Superyacht RoMa: understated elegance on a large scale

The 62 metre _RoMa _is the second motor yacht launched from the newly established Viareggio-based shipyard Viareggio Superyachts (VSY), conceived by naval architect Angelo Arnaboldi and yacht designer Espen Oeino.

Others who helped bring the yacht to fruition include owner’s representative Markus Hanny of Diham Capital Management & Consulting, German yachting consultant and surveyor Stefan Zucker of Zucker and Partner, and Katharina Raczek of interior design company Newcruise.

Their input has resulted in a stunning vessel. RoMa’s deck is divided into three distinct areas. In the centre is a well-equipped gymnasium. Aft is an open-plan deck, where outdoor furniture can be arranged to suit a variety of occasions, with the exception of alfresco dinners, which are a function of the deck below the upper deck. Sheltered by the sun deck overhang, this is an intimate place to dine that offers the possibility of cocktails and after-dinner activities in the adjacent upper saloon.

The main deck aft is equipped with loose furniture compatible with its roles as a sports and relaxation area. From here, stairs descend to the large teak-decked area that hinges open from the stern.

The interior design of RoMa is reduced elegance at its best, making ubiquitous use of pale woods and light materials, offset with darker, contrasting elements. The majority of the furniture, accessories and fittings were designed in house by Newcruise and beautifully constructed by Gehr Interior.

The main saloon is simply but comfortably furnished with a pair of L-shaped white chenille-covered settees and accompanying side tables. Aft, an onyx-topped bar is conveniently positioned in the walnut and ebony-floored entrance lobby, while a circular dining table lies forward. Both walls and furniture conceal complex technology.

Forward of the saloon, on the yacht’s starboard side, is a traditional entrance lobby in which a glass lift shaft rises from the lower deck guest cabin to the bridge deck. Four doors veneered in book-matched burl walnut open off the passageway leading forward from the lobby.

The first opens into a small cinema that also serves as an electronic games room. The three remaining doors open to delightful double cabins that revel in wide views through their huge windows. Equipped with sophisticated audio-visual suites, each has white linen walls with contrasting greens and blues, pale anigre furniture and en suites lined with white Estremos marble. The VIP also has a dressing room.

The master suite is also entered from this passageway. Stairs rise to a mezzanine deck level and a remarkable D-shaped room, with bed to port and sitting area to starboard, looking out over the bows through 180 degrees of windows. Walls are lined with white silk, while on the floor is a luscious long-tufted white silk carpet. Just aft of the bedroom is the master bathroom, featuring a bath and combination steam and shower room, while opposite is a spacious dressing room.

The crew quarters on board RoMa are pleasantly sized, and there is a mess room as well as a crew lounge.

Mechanical and technical areas are also very well thought out. On the bridge, the Kongsberg control and navigation system includes a full ECDIS system, radars with chart overlays, a conning screen and system monitor. In pride of place on the dashboard is the dynamic positioning system that links the extremely quiet Brunvoll bowthruster and the Schottel pump-jet sternthruster with the rudders.

Notably, RoMa holds the RINA Green Star Gold Plus and ABS ES classification in recognition of its environmentally friendly equipment aboard, including the Biodisk Sewage Treatment plant.

The 203-foot (62m) luxury superyacht RoMa is beyond impressive. From her comfortable on-deck living areas to her contemporary interior spaces that were inspired by the ocean, RoMA provides the perfect platform for an exceptional charter experience from the moment you embark.

Launched in 2010 by Viareggio Superyachts, RoMA features impeccable design courtesy of famed Norwegian architect Espen Oeino. The yacht’s lavish, modern interior style was created by Katharina Raczek from Newcruise. She conceptualized a pristine color palate of crisp whites enhanced by golds and deep reds with hints of green. The interior décor pays homage to the sea with nuanced touches such as the main salon’s sand-like carpet and the Nautilus sea shell-like laser-cut paneling on the main staircase.

The spacious main salon is ideally suited for relaxing and socializing. The space features seating, a backlit onyx bar and coffee tables. Forward is formal dining for 12 at a beautiful circular table. The main deck also is home to the master stateroom located furthest forward. This elegant space features a king-size bed as well as a pullout sofa. Panoramic windows provide incredible views and natural light. The en-suite bathroom has his-and-hers sinks and a bathtub and a dressing room rounds out the lavish suite. Three additional en-suite staterooms also are found on the main deck. A fifth stateroom is located on the upper deck and the sixth is found below deck for added privacy. Twelve guests are comfortably accommodated on board.

RoMa’s on-board movie theater is a favorite space for guests after a day on the water. The full-beam skylounge features seating and a game table and beautiful nautical-inspired décor. Aft of the skylounge is a large alfresco dining table and built-in lounge seating. This is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor meals.

The sundeck aboard RoMa is a favorite place for guests to spend sun-soaked days. From the loungers and adjustable sunpads to the large pool and bar, what’s not to enjoy? This space also has an air-conditioned gym that offers impressive views as you work out.

RoMa comes with an outstanding inventory of water toys. Easily launched from her beautiful beach club, play with paddleboards, water skis, Jet Skis, Seabobs and snorkeling gear. The crew can set up the enormous waterslide for fast fun. A water golf game will keep everyone on their toys and the Castoldi Jet tender can take guests anywhere they want to go. RoMa is a PADI Superyacht Dive Boat and her onboard scuba instructors ensure total safety for all guests. She also is a RYA Personal Water Craft (PWC) School ensuring that all guests are able to use the Jet Skis and other toys. The yacht’s licensed masseuse/beautician provides a variety of spa treatments for guests. RoMa’s captain is well versed in yoga and meditation and is always willing to share his expertise on these and any other fields.

Performance & Range

RoMa is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles from her 158,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. RoMa features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

Set against the backdrop of your chosen cruising ground, you and your guests can enjoy endless days of fun on the water with the exceptional collection of water toys and accessories aboard RoMa. Principle among these is a Flyboard for soaring over the water or swimming like a dolphin. Also there is a waterslide for guests of all ages to enjoy. Divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht that could reveal key details of its sinking.

The entrepreneur and dad-of-two, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates”, died alongside his teenage daughter when his superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily on August 19.

Prosecutors investigating the sinking deployed six elite divers from special forces unit “Comsubin” who have made repeated dives down to the sunken vessel.

Divers from the Italian Navy were able to retrieve the surveillance equipment including computers and hard drives.

Now they are to be analysed in specialised labs, according to a report.

The devices will be examined to see if any data can be revealed, or potentially a video showing how the yacht sank – including whether any doors were left open.

The captain of the doomed Bayesian, James Cutfield, 51, from New Zealand, is being investigated for manslaughter.

Mr Cutfield, along with two other members of his crew, are being investigated by Italian authorities for culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter.

Prosecutors are also probing UK ship engineer Tim Parker-Eaton, and sailor Matthew Griffith, 22, under the same charges.

The investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will be brought against any of the men.

At a press conference at the Termini Imerese Courthouse on Saturday, Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said there may have been “behaviours that were not perfectly in order with regard to the responsibility everybody had”.

His team will probe if hatches were left open, allowing water to flood in.

They will also look into whether the crew raised the alarm before escaping.

He vowed to “discover how much they knew and to what extent all the people (passengers) were warned”.

“There could be in fact the question of homicide. But this is the beginning of the inquiry, we cannot exclude anything at all …We will establish each element’s (crew) responsibility,” Mr Cartosio added. “For me, it is probable that offences were committed — that it could be a case of manslaughter.”

The body of Mike Lynch and his four guests, Christopher, Neda, Jonathan and Judy were found in the first cabin on the left.

Divers recovered five of the six missing passengers – including Lynch – in one cabin on the left side of the yacht which settled on its right side on the sea floor.

A judicial investigation into the yacht tragedy is ongoing.

The luxury vessel was caught up in a horror storm which caused it to sink in the early hours of the morning.

Of the 22 onboard, 15 survived with 11 including Mike Lynch’s wife rescued on an inflatable life raft.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was the last passenger to be discovered in the third cabin.

The survivors of the wreck, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, 57, left Sicily in a private jet last Sunday.
