FAQs about chartering a yacht in Queensland

What is the best time of year to charter a yacht in queensland.

The Whitsunday Islands are a sub-tropical climate with a wet and dry season. The wet season runs from  December to March and the dry season runs from June to August.

The best sailing conditions are considered to be in August and September.

It’s possible to sail the Whitsundays at any time of year, with each season having its own advantages. For example, the wet season has waterfalls and fewer crowds, whereas the dry season coincides with whale’s migrating to the area.

Do I need a license for a Queensland yacht charter?

Queensland’s Whitsundays is one of the only places in the world where you do not need a boat license to hire a yacht without a professional skipper.

Before your charter, you will be given an extensive training session to ensure you can operate the boat safely. If your briefer feels you need additional training or a guide, they will advise you during the session. We also recommend that when making your booking, you express any concerns about your experience to our reservation staff.

How much does a Queensland yacht charter cost?

The cost of chartering a yacht depends on the season, the boat, and the duration.

Costs are determined at a nightly rate, not per head. The longer you charter, the more reduced the nightly rate becomes.

Some of our boats can sleep up to 10 people. In low season, if you split the hire, the average rate per person is approximately $85 a night.  This is comparable if not cheaper than a night in a hotel or staying at a resort, plus the boat includes your transport and entertainment costs.

Can we hire a skipper?

We offer a sail guide service to anyone who would like some additional training or support. Sail guides can be hired for one night or even the duration of your charter.

Choosing the right boat for your crew can be daunting. There is such a great variety to choose from depending on your experience, passenger numbers, and the type of holiday you want to have. And we are more than happy to help you finalise your options!

Whitsunday Escape boasts the largest bareboat fleet in the Whitsundays. The fleet consists of Power Catamarans, Sailing Catamarans and Sailing Yachts ranging from 39 ft to 50 ft, that can take from 2 – 12 passengers. With a diverse fleet of 38 Whitsunday charter boats, we have a boat to suit everyone.

Did you know you can hire a sailing catamaran and not use the sails? The layout of the catamarans might suit you better so they make a great choice for most people. All of our catamarans have twin engines, and some have similar speeds to the power boats.

If we don’t have a sailing boat available for your dates, maybe try a power boat this time, the flybridge is a lovely spot to relax and watch the world go by.

Sleep Aboard Offer

We provide a sleep aboard service which offers you the option of sleeping on board your vessel the night prior to charter departure. Check-in is 4:00pm. This gives you time to provision your vessel, unpack and relax the night prior. Your briefing will commence the next morning on board your vessel at 8:30. You will receive a 10-15 minute sleep aboard brief, which involves a quick orientation of the basics on board such as lighting, electrics and toilets etc. We look forward to greeting you in our office prior to boarding whereby we will quickly complete paperwork. Current Charter Rates

Price list valid to 30 September 2024 inclusive of GST and based on a 5 night minimum hire per boat per night. Prices per night in AU$.

The Pricing for each vessel starts at the Base Rate $ per night. Once you have chosen your dates, seasonal rates and discounts will be applied.

Fuel is not included in the price of your charter. Your Charter vessel is provided with a full tank of fuel. On return from your charter the de-briefer will take you over to the fuel dock where you will top up fuel used to refuel the vessel. Vessels dropped off at Hamilton Island will be fuelled on return to Coral Sea Marina. We will collect your credit card details on arrival and charge the fuel expense to this card. You can expect to use around $20 per day for sailing vessels and between $80 -$120 for power boats. You will need to run the motor for around 3 hours a day to keep your batteries topped-up.

MARINE PARK ENVIRONMENTAL FEES

As the Whitsundays is a Marine Park, Charterers anchorages must be logged and reported to GBRMPA. These Fees are in addition to your Charter Fees. Administration Fees are $37 per person and will be added to your Invoice.

OUTBOARD FUEL AND GAS

All of our vessels are supplied with a Dinghy and our vessels are also supplied with a gas Bottle BBQ on board. The cost of this is in addition to your Charter. Outboard fuel and Gas is $8 per day and will be added to your Invoice.

ACCOMMODATION

Please note that where the Vessel states Max Passengers, this is the number of passengers allowed on board according to the boat survey.

When the Max Passenger numbers on board exceed the number of cabins, the extra Bed is the Drop Down Bed in the Saloon/Dining area, (which is the Dining Table which converts to a bed) which usually accommodates, 2 people, however, on some vessels the Drop-down Bed may only be big enough for a single Adult or a child. (The Forepeak Berths are not in use as cabins.)

The Cabins are double occupancy for couples or friends/children who are happy to share a cabin, there are a few single beds in some of our vessels, however a single person may take a Cabin, or the Drop Down Bed in the Saloon/Dining area.

Please contact our team to clarify the sleeping arrangements during your booking or if you decide to add extra people on board please advise our team in a timely manner to make sure that it is possible to accommodate your extra guests on your vessel.

Please note that recommended number of passengers may differ to Max Passengers as for your comfort on board we sometimes recommend less people for your comfort and privacy, so your guests will each have a cabin and access to a bathroom and frees up the space for Dining.

WHAT IS INCLUDED ON YOUR VESSEL? All of our vessels are fully equipped with: Sheets, pillow cases, 2 bath towels per person (towel packs available for additional cost – 10 towels), tea towels, pillows and blankets, fully equipped galley with all crockery, cutlery and coffee plunger, gas deck BBQ, refrigeration, freezers (on most vessels), cockpit eskies, hot and cold pressure water, TV, dinghy with outboard motor, cabin fans, charter plotters on most vessels, all navigation equipment, depth instruments and wind/speed on yachts and wet weather jackets. TRAVEL INSURANCE:

We strongly advise you are covered by Travel Insurance in case of unforeseen events such as cancellation due to illness, injury or adverse weather (cyclones). 

BAREBOAT HIRER’S LIABILITY INSURANCE

This policy is optional and is designed to protect you from claims made against you for Loss or Damage to Third Party Property, or the Accidental Death, Bodily Injury or Illness of a Third Party.  We recommend Oceanic Marine Risk:  Bareboat Hirer’s Liability Insurance .

DAMAGE WAIVER INSURANCE:

The Damage Waiver is a compulsory, non-refundable payment which will cover against any minor loss or damage to/on the vessel.)

The cost of this is between $250 – $550 depending on the vessel type.

SECURITY BOND ON ARRIVAL:

We require a security bond on your arrival of between $1,000 to maximum $3,000 depending on the vessel type. (This amount must be available on your credit card, as we obtain preauthorization on this). The security bond will cover against any loss or damage to the vessel including groundings, rigging, loss of dinghy or outboard, stuck anchors, blocked heads, prop wraps caused by sheets, moorings, anchor ropes, dock lines, dinghy painters, halyards, floating rope and the removal thereof, chase calls due to charterer (i.e. blocked heads). The bond will be released after completion of your charter if there is no damage to the vessel after the Dive inspection. If there are no deductions from the Security Bond, it will be refunded to the Charterer within 14 days of Redelivery Date.

In the event of any deductions from the Security Bond for insurance excess or consequential credit card or banking charges, demurrage, repair of any damage or loss of equipment, or any accident, breakdown, recall or repossession of the Boat, the balance will be refunded to the Charterer as soon as is reasonably practicable once the repairs are completed or the deduction is calculated, whichever is the latter.

Regardless of clause 13.3, even if the fault is caused or contributed through no fault of the Operator or Charterer (for example, such as striking a marine animal or submerged object) the risk is that of the Charterer’s and the Charterer is not entitled to any refund of Charter Fees and is liable for all damage assessed against the Boat. It is recommended the Charterer takes out appropriate insurance cover for such events.

Please refer to clauses 3.1, 3.6, and 13.5 to 14.4 of the Charter Agreement for further information.

You don’t need to be able to sail to hire a yacht and it can also be affordable. If you can’t sail we can find you a professional Sail Guide to do the sailing for you, leaving you and your guests to enjoy a relaxing, hassle-free vacation. Our Sail Guides have the expertise and local knowledge to take you to all of the best locations including stunning beaches, fishing, snorkelling and diving spots, secluded bays and scenic walks to name a few, making the most out of the Whitsundays on your Queensland Yacht Charter. Your sail guide will require a private cabin and all meals and beverages provided daily throughout the duration of your holiday. The same is applicable if you wish the services of a hostess/cook. If we are able to provide a husband and wife team, only one cabin is required for your crew. Alternatively, two cabins are required. Sail Guide Options: Sail Guide, Half day Sail Guide (Sail Assistance Session), Full day Hostess/Cook per day.

SAIL ASSISTANCE SESSION

If your skills are a little limited or rusty, let us know. As you are the Skipper and you are responsible for the safety and well-being of your crew/family and friends, brushing up on your skills with our Sail Assistance Session is the perfect way to achieve peace of mind, with the confidence and competence that you gain. Your briefer will take you out after the morning briefing for your sail assistance session and provide instruction for around 3 hours after your initial boat briefing. (Basically it’s a valuable extension you can add to your Boat Briefing).

WHAT IS INCLUDED ON YOUR VESSEL? All of our vessels are fully equipped with: Sheets, pillow cases, 2 bath towels per person (towel packs available for additional cost – 10 towels), tea towels, pillows and blankets, fully equipped galley with all crockery, cutlery and coffee plunger, gas deck BBQ, refrigeration, freezers (on most vessels), hot and cold pressure water, dinghy with outboard motor, cabin fans, charter plotters on most vessels, all navigation equipment, depth instruments and wind/speed on yachts and wet weather jackets. Please note: TV’s on the Boats are only for live streaming. Free to Air TV is not available as there are no aerials on the boats.

If your Boat is provided with Air Conditioning, Please note: *Air conditioning on a vessel operates very differently to air conditioning in a house. It requires to either be plugged into shore power or have a generator running.

Wathumba Creek

Known as the Hill Inlet of the Fraser Coast, Wathumba Creek is a magical, picturesque place with all your favourite activities on offer. Snorkel in the creek with turtles, swim in the crystal clear waters, navigate up the creek in the tender, or walk along the white sandy beaches. It is no wonder this is one of the favourite anchorages.

Triangle Cliffs

The coloured sand hills of Triangle Cliffs make for a perfect spot to watch the sunset across the ocean. The stretches of white beach make for a great spot to enjoy a picnic or game of beach cricket.

Moon Point is the closest anchorage to the harbour and provides protection in a variety of winds. The area is full of adventure with close access to Moon Point creek for fishing and crabbing, or Pelican Bank for swimming and relaxing.

Our home port of Hervey Bay and Fraser Island is a short 3 hour drive north of Brisbane, while the local Fraser Coast Airport offers direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne.

The Fraser Coast is Butchulla country and the locals call Fraser Island, K’Gari, which translates to ‘paradise’.
