dannebrog yacht

  • Details and history of Dannebrog
  • The Royal Yacht Dannebrog was built in 1931–1932 and serves as the official and private residence of the Royal Family on summer cruises in Denmark or state visits overseas.
  • The Royal Yacht Dannebrog was named by Queen Alexandrine in Copenhagen in 1931 and hoisted its flag for the first time on 26 May 1932.
  • Dannebrog was built in 1931–1932 at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen as a replacement for the previous royal vessel, the paddle steamer Dannebrog from 1879. The ship’s hull is a riveted steel construction on transverse frames. It has a clipper bow and an elliptic stern. Seen from outside, the Royal Yacht can be divided into two sections, with the crew’s quarters, cargo and the engine placed forward of the funnel.
  • During visits to Danish and foreign ports, the covered quarterdeck is used for receptions.
  • The royal compartment includes The Queen’s study, a dining salon, a lounge, the bedrooms and more. The Queen takes a personal interest in the interior design, furnishings and general outfitting of the yacht. The royal compartment contains furniture and fittings from the previous royal vessel from 1879.
  • The Royal Yacht Dannebrog is an independent command administered by the Captain of the Royal Yacht, who is a member of the Royal Court. Dannebrog’s full crew consists of 9 officers, 7 sergeants, 2 able seamen, 2nd class and 36–39 conscripts, all specially selected from the Navy.
  • Every year in January, a new team of conscripts begin at the Navy’s basic training school in Frederikshavn, where they undergo comprehensive naval training before reporting for duty on board the Royal Yacht Dannebrog in April.
  • The conscripts handle all of the practical tasks on board, such as helmsman or lookout duty while sailing, guard service in port as well as cleaning and polishing of the considerable amounts of brass on the ship, both inside and out. The chefs, bakers and machinists, too, are conscripts with relevant specialised training. After completing their service and training aboard the Royal Yacht, many of the conscripts continue their careers on the Navy’s other ships.
  • The officers are normally seconded for periods of two to four years, while the conscripts stay for just one summer.
  • Since it was put into service in 1932, the yacht has trained approximately 3,300 recruits and travelled more than 800,000 nautical miles.
  • The yacht has visited most of the ports of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It has also called on many European ports, especially in France, and has sailed in the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas and on the American east coast.

Dimensions of the Royal Yacht Dannebrog:

  • Length overall (from the tip of the bowsprit to the back of the stern): 87.4 metres
  • Width: 10.4 metres
  • Draught: 3.9 metres
  • Mast height: 23 metres
  • Main engines: two B&W Alpha Diesel engines, 870 HP each, driving two variable-pitch propellers

A major overhaul was carried out in 1980–1981, which included a replacement of the engine room.

Dannebrog Historical Brief

Introduction.

The Royal Danish Navy ship Dannebrog, officially known as Her Danish Majesty's Yacht Dannebrog, is a historic and iconic vessel that has served as the royal yacht for Denmark since its launch in 1931. Named after the Danish national flag, the Dannebrog has played a significant role in Denmark's royal and maritime traditions, serving as both a royal residence and a symbol of Danish sovereignty and culture. This brief provides an overview of the ship's construction, historical significance, and ongoing role within the Royal Danish Navy.

Construction and Design (1931-1932)

The Dannebrog was built at the Danish naval shipyard in Copenhagen, under the supervision of Lieutenant Commander A.C. Jensen. The ship was designed by the naval architect F.C.H. Münter and was constructed to replace the previous royal yacht, which had been in service since 1879. Laid down in 1931, the Dannebrog was launched on October 10, 1931, and commissioned into service on May 26, 1932.

The Dannebrog is a motor yacht with a sleek, classic design that reflects the elegance and tradition of early 20th-century naval architecture. The ship measures 78.43 meters in length, with a beam of 10.40 meters and a draft of 3.62 meters. Its displacement is approximately 1,238 tons. The Dannebrog is powered by two B&W Alpha diesel engines, which provide a maximum speed of around 13.5 knots.

The yacht is divided into two main sections. The forward section is reserved for the crew, while the aft section houses the royal apartments, including living quarters, reception rooms, and offices for the royal family. The Dannebrog's interior is elegantly furnished, reflecting the ship's status as a floating royal residence.

Early Years and World War II (1932-1945)

Upon its commissioning, the Dannebrog quickly became an essential part of the Danish royal family's life. The ship was used for official state visits, royal tours, and various ceremonial functions. The Dannebrog's presence at international events and its role in diplomatic missions helped to promote Denmark's image abroad and strengthen its international relations.

During World War II, Denmark was occupied by Germany from April 1940 to May 1945. Throughout the occupation, the Dannebrog was laid up in the naval base at Holmen in Copenhagen and did not undertake any voyages. The ship remained under Danish control, and efforts were made to preserve it from potential damage or requisition by the occupying forces. The end of the war saw the Dannebrog return to its role as the royal yacht, resuming its duties and reestablishing its significance within the Danish monarchy.

Post-War Period and Modernization (1945-2000)

After World War II, the Dannebrog underwent several refits and upgrades to modernize its facilities and ensure its continued service. These upgrades included improvements to the ship's navigation and communication systems, as well as updates to its living quarters and onboard amenities. The yacht continued to be an essential tool for the Danish royal family, used for state visits, official tours, and summer cruises.

One of the most notable post-war events involving the Dannebrog was the 1953 state visit to the United States, marking the first time a reigning Danish monarch visited America. King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid used the Dannebrog for part of their journey, underscoring the ship's role in promoting Danish diplomacy and international goodwill.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the Dannebrog continued to serve as a symbol of Danish maritime heritage and royal tradition. The yacht's annual summer cruises around Denmark and the Faroe Islands became a cherished tradition, providing opportunities for the royal family to connect with Danish citizens and visit various parts of the kingdom.

Recent History and Ongoing Role (2000-Present)

In the 21st century, the Dannebrog remains an active and vital part of the Danish royal family's activities. The ship continues to undergo regular maintenance and periodic refits to ensure its operational readiness and preserve its historical character. These efforts have included significant overhauls to the ship's engines, hull, and onboard systems, ensuring that the Dannebrog remains seaworthy and capable of fulfilling its duties.

The Dannebrog's role in state visits and official tours continues to be of great importance. The yacht has been used to host foreign dignitaries, participate in international maritime events, and represent Denmark at significant global occasions. The ship's presence at these events underscores Denmark's commitment to maintaining its maritime traditions and fostering international relations.

One of the Dannebrog's most significant functions is its annual summer cruise, during which the royal family visits various parts of Denmark and its territories. These cruises provide a unique opportunity for the royal family to engage with citizens, support local communities, and promote cultural and historical awareness. The ship's visits to ports and coastal towns are often accompanied by public receptions, cultural events, and official ceremonies, highlighting the close connection between the monarchy and the Danish people.

Cultural and Symbolic Significance

The Dannebrog is not only a functional vessel but also a powerful symbol of Danish heritage and identity. The ship's name, derived from the Danish national flag, reflects its role as a representation of the nation's values and traditions. The Dannebrog's elegant design and historical significance have made it an enduring symbol of the Danish monarchy and its maritime legacy.

The yacht's involvement in state visits and international events also serves to strengthen Denmark's diplomatic ties and promote cultural exchange. The Dannebrog's voyages have taken it to numerous countries around the world, where it has been received with admiration and respect. These visits help to enhance Denmark's global standing and foster mutual understanding between nations.

Preservation and Future Prospects

As the Dannebrog approaches its centenary, efforts to preserve its historical integrity and operational capabilities continue. The ship undergoes regular maintenance and periodic refits to ensure it remains seaworthy and safe for royal duties. These efforts are crucial in preserving the ship's legacy for future generations and ensuring that it continues to serve as a symbol of Danish maritime tradition.

The future prospects for the Dannebrog are promising. The ship will continue to play a vital role in the activities of the Danish royal family, providing a platform for state visits, official tours, and ceremonial functions. Its role as a cultural and diplomatic ambassador will also endure, promoting Denmark's maritime heritage and fostering international understanding.

The Royal Danish Navy ship Dannebrog stands as a testament to Denmark's rich maritime history and its commitment to preserving and promoting its royal traditions. Over its nine decades of service, the ship has been a symbol of Danish sovereignty, a platform for diplomatic and cultural exchange, and a cherished part of the Danish royal family's life. As it continues to sail the world's oceans, the Dannebrog remains an enduring symbol of Denmark's maritime legacy and its dedication to the values of seamanship, tradition, and international friendship.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog’s sailing season

On 12 April 2018, HM The Queen’s Captain of the Royal Yacht hoisted the command flag on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog at Naval Base Frederikshavn. Afterwards, the crew began its floating preparatory school, which continues until the official embarkation on 1 May.

dannebrog yacht

Prior to the official embarkation, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog carries out preparatory sailing training and reconnoitres from the sea in some of the Danish ports and regions the royal family will visit during the year’s cruises aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.

The training school has the objective of educating and routinizing this year’s enlisted crew and the nucleus crew in how to handle forthcoming duties in connection with the year’s cruises. The enlisted crew members have gone through several months of education and training at the Naval School, Centre for Sergeant and Maritime Education in Frederikshavn, under the leadership of, among others, officers and non-commissioned officers from the Royal Yacht Dannebrog’s permanent crew. The crew of the Royal Yacht Dannebrog must be able to handle diverse tasks involved in sailing, safety, ceremonial matters and other things in connection with the cruises.

Over the summer, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog also sails in Danish waters in connection with royal activities and visits. During the entire sailing season, the Royal Yacht is used in various connections, and, among other things, receptions are held on board.

The ship strikes its command flag at the beginning of October, and the ship’s enlisted crew members are either sent home or continue service as permanent Navy personnel. In the wintertime, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog is quartered at Naval Base Frederikshavn, where it is maintained and made ready for the coming season.

Royal Yacht of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark calls St Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, September 6 (Itar-Tass) —— The Royal Yacht Dannebrog, which now serves as the official and private residence for Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and members of the Royal Family when they are on official visits overseas, called Russia’s second largest city St. Petersburg and docked at the English embankment downtown early on Tuesday.

The royal yacht is being accompanied by the Thetis frigate of the Danish Navy and the Russian corvette Steregushchy, which joined the Danish ship in Russian waters.

On Tuesday, the Danish Queen and the Prince Consort begin an official state visit to Russia at the invitation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

It is expected that the Danish Queen will first visit Moscow and the Moscow region, on September 6 through 8, and then the Royal Family will go to St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region.

Later in the day, the command of the visiting ships will meet with governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko and the command of the Leningrad naval base. On Thursday, September 8, Danish naval chief of staff Rear Admiral Finn Hansen will meet with commander of the Russian Baltic Fleet Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov.

Her Danish Majesty’s Yacht Dannebrog was launched by Queen Alexandrine at Copenhagen in 1931, and commissioned on 26 May 1932. The Dannebrog, named after the flag of Denmark, has dual functions: it is primarily the Royal Yacht during peacetime; it can become a hospital ship during emergency alerts or war. A major overhaul was carried out in 1980/81 to extend the life of the yacht beyond the turn of the century. Having now passed that point, the 75-year-old yacht is still in excellent condition, with major improvements including replacement of the yacht's main engines.

This $200 Million Russian Superyacht Could Be Auctioned Off to Aid Ukraine

The 303-footer, known as Royal Romance , was seized in Croatia earlier this year as part of the widespread Western sanctions imposed against Russian individuals and businesses following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Delivered by Dutch yard Feadship in 2015, the custom superyacht features a sleek steel hull and a lightweight aluminum superstructure. Onboard, she has seven staterooms for up to 14 guests and cabins for 21 crew, plus a 39-foot swimming pool with a waterfall that flows over the stern.

ARMA said its representatives had flown to Croatia and “inspected the arrested yacht belonging to the family members of a people’s deputy and one of the leaders of a political force banned in Ukraine.”

Medvedchuk, who is often referred to as the “dark prince” of Ukrainian politics, has led a pro-Kremlin political party in Ukraine for years. He has also been a loyal ally of Putin for the past two decades. The Russian president is even godfather to his daughter Daria, as reported by The Guardian . Medvedchuk has been sanctioned by the US, the UK and Ukraine. He was arrested in Ukraine in April, then handed over to Russia in a prisoner exchange in September.

The auction of Royal Romance would mark the first such sale on behalf of the people of Ukraine. Back in September, a $75 million superyacht that was seized from Russian steel magnate Dmitry Pumpyansky was auctioned off Gibraltar. However, the proceeds went to JP Morgan after a legal claim from the US investment bank said Pumpyansky’s holding company Pyrene Investments owed it more than $20 million. Let’s hope Ukraine sees the funds this time around.

How Royal Romance, a $200-Million Superyacht, Will Benefit Ukraine

Mega yacht Royal Romance is 93 meters long and 14.3 meters wide anchored in Rijeka harbor

Though superyachts are often seen as the frivolous toys of the wildly rich, one named Royal Romance could soon provide more than just a lavish vacation for those who can afford it. According to The Guardian , a $200-million superyacht once owned by Russian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk will soon be put up for auction, with the sale funds going directly to supporting the people of Ukraine.

Medvedchuk, who is currently under sanctions, was arrested in Ukraine in April, though he was sent back to Russia in September through a prisoner exchange. The superyacht was seized in March of this year in Croatia as part of Western-imposed restrictions on the assets of oligarchs. According to the British paper, a Croatian court has recently ruled that the boat can be transferred to a special branch of the Ukrainian government, the Ukrainian Asset Recovery and Management Agency (Arma), and sold at auction to maintain its economic value.

Royal Romance was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and built in 2015 by Dutch shipbuilders Feadship. Seymour Diamond was responsible for the ship’s interiors. Fit to hold 14 guests and 22 crew members, the 318-foot vessel also includes many notable amenities, including a swimming pool, gym, 3D cinema room, and fully equipped spa.

Though multiple superyachts have been seized over the past months, this is the first to be auctioned with the funds going directly to Ukrainian people. In September , a yacht owned by Dmitry Pumpyansky was auctioned off, but the sale went to J.P. Morgan, which claimed Pumpyansky owed the investment firm $21.75 million. Though it’s possible more of the seized  yachts will be auctioned to support Ukraine in the future, as The New York Times reported, seizing and auctioning off assets is rarely a straightforward process. In the United States the Justice Department is working to expedite the process, but it can still take years.
