration over 12 consecutive hours, honoring the Croisière name of this model (after all a cruise lasts longer than a regatta).

Yema Yachtingraf Croisière Caseback

This Yema Yachtingraf Croisière is offered at a Buy-It-Now of $7,995; lower offers are also considered.

Yema Yachtingraf " Jumbo"

This later Yema Yachtingraf is often nicknamed the "Jumbo" after its oversized case that substantially grew from the 38-39mm of its predecessor to reach close to 43mm in the example here, with its distinctive C-shaped regatta countdown subdial. It is also identifiable by the blue ship printed above the patent pending mention, while earlier examples got a white ship. A couple of different Yema signatures were used during production, the present one being one of the most common.

A big feature of this Yachtingraf comes from its unique countdown counter, obtained through a modification of the common Valjoux 7733, now denoted 7733S (you can find a live countdown on this French forum ). The watch is described as functioning perfectly, and comes with what the seller says is its original strap in NOS condition.

Yema Yachtingraf Oversized counter

This Yema Yachtingraf "Jumbo" is advertised on Ebay France, with current bidding just above $5,000.

Basmich Precision Chronograph

While Basmich does not have the same brand recognition as Yema, this chronograph shares the regatta theme, thanks to the 5-minute sectors of its minute sub-register. It also displays a case-shape typical of the 1970s, with an interesting 12-hour bezel, and relies on the workhorse chronograph caliber Valjoux 7730.

Very few other examples have been found, assuming this example is of the same production as the one listed here , while another one  (if not the same) was also auctioned back in 2015. The stainless steel bracelet is unsigned, and is likely not original, although it looks great with this regatta chrono. The dial is very well preserved; its multiples scales remain clearly legible. The different patina of the lume may possibly indicate a relume of the handset at some point.

Basmich Precision Chronograph case back

This Basmich Precision chronograph is currently on Ebay, with bidding just above $500 and two more days to go.

The Surprising Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe for the Brand’s 75th Anniversary

What better way to celebrate an anniversary with friends than by offering them a tourbillon to enjoy.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe

Yema, the French watchmaker , has a history and a notable presence in the world of horology. Established in 1948, Yema is known for its diverse range of timepieces, crafted for various purposes, from diving to racing and aviation . One of the distinctive aspects of Yema watches is their fusion of functionality and style. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Yema introduces the Yachtingraf model, incorporating the intricate craftsmanship of a tourbillon with the functionality of a tide complication, catering to those who appreciate both technical innovation and practical utility.

yachtingraf jumbo

The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe harmoniously merges sportiness and elegance in its case design, predominantly brushed for a well-balanced aesthetic. With a water resistance of up to 100m, the case comes in steel or bronze, measuring 42.5mm in diameter and 12.3mm thick (14.5mm with the double-domed 2.20mm high sapphire crystal). The unidirectional rotating bezel is equipped with a sapphire crystal insert, graduated in 5-minute increments, and a triangular luminescent marker at 12 o’clock adds a touch of sophistication. The caseback is transparent to demonstrate the Tourbillon Maréographe movement’s architecture and finish.

yachtingraf jumbo

The black dial features a sunray finish and Super-LumiNova-coated applied indices. Indices, hands, and other elements are presented in matching colours depending on the case material. The Maréographe complication is positioned above the centre and introduces blue and red hues, with a small hand adorned with Yema’s logo indicating tide cycles. This hand points to high and low tides, making gradual half-revolutions every 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 7.89 seconds, completing a full circle rotation in approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes, passing Descendante – Marée – Montante indications. The tidal cycles, linked to the Moon’s gravitational forces during its rotation around the Earth, are precisely displayed by integrating lunar time to synchronize tides with local time.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe - 6

At 6 o’clock, the 60-second tourbillon of the Calibre Manufacture Morteau 30 (CMM.30) takes centre stage, embodying the same robustness that defines the timepiece. Designed by Olivier Mory, a French movement developer in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this calibre incorporates non-magnetic components, such as a non-metallic alloy hairspring, a Glucydur balance wheel with an adjustment mass made in gold, and micro-components manufactured with LiGA technology. This ensures the movement can withstand electromagnetic exposure up to 2,000 Gauss.

yachtingraf jumbo

The tourbillon cage bridge, free-sprung balance wheel, and shock absorbers make the CMM.30 impervious to shocks, vibrations, and accelerations up to 5,000 Gs. Adjusted in 6 positions, the CMM.30 guarantees near-chronometer accuracy between –3 and +7 seconds per day, all powered by a single barrel providing 105 hours of reserve. Among other achievements, Olivier Mory was responsible for developing a tourbillon-equipped calibre for the BA111OD brand, offering Swiss-made tourbillon watches at very attractive prices.

yachtingraf jumbo

So, it is no surprise that the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe is priced at EUR 9,990 . Yema will produce steel and bronze editions limited to 75 numbered timepieces each. The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe is worn on a comfortable strap made from premium rubber, closed by a steel or bronze folding clasp, depending on the case material. 1970s Yema jumbo Yachtingraf “White Ship”

This is one of the best examples of an extremely rare watch. From 1969, Yema produced a handful of regatta chronographs featuring a 10 minutes countdown instead of the traditional second chronograph disc. Based on a modified Valjoux 7733, these watches were produced in the strong and distinctive 850737 Yema case, thick, large (42mm) and with beautifully designed crown-guards.

It is commonly admitted that only 25 of them are known, which makes it a very hard catch. And as you will admit that the condition of the example we are offering is simply outstanding, we are not afraid to say that this one is among the bests, if not the best, examples out there.

Brand Yema Model Yachtingraf Regate “White Ship” Year Circa 1970 Case material Stainless Steel Movement Hand Winding Valjoux 7733S Diameter 42 mm

The watch is in outstanding condition. The very nice matte black dial is perfect, showing a crazy patina, perfectly matching the thick hands. The rotating bezel is in very nice condition and rotates freely as it should. The case looks excellent. It comes on a vintage NOS steel bracelet.

YEMA Yachtingraf Bronze | The last born of a long lineage

YEMA Heritage Bronz - Last born of a long lineage

For the Yema enthusiast that I am, each announcement of a coming new watch is an exciting matter, should I be disappointed or not by the product.

The Yachtingraf bronze chronograph that will be produced in a limited edition of only 200 numbered items couldn’t let me indifferent. YEMA agreed to lend me a prototype for a few days. I’m very pleased to share with you my impressions.

The YEMA Yachtingraf is a grail for the brand collectors. Its notoriety goes far beyond the borders of France. Consequently this review is also a good opportunity to have a little flashback before having a closer look at this brand new bronze version.

The YEMA Yachtingraf patent

The YEMA Yachtingraf story began on June 30, 1966 when Yema officially claimed in France its priority on the idea, first step in the patenting procedure that allows to have effects in other countries. For the US, YEMA filled in a demand in 1967 and the patent has been granted on Februray, 1969 with the number 3,427,800. Yema followed he same procedure in Switzerland. The patent was registered on December, 1969 under the number 483 047. At the end of the article, you will be able to download the three original documents.

YEMA Yachtingraf | US patent 3,427,800. February 1967

The patent’s document describes the invention in detail. Let’s try to explain it simply. Keep in mind that this patent is nothing but just an ingenious way to use a classical 30’ subdial. There is absolutely no modification of the movement.

YEMA Yachtingraf patent sketch. YEMA Yachtingraf patent sketch. ©JerryJerry

The main idea is that the countdown rules are different depending on whether you are sailing on the US coast or somewhere else in the world. Fore US races, the countdown is divided in 3 period of 5 minutes (blue striped, blue and red sectors on the left part. Elsewhere, the international rules are applied: the countdown is divided in 2 period of 5 minutes (blue and red sectors of the right part of the subdial). You’re sailing in the US ? You will follow the countdown with the bottom part of the hand which goes up from the left. On the contrary, you will use the upper “lollipop part” of the hand that goes down on the right if you’re racing according to the international rules.

And what of the last grey segment in the right side? Well… In fact, it’s useless. But if you have not crossed the starting line when the hand lollipop is in that sector, let’s say you might as well go to the nearest bar and have a beer, or even something stronger. Because you’ve just lost the race…

YEMA Yachtingraf | Its evolution trough the advertising campaigns

Rather than the very usual retrospective made of watches pictures, let’s go back in time through Yema advertising campaigns, which are a very rich source of information.

1967 | The YEMA Yachtingraf 9314 – First advertising campaign

yachtingraf jumbo

This advertising is quite easy to find, but with different prices for the watch. This one is the first that has been published for what I know. I have added the other side the page. I find interesting to have context information of what was happening at the same period.

Like exposed in the patent document, the Yachtingraf 9314 has a 60 seconds subdial at 09 :00 and a 30 minutes “countdown” register at 03 :00. This first Yachtingraf was very probably designed by Daniel Jacquinot who has been the style director at Yema during the 60’s and until 1975.

Regarding the versions, the “two subdials” Yachtingraf have been animated with a Valjoux 92 or a Valjoux 7730. Not obvious to distinguish them from each other without opening the caseback. However it seems that figures on the 60 seconds subdial are always written in a circular way (following the seconds marks) for the Valjoux 92 model, and mainly written horizontally on the Valjoux 7730 dial (I’ve sometime seen the other configuration). Considering this, the watch on this ad’ is most likely equipped with a Valjoux 7730. The Valjoux 92 Yachtingraf could have the 9312 reference rather than 9314. But I’m not 100% sure of this detail.

1969 | The Yema Yachtingraf 92.001 L – The Paris-Match & Elle advertising Campaign

Yachtingraf Croisière 92.001 L Advertising

The “three subdials” Yachtingraf have a 30 minutes register at 03:00, a 24 hours timer at 06:00, and a third 60 seconds subdial at 09:00. The 24 hours timer has two scales, allowing to follow the first 12 hours on the main scale, and the 12 following a simplified 15/18/21/24 inner scale.

This watch existed in two versions, respectively equipped with a Valjoux 72 and a Valjoux 7736. The Valjoux 72, the rarest, is easy to identify thanks to its two asymmetric pushers. Moreover, the 60 seconds subdial is white on the Valjoux 72 models, while the Valjoux 7736 model, more common, has got a black seconds subdial. Some rare dials have a “Paris” inscription under the central axe. Whatever the dial, the hours register at 06:00 is white, with a printed central red cross. From an aesthetic point of view, the Valjoux 7736 looks more elegant to me.

Regarding the pushers’ position and the white seconds subdial, the watch on the above publications is obviously the Valjoux 72 model. The advertising on the right side mentions the two subdials model under the reference 93.014.H, at a 420 Frs price. Here below is a colored representation of the 93.014.H Yachtingraf, on a same period collection catalog.

YEMA Yachtingraf 93014 L - 1969

1970 | First YEMA Yachtingraf “Croisière”. Partnership with the Official French Yachting federation

YEMA Official partner of the French Yachting Federation - YEMA Archives

This advertising comes from the YEMA company archives. I have selected it for multiple reasons.

  • In 1970, YEMA becomes the official partner of French Yachting federation.
  • It is the first advertising (as far as I know) where the “Croisière” naming is officially appearing.
  • The Yachtingraf is presented with new references, 92.101.M for the 3 subdials model (Price 550 Frs), and 93.114.A for the 2 registers model (Price 440 Frs)

A Yema Superman “1963” with the famous “scale” strap is presented. A Superman “1963” on a 1970 advertising is quite surprising. I’ve got my own idea about this, but it’s not really the point here.

1972 | The Munich Olympics games campaign…and French medals

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisiere Advertising

The French competitor Serge MAURY won the Gold medal in the Finn category, and the PAJOT brothers Yves and Marc won the Silver Medal in the Flying Dutchman mixt category. A good marketing asset for YEMA. Unfortunately, the Munich games were also mourned by the hostage taking and murder of 11 Israeli athletes by Palestinian terrorists.

Given the symmetric pusher positions the chronograph on this ad is likely equipped with a Valjoux 7736… but it could also be with a Valjoux 92 if we consider the white colors of the seconds subdial at 03:00. Hmm. Let’s say YEMA advertising were nor very rigorous nor faithful…

There is another questioning point on this ad. The price! At 485 Frs on a leather strap, the watch is 35€ less expensive than on the previous ad, and 85€ less expensive than on the 1969 advertising. A continuous price decrease during 4 years… As the early 70’s was a period of strong inflation, I have to confess there is something I don’t understand here. In case you have any idea, please let me a comment!

1974 | The YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière 92106 J “calendar”

YEMA Yachtingraf advertising 1974

This new version of the Yachtingraf appears on the above 1974 document, which announces to the authorized retailers network (HBJO stands for Horlogerie Bijouterie Joaillerie Orfevrerie) a massive multichannel advertising campaign (TV, Radio, Newspapers) during spring and summer. The punchline says “YEMA give spirit to watches”. And the promise is: “A bit of madness for a campaign that will trigger 200 million smiles… and the jubilation of all HBJOs who will never have sold so many YEMA”. Since then, the internet revolution has changed a lot in the retail distribution models…

Here is an extract of a May/June 1974 Flyer, presenting the YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière 92106 J. This is the last Yachtingraf designed by Daniel Jacquinot. New case shape, new bezel, first steel strap, date aperture at 06:00 (Valjoux 7734 inside). On the seconds subdial at 03:00, the figures following the curve of the dial hedge are back.

The watch price is now of 585 Frs. Price has come back to its 1969 level.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière 92106 J advertising

1975 | The YEMA Yachtingraf  Digital 93139 K AC. Patented model.

Goodbye Daniel Jacquinot. Thanks for the great watches you’ve designed during your years at YEMA! They still make the watch enthusiast joyful. Welcome to Jean Müller, who succeeded him at the head of YEMA design in September 1974.

Here is, on a 1975 (or 1976) flyer, the Yachtingraf Digital . This is one of the most efficient Yachting chronograph of the 70’s, with its modified Valjoux 7733”s”, and its countdown aperture, able to indicate every 30 seconds to the sailor the remaining time before the Start signal. Note the “blue ship” pictogram at 06:00.

YEMA Yachtingraf advertising 1975

It would be much too long to explain here the way this chronograph works. Just know there is a disc with 2 periods of 5 minutes countdown.

Wait, wait, wait… You will still find at the end of this review a file to download (in French or in English, you to choose) with an article that I published a few years ago about this countdown aperture on the French Forum FAM.

1977 | The YEMA Yachtingraf 93.003.6 AA

In 1977 Jean Müller created one of my favorite chronographs case middle. On the below advertising, 3 chronographs are presented with this case. Let’s call it the “The Müller’s watchcase”. Among them is the Yachtingraf 93.003.6 AA. (third from the left).

YEMA Yachtingraf advertising 1977

This watch will be quickly followed by a bigger chronograph, in a Jumbo case. Apart from the case difference, almost the same watch with tiny graphic variations (white ship pictogram for example).

And then came… The quartz revolution and the Matra Horlogerie adventure for the YEMA company. It’s another story. But the Yachtingraf never lefts the YEMA collection.

2019 | The YEMA Heritage collection

Let’s jump with both feet over 40 years of French watchmaking history during which the brand has decelerated and almost disappeared. In 2019, Yema is back! The new leaders capitalize on the iconic models of the past and launch a Heritage collection, which includes a Yachtingraf chronograph.

YEMA Heritage Collection 2019

I don’t like very much this chronograph. Unlike the other models which are quite faithful reissues of the original watches, this watch is a strange combination of elements that lack coherence in my opinion: a Yachtingraf “Jacquinot dial” with a Flygraf dial ring in a “Müller case”. However, I believe this is the most successful of the three chrono reissues. The very popular Superman is currently still in the catalog.

The YEMA Yachtingraf Bronze limited edition review !

You’ve read a lot until know. Time to rest! For this review, I promise you a maximum of pictures and a minimum of blabla.

A heavy bronze case

The YEMA Yachtingraf bronze case is thick. 14,5mm. 16,5mm with the domed sapphire crystal. You will not wear it with cufflinks… But after two days on my little 17cm wrist, it proves to be very comfortable thanks to its reasonable lugs to lugs length (48mm). The fine curved lugs help to hold it in place. That helps.

Nice to know: while preparing this review, I learned that bronze, being more malleable and less rigid than steel, can lead to thicker cases to ensure the desired level of waterproofing.

A Dual Time bezel

The unidirectional (120 clicks) dual time bezel of this Yema Yachtingraf Bronze is, in my opinion, an interesting change compared to the classical 60 mn bezels what have been done in the past. After all, the Yachtingraf patent has been thought for different time zones. Hasn’t it? And frankly, the original explanation of the 60mn bezel usage on the 1067 patent document is… Well. I let you make your own judgment if you have the courage to read it.

YEMA Yachtingraf Bronze Dual time bezel

Great Dial and hands.

YEMA really did a good job on the dial and hands. I hope my pictures will let you appreciate it. The matt black surface of the dial makes every information very readable. The white hands of the subdials and of the chronograph one are perfectly painted and clean. I appreciate the fineness of the Minutes and Hour hands. They give the watch a touch of elegance while remaining perfectly readable.

YEMA Heritage Bronz - Last born of a long lineage

The two microgroove subdials are very well done, with thin, precise and readable inscriptions. I just regret that the microgroove engraving is not more visible to the naked eye.

Now the question: why is the countdown dial on the left rather than on the right? As I explained on the beginning, the Yachtingraf patent uses a classical 30 minutes dial. On the Seiko NE86 which brings live to this watch, the minutes register is on the left. As far as I’m concerned, this is a pleasant and unexpected change.

I won’t go into too much detail so as not to weigh down this review, but the N86, with its column wheel and vertical clutch, offers a very good alternative to the classic Valjoux, while being very competitive in terms of price.

YEMA Yachtingraf Bronze minutes subdial-Jerry

The beveled date aperture, with gold coating as for the indices. The date disc is rather recessed compared to the surface of the dial. The date could probably be easier to read if the white of the numbers could be more intense and compensate for the inner shadow. The “Automatique France” inscription is discreet and balances the dial.

The 20mm wide black leather strap that I have tested is soft and comfortable. But the different layers of leather, simply glued, tend to separate. This is frustrating for a watch of this quality. I hope Yema will improve it for the production. Otherwise you will quickly have to change your strap. But don’t forget to reuse the original engraved bronze buckle!

YEMA Yachtingraf Bronze strap buckle-Jerry

My conclusion is very simple: as far as I’m concerned, I am totally conquered by this watch. This YEMA Yachtingrf Bronze limited edition is the worthy successor of its illustrious predecessors. It is not a simple reissue and brings something new to the Yema long story. It has the potential to become a “must have” very quickly. Le limited number of manufactured watches could help.

And you? What do you think about it? Do not hesitate to comment this article in order to share your opinion.

-SOLD- YEMA Yachtingraf Jumbo first Execution from 1970

Description, additional information.

  • Reviews (0)

Collectors piece! Extremely rare YEMA Yachtingraf Jumbo first execution in like new condition from 1970. The case is unpolished showing next to no signs of wear. The dial is absolutely mint and has developed a wonderful patina. The movement (Val. 7733S) has just been checked by my watchmaker and is running flawlessly. More information on request.

Shipping Info

Shipping Charges (Express Courier Service - tracked and fully insured) - Within Europe: 40 Euro and 1-3 working days - World Wide: 80 Euro and 3-6 working days (we ship a lot to customers in the US and Singapore) We recommend the Express Courier Service as its much more reliable than a regular post office parcel. If you decide to buy multiple watches for long term investment purposes, shipping is only charged once. On average it takes us one or two working days to get the watch shipped. (We need to get it out of the bank vault, do a last check on proper function, pack it carefully and professionally and take it to the courier company. After the watch is shipped, you will automatically receive a tracking link so you can follow your parcel.)

Payment Method

You can place the order directly through the checkout system of our website (by pressing the green "buy button" to the right of the watch pictures). This checkout takes usually only 3-5 minutes and no registration (and also no login) is needed. You can choose between bank transfer, credit card (Master Card and Visa), paypal (+3.5%) or a cash payment when meeting personally in Vienna as payment options through this website checkout. Some customers prefer to pay through bank transfer (bank wire) by simply exchanging bank and address details via email. This is still possible as it was our first and only payment option when we started the company in 2013. Ironically, its still the most used.

100% Customs Free within the European Union

You live within the EU: We ship from Vienna (Austria) and shipments are 100% customs free to all countries within the EU. There are zero additional import duties. We guarantee for this. Examples for such EU-Countries are: Germany, France, Sweden and many more. We ship with DHL Express to these Countries. Again: shipments to all EU-Countries are 100% free of import duties.

You live outside of the EU (in the USA or Asia): If you live in Switzerland (about +20%), England (Brexit) (about +20%) Norway, the USA (about +0-10%, depending on state-law, Japan (about +10%) customs fees (also called import duties) need to be paid. We ship a lot to these countries and are very experienced in handling all of the customs paperwork for you. This is a big relief for most customers. These customs fees need to be paid by the receiver of the parcel, usually when the Fedex delivery man hands it over on the doorstep. Vintage Portfolio is an official company and we cant under-declare watches as this would break the law. Also, it does not pay off in the long run, neither for the customer nor for us to cheat customs, as the punishments are extremely high for doing so. Please don’t even ask us to put a wrong value onto the parcel. That said, its absolutely possible to have a watch shipped customs free to friends and family within the EU. (In this case we of course believe that you will pay the necessary duties if you choose to pick up the watch and take it outside of EU territory, but this is then neither our matter nor our responsibility to check on any more.)

Return and Refund Policy

We accept Returns, if the watch is not as described. We also accept returns if you don't like the watch at all immediately after receiving it. You can choose whether you want to exchange it for a different watch or get your money back.

“The watch has arrived, and I love it! It is even better than the photos. Thank you very much for your speedy response to my questions and helping with this excellent purchase! I am excited to continue collecting and continue doing business with you.”

“First of all, it’s never easy to fully trust someone on internet the first time that you deal with. Afterwards, I have to admit that I am now reassured and extremely pleased by the quality of your sales services. Many thanks for the information which is for me another proof of the conscientious of your company.”

“As a rather frequent customer I´m more then pleased with the quality of each and every piece I purchase. “The watch just arrived (3 days only!) in perfect condition… It is very beautiful watch, in very good conditions, a little wonder 90 years older, and the dial is a true work of art. I am a private collector (Professor of law at Lisbon University) and have lately been selling part of my collection to buy these older watches (from the 30s and 40s) which are quite unusual and historical pieces…”

“I wanted to let you know I have received the Breitling Top Time and I love it. Just as you described and communicated in your emails. Thank you for making my first vintage watch purchase such a great experience.”

“I just wanted to send you some feedback for anyone that is interested in purchasing any of the fine time pieces that your site offers… I’m very happy at how beautiful the Omega Seamaster I purchased looks. I’m currently wearing it and have been since it arrived and I must say it keeps excellent time… You’ve just earned yourself a life long client.”

“Without question, the best on-line transaction I have experienced. When the strap broke early on, he sent me three additional straps to choose among and keep. This is incomparable support and commitment to customer service. A+ dealer. I would purchase from Maxmillian again and again.”

Contact us via email, describe your issue and we will help as soon as possible and to the best of our abilities. Until now, we never left a customer behind and have no intention in changing this attitude in future. (Before you get in tough please dont forget to actually read the english “single page” user manual for your watch which will be inside the parcel, right beside the company invoice. Most questions will be already answered this way.)

We acquire watches mainly from collectors that built up a collection throughout their life and at some point decide to sell their watches, for instance, if their children don't pay attention to watches. Our trade margins are small as we operate as an online shop so we can pay well for good collections.

Ploshchad Lomonosova (Lomonosov Square)

This square was created by the great architect Carlo Rossi . It is framed by a large architectural ensemble comprising of Ostrovsky Square , Alexandrinsky Theatre , and Theatre Street (now Ulitsa Zodchego Rossi ). Therefore, to get acquainted with Lomonosov Square is to get acquainted with these places as well. Only then will the curious gaze of visiting eyes really capture one of the city's best ensembles of high classicism in all its glory.

In the 18th century this was an empty space serving as the backyard of the Anichkov Palace near Chernyshev Lane. In the 1820s, the reconstruction of the territory was entrusted to Rossi. He designed a semi-circular area surrounded by several similar buildings. They housed the Ministry of Education of the Russian Empire and the Ministry of the Interior. Over Chernyshev Lane Rossi created one of his favorite arcs. The square itself was named Chernyshevsky.

In the late 1870s a park was built in the center of the square that was named in honor of the great Russian polymath and scientist Mikhail Lomonosov . In 1892, a bust of Lomonosov by sculptor Parmenas Zabello was placed in the park. Therefore, it is not surprising that in 1948 the square was renamed after Lomonosov, as well as Chernyshev Lane and Chernyshev Bridge over the Fontanka River.

At old 400 Beach in St. Petersburg, a new restaurant and cocktail bar

  • Helen Freund Times staff

ST. PETERSBURG — The restaurant on the corner of Fifth Avenue North and Beach Drive NE has sat vacant for months. It’s been anyone’s guess whether 400 Beach Seafood & Tap House was undergoing extensive renovations or closed forever.

A little of both, it turns out: 400 Beach, which closed last June, won’t reopen. Instead, the space will soon become Juno & The Peacock, a new coastal American restaurant, and Pluma, a cocktail lounge, both from the team behind nearby Mediterranean spot Allelo.

The restaurant and bar, which are slated to open this summer, come from longtime Pinellas County residents Shawn and Jeanna Damkoehler, who in 2021 purchased the business from then-owner Steve Westphal and kept it open until 2023. At the time, the couple had also bought Beach Drive restaurants Annata and Alto Mare, which they later closed and reopened as Allelo.

When Westphal first opened 400 Beach in 2009, St. Petersburg’s dining landscape looked very different, and the restaurant helped cement Beach Drive as a destination for both tourists and locals. But the spot hadn’t undergone many changes throughout the years, and was in need of a refresh. Though the Damkoehlers revamped the menu after purchasing the business, they decided a full overhaul — and concept change — was in order.

Those efforts are emblematic of the pair’s contributions to the downtown St. Petersburg strip — Allelo has proved particularly popular, both with critics and diners — and what they see as a much-needed revitalization of the area.

“Having lived here all my life, I am incredibly proud to contribute to the growth of St. Pete and bring new dining experiences to my hometown,” Jeanna Damkoehler said in a prepared statement.

The couple tapped creative studio Brand Bureau and the award-winning New York-based firm AvroKO to design the space, which will feature both the restaurant Juno & The Peacock (named for the cautionary Aesop fable) and a separate cocktail lounge called Pluma. Between the two, the spaces will include indoor and outdoor seating for close to 270 people. Framed by lush foliage and planters, the shaded outdoor patio will evoke European-style cafe seating, while the dining room will skew more formal, with an inlaid terrazzo floor and brass accents throughout.

The menu at Juno & The Peacock will focus on contemporary American fare with coastal influences, and include a list of dry-aged steaks, seafood towers and Maryland-style crab cakes. Though the menu is distinct from its predecessor, there are a few holdovers from 400 Beach that will make an appearance with some updates, including the restaurant’s popular Grouper Oscar.

The restaurant’s cocktail program, which is separate from the program offered at Pluma, will hone in on the classics, with modern takes on drinks from every decade, including espresso martinis and Singapore Slings. At Pluma, guests can expect a Latin-inspired cocktail menu — think Peruvian pisco concoctions and drinks that nod to Tulum, Mexico. Allelo’s general manager and wine director Michelle Richards will design the restaurant and bar’s wine program, which will include more than 1,400 wines, focused primarily on New World regions.
