The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The H12 Racer is an ideal boat for racing.  This boat is designed that with the right wind conditions the boat will get up and plain and be an exciting sail.  In big winds, with all the boats design benefits the boat is an outstanding performer giving any new racing owner the confidence to push the boat to its limits but also with the knowledge the boat is easy to handle in these windy conditions

This new generation of rotor-moulded boat has been designed by Phil Morrison not only to last the rigours of time but to be the most outstanding 12ft (3.65 m) dingy ever designed, with unique sailing benefits and qualities to become in time a world leader. 

We offer a very simple upgrade kit, which includes kicker, ratchet blocks and a racing main which when added to the standard H12 Cruiser changes the boat into a great racing boat. 

The H12 Racer then performs very well to its PY 1250 handicap and with the full race set up this boat is guaranteed to keep new racing sailors entertained and rewarded for their efforts. 

When we sell a new boat, Hartley Boats likes to complete a full boat handover.  Not only to ensure that you understand how to rig your new boat but most importantly that you get the best from your new investment and enjoy sailing the boat and come of the water wanting to return and sail again.

Hartley H12

The H12 is the second in a line of Phil Morrison designed Hartley rotor-moulded boats. The design goal was to build the most STABLE 12ft (3.65m) dinghy. Therefore, a top priority was to have a centreboard instead of a daggerboard, providing comfortable seating, a dry cockpit, and a self-draining floor.

The H12 has a deep floor with plenty of legroom and a very high boom, making tacking and gybing easy. The H12 is equipped with an easy reefing system. As training schools teach capsize drills, the H12 is hard to turtle and empty of water when righted.

Additionally, the boat handles well in big sea conditions and can be sailed by a youth sailor or by one or two adults. A simple jib kit converts this superb single-hander into a double-handed sailing boat.

Designed to give confidence and bring a smile to whoever sails the boat. The H12 is not a boring boat; given the right conditions, it can get up and plane, providing an exciting sail.

• Description

With a wide beam and deep hull shape this little gem is the ideal platform for experiencing the thrills of asymmetric sailing. The sleek hull lines and centreboard configuration result in a fast moving and exciting ride for experienced sailors. While the wide beam and deep hull shape provide a more stable learning platform for beginners.

The Hartley 12.2 can be sailed with one, two or three sails depending on experience, the wind or number of crew. The H12.2 Trainer comes complete with mainsail and jib with the option of also adding a spinnaker.

The deep hull shape enables you to sit-in this dinghy which is a far more comfortable sailing position for adult sailors! The high boom position makes for much better all around visibility. Therefore less bumps on the head for beginners. The attractive hull shape moves swiftly over the water and self drains effortlessly.

The Hartley 12.2 has a centreboard rather than a dagger-board to enable easy launching. Having a centreboard and an easy up-and-down rudder gives this boat a distinct stability advantage over other dinghies of this size and this feature is particularly helpful in shallow water during launching and recovering. The mast comes in two pieces for ease of transport on a car top or road trailer.

The Hartley 12.2 dinghy is a wonderfully comfortable boat to sail. The balance and synergy between the hull and the sail area make it a very stable boat that is less likely to capsize than other boats of this size. However part of the excitement of sailing is the ever present possibility of becoming overpowered by the forces of nature and the inevitable capsize that follows. This very nature of dinghy sailing requires that we must always be able to right a boat after a capsize. Naturally the easier we can do this the safer it will be.

If and when you capsize this dinghy you will be pleasantly surprised at the ease with which you can right it. The buoyancy placement and hull shape result in this dinghy staying in the half way position for a very long time, giving you ample opportunity to get yourself safely into the recovery position. Moreover, even from an in water position it is easy to get onto the centreboard by using the moulded shapes in the hull as hand and foot holds. Once on the centreboard the boat comes upright with minimal effort, even single handed, with the aid of the built in righting lines.

During capsize tests we found it remarkably difficult to make this boat invert. Most importantly the high transom arches and lack of any obstruction at the transom provided a clear and unobstructed escape route should anyone end up under the boat. Moreover, having the mainsail sheeted only from the centre of the boat has a distinct safety advantage because it eliminates the likelihood of entanglement in a stern bridle & mainsheet configuration.

After a capsize, because of it’s unique shape and open transom design, the boat comes upright with minimal water in the cockpit, it can then be safely sailed away on any point of sail to eliminate the small amount of water that remains.

This is a very long, comprehensive video of our Westsail 42, "Sea Rat". GENERAL INFO: Our sailboat "Sea Rat" is a 1978 Westsail 42 cutter. It has the tall rig, 2-spreader mast, great sails, new standing rigging, new chainplates, barrier coated hull, CPT Autopilot, Monitor Windvane, Tigres windlass, and a Yanmar 4JH4-TE diesel engine with 700 hours. You could launch this boat next week and begin a circumnavigation. A UNIQUE FACT: Our Westsail is hull #100. While it is undeniably a boat built in 1978, which makes it 46 years old, the boat has seen drastically less use than its age would suggest. For 30 years the boat was stored, unfinished, in California. The sails and original rigging was stored indoors during this period. This is why the sails, while original, are in such great shape. Essentially, the boat has really only been used for about 15 years of its overall life. It's a bit like when someone finds an old classic car that's been stored in a barn for 30 years. In this way, our boat shows far less wear and tear than you'd expect for a boat of this age. LOCATION: She's currently on the hard in St Mary's, GA in one of the only DIY marinas left on the East coast. It's a great place to keep a boat, especially if you prefer to do your own work, like we do. It is OK if you spend the night on the boat in this work yard. It's already set up with an air conditioner so things stay cool and dehumidified while at the boat. SAILING CHARACTERISTICS: Contrary to mis-guided belief, the Westsail 42 is quite fast, regularly sailing at speeds over 8 knots sustained. She tends to sail at about half the windspeed and does surprisingly well even in lighter winds. She will point at angles closer than 45 degrees to the wind, but does begin to slip rapidly if pressed to sail much closer than that. She's a HEAVY displacement, full-keel sailboat that's fast, capable, safe, stable, and very comfortable in the ocean. She's a wonderful boat.
