At Least 13 Dead After Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Northern France

Calm sea

(PARIS) — A boat carrying migrants ripped apart in the English Channel as they attempted to reach Britain from northern France on Tuesday, plunging dozens into the treacherous waterway and leaving 13 dead, officials said.

“Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open,” said Olivier Barbarin, mayor of Le Portel near the fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where a first aid post was set up to treat victims. “It’s a big drama.”

He said 13 migrants were killed, a toll confirmed by a maritime rescue official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of the operation.

“If people don't know how to swim in the agitated waters ... it can go very quickly,” the mayor said.

Lt. Etienne Baggio, a spokesman for the French maritime prefecture that oversees that stretch of sea, said “more than 10” people were dead after the boat broke up but he didn’t have an exact number.

The officials said rescuers recovered 61 people from the waters. The prefecture said the boat got into difficulty off Gris-Nez point between Boulogne-sur-Mer and the port of Calais further north.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said he was heading to the scene of what he described as the “terrible shipwreck.” He said 12 people died and two were missing, a count he said was provisional.

Sea temperatures off northern France were around 20 degrees C, or about 68 F.

At least 30 migrants have died or gone missing while trying to cross to the U.K. this year, according to the International Organization for Migration. That figure doesn't include the latest deaths.

At least 2,109 migrants have tried to cross the English Channel on small boats in the past seven days, according to U.K. Home Office data updated Tuesday. The data includes people found in the channel or on arrival.

Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rule s, growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants have been pushing them north.

Associated Press writer Lorne Cook in Brussels contributed.

Sicily Yacht Sinking: Why $4 Billion Lawsuit Against Mike Lynch Is Moving Forward After His Death

After mike lynch died aboard the yacht that sank off the coast of sicily, hewlett packard enterprises revealed it still plans to pursue its billion-dollar lawsuit against the late tech mogul's estate..

Mike Lynch 's widow could inherit his billion-dollar lawsuit.

Less than a month after the businessman died aboard the luxury yacht that sank off the coast off Sicily , Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE)—who filed a $6.5 billion claim against the former Autonomy CEO and Autonomy's former chief financial officer Sushovan Hussain in the U.K. in 2015—revealed it will continue to pursue damages of up to $4 billion from Lynch's estate, according to a statement from HPE that was obtained by E! News Sept. 4.

The decision to move forward with the legal case comes after Britain’s High Court ruled in 2022 that Hewlett Packard “had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims,” per the company's statement.

And Hewlett Packard—which accuse Lynch and Hussain in their lawsuit of fraudulently over-valuing Autonomy when selling it to the company for $11 billion in 2011—was confident that the judge's "decision regarding damages" will be issued "in due course."

However, the court's final decision has yet to be made, and Judge Robert Hildyard previously said he expected the amount Hewlett Packard will win in damages to be "substantially" less than what the company sought, per AP. (Lynch was also notably acquitted in a separate U.S. trial related to Autonomy's sale months before he boarded the Sicily yacht.)

Still, if Hewlett Packard wins the case, Lynch's wife Angela Bacares —who was rescued after the sinking that killed her husband and their 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch —could be the one stuck paying for the damages if she is the beneficiary of his estate.

E! News reached out to a rep for the Lynch family for comment but has not heard back.

Bacares, Lynch and their daughter were three of the 22 total people—12 guests and 10 crew members—aboard the 184-foot Bayesian yacht when it sank Aug. 19 off the coast of Sicily, Italy —an incident that maritime experts have described as anomalous.

The tragedy, which occurred due to harsh weather conditions, left five others dead in addition to Lynch and Hannah: cook Recaldo Thomas , spouses Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo , as well as Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer .

Following the boat's sinking, the ship's captain, James Cutfield , became the subject of an investigation for manslaughter, his lawyer confirmed to NBC News. He has yet to be charged with any crime, and the investigation does not suggest that any charges will follow.

As for Bacares, her surviving daughter Esme Lynch has since spoken out about the immeasurable loss they feel over the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

"She is my little angel, my star," Esme said of her younger sister in an Aug. 25 statement to Sky News . "She had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals."

Six children and pregnant woman among 12 dead in deadliest migrant boat tragedy this year

Six children and a pregnant woman were among at least 12 migrants who died on Tuesday when their boat was “ripped open” during the deadliest attempted Channel crossing this year.

More than 53 survivors were plucked from waters off Gris-Nez point, between Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer, during a major air and sea rescue operation.

A nearby rescue vessel was joined by two fishing boats, a French Navy vessel and local lifeboats.

Home secretary Yvette Cooper described the incident as “horrifying and deeply tragic”, saying that French services “undoubtedly saved many lives, but sadly could not save everyone”.

Before the latest tragedy at least 30 people have died or gone missing while trying to cross to Britain this year, according to the International Organisation for Migration – up from 24 in 2023. More than 2,100 people have arrived in Britain on small boats over the past seven days, according to official UK figures, taking the provisional total this year to 21,403.

Bodies of migrants who died attempting to cross the Channel are brought ashore in Boulogne-sur-Mer, northern France, on Tuesday

Almost 70 migrants were crammed into a vessel only 23 feet (seven metres) long when it got into difficulty in open waters.

“Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open,” said Olivier Barbarin, mayor of Le Portel, near Boulogne-sur-Mer, where a first aid post was set up to treat victims. “If people don’t know how to swim in the agitated waters ... it can go very quickly.”

Border security and asylum minister Dame Angela Eagle said: “It is a worrying trend that boats are being filled with many more people than we have seen in past times. And also the quality of boats is deteriorating, so these crossings are getting more and more dangerous as time goes on.

“They’re always dangerous, this is a very, very busy shipping lane, but the danger and the risk seem to be rising and today’s tragic incident is a representation of that.”

Of those who died on Tuesday, half were children, Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor Guirec Le Bras told reporters. He added that 10 of them were female and two were male, with most of the migrants coming from Eritrea. A pregnant woman was also among the dead, the Boulogne-sur-Mer mayor Frédéric Cuvillier told the BBC at the scene.

Labour has vowed to “smash” the people-smuggling gangs behind the crossings, in part through increased cooperation with other European nations.

Cumulative arrivals of people crossing the English Channel in small boats

Ms Cooper moved to establish a new Border Security Command in her first days in office, while last week, Keir Starmer and French president Emmanuel Macron pledged to work together more closely to dismantle migrant smuggling routes.

Labour also scrapped the Conservative government’s “small boats” scheme – designed to send those who arrive in the UK on the vessels to Rwanda – within days of coming to office.

Ministers denounced the policy as a “gimmick” that had failed in its central aim – to deter the journeys.

But former home secretary James Cleverly called for the Rwanda plan to be reinstated in the wake of the deaths.

“This is tragic and it cannot continue,” he tweeted. “It is not enough to talk about smashing the gangs when the real-life consequences are so serious. Labour must re-establish the deterrent that the NCA said we need to stop vulnerable people being exploited and secure our border.”

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, said there had been a “shockingly high” number of deaths in the Channel this year and the “devastating trend shows the urgent need for a comprehensive and multi-pronged approach to reduce dangerous crossings”.

Some survivors were brought in to Dover on Tuesday

“Enforcement alone is not the solution,” he added, calling on ministers to open up more safe and legal routes for asylum seekers.

The British Red Cross said: “Nobody risks their life travelling across the Channel in a small boat unless they feel they have no other choice.”

Steve Smith, CEO of refugee charity Care4Calais, said: “One life lost in the Channel is too much, but this year these tragedies have occurred with much more frequency and that is a deeply worrying trend that needs to be stopped.”

He added: “Every political leader, on both sides of our Channel, needs to be asked how many lives will be lost before they end these avoidable tragedies. Their continued obsession, and investment, in security measures is not reducing crossings, it is simply pushing people to take ever-increasing risks to do so.”

Nadine Tunasi, of the charity Freedom From Torture, said: “I know from the survivors I work with that no one gets into an overcrowded and unseaworthy dingy to cross one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes without a desperate need to find safety.

Bodies of dead migrants are brought ashore in Boulogne-sur-Mer

“Too much time has been wasted on gimmicks and hateful politics, while conflict continues to push people to take dangerous routes to sanctuary.”

French interior minister Gerald Darmanin went to Boulogne-sur-Mer to meet rescuers at the scene.

“We absolutely must – and this is a very important point – re-establish special relations with our British friends,” he said, calling for harmonised immigration legislation between Britain and France.

Olympic Breakdancer Raygun Issues Apology to Entire Breakdancing Community for Controversial Performance

Olympic breakdancer Raygun apologizes to the entire breakdancing community for her controversial performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games last month.

Raygun Apologizes to Breaking Community

On Wednesday (Sep. 4), Olympic breakdancer Rachel Gunn, who goes by her b-girl name Raygun, sat down for an interview with the Australian talk show The Project to discuss the blowback she experienced following her controversial performance in Paris. Host Waleed Aly read a few of the criticisms off to Raygun, including one from Australian rap pioneer Spice, who blamed Raygun for pushing the breaking scene back "into the dark ages."

"Yeah, look it is really sad to hear those criticisms," Raygun began around the nine-minute mark of the video below. "I am very sorry for the backlash that the community has experienced, but I can't control how people react. Unfortunately, we just need some more resources in Australia for us to have a chance to beat world champions. Historically, unfortunately, we haven't had the best track record of winning world championships, so I don't think that's just on me."

Raygun also responded to the online conspiracies that exploded in the wake of her performance, including one that claims her husband and coach Samuel Free rigged the selection process.

"The conspiracy theories were just awful," Raygun said. "That was upsetting because it wasn't just people who didn't understand breaking and were just angry about my performance, it was people now attacking our reputation and our integrity. None of them were grounded in any kind of facts and obviously they're still circulating."

When asked once and for all how she qualified for the Olympic games, Raygun said, "I won the Oceania Championships. It was a direct qualifier."

Raygun backlash explodes after performance.

Raygun went viral at the Olympics for doing what some people described as kangaroo hops and rolling around on the ground.  As a result, the performance was met with both uproarious clowning as well as seething hatred around the internet. Social media wasn't letting up with the memes. Tweets mocking her like "'These edibles ain’t working!'" along with the words "*15 minutes later*" to compare Raygun's moves to the effects drugs have on the body were posted.

Many people questioned how she could have possibly qualified for the Olympic games, and matters were made worse after a viral petition began circulating around the internet, which accused Raygun of "unethical conduct." The petition accumulated over 28,000 signatures before being taken down.
