My Experience: A Review Of Ocean Spirit Cruises To Michaelmas Cay

Author Image

Since making Cairns my home a little over a year ago, I’m grateful to say that I’ve been able to cross off many first time experiences from the old bucket list. Think, scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef , swimming with sharks, and even witnessing a majestic manta ray glide by while snorkelling the Frankland Islands .

One of my biggest highlights in particular; Getting to chill with not one but six green sea turtles as they munched in the shallows on seagrass, and cruised through the coral beds without a care in the world.

Michaelmas Cay has a teeming variety of marine life to delight for hours. If you’re curious about what to expect on a stunning day trip that offers encounters like the one above, then I’ll share with you my experience onboard Ocean Spirit Cruises to Michaelmas Reef.

Jump On Board Ocean Spirit Cruises With Me

Ocean Spirit Cruises Catamaran

Normally, I’m not one for early starts. But when you’re blessed with the good fortune to secure a spot on a day trip out to the reef, there’s a different energy that moves you.

Upon check-in at the Reef Fleet Terminal at Cairns Marlin Marina, I was directed to make my way along the jetty to jump onboard the Ocean Spirit catamaran. Here I was greeted by the friendly crew, decked out in their traditional navy blue and white striped shirts.

After finding myself a seat upstairs on the outside deck and setting up camp for the 2-hour journey to Michaelmas Cay, I grabbed myself some morning tea that was on offer in the main cabin. A mix of blueberry and double choc chip muffins, focaccias, tea and coffee.

The Cruise Out To Michaelmas Cay

Ocean Spirit Biomarine Talk

With the early morning sun starting to warm the day, we set out on glassy waters towards our destination. The crew gave an informative safety briefing before allowing us to freely explore the boat.

Marine Biologist Becky presented an interesting Great Barrier Reef marine bio talk as we passed by Green Island , and I learnt how Sand Cays are formed, much like the one we were visiting inside Michaelmas and Upolu Cays National Park.

Coasting along on the 32 metre sailing catamaran, I ventured out onto the front deck to watch the water change colours from deep blue to turquoise, passing other sandy cays along the way. Looking out on the horizon ahead, I had the brief pleasure of spotting a dolphin pop up for air as it crossed our path!

Paradise Found

Michaelmas Cay Island

We finally arrived at our little slice of heaven on Earth, AKA: Michaelmas Cay. The crew dropped anchor just off shore where crystal clear waters surrounded us on all sides.

To the delight of children and adults alike, the Ocean Spirit squad hosted a fish feeding presentation off the side of the boat to be greeted by a swarm of all sorts of tropical fish fighting for a mid-morning snack.

Ocean Spirit Fish Feeding

From there everyone dispersed into their different activities for the day. I decided to jump on the first glass bottom boat tour at 11am.

Pro Tip: If you want to maximise your time out on the cay and snorkelling the reef, I recommend doing the 11am glass bottom boat tour first thing, then having lunch straight after that. That way you can catch the beach buggy boat over to Michaelmas and enjoy more uninterrupted time out on the cay and the reef before the last beach buggy departs at 2:30pm.

The Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Ocean Spirit Glass Bottom Boat

By doing the glass bottom boat tour first cab off the rank, it was a great way to get a glimpse of what to expect when the time came for snorkelling. Underwater garden beds full of giant clams, big brain corals, soft swaying corals, mellow moorish idol fish and more. Some people even spotted a turtle poppin its noggin above water for air. The tour ran for about 30 minutes before coming back to the mothership.

Lunch Is Served

Ocean Spirit Lunch

We arrived back from the glass bottom boat tour just in time for lunch to be served in the main cabin.

A spread of hot and cold dishes were on offer from 11:30am - 1:30pm. Steamed rice, Japanese pork curry, creamy potato bake, veggie ratatouille, a selection of cold salads and meats, along with fresh bread rolls were all on the menu. Cold drinking water was supplied on tap, while soft drinks and other beverages were available to purchase from the bar.

Michaelmas Cay

Michaelmas Cay Beach

After lunch, I suited up and collected my snorkelling gear (which is included) ready to catch the beach buggy boat over to the cay. Because Ocean Spirit is unable to pull up to the beach, the crew operate a water taxi service that ferries people to and from the catamaran to the cay every 15-20 mins or so.

So even if you did skip the glass bottom boat tour in the morning in your eagerness to go snorkelling, there is a shuttle to bring you back for lunch or to use the bathroom. Yes, it should be mentioned here that there are no facilities on the white sandy island. It’s an important home, sanctuary and breeding mecca for hundreds of migratory seabirds . You’ll see a roped off section on the beach, along with signs requesting not to cross it.

Jumping off the boat and onto the white sandy beach, I immediately fell in love with this place. The crystal clear waters invited me to dive in and explore its underwater gems. You have the options to do a guided snorkel tour with one of the crew members, or simply go on your own adventure.

Michaelmas Reef

Michaelmas Reef

I dropped my towel and water bottle on the beach, grabbed some defog from the crew stationed on the cay, and with GoPro in hand, I set out to see what I could find. Within a matter of seconds, to my extreme delight, I came across my first sea turtle just chilling, munching on seagrass in the shallows.

Michaelmas Cay Green Sea Turtle

As I cruised along the surface I came across more and more of them, which just simply made my day! Completely unphased by the snorkelers ogling them.

Venturing out further to where the abundant coral garden beds started to appear, my eyes were delighted with the sights of giant, multi-coloured clams, curious little clown fish hiding amongst anemones, fluorescent nudibranchs, Christmas tree worms, giant trevally and more sea turtles playfully swimming along the reef!

I returned back to the shore, shed my gear and just simply soaked in the sun until it was time to return to the catamaran. Those of us who were still on the beach loaded up on the last buggy boat, leaving the cay just as we found it.

The Journey Home

Ocean Spirit Beach Buggy Boat

Back onboard the catamaran, the friendly crew collected our snorkel gear and directed us to grab some afternoon tea from the main cabin and relax on deck as we made the journey back to Cairns.

In my experience it was a stunner of a day out on the Great Barrier Reef! With activities like snorkelling, birdwatching, and relaxing on the beach, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

If you're visiting Cairns and looking for a nice chill day out on the reef with the option to visit pristine white sand beaches and snorkelling to your little heart’s content, the Ocean Spirit Cruise to Michaelmas Cay is a great  choice whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple, travelling with friends, or on holidays with family.

About Michaelmas Cay A low lying vegetated sand cay encircled by a spectacular fringing reef, Michaelmas Cay is a National Park and a protected sanctuary for migratory seabirds.

Michaelmas Cay is a small, vegetated sand cay

Located on the western tip of Michaelmas Reef 43km north-east of Cairns and 17km north of Green Island. The vegetated coral reef island covers an area of 1.8 hectares and rises to a height of 3.5m above sea level. Around 360m long x 50m wide.

For a period during the late 1800s and early 1900s the island was used by sea cucumber pickers (Beche-de-mer) and for guano mining. In 1937 it was declared a fauna sanctuary and formally a national park in 1975. The Cay has cultural significance to the local Gungandji, Mandingalbay-Yidinji and Yirriganydji indigenous peoples.

How the Sand Cay formed Michaelmas Cay was formed by the accumulation of broken coral, shells and remains of calcareous algae, continually washed over the reef by currents. Seeds deposited by visiting birds over time, and the resulting vegetation, helped to stabilise the cay. The formation of beach rock (sand and other reef remnants cemented into a rock by the action of algae) further stabilised the cay. The seeds carried in by the birds and the waves help vegetation flourish which in turn provides an ideal habitat for the seabirds to roost and nest.

The Cay is rich with a myriad of sea life including green sea turtles (which occasionally nest on the cay), molluscs and invertebrates of all kinds and hundreds of species of tropical reef fish including Humphead Maori Wrasse. The reef surrounding the Cay is especially renowned for its abundance of giant clams.

Cay Flora The Cay’s vegetation is low growing and composed of grasses including sand spinifex Spinifex sericeus, stalky grass Lepturis repens and other cover such as goat’s foot vine and bulls head vine and Sea purslane Sesuvium portulacastrum.

Access to Michaelmas Cay is only allowed between 9.30am and 3pm daily and is limited to the restricted access area marked out by rope.

A Protected Bird Sanctuary Michaelmas Cay is a major natural seabird habitat and one of the most important in the Southern Hemisphere. It is home to at least 23 species of seabirds. Many breeds find this island an ideal nesting habitat and is one of the most significant bird sanctuaries on the Great Barrier Reef. At the height of nesting and breeding season (during Summer months) up to 20,000 birds have been observed. Breeding activity occurs throughout the year, most of the seabird species breed annually, Sooty Terns breed every 8.5 months.

Daily Departures from Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal Vessel departs at 8.30am and returns at 5.00pm.

Coach Transfers Transfers from most Cairns and Northern Beaches hotels/accommodation are available. Pick up times are advised on booking confirmation.

Certainly a great day, crew supportive. Excellent variety of activities. My first time to the reef, what a magnificent place, thank you so much.

Barbara Barnsley

With perfect weather little could go wrong. I had a wonderful day and particularly thought the crew did all they could to make sure all went well.

John Lamidey

Could not have been better! Helpful, attentive staff, excellent facilities for underwater viewing for novices.

Gillian Smith

Fantastic experience! Staff were friendly and professional. Snorkelling & Submersible experiences Awesome. Possibly in terms of improvement the only suggestion I could add is the buffet is good, but it could be even developed further and key items - eg fish ran out without being replenished. Overall the cruise experience was amazing and will be long remembered!

Georgette Apap

Enjoyed the day, time spent on the reef should have been longer.... not long enough to enjoy the sights.

Carmel Brown

Great stay on the reef

Overall rating.

10 out of 10 for this experience. Not only did we have amazing snorkeling, we had a super fun 5 hours with the entire experience. The food was great, we didn’t expect to eat much with how early it was and we ended up ... eating a bunch. Can’t say enough good things about the crew. They were helpful and knowledgeable. I especially appreciated the passion they had for taking care of the environments we encountered. If you are wondering who to use to snorkel when your in Maui look no further. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

Snorkelling at Michaelmas Cay Snorkelling is fun and a great way to experience the many treasures of the Great Barrier Reef! With easy access from the beach at Michaelmas Cay, people of all ages, whether you’re experienced or a novice, can enjoy the reef, quietly drifting over the myriad of corals and colourful fish. The Cay, with its calm, shallow waters, is ideal for first-timers and young families who want to experience it together. Most of the reef's diversity, around 90% of it, is known to be in the top 4 metres of the water.

A mask, a snorkel and fins are all provided and you’re set for your snorkel adventure on Michaelmas Cay. Our qualified crew are on hand to supervise and show you the basics (if you need them). Buoyancy vests are also provided and will help you stay effortlessly afloat as you discover the world below.

For some great snorkelling tips, make sure to watch the crew’s fun snorkelling demonstration on your journey to Michaelmas Cay too.

Lycra Suits Lycra suits are available for adults and children entering the water, providing sun protection and reducing the possibility of stings and irritations from marine stingers that can frequent tropical waters seasonally. The lycra suits have long sleeves and legs with a hood and mittens. They're a great fun fashion statement and photo opportunity too!

Semi-submersible Coral Reef Viewing Tour Cruising in our air-conditioned semi-sub, seated just one metre below the waterline, you’ll get a diver’s view of the reef without getting wet!

With the large viewing windows, our expert crew provide an informative commentary on the corals and marine life before your eyes as you learn about the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef in this interactive tour.

You’ll be in the midst of beautiful coral formations as we observe a treasure trove of marine life going about their daily life. The reefs surrounding Michaelmas Cay are home to several varieties of spectacular giant clams, sea turtles, giant trevally, hump-headed parrotfish, black tip reef sharks and a magnificent variety of colourful and exotic tropical fish.

Our semi-sub tour takes around 30 minutes and is included in your day at no extra cost so make sure you hop on board to join us for an up close encounter of a very special kind!

Marine Biologist Guided Snorkel Tour If you’d like to learn more about the fascinating marine creatures of the reef, you can join an optional guided snorkel tour with the marine biologist. You’ll be part of a small group as you get an up close and personal insight into this amazing underwater world.

Michaelmas reef is renowned for an abundance of giant clams and sea turtles amongst a myriad of colourful marine life. Just some of the commonly seen marine life you may encounter on the guided snorkel tour include all types of hard and soft corals (there are over 400 types of corals on the Great Barrier Reef!), colourful parrotfish and fusiliers, schooling fish, trevally, clownfish (Nemo!), sea cucumbers and giant clams.

This tour is conducted directly from the beach in the cay’s protected waters. Depending on your level of experience, both beginner and more advanced tours are offered. The tour lasts for approximately 45 minutes and is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together. It’s a great educational experience and most of all a lot of fun!

Optional extra Introductory diving at Michaelmas Cay Explore the reef from a fish’s point of view! Scuba diving is a close encounter of the most unique kind. Glide past stunning coral formations, swim along with schools of fish and discover what’s hiding in the reefs around Michaelmas Cay.

No experience is necessary to take a fully supervised, guided introductory dive and you’ll be able to add another dimension to your reef experience delving beyond what a snorkeller can see in this special underwater world.

It’s fun and easy with one of our professional and experienced instructors by your side who will guide you through every aspect of your dive, allowing you to have a relaxed, enjoyable experience.

The only requirements are that you are over 12 years of age, pass the onboard medical questionnaire and participate in our 30 minute dive brief.

Michaelmas Cay is the perfect dive site for first-timers. The island is wind protected and its waters calm and shallow. Once at Michaelmas Cay, you’ll gear-up and start your dive experience with a skills practice session with your instructor in the shallows of the cay and soon you will be ready for your dive adventure!

At the completion of your first Scuba Dive, you’ll also receive a certificate of recognition and exciting memories to last a lifetime!

If you are considering an introductory dive please see our dive crew on boarding the vessel. Pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment as places are limited.

All equipment, including wetsuits and prescription masks (if required) are included. Multi-lingual diving instructors are available upon request, however it is advisable to contact our office for specific language needs to ensure availability.

Starlink at sea: all change for cruisers

Starlink has shaken up its offering for cruising sailors with a crack down on service term violations and new data plans

Starlink, Elon Musk’s low orbit satellite network which delivers low cost high speed internet via a portable dish, has shaken up its offering for cruising sailors and other broadband users at sea.

Starlink has been hailed as a game-changer by many adopters. Since its launch just two and a half years ago, its coverage has expanded rapidly and many cruisers crossing the Atlantic last season reported full service mid-ocean. Even cruisers in remote Pacific regions have been reporting excellent connectivity while at sea.

In March this year, four American sailors were rescued after their yacht Raindancer sank mid-Pacific in what may well be the first Starlink-enabled rescue. While the conventional rescue communication protocols worked effectively, their rescue was accelerated by the fact that several other yachts on the route were made aware of their plight from browsing Facebook while online, and a Whatsapp group was set up to help coordinate their rescue among boats with fast connectivity (see June issue of Yachting World for the full story).

However, most recreational sailors have been using Starlink Roam, previously known as Starlink RV (‘recreational vehicle’) – a plan designed for those in touring vehicles, off grid cabins etc, who needed connectivity whilst stationary – and, critically, on land. The original dedicated Maritime version was designed for commerical use, with subscription initially costing around £5,000 per month.

Numerous Facebook groups sprang up, populated with instructions on how to ‘hack’ the standard Starlink dish to improve its connectivity on a moving yacht, though Starlink contracts always made clear that using a modified stardard dish and Roam connection whilst sailing was in breach of its warranty and terms of service.

However, over the past couple of week cruisers have been receiving emails from Starlink notifying them that the company is cracking down on this usage:

“Your Starlink has been used in areas that violate the terms and conditions of your service plan: your plan does not include service on the ocean. Starting as early as May 9th, 2023 you will be unable to connect to the internet on the ocean except to access your Starlink account where you can make updates to your account.”

The message then went on to recommend users change their service plan to one of their new, more expensive, ‘Mobile Priority’ plans (though considerably less than the previous Maritime plan).

It’s important to note that this crack down is not a change to Starlink’s usage permissions, the company is only enforcing its existing terms and conditions.

The notifications prompted a flurry of discusssion on the many Starlink user groups, with some joking that it ‘felt like Y2K all over again’, and concerns that connectivity would be cut off instantly at 0000hrs on May 9 (that wasn’t the case, although some customers have received repeated emails and connectivity warnings).

Starlink maps service areas into 15 mile cells, shown on its service maps as blue and black hexagons, determining whether that area is ‘land’ or ‘ocean’, marked in ‘blue’ and ‘black’ respectively. If the satellite technology detects that the dish is being used in a black hexagon it will consider you to be on the ocean. There are, unsurprisingly, a few anomalies – islands and promontories etc which have not been recognised as land etc.

Starlink advised Roam users instead move to one of their Mobile Priority plans. However, in a pattern that will be familiar to anyone who’s followed Musk’s rapid-fire changes at Twitter, those policy options went through a series of updates and different pricing plans over the past week.

One possible solution for cruising users may be to subscribe to a Priority data plan which can be ‘toggled’ on and off as they move between land and ocean areas – although some users report that even after toggling ‘off’ they were still using data from the more expensive Priority plan.

Whilst many RV/Roam users have successfully used Starlink’s standard dish whilst in motion, Starlink now offers a dedicated ‘in motion’ option using a higher performance dish. The website currently shows Starlink Martime and Starlink Mobility packages from £247 per month with a hardware cost of £2410, though there are some hefty discounts currently being promoted to existing standard dish owners on new hardware costs

What’s not yet clear is whether the geo-locating technology considers being on anchor or in a marina as stationary or in motion. One email shared on a user group, apparently from Starlink customer service, says:

“You do not need the high performance dish to use in-motion service. However, using the regular dish in-motion voids the warranty, as it wasn’t deigned or built for in motion use. In motion means moving…. A boat at anchor is considered in motion. The bobbing motion will trigger the motion sensors in the dish.

“The non high perforamnce antennas may be used in motion now, and in the forseeable future. We do not anticipate removing this capability. A reminder however that they weill be out of warranty if used in motion.”

However, confusing, Starlink’s own FAQ page , under “Can I use Starlink in motion?”, advises:

“Flat High Performance Starlink is only available to be purchased in certain regions. If your account country is outside these regions, you can use your current Starlink hardware paired with the Mobile Priority data to access prioritized service globally on land and in the ocean while stationary.” [our underline]

User groups advise contacting Starlink direct if, for example, you want to use non-priority data while in port and only occasional in-motion priority data for an ocean passage. Options and restrictions also depend on which region cruisers purchased their dish in, and which address their data plan is registered to.

The other consensus among user groups seems to be that, unless you need seamless high speed connectivity because you are running a business whilst cruising or similar, not to rush to replace hardware or sign up for new data plans as they are rapidly evolving.
