Superyacht with 66-metre support yacht spotted off Victoria
A pair of multimillion-dollar yachts sailed past Victoria on Monday, both owned by billionaire brothers who made the bulk of their fortunes as owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The 87-metre yacht Lonian was trailed by its 66-metre support yacht Hodor, described by Boat International magazine as "the world's largest floating toy box."
While the Lonian can accommodate 12 guests, 27 crew and a helicopter of its own, the catamaran-style support ship acts as a kind of floating garage, carrying speedboats, jet skis, motorcycles and ATVs.
"The idea was to get all the clutter off the mothership and on board a dedicated vessel," the Hodor's first officer told the magazine last year.
"There was no need to restrict the quantity of toys we put on board. The owner just let us go ahead and fill it with cool stuff."
The Hodor's designer, Incat Crowther, says the support ship "accommodates an astounding number of toys, facilities and personnel," which includes a submarine garage and a scuba-diving platform complete with onboard air compressors and "a hospital with decompression chamber."
According to financial transparency website OpenCorporates , the vessels are owned by a pair of holding companies controlled by Fertitta Enterprises, the family company of Lorenzo Fertitta and brother Frank Fertitta III.
According to Forbes magazine, the casino-magnate brothers bought the UFC for US$2 million in 2001 and sold it in 2016 for US$4 billion, while retaining stakes in the company which sold in 2017 at a US$5-billion valuation.
Vessel-tracking website marinetraffic.com indicates the yachts were en route to Vancouver from Seattle.

B.C. welcomes high rollers: A peek into the world of superyacht tourism
- Share by Email
Greg Norris walks along the docks at Victoria International Marina on a sunny Friday afternoon, fielding phone calls and making sure everything is flowing well.
On any given day, the marina welcomes many yachts that choose to stop in B.C.’s capital. Most recently, a US$35-million sailing yacht by the name of Athos docked. On July 14, crew members could be seen getting the 62-metre long vessel ready for its next sailing.
Athos isn’t the only superyacht to enter B.C. waters; not far away off Cattle Point is a $100-million superyacht called Anawa. The Anawa is owned by a Brazilian billionaire and has been near Victoria since May 2023.
Over on the mainland, a $200-million vessel called Attessa V (AV) has been drawing attention in North Vancouver . Dennis Washington is listed as owning AV and his network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.
For Norris, the CEO of Victoria International Marine, B.C. is starting to put itself on the map when it comes to attracting superyachts. For a long time, many international travellers would bypass the province altogether and head for Alaska, he says.
“Those yachts down in San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle and Tacoma that used to come up and just bypass us because they didn't know there was anything to do and now they're turning in and stopping and spending some time,” says Norris.
Superyacht owners are spending locally
As part of his job, Norris spends time arranging for superyacht owners to visit Victoria businesses. That includes connecting them with local jewellers.
“When they are visiting here, they're looking to spend money on art, and in the community, on all kinds of things: food and real estate and buying from retailers,” explains Norris. “They're just like any one of us: they go into a store, they like something, they buy it. It's just that they might buy a lot more.”
Sometimes superyacht owners will fly their friends in, and will put them up in nearby hotels, he adds. Crew members will often stay in hotels, too.
"They're all spending [money] locally.”
Unfriendly Canadians?
However, Canadians’ friendly demeanour and politeness appear to not have transferred to the superyacht community, Norris tells Glacier Media.
During his time marketing B.C. internationally, he says that specific boating community has been ‘grumpy’ towards him after learning he’s from Victoria.
"They basically said B.C. and Victoria, in particular, is one of the most unfriendly boating places in the world that they've seen,” said Norris. "I would say barring pirates."
He questions if the animosity is because the public does not get to interact or be ‘welcomed into the community’ of superyachting.
“They don't get a chance to meet these people and see them so they don't know who they are,” he says. "It’s this mystery."
The public can come down to the dock and walk around to see the boats, something Norris welcomes.
‘Exciting way to see the world’
According to Norris, the superyacht industry creates job opportunities for young people.
He tells Glacier Media that the marina has a high staff turnover as employees end up working on the bigger yachts.
“We're open to it. We don't think that that's a bad thing if they come on, and that's their career,” he says. “If they're hard-working, the yachts pick them up. There’s not a lot of them being trained in the region purposefully for that."
Norris adds yachting is an exciting way to see the world.
“You come down, you work here for a little bit and you have a really good chance of getting on one of those boats and just seeing stuff you would never see.”
The marina, he says, is actively hiring and looking for people interested in the marine industry.
Superyacht repairs being done in B.C. shipyards
Superyachts need an incredible amount of work to keep them running, and much of that work is being done locally when they arrive, says the CEO.
"There are well over 100 industries that it touches: everything from fuel, to ship repair to almost anything you would have in a house you would have in a yacht,” says Norris.
He believes more yachts will start coming to Victoria and having their work done in the shipyard.

05 Nov $33,000,000 Superyacht Docks In Victoria
I was walking across the Johnson St Bridge the other day and as I always do, glanced over the harbour to take in the view. Immediately my eye caught the strangely yet enticing yacht parked just outside of the inner harbour here in Victoria . It looked majestic sitting there with the Fairmont Empress towering over it, as well no other yacht in the harbour looked as special. Sadly the dock they pulled up to is not accessible so I couldn’t get better photos but I made do with my iPhone and Instagram for now.
This boat has been spotted a few times here in BC and was in Vancouver over a week ago. This $33,000,000 superyacht was built by Wally and is considered to be the fastest superyacht in the world. That in part is due to its design, but mostly because of the three gas turbine engines that spit out over 17,000 HP….that’s absolutely nuts and I love it!
The design of this yacht is definitely unique and it either gets trashed or loved, I personally like the unique styling. The interior however isn’t all cloak and dagger, rather it has all the creature comforts of home with an extremely modern look and feel. The owner of this boat is still a mystery although it has been seen up for sale via the yacht brokerage Edminston as of late.
If the owner of the boat see’s this post and is still in Victoria, and would let me on to take a few photos, then please do contact me. I would die a happy man…

Humongous $200M superyacht arrives in Vancouver
- Share by Email

A 95-metre superyacht priced at $200 million was spotted cruising through False Creek before docking in North Vancouver.
Attessa V Yacht was built in 2010 by Blohm and Voss, a German shipbuilding and engineering company. It arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday and moved over to a dock in North Vancouver on Wednesday morning.
AV can entertain 24 guests in 12 rooms and has a crew of 33 people. It features a large swimming pool on the deck, a private movie theatre and a jet pool jacuzzi.
The superyacht was designed by Michael Leach Design and soars in ’speed and style.’
It costs $10 to $20 million per year to run the yacht.
Website SuperYacht.com lists the owner of the AV as Dennis Washington, an 88-year-old American billionaire whose net worth is listed at US$6.4 billion and is ranked number 397 in Forbes' richest people in the world .
Washington, from Montana, claims to be ‘self-made’ and owns a copper mining, marine transportation and heavy equipment business, according to Forbes. He is married with two children. In an interview with Forbes.com, Washington said his passion is boats.
Washington’s network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.
The AV Yacht was previously known as Palladium and is listed as an award-winning superyacht. It was previously owned by Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian oligarch and previous owner of the Brooklyn Nets. The yacht drew attention when The Late Show host Stephen Colbert visited Prokhorov on the yacht.
Superyachts flocking to Vancouver Island
Superyachts flock to B.C. every year. One recently drew attention in B.C.’s capital when a Brazilian billionaire docked in Victoria.
The 62-metre-long vessel called the Anawa was docked at Ship Point on May 30, clad with its own helicopter on deck.
Billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann owns the yacht, according to Superfanyacht.com. Forbes.com says the investor-philanthropist lives in Switzerland and is worth $14.8 billion.
Anawa was custom-designed and built in 2020 by Damen Yachting. It’s one of the company’s SeaXplorer class of vessels, billed as “long-range, luxury expedition” yachts.
It can carry 12 guests and 15 crew plus a captain, Damen said.
Back in 2020, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones's yacht was spotted in the waters off Vancouver Island . The "Bravo Eugenia" is worth an estimated quarter-billion dollars.
The superyacht is designed to use 30 per cent less fuel than other vessels of its size and class but it doesn't skimp on amenities. The "Bravo Eugenia" can accommodate 14 guests and 30 crew members and features six guest suites, a beach lounge, spa and gym.
On Tuesday, the AV Yacht wasn’t the only yacht drawing attention. A 32-metre vessel called the Snowbored was passing through False Creek with the final destination of Galiano Island.
The Snowbored, built by Westport in 2003, is a 32-metre vessel with a satin cherry wood interior, and a sundeck sporting a hot tub, wet bar, and lounge pads. It also has a fighting chair and rocket launcher for sport fishing, and can launch a Novurania tender and Yamaha waverunners.
In a statement to Glacier Media, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says anyone wishing to view the Attessa V in Vancouver's inner harbour area by boat "is urged to ensure they do so from a safe distance." "We love seeing boaters and paddlers out enjoying the waters that make up the Port of Vancouver," says Jason Krott, manager of marine operations and fleet. "Our focus is working with all users to build the awareness and understanding needed to support a safe shared space for recreational and commercial traffic."

The largest superyacht of its kind was spotted in BC (PHOTOS/VIDEO)
Another day and another superyacht appears in the wild waters of BC, but this beast of a vessel is the largest of its kind.
The superyacht in question, named the M5, was spotted along Vancouver Island, with some video footage showing the vessel travelling along Pender Island.
It’s the largest single-masted sailing yacht in the world according to Boat International.

The superyacht — which according to Boat International is owned by a Texan named Rod Lewis, who works in the oil business — was recently parked at Mill Bay Marina which is located in Mill Bay, BC, approximately an hour away from Victoria.

Boat International did a deep dive on the M5 a couple of years ago, and we’re glad they did, because this ship is absolutely bonkers.

The Billionaires Club believes that the yacht is worth an estimated US$50 million .
You could practically fit a Vancouver-sized apartment inside one of the lounges on the M5. It’s a sight to behold from the exterior, made evident by this Aquatic BC video.

Boat International notes that the M5 is one of only two sailing yachts in the 70- to 80-metre size range. The ship can actually accommodate 12 guests in seven staterooms.
While it’s not as large as the 100-metre, $250 million superyacht spotted in North Vancouver in June , the M5 certainly has its own flair, charm, and purpose.

Victoria’s First Super Yacht Marina Taking Shape
VICTORIA – What’s going to be taking shape in Victoria’s Inner Harbour in the next few months is so much more than a marina and a pair of mid-sized office buildings. What’s actually taking shape is another key piece of the city’s ongoing effort to become a world-class tourist destination. Decades in the dreaming and designing stage, the $24 million Victoria International Marina will consist of a pair of high end business centres (6,000 square feet each) and a 28 slip marina designed to accommodate yachts of up to 150 feet in length.
“In reality this project was originally conceived more than 30 years ago. Back then Robert Evans purchased 16 acres of the Songhees land from the province and the city, essentially old industrial land on the north side of the Blue Bridge,” explained Craig Norris, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Community Marine Concepts, the owner and developer of the Victoria International Marina project.
“In about 1985 they conceived a plan for the land that included a marina and a bit of a town centre. It has literally taken this long to get shovels into the ground on this project, so we’re very excited to see it finally start to take shape.”
Having faced an epic amount of regulatory roadblocks over the years the project’s current developers (Evans has now left the project) are confident the first yachts will be tying their multi-million dollar hulls to the marina’s slips by next spring. Over time segments of the original property were sold off to other developers, land that today is home primarily to various high rise condominium towers.
In its original form the International Marina would have involved 52 slips, a scale of project that failed to receive City Hall approval. The re-imagined and redesigned concept involves two buildings with a total of just over 12,000 square feet of rentable space and a pared down 28 slip marina. “The slips will range in size from 65 feet to 150 feet, the reason being that under our Transport Canada permit we’re only allowed to bring vessels larger than 65 feet across the harbor runway,” Norris explained.
“We’d gladly take smaller boats but we can’t. We’ve essentially been forced to use the over 65 foot boats as our market as that’s what the marina was built to accommodate and service.”
Currently under construction at Blue Water Systems Limited’s facility in Delta the marina slips will be towed into place in stages and should be installed over the summer months. Prior to the beginning of the construction phase of the project some 23,000 cubic meters of material were dredged from the seafloor to facilitate the transformation of an industrial site into a world class moorage.
“This is a prime location in the middle of Victoria harbor so we expect to see a mixture of local yachts and transient vessels make use of the facility. We don’t want to become a boat parking lot. We expect it to be used by vessels that come and go,” he said.
Concerning the land based elements of the project major construction of the two buildings is expected to begin this summer. Geotechnical testing for the outer breakwater was completed in early July, so development of the marina portion can also now commence. Final construction of the project is scheduled for March 31, 2017. The east building is already fully leased out, including with an as yet unnamed local restaurant, while tenants for the west building are currently being sought.
For Norris the International Marina will be yet another world class tourist destination for visitors, much like the Bear Mountain Golf Course and Butchart Gardens. For him projects of this caliber elevate the entire city’s status as a destination and help to put the Greater Victoria area more solidly on the world’s stage.
“We want people to come in and experience Victoria. That’s when they’re coming in and spending money. That’s what brings vibrancy to the city. That’s what brings economic development to the locality, that’s what we want,” Norris said.
“There are a lot of people who want to come here but they don’t know the West Coast. They’ve heard about its beauty but there’s no infrastructure for them. Our purpose statement is all about creating remarkable experiences , that’s what this facility is all about.”

It hadn’t been done before. A reclusive, American sailor sought a naval architect and boat builder to bring his vision to life: a state-of-the-art sailing vessel, with total redundancy in every system, able to travel non-stop between even the most distant points on the globe. Form would follow function. No compromise on quality. Perfect autonomy.
DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION
Sparkman & Stephens Inc. (NY) and Glade Johnson Design rose to the challenge of design and naval architecture. But she was built in the Pacific Northwest. Sovereign Yachts, Seattle, WA, worked closely with the owner to build the ultimate luxury yacht. The keel was laid in 1989. She would launch in Seattle in 1993, built to Yacht Class under the American Bureau of Shipping.
It may have been her exquisite lines. Or perhaps the tasteful wood and leather interior, or her state of the art replication of all on board systems. The solid stainless steel rigging. Advanced vessel monitoring system. 18 winches. Three steering systems. It all added up to international recognition in 1994, with a ‘Best Sail Yacht 23m-36m’ Award from the International Superyacht Society.

THE FIRST YEARS
Her second owner, a Seattle-area tech billionaire, renamed her ‘Christine’ and sailed her for about a decade. Her third owner, a San Francisco-based yachtsman, recreational pilot and opera aficionado, renamed her ‘Tristan’.
She crossed the Atlantic eight times and cruised the Pacific Ocean from New Zealand to Alaska and beyond. She had several refits, including replacement of all three generators and other major system updates.
Bequeathed to a charity foundation in 2015, she was discovered in 2017 in Florida by a Victoria BC-based businessman and yachtsman and sailed through the Panama Canal to return home to the Pacific Northwest.
VENTUROSA’S RETURN
During the pandemic, she caught the attention of a Victoria-based couple; an entrepreneur, experienced pilot and yachtsman and an ecologist; who eventually acquired her.
Having had four previous owners and many captains overseeing maintenance and repair work all around the globe, Tristan was ready for a comprehensive update.
For the first time since her launch, she was under the care of live-aboard owners, who initiated a systematic refit. Since 2021, the owner-captain has personally attended to all work and has updated her with state of the art technology and systems and undertaken exhaustive maintenance and repair.
Following two haul-outs, hundreds of new parts and thousands of man hours of labour, she was renamed ‘Venturosa’ under Canadian registration in 2023. During the last four years, Venturosa has extensively cruised BC’s magnificent Pacific coast under the hand of her owner captain and his partner. Scroll down for photos of her recent voyages.
