Howth Yacht Club

Howth Yacht Club

Located on the east coast of Ireland behind the north arm of Dublin Bay, Howth Yacht Club was originally founded as Howth Sailing Club in 1895. The club later combined with Howth Motor Yacht Club to form Howth Yacht Club. The current modern clubhouse, completed in 1987, overlooks the scenic cliffs of Howth Head and the island bird sanctuary of Ireland Eye. With over 2,000 members, Howth Yacht Club is one of the largest sailing clubs in Ireland or the UK, boasting a prestigious membership that includes the President and Taoiseach of Ireland, internationally recognised sailors, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

The clubhouse facilities include changing rooms, a bar, lounge, rooms, and a dining room, providing a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for members and visitors. Howth Yacht Club organises and runs a variety of sailing events and courses throughout the year, with active keelboat and dinghy racing fleets. The club is also renowned for being a world-class international sailing venue, hosting high-level competitions such as World, European, National, and Regional championships as part of its busy annual sailing schedule.

One of the unique features of Howth Yacht Club is its association with the world's oldest one-design racing keelboat class, the 'Howth Seventeen Footer'. Designed by Walter Herbert Boyd in 1897, these gaff-rigged topsail boats have been raced in the local waters since their introduction in 1898. The club's 250-berth marina in front of the clubhouse, along with 60 swinging moorings in the harbour area, cater to keelboats without engines, providing a picturesque and convenient setting for maritime enthusiasts.

With a rich history, vibrant sailing community, and a commitment to excellence in all its activities, Howth Yacht Club is a prestigious and sought-after destination for sailing enthusiasts in Dublin and beyond.

Howth Yacht Club

Howth Yacht Club originated as Howth Sailing Club in 1895. In 1968 Howth Sailing Club combined with Howth Motor Yacht Club, which had operated from the West Pier since 1935, to form Howth Yacht Club. The new clubhouse was opened in 1987 with further extensions carried out and more planned for the future. We cater for sailors of all ages and run sailing courses throughout the year as part of being an Irish Sailing Association accredited training facility. The club has a fully serviced marina with berthing for 250 yachts and we are delighted to be able to welcome visitors to this famous and scenic area of Dublin. New applications for membership are always welcome and can be accessed through our official website.

Bar & Dining

  • About Bar & Dining

howth yacht club committee

The club's bar flows into three separate areas for members and guests to enjoy.

The main bar is located on the first floor and is spacious, bright and modern with extensive views over the marina, harbour area and the islands of Lambay and Ireland's Eye. The lounge bar links directly with the dining room and provides a comfortable seating area around the large modern fireplace and is often used as a bright and warm reception area prior to dining or events. The 'snug' is where the long winter nights are sipped away in cosy comfort around the small turf fire. The bar, lounge and dining room all share an extensive sweeping balcony that opens out into a large sunny terrace.

The bar is well stocked with beers, wines and spirits as well as the large range of soft drinks, coffees, teas, draught beers, sandwiches and snacks that every sailor would expect of one the largest yacht clubs in this part of the world.

Dining Room

The magnificent dining room can be tastefully partitioned to cater for events and dining from a small dinner party and private dining rooms to a gala dinner for almost 200 people. It has its own wine bar with a very large range of amply-stocked favourite wines and champagnes including some house specialities.

The dining menus are naturally filled with locally-sourced fresh produce, including local fresh fish and beef appropriate to the season.
