Vad innebär det att jobba på yacht och vad är yachting?

Superyachter ägs av förmögna privatpersoner som använder sin båt ungefär som en sommarstuga. Trots att antalet gäster ombord en superyacht (standard mellan 12-14 st) förblir detsamma oavsett yachtens storlek, så kan antalet i besättningen variera mycket. Man kan se yachterna som flytande hotell. När du jobbar på yacht ligger fokus på att ge gästerna den bästa möjliga service och upplevelse. Ombord behövs det olika kompetenser, men de vanligaste ingångspositionerna för att jobba på yacht är junior stewardess eller junior deckhand. Ska du jobba som deckhand är erfarenheter inom det marina meriterande, som stewardess är allt inom service meriterande.

Yachterna reser sedan efter säsong, och spenderar mycket tid på exotiska platser så som Karibien och Maldiverna på vinterhalvåret, och St Tropez och Sardinien på sommarhalvåret. Detta ger dig som jobbar på yacht möjlighet att få följa med till och uppleva fantastiska och exotiska platser!

Det är ett flexibelt arbeta att jobba på yacht eftersom du kan jobba permanent (tills du säger upp dig), en säsong, eller kortare kontrakt under en kortare period. Du kan göra karriär och jobba dig upp till Officer och Befälhavare på exterior-sidan, eller Chief Stewardess eller Purser på interior-sidan.

Vad tjänar du när du jobbar på yacht

Ingångslön ligger på ca 25000 – 30000 kronor, och på så kallade charteryachter har du dessutom möjlighet att få generösa summor med dricks. Det kan bli så mycket som 60.000 kr för en veckas jobb!

Utan rätt information och rätt verktyg kan yachting kännas som en krånglig bransch att få in en fot i. Det finns ingen, eller mycket lite, information på svenska, och det är lätt hänt att ta onödiga omvägar som enkelt kan undvikas om man har rätt kunskap från början.

Yachting Sweden har därför satt ihop en introduktionskurs där dem i detalj går igenom den information du behöver för att så snabbt och smidigt som möjligt få ditt första jobb ombord. Introduktionskursen täcker också bitar som dina rättigheter ombord, vad du kan förvänta dig av ett kontrakt, skatter och löner, visum, försäkringar och annat du kan behöva tänka på när du jobbar i branschen. Kursen kan du gå fysiskt på plats i Stockholm, eller online.

2 essential courses to get started on yachts as a steward/stewardess: STCW Basic Safety Training and Yacht Steward/ Stewardess Training. STCW BST is a mandatory training for all seafarers, and G.U.E.S.T Interior program will equip you with the skills and knowledge to be able to offer excellent service on yachts.

STCW Basic Safety Training

STCW Basic Safety Training is a 5-day course comprised of five modules:

• Personal Safety & Social Responsibility: understanding of on-board working conditions, safety procedures and accident prevention.
• Personal Survival Techniques: survival at sea in the event of an emergency, life-raft familiarisation.
• Elementary First Aid: basic first aid training & resuscitation.
• Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting: fire causes, prevention, extinguishing techniques.
• Proficiency in Security Awareness: importance of on-board security and how to recognise and react in the event of security threats.

The course provides students with an important introduction to working at sea and will equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to work safely onboard a seagoing vessel. Once students obtain STCW Basic Safety Training, they meet the minimum mandatory requirement for working on superyachts and commercial vessels over 24 metres in length.

The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping) courses are run in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code including the Manila amendments introduced in 2010.

Our Yacht Steward/ Stewardess Training is accredited by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) and is the only internationally accredited maritime hospitality program available to crew working in the luxury superyacht sector. Covered modules include:

How to Become a Yacht Stewardess / Steward: An Experienced Insiders Guide

If you’re wondering how to become a yacht stewardess / steward, you’ve found the perfect starting point.

I’ve personally reaped the rewards of 10 magnificent years in the industry, where I started out as a yacht stewardess and worked my way up to Chief Stewardess. This has motivated me to help people like you that are wondering how to become a yachtie .

My goal here is to equip you with the best resources and knowledge for how to become a stewardess on a yacht. Make sure you follow these steps to ensure you successfully land your first job.

Yacht Steward / Yacht Stewardess Job Description

As a Yacht Stewardess or Steward, you are responsible for all the interior operations of the vessel. This will include tasks such as housekeeping, laundry and high-end food and beverage service.

Interior Tasks Include:

• 5 star food and beverage service
• Flower arranging
• Table scaping
• Laundry Care
• Interior housekeeping
• Updating interior inventories
• Accounting and budgeting
• Liaising with guests and co-ordinating activities

1. What Qualifications Do You Need to be a Yacht Stewardess or Steward?

In order to become a stewardess on a yacht, you will need to have an STCW Certification and pass an ENG1 medical.

The STCW (Standards of Training and Certification of Watch keeping) is an internationally mandated course and a minimum requirement for anyone who wishes to work on a yacht.

Throughout the training, crew members will acquire the necessary skills to handle emergency situations and ensure the safety of all onboard. They will also learn safe working practices to ensure the safety of themselves and their fellow crew members.

In 2010 the STCW convention added a new module requirement to the basic safety training, so ensure that you do the additional Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) module which takes one extra day.

This STCW course is comprised of 4 modules, takes 5 days to complete, and is valid for 5 years. The modules include:

• Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
• Fire Fighting and prevention (FFP)
• Elementary First Aid (EFA)
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)

If you aim to work on vessels of +50m in size you may also need to hold the PDSD (Proficiency in Designated Security duties) course. This is a one-day online course for anyone who may be involved in security duties such as being a watch keeper.

To work on a yacht, you must undergo a basic medical examination called an ENG1. This assessment is performed by a doctor certified by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) to ensure that you are healthy enough to work on a yacht.

2. Recommended Courses if You want to Become a Yacht Stewardess / Steward

In order to become a Yacht Stewardess or Steward you do not necessarily need to hold any other courses or certifications. The courses you choose to do would be more so to boost your confidence and gain better insight into being a stewardess on a yacht.

Hood Hygiene and Safety Level 2

Although this course is not mandatory, I highly recommend you do it as most vessels require anyone handling food (Stews included) to hold this certification. There are a few variations of the course so just ensure that the one you do is MCA approved.

The purpose of this certification is to equip crew members with the skills to assume personal accountability for food safety. This involves understanding the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in both personal work areas and food preparation.

Introductory Yacht Steward/ Yacht Stewardess Training

These courses are generally held over 5 days, and include everything you need to know about how to get into yachting as a Stewardess or Steward, as well as what your job will entail.

You will learn all the basic elements of housekeeping, laundry, service, floristry, wine knowledge, and onboard living etiquette.

These courses are not essential, but extremely helpful in having you better understand what will be required of you if you want to become a Yacht Stew.

3. Create the Perfect Yacht CV

If you are wondering how become a Yacht Stewardess with no experience, you are going to need to make sure your Yacht CV stands out from the rest.

Besides a well-laid out resume, you also need to highlight why you are the best candidate for this specific job that you are applying for. Be sure to highlight ANY transferable skills you may have to offer the industry. This could be hospitality experience, floristry, baby-sitting, yoga, or maybe you are a masseuse.

4. Apply for your Visa if Necessary

To work as a stewardess on a Super Yacht, you will need to look into your personal situation and passport to identify which visa you need.

B1/B2 VISA – Needed to enter the United States and surrounding waters

Shengen Visa – Needed to enter Europe for the Mediterranean season

5. Locate Yourself in the Right Place at the Right Time

Once you are ready to head over to a yachting hub, you need to consider the time of year you are going. Ideally, you want to arrive a few weeks before the season starts. There are 2 seasons in yachting:

The United States and Caribbean Winter Season (November/December to March/April)

The biggest hub for yachting in America is Fort Lauderdale, and in the Caribbean, it is Antigua and St Maarten.

Please note that if you are not a green card holder or US citizen, I do not recommend flying into America and actively seeking work. This is illegal and could get you into trouble.

The Mediterranean Summer Season (April/May to September/October)

If you’re looking for the ideal spot in the Mediterranean, consider Antibes in the South of France. It’s a top yachting hub with plenty of crew houses and yacht agents. Plus, you’re within easy reach of other sought-after destinations like Monaco and Nice.

Palma, located on the island of Mallorca, is also a major hub for yachting. It boasts numerous marinas, agents, and crew housing facilities.

6. Day Working and Dock Walking for a Yacht Stewardess / Steward

“Daywork” is when you get hired on a day-to-day basis, earning cash and assisting boats as they need extra help onboard.

Daywork is a great way to get experience as a Yacht Stewardess or Steward. If you make a good impression on the Captain and Crew, this could lead to a permanent position onboard or a referral to another boat.

“ Dock Walking ” is when you walk the docks of marina’s handing out your CV in the hopes of being hired for day work.

7. Sign up with Yacht Crew Agencies

You will want to sign up with as many yacht crew agencies as possible. Here are some popular agencies you should sign up with to get started: Luxury Yacht Group, Blue Water Yachting, The Crew Network, Cotton Crews, Yot Spot, Northrop and Johnson, HR Crew and Burgess.

To stay updated on job postings, it’s important to check social media platforms like Facebook. Join various yachting Facebook groups such as Fort Lauderdale Yacht Crew, Palma Yacht Crew, and Antibes Yacht Crew. You want to keep checking these groups regularly to stay informed.

Yacht Steward / Yacht Stewardess Salary

As with everything in the industry, your salary is largely dependent on the size of the vessel, your experience in the industry, as well as your qualifications.

A starting salary for a Yacht Stewardess or Steward can range from $2500-$3500. From there you can expect to see annual salary increments as you spend more time in the industry.

If you want to set some goals, a Chief Stewardess’s salary can be upwards of $5000 – $9000. Possibly even more depending on the size of the vessel!

On top of these very attractive salaries , you may also have opportunities to earn more money in the form of charter tips and annual bonuses.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Yacht Stewardess or Steward

The housekeeping stew.

The role of a Housekeeping Stew is to clean and maintain all aspects of the interior of the vessel . Guest cabins and common areas need to be meticulously cleaned with a lot of care and attention to detail. They will also be cleaning crew areas such as the crew mess and bridge.

Cleaning the vessel is not as simple as it seems. You will be vacuuming, dusting, polishing, tooth-picking grooves, ear budding ledges, and working with delicate surfaces.

The Laundry Stew

The Laundry Stew is responsible for laundering, stain treating, ironing, and maintaining laundry for the entire vessel. This includes crew uniform, crew personal clothing, guest clothing, beach towels, bath towels, table linens, rags, and kitchen tea towels.

The job of a Laundry Stewardess is in fact a very meticulous one, as you will be dealing with a number of different fabrics and colors. A simple mistake could cost the boss a very expensive dress.

The Service Stew

The role of the Service Stewardess is to ensure that every want and need of the guests is met. As far as service goes, you will be serving 3 meals a day, afternoon canapes, sunset cocktails, and all the other beverages and snacks in between.

You may also be required to head over to the beach to do service if there is a beach set up, or go for a cruise on the tender to serve drinks and snacks. A fun part of the role is also of course the tablescaping, which is usually most Stewardesses’ favorite aspect of the job.

At-home Tasks for Your Personal Growth

There are a number of things you can do to boost your confidence as a Yacht Stewardess or Steward before joining the industry. I can assure you that personal skills and experience come preferred over certifications.

Take your time to do research, link up to the social media accounts of established stewardesses and get involved with any work or transferable skills that will boost your resume.

All of these tasks, to list a few, can be practiced at home and will impress your future employer.

Some of you may find it easy to become a Yacht Stewardess or steward, and some of you may bump into some hurdles along the way.

Hello Chelsea. When you are starting out in the Super Yachting Industry (not cruise ships) your role is more likely to include housekeeping and laundry. With more years of experience, your role will become more diverse and include bar tending and service. Superyacht Stewardess & Steward Training Course requirements

Interior crew are typically required to work long hours and must be physically fit and able. You must be energetic and enthusiastic with an ability to work to a high standard in all tasks. Some previous experience in hospitality is a great bonus, but not at all necessary to join the training. Also if you have aligned experience in beauty, food and beverages, catering, wine and art appreciation, massage, sports and training, these extra skills will also be useful in your career progression.

You must have an ENG1 seafarer medical fitness certificate to work at sea ( Find out more about the ENG1 Medical Certificate ).  Whilst it’s not essential to hold your ENG1 to complete your training with UKSA, it is required to hold this to secure work in the industry. For this reason, we recommend all students gain their ENG1 before they attend training.

Step 1 – Get Qualified as a Stewardess

Despite what you will hear…. To start working on a Superyacht there are only 3 Basic Documents required to make you qualified, and in order to start as a Stewardess you need:

• Passport (Valid 12 months)
• Basic Safety STCW Training
• Medical Certificate (Valid 6 months at least)

Step 2 – Get the right skills and stewardess training

To get an edge over other crew, some yachts require additional certificates to be held by a minimum amount of crew on board. This is called safe manning certification . If you are a Stewardess starting you should consider these:

• Food and Hygiene Level 2
• Crowd and Crisis Management

Step 3 – Get the perfect Yachting CV

You will need to write a perfect Superyacht Stewardess CV. The sections of your CV should include:

Step 5 – Daywork and experience

The best way to find daywork is to speak with your Yachtiecareers Instructor and network in the location you are currently in. You need to be flexible and ready to work and step in at short notice.

When I was starting Yachting , I spent one day day working in Portofino in Italy , the next one in Monaco and 2 days later I was in Cannes in France.

Towards the end of the week I was doing a crossing on a 50m yacht from Antibes, France to Venice, Italy. 

You need to be flexible and ready to work and step in at short notice, in order to get the right opportunities.

• Network in your Location
• Use Yachtiecareers Partner Daywork App to find daywork with one click
• Let your Instructor find daywork for you
• Have your phone ready at all times
• Have your CV and business cards ready 
• Use your crew house contacts
• Join relevant Facebook groups (this is not always a good idea)

Step 7 – Get a Strong Superyacht Reference

Just like any other profession, network is everything. When you complete our training we are confident in your abilities and are happy to provide you with a reference.

If I am looking for a Stewardess on board and I get a recommendation from a friend or someone I know, because I will choose your CV over 10 other CVs with stronger experience. That is just reality.

So build references and network using YachtieCareers, your Instructors, people you meet in Yachting hubs and ask during your Daywork.

Step 8 – Start applying for our Superyacht jobs

The way to find Superyacht jobs as a Stewardess with no experience can be hard. By all means you can register, on regular crew agencies, crew databases and apply for jobs daily.

However you will be competing with thousands of other crew, the chances that I will even read your CV are very slim.  And if I do get your CV it will be in a pile with 20 other CVs. At this point it is very important your CV has the perfect lay-out and structure.

At Yachtiecareers  we have created a Superyacht recruitment platform where we focus only on junior crew.   In addition to that the yachts we work with only contact us with junior crew requests and with the help of your personal Instructor you can get connected to people in the industry making it easier to land that first job. 

Other ways is to network and daywork. Do nor apply for hundreds (100) of online jobs without having the perfect CV and experience, it will just be a waste of time, moreover you should spend your time more wisely.

Step 9 – Ace your job interviews with your coach

At this point, you are very close to securing your first job, since you have completed the right training and used our step by step guide to secure your first job interview, because the CV they have received has displayed your key strengths.

Before the interview, your Chief Stewardess Instructor will prepare you for the questions you might face before starting, remember that 90% of the questions will be about your CV, so know your own CV inside out before the interview to explain your past experiences.

As long as you appear willing to start the job, humble and showing a happy attitude it will get you on board if you follow the interview guide from your Instructor, as result you will secure your first Superyacht job.

Step 10 – Get a stewardess job, bank account and sign your contract

Great, because you followed our guide it has led to you securing your first Superyacht  Stewardess job.

Now the fun starts. It is time to pack, to sign your contract and to get a Bank account. 

We will go through your contract with you, moreover we will make sure it is either MLC compliant or giving you the basic rights as yacht crew. If you have got the interview by using the Yachtiecareers network, the Yacht will be compliant.

• We help you with your Bank Account, to get the right currency and setting it up online
• Make sure to bring your Medical Certificate, Passport and STCW certificates originals.
• Get your flight tickets
• Sign the contract

This pack is designed for future yacht stewards and stewardesses who want to stand out and have additional skills for a successful career onboard: STCW Basic Safety Training, G.U.E.S.T Introduction to Interior training, and Powerboat Level 2. STCW BST is a mandatory training for all seafarers, G.U.E.S.T Interior program will equip you with the skills and knowledge to be able to offer excellent service on yachts, and PB2 allows you to drive tender and advance your career on superyacht.

STCW Basic Safety Training is a 5-day course comprised of five modules:

• Personal Safety & Social Responsibility: understanding of on-board working conditions, safety procedures and accident prevention.
• Personal Survival Techniques: survival at sea in the event of an emergency, life-raft familiarisation.
• Elementary First Aid: basic first aid training & resuscitation.
• Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting: fire causes, prevention, extinguishing techniques.
• Proficiency in Security Awareness: importance of on-board security and how to recognise and react in the event of security threats.

The course provides students with an important introduction to working at sea and will equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to work safely onboard a seagoing vessel. Once students obtain STCW Basic Safety Training, they meet the minimum mandatory requirement for working on superyachts and commercial vessels over 24 metres in length.

The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping) courses are run in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code including the Manila amendments introduced in 2010.

Yacht Steward/ Stewardess Training is accredited by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) and is the only internationally accredited maritime hospitality program available to crew working in the luxury superyacht sector. Covered modules include:

• Yachting and yachting life: demographics of the industry, professional search for a position, life at sea, health and wellbeing, personal presentation, communication etc.
• Laundry, fabrics and furnishings, safety: professional laundry practices and procedures, handling personal affairs, hanging, storing and placing garments etc.
• Food and beverage service: standards of presentation, serving food and beverages on yachts, mis en place in service areas, food safery, dierary requirements etc.
• Wine, bartending and mixology: wine basics, professional wine service, wine storage onboard a yacht, main spirits and classic service for spirits, tools and methods of cocktail mixing.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a 2-day comprehensive course covers all aspects of powerboats, boat handling, safety and pilotage. The RYA Level 2 certificates are recognized by the UK Coastguard and are used as a Tender License on board larger yachts.

Se världen kombinerat med jobb på lyxbåtar, det låter som en drömtillvaro. Nu finns en utbildning i Sverige som förbereder dig och ger dig de rätta kontakterna.

Malin Linder hade jobbat fem år på lyxyachter i Monaco och saknade en utbildning i Sverige för att lära sig hur den här, ganska speciella branschen fungerar.

– Jag hade många bekanta som kom till mig och frågade om jag kunde hjälpa dem att fixa jobb. Så jag startade igång.

Utbildningen till stewardess är en intensivkurs där man lär sig hur man bemöter gäster som har höga krav på servicen, hur arbetet fungerar på en båt, servering och tvätt men också etik och moral, alkohol och droger.

–  Det här är en livsstil, yachten är både boende och arbetsplats och man är aldrig helt ledig. För att trivas är det viktigt att man har service i sig, att man tycker om att bemöta människor och sen är det bra om man är nyfiken och äventyrlig, tycker Malin Linder som driver utbildningen på Swedish Yacht Crew School.

I kursen ingår också en Brand och Säkerhetsutbildning i Antibes eller Palma. Gör man den i Antibes är det många som passar på att söka jobb eftersom staden är ett Mecka för arbetsgivarna inom yachtvärlden.

–  Jag har mycket kontakter inom den här branschen så jag skickar ut elevernas CV till alla när kursen är slut. Sedan är det ett kursmoment att vi lär ut hur man söker genom agentur, berättar Malin.

Ett bra sätt att se världen

Emelie Glans har gått stewardessutbildningen i Stockholm och har nu fått jobb på en lyxjakt, där hon börjar om två veckor.

– Jag ville ut och se världen men är rädd för flyg så när jag hittade utbildningen där man kunde jobba på båtar så tänkte jag "fan, vad häftigt" och anmälde mig till kursen, berättar Emelie.

Hon valde att gå brand- och säkerhetskursen i Antibes och passade också på att gå runt på olika agenturer och presentera sig. Och det var på det sättet hon till slut fick jobbet.

Just nu befinner hon sig i Grekland, för ytterligare en kurs.

– Jag upptäckte att man behöver lite baskunskaper om hur man gör drinkar till gästerna, så just nu går jag en bartenderkurs i Grekland innan jag börjar jobba på yachten, säger Emelie.

Essential Superyacht Stew/Stewardess Qualifications:

Certain training courses are essential for you to qualify for employment onboard certain types of yacht and superyachts. Additional training, specific to the role of the steward(ess) is beneficial to those who are new to the industry, would like to refine and broaden their skill set, or to those who would like to progress in their career as a yacht steward(ess).

Below is a list of courses you should complete as essential yacht stew/stewardess training in order to meet the general employment requirements for both private and commercial superyachts.

STCW Basic Safety Training

In order for you to legally obtain a job on a  commercial  superyacht (over 24m) you have to be certified with all four basic safety training modules, which are as follows:

• Personal Survival Techniques | PST (A-VI/1-1)
• Fire Fighting Fire Prevention | FFP (A-VI/1-2)
• Elementary First Aid | EFA (A-VI/1-3)
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities | PSSR (A-VI/1-4)

Food Safety / Food Hygiene Level 2 Certificate:

All MLC complaint vessels require staff involved in food handling and catering activities on board to hold a recognised food safety certification. Due to the fact that there are a number of awarding bodies, accepted by different flag states, you are likely to encounter variations in this course. It is important to ensure that a) the course that you choose is MLC compliant and b) accepted by the flag state that you choose to work under. In order to meet the requirements of the majority of flag states, including the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency, it is recommended to pursue an MCA approved version of the course.

MCA Approved Food Safety / Hygiene in Catering Level II

Proficiency in Security Awareness / Duties Certificate

(STCW A-VI/6-1) & (STCW A-VI/6-1)

In order to work on an ISPS-compliant vessel, an STCW proficiency in security certificate is required. Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness (PSA)  is the minimum requirement, whereas  Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)  is required for crew who are designated security duties on such vessels.

Both courses can be done in class or online. *ISPS complaint yachts are commercial yachts larger than 500GT (Usually commercial yachts +50m in length)*

Additional / Beneficial Yacht Stew/Steward(ess) Qualifications:

These are additional courses and certifications specific to the duties associated with a yacht steward(ess).

Introductory Superyacht Stewardess Course:

This yacht stewardess crash course will better prepare you for the industry and teach you some basic skills and principals. Usually grouped with the above essential courses and offered as a combined training package. Stewardess courses are useful for people with no transferable skills that are unfamiliar with the industry. Although these courses are helpful and should improve your chances of gaining employment, they may not necessarily be accredited or internationally recognised. Although the Syllabus is dependant on the training provider, similar topics are usually covered. These yacht steward(ess) courses are available in both online and in-class formats.

GUEST Hospitality Steward / Stewardess Training Program:

The G.U.E.S.T Hospitality program is accredited by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) who are recognised by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). The program provides interior yacht crew with a clearly defined training routes upon which to grow a career upon. The hospitality program, tailored towards the role of the yacht steward(ess) is comprised of three levels of assessment ( Introduction , Advanced & Management Level) as well as specialist modules for specific duties.

The Hospitality Introduction Program is appropriate for entry level crew and consists of four modules that are as follows:

How to Get a Job as a Yacht Stewardess

Kate got her start in the yachting industry working as crew. She spent five years cruising the Bahamas, Caribbean, New England, and Central America, then segued that experience into a career in marine journalism, including stints as editor of  Dockwalk  and  ShowBoats International .

If you’re not afraid of hard work, have a knack for hospitality and service, and are a team player, then traveling the globe as superyacht stewardess could be in your future. Here is everything you need to know to land a job as a stewardess on a luxury yacht...

A yacht stewardess (or steward) is an entry-level position in yachting that provides a gateway to a career in hospitality at sea. A stewardess serves a vital role as part of the interior team and is responsible for the upkeep and presentation of the interior of a vessel.

One of the greatest appeals of working as interior crew on a superyacht (other than travel and tips ) is that the role of a stewardess doesn’t require extensive schooling or qualifications. While experience in the hospitality or customer service sector is advantageous, when starting out as a junior steward or stewardess, it is more about having a friendly disposition and being willing to learn and work hard.

“The ideal junior stewardess will have an eagerness to absorb information and learn the ropes properly, the ability to take direction and follow instructions, as well as the confidence to ask questions when clarification or additional instruction is needed,” says Sarah Bester with Northrop & Johnson Crew Services .

What is a Yacht Stewardess?

A steward or stewardess maintains the interior of a superyacht and provides five-star service to its owners and guests. On charter or owner trips, the interior team handles beverage and meal service, housekeeping, and laundry, all with the highest attention to detail. They have the most face time with guests so are responsible for relaying their wishes to the deck department, chef, and captain.

What Does a Yacht Stewardess do?

A junior member of an interior team on a yacht larger than 45 to 50 meters will typically start his or her career in the laundry room and/or in housekeeping rather than in service.

On smaller boats, the stewardess can be a department of one. “If you’re a solo stew you’ll be up early doing it all,” says Alene Keenan, a 30-year veteran of interior work who has literally written the book on yacht service, The Yacht Guru’s Bible. The day starts with opening duties: “setting up for breakfast, preparing breakfast, serving and clearing breakfast, laundry, cabin service, housekeeping duties, more laundry,” lists Keenan. This is followed by lunch service and more housekeeping and laundry, ongoing beverage service, setting up for afternoon activities, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres service, dinner service, cabin turndowns, finishing and returning laundry, and to close the day, pulling dishes, décor, and service items for the next day’s breakfast.

“If you have two or more interior crew, the duties are shared and probably rotated, and start times depend on hours of work and rest,” Keenan says.

• Top Tips For Working as a Stewardess

On larger yachts, the chief stew will provide his or her team with a checklist of duties to perform for each shift. “The routine will generally be the same,” says Chief Stewardess Tracey Bamforth . “You will be allocated a shift, shift duties, and shift expectations. You will wake up and dress in your on-charter uniform, making sure you are presentable, fresh, and on time. It’s important to remember that when the guests are on, your need to manage yourself to the best of your ability: speaking softly, working smartly, being very aware of your environment — for example, not leaving cleaning products out and about and keeping the yacht to its absolute best standard.”

Off-charter is when maintenance, deep cleaning, and inventorying are done in addition to daily laundry, crew mess, and bridge duties.

Who Does a Yacht Stewardess Report to?

This varies depending on the size of the yacht and crew. “Every yacht is unique and could have a different set-up; nothing is black or white,” says Lien Eggermont, senior yacht placement consultant for interior crew at Viking Crew .

Generally, when a stewardess works alone, they report to the captain. When there are two or more in the interior department, the junior would report to the chief stewardess, or with larger teams, they may even report to the second steward/ess. For the largest of superyachts, each interior division — housekeeping, laundry and service — will have their own head of department (HOD), so for example a housekeeping stewardess would report to the head of housekeeping.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Become a Yacht Stewardess?

All crew need STCW basic safety training , a five-day course, and an ENG1 medical certificate , and some yachts may also require certification in Food Safety & Hygiene, a one-day course.

On top of these necessities, there are numerous options for yacht-specific interior training, but many chief stews, like Robert, prefer to teach on the job. “Most of the skills you need in yachting, especially in the interior, you learn as you go,” she says.

The amount of knowledge you need going in may depend on when you’re hired. “Early in the season, the HOD will have time to train and teach everything from scratch. Mid-season they don’t have time to hold somebody’s hand — in the nicest possible way — and will need somebody who can hit the ground running,” Eggermont says.

Courses that introduce entry-level candidates to yacht interior work are offered in many countries around the world. “Bluewater hosts some fantastic courses; their Yacht Interior Service courses start at a zero-to-hero course and can really help with a newbie or green stewardess who wants to acclimate and understand the principles and products used on a vessel,” Bamforth says.

Bester points out that additional courses like silver service and WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) can help a candidate stand out. “These courses are an additional investment and thus an indication that the candidate may be more career minded,” she says.

• Recommendations for Entry-Level Interior Crew

“Training has always been a privilege in my mind,” adds Bamforth. “Most newbies starting out will already be stretched from arriving from a new country, trying to find a new role, living in a crew house, and then to expect them to start off with a couple thousand dollars in courses under their belts is somewhat unfair. I believe in the ability to train and trial a newbie and give them the opportunity to show you they have the capacity to work, learn, live in a very close environment with others, repeat the systems they are learning, and, most importantly, have a good attitude!”

Maxine Robert, chief stewardess on 47-meter M/Y Loon , adds, “Having a positive attitude is everything as we live in such close quarters and work very closely with each other every day.”

What Experience Do I Need?

“Many programs will consider junior stew candidates who are green to yachting but come with strong land-based hospitality experience,” says Bester. Eggermont seconds this: “Waitressing in high-end restaurants or hotels, background in events, housekeeper in a hotel or, for example, a boutique B&B. But also candidates who have worked on board cruise ships or river cruises will be considered.”

Keenan points out a wide range of work experiences on land that translate to interior work at sea, listing: “restaurant/hotel work, flower arranging , event planning, retail sales, anything with customer service.”

Furthermore, Bamforth says she considers a potential new hire’s complete background, including things like whether they have finished university — “my thoughts would be that they have a ‘stick it out to the end’ attitude, and an ability to think on their own, which is always a plus,” — or if they played team sports at school — “shows an aptitude for playing nicely with people.” She says she has enjoyed working with hires from a wide variety of backgrounds, from advertising to having a family member who is a florist. “Nurses or medical-trained candidates I find to be extremely empathic and good with other crewmembers,” she says.

How Much Does a Yacht Stewardess Earn?

The entry-level starting salary can range from $2,500 to $3,500 per month, says Bester at Northrop & Johnson. “Charter programs will typically be on the lower end of the salary range due to the additional income crew receive through charter tips,” she says. Eggermont at Viking Crew says the average is €2,500 per month.

Dockwalk conducts an annual salary survey that polls both placement agencies and working yacht crew. According to its most recent 2020 Salary Survey , the low end of the range given by agencies — where most junior crew would start — is between $2,250 and $2,800 per month. Interior crew who aren’t working as the chief or solo self-reported that they made from $3,000 to $4,500 per month, with the bigger bucks being netted on bigger vessels.

The earning potential of interior crew grows alongside experience. At the top of their game, a chief steward/ess on a vessel longer than 70 meters earns $7,000 to $12,000 per month, says Dockwalk ’s wage guide.

“I’d say don’t be too picky as a junior crewmember,” Eggermont says. “If a 90-meter-plus (yacht) offers you a role at €2,000 with potentially an increase after probation or so, I’d say take it. Do a season, do your best so that you get a great reference. You need a foot in the door!”

Ombord lever du nämligen helt utan utgifter. Yachter står för alla dina måltider, husrum, resor, försäkring och ja, allt du kan tänkas behöva.

Men i dem juniora positionerna, de så kallade “ingångspositionerna” brukar en standard-lön ligga på 2500-3000 Euro månaden. Med några säsongers erfarenhet så kan du klättra upp till 3500-4000 euro / månaden. Detta i rollerna som Junior Stewardess, Junior Deckhand eller Crew Cook. Dem allra flesta yachter betalar ut lön i Euro, men Dollar förekommer också. 

För dig med en special skill

Om du kommer till yachting med en så kallad “special skill”. Det vill säga en nischad kompetens, det kan vara sjuksköterska, snickare, spa terapeut, personlig tränare, frisör, massör, florist eller liknande då kan du i de flesta fall förvänta dig en något högre ingångslön, runt 3000-4000 Euro / månaden. 

Jobba charter och få dricks på yachterna

Jobbar du på en charter-yacht, det vill säga en yacht som hyrs ut till andra gäster än ägarna så kan du också förvänta dig att få dricks, adderat på din ingångslön. Dricksen baseras på charter-hyran och gästerna förväntas dricksa 10-15 % av hyran. Det kan bli så mycket som 50.000-100.000 SEK för 1-2 veckor charter ombord PER besättningsmedlem. Dricksen delas jämt på hela besättningen. 

Mer seniora positioner

Detta är en bransch som du verkligen kan göra karriär inom, och jobbar du dig upp till en mer senior position ombord, så som Kapten, Officer, Chief Stewardess, Chief Engineer eller Head Chef så kan du tjäna riktigt bra. Det kan variera på storlek på yacht, hur många i besättningen du har ansvar för och hur din roll är utformad. Observera att alla dessa roller kräver ofta lång utbildning och lång erfarenhet.

En kapten på en yacht kan tjäna från 6000-12000 Euro / månaden

En officer på en yacht kan tjäna från 4000-8000 Euro / månaden

En Head Chef på en yacht kan tjäna från 5000-8000 Euro / månaden

En Chief Stewardess på en yacht  kan tjäna från 5000-8000 Euro / månaden

En Chief Engineer på en yacht kan tjäna från 5000 – 8000 Euro / månaden

Betalar man skatt när man jobbar på yacht?

När det kommer till skatter så finns det inte en regel som gäller för alla ombord, utan detta är baserat på vart just du är skriven någonstans och vilka regler som gäller där. Är du skriven i Sverige kan du räkna med att du är skatteskyldig i Sverige, hur mycket du betalar kan variera beroende på vilken yacht du är anställd på, hur länge du varit ombord och om den går oceanfart eller inte. Det finns alltså inget “generellt” svar, utan det beror på. Men räkna med att en del av din lön kommer att beskattas någonstans. Under introduktionskursen med Yachting Sweden går vi in på mer detaljer kring skatte-frågan, och pratar kring dem olika undantagen och alternativen som finns.

Men oavsett om du betalar full skatt eller reducerad så kommer du kunna tjäna väldigt bra i yachting-branschen, och du kommer kan lägga undan 100 % av din inkomst om du så skulle önska.

Våra kurser

Fartygsbefälsexamen klass viii.

För många växer tanken på att kunna jobba med sin hobby, båtlivet, i takt med att erfarenheten och upplevelserna till sjöss blir större. Fartygsbefäl klass VIII är för många början till en yrkeskarriär. Med en ”åtta” i bagaget kan du köra taxibåt och mindre arbetsbåtar (upp till ca 15m längd). Den ger dig också större trygghet i din roll som skeppare och passar även bra för den säkerhetsmedvetne fritidskepparen.

Fartygsbefälsexamen klass VIII Älva - Medelhavet

Spendera en vecka ombord på segelfartyget Älva, då vi kryssar i Medelhavet längs Spaniens kust och samtidigt ger utbildningen Fartygsbefälsexamen klass VIII. Utbildningen ger behörighet som befälhavare för mindre yrkesfartyg men passar även den säkerhetsmedvetna fritidsskepparen. Boende och utbildning sker ombord, där vi förenar teori med praktik medan vi tar oss längs Spaniens kust. Vi gör stopp i vissa hamnar där vi ligger för natten.

Handhavande av snabba fartyg

En praktisk utbildning i att köra snabba fartyg under avancerade förhållanden. Certifikatet ger dig möjlighet att framföra båtar kommersiellt i farter över 35 knop. Övernattning i ytterskärgården ingår i utbildningen.

Utbildningen vänder sig till dig som yrkesmässigt ska köra båt som kan gå i 35 knop eller mer. Uppmärksamhet och god färdplanering är två huvuddelar i kursen. Utbildningen är praktiskt inriktad och vi kör mycket båt. För att utnyttja tiden maximalt så övernattar vi ute i skärgården.

Säkerhetsutbildning för inre fart

En säkerhetsutbildning som vänder sig till personal ombord på fartyg i inre fart. Vår utbildning är godkänd för fartyg under 500 brutto, max 500 passagerare. Vi är avtalsleverantör till Skärgårdsredarna.

Refresh Basic Saftey STCW Manila

Refresh Basic Safety är en kurs i grundläggande säkerhet för sjöpersonal som har ett certifikat sedan tidigare och som har tre månaders sjötjänstgöring under de senaste fem åren. Kursen leder fram till utbildningsbevis enligt STCW Manila A-VI/1-1.4 samt Transportstyrelsens senaste förordning. Med detta utbildningsbevis kan du söka och få ut ett internationellt certifikat från Transportstyrelsen.

Kursen består av tre dagar varav två sker på Marina läroverket i Stocksund och en på brandfältet i Rosersberg. Utbildningen innehåller brandskydd, överlevnadsteknik, sjukvård, personlig säkerhet och ansvar.

ROC Radiokommunikation

Utbildning i radiokommunikation för dig som jobbar på sjön. Vänder sig till fartygsbefäl som ska tjänstgöra ombord på fartyg som trafikerar inom GMDSS-Område A1.

A1-område definieras som ett område som sträcker sig 40 sjömil från land, i vilket fartyget kan nå kustradiostation med VHF som är utrustad med Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

Fortbildningskurs i krishantering (CCM)

Fortbildningskursen i krishantering vänder sig till dig som tidigare har gått grundutbildningen och tappat behörigheten eller aldrig tagit ut den. Denna så kallade refresher genomförs under en heldag. Kursen är godkänd av Transportstyrelsen och kräver minst tre kursdeltagare.

Basic safety training grundkurs

Utbildning i grundläggande säkerhet för sjöpersonal enligt STCW Manila, IMO 60. Utbildningen leder till internationellt utbildningsbevis.

Under fem dagar får du en gedigen utbildning i hur du hanterar olika typer av risker ombord på fartyg och vi övar mycket praktiskt. Överlevnad, brandskydd, sjukvård och arbetsmiljö är några exempel på övningsområden.

Utbildningen kräver inga förkunskaper men du bör vara medveten om att den i vissa delar är fysiskt krävande och omfattar övningar i både vatten och trånga utrymmen.

Viss del av utbildningen är förlagd till Roserbergs brandfält. Fika och lunch ingår dagarna på brandfältet.

Maskinbefälsexamen klass VIII

Utbildning för dig som är skeppare på maskinstarka yrkesfartyg eller vill skaffa dig behörighet som maskinist på mindre handelsfartyg. Kursen är i huvudsak teoretisk men innehåller även praktiska moment. Det krävs inga förkunskaper men du bör vara lite tekniskt intresserad.

Pris : 6 500 kr/person ex. moms

HSF (endast för YH-studenter)

Två dagars kurs med övernattning i skärgården, max 4 deltagare per tillfälle. Handhavande av snabba fartyg, endast för aktiva YH studenter.

Att kombinera jobb med resande blir allt vanligare runtom i världen och i takt med att världen blir mer och mer global, så ökar också möjligheterna för vad man kan göra.

Ett spännande yrke som låter dig resa och uppleva världen samtidigt som du tjänar pengar är att jobba på en yacht. Det är inget som jag själv hunnit med att göra, men det hade varit spännande att prova på.

Som en del av min serie om jobb där man kan kombinera resande , så har jag intervjuat Yachting Sweden för att få en inblick i hur det är att jobba på en yacht och dela med mig av detta till er som inspiration och vägledning. 

Hur är det att jobba på en yacht?

Att jobba på en yacht är en fantastisk upplevelse, som många gånger känns surrealistisk. Man jobbar väldigt hårt, men befinner sig alltid i fantastiska miljöer, på paradisplatser som man annars aldrig skulle ha råd att åka till.

Man är omkring väldigt förmögna personer, och får vara med behind the scenes bland ”the rich and famous”. Man jobbar även med likasinnade människor från olika delar av världen, ens ”crew” blir familj som man utvecklar en helt unik relation till.

Man jobbar ihop, bor ihop och spenderar sin fritid ihop. Som sagt jobbar man väldigt hårt, ibland många veckor i sträck- men det är värt då man alltid blir belönad med fantastiska upplevelser världen över, och får riktigt bra betalt under tiden.

Hur kan en vanlig arbetsdag se ut?

Beroende på vilken position man har så ser ens dagar olika ut. Men en yacht är som ett flytande hotell för endast 12 övernattande gäster, på en stor yacht (100m +) är man över 30 stycken i besättningen som ser till att gästerna har allt de behöver, och att yachten opererar som den ska.

Gästerna blir omhändertagna dygnet runt. De har stewardessar som bäddar deras sängar, stryker deras kläder, städar deras kabiner, serverar deras måltider och blandar deras drinkar.

Deckhandsen finns där och skjutsar gästerna i tenderbåtar in och ut ur land, assisterar gästerna med vattenleksaker så som vattenskotrar, seabobs, paddleboards, flyboards etc, de ser till att yachten alltid är skinande ren.

En stor båt har ofta mycket ”vattenleksaker” och en drös med mindre båtar som kommer med den stora båten, som används till olika saker. Det finns kockar som lagar all deras mat, exakt när de önskar den. Och sedan finns det mekaniker som ser till att maskiner, allt elektroniskt, avlopp etc och alla system med vatten, pumpar osv sköts.

Kapten och officierarna har hand om säkerheten ombord, och navigationen när yachten transporteras. Beroende på ens position så har man hand om ett visst område ombord. Ingångspositionerna brukar vara stewardess eller deckhand.

En typisk dag med gäster är att det serveras 3 måltider, och att gästerna gör olika aktiviteter med yachten varje dag. Och hela tiden finns crew runt omkring dom som ser till att de aldrig saknar något.

Hur kan man få jobb på en yacht?

För att få jobb på en yacht kan man gå via bemanningsföretag, sociala medier, eller vara på plats där yachterna befinner sig för att få kontakt med crew.

För ens första jobb är det viktigt att nätverka, och det är bra om man redan känner någon/några som kanske kan rekommendera en.

Finns det olika typer av yachter man kan jobba på?

Man kan jobba på segelyachter eller motoryachter. Sedan kan man jobba på charteryachter eller privata yachter. En charteryacht är en yacht där ägaren väljer att hyra ut yachten till andra familjer och sällskap.

Sedan finns det olika storlekar, allt från 30 meter till 180 meter stora yachter. De kan drivas på lite olika sätt och upplevelsen som crew kommer definitivt skilja sig.

Vad behöver man för utbildning/kunskap?

För ingångspositionerna behöver man en 5 dagars långsäkerhetsutbildning för att lagligt få jobba ombord. Sedan finns det andra kurser som är meriterande eller obligatoriska för många yachter.

Den grundläggande utbildningen för att lagligt få jobba ombord är en 5 dagars kurs, där man gör brandövningar, första hjälpen, överlevnad i vatten med mera.

Hur mycket pengar kan man tjäna?

Man kan tjäna otroligt bra, en ingångslön ligger på cirka 25.000:-. Sedan kan man snabbt klättra upp till mer. Sedan har man boende, alla måltider, försäkring, resor och annat betalt för sig.

Om man jobbar på en charteryacht kan man få dricks för 1-2 veckors charter upp till 30.000-40.000:- per man, detta då adderat på sin lön.

Vad är det för arbetstider?

När man inte har gäster jobbar man vanligtvis 8-16, med helger ledigt. Med gäster jobbar man ofta långa dagar, med en längre rast under dagen.

Med gäster finns det dock sällan ledig tid. Utan när man får sin 2 timmars rast under dagen ser man till att vila.

Vilka fördelar får man när man jobbar på en yacht?

Fördelarna är att man får allt betalt för sig. Man har kockar som lagar ens mat, man har hygienartiklar, man är försäkrad, man får betalt för att resa till paradisplatser och får möjlighet att upptäcka dessa.

Inte lika mycket som om man var gäst ombord, men att vara crew är fortfarande en otrolig upplevelse och man får se och vara med om fantastiska platser och upplevelser, tillsammans med andra som också älskar resor, äventyr och upplevelser.

Yachterna reser ofta långt och mycket, och många yachter har en ”world wide itinerary”.

Finns det några nackdelar?

Nackdelarna är att jobbet inte alltid är jätteflexibelt, det är under vissa perioder svårt att styra över ledighet eller arbetstimmar och raster. Det kan också vara en utmaning att jobba och bo med samma människor, ibland kan det kännas svårt att få tid för sig själv.

Arbetet kan dessutom vara väldigt fysiskt. Konflikter uppstår lätt ombord och det finns ett starkt hierarkisystem som ibland kan bli påfrestande.

Vilka är de populäraste resmålen?

Medelhavet och Karibien är populära resmål. Men även södra Stilla havet. Yachterna finns dock överallt, och efter man gjort någon säsong kan man i princip välja vart man önskar att jobba.

Har ni någon egen favorit?

Helenas favorit är Virgin Islands i USA och Newport, Rhode island. Lisa tycker Capri i Italien är fantastiskt, och likaså Corfu i Grekland.
