Heesen Yachts: Building a Legacy

 • By Diane M. Byrne
 • Updated: December 18, 2020

Heesen Project Cosmos

This past summer, a handful of cranes lifted the massive aluminum superstructure for Project Cosmos into the air at Heesen Yachts , in preparation for joining the superstructure with the aluminum hull. The 1,700-gross-ton 262-footer is the largest yacht by volume and length in the Dutch shipyard’s history.

As exciting as the moment was for those reasons, it was arguably more exciting for the builder’s team because of Project Cosmos’ challenging construction and engineering. Incorporating a shipyard-patented hull component, the yacht is poised to cruise upward of 20 knots and top out at 30 knots.

The excitement in the air may have been reminiscent of a similar scene in 1979, when the 66-foot Amigo launched. Amigo was by far the largest yacht that a Dutch entrepreneur, Frans Heesen, had built. It was also the first yacht under his then-fledgling brand, Heesen Yachts.

Heesen Project Cosmos

With a business background in plastics, he had acquired the Striker Boats shipyard in 1978, initially for other purposes but ultimately deciding to keep boatbuilding operations going. He prioritized constructing aluminum yachts and marrying performance with luxury. In the ensuing years, Heesen Yachts earned a global reputation for both sport-fishing and performance designs.

While Frans Heesen sold the yard in 2008 and retired in 2012, the company hasn’t retreated from its pioneering path. During the past decade, it has delivered about two dozen aluminum yachts between 121 and 230 feet, as well as 18 steel-hulled yachts up to 184 feet length overall. While most have been semicustom and started on spec, Heesen replaces models regularly and is increasingly pursuing fully custom projects.

Heesen Project Cosmos

The builder can work on as many as eight yachts annually and is aiming for a larger share of the supersize-yacht market, with a 279-foot-long dry dock within a 295-foot-long construction shed. And Heesen Interiors recently added 24,000 square feet to its headquarters. The site now encompasses nearly 87,200 square feet. Staffed with draftsmen, cabinetmakers, wood finishers, upholsterers and more, Heesen Interiors is among the few full-service interiors departments under a superyacht shipyard’s ownership.

“It’s a constant evolution at the shipyard to try to stay current—because technology changes,” says Thom Conboy, US director of sales. Building on spec can run the risk of doing things the same way again and again, “but to try to continue to be on the cutting edge with spec boats is a fine balance between innovation and profit.”

Heesen Project Cosmos

A good example of striving for innovation is Heesen’s use of the fast-displacement hull form. Designed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, it reduces hydrodynamic resistance throughout a yacht’s full speed range and reduces fuel consumption by about 15 to 20 percent. Heesen became the first builder to adopt it with the 213-foot Galactica Star in 2013. The hull form is now standard on several of Heesen’s series models in aluminum and steel.

The shipyard also adopted technical advances such as the Hull Vane, another Van Oossanen creation. Like a spoiler on a car, the Hull Vane is a foil, or a wing, that helps to create thrust while reducing drag, pitching and fuel consumption. The steel-hulled Alive, a 139-footer started on spec and delivered in 2014, was the first yacht to use the Hull Vane.

Heesen Project Cosmos

“With these spec boats, we’re not one of those shipyards that set out to build a run of 20, 30, 40 sisterships,” says Mark Cavendish, Heesen’s director of sales and marketing. Heesen limits each series to about 10 to 12 yachts, sometimes even fewer. “Then we’ll stop and redesign and engineer a whole new model. We’re not just taking the hull and tweaking it slightly; we’ll actually tear up the blueprints and settle down and look at what the latest technology can offer owners.”

Then, the Heesen team adds in owners’ ideas. “We’re known to be a flexible yard,” Conboy says. “If it makes sense and helps the sale, we’ll look at it.”

Heesen Project Cosmos

Even with its history of series builds, Heesen is fielding requests for fully custom yachts. Two notable contracts are Project Skyfall and the above-mentioned Project Cosmos. The latter’s quadruple MTU engines totaling 19,000-plus horsepower are expected to deliver a punch that requires rigidity and light weight in the yacht’s construction. Heesen’s in-house solution is a patented structure called the Backbone. Similar to an I-beam, the top of the Backbone runs port to starboard on deck, while the bottom forms the keel. The yacht’s hull spans the middle. Upon delivery in 2022, Project Cosmos should be the fastest all-aluminum yacht of its size.

That’s more than “something fresh in the offing,” as Cavendish describes Heesen’s operations. It’s bound to be a stiff breeze blowing customers’ hair straight out.

Heesen Yachts

Heesen is recognised as a world leader in aluminium construction and our yachts consistently win major awards. Whether it is a steel displacement hull, aluminium semi-displacement hull, or revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull, each yacht is custom-built to the highest standards of luxury and performance. Frans Heesen founded the company that bears his name in 1978. His priority was performance driven by a spirit of innovation. His mission: to build outstanding yachts with exceptional standards of engineering and meticulous attention to detail. Today, Heesen Yachts enjoys a reputation that sets it apart from the rest as a brand synonymous with high-quality shipbuilding and award-winning design.

heesen yachts builders b.v

Specializing in custom superyachts built in aluminum and steel from 100-feet (30m) up to 230-feet (70m), the Heesen brand was founded in 1978 in Oss, Holland. Although these days they are perhaps best known for their displacement motor yachts, Heesen has always been dedicated to pushing the boundaries in design and build. The yard’s founder, Frans Heesen, began his career in the hi-tech plastics industry before moving into yachting. His knowledge, combined with the talented maritime craftsmen and artisans from Holland, led to the use of aluminum in superyacht builds. Today Heesen is leading the way in their efforts to meet owner’s demands for fast but still fuel-efficient large motor yachts by delivering award-winning vessels that combine speed and style.

Brave at Heart

It was Heesen’s pioneering spirit that made Heesen Yachts the only shipyard in the world brave enough to take on John Staluppi’s Octopussy project. This 1985 challenge from the client to any shipyard was to build a large yacht that would travel at more than 50-knots, a speed which at the time was nearly double what any yacht had previously been capable of. Several shipyards declined the challenge, but Frans Heesen decided to take a gamble that his engineering ingenuity would overcome the technical challenges, and the rest is history. The resulting 124-foot (38m) Octopussy was delivered to her owner in 1988, breaking the 50-knot barrier and becoming the fastest luxury yacht in the world. The yard went on to deliver many firsts over the next few decades, including the world’s largest sportfish in 1996 (M/Y OBSESSION), their first steel displacement yacht in 1992, the world’s first Fast Displacement Yacht in 2013 (M/Y GALACTICA STAR), and the first yacht in the world to harness kinetic energy with Hull Vane in 2014 (M/Y ALIVE).

The 2013 built 213-foot (65m) GALACTICA STAR was the first incarnation of Heesen Yachts Fast Displacement Hull Form, developed for Heesen by Dutch naval architects Van Oosanen. Combining a 20-knot cruising speed with a range of 4,200 nautical miles, and a top speed of over 28 knots, Galactica Star is over 30 percent more efficient than a traditional superyacht of the same size. This is due to her efficient hull design. She boasts a 65-foot (19.8m) sundeck, a duplex beach club that occupies 25 percent of the main and lower decks and a touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck.

Following in the footsteps of GALACTICA STAR, the 230-foot (70m) GALACTICA STAR NOVA, delivered in 2016, took the Fast Displacement Hull Form a small step further. With an extra engine on board, she is capable of up to 30 knots. Like GALACTICA STAR, GALACTICA SUPER NOVAIS is not a semi-displacement yacht, and also runs as a displacement hull, whereby the bow pushes the water to either side rather than lifting and planing on top of the water after a certain speed. The main difference being that her hull shape and its entry through the water allows higher speeds with the application of more power. Therefore at 12 knots she still has a range of 4,000 nautical miles, which is comparable with a normal full-displacement yacht. But can still do 30 knots in full throttle. With over 1,000 square feet of deck space, including a vast sun deck and beach club, she is the equal of any conventional full displacement yacht, but with the advantage of long-range cruising capabilities and the ability to go faster than just about any other 230-foot (70.1m) superyacht afloat.

Dedicated to pushing the boundaries in design and build

Forward Thinking

Never keen to rest on their laurels in continuing their pursuit of constant evolution and innovation, the yard has delivered several other ground-breaking designs in recent years, including the 164-foot (50m) full displacement hull form HOME. The first fast displacement all-aluminum build and boasts a reduced environmental impact, thanks in part to her hybrid propulsion system. Previous hybrid yachts have used a diesel electric power base, with expensive lithium-ion batteries for storing excess power produced by the yacht’s diesel generators. But rather than being either all conventional diesel-mechanical or all diesel electric with batteries, HOME offers both. Two shaft-driven electric motors powered by her efficient generators will allow her to efficiently power through the waves at up to 9-knots without using her main engines. Consuming around 26 US gallons of fuel per hour at cruising speeds and just 18-knots at economical speeds, she is as a result, the most fuel-efficient vessel in her class. With main engines running however and more speed required, the electric motors can also be used to provide free electricity to the yacht. Working altogether with everything on full, they can provide a speed of up to 16 knots. Her modern profile boasts a vertical stern that looks radical on the water, while the design throughout is inspired by open-air beach villas. Panoramic glass walls offer unblemished views, while the interior is light and airy, designed to bring the outdoors in.

The state-of-the-art Heesen shipyard spans over 4.4 hectares with nine sheds and five dry docks. Here the team of world-class craftsmen, engineers and designers create the current fleet of Heesen yachts including displacement, semi-displacement and the revolutionary fast displacement hull form. They also offer a complete care service for Heesen’s fleet of yachts throughout their lifetime, with a crew training academy for engineers and deckhands, and a refit service.

“For anyone considering commissioning a superyacht, Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts should definitely be a port of call,” says Northrop & Johnson sales broker Ed Dickinson.

Heesen Yachts maintains a comprehensive database of hull test results for various yacht lengths and shapes as a resource for designers to give clients specific advice on design possibilities based on their preferred length, speed, and seagoing requirements. All Heesen Yachts are engineered and built in-house entirely by hand by master craftsmen. Heesen’s in-house interior specialists work to the highest standards of excellence. Heesen’s Winterswijk shipyard is the site of the main interior workshop where highly skilled craftsmen work on the luxury areas of the interior—atrium, saloon, dining, owner’s stateroom, and guest suites, while the service areas and sky lounges are created in the Oss shipyard. Luxury and exotic materials—teak, wengé, Macassar ebony, stained and curved glass, marble, onyx, and others—are carefully processed by skilled craftsmen to produce the meticulous fit and finish of the luxurious interiors. The backbone of all Heesen yachts is the steel or aluminum hull welded to perfection by extremely skilled and experienced welders. To finish, the metal hull surfaces have several layers of epoxy primer applied and then layers of paint in precisely the right thicknesses for a perfectly smooth, durable finish.

Renowned engine specialist, MTU of Friederichshafen in southern Germany, has been a long-term collaborator with Heesen, building the thoroughly tested engines specifically handcrafted to meet a client’s requirements of speed, economy, and comfort. And for ultimate cruising comfort, the optimal hull form is matched with a rudder and propeller design with exceptional hydrodynamic efficiency. The radical new Promas design by Kongsberg Maritimes eliminates cavitation, a major cause of vibration and noise. Another technology component of Heesen yachts is the patented Hull Vane® developed by Van Oosanen that dramatically improves seakeeping behavior and fuel efficiency. Less power is needed to propel the yacht, allowing smaller main engines, which in turn reduces fuel consumption giving a longer range with the same tank volume—a major advantage.

Heesen offers a Hybrid Propulsion Solution with diesel mechanical or electrical propulsion (or in combination), providing a balance between performance and efficiency. Hybrid propulsion system reduces the vessel’s carbon footprint along with greater power management flexibility, reduced fuel usage, less noise and vibration for greater comfort. Also developed by the Van Oosanen Naval Architects, is the patented Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) designed to move yachts smoothly through water while eliminating vertical movement (heaving), for greater fuel economy and hull speed. FDHF hulls outperform conventional displacement and semi-displacement hulls at low, cruising, and maximum speeds and with 20% lower resistance than hard chine hulls at semi-displacement speeds, according to Heesen Yachts. Seakeeping is improved with optimal performance at all speeds. The FDHF hull is suitable for any type of boat, ship, or yacht.

For owners with a dream yacht in mind, Heesen offers a pure custom build as a one-off creation. A client’s vision will be combined with Heesen’s exceptional standard of engineering and meticulous attention to detail. Heesen teams up with renowned, award-winning architects who succeed in creating an exceptional yacht experience for clients. Freedom of design is melded with a proven development process to ensure a client’s requirements are perfectly aligned with viable design options. Each yacht is hand crafted to bring the owner’s dream to reality while remaining “true to Heesen’s distinguished signature and character.” Although Frans Heesen is no longer actively involved with the company since 2012, Heesen Yachts continues his mission to create yachts that push the limits with the motto, “If you can dream it, we can build it!”

Some of the notable highlights over the years are the 1988 143ft OCTOPUSSY (named after the 1983 James Bond 007 film) with an incredible 50-knot top speed that became the world’s fastest luxury yacht and was Heesen’s breakthrough in the worldwide superyacht industry. In 1996, Heesen introduced its first sportfisherman, OBSESSIONS—the largest at nearly 126ft and most powerful in the world for many years! It is currently in luxury charter operation. Launched in 2011, custom yacht SARTORI won multiple global awards and was the most powerful (24 kts) and largest (50m/164ft) sport yacht ever built in The Netherlands at that time. The 65m/213ft GALACTICA STAR, launched in 2013, was the first of Heesen’s innovative fast displacement (FDHF) yachts and the recipient of 9 awards including the Neptune Trophy at the World Superyacht Awards. In 2014, 139ft ALIVE was the first yacht in the world to harness kinetic energy using the patented Hull Vane® technology to achieve 35% less fuel usage to reach a top speed of 15.9 knots. The 2016 70m/229.5ft GLACTICA SUPER NOVA is an innovative award-winning yacht and the largest Heesen yacht at the time. It features an impressive 357 sq m (3843 sq ft) of deck space!

In 2017, Heesen’s drive to innovate resulted in the Hybrid Solution featured in 163ft HOME for a cleaner, quieter, more fuel-efficient propulsion system that combines diesel mechanical with electrical power. Another breakthrough is the 80m/262ft tri-deck COSMOS, Heesen’s 40th anniversary record-breaking yacht. Her unique power plant of four engines with a combined 19,000+ HP propel her to a top speed of 30 knots making COSMOS the fastest all-aluminum yacht in her class. She features the most advanced naval architecture and Heesen’s incomparable engineering expertise, including the patented Fast Displacement Hull Form and Promas rudders. To ensure structural integrity of an aluminum hull of that length and weight of 4-engine power plant, a new method of construction was developed and patented—the Backbone! COSMOS is scheduled for delivery in Spring 2022.

There are a wide range of Heesen Yachts available in the preowned, global brokerage market. Years range from 1979 to 2017. A 1985 77ft Heesen motor yacht is listed at about $218,000 USD and a 2016 229ft Hessen superyacht is listed at over $86 million USD. Only five Heesen Yachts are located in the USA—ranging from a 1988 custom 105ft Heesen Yacht listed at about $995,000 USD to a 2011 Heesen 180ft superyacht listed just under $40 million USD.
