Vous avez quelques 100aine de millions d’euros en trop sur votre compte en banque et vous vous ennuyez ? Les milliardaires de la planète ont pour vous la solution : faites-vous construire un bon gros yacht. A partir de 24 mètres, on appelle ça un super-yacht, un méga-yacht, voire un giga-yacht (si si, ça se dit). Pour en apercevoir, il ne suffit pas d’aller bien loin : lorgnez du côté de la french riveria, genre Cannes, Antibes, ou Monaco. Alors, qui a le plus gros (et surtout le plus cher) ?

Eclipse (construit en 2009 - $800 million)

Ce yacht de luxe appartient à l’homme d’affaires russe Roman Abramovich. Il s’agit (pour l’instant) du bateau privé le plus long du monde : 162,5 mètres. Niveau équipement, on est pas mal : 2 pistes d’hélicoptère, 3 vedettes d’appoint, 1 (seule) piscine, plusieurs jacuzzis, 1 cinéma, 1 sous-marin miniature, 1 aquarium, un système de détection de missiles (voilà voilà), et 24 cabines dotées de vitres pare-balles. Au cas où…

Project Azzam (2013 - $622 million)

Toujours en construction, ce yacht au propriétaire caché est parti pour devenir le yacht le plus long du monde : 180 mètres.

Topaz (2012 - $620 million)

On ne connait pas le nom de son milliardaire de propriétaire, mais il vient juste de sortir de l’usine, et il a raté de 15 mètres le titre du yacht le plus long du monde. C’est con. 15 mètres…

Dubai (2006 - $350 million)

Propriété de l’émir de Dubaï (d’où le nom, pas bête), Mohammed ben Rachid Al Maktoum, ce yacht de 162 mètres (le 2ème plus long du monde) navigue très peu et reste la plupart à Dubaï. Du gâchis.

Superyacht A (2008 - $323 million)

Vous le trouvez magnifique ? Normal, il a été designé par Philippe Starck. Et il appartient au milliardaire russe Andrey Melnichenko. Le plus beau yacht du monde ?

Al Said (2007 - $300 million)

Propriété du sultan d’Oman, Qabus ibn Said, ce yacht est le 3ème plus long du monde. C’est tout ? Oui, c’est tout.

Pelorus (2004 - $300 million)

Construit à la base pour le russe Roman Abramovich (encore lui), il a depuis été vendu au producteur David Geffen (Asylum Records, Geffen Records…)

Dilbar (2008 - $256 million)

Popriété du milliardaire russe Alisher Usmanov, c’est un des rares super yacht à être conçu pour moins polluer. On a dit moins, pas peu.

Al Mirqab (2008 - $250 million)

C’est le 11e plus grand yacht privé du monde (la lose), et il appartient à l’émir du Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.

Lady Moura (1990 – $210 million)

Un des plus anciens Super Yacht (1990), mais totalement refait en 2007 (ouf). Il est la propriété de Nasser Al-Rashid, homme d’affaires et milliardaire saoudien. Pour la petite histoire, il s’est échoué comme une merde dans la baie de Cannes pendant le festival, en 2007. Bien joué champion.

Seven Seas (2011 - $200 million)

86 petits mètres seulement pour ce yacht, qui appartient à … Steven Spielberg. Avec une grande salle de cinéma à l’intérieur, forcément. Pour projeter Les Dents de la Mer ?

(bonus) Eos (2006 - $150 million)

Le premier « voilier » 3-mats de ce classement, et le plus long du monde (92m). Il appartient au milliardaire américain Barry Diller.

Record de commandes de yachts : qu’importe la pandémie, les plus riches se font plaisir

Comme après la crise financière de 2008, les carnets de commandes des constructeurs de superyachts sont plus remplis que jamais, avec 1 200 ventes conclues en 2021. Les super-riches jouissent ainsi de la consolidation de leur fortune lors des mois de pandémie, explique le quotidien britannique The Times.

“Les super-riches abandonnent la pandémie dans leur sillage”, titre The Times ce jeudi 9 décembre pour évoquer “le boom des superyachts” . Les commandes de ces bateaux de plus de 24 mètres de long ont en effet battu tous les records cette année.

En 2021, plus de 1 200 de ces vaisseaux de luxe ont été commandés ou étaient en construction. Ces transactions ont bondi de 25 % en un an. Le précédent record s’élevait à 1 008 ventes et date de 2009, lorsque le monde se remettait de la crise financière de l’année précédente.

Ces chiffres sont issus de la dernière édition du Global Order Book (Classement des manufacturiers), “qui doit être publié par [le magazine] Boat International le mois prochain”, poursuit The Times . Son rédacteur en chef, Stewart Campbell, livre quelques détails sur la tendance actuelle :

Si le secteur des petits superyachts est en plein boom, avec des carnets de commandes déjà complets pour les prochaines années dans de nombreuses gammes de produits, on enregistre également des records en ce qui concerne le nombre de très grands bateaux et de superyachts d’exploration en construction. Une tendance qui confirme le goût de plus en plus prononcé pour l’aventure de la part des propriétaires actuels de superyachts.”

En tête du classement, l’Italie, qui a enregistré 523 commandes. Le Royaume-Uni occupe, quant à lui, la cinquième place, avec 81 superyachts en construction d’une moyenne de 28,2 mètres.

Le plus grand yacht du monde

Le plus colossal de ces navires se nomme REV Ocean et mesure 182,9 mètres. Avec une livraison prévue pour 2024, il s’impose déjà comme le plus grand yacht du monde.

“Même si vingt-sept superyachts de plus de 100 mètres sont en cours de construction, ce sont les bateaux de plus petite taille qui jouent un rôle déterminant dans l’augmentation du nombre de mises en chantier”, explique le Times.

Plus de 400 commandes concernent des yachts dont la longueur est comprise entre 24 et 30 mètres, soit une augmentation des ventes de 30,5 % par rapport à l’année dernière. Celles concernant les 30 à 45 mètres bondissent de 28 %, et les plus de 45 mètres de 10,5 %.

Les ventes de voiliers ont également grimpé en flèche, avec notamment la commande d’un 127 mètres par le fondateur d’Amazon, Jeff Bezos .

Le plus ancien des quotidiens britanniques (1785) et le plus connu à l’étranger appartient depuis 1981 à News UK, propriété du milliardaire Rupert Murdoch. De tendance conservatrice, il a longtemps été le journal de référence et la voix de l’establishment. En 2016, The Times se prononce contre la sortie du Royaume-Uni de l’Union européenne et continue de militer pour la préservation de bonnes relations avec le continent.

Aux quelque 360 000 lecteurs du journal en version papier s’ajoutent plus de 400 000 abonnés numériques. Au début de l’agression russe en Ukraine, le 24 février 2022, le site de The Times (partagé avec son édition dominicale The Sunday Times ) enregistre 1 000 nouveaux abonnements par jour, reflet de son excellent travail de terrain en matière d’actualité internationale. Sept reporters couvrent le conflit en permanence, sur le terrain.

En 2020, News UK a lancé Times Radio, station de radio généraliste pensée pour concurrencer BBC Radio 4, l’équivalent britannique de France Inter . Animées en partie par des journalistes de la rédaction de The Times , ses émissions attirent un demi-million d’auditeurs par semaine.

Les super-riches font décoller le marché des superyachts

La crise du covid n'a pas freiné l'arrivée de nouveaux milliardaires dans le monde. Au contraire. Des super-riches qui jettent à nouveau leur dévolu sur les superyachts de luxe.

Ce marché connaît en effet une dynamique quasi sans précédent selon le concessionnaire Fraser Yachts, cité par Reuters: "l'année 2021 est nettement plus performante que n'importe laquelle des 12 dernières années", indique-t-il.

200 nouveaux superyachts cette année

Les ventes de navires de luxe de plus de 30 mètres dont le prix peut atteindre jusqu'à 600 millions de dollars ont ainsi progressé de plus de 8% au cours des neuf premiers mois de 2021 par rapport à la même période de 2019, selon le site spécialisé Superyacht Group également cité par l'agence de presse.

Plus de 200 nouveaux superyachts ont touché l'eau pour la première fois au cours des neuf premiers mois de 2021, contre 165 pour la même période de 2019.

Les industriels spécialisés se frottent les mains. L'italien Ferretti fait état d'un carnet de commandes supérieur à 900 millions d'euros entre janvier et septembre, bien au-dessus des 691 millions d'euros enregistrés en 2019.

Toujours en Italie, Azimut Benetti a vu ses ventes tripler par rapport à 2020 pour atteindre 1,2 milliard d'euros en août, soutenu par la demande des clients américains.

The yacht-spotter's guide to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion.

Renaissance

Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire

Renaissance is the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts . Which is quite the feat for Freire, a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. With 7,200GT to play with, her list of amenities include a sushi bar, a dedicated hair and beauty salon, a ballet bar with a mirror for stretching and two cinemas – one indoor, one outdoor. The owner's deck is described as "palatial" and comes with its own a media room, a lounge with bar and dining and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi for six.

Length : 52.1m Builder : Sanlorenzo

Spotted pulling into port with a Bugatti on the aft, Seven Sins is the perfect yacht for soaking up the Formula One action. She is part of Sanlorenzo's hugely successful 52Steel series, with features including a glass-bottomed pool on the aft that floods the beach club below with light. Her palatial interior design offers plenty of space for kicking back and watching the races in a more relaxed setting and her sharp Officina Italiana Design exterior is sure to attract attention in Monaco harbour. 

Length : 90m Builder : Benetti

Lionheart was launched in 2016 as the shipyard's largest build to date, though she was surpassed by the 107-metre Mar (ex Lana ) four years later. She was the third yacht to be ordered from Benetti by the same owner, Sir Philip Green. While her curvy exterior and private balconies will be visible to those visiting Port Hercule this weekend, interiors have always been shrouded in secrecy. It is known that  Stefano Natucci  collaborated with Benetti on the exterior design and Green & Mingarelli Design  is responsible for the interior design.

Fountainhead

Length : 87.8m   Builder : Feadship

Created with family use in mind, Fountainhead features a recreation room and library that can be converted into cabins to supplement the six existing guest cabins and owner's suite. She was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design , though "a signature blend of art, antiques and aesthetics" by Belgian artist Axel Vervoordt are also displayed throughout.  Leisure highlights include a fully-equipped gym with health club, a contra-flow swimming pool and a tender garage that houses wave runners, kayaks, surfboard and diving equipment, among others. The superyacht is named after the famous novel by Ayn Rand.

Coral Ocean

Length : 72.6m Builder : Lürssen

A World Superyacht Award winner, Coral Ocean earned the judges' commendation following a sensitive, multi-million refit that converted the heritage vessel into a successful charter platform. All deck spaces were upgraded, including a reimagined sundeck that now houses a glass-sided spa pool, sunbathing and observation deck and a central deckhouse with a television lounge, dining area and bar. Coral Ocean was one of the largest launches of 1994 and her secrecy for the first two decades of her life solidified her as an icon for the German shipyard. She is owned by Australian garbage waste disposal giant Ian Malouf. 

Length : 72m   Builder : Lürssen

Delivered in 2006, Titania  (ex Apoise ) was put up for auction by her owner in 2010 and was snapped up for €33.75 million – roughly half the estimated value – by Phones4U tycoon John Caudwell. He then went on to refit, lengthen and rename the superyacht, which he discusses in an exclusive interview with BOAT International . Designed by Espen Øino and Francois Zuretti , the Lürssen was the star yacht in season six of The Crown and is a popular charter yacht. No wonder, as she sports a beach club that can be converted into a nightclub, an onboard masseuse and beautician and an impressive array of watersports – including a waterpark and a 12.7-metre slide.

Length : 70m Builder : Royal Denship

Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi , a trawler-style expedition yacht that has since been refitted to varying degrees. The most recent work was done at Lusben in 2022 and involved a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large, wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well. Design highlights include a black-tiled spa (with heated massage table), a cinema, a barbecue and dining area that turns into a disco and a dining room that doubles as a conference space. An elevator serves all decks.

Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts

The flagship of the Dutch shipyard, Loon (ex Icon ) is now anchored in Port Hercule where she is likely to cause another social media sensation . She was delivered in 2010 to a design by RWD , with clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet with IYC .

Length : 66m   Builder : Oceanco

AHS has undergone numerous name changes (she was sold and renamed mostly recently in January ) but started life as Dilbar in 2005. A successful charter yacht, she can be easily distinguished in port by her classic canoe stern. An interior by the late Alberto Pinto provides accommodation across eight cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite with its own lounge and adjoining private office. Other highlights include an outdoor cinema, a beamy sundeck with 19,000-litre pool and a helipad that transforms into a sun lounge.

Length : 49.9m Builder : Zepter

The Croatian yard's first superyacht offering, JoyMe is usually berthed in Cap d’Ail but has been sighted in Monaco for the past two Grands Prix. She’s one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif – said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. Leisure highlights include a Pop Art-inspired interior by  Marijana Radovic , a sundeck with a 3.5-metre Jacuzzi and a lower deck arranged with a gym, Finnish sauna and Hammam spa with sea views. Accommodation is across five cabins, including the "VIP deck" owner's cabin which has a walk-in bathroom, lounge and private sunbathing platform on the bow.

Length : 45.2m Builder : Royal Hakvoort

The most recent delivery on the list, Milele is one of this year's World Superyacht Award winners . According to the judges, she stood out thanks to her "incredible build quality” and surprising spaces on board. Most notable of these is the innovative foredeck garage, which stores a submarine and crane, and has a full entertainment suite with a large television screen built into its hatch. She was designed inside and out by Omega Architects with an efficient hull design by Van Oossanen Naval Architects .

1. Stefano Pessina

Italian pharmaceutical magnate and chairman of Walgreens Boots Alliance is #127 on Forbes Billionaire List with a whopping $11.1 billion in net worth . Pessina started his career with his family’s pharmaceutical wholesale company in Italy. With what some consider lightening speed, Pessina turned the business into world-leading pharmaceutical giant, buying up most small pharmaceutical companies in Europe and merging with UK drugstore Boots. In a swift takeover of the Boots Alliance, and successive merger with US drugstore chain, Walgreens, Pessina made windfall profits. He moved to Monaco decades ago and has relinquished his Italian citizenship for Monagasque.

Interesting fact: Stefano Pessina is a nuclear engineering by training. He is also known to collect art.

2. Sir David & Sir Frederick Barclay

Known as the «Barclay Twins», these brothers from London have amassed tremendous wealth in media and hotel properties. Their net worth is $5.6 billion , placing them at #305 on Forbes Billionaire List. In the 1950’s, the pair started flipping houses and turning old boarding houses into hotels. In 1995, they bought the Ritz Hotel in London. Today they hold stakes in shipping, retail, property, and media outlets. In 2000, the brothers were knighted for their support of medical research, which estimates they donated about £45 million to research since 1985. While their permanent home is on small Channel Islands in Britain, the Barclay brothers have kept a flat in Fontvieille for several years.

Interesting fact: Before making their vast wealth, the pair ran a confectioner in Kensington in the 1940’s. Candy Corner was bankrupted by the High Court after their business failed and the landlord seized the property.

3. Christina Green

British businesswoman and owner of Taveta Investments, ranks #422 on Forbes Billionaire List with a net worth of $4.8 billion . Her husband, Sir Philip Green, is the founder and chairman of the retail company Arcadia Group, which includes Topshop, Topman, Wallis, Evans, Burton, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, and Outfit. The BHS department store chain used to be part of the group, until it went out of business. Christina is the sole shareholder of Taveta Investments, the stake holding company of Arcadia. «Tina», as she is known, is a full-time resident of Monaco, while Philip works in London during the week and spends the weekends in the Principality. The couple have two children.

Interesting fact: The Greens recently acquired «Lionheart», a £100 million yacht that has found a comfortable home in Monaco’s port.

4. Steve Wynn

Coming in at a #679 on Forbes Billionaire List, the American businessman has a $3 billion net worth . Wynn created a real estate empire with high-rise resorts and casinos in Las Vegas, Macau and elsewhere. Wynn started with some of the most famous resorts and casinos in Las Vegas, including the Mirage, Bellagio and Wynn. His new style of hotel and casino forever changed the style of Las Vegas. Born Tatiana Santo Domingo , she is a 34-year-old Colombian/Brazilian heiress to her grandfather’s fortune from the sale of his Columbian beer empire, Bavaria. Her net worth is valued at $2.1 billion , placing her at #1103 on Forbes Billionaire List. Tatiana is active in fashion and co-founded Muzungu Sisters, an ethical retail company that sells fair-trade, artisan made fashion. She is also the wife of Prince Andrea Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline and fourth in line to the Monaco throne.

Interesting fact: Tatiana met Andrea while attending boarding school in Fontainebleau near Paris. They have two sons and a daughter. Their third child, Maximillian Rainier, was born in April, 2018.

7. David & Ezra Nahmad

Another set of billionaire brothers for the Principality with a combined net worth $3.3 billion . David, 71, is listed at #1284 on Forbes Billionaire List worth around $1.8 billion, and Ezra, 73, at #1561 worth $1.5 billion. These two Syrian art dealers have «stockpiled» one of the largest collections of blue chip paintings, including Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Mark Rothko and more. They have 300 Picassos valued at $3 billion alone. Originally from Syria, the family moved to Lebanon in the 1940s after anti-Semitic unrest in the country. From there the family moved to Milan, where the brothers discovered art trading. Today the brothers are considered the largest buying force in the art world.

Interesting fact: David is an avid player of Backgammon and was the 1996 Backgammon World Champion.

8. Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou

The 51-year-old Cypriot «serial entrepreneur,» as he refers to himself, started EasyJet Airlines and the easy brand. He ranks #1477 on Forbes Billionaire List, with $1.62 billion of net worth . Stelios is the son of a Cypriot shipping magnate, who loaned him £5 million to start the airline venture in 1995. Today easyGroup, headquartered in London, includes easyCar, easyHotel, easyBus and more.

9. Mohamed Al-Fayed

Tied with #8 for a net worth of $1.62 billion , the 89-year-old Egyptian businessman made his money in the UK as the sole owner of Harrods department store. He sold Harrods to Qatar in 2010 for £2.4 billion, but still owns the Ritz Hotel in Paris and 75 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. He also owned Fulham club, which he sold for $300 million in 2103. Al-Fayed has lived in Monaco for decades, being a part of glamour days of Hollywood stars and the marriage of Prince Rainier III to Grace Kelly .

Interesting fact: For a long time, the Sokar yacht where Mohamed’s son, Dodi, proposed marriage to Princess Diana was the first in the ranking of the «coolest» megayachts. On this magnificent ship Dodi and Diana spent their last summer vacation.

Later, the yacht became a target for the paparazzis and the «yellow press». Mohamed Al-Fayed practically ceased to use it and sold it to his colleague in oil business for $35 million. However, one can see the Sokar yacht in Monaco from time to time.

11. Michele Ferrero

The famous Italian entrepreneur originally from Dogliani – Michele Ferrero – known for his sweet empire Ferrero, also couldn’t resist that particular charm of the Principality and moved here.

One of Italy’s richest businessmen took over the board of his father Pietro Ferrero’s successful pastry company in 1957 and it has been difficult to compete with its authority on the market ever since. It was he who initiated the launch of the everybody’s favorite Nutella chocolate paste. Today, Ferrero Group includes such brands as Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, Tic Tac, Rafaello, Kinder and Mon Chéri.

In 2015, Michele had passed away in the Princess Grace hospital in Monaco at the age of 89. Prince Albert II himself was present at the burial ceremony.

Billionaires are getting ready for summer with wildly spectacular superyachts.

• Superyachts, the most expensive asset  a billionaire can own, are pushing the boundaries of luxury.
• The boats, which cost eight or nine figures, are getting larger and include more features than ever.
• From massage rooms to basketball courts, here's what the world's richest want on board.

For many wealthy boat owners, a private spa is a must-have on board. A sauna is a nice touch. A Jet Ski or two makes days at sea way more fun. And if you don't have someone on board who can whip up a Michelin-star-worthy meal , you might as well stay on land.

In the world of massive yachts , there's no such thing as too much. After all, if someone spends eight or nine figures to design the vessel of their dreams — or at least $500,000 a week to charter one — more is more.

"Yachting. It's not rational; it's emotional," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, where dozens of superyachts — often defined as vessels over 30 meters in length — were on display.

And while there are certain classic features, such as jacuzzis and bars, what superyacht owners want is evolving, insiders at the show said. That might mean more crew members, more space for helicopters, or more water toys, but might also include manicure salons and putting greens.

"The bar of what is the baseline expectation has increased exponentially just over the last four or five years," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. Clients are "spending more time on the boat and really wanting to extend the lifestyle they lead on the shore."

A lot of this can be chalked up to the pandemic. Superyacht purchases and charters spiked as life and luxury travel on land screeched to a halt. While the market has moderated slightly, the number of superyachts on order — 1,166 as of September, according to Boat International's Global Order Book — is still above pre-pandemic norms.

"What the pandemic really showed is that the appetite for being out there at sea, sort of living the marine lifestyle, is still as valid as ever," Kurtén said.

That means there's a lot of money on the water. The total value of the 203 superyachts over 30 meters delivered last year was $6.4 billion, according to data from SuperYacht Times. New custom builds from the world's most prestigious shipyards — Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco , Benetti — can run into the hundreds of millions. Even used superyachts at the Palm Beach show cost as much as $75 million.

And it's not just traditional buyers like retired wealthy couples looking for a place to relax or celebrities looking for a place to party away from the paparazzi. New clients are often younger and have families, so want areas to work and watch movies . They also want pricey water toys, access to fitness equipment, or even pizza ovens for picky eaters.

"This would've never happened in the nineties," said Giovanna Vitelli, the vice president of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts. "You would go with your beautiful woman, Champagne — the idea of yachting was much more showing off with your jacuzzi and things like that."

Pure opulence has made room for function.

"Life on board was considered very formal — big formal dining rooms, boats were high on the water, you would be segregated from the rest of the world," Vitelli said, remembering another client who insisted on a replica of the Sistine Chapel above the dining table.

But the ostentatious, palatial-like interiors that used to be highlighted in yacht brochures have made way for lists of more functional features .

Owners want elevators and luxury gyms. Pampering options, be it a massage room, manicure station, or a professional-grade facial machine, are a dime a dozen. Some bathrooms have fancy Toto toilets, which can cost around $20,000.

Sterns (that's the back of the boat) used to be built high to guard guests' privacy. Now, they're built as "beach clubs" — an open swim platform.

And what good is a massage room if no one on board can give one? Many superyachts can hold twice as many crew members as guests, if not more. One broker, representing a boat that didn't have a masseuse, said it could be quite a "tricky" issue because if a charter wants one, they have to find someone who can massage guests and "pull their weight with the crew."

"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," Kurtén said.

Of course, a crew comes at a cost . Most are considered full-time employees, requiring salaries and benefits like health insurance. Captains, first mates, and chief engineers often make six figures a year. That's without tips; a charter guest will typically spend six figures on gratuities for the crew who worked during a weeklong vacation.

For the superrich, there must be room for toys.

It's not just the onboard amenities that count. What's known as "toys" in the industry — water slides, eFoils, Jet Skis, and underwater scuba diving jets — are popular, and costs range from merely hundreds of dollars (banana boats) to millions ( submersibles , which are still popular despite the recent tragedy).

" Tenders and toys, the sky seems to be the limit," Kurtén said. "More is more."

If you can't fit all those toys in the yacht's storage space, you can just use another boat. Jeff Bezos' support yacht is a superyacht in itself, measuring 75 meters and costing tens of millions of dollars. (His main yacht, Koru , cost a reported $500 million.)

Support yachts are also faster, meaning the crew can get to a destination first and set up the Jet Skis, seapools, and the like, Dazert said. "By the time the owner arrives on the main yacht, everything's set up, and he can go and have fun."

Even tenders, the smaller vessel that brings guests from the ship to the shore, are getting glow-ups. The Nero, a 90-meter beauty available to charter for about $500,000 a week and modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship, has custom-built tenders to match the design. The most expensive ones often cost seven figures. Nero has three.

"It used to be a tender was a tender," Jeffrey Beneville, who handles yacht insurance at NFP, told BI. "Now they're called limousine tenders. Think of an incredibly luxurious gondola that's got a hard top so nobody's hair gets mussed when they're being dropped off at the Monaco Yacht Club ."

One thing that clearly hasn't changed in superyachting: showing off. If the boat next door at the marina has an indoor-outdoor cinema, it's natural to want one too. Ditto a wine cellar or helipad.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Vitelli, whose company is behind the Lana yacht Bill Gates chartered for a birthday party three years ago, said. "You push it a little more."

And that's a boon for yacht makers and brokers catering to the superrich.

"Our job is to make clients' dreams come true," Kurtén said.

Les experts disent que l'industrie des superyachts est en plein effervescence depuis des années, même lors du ralentissement économique mondial causé par la pandémie.

Les chantiers navals ont continué à fabriquer des méga yachts qui, selon les experts, grossissent à mesure qu'ils gagnent en popularité.

Que savons-nous du yacht de Bezos ?

D'une longueur de 127 mètres, le navire est en cours de construction aux Pays-Bas par Oceanco, selon l'agence Bloomberg.

Il est estimé à environ 500 millions de dollars, une goutte dans l'océan pour l'homme le plus riche du monde, dont la richesse a bondi de 13 milliards de dollars en une seule journée en 2020 . Sa valeur nette estimée s'élève maintenant à près de 200 milliards de dollars.

Le yacht principal disposera de plusieurs niveaux, il comptera trois mats et un héliport.

Il n'y a pas de définition officielle d'un superyacht (par rapport à un yacht ordinaire), mais dans l'industrie, le terme se réfère généralement à un yacht de plus de 74 pieds de long.

Certains contestent cette définition, affirmant que le terme superyachts s'applique aux navires de plus de 200 pieds de long. Certains courtiers ont même adopté le terme 'gigayacht' pour désigner les navires de plus de 300 pieds.

"C'est un peu du marketing", déclare Bill Springer, qui écrit sur l'industrie du yachting pour le magazine Forbes.

Le yacht de Bezos, qui fait plus de 400 pieds, est presque aussi grand que la grande pyramide de Gizeh (si le navire était disposé verticalement). C'est un peu moins de la moitié de la longueur de la tour Eiffel.

Comment va l'industrie du yacht ?

L'industrie a connu une croissance rapide au cours des 20 dernières années .

Selon la National Marine Manufacturers Association des États-Unis, les ventes de bateaux ont atteint en 2020un sommet sur 13 ans, reflétant la façon dont les gens se sont tournés

"Le marché est en plein essor", déclare Sam Tucker, responsable de la recherche sur les superyachts à la société de veille commerciale VesselsValue. "Il y a eu un nombre record de transactions effectuées, et cette tendance se maintient même jusqu'à présent."

Le marché des yachts d'occasion a également "juste été fou", dit-il. " Le marché est tout simplement brûlant. "

Selon Tucker, il y a 9 357 yachts de plus de 65 pieds de long qui sont actuellement en mer - c'est-à-dire ceux qui n'ont pas coulé ou qui sont entretenus à terre.

Environ 85 % d'entre eux sont motorisés et 15 % sont des voiliers comme celui que Bezos a commandé.

Moins de yachts ont été affrétés en 2020, dit Tucker, ce qu'il attribue aux restrictions de voyage pandémiques empêchant les activités touristiques normales.

Les ventes ont d'abord chuté pendant quelques semaines l'année dernière, puis elles ont immédiatement explosé .

La société de Denison a vendu 1008 navires en 2020, soit une utilisation de 35 % par rapport à l'année précédente. Il est actuellement sur la bonne voie pour voir une autre augmentation de 30 % en 2021 .

Environ 65 de ceux qu'il a vendus en 2020 étaient des superyachts. Jusqu'à présent cette année, environ 40 superyachts ont été vendus, ce qui signifie qu'environ 2,2 superyachts ont été vendus par sa société par semaine depuis janvier.

La demande a totalement dépassé l'offre, déclare son collègue Ben Farnborough, qui ajoute qu'il est de plus en plus difficile de trouver des bateaux d'occasion à vendre.

Qui achète un superyacht ?

Les navires sont souvent achetés par des sociétés et sont ensuite loués par le propriétaire de la société, ce qui rend difficile de dire avec certitude quels yachts appartiennent à qui.

Dans les célèbres ports de construction navale, comme celui des Pays-Bas où se trouve Oceanco, les amateurs tenteront de repérer les numéros de queue des avions privés afin de déterminer quels milliardaires sont venus visiter leur futur yacht.

La vie privée est tout l'intérêt de posséder un yacht, dit Tucker, qui l'appelle une "industrie opaque". Mark Zuckerberg et Bill Gates, collègues milliardaires de la technologie, auraient des yachts.

Pourquoi sont-ils si chers ?

Les yachts offrent 'une véritable exclusivité', dit Springer, qui les compare à une île privée ou à la construction d'une ville personnalisée.

Ils deviennent aussi plus confortables et vont dans des endroits au-delà des "ports glamour classiques" comme Monaco, dit Springer. Les gens les emmènent maintenant dans des endroits plus exotiques et éloignés, tels que l'Antarctique et la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, car les propriétaires constatent qu'ils sont plus que de simples symboles de statut.

Les meilleurs superyachts sont fabriqués sur mesure, les artisans du monde entier s'occupant de chaque détail pour les goûts des plus riches et des plus élitistes du monde.

Leur construction peut prendre des années. Un yacht de la taille de Bezos impliquait probablement environ 400 ouvriers et designers, estime Farnborough. Une fois terminé, il aura probablement besoin d'environ 60 personnes pour l'équiper.

Les coûts d'exploitation annuels représentent environ 10 % du prix d'achat, explique Tucker de VesselsValue. Bezos a acheté le journal Washington Post en 2013 pour seulement 250 millions de dollars, soit environ la moitié du coût de son nouveau superyacht.

Un tableau de l'artiste Jean-Michel Basquiat est actuellement en vente aux enchères à New York pour une estimation de 145 millions de dollars. Il y a aussi un tableau de Claude Monet pour environ 350 millions de dollars.

Virgin Galactic a pré-vendu des billets dans l'espace pour entre 200 000 $ et 250 000 $ ces dernières années alors qu'ils se préparent à leur premier lancement commercial.

Les super-riches font décoller le marché des superyachts

La crise du covid n'a pas freiné l'arrivée de nouveaux milliardaires dans le monde. Au contraire. Des super-riches qui jettent à nouveau leur dévolu sur les superyachts de luxe.

Ce marché connaît en effet une dynamique quasi sans précédent selon le concessionnaire Fraser Yachts, cité par Reuters: "l'année 2021 est nettement plus performante que n'importe laquelle des 12 dernières années", indique-t-il.

200 nouveaux superyachts cette année

Les ventes de navires de luxe de plus de 30 mètres dont le prix peut atteindre jusqu'à 600 millions de dollars ont ainsi progressé de plus de 8% au cours des neuf premiers mois de 2021 par rapport à la même période de 2019, selon le site spécialisé Superyacht Group également cité par l'agence de presse.

Plus de 200 nouveaux superyachts ont touché l'eau pour la première fois au cours des neuf premiers mois de 2021, contre 165 pour la même période de 2019.

Les industriels spécialisés se frottent les mains. L'italien Ferretti fait état d'un carnet de commandes supérieur à 900 millions d'euros entre janvier et septembre, bien au-dessus des 691 millions d'euros enregistrés en 2019.

Toujours en Italie, Azimut Benetti a vu ses ventes tripler par rapport à 2020 pour atteindre 1,2 milliard d'euros en août, soutenu par la demande des clients américains.

Le dernier caprice de Jeff Bezos mesure 127 mètres de long et ne passe pas sous certains ponts. Mais son empire, dont l’action a chuté de 50 % en 2022, licencie à tour de bras et le fondateur d'Amazon sera peut-être contraint de revenir à la barre pour des aventures moins maritimes

Les milliardaires aussi ont leurs soucis. Jeff Bezos avait beau avoir ses habitudes sur le yacht le plus cher du monde à la location – 4 millions de dollars par semaine pour le « Flying Fox » –, une fois la croisière terminée, il devait se résoudre à faire ses valises sans même ­pouvoir laisser à bord pantoufles et brosse à dents jusqu’à l’été suivant… Insupportables contraintes.

Voilà peut-être pourquoi l’ancien directeur exécutif d’Amazon (titre abandonné en 2021) s’est décidé à devenir propriétaire. Dans le plus grand secret, il a commandé « Y721 » aux chantiers néerlandais Oceanco.

Le bébé est un géant de 127 mètres qui vient d’effectuer sa ­première sortie en mer. Comme il est de tradition pour les super-yachts des super-riches, on en sait peu sur ses ­caractéristiques, le constructeur préférant laisser à l’acquéreur le choix de ses petits secrets. On sait toutefois que « Y721 » a vite été rebaptisé « Koru », soit « Nouveau départ » en maori. Une information à ­rapprocher de l’année de la commande, 2018. Une date qui compte dans l’histoire de l’empereur de la livraison (entre autres), car elle est celle de son divorce retentissant. À chacun son lot de consolation : Margaret MacKenzie Scott a reçu la somme de 38 milliards de dollars et Jeff Bezos, le plus beau bateau du monde.

Le choix du constructeur naval n’est pas anodin. Les transporteurs ­d’Amazon ont beau relâcher quotidiennement des milliers de tonnes de CO2, leur patron ­sillonner la planète à bord de son Gulfstream G650-ER personnel, sa fusée « New Shepard » (appartenant à sa société Blue Origin) émettre 93 tonnes de CO2 à chaque décollage, Bezos montre qu’il a ainsi le souci de ­l’environnement… Pas question pour lui d’intégrer la flotte des 300 méga-yachts accusés d’émettre autant de dioxyde de ­carbone qu’un pays tout entier. D’où le choix du constructeur Oceanco, spécialiste d’une nouvelle génération de yachts dits « diesel-électrique hybrides » nécessitant peu voire aucune énergie fossile.

De ces chantiers est déjà sorti le célèbre « Black Pearl », dont la propulsion énergétique est produite par une combinaison alliant le solaire, l’hydrique et le vent. Le « Koru » est inspiré de son design. Lui aussi est doté de 3 mâts rotatifs immenses (70 mètres de haut !) qui lui permettront de traverser l’Atlantique sans guère de carburant. Selon Fernando Nicholson, un courtier très au fait du marché des super-yachts, le « “Koru” est un bateau qui allie design révolutionnaire et technologies de pointe. Lorsque celles-ci seront plus abordables, tous les autres super-yachts pourront s’en inspirer. Mais, à l’heure actuelle, seul un homme ayant la fortune de Bezos peut se le permettre. » En effet, la ­facture est estimée à 500 millions de dollars. Auxquels il faudra ajouter les frais de fonctionnement annuels : au minimum 10 % du prix, soit 50 millions de dollars. Sans parler du désormais indispensable navire de soutien.

Évidemment, le « Koru » possède aussi sa piste d’hélicoptère

Celui-là est un « offshore support ­vessel (littéralement : vaisseau de soutien au large), soit OSV. Une « modeste » annexe de 75 mètres, capable de transporter 45 membres d’équipage, ­sortie d’un autre chantier (Damen Yachting) et baptisée « Abeona » (du nom de la déesse romaine veillant sur les voyageurs). Car c’est l’usage chez les méga-riches. Non seulement ils cumulent les jouets en tous genres (Jet-Ski, sous-­marins, kitesurfs, toboggans aquatiques, Flyboard, équipements de plongée, etc) mais aussi les amis, ­candidats au partage des vacances. Donc, un seul navire, si grand soit-il, ne peut ­plus suffire.

Imaginez l’organisation d’une fiesta sur une plage idyllique et isolée. Pour ­préparer les festivités, accueillir les invités, puis tout ranger, il faut bien mettre le ­personnel quelque part. De même, comment faire la sieste quand les amis débarquent par ­opérations héliportées ? Il est donc prévu qu’ils puissent atterrir plus loin, sur l’annexe, alors qu’un ravissant tender en teck verni, éclatant sous le soleil, sera chargé de l’ultime transfert. Évidemment, le « Koru » possède aussi sa piste d’hélicoptère. Gageons que celle-ci sera réservée à Lauren Sanchez, la compagne de Jeff Bezos, une pilote ­professionnelle.

Même si cela paraît étonnant, disposer d’un second navire dont le prix est estimé à quelque 100 millions de dollars est tout à fait rentable. Car il apporte une surface ­supplémentaire qui coûterait bien plus cher s’il fallait l’ajouter à celle du bateau mère. Et puis qu’est-ce que 600 millions de ­dollars (et probablement davantage si on compte les aménagements intérieurs ­personnalisés) pour Jeff Bezos dont la ­fortune de 114 milliards de dollars (près de deux fois le budget de l’Éducation nationale en France) le classe à la troisième place des grandes fortunes mondiales, juste ­derrière Elon Musk et Bernard Arnault. Pas si mal quand on sait qu’il a perdu 100 milliards de dollars depuis août 2022. Et dans cette division d’ultra milliardaires, existe-t-il plus grande humiliation qu’avoir été premier pour se traîner à la troisième place ? Sans doute pas.

Bezos s’est enfin engagé à faire don de sa fortune de son vivant

Avec ce nouveau yacht dont parle le monde entier, l’ego de Bezos est regonflé. En outre, il peut toujours s’enorgueillir de battre à plate couture ses concurrents sur le podium de la richesse en termes d’immobilier. Classé vingt-­cinquième propriétaire foncier des États-Unis, il possède une résidence de 1 200 mètres carrés à Beverly Hills, une non moins immense demeure dans la banlieue huppée de ­Seattle, ainsi que quatre appartements dans la tour ­Century, donnant sur Central Park à New York, et une sorte de palais de 2 500 mètres carrés à ­Washington DC, mais aussi un énorme ranch au Texas, un domaine à Hawaii de 5 hectares et quelques terres ici et là, pour atteindre un patrimoine de quatorze propriétés dont la valeur cumulée est équivalente à deux nouveaux yachts : 600 millions de dollars.

­La très mauvaise nouvelle pour ses quatre enfants (trois fils et une fille adoptée en Chine), c’est que Bezos s’est enfin engagé à faire don de sa fortune de son vivant. Pour respecter l’esprit des pionniers, qui veut que chaque génération fasse ses preuves, le milliardaire, longtemps critiqué pour avoir refusé de signer le « Giving Pledge », cette promesse de léguer la moitié de sa ­fortune à de bonnes œuvres, a enfin franchi le ­Rubicon du cœur. Il a compris que l’altruisme était dans l’air du temps. Mais on ne sait pas s’il inclut dans sa fortune ses ­maisons, son avion et son nouveau yacht.

Il y a une macabre ironie dans la disparition de Mike Lynch, présumé mort après le naufrage de son yacht dans la nuit du 18 au 19 août au large de la Sicile. L’entrepreneur britannique avait organisé cette croisière avec des proches pour fêter son acquittement, en juin dernier, dans un bras de fer judiciaire qui l’opposait à HP depuis une dizaine d’années. Le géant de l’informatique américain avait acquis en 2011, pour 11 milliards de dollars, Autonomy, l’éditeur de logiciels fondé quinze ans plus tôt par Mike Lynch. Avant d’accuser ce dernier d’avoir falsifié ses comptes afin d’obtenir un prix de vente plus élevé.

Autonomy a été une success-story anglaise, devenue la plus grande société informatique du royaume. Spécialisée dans la recherche et l’organisation de données complexes comme les e-mails, les appels téléphoniques et les vidéos, l’entreprise avait été créée sur la base des recherches de Mike Lynch à l’Université de Cambridge.

Sicile: le corps de Mike Lynch récupéré dans l'épave du super-yacht

Les plongeurs ont récupéré jeudi le corps du magnat britannique de la tech Mike Lynch dans l'épave du yacht qui a fait naufrage lundi en Sicile, et poursuivaient les recherches pour retrouver sa fille.

Au total, trois hommes et trois femmes étaient portés disparus depuis lundi matin et le naufrage du "Bayesian" au large de Porticello, près de Palerme. Il ne reste plus désormais dans l'épave que le corps d'une femme, cinq dépouilles ayant été remontées depuis mercredi, selon les gardes-côtes.

Ces cinq dépouilles portent le bilan provisoire à six morts, un membre de l'équipage ayant été retrouvé décédé lundi.

Une source proche de l'enquête avait indiqué que les corps de Mike Lynch et de sa fille de 18 ans, Hannah, ne faisaient pas partie des quatre premiers récupérés mercredi. La dernière victime dans l'épave, une femme, devrait donc être Hannah.

Mike Lynch, un richissime homme d'affaires surnommé le "Bill Gates britannique", fêtait avec ses amis, collaborateurs et avocats, sa relaxe en juin dans un procès pour fraude aux Etats-Unis qui aurait pu lui coûter des années de prison.

Outre le milliardaire et sa fille, les quatre autres personnes qui manquaient à l'appel depuis lundi étaient Jonathan Bloomer, le président du conseil d'administration de Morgan Stanley International - une branche de la banque américaine - et de l'assureur Hiscox, ainsi que son épouse, et Chris Morvillo, un avocat qui a défendu Mike Lynch dans son procès aux Etats-Unis, avec son épouse.

Jonathan Bloomer et sa femme Judy "étaient des personnes incroyables et une source d'inspiration pour beaucoup, mais avant tout, ils se concentraient sur leur famille et l'aimaient", a déclaré jeudi leur famille dans un communiqué.

"Ensemble pendant cinq décennies, notre seul réconfort est qu'ils sont toujours ensemble aujourd'hui", a conclu la famille.

Le navire a sombré en quelques minutes lundi à l'aube après le passage d'une tornade. Quinze personnes ont été sauvées, dont six passagers.

Jeudi, un caisson hyperbare, pour la décompression, a été installé dans le port.

"Je pense que le caisson hyperbare a été mis en place par précaution, car les plongeurs qui fouillent le yacht descendent à une grande profondeur", a déclaré à l'AFP Matthew Schanck, du Conseil de recherche et de sauvetage maritime (Maritime Search and Rescue Council).

- "Longue série d'erreurs" -

Les premiers témoins ont raconté que le mât de 75 mètres s'était rompu, mais les informations disponibles mercredi semblaient indiquer que ce n'est pas le cas.

La vitesse à laquelle le yacht a coulé et le fait que les autres bateaux autour de lui n'aient pas été touchés soulèvent des questions, notamment celle de savoir si la quille lestée, qui fait contrepoids à l'imposant mât, était abaissée ou relevée au moment de la tempête.

Le patron du groupe naval The italian sea group, propriétaire du chantier naval Perini Navi qui a construit le Bayesian, ne décolère pas et pointe du doigt l'erreur humaine.

"Tout ce qui s'est passé révèle une longue série d'erreurs. Les passagers ne devaient pas être dans les cabines, le navire ne devait pas être à l'ancre" dans ces conditions météo, a déclaré Giovanni Costantino dans une interview jeudi au Corriere della Sera.

"Il est d'usage, lorsque le navire est à l'ancre, d'avoir un garde sur le pont et, s'il était là, il n'aurait pas pu ne pas voir la tempête arriver", poursuit M. Costantino.

"Au lieu de cela, il (le yacht, ndlr) a pris l'eau alors que les invités étaient encore dans leurs cabines. Un angle de 40 degrés suffit pour que ceux qui se trouvent dans une cabine se retrouvent avec la porte au-dessus d'eux : pouvez-vous imaginer un homme de 60 à 70 ans grimper pour sortir?", s'interroge le patron du constructeur naval.

"Ils sont tombés dans un piège, ces pauvres gens ont fini comme des souris", a conclu M. Costantino.
