World Premiere at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

(New Gretna, New Jersey, Summer 2021)— Driven by our mantra to build a better boat every day, Viking’s commitment to develop fresh new models continues to be a primary reason for our industry-leading position. On the heels of the award-winning 54 Convertible, Viking is proud to announce the all-new 64 Convertible, the second-generation of this model that will make its world premiere at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. This four-stateroom, three-head fishing battlewagon is poised to become another best-in-class superstar on the tournament circuit and the new standard in luxury, accommodations and comfort.

“We never stop – it’s that simple,” says President and CEO Pat Healey. “Every new model is an improvement from the last one because we’re a design- and engineering-driven company. We have the best team in the business, and this is what we do – design and build incredible boats.”

The 54 Convertible reaffirmed Viking’s dominance in the 50- to 59-foot sportfish yacht market, and the Viking 64 follows suit with its own proclamation of expertise in the 60- to 70-foot genre. In the past 20 years, Viking has come to the market with eight different models (60, 61, 62, 64, 65, 66, 68 and 70), delivering a combined 550 yachts. “It’s a staggering amount of boats,” says Pat. “And the team that designed and engineered all of those Vikings is the same team that designed and engineered our new 64. We’re very proud of that.”

Design/Construction

The 64’s unbroken S-shaped sheer flows gracefully from bow to stern. The swept-back black-masked windshield, pronounced hull and deckhouse feature lines and distinctive hull-side vents give the 64 an unmistakably Viking profile that is recognizable and revered around the world.

The Viking design team is constantly seeking new tools and technologies to build a better boat every day. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, the 64’s running surface has been optimized to achieve the best performance possible. Our in-house CFD allows the team to run numerous virtual sea trials to fine-tune the shape of the hull bottom for increased efficiency.

The hull is built with an engineered composite of fiberglass fabrics and coring that’s vacuum-infused with vinylester resin. Great stiffness and strength is brought to the structure while minimizing weight utilizing a calculated resin-to-fiberglass ratio. The structural bulkheads and fuel tanks (which are customized to the shape of the hull) are also resin infused, and the hull-to-deck is through-bolted every three inches and fiberglassed from inside for a rock-solid union.

Cockpit/Flybridge

The result of thousands of hours on the tournament trail, the 180-square-foot cockpit is clean, streamlined and maximizes freedom of movement, with easy access to storage and service areas. Standard equipment is substantial. Flush rod holders; fresh and raw-water wash down systems; transom fish box with live well, rounded coamings with indirect rope lighting below; side lockers for tag stick and gaff storage; quick disconnect fitting for oil changes for the engines, transmissions and generator; port and starboard in-deck insulated fish and stowage boxes and optional in-deck live well; and stereo speakers are all part of the package. The centerline lazarette hatch (available with power actuation) opens nearly 90 degrees for full viewability and access to the available Seakeeper 26 as well as the steering, trim tabs and drain pumps. An aluminum backing plate is laminated into the cockpit sole for a fighting chair, rocket launcher or table.

The observation mezzanine is designed to keep guests cool and dry thanks to the flybridge overhang, as well as clear of the crew working in the cockpit. For those in warm climates, we offer mezzanine air conditioning. To starboard, freezer and cooler space is provided under the mezzanine seating. A centerline hatch opens with stainless steel gas pistons for excellent access to the engineroom. The port side holds more cooler storage and a tackle cabinet with drawers.

Salon/Galley

With a push of a button, the electric-powered salon door slides open, revealing the 64’s spacious salon. Like its two most recent predecessors, the Viking 54 and 58, our new convertible features an open layout with a walkway that extends in a straight line from the salon all the way to the forepeak, heightening the sense of depth and space.

The interior features horizontal natural walnut throughout, available in a hi-gloss or satin finish. The joinery work is phenomenal, with all cabinetry built in-house. The electrical distribution panel is immediately to port in a dedicated cabinet. Just forward is a 50-inch pop-up HD TV, which is the centerpiece of the home theater center on the port side. The starboard-side L-shaped lounge (with storage underneath) provides plenty of room to stretch out and take a nap, or gather with the crew or family to watch a game or movie. There’s also a convenient walnut cocktail table so everyone has place for their drink.

The port-side dinette comfortably seats four adults. It sits on a raised platform that provides rod storage underneath while also enhancing the view out the tinted salon windows. The dinette faces the feature-packed starboard-side galley with walnut cabinetry, custom Amtico flooring and engineered stone counters (with an overhang that creates a bar area with two stools). Under-counter Sub-Zero refrigerator (2) and freezer (1) units with deep pull-out drawers, walnut cabinetry, a four-burner cooktop and a microwave/convection oven are just a few of the galley’s standard amenities.

Overnight Accommodations

Like the salon, the port-side companionway and four staterooms feature premium carpeting, air conditioning and LED lighting. The companionway is home to a convenient washer and dryer behind a walnut door. The master and forward staterooms each feature queen-size walk-around berths with custom inner-spring mattresses with ample storage underneath, HD TVs and ensuite heads. A crossover berth arrangement is also available in the forward cabin as an option. To starboard you’ll find the spacious midship master, appointed with his-and-hers maple-lined hanging lockers, a credenza, end tables on each side of the bed and an HD TV. The forward guest stateroom forward also provides hanging locker storage, as well as cabinets on the port and starboard sides of the bed and a Bomar foredeck hatch.

The port side is dedicated to a guest (aft) and crew stateroom (forward). Both are appointed with the same high level of luxury and are uniquely designed to maximize comfort and function. The guest stateroom features side-by-side bunks, while the crew quarters have upper and lower bunks. Maple-lined hanging lockers, speakers recessed in the headliner and decorative indirect rope lighting round out the conveniences.

Both the master and guest heads boast Amtico flooring, LED lighting, upper and lower vanities (with the latter featuring a curved walnut face), an engineered stone countertop and a walk-in shower with satin nickel fixtures.

Flybridge

The flybridge mirrors other new generation Vikings with a space-saving streamlined walk-around center console. The beautifully crafted fiberglass module neatly holds a recessed black acrylic panel for flush-mounted all-glass electronics displays. The helm is also equipped with Bocatech switching, recessed radio boxes with split lids, a custom helm pod with single-lever electronic controls, stainless steel steering wheel, trim tab switches and electronic trolling valves. The flybridge layout makes excellent use of space, providing a variety and abundance of seating and storage. In addition to the helm and two companion pedestal chairs, there’s lounge seating to port and starboard with storage below. A third two-person lounge with fold-down armrests (and massive freezer beneath it) is integrated into the console’s forward end. It’s a great place to put your feet up and enjoy the ride home from the canyons. Nested in the four corners of the flybridge are more smart storage solutions, including a sink and a refrigerated drink box.

Electrical/Mechanical

Control of the electrical systems is easily managed, with conveniently located distribution panels in the salon and galley equipped with simple-to-use and clearly labeled conventional switches. In the engineroom, a series of dedicated pumps for the air conditioning, live wells, washdown and other seawater-fed components have been designed, engineered and installed for durability and longevity.

The engineroom, lazarette, forward bilge and anchor locker are coated with Snow White Awlgrip, a highly durable urethane, for visibility and easier maintenance. The engineroom houses numerous mechanical systems with superior performance and durability, including engineroom ventilation, fire suppression and oil changing systems. Batteries are expertly mounted in custom fiberglass storage boxes, and the engineroom is also home to a pair of battery chargers and an Onan 21.5 kW E-QD (electronic quiet diesel) Series genset with an option for a second.

The 64 will also be available as an Enclosed Bridge model, featuring our signature design that includes a complete forward control station, its own luxurious salon with walnut cabinetry and HD TV, stairs from the salon to the bridge and a docking station on the aft deck.

The Viking subsidiaries Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics will provide custom tower and electronics installations for turn-key delivery.

Twin MAN V12 1550CRM (1550 MHP) diesels serve as the standard power, with several options ranging from twin 1900 MHP to 2025 MHP powerplants. Hull No. 1 of the 64 Convertible will be powered with a pair of MTU Series 12V 2000 M96X (2002MHP) engines.

Viking Yachts 64 Review

The Viking Yachts 64 sport-fishing boat making waves on the water.

Seventy 62-foot convertibles have been delivered by Viking—six of them were used as part of the company’s demo program on the national and international stage. The popular model was highly regarded for both speed and performance. They were well-equipped and raised fish, but replacing a winner is never easy. In the past two decades, Viking has designed and delivered 550 boats from 60 to 70 feet, and there is no doubt it owns this segment of the production boating market. The new 64 is true to form, and it refuses to live in any other’s shadow.

Watch: The Marlin team explores the fishery of the Andaman Sea off Myanmar in this episode of Bluewater Chronicles .

Viking’s mantra is to build a better boat every day —a philosophy fostered by co-founders Bill and Bob Healey. These days, the second and third generation of Healeys are taking the reins, and the commitment remains as steadfast and relentless as ever as the company’s shipwrights navigate into their 58th year of building state-of-the-art tournament contenders.

The cockpit and fighting chair of the Viking Yachts 64 sport-fishing boat.

The cockpit is ground zero for tournament fishing. With 180 square feet of usable space, every inch has purpose. A pressurized 90-gallon transom livewell keeps bait ready for action, and the mezzanine conceals a freezer, chiller box, and tackle and gear storage. A portside step can be outfitted to stockpile ice or utilize an electric grill. The flybridge overhang delivers spray and sun protection, and air conditioning provides a cool breeze on those breathless tropical days. Centerline finds a watertight lazarette, with an optional power actuator to access the Seakeeper 26 gyrostabilizer. Corner scuppers drain water quickly, and can also be plumbed if you choose to fish with removable livewells. Fixtures for raw and fresh water as well as quick-disconnect fittings for oil changes and filling the water tank are located beneath the coaming boards, along with both 12- and 24-volt outlets and portside and starboard-side storage lockers.

The engine room of the Viking Yachts 64 sport-fishing boat.

Engine Room

The Snow White Awlgrip-finished engine room is a uniform work of art. Entered through the mezzanine, headroom on the centerline is more than 6 feet, with a solid 26½ inches between the irons. A pair of 21.5 kW Onan gensets are situated aft of the engines for those who prefer redundancy, and the twin setup is flawless.

The aft bulkhead is lined with DC and Octoplex distribution panels, Mastervolt battery chargers and Dometic refrigeration. The oil-transfer system for the engines, transmissions, generators, bilge pumps and various seacocks are labeled in typical Viking fashion, and all hoses and wire-runs throughout the machinery space are chafe-protected, neat and secure. Forward finds a toolbox, AC units, and the Furuno Omni sonar tube. Movement outboard is virtually effortless, and the equipment is lined up in military precision. To port is the main switch for the Side-Power DC bow thruster controls and the ElectroSea Clearline growth-prevention system; to starboard, the Dometic-Spot Zero watermaker combo, Willy Vac and Headhunter freshwater pump are easily accessible. A Delta-T ventilation and water-suppression system supplies the engine room with clean, ambient airflow.

The interior salon of the Viking Yachts 64 sport-fishing boat.

The sheer volume of the 64’s wide beam invites an uncluttered view forward—accented with satin-finished horizontal grain walnut that adds dimension throughout the interior. An electrical panel at eye level provides convenient access to the ship’s systems, and an adjacent 50-inch high-definition television rises from the cabinetry opposite the L-shaped sofa that hides significant storage inside.

A dinette is situated to port, and the raised base conceals another one of the yacht’s storage areas. The peninsula-style galley and bar feature engineered-stone counters and a pair of stools. Top-notch appliances, ample storage and premium vinyl Amtico flooring are among the standard highlights; an island galley option is available for those who prefer it.

The master stateroom of the Viking Yachts 64 sport-fishing boat.

Below, the four-stateroom, three-head layout provides the same striking walnut joinery, comfort and privacy, including a walk-around bed in the master, a choice of forward stateroom accommodations, and even more storage. A companionway laundry center adds to the 64’s numerous amenities.

Viking’s popular center-console helm station ramps up style and practicalities with a newly designed black acrylic helm dash featuring three flush-mounted Seatronx touchscreen displays. The angle of the dash brings the screens closer to the skipper to shorten the reach, and the entire console has been raised for better access to the radio boxes that flank the teak helm pod. Two boxes in the fiberglass hardtop house additional electronics and displays, as well as a set of teaser reels. The controller for the Omni sonar stows beneath the helm and includes a remote for the operator.

Three Release Marine Trillion helm chairs provide comfort for those long offshore jaunts, with convenient fore and aft drink boxes. Port and starboard benches provide storage, while the forward lounge sits on top of a 76-gallon freezer—another nod to the boat’s long-range travel capability.

Performance and Construction

Off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida, with Capt. Ryan Higgins—Viking’s Southeast sales manager and 15-year demo veteran—at the wheel, the 64-footer ripped into a two-way average top speed of 42 knots burning 200 gph with a near-full load of fuel. In a 2- to 3-foot sea and 10- to 12-knot northeast breeze, the boat was smooth and chatter-free; the wake was crisp and well-defined. Viking’s design manager, David Wilson, explains some of the details of this new hull’s running surface: “The refinements include the chine angle of attack and a softer radius transitioning from the deadrise to the chine. We also slightly lowered the strakes in the bow for increased spray-deflection. Moving aft, the chines widen, and together with the strakes, they provide excellent lift. We also changed the shaft angle and the propeller-pocket diameter, length and entry for better water flow to the props, and to minimize draft.”

The helm and electronic displays of the Viking Yachts 64 sport-fishing boat.

As I took the helm, the tie-bar-free SeaStar Optimus steering connected me instinctively to every maneuver I made. Slipping along at 1,800 rpm, we were making 29 knots using 122 gallons of fuel for a range of 403 nautical miles, while a brisk 35 knots at 2,100 rpm burned 156 gph for a range of 385 nm.

The new Viking 64 utilizes the builder’s proprietary manufacturing processes, including a vinylester resin-infused fiberglass hull with composite coring material throughout, structural composite bulkheads and integrated, resin-infused tankage. Vertically unified from design to delivery, 90 percent of what goes into building a Viking 64 is manufactured at its facility in New Gretna, New Jersey, and the company subsidiaries—Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers—help produce a turnkey product for a seamless build experience.

As Viking continues its head-down, nose-to-the-grindstone approach to the ever-evolving boating market, we are sure to see replacement models take hold. After all, as Abraham Lincoln once said: “The most reliable way to predict the future is to create it.”

64 foot sailboat

In southern Florida, the locals have a quip for those times when a 25-knot norther stacks the waves in the Gulf Stream so that the horizon appears like a long stretch of undulating hills: “The elephants are walking.” On those days, it’s usually best to stay inshore to avoid being trampled. But the Moody 64, a powerful Bill Dixon-designed cutter, doesn’t shy away from bleak forecasts, as I learned last February. The elephants were walking, but with 66,000 pounds of displacement to cushion the ride, a few soggy pachyderms weren’t going to spoil our day.

The Moody 64 is what Dixon calls “a crossover boat,” one that, through the efficient use of power-furling gear and winches, is designed to be managed by two very capable sailors but is big enough to attract those who expect to have family, friends, or crew aboard for more than just a few days. With a high-aspect masthead cutter rig, a fine bow, minimal wetted surface, and 22,000 pounds of ballast concentrated in a bulb at the bottom of its standard 8-foot-6-inch fin keel, the Moody 64 doesn’t conceal her aspirations for fast passages. In the 2002 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), hull number one smoked a fleet full of long-legged Oysters and Swans to win Class A and take fourth overall. She covered the 2,680-mile transatlantic course from Gran Canaria to St. Lucia in just under 13 1/2 days–that’s 200 miles per day.

While the 88-foot mast and deep draft limit your options on, say, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Moody’s best attributes would be wasted on The Ditch anyway. On a day that called for 12-foot seas in the Gulf Stream, we steamed out Miami’s Government Cut at a comfortable 8.6 knots with the 230-horsepower turbocharged Yanmar running at 2,000 rpm, just over half throttle, which is probably all she’ll ever need. Below, the well-insulated walk-in engine room reduced the rumble to a low hum.

The Moody’s hull is hand-laid fiberglass cored with inch-thick end-grain balsa bedded in a polyester bonding paste. Solid laminate is used wherever there are through-hull penetrations and also at the stem, keel, and skeg. A complex mix of glassed-in floors and stringers in the keel and main bilge area and in structural bulkheads and chainplate supports help stiffen the hull. Bonded-in tray moldings also provide support in the forward and after sections. The deck is both bonded and mechanically fastened to an inward-turning flange on the hull. Monel rivets driven through an aluminum backing plate in the flange serve as the mechanical fasteners. The deck-edge bulwark is then fitted with a laminated teak caprail. A full-length rubrail protects the hull, which comes in three gelcoat colors: blue, white, and burgundy. Meticulous computer-assisted design (CAD) engineering and a long background in streamlined production give the builder, Princess Yachts, the ability to produce eight to 10 of these boats each year.

The Moody has a partially exposed skeg-hung rudder and a propeller offset slightly to starboard (so the shaft will clear the skeg when it’s removed for service or inspection). It maneuvers quite handily in tight quarters thanks to the standard 15-horsepower Sleipner bow thruster. The Whitlock steering system, with a 1/2-horsepower Whitlock Mamba autopilot drive, uses robust direct rod linkages to transfer torque to the rudder shaft and provide smooth and positive control from the helm.

Once we cleared the sea buoy, we began tacking north, carrying what would be an excellent heavy-weather sail plan: full staysail and main reefed to the second spreader. The wind was gusting above 25 knots, and though we could clearly carry more canvas, we footed to windward at a dry, relaxing, and extremely comfortable 6.5 knots. Waves inside the drop-off were running about 5 feet, and the periods were short, but the Moody’s fine bow sliced through the slop without laboring. Below, in the cavernous main saloon, the motion was slow and easy, although the area around the mast exhibited a few squeaks of protest.

When we raised the mainsail to just under the top spreader and unrolled the yankee, the Moody sprang to life. On a beam reach, with the wind gusting over 20 knots, we surged ahead at just under 10 knots, and we could have held that speed all day. Hard on the wind, the boat was very well behaved, and we were able to bring the apparent wind to less than 35 degrees true before feeling pinched.

Deck Details

The Moody carries most of its 17-foot beam from the midship station all the way to the aft sections. The beam allows plenty of room for twin 42-inch wheels, each helm with its own bench seat and padded hip rest. The arrangement not only gives you your pick of leeward or windward steering but also opens a clear passage to the bathing platform aft. Working the autopilot controls and instruments on the binnacle requires reaching through the wheel spokes, which could be a problem should you urgently need to disengage the autopilot.

The cockpit is divided by a small step between the higher steering stations aft and the lower, ample, main-cockpit area that’s tucked behind a fixed windscreen. The forward area seats six comfortably around a permanent drop-leaf table that has well-placed stainless-steel grabrails. Though this spot offers better protection from the wind and sea, the upper steering station provides a better view ahead and easier access to the main deck. From either perch, you have sufficient command of the sails.

The rig geometry uses triple aft-swept spreaders with cap shrouds, upper and lower intermediates, and aft lower shrouds. The cap and lowers lead to a single deck fitting inboard near the raised cabin top, allowing easy fore-and-aft passage on either side. The load is transmitted from this fitting to a rugged, encapsulated plywood web; the web, in turn, is tied to the gridlike floor structure and main bulkheads.

The foredeck is clear and uncluttered. Stainless-steel line guards protect all cowls, providing convenient handholds as you work your way forward. A huge, 36-inch-diagonal hatch just aft of the inner forestay leads down to the skipper’s cabin and allows for quick launching and stowing of spinnakers or storm sails. The Lewmar 3000 vertical anchor winch serves twin stainless-steel rollers and feeds into a large, self-draining, divided chain locker. Additional storage lies behind the cockpit in a wide and deep lazarette that’s essentially a seagoing garage. Also aft is a dedicated locker for an eight-man canister life raft. Stainless-steel dinghy davits are standard.

Down below, interior designer Roel De Groot uses a combination of chrome, polished stainless steel, curved wood panels, and fabrics to project elegance as well as meet the fundamental requirements of an oceangoing boat. Though you can’t alter the standard layout at the factory, personalization comes through the selection of upholstery and curtain fabrics and the choice of satin-finished teak or cherry veneer for furnishings. The cabin sole is simulated teak-and-holly veneer. Although stairs at five different locations disrupt an otherwise flowing floor plan, they fall at natural transition points between cabins or stations and have LED courtesy lighting. After a while, these ups and downs will become second nature to those who spend time on the boat.

A big C-shaped dinette to port is the centerpiece of the saloon, with a small sofa opposite. Hatches, opening ports, and large saloon windows provide plenty of natural light. Although a grabrail near the companionway is handy for the transition between abovedecks and below, there’s a gap at midsaloon where you wish you had a couple of more handholds.

I was most impressed by the large U-shaped galley that’s one step down from the saloon. Not only does it feature the ideal ergonomic triangular layout of the stove, sink, and fridge; it also has the counter space many homes lack. The fore-and-aft U shape allows hands-free support while under way, and the step down keeps the cook at eye level with those seated in the saloon. My only complaint with the galley was that the push-button drawer and cabinet catches used here and throughout the boat will open when you bump against them, spilling the locker contents–typically at a time when you have more important things to worry about.

The forward-facing nav station is an ample nook with plenty of storage. The passage aft to the owner’s cabin follows behind the nav station. The Moody’s generous beam pays off here, allowing the passage to double as a study, with its own desk and chair, or as a cabin with a temporary sea berth, which folds down when needed. Opposite the study, an engine-room door gives access to most of the ship’s systems.

Stretching the full width of the boat aft, the owner’s cabin features a queen-size centerline berth flanked by settees. A secondary benefit of the twin-wheel arrangement is the high headroom it allows on either side of the berth and above.

The creature comforts on the boat I sailed included air-conditioning, a compact washer and dryer, two big-screen flat-panel televisions, an icemaker, a wine locker, and a killer custom sound system. From a buyer’s perspective, one of the most attractive features of the Moody 64 is the long list of standard equipment. This includes a Raymarine instrument package, a Lewmar power windlass with remote control from the helm, and Furuno radar and chart plotters at the helm and nav station.

Bill Dixon and the folks at Moody have come up with a great combination of performance and comfort that’s sure to please anyone who appreciates a smooth turn of speed to go with that chilled California chardonnay. And should foul weather finally catch you, she sure can tame those elephants.

Navetta 64 - The Absolute Pathfinder

Navetta 64

The already-complete Navetta range has expanded with a tangible expression of generous and open-minded engineering. All of Absolute’s best features have been implemented as well as some amazing onboard innovations.

The Navetta 64, The Absolute Pathfinder, like her siblings has 100% Navetta DNA and it easy to see why.

The wide and uninterrupted side-glass window, which runs from the aft mirror to the windshield, outlines her exterior shapes. These are characterized by the significant enlargement of the bow windows and the opening of the side gunwales in the cockpit.

Navetta 64

In the Beach Club version, the transom can be turned from a large storage space into an actual double cabin at the water’s surface sealed tight with a fully-glazed, certified watertight access door.

Beach Club by day and VIP cabin with an en-suite head by night: this alchemy is made possible thanks to the placing of the crew cabin—with 2 berths—directly accessible from the second starboard-side door.

A triumph of livability both at daytime and at nighttime, right at the stern, right on the water!

Navetta 64

Aboard the Navetta 64, all spaces are designed to offer the maximum enjoyment of each cabin —always panoramic and bright, thanks to unprecedented-sized windows. In addition, the spaces are furnished and refined with everything you need to feel just like at home, without any sacrifices.

The flybridge has a far greater width than found on any other 64-foot yacht. On the main deck, the salon is surrounded by frameless glass windows, offering breathtaking panoramas. The comfortable sofas, the large table, the entertainment area, and the galley—easily connectable to the cockpit—top it all off. The entire main deck is overlooked by a raised helm and a massive windshield of over 10 feet, curved and frameless for absolute visibility.

Below the deck, the master cabin is placed in the bow with a king-size berth, large side windows, and a full-beam head. The VIP suite really stands out: its livability is astounding and the materials selected are simply exquisite. Furthermore, the third cabin is a double stateroom with single beds. Finally, all cabins have en-suite heads.

The jury based the final decision on her functionality and livability, in their words:  “She embodies the perfect combination of flybridge powerboat and explorer. The Navetta 64 provides plenty of space both in her interior and on deck. Large window frontages, as well as the innovative execution of the stern cabin with direct access to the swim platform, convey a unique sense of lifestyle on the water.”

BEST OF BOATS (2020)

According to a jury of nautical journalists with great experience and passion for testing: “It’s one of the biggest 60-footer ever seen. Actually it has 64’5”, so the space on board is enormous, open and bright. Adding to the incredible master cabin the new Navetta has a beach club on the aft. It’s something special.”

WORLD YACHTS TROPHIES (2020)

“The Navetta range developed by the italian manufacturer Absolute has been enriched by a new model with totally new features such as a beach club on the platform that allows you to enjoy a very nice living space near the water. To ensure that this place is perfectly watertight, Absolute has developed an automatic inflatable seal system as soon as the doors are closed. Three beautiful cabins plus once for the sailor share the lower deck, benefiting from a very nice outside view thanks to the presence of numerous glass surfaces. Another particularly interesting feature is that the main part of the fly can be completely closed.”

Navetta 75

To continually improve its models, Absolute reserves the discretion to produce on its own boats all the suitable variations, also in waiver of the specifications contained in catalogues, price lists, technical files, internet websites, advertising, newspaper articles and in every other publication, without any prior notice: even if Absolute tries, its best to update the informative documentation, every type of quoted publication can not be considered a certain and updated source of the current executive specifications. 64′ Expedition Sailing Yacht

Heyman Yachts

Nothing ordinary

Beyond the Horizon

This is one of the most interesting yachts I know: She is unusually comfortable at sea, in any climate. She is one of the safest pleasure yachts of her size, designed to be as simple and reliable as possible. And she sails just fine, despite not having a ‘proper’ deep keel.

An unusually well-protected cockpit

An unusually well-protected cockpit

Access to deck via a door

Access to deck via a door

An unusual set of properties like these obviously do not happen by themselves. In the case of the ATOA, they are in part the result of some extremely careful planning and engineering. But, to some extent they are also the result of coincidence. How did this happen?

The Atoa 64 was conceived as a competent expedition yacht – ATOA refers to Arctic to Antarctic. With a visit to the Amazon river on the way so we could perhaps have called her Atoama . The requirements were very specific:

Design Parameters

  • A fast passagemaker, at least 8 knots average offshore under engine or sail – off the wind or to windward!
  • Draft limited to 1,60 m and able to dry out, self-supported, in tidal waters.
  • Protected propeller, good for all sorts of conditions
  • Completely self-reliant.
  • Foolproof keel , rudder and rig . As long as the keel, rudder and rig stays on a boat, the boat will usually be fine
  • Immensely strong construction, capable of handling any weather without damage and able to go through thin ice.
  • A double-ended stern was desirable, if it did not detract from the basic qualities
  • A walk-in engine room, possible to do maintenance and repairs on site
  • A completely enclosed pilot house from which the yacht could be handled for long periods in adverse weather.
  • Cockpit as sheltered as ever possible.
  • Easily handled by one or two persons
  • Three cabins, one of which could be used as a crew cabin, with en-suite layout

During the project phase, all sorts of different concepts were evaluated. Our client suggested twin keels – these were ruled out for their inherently lacklustre performance. A ballasted swing keel was deemed too vulnerable, and handling it was thought too sensitive. A lifting keel was regarded not fit for the south Atlantic. Even an ordinary fixed fin keel was ruled out as being, on one hand, too deep for inland waters, and on the other hand too vulnerable for ice or grounding.

Same with a spade rudder; for an expedition yacht such a rudder would be too sensitive and would not offer any realistic back-up solution in the event of a failure.

Please note that all these concepts are fine for almost any boat and we use most of them all the time. Only, this particular yacht was supposed to be able to be fine and safe in the most remote parts of the world, on her own, and under any conditions.

Efficiency to windward

Shoal draft keel, protected balanded rudder, daggerboards

Shoal draft keel, protected balanded rudder, daggerboards

Finally, a somewhat unique concept grew on the drawing board:  The boat would be built with a long, very shallow keel, extending all the way aft to protect the propeller and support the rudder. This would be the backbone of the yacht and allow a reasonable position for approx. 12 tons of lead ballast.

The rudder would of course be balanced in order not to strain the helm or autopilot too much. It would be at the same time be fully supported by the keel with a lower bearing, and fully protected by the same keel. This also meant that the controllable pitch propeller would be fully protected, and the propeller would be very close to the rudder for superior handling in port.

On the outside of the engine room each side, through the side decks, there would be asymmetric daggerboards. These would provide a lift to windward equivalent to a modern fin-keel yacht with 2,8 m draft. If one of the daggerboards got damaged in the Antarctic, the yacht would still be able to keep sailing. She would lose that last edge to windward, but that would be all.

Add stability

Bunker diesel to windward, daggeboard down to leeward

Bunker diesel to windward, daggeboard down to leeward

Outside of the dagger boards, towards the hull sides and under the side decks, this would leave an empty space each side. Unless we put ballast tanks there. But the boat wouldn’t be happy in freezing conditions with freezing water ballast, no matter if it was fresh or salt, so we decided to use this space for spare diesel bunker tanks. 2000 litres, to be half in each tank, or all on the windward side during a passage.

Again, with the combined stability gained by the filled windward tank together with the lead keel, this would provide the equivalent kind of righting moment that one would expect from a modern fin-keel yacht with 2,8 m draft. Voilà!

If the spare diesel had to be used she would lose some 10% of her sail-carrying ability but apart from this slight loss of performance, her safety or comfort would not be compromised.  So, essentially, we were creating a totally safe yacht with 1,6 m draft that would behave like it had a modern cruiser-racer fin keel 2,8 m deep.

As dry as possible

Maybe the real beauty of this concept is the ability to dry out. The dagger boards serve as perfect legs. And the yacht would in such case rest on its keel bottom, not on the hull itself. In  contrast, drying out with a lifting-keel boat could be a nightmare if you discover that the hull plating is sitting on a boulder. With the thick sole of this long ballast keel resting onto the sea bed, one will still be safe.  T aking all aspects in account, we knew this design was as safe and amphibious and fast and simple we could come up with for a 40-ton, world cruising 64-foot sailing yacht.

It never turns out the way you expect

The ATOA was built beautifully in Enkhuizen, Holland. During the build, however, a decision was made not to build the daggerboards. We were very concerned, fearing that she would become a mediocre ‘motorsailer’ kind of yacht.

The 64' as she turned out, with bunker ballast tanks

The 64′ as she turned out, with bunker ballast tanks

As it happened, the test sails with ATOA proved us all wrong.

In blustery, freezing conditions on the Ijselmeer she reached out of Enkhuizen at good speed, 9,4 knots, under reefed main and 106% jib. This was all expected, because even if she is on the medium to heavy displacement side of the scale, she is a slippery boat with a long waterline and a very fine entry.  She was easy on the helm and felt nimble to handle. Everybody perched in the forward sheltered part of the cockpit or inside the pilot house.

As we headed up close-hauled, the speed dropped to 8,2 – 8,5 knots. The yacht made approx. 98 degrees between the tacks, counting leeway. Thus, she wasn’t very close winded, but she compensated more than well in speed. We didn’t even try to sheet harder and head up more – she had the potential, but speed seemed to be ATOA’s thing more than close-windedness.

Still, looking at the polar, with such speeds ATOA’s ability to windward would definitely take her anywhere, with panache.

64' close-hauled at 8,3 knots

64′ close-hauled at 8,3 knots

64' Expedition Yacht, easily driven hull

64′ Expedition Yacht, easily driven hull

The wind was a steady 24 knots, occasionally topping 28. Still with a reef in the main, we hoisted the mizzen. The speed  increased by perhaps two tenths, she needed a little more helm and if the mizzen was sheeted hard the pressure on the wheel increased but still not enough to make steering heavy.

A little later, the diesel ballast was tested. It took around 4 minutes to pump the 2000 litres to windward, during which she righted herself from 18 to 14 degrees. She certainly felt powerful bearing away, again increasing to 10 knots, with little heel.

General Arrangement

The pilot house and the cockpit are closely connected, via a low staircase and big windows. The forward part of the cockpit is well protected under the overhanging roof and there is a huge dining space in the open or under the fixed bimini. Inside the pilot house are two sofas, with a coffee table and side tables. Visibility is excellent and under engine the yacht can be handled with ease from here.

Down the staircase forward, the emphasis is very clearly on the generous living room with its four areas – kitchen, dining, a lounging area and navigation. Forward is the owner’s cabin and bathroom. Facing aft, under the pilot house and between two watertight bulkheads, is the engine room which houses all major installations. There is good floor space and access to all installations and 1,57 m standing headroom.

Down a staircase aft from the pilot house are two smaller cabins, one en-suite guest double and a guest twin cabin. This makes use of the third bathroom which also serves as the yacht’s daytime w.c.

Forward and aft, accessible from deck, are two walk-in stow rooms.

Understanding a fast shoal-draft full keel yacht

The ATOA’s performance on the wind was unexpected and of course tickled our curiosity. Somewhat later we had the opportunity to discuss our experience with Professor Lars Larsson at Chalmers University of Technology, in Göteborg, Sweden, and later to start a study on shoal draft keel concepts. The study was conducted by Andre Sauer under Professor Larsson and Michal Orych, comparing a thoroughly modern cruiser / racer with a deep keel and the same boat with a very shallow keel.

The two keel concepts were tested on two different hulls, one 20m long, one 10m. This time, the keel was given a slightly more sophisticated shape, with a bulb gradually turning into an beaver tail kind of end-plate back at the rudder.

The results, in short, are that the boat with the shallow keel still sails rather well. Even to windward.

Study of deep fin vs. shoal, full keel

Study of deep fin vs. shoal, full keel

As expected, the shoal-draft VMG (windward ability) is certainly inferior to the deep-draft boat.  Still, I am not convinced that such extremely shoal draft would work as well for any boat: Our hypothesis is that it only works well for relatively large and slippery yachts. That the efficiency of this inefficient keel is very speed-dependent. There is room for further research on this.

I am not advocating anything here. Personally, I have a very soft spot for fast and responsive boats. On the other hand, giving away half a knot may perhaps be acceptable if you are going at around 8 or 9 knots anyway – especially taking into account the way most boats are used, very shoal draft keels could perhaps be a serious option for some.  There are lovely cruising grounds with limited water… being able to enter more or less any harbour may be worth a lot more than losing that half knot.

It is interesting to contemplate this as you take a look at the market: More or less every boat has a kind of deep draft fin keel – be it fixed, lifting or swinging. If you set out to search the Internet for data on a thousand different sailing boats, chances are that you will not find a single one equipped with a fixed keel of such shoal draft that there is almost no keel there at all. Still, I think the ATOA shows that this may be a sensible option.

You can read more about the shoal-draft research here
