Azimut reveals Seadeck series

Inspired by Benetti’s Oasis Deck, Azimut has developed the Seadeck series, kicking off with the world premiere of the Seadeck 6 in January 2024.

Azimut will stage the world premiere of the Seadeck 6 at Boot Dusseldorf from January 20-28, 2024, with the model to be followed by the Seadeck 7 and Seadeck 8 “between 2024 and 2025”.

Seadeck is Azimut’s first line of hybrid motor yachts and its most efficient series to date, with technological solutions that reduce emissions by up to 40 per cent compared to a traditional flybridge boat of similar dimensions, according to the Italian builder.

Signature features include the ‘Fun Island’, a reinvented aft terrace with side decks developed in collaboration with Alberto Mancini, as well as Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez, making their debut in the world of yachting.

Over half of Azimut’s fleet is now made up of Low Emission Yachts, models that deliver a 20-30 per cent reduction in emissions. The Seadeck range builds on these efforts, moving closer to the CO2 emissions containment target set by the International Marine Association (IMO) ahead of the 2030 deadline.

Seadeck is the first series of models from 60ft up that integrates Volvo hybrid propulsion, onboard systems designed to reduce energy consumption and solutions to cut emissions, and a state-of-the-art battery pack. Featuring more than 40 per cent carbon-fibre surface, the planing hull is the most efficient built by Azimut.

The ‘Fun Island’ offers an aft-facing island sunpads in the cockpit as well as an outdoor lounging space that connects with the saloon, which all become one connected social area when the sliding doors are opened.

Giovanna Vitelli, Chair of Azimut-Benetti Group, said: “Seadeck is a new starting point for future generations. We wish, once again, to chart a course that will be an inspiration for the entire industry, so that the theme of respect for the environment is interpreted – as it is for Seadeck – with a concrete approach made up of investment, technological research, and the courage to introduce a new lifestyle that embraces the sea.”

To create the Seadeck Series, Azimut worked Mancini as well as, for the first time, Thun and Rodriguez.

Mancini said: “We wanted to create a boat that puts maximum emphasis on the concept of openness and transparency, and that also represented a radical change in terms of the relationship with nature. With the introduction of the Fun Island, Seadeck is actually a floating island where owners can get away from their daily routine and live in total contact with the sea.”

In their interior design concept, Thun and Rodriguez “work by subtraction to reveal the heart of a space where it’s easier to feel good, a redefinition of luxury based on wellbeing and the choice of natural or recycled materials”. As an example, cork – an age-old Mediterranean material capable of spontaneous regeneration – is used to replace teak.

“We prefer to talk about consciousness rather than sustainability, a philosophy that determines our way of practising architecture,” the design duo explain. “We try to work by subtraction, because reduction means durability, both technical and aesthetic. “And a boat must stand the test of time and be beautiful forever.”

THE FUN ISLAND: A surprisingly spacious and versatile stern area introduces the new concept of the Fun Island, an unprecedented open-air lounge au fil de l’eau, designed to experience the large spaces in total freedom and comfort. The entire Main Deck is transformed into a large space that offers the possibility of interacting with everyone, even with those in the water, breaking down the last physical and social barrier. It is the real and symbolic space of «fun». The Fun Island is completed by two opening wings and an aft platform that reveals a large staircase that descents into the water.

A CONCEPT OPEN TO NATURE: Alberto Mancini creates an innovative concept, in which from the very first sketches the exterior naturally interacts with the interior. The lines evolve from dynamic to sinuous and essential, tracing the infinite space of the Fun Island, for an authentic contact with nature and an extreme freedom on board.

A GENTLE DESIGN: Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez apply the conscious philosophy that distinguishes their approach to architecture in the interior design. At the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024, Azimut and Volvo Penta are unveiling the world’s first yacht to combine Volvo Penta IPS with hybrid power. The new Seadeck 7 is equipped with Volvo Penta’s helm-to-propeller hybrid-electric package, piloted for the first time in collaboration with Azimut.

The Seadeck 7: A world-first in hybrid power and Volvo Penta IPS propulsion

Azimut introduces the Seadeck 7, the world’s first yacht to combine hybrid power with Volvo Penta IPS propulsion, based on revolutionary Volvo Penta hybrid-electric pilot technology. This marks the first time a yacht combines diesel engines, electric motors, and batteries with the efficiency of Volvo Penta IPS drives, allowing hybrid operation without a generator. The Seadeck 7 can cruise in pure electric mode up to 11 knots and stay at anchor with zero emissions for up to 12 hours, with the aim to significantly enhance onboard comfort and sustainability.   "When it comes to reducing CO2 emissions, our approach is aimed at generating tangible results now, also by developing new solutions that we are already implementing at a prototype stage. Boats under 24 meters are the most prevalent in our waters, therefore making a difference in this segment of vessels means making a difference for many owners. The Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package installed on the Seadeck 7 has a mode of use similar to that of cars, meaning that it shifts from electric to diesel engine based on speed. It guarantees simplicity of use, reduced consumption and CO2 emissions, and improved life on board. Everything is in place to change the rules of the game,” said Giovanna Vitelli, Chair Azimut|Benetti Group.

Closer to nature: The seamless hybrid-electric experience

In this pilot project, Volvo Penta introduces a fully integrated hybrid-electric package, from helm-to-propeller, ensuring seamless operation and power management on the Seadeck 7. This system, a pilot of Volvo Penta’s recently announced D13 IPS hybrid-electric package, guarantees smooth transitions between power modes, enhancing performance, efficiency, and ease. Features include near-silent cruising at low speeds, silent nights onboard using batteries, and Joystick Docking in Electric Mode for smooth docking and departure. The system also facilitates access to emission-free zones, allowing closer encounters with nature. 

Compared to traditional planing yachts with an inboard shaft line and a similar size, the Seadeck 7's technological package, extensive use of carbon fiber (up to 40%), and superior hull design efficiency can allow for a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 40% in a typical year of use.   Pioneering marine innovation together

This collaboration with Volvo Penta and Azimut | Benetti R&D Department aims to refine the hybrid-electric experience. The Seadeck 7, equipped with the hybrid-electric package, introduces new electric and hybrid drive modes, supported by advanced engine monitoring and Volvo Penta’s global service network. This collaboration highlights both companies' dedication to advancing marine technology and innovative yacht design.

By combining weight reduction, a carbon fiber hull, deck and superstructure, and Volvo Penta's hybrid-electric system, the Seadeck 7 enhances comfort and space. The Seadeck 7 has obtained the Rina Green Plus Platinum certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainable innovation and design.

A seamless and serene on-water experience

The Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package on the Seadeck 7 combines the range and speed of traditional engines with seamless transitions, reduced noise, and enhanced comfort of electric mode. This hybrid experience offers smooth cruising, an electric boost in acceleration, and excellent driveline response. The extensive battery bank supports off-grid living, providing a close-to-nature experience on the water. The package also features Joystick Docking in Pure Electric mode, which is smooth, responsive, and facilitates ease. Electric cruising at low speeds allows closer proximity to nature and access to protected areas. During nights at anchor, the system enables silent, comfortable off-grid mooring, with batteries recharged during the voyage or while docking.

Flexible power modes for every situation

The hybrid-electric package offers four navigation options: Pure Electric mode for zero-emission sailing up to 11 knots, Hybrid Standard mode switching from electric to diesel, Hybrid Boost mode for enhanced acceleration, and the upcoming Cross-over mode. In Hotel mode, the batteries power all services for up to 12 hours in silence and without CO2 emissions, eliminating the need for a traditional generator.

A fully integrated hybrid-electric system

The Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package is fully integrated, with Volvo Penta controlling all components from helm to propeller. The Seadeck 7 features a twin Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1350 Hybrid package, paired with a 160kW electric motor, ensuring powerful performance, maneuverability, and efficiency. The electric motor and diesel engine work in parallel, allowing seamless transitions and efficient operation.

Pioneering hybrid-electric features

The hybrid-electric package integrates intelligent technology, including the Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) and innovative drive modes. These enable Joystick Docking, Joystick Steering, and Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) in both Pure Electric and Hybrid modes. The Glass Cockpit System provides an interface displaying drive modes and battery status. The EVC system allows engine monitoring, and data sharing, ensuring premium support through Volvo Penta’s global service network.

Volvo Penta and Azimut – A commitment to excellence

Volvo Penta and Azimut will continue to develop and optimize the hybrid-electric package on the Seadeck 7 throughout 2024. This pilot project aims to demonstrate reliability and outstanding performance as the package is targeted to become integral to the Azimut Seadeck series, offering a market-defining hybrid-electric experience. The Seadeck 7 is available for pre-order, with delivery starting in 2026. The Seadeck 7 is on display at the Cannes Yachting Festival from 10th to 15th September 2024.

Azimut is coming out all guns blazing at Cannes Boat Show with not one but three new show debuts. The freshest of these is the Seadeck 7, which was still having the finishing touches applied to it as we write this.

Like its smaller sibling, the Seadeck 6 , which was launched earlier this summer, the Seadeck 7 has a strong focus on sustainability and will be the first Azimut to feature a full diesel electric hybrid drive. Technical details of this have not yet been released but it’s likely to use Volvo Penta IPS drives and D13 engines linked to a smaller electric motor and battery pack for silent manoeuvring and low-speed cruising over short distances.

It’s not just the drive system that contributes towards a claimed 40% reduction in emissions. Extensive use of carbon fibre and a vacuum-infused hull keeps weight down for improved fuel efficiency, while reconstituted cork decking and carpets made from recycled plastics reduce the consumption of virgin raw materials.

Sliding side doors provide a closer connection with the sea

The design follows the template set by the Seadeck 6 with softer lines that reflect its focus on relaxation and a closer connection with the sea. At the heart of this is Azimut’s ‘Fun Island’ featuring a drop-down staircase into the sea and folding platforms on either side of a central sunbed and dining area. The starboard one even has fittings for a hammock stand built into it.

Best Superyacht: Sanlorenzo 57Steel

Versatility is an indispensable currency in the world of yachting . When you’re spending hours on board, you’ll want an intimate and opulent space that can satisfy any whim—be it an expansive outdoor area for entertainment or a gym for keeping fit. Sanlorenzo’s 57Steel has it in abundance— although it may not be readily apparent at first. Designed by Bernardo Zuccon of Zuccon International Project, the 186ft superyacht looks narrow from head on, its straight bow lending it a sleek and tapered silhouette. But don’t let that fool you: the steel exterior, characterised by straight lines and layers, houses an impressive 1,050 gross tonnage and five decks, providing the superyacht with an inordinate amount of space for personalised amenities.

Sanlorenzo achieves this by optimising every inch of the yacht’s layout. From relocating the wheelhouse (normally situated at the bow of the upper deck) to the bridge deck, to placing the garage at the bow, the Italian shipyard is able to free up space and offer owners a plethora of customisation possibilities. There’s also the option of equipping it with a hybrid diesel/electric engine system that lets you cruise the sea at 11 knots while minimising your impact on marine life.

Best Gigayacht: Kismet

The latest and largest Kismet is the third yacht of the same name for Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan. At 400ft, it’s 88ft longer than its predecessor, though it shares flash features such as a basketball court on the helipad, video walls, wild chandeliers and a silver jaguar inlaid into the bowsprit. The interior by Reymond Langton is tastefully flamboyant. The full-beam, two-level owner’s apartment is accented in gold, tempered by the fireplace, marbled bathrooms, dressing rooms and an enormous skylight above the bed. Other over-the-top features include a cryotherapy chamber, a Bogányi grand piano on the upper deck, and a Tron Corridor with a dance floor that flashes pink and blue. The cinema may claim the Khan prize for coolest feature. Under the 150-inch television is a Nemo Lounge, a window to whatever is swimming outside.

Best Megayacht: Ultra G

This Heesen, one of the fastest yachts in its class, is powered by MTU diesels with a total of 22,000hp, connected to four water jets, that deliver a top speed of 37 knots. Speed is essential for the angling-obsessed owner to reach cruising grounds 161km offshore. But even with a fishing platform and an angler’s lounge (with screens showing live underwater feeds), the owner refers to Ultra G as a fast superyacht rather than a sportfisherman. That’s one reason why we chose this 197-footer—its speed doesn’t compromise comfort. The other is the Harrison Eidsgaard interior, which features a full owner’s bridge deck with an aft-facing suite, private terrace and whirlpool. The yacht’s media room includes a cinema and games table, and in addition to the requisite sauna and steam room, the wellness area boasts a snow room. A surprising architectural highlight: the central staircase that winds through a glass-topped atrium.

Best Sailing Yacht: Nilaya

The owner of 154ft Nilaya is a sailor who owned a previous yacht with the same name, but some 39ft shorter. The prime directive this time around: comparable performance but without the noise of the other boat’s carbon-fibre hull. “He wanted to explore the world, but in a lightweight yacht that wins regattas,” says designer Mario Pedol of Nauta. The new Nilaya was builder Royal Huisman’s first Featherlight racing yacht in lightweight aluminium. Its engineers used a computer-modelling tool based on technology from the European Space Agency for designing the structure, saving weight and abating noise wherever possible. The build was a gamble, but the result is a fast, stylish superyacht for racing and cruising. In the latter mode, three deck areas and a beach club accommodate gatherings, while below-decks are dining and social areas, guest staterooms and the full-beam main suite. The owner has already crossed the Atlantic twice aboard Nilaya and also claimed a win in the St Barths Bucket, fulfilling both missions.

Best Dayboat: Azimut Verve 48 Outboard

Packing 1,800hp with three 600hp Mercury V12 outboards, Verve 48 has an invigorating top end of 92km/h. That speed, along with its open exterior and stepped hull, predestine Verve 48 for hot, sunny waters. Features such as the foldout rear deck that lifts to become an al fresco dining area and the large asymmetrical social area in the bow cement Verve 48’s status as a dayboat. Its carbon-fibre construction, smart helm and full exterior galley are major distinguishers among its competitors. The two-stateroom cabin also has a head, separate shower and dinette for cruising potential, but at heart Verve 48 is a fast, fun, high-end entertainment platform for family and friends.

Best Innovation: Bluegame BGM75

Bluegame’s decision to create a power catamaran with a narrower beam had multiple knock-on effects. Aesthetically, BGM75 has a svelte profile, unlike the typical boxy look of most in the category. There’s also excellent space for the main salon, measuring 27 ft across, while the designers extended the guest staterooms into the boat’s mid-section rather than squeezing them into the multihulls. The full-beam main suite is perhaps the best argument for the approach, incorporating a sizable bedroom and large en suite across the front of the boat. The twin hulls also multiply the BGM75’s efficiency, with the Italian builder claiming it burns 30 pe rcent less fuel than a 90ft monohull with a similar volume. A minimalist helm, spacious flybridge and full-beam tender garage put it in a category of one. Best Weekender: Bolide 80

In this current era of sustainability, Bolide 80 is almost defiantly petrolicious, a water rocket powered by triple 2,000hp MAN engines that hits 138km/h. But speed is just one facet of a vessel that is equal parts art and engineering, all wrapped in an 81ft, 7-inch carbon-fibre hull. Victory Marine’s Hyper Muscle Yacht looks fast even sitting still, the lean profile noteworthy thanks to its unusually long forefoot and curved, swept-back stern with side wind scoops. The cockpit is stylishly functional, and the helm has the requisite space-age look with large displays. And the interior is different from anything else on the water. The burnt-sienna leather walls, with light strips set into the ceiling, are combined with notable features such as a leather Pullman-style dresser and carbon-fibre arches. Bolide 80 isn’t an everyman vessel, but its build quality, design and performance make it one of the most interesting we’ve seen in years.

Beach Club: Leona

The Red Bullet, as Bilgin’s 263ft Leona was nicknamed by one of its designers, has an interior dripping in exotic custom materials. But H2 Yacht Design saved the most outrageous features for the inimitable beach club—once you see it, you can’t forget it. The 28ft, blue-tiled swimming pool is surrounded by Aphrodite-style statues along with marble fountains and backlit wall panels. Natural light floods through three shell doors when open, creating a faux-Grecian sea terrace. When closed, a starry night sky comes into view, courtesy of the glittering fibre-optic ceiling. Of course, any beach club of this calibre would have to include a shisha smoking lounge, a wellness area with gold- coloured furniture, and a gym with a mirrored, leather-trimmed ceiling. Treatment rooms and a sauna are also part of the lower-deck complex, while a post-swim movie can be enjoyed in the adjacent cinema lounge covered, naturally, in ruby-red velvet.

Best Comeback: H3

Returning to Oceanco for a rebirth 22 years after its delivery, the 345ft H3 received a 33ft hull extension— 26ft at the stern and 7ft to the forward deck line—plus a remodelled superstructure and an entirely reimagined interior. The yacht was originally launched in 2000 as Al Mirqab and later renamed Indian Empress before the current owner enlisted UK firm Reymond Langton to transform the formerly boxy boat into a sleek and modern gigayacht. The extra length now holds a large pool aft, with a waterfall and a bottom that raises to become a dance floor. H3 also has more accommodations for the 32 crew, and a full-beam VIP suite that doubles as a second primary. The interior includes a 33ft-long video corridor and an LED ‘tech window’, both of which are softened by custom leather wall panels, bronze and nickel detailing, and backlit infinity mirrors. Perhaps the most impressive statistic? Sixty per cent emissions reduction following the refit.

Azimut unveils the Grande 30M and Seadeck 9, promising an emotion never felt before with each new model. The involved designers play an important role in this achievement: m²atelier, in their first collaboration with the Shipyard, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez and Alberto Mancini.

During the press conference held at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023, Azimut reaffirmed the foundation of its design philosophy:  build experiences that evoke extraordinary emotions . The mission has grown from its roots in the Shipyard’s DNA and in the vision of Paolo Vitelli, strengthened by an ambitious promise: to introduce, with each new model, an innovation that allows you to experience the yacht or an environment like never before, discovering unexpected passions and sensations. Azimut’s Head of Product Design  Federico Lantero  revealed the brand’s new projects,  Grande 30M and   Seadeck 9 .

The  Grande 30M , which will be presented to the public in 2025, represents the culmination of stylistic innovations to break down the barriers that limit contact with sea and sky. The interiors are designed by  m²atelier , for their first collaboration with Azimut , while the  exteriors by Alberto Mancini  take the two elements that established the success of Grande 26M and Grande 36M to their fullest expression by integrating them: the  Deck2Deck™ Terrace  and the  Infinity Skydeck .

The Grande 30M’s  Infinity Skydeck  is the natural evolution of the one the Shipyard made for the Grande 36M and for the first time goes from ‘semi’ to  fully walkaround .  The Upper Deck  of the yacht  runs flush from the stern to the extreme bow , allowing guests to experience this space like never before and pushing the concept of fluidity between exteriors and interiors to the extreme. The  Glass House  of the Upper Deck is transformed – thanks to the  fully disappearing full-height windows  – into a veranda open on three sides, establishing a union between the large aft lounge and the  Infinity Pool  which overlooks the sea off the bow.

The feature that best embodies the desire to expand the spaces on board and look to the horizon as a profound vocation of cruising is the  Deck2Deck™ Terrace , an extension of the transom obtained by raising the teak hatch of the garage to become a continuation of the cockpit and a real  terrace over the sea .

The signature of  m²atelier , an international architecture and design studio founded in Milan by  Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic , is evident in the  architectural language that draws from different fields, from residential to contemporary art , to create fluid and informal spaces, to be lived and used in great relaxation and freedom, where time passes slowly and where the perception of light is the heart of the experience.

Light is the protagonist throughout the spaces on board  the Grande 30M:  from the large, floor-to-ceiling windows to the internal staircase , made ethereally light to give this structural element an artistic interpretation and create a cascade of light that descends from the Upper Deck to the Main Deck. This architectural concept embraces attention to detail and the ability to combine different materials in a relentless pursuit of a  sustainable minimalism  that is attentive to people’s wellbeing and respect for the environment.

Grande 30M is one of Azimut’s Low Emission Yachts , which include more than half of the brand’s models. Low Emission Yachts  guarantee a reduction in consumption – and therefore in CO2 emissions – of 20 to 30%  compared to models of similar size with hard-chine hulls and traditional shaft line. These results are possible through the combination of three key factors: weight reduction through the extensive use of carbon fiber; the development of increasingly efficient hulls, designed ad hoc to suit the mission of each Series; the use of innovative propulsion, such as the  POD system installed on board the Grande 30M .

Federico Lantero  also unveiled to the Cannes audience the  Seadeck 9  project, the future flagship of the Seadeck Series, which is the first Series of hybrid family motor yachts, representing the most efficient models ever built by Azimut – soon to be the ambassador of the Shipyard’s Low Emission Yacht fleet.

The Series, which will make its debut in 2024 with the Seadeck 6, inaugurates a new  gentle era , marking a milestone in Azimut’s path towards a  more conscious approach to the topic of environmental sustainability . Seadeck signals a return to nature through technological solutions that potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% in an average year of use, both while sailing and at anchor, perfectly paired with the  Fun Island , a reinvented aft deck that “embraces” the sea and a new lifestyle based on  wellbeing .

The Seadeck 9 – with exteriors by  Alberto Mancini  and interiors by  Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez  – represents the epitome of the Series’ concept and elaborates its innovations. The Fun Island is transformed into a  cascade of terraces with a surface area of 60m² on 3 levels , a  pool  integrated into the deck and flanked by two sunbeds which can slide to cover it, and an  additional large platform at water level . The combined space is an unparalleled design masterpiece, whose elements transcend their individual functions to evoke, as a whole, the aspiration for a world of sharing, nature and freedom.
