Along with their team of naval architects and engineers, Fleming has been hard at work for the last 3 years creating a completely new design, the Fleming 85. The aim for this new model was simply to build the finest ocean going pilothouse motor-yacht in every respect. Maintaining the classic Fleming look, this new model is available in two distinct versions– an open flybridge, and a new enclosed flybridge design. With the enclosed flybridge option, the pilothouse is moved to the enclosed upper deck, giving more space below for flexible galley layouts. With true ocean crossing range, superb hull fuel efficiency, and speeds of up to 25 knots– this is the ultimate cruising yacht.
Please note: with hull 85-001 still being built, the images provided are high quality 3D renders of the Fleming 85. More accurate details and pictures to come soon.

Enough time has passed that I feel comfortable mentioning an overall boatbuilding blunder that transpired during the go-go days of the old economy-you know, the period that vanished with a puff about a year ago. During this crazy time, I sensed something wicked was brewing when our editorial office received weekly press releases announcing the birth of yet another boatbuilder or perhaps a new model. Many of these designs never made it to launch day, while others, unfortunately, did.
In my opinion, we experienced a shallow period in boatbuilding. There was a rush to bring product to market in order to meet a superficial demand. Thus, features such as the number of flatscreen televisions, MP3 plugs, exotic counter materials, and the type of leather on the sofa outweighed priorities such as hull design, cruising comfort, performance, and quality construction. Some in the industry lost sight of the real joy and importance of going to sea on a good, comfortable, honest boat.
Well, those days are nothing but a memory. A new trend is once again blazing the trail, clawing past all the static of the past: real boats, built for real boaters, by real boatbuilders. And that’s exactly what I met head-on while running the new Viking Sport Cruisers 85 Motor Yacht on the south cost of England. This peppy little ship was designed to cruise in comfort and safety-pure and simple.
A major reason for the success of the 85, and the entire Sport Cruisers line for that matter, is the collaboration between U.K.-based Princess Yachts and New Jersey’s Viking Yachts. Each Viking Sport Cruiser that I’ve tested since 2000 reveals a smart blend of practicality, sound engineering, and timeless style. “Our guys use their boats,” said James Noble, Viking Sport Cruisers’ marketing director. Princess offers the engineering, construction, and design expertise, and incorporates Viking’s formidable building experience, strong dealer network, and knowledge of how its customers go boating. It’s a tough formula to beat.
During our test, Noble made it clear that the new 85 is not simply an evolution of the now discontinued 84. Instead, it is actually a “smaller” SC 95. I ran the 84 in 2001 and at the time was impressed by the interior volume and layout. Yet, to Noble’s point, the 85 is vastly different. For example, the deckhouse of the 84 curved inward. Yes, it was a nice design element, but the treatment compromised some interior volume in the salon and galley areas. On the other hand, the most noticeable feature when walking through the double-sliding doors of the 85 is the expansive space. Part of this can be attributed to the salon layout and use of free-form furniture. Our test boat featured a sofa with two armchairs, opposite a large-screen television. Forward is a dining table with seating for eight and lockers to house the factory-supplied dishware. It’s refreshing to see a dining table that can actually accommodate the same number of diners that the yacht can berth. The entire salon and dining area is bathed in cascading natural light from thoughtfully placed side windows that also allow you to see the world passing by as you relax on the sofa. These details do not happen by accident.
The galley also offered a pleasant departure from many European designs. For the most part, European galleys tend to resemble the butler’s pantry of other boats, particularly American ones. The galley on the 85 is not immense, but it is larger than some of its competitors’ and very functional, thanks to a full range of appliances. Our test boat featured an optional configuration that kept the area open to the pilothouse. Standing at the counter, the cook can easily serve anyone seated at the small dinette in the lower helm area. There was plenty of counter space for serious meal preparation and enough stowage to provision for an extended cruise. A side door will allow service crew to come and go without disturbing guests.
Are there bigger galleys in some other similar-sized U.S.-built boats? You bet, but often those are at the expense of a functional lower helm station. That’s not the case on the 85. Every Viking Sport Cruiser I’ve tested has featured an exceptionally designed helm area. On the 85, all gauges are placed directly in the line of sight, as is the full electronics array. The single-lever throttle and gear controls are placed perfectly within reach, providing a natural orientation along with an extremely comfortable, form-fitting, helm seat. You could use the dinette to port to spread out a chart and cruising guides while planning your next destination.
Walking through the lower deck, I was reminded yet again that the 85 shares more of a family pedigree with the 95 than the 84. The primary difference is the result of placing the crew quarters abaft the engineroom on the 85. (They were in the forepeak of the 84 with access from a bow hatch.) This provides a true four-stateroom, fourhead layout. The master stateroom expands across the entire beam and rivals many 100-footers. There are four large ports on each side, providing a light, airy feel. I especially like the dinette for two on the starboard side. It provides a perfect perch to wake up with a morning cup of coffee and the paper, or to spread out with a laptop and bang out some work after your morning swim.
Forward, the starboard stateroom has a walkaround berth, two opening ports, and two hanging lockers. You can also specify two berths side by side in this cabin. The port cabin on our test boat featured two twin berths. Both staterooms are en suite. Forward is a huge VIP stateroom, with a walk-in locker, plenty of stowage, and a vanity.
By moving the crew quarters abaft the engineroom, the designers were able to create first-class crew accommodations, unlike a lot of European boats in this size range. Features include a separate crew mess with a refrigerator, plus a dinette, and two good-sized staterooms.
Engineroom access is through the crew area. (Soft patches are incorporated in the salon sole above in case an engine needs to be removed.) I found the space on the old 84 tight, but serviceable. On the 85, there is more than enough room to get around the 1,825-horsepower Caterpillar C32A diesels. Wiring runs were neat, coded, and labeled. It was obvious that thought was given to making both routine service checks and major service items easy. Like Noble said, his buyers use their boats. And this area would represent a home run to that clientele.
The thoughtful details continued on deck, with attention to small items-like placing the water fills aft, accessed from the swim platform. Anyone who has dragged a dirty hose across a deck will appreciate this thoughtful feature. Forward, there is a large deck locker, and a clever seating area with a sunpad, settee, and table. A dual windlass system will address a variety of anchoring and mooring needs.
Viking Sport Cruisers offers a flying bridge option that is constructed and outfitted in New Jersey by its subsidiary. The bridge on our test boat was set up for cruising and entertaining alike. There is plenty of seating for relaxing guests, and features include a Jacuzzi, large bar, ice maker, grill, and another well-thought-out helm station.
One of the things I’ve come to expect about a Viking Sport Cruiser is that she’s not just another pretty face-and the 85 is certainly no exception. With the C32A diesels, she achieves a cruising speed of between 26 and 28 knots, depending on how the boat is outfitted. Expect stabilizers to take a little over a knot of speed away. The top end is again between 30 and 32 knots. (Our test boat was lightly equipped, with no gear, tender, or stabilizers.) It stands to reason that a company such as Viking Yachts, known for fast, tough convertibles, would ensure its builder partner would be of similar pedigree. In a gradual three- to four-foot swell, the 85 rose on plane with no protest, settling in on about a five-degree running angle. She has the response of a boat about half her size.
The Viking Sport Cruisers 85 Motor Yacht is proof positive that if a builder finds its niche, success will follow. When it goes above and beyond that to ensure it’s building boats for serious yachtsmen to take cruising, not to just hang out on at a marina, then success is almost guaranteed. After all, we’re finding our that the good old days weren’t always as good as they seemed.

The Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht is a handsome 85.9-foot luxury motoryacht first launched by the Taiwan-based brand in 2017. A large, elegant yacht that takes its styling cues from larger models in the fleet, such as the popular 120, the 85 is a choice blend of luxurious onboard comfort and hardy seaworthiness. With five well-appointed staterooms and an expansive flybridge, the 85 MY is ideal for entertaining family and friends. An optional skylounge offers an intimate, enclosed lounge and helm on the bridge deck with panoramic views, while an open flybridge offers the best in al fresco entertainment.

Moveable safety rails add security to the large swim platform, ideal for waterfront cocktails or even sportfishing. The aft cockpit on this Ocean Alexander Yacht stars a well-appointed dining area with a nearby wet bar. The main salon is welcoming, with L-shaped seating for six to starboard and portside armchairs. A formal open dining area for eight sits forward and starboard, while a wet bar to port ensures none of your guests get thirsty. A day head can be found to port near a companionway leading to four staterooms below deck. To starboard and behind a bulkhead is a gourmet galley kitchen with wraparound counters. A forward dinette allows this to be used as a country kitchen or a more professional, staffed galley. A standing fridge-freezer, granite countertops, exotic wood cabinetry, and marble flooring are richly stylish, with practical luxuries like a dishwasher and trash compactor in addition to a microwave, electric cook top and oven.
The forward portside helm station is fully outfitted with a Garmin package and two Garmin touchscreens, with two Stidd chairs for the captain and a companion. Guests can interact with the helm from a starboard seating and dining area. Side doors on either side lead to the plush foredeck with a plush three-person sunpad.
Up on the flybridge, you’ll find space for a tender and a launching crane on the aft deck. Just forward is a large sunpad to starboard, adjacent to a curved sofa and dining table. To port, you’ll find an impressive wet bar with five bar stools. The upper helm is centrally positioned, with two Stidd chairs. With the skylounge option, the forward half to the flybridge is enclosed and owners gain a day head.
Below deck, owners will be delighted by the full-beam, king-sized suite located amidships. His-and-hers en suites with an adjoining walk-in shower allow you to reach new heights of pampering. Two twin cabins are situated to port and starboard, just behind the VIP suite in the bow. Each guest cabin has its own en suite and shower cubicle.
The crew quarters sleeps 2-3 crew and is located aft of the engine room and can be accessed via the swim platform or a portside companionway on the cockpit. A mini galley, dinette, and day head allow crew to spend their down time in comfort, with one single cabin and a full captain’s cabin. The 85 Motoryacht is powered by twin 1600hp MTU 10V2000 engines and reaches a top speed of 23 knots. At a cruising speed of 10 knots, this yacht has a range of 2,050nm.

The global authority in superyachting
Australian yacht builder Palm Beach Motor Yachts has announced its new 27.6-metre flagship known as Palm Beach 85 (PB85).
A statement from the yard said: "Entering the superyacht realm is a natural progression for Palm Beach Motor Yachts, the acclaimed builder established by ocean-racing champion and performance yacht builder, Mark Richards. The Palm Beach 85 (PB85) is designed to surpass all industry standards in luxury, onboard comfort and performance, elevating the brand's custom offerings to a new level."
A key focus of the PB85 is comfortable crew well-being with spacious living quarters as well as well-appointed living areas. The main deck is characterised by a convenient and sociable single-level living and entertaining space, including the saloon, which stretches from the forward helm station to the covered cockpit. Meanwhile, a generous aft deck offers exceptional views and easy access to the water.
Located amidships, the full-beam owner's stateroom boasts a king-size bed, ensuite bathroom, ample storage and large windows.
PB85 is constructed using Palm Beach's proprietary V-Warp Technology, a design and construction philosophy developed through Richards' experience as an ocean-racing champion and performance yacht designer.
With the aim of enhancing overall performance, the hull is fused directly to the carbon fibre structure, bulkheads, deck and superstructure of the vessel. Key features of the V-Warp Technology hull include a fine entry, a graceful curvature amidships and minimal deadrise at the transom, helping to reduce drag while adding buoyancy, stability and lift.
Speaking of the PB85, Richards said: "The Palm Beach 85 represents a dream achieved. When I was a young man working on the docks in Sydney, I would watch the yachts cruising through the harbour and knew that one day I'd do the same on my own boat. When the Palm Beach 85 splashes, she'll be the largest yacht we've built and will represent a new level of luxury, fuel efficiency and performance in the yachting industry.”
He continued: "At Palm Beach, we’re constantly improving, innovating, pushing ourselves and exceeding industry expectations - the PB85 is the result of countless hours of hard work by our entire team. I am extremely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve."

Superyacht security: here are the top ways to protect your voyage.
Superyacht security on the high seas
Despite lower-than-average piracy incidents this year, the shipping and yachting industry continues to pressure all vessels to remain vigilant as violent attacks remain a concern. The International Chamber of Commerce International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Center (IMB) detailed that sixty incidents of piracy and armed robbery against commercial ships were recorded in the first half of 2024, a decrease from 65 incidents for the same period in 2023.
ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO says, “While we are reassured to see a fall in the number of overall reported acts of piracy, the concerning rise in incidents of a violent nature underscores the need for continued vigilance from the international community to ensure the safety of all seafarers — especially at this time of heightened uncertainty for maritime transport.”
Luxury yacht rendering with protection system
Violence towards crew continues, with 85 taken hostage compared to 36 in the same period last year, with 11 kidnapped and two threatened. Guns and knives were reported in 34 of the 59 incidents, a worrying increase from the same period the previous year. While most reported pirate attacks are on commercial vessels, Yacht owners are advised to maintain strict anti-piracy watch and measures, especially at anchor.
Ransomware gang targets google chrome users in surprise new threat twist, trump vs. harris 2024 polls: harris leads by 4 points in post-dnc survey.
The Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN), notes the top destinations in 2024 for theft aboard a private boat are Grenada, St Martin, St Lucia, St Vincent, British Virgin Islands, and Antigua. In February, the catamaran Simplicity was found abandoned off a beach on the island of St. Vincent. According to reports , the bodies of the owners were likely thrown overboard after their yacht was hijacked.
I spoke with yacht owners about how they are spending millions setting up their large yachts with military-style technology while training their crews to avoid conflicts, as well as MARSS , the leading company providing security solutions. They provide protection for the maritime and yachting industry against airborne, surface, and subsurface threats. This includes enhancing surveillance capabilities with AI detection and verification, as well as connecting to onboard countermeasures and remote support.
The luxury French tourist Le Ponant yacht was seized by Somalian Pirates in 2009.
According to Frederik Giepmans, MD of Safety and Security with MARSS, “Developments in AI are transforming security on superyachts by improving accuracy and efficiency and reducing operator burden. In the case of securing yachts, AI can be used to rapidly analyze data from sensors, such as radio-frequency detection, cameras, radars, and sonar, and present key relevant information as specific targets and threats.”
“What may appear as a few pixels in the distance on your screen can be identified as a bird or drone threat with the help of AI,” he adds. “AI can also help determine whether something is a threat based on parameters such as course, direction, and speed, and will alert operators only when there is a real threat and action is required. Systems like MARSS’ NiDAR have been using AI for years to learn, constantly improve, and help operators to work better, faster, safer.”
NiDAR CUAS Compact anti drone system
Additionally, MARSS says “With the rise of intelligent, evolving, and more sophisticated threats around the globe—particularly with the proliferation of drones—superyachts need to have the correct safety systems in place to protect those on board. Yacht owners want seamless, unobtrusive protection so they and their guests can get on with life, knowing any incoming threats can be detected.”
NiDAR is the primary protection system, and offers long-range, multi-layer, 360° perimeter security for superyachts, tenders, toys, guests, and crew. The product uses the latest sensor technology connected via MARSS' proprietary command and control touch user interface with data fusion and machine learning capabilities. In real-time, NiDAR monitors, identifies, and tracks manned and unmanned air, surface, and underwater objects. The system utilizes AI-powered software algorithms to automatically analyze and rank threats, alerting captains and crew to take appropriate action.
ClimberGuard technology
There are countless protection devices on the market, but the most popular include the following from MARSS:
NiDAR X-COMPACT , an air surveillance system designed for use on mobile platforms, including superyachts. The system is equipped with radars, an IR camera, and Radio Frequency Monitoring to provide 360° surveillance for protection against drones and unmanned vehicles. The NiDAR CUAS Compact system (NiDAR Core is the company’s software-based AI platform, while CUAS means counter unmanned aerial systems) can detect and thwart up to 1,000 drones. The customizable system uses artificial intelligence and sensors for drone detection and optional electronic countermeasures.
CLiMBERguard : This unique high-accuracy climber detection system is an automatic climber detection system for the instant detection, classification and alert of onboarding activities on the side of a vessel or maritime structure.
MOBtronic is MARSS's Man Overboard detection system. This has been designed for vessels with a minimum 18-foot freeboard, (typically cruise ships) as the inbuilt radar needs sufficient time to create a track and identify the thing going overboard as a person (as opposed to a deck chair, umbrella). MARSS is already working on a system for yachts which would assist vessels experiencing rough waters and inclement weather.
Feadship escape pod concept
Other protection additions for yacht owners include Long-Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD), which provide pain-inducing sound beams to invaders; Underwater Sonar Detection Systems, which detect movement below the surface; exterior lockdown systems, which provide total lockdown and are used on many yachts; and Safe Rooms, which act as fortified areas on a ship where the crew can take refuge in the event of a pirate attack.
Dutch superyacht builder Oceanco receives countless special security requests from clients as they fit their massive yachts. Among the requests are Citadel rooms, where owners can retreat to a hidden safe room to override access to the yacht's navigational and satellite communications systems. The rooms have ballistic-protected walls, an independent ventilation system, and water and food supplies.
IMB Piracy & Armed Robbery Map for August 2024 (yellow=attempted attack, orange=vessel boarded, ... [+] blue=vessel fired upon, red=hijacked, purple=suspicious activity)
Also requested are Emergency escape life pods that offer a rapid getaway, resist impact, and feature built-in GPS trackers, temperature and fire barrier controls, and air purification systems. Currently in development are Smart floors that track movement but can also be used to control lighting or heating.
There are certainly more lethal devices used aboard some superyachts. According to an eyewitness report in the Sunday Times, "The captain of a superyacht once deployed sonic weapons and 'pain rays' to fend off armed pirates in the Arabian Sea. The captain targeted ear-splitting, high-volume acoustics at the pirates using narrow beams of electromagnetic energy that trigger a burning sensation on the skin. The threat of pirate attacks is all too real. In some areas, such as along the coast of Africa in the Gulf of Aden, it's even expected. Any protective technology worth having will find its way aboard a yacht."
