Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?

Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far:

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.

Who is missing?

A collage of three men

Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include:

  • Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
  • Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
  • The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued?

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

  • Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
  • Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
  • Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
  • New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
  • A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

Two boats in the sea

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

A top New York City lawyer and his jewelry designer wife are among the six still unaccounted for after the Bayesian superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning.

Of the 22 people aboard the 184-foot luxury British vessel , the Bayesian, fifteen were rescued after it overturned amid bad weather conditions - one body was found, and lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo are among the six passengers still unaccounted for.

The Italian coast guard said the sailboat overturned sometime after 5 a.m. off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, where it was anchored. Ten crew members and 12 passengers, including British, American and Canadian nationalities were onboard.

Before becoming a partner at prestigious law firm Clifford Chance in New York City, 59-year-old Fordham graduate Morvillo was a former federal prosecutor who worked on the investigation of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, according to his online bio. Currently, he specializes in cases involving insider trading and corporate fraud.

Morvillo most recently represented British tech tycoon billionaire Mike Lynch, the owner of the capsized Bayesian who is still missing along with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, in a fraud trial. Lynch was accused of fraud related to Hewlett Packard's acquisition of his company, Autonomy.

Morvillo, who owns residences in New York City and South Kent, celebrated Lynch's June 6 acquittal on LinkedIn in one of his final social media posts before the luxury boat accident, eerily writing that his family would live "happily ever after."

"A huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant and beautiful daughters, Sabrino Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo," he wrote after thanking the legal team that helped in Lynch's legal success.

Criminal defense lawyer and podcast host David Oscar Markus interviewed Morvillo last week, describing him as a "superstar lawyer" in a blog post.

"Chris dedicated over a decade of his career to obtaining justice for Mike Lynch," Markus wrote. "He got it and then for this to happen.... it's tough to find the right words."

Lynch's acquittal "end[ed] a 13-year legal battle, regarded as one of Silicon Valley's biggest-ever fraud cases," Clifford Chance wrote in a press release.

"The verdict closes the book on a relentless 13-year effort to pin HP's well-documented ineptitude on Dr. Lynch," the firm wrote. "Thankfully, the truth has finally prevailed. We thank Dr. Lynch for his trust throughout this ordeal and hope that he can now return home to England to resume his life and continue innovating."

At the end of the statement, Lynch hauntingly said that he was "looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field."

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily - with one person confirmed to have died.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Four other Britons and two Americans remain missing, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, according to Italian media. The entrepreneur's wife Angela Bacares was rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank with 22 people on board - 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have also tipped over more easily with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

"The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. [It] pushed the boat hard over on its side. (The boat) filled with water before it could right."

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at around 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those missing.

The 59-year-old owner of the yacht is known as the "British Bill Gates" and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

who owns gale winds yacht

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges , which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP).

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The vessel had passengers from Britain, America and Canada, the Italian coastguard said.

Most of those on board were British, Italian news outlets have reported, adding that the others were from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Charlotte Golunski

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News.

Eight of those rescued were transferred to local hospitals and all were in stable condition, local media reported.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel, which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

At Least 1 Dead and 6 Missing After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

Fifteen other people were rescued. Expert divers were called in to carry out search operations in the deep water. Among the missing was a British software mogul, Mike Lynch.

At least one person was killed and six others, including a British software mogul, were missing on Monday after a sailing yacht carrying 22 people sank during a violent storm off the coast of Sicily, Italian officials said.

The yacht sank after a storm “with strong winds” struck around 5 a.m., according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations. The vessel had been anchored about a half-mile off Porticello, about 12 miles east of the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

Camper & Nicholsons, managers of the sailing yacht, said in an emailed statement that there were 12 guests and 10 crew onboard.

The authorities have yet to determine what caused the yacht to sink. “This will be ascertained later,” Mr. Pischedda said, adding that several crew members were in the hospital and had not spoken to investigators.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, he said.

One of those unaccounted for is Mike Lynch, a British software mogul who was acquitted in the United States in June of fraud, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

His wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued. Mr. Lynch, who once was described as Britain’s Bill Gates, had fought for more than a decade against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold it his company, Autonomy, for $11 billion. The legal battle represented one of the biggest fraud cases in Silicon Valley history.

Salvatore Cocina, a top official with Sicily’s civil protection agency, said that Mr. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah Lynch, was also among the six people missing. All were passengers on the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

Mr. Cocina said the body that had been recovered was that of the yacht’s cook.

A passenger ship sailing under the flag of the Netherlands, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, anchored nearby, provided immediate assistance to the 15 surviving passengers, Mr. Pischedda said.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the Sir Robert, said in a telephone interview that he’d had to steady his ship to “keep it in position” during what he described as very strong winds. During the storm, the yacht seemed to disappear, he said. “At a certain moment she was gone behind us,” he said.

After the wind dropped down, “we couldn’t see the yacht any more, and then we saw a red flare,” he added. When he and a colleague went to check out the flare’s position, they spotted a “life raft adrift with 15 people on board, one of them a baby and four people injured,” he said. They were taken aboard the Sir Robert and Captain Börner contacted the Coast Guard, which brought the survivors to shore.

Captain Börner said he didn’t know when the ship went down because the storm made it difficult to see clearly. The wind was “really violent,” he said.

For the most part, the survivors didn’t speak much he said. “They were all under shock,” he said. “It was a bad, bad situation.”

Monday’s storm surprised experts with its intensity.

Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time of the accident.

“It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said of the storm. He could not rule out that it had been a waterspout, or small tornado, but nevertheless called it “an important event.”

Italy’s firefighter corps said that its divers had started carrying out a search and rescue mission at dawn.

On Monday afternoon, expert divers with the firefighter corps arrived in Porticello to search the sunken vessel, which was under about 165 feet of water.

Operations at that depth, were “complicated,” and required specialized divers, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman in Porticello, told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that he saw a waterspout — a sort of mini-tornado — that lasted “about 12 minutes” off the shore of Porticello shortly before 4 a.m.

Around 4:10, he said he saw a red flare go off “about 500 meters from the shore.” He said he waited for the weather to calm down, and went out about 20 minutes later to the site where the flare had gone off.

“We found only the cushions, and a few planks” floating in the water, he told the newspaper. There was no sign of the ship, and he immediately called the coast guard.

The boat, identified by Italian officials as the Bayesian, is an Italian-made 56-meter-long sailing yacht first launched in 2008, according to the website marinetraffic.com , which tracks ships. It sails under the flag of Britain, and was built by Perini Navi, an Italian luxury yacht maker.

Eight of the 15 passengers who were rescued were taken to hospitals in Palermo, the coast guard said. Camper & Nicholsons, the managers of the yacht, said its priority was to “provide all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew.”

Giuseppe D’Agostino, the mayor of Santa Flavia, which includes Porticello, said the survivors would be cared for at a local hotel. The city had also brought them immediate necessities, like toiletries and clothes.

He said in a telephone interview that he had not spoken to the survivors since “they’re in shock.”

The youngest passenger onboard, a 1-year-old girl named Sophie, was taken to the Di Cristina hospital in Palermo with her mother, Charlotte, who had some scrapes and cuts, said Domenico Cipolla, director of the pediatric emergency room at the hospital.

Sophie’s father was in the hospital’s adult emergency room and had been in contact with his wife and daughter by phone, Dr. Cipolla said. He was not permitted to release the family’s surname. Both mother and child were in good condition apart from “great emotional stress” he added in a telephone interview.

“We’re comforting them more than curing them,” he said.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch and three other Brits are among six people missing from a ship that sunk off the coast of Sicily , along with one person confirmed dead.

Witnesses say there was a party taking place onboard the Bayesian, carrying a British flag, and it was anchored near the port when it was surprised by a sudden onslaught of rough weather. The yacht is believed to be owned by the family of Mr Lynch who is among those missing.

Divers from Italian emergency services are continuing to look for those who have not been accounted for after the Bayesian sunk around 5am this morning off the coast of Porticello, near the capital Palermo.

There were 22 people on board the luxury yach t that is understood to have sunk during a tornado, with weather warnings having been in place and harrowing CCTV footage from the area showing umbrellas and deckchairs blowing around violently.

The boat went down in poor sailing conditions about half a mile from the coast and it is reported that the captain, who has been badly shaken by the incident, will be interviewed by police. The vessel was in the port of Porticello and last night set sail despite the rough seas and strong winds.

There were reportedly mainly British people onboard but also a New Zealander, a Sri Lankan citizen, two Anglo-French and an Irishman. Four Brits, a Canadian and two Americans are believed to be missing alongside one crew member, a cook - of Canadian origin and resident in Antigua, whose body has reportedly been recovered.

Survivors were first taken to Porticciolo and a one-year-old baby girl - believed to be a Brit - was moved to the Children's Hospital in Palermo as a precaution along with her child's mother, who suffered superficial injuries. Five people are now being looked after at an emergency point in Bagheria.

The 15 people were saved by the ship Sir Robert Baden Powell, which was anchored by the stricken vessel. Captain Karsten Borner of the Dutch ship said that it was able to hold its position in the sea using engines during the storm but then the saw the Bayesan had disappeared.

“We realized that the boat next to ours was no longer there. We saw a red signal flare coming from the area of the boat, so my first officer and I climbed into the tender and went to provide assistance: we recovered 15 survivors, including a little girl. After raising the alarm, the coast guard units also arrived. We heard screams, we continued to search the area but we did not find anyone other than the 15 survivors who had already been rescued."

Witnesses have said the vessel was still at anchor in front of the port of Porticello when the tornado struck and the storm broke the large sail mast which is believed to have led the boat to capsize. Another boat, also with its anchor down, nearby reportedly came to the rescue.

"That vessel was all lit up," says a man in Porticello. "At around 4:30 in the morning it was gone. A beautiful vessel where there had been a party. A normal holiday day spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy. The vessel was not far from the port. It would have taken very little to raise the anchor and head for the port. Evidently they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid the sinking."

The wreck of the Bayesian has been located 49 metres below the surface by divers. The Italian fire service wrote at 10am local time on X: "#Palermo , shipwreck of vessel off the coast of Porticello, 15 people rescued, 7 reported missing: from dawn, divers from the #vigilidelfuoco engaged in the search. Wreck identified at 50 meters depth, speleo divers arriving."

The Bayesian is an elegant 56-meter sailing boat with a gross tonnage of 473 tons, built by the Perini Navi Viareggio shipyard in February 2008, refitted in 2020, and designed for luxury travel. According to Vessel Finder, the boat arrived in Porticello after a stop in Milazzo and a passage in front of Cefalù.

The deck area is 436 square meters and the six cabins occupy an area of 143 square meters. On board, the builder says, it can accommodate the owner and 11 guests in addition to 10 crew members. Bayesian is built with an aluminium hull and superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by two 965 HP MTU 8-cylinder diesel engines, it cruises at 12 knots and reaches a top speed of 15 knots. The boat has the second tallest mast in the world and the largest aluminium mast at 75 meters.

The mayor of Bagheria, Filippo Maria Tripoli, wrote on Facebook : "This morning off the coast of Santa Flavia a foreign boat sunk due to bad weather, 15 people recovered and seven missing. Already all the police forces and emergency services are operational, our Red Cross volunteers are present and the availability of other civil protection associations of the territory has been asked, alerted by the regional civil protection department."

Crew Information

Crew of GALE WINDS|Captain

Captain: Karen Holton

Captain Karen Holtan – Karen is originally from Oregon and while growing up on a small farm watched Jacque Cousteau specials any chance she got. After becoming a SCUBA instructor, she started working full time on the water and worked her way up from deckhand/instructor to Captain. After 4 years on SCUBA vessels Karen then transferred to yachts and has had a chance to work from Canada to the Caribbean to Croatia. When not onboard helping guests, Karen loves to travel, take photos and get in the water anytime she can. First Mate/Engineer Avery Smith – Avery grew up in Charleston, South Carolina where he was never far from the water. He grew up fishing and hunting all over the Lowcountry. After graduating from Clemson University, he moved to South Florida to pursue his passion for the water professionally. He has spent the last three years working on an array of yachts and fishing boats all over the East Coast and Bahamas. Avery found that yachting combines his love for the outdoors with his interest in traveling the world. Chief Stewardess Savannah Moltzen – Savannah was born and raised in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina. While growing up near the ocean has given her a step forward in the yachting industry, she also enjoys exploring the world of everything arts, music, and travel. She loves being a part of a community that has a ton of that to offer, and it shows. After her time spent with the university of South Carolina she made her move into the yachting world in 2018. She brings the highest level of care and standards to all guests and her fellow crew, all while maintaining an energetic and well-mannered demeanor. In the future she plans on transferring her skills and success in yachting to becoming a successful AirBnB SuperHost. Deckhand/Stewardess Lauren Wilke – Lauren grew up in Blue Point, a small town on the south shore of Long Island. She grew up boating, sailing and being at the beach every summer. Volleyball has always been a huge part of her life and she was given the opportunity to advance her athletic and academic career at Stonehill College in Massachusetts. After graduating college with a degree in criminology, she worked at a vineyard on the east end of Long Island serving and learning about wine. She moved to Florida to enter the yachting industry and after only a handful of months she learned both roles of deck maintenance and interior knowledge. Yachting combines her passion for boating, traveling and meeting new people. Chef Jennifer Egli – After leaving the States to live full time in the Bahamas, Chef found the yachting industry and started working in it almost 10 years now. She started as an all-rounder mate/deck/stew cook. After a while she realized her happiest place was in the galley being creative and feeding everyone! She has lived in the Bahamas for 14 years now and has had the opportunity to travel extensively in this industry. She loves using locally sourced fresh ingredients as much as possible to prepare fresh and flavorful food for both guests and crew. Cooking has been a serious passion since she was little and now she gets to do it while living with her Bahamian husband in the islands she loves.

After becoming a SCUBA instructor, she started working full time on the water and worked her way up from deckhand/instructor to Captain. After 4 years on SCUBA vessels Karen then transferred to yachts and has had a chance to work from Canada to the Caribbean to Croatia. When not onboard helping guests, Karen loves to travel, take photos and get in the water anytime she can.<br /> <br /> First Mate/Engineer Avery Smith – Avery grew up in Charleston, South Carolina where he was never far from the water. <br /> <br /> Chief Stewardess Savannah Moltzen – Savannah was born and raised in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina. In the future she plans on transferring her skills and success in yachting to becoming a successful AirBnB SuperHost.<br /> <br /> Deckhand/Stewardess Lauren Wilke – Lauren grew up in Blue Point, a small town on the south shore of Long Island. Yachting combines her passion for boating, traveling and meeting new people.<br /> <br /> Chef Jennifer Egli – After leaving the States to live full time in the Bahamas, Chef found the yachting industry and started working in it almost 10 years now. Cooking has been a serious passion since she was little and now she gets to do it while living with her Bahamian husband in the islands she loves.";s:14:"yachtCrewPhoto";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtCrew1Pic";s:76:"https://www.centralyachtagent.com/yachtadmin/yachtlg/yacht6825/6825crew1.jpg";s:13:"yachtCrew2Pic";s:76:"https://www.centralyachtagent.com/yachtadmin/yachtlg/yacht6825/6825crew2.jpg";s:13:"yachtCrew3Pic";s:76:"https://www.centralyachtagent.com/yachtadmin/yachtlg/yacht6825/6825crew3.jpg";s:13:"yachtCrew4Pic";s:76:"https://www.centralyachtagent.com/yachtadmin/yachtlg/yacht6825/6825crew4.jpg";s:13:"yachtCrew5Pic";s:76:"https://www.centralyachtagent.com/yachtadmin/yachtlg/yacht6825/6825crew5.jpg";s:13:"yachtCrew6Pic";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtCrew7Pic";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtCrew8Pic";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtCrew9Pic";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtCrew10Pic";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtCrew1Name";s:12:"Karen Holtan";s:14:"yachtCrew2Name";s:12:"Avery Smith ";s:14:"yachtCrew3Name";s:16:"Savannah Moltzen";s:14:"yachtCrew4Name";s:12:"Lauren Wilke";s:14:"yachtCrew5Name";s:13:"Jennifer Egli";s:14:"yachtCrew6Name";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtCrew7Name";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtCrew8Name";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtCrew9Name";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtCrew10Name";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtCrew1Title";s:7:"Captain";s:15:"yachtCrew2Title";s:19:"First Mate/Engineer";s:15:"yachtCrew3Title";s:16:"Chief Stewardess";s:15:"yachtCrew4Title";s:19:"Deckhand/Stewardess";s:15:"yachtCrew5Title";s:4:"Chef";s:15:"yachtCrew6Title";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtCrew7Title";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtCrew8Title";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtCrew9Title";s:0:"";s:16:"yachtCrew10Title";s:0:"";s:9:"yachtFlag";s:4:"USA ";s:13:"yachtHomePort";s:30:"Florida, Bahamas, New England ";s:14:"yachtWBasePort";s:30:"Florida, Bahamas, New England ";s:8:"yachtRig";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtGrossTons";s:0:"";s:12:"yachtAcNight";s:3:"Yes";s:16:"yachtAcSurCharge";s:0:"";s:9:"yachtTubs";s:1:"0";s:20:"yachtLocationDetails";s:72:"NO DELIVERY FEE for Abacos or Nassau start from November 2022 - May 2023";s:10:"yachtTerms";s:5:"+ ALL";s:13:"yachtCaptOnly";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtSpecialCon";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtContracts";s:0:"";s:21:"yachtConsumptionUnits";s:10:"US Gall/Hr";s:10:"yachtRange";s:0:"";s:11:"yachtPermit";s:1:"2";s:12:"yachtLicense";s:1:"2";s:8:"yachtMca";s:1:"0";s:16:"yachtDeepSeaFish";s:3:"Yes";s:10:"yachtSatTv";s:3:"Yes";s:9:"yachtIpod";s:0:"";s:10:"yachtVideo";s:0:"";s:17:"yachtSailInstruct";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtInternet";s:0:"";s:16:"yachtCaptainOnly";s:0:"";s:16:"yachtBrokerNotes";s:0:"";s:15:"yachtInsCompany";s:0:"";s:11:"yachtPolicy";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtLiability";s:0:"";s:18:"yachtEffectiveDate";s:0:"";s:17:"yachtContractName";s:0:"";s:18:"yachtCoverageAreas";s:0:"";s:12:"yachtInsFlag";s:0:"";s:16:"yachtInsHomeport";s:0:"";s:11:"yachtRegNum";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtConPhone1";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtConPhone2";s:0:"";s:14:"yachtConPhone3";s:0:"";s:11:"yachtConFax";s:0:"";s:17:"yachtWaveConEmail";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtConOther";s:0:"";s:12:"yachtManager";s:14:"Robert J. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

Wife of missing Brit reveals how she escaped sinking yacht after it capsized and killed one

Wife of missing Brit reveals how she escaped sinking yacht after it capsized and killed one

The bayesian yacht sank in the early hours on monday morning (19 august).

Rhiannon Ingle

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday morning (19 August) when a yacht named Bayesian sank during intense storms off the coast of Palermo, Italy.

Twelve passengers who were travelling within the vessel were guests, while 10 were crew.

According to local Italian media, the body of one individual - believed to be the yacht's on-board chef - was found near the shipwreck, while six other passengers - including British tech boss Mike Lynch - still remain missing at sea.

The ship was moored around half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at about 5am local time on Monday (19 August) as the area was hit by a storm.

Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew onboard, including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, 57, were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

The billionaire's wife has since revealed exactly how she escaped the sinking yacht after it capsized while she eagerly waits for updates regarding her husband and 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, who are among the six still missing.

Bacares, who is now in a wheelchair after reportedly walking on broken glass to escape the sinking yacht, told Italian outlet La Republicca that she felt a 'slight tilt' before the £14 million super yacht capsized.

The outlet also reports that Bacares also has bandages on others part of her body.

She explained how she and her husband weren't too worried at first after feeling the tilt.

However, as she got up to investigate things further, the sound of shattering glass triggered a panic.

Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast. (PA)

The British-flagged Bayesian is resting on the seabed at a depth of 50 metres while the search for Lynch, Hannah and the other missing passengers and crew on board the superyacht resumed on Tuesday (20 August).

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, said that inspections of the wreck on Monday were 'unsuccessful' due to furniture obstructing passages.

Local fisherman, Giuseppe Cefalu, also told the PA news agency through a translator that he saw a 'tornado' close to the port of Porticello on Monday morning (19 August).

Mr Cefalu said he and his brother, Fabio, saw a flare in the sky at around 5am.

The pair aided efforts to locate people in the water after the yacht sank, but Mr Cefalu said he only saw cushions and a buoy.

He said weather conditions on the morning of the sinking were 'fierce', with 'very strong' wind and rain.

The 'Bayesian' Yacht Owner Is Missing After a Tornado Sank the Luxury Vessel

T he 184-foot luxury yacht called The Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024. Per CNN , six passengers are still missing at the time of writing — the original manifest included 22 people on board.

It's being reported that 15 people were rescued, and one passenger died. One of the missing is Mike Lynch, a tech entrepreneur whose wife's firm, Revcom, technically owns the superyacht. Mike has a very interesting past, which involves one of the biggest fraud cases in Silicon Valley history.

Read on for details.

So, who is Mike Lynch, the 'Bayesian' yacht owner who is missing?

According to The Washington Post , Mike is not accounted for after The Bayesian sank near Sicily in what's being called a "freak storm." Reportedly, the yacht's mast broke due to high winds, and the huge vessel sank.

The unthinkable accident resulted in Mike's 18-year-old daughter Hannah also being missing.

His wife, Angela Bacares, was reportedly rescued.

Per the outlet, Mike has been referred to as "Britain’s version of Bill Gates ." His company, Autonomy, sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion over a decade ago.

But as AP News reports, that mega-deal soured when Mike was accused of falsifying documents leading up to the sale of Autonomy. A multi-year court case ensued, with Mike eventually being cleared of charges in the United States. Still, per the outlet, he was not done dealing with a civil case in his native Britain at the time of the yacht accident.

Mike Lynch's co-defendant was killed the same week the 'Bayesian' sank.

In a turn of events worthy of a movie, Mike's co-defendant in the case against him died on Saturday, just a few days before The Bayesian plummeted to 160 feet below the surface of the sea.

Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed by a car while jogging in England, was the former vice-president of finance for Autonomy, per The Guardian . He was initially placed on life support but later died.

Given the incredibly coincidental nature of the two awful tragedies, of course, conspiracy theories are cropping up on social media.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Christopher Morvillo, the lawyer who helped clear the men of charges in the U.S., is among those missing after The Bayesian sank, per the New York Post .

Two months before going missing, Christopher oddly posted to LinkedIn for the first time .

"Following the jury's swift exoneration of our client, Mike Lynch, and his colleague, Steven Chamberlain, last week in San Francisco, I finally have something to say that I would like others to hear," he wrote in part.

After thanking many people who helped win the case, he finished the post by writing, "A huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."
