Valet Yacht Services Ltd is the result of combined efforts from two industry veterans: Stratos (Stan) Taliadouros and Patrick Nykilchuk.

Stratos, who also goes by his anglicized name Stan, began his career in the marine industry in the late ‘90s with his repair company called Stratos Yacht Services.

During its 20 years of business, Stratos worked on small and large yacht refits and repair. He has expertise with fibreglass, gel coat, and, in particular, yacht painting. His focus on yacht painting led him to become one of the leading yacht painters in BC and North America, painting vessel from 25ft up to 145ft.

Patrick began his marine career as a sailing instructor in the early ’90s before moving into managing and, in some cases, partially owning charter companies such as Seawing Sailing, Safari Sailing and Cooper Boating. His passion for customers and boat owners lead him to help develop and refine systems for a better customer and boat owner experience.

Over the obligatory pints that sailors enjoy in the pub, Stratos, Patrick and a fellow boat owner talked about how to introduce a better customer experience into a repair company. The general consensus was that improved communication and transparent pricing would go a long way to create a better customer experience.

Valet Yacht Services Ltd. prides itself on having informed discussions with clients and providing a fair estimate to help plan a realistic budget. Communication is key throughout the process. Valet Yacht Services provides regular updates via phone and email, and we also document with quality control forms, pictures and videos so the client understands the process. If an unexpected condition requires repair appears, Valet will have a discussion with the owner to ensure they understand the pros and cons of proceeding. The owner then approves or declines in writing. This creates a clear path to the completion of the project. It’s been our experience that customers truly appreciate the process and feel comfortable spending the money required to keep their boats running and looking great!

Boat owners have choice as to where they take their vessels to get serviced. Valet Yacht Services Ltd is proud to offer a boutique experience to our customers but with a management team that has over 35 person years of experience in the marine industry. We can repair and paint your fibreglass, carbon fibre or metal vessel. We use top of the range Alexseal coatings in all our projects. We can help ensure you spend more time enjoying your boat on the water, rather than visiting it in the yard.

Let’s talk today about how we can help you with your project.

News Wrap: Golan Heights damaged by Hezbollah rocket attack on Israel

In our news wrap Wednesday, Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets toward Israel, Congo health authorities reported more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week, divers recovered five more bodies from the luxury yacht that sank off Sicily’s coast, Russia says Ukraine launched a large drone attack on Moscow, and revised data showed the U.S. economy added fewer jobs than previously reported.

William Brangham:

Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets towards Israel today, some causing damage in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Israel's ambulance service reported the projectiles hit several private homes and injured one person, causing alarm among community members.

Einav Perez, Golan Heights Resident (through interpreter):

Some of the residents want to leave. Others are patriots who want to stay. But it cannot continue this way. Every sound of a door shutting makes us think it's a boom. This time, it wasn't a door, but a serious boom that cost us a lot.

Hezbollah says the barrage was in response to Israeli airstrikes deep inside Lebanon.

Residents of one Lebanese village held a funeral today for a man they say was killed in an Israeli attack. It comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with mediators in the region to push a proposal aimed at bridging the gaps in the Gaza cease-fire talks. Egyptian officials reportedly expressed skepticism today that Hamas would in fact accept that proposal. Talks are expected to resume in Cairo tomorrow.

Health authorities in Congo say they have recorded more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week amid an urgent need for vaccines. Congo accounts for more than 90 percent of the cases reported in Africa so far this year. Last week, the WHO classified the outbreak as a global health emergency.

African officials say Western nations in Japan have pledged several hundred thousand vaccine doses, but Congo's health minister says the country alone needs some three million doses to control the outbreak.

In Italy, divers found five more bodies while searching the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday. Recovery crews unloaded body bags from a rescue vessel in Porticello. They're still searching for one final missing person. Fifteen other passengers and crew escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued.

Authorities say they believe the British-flagged Bayesian, seen here in file video, was struck by a tornado on the water, which is known as a water spout. But questions remain as to why the yacht sank so quickly.

Russian officials say that Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow last night since Russia's invasion in 2022. Russia claims to have struck down 45 drones, including 11 over Moscow itself. There has been no independent verification of those figures.

That comes as Ukraine digs in to defend the city of Pokrovsk in Eastern Ukraine from Russian advances. Its capture would be an important victory for Russia, as Ukraine pushes forward with its own incursion further north in Russia's Kursk region.

In Moscow today, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Ukraine's military advances there undermine any chances for peace talks.

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman, Russian Foreign Ministry (through interpreter):

Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, infrastructure and peaceful facilities?

Ukraine's military claims to have taken nearly 500 square miles in Kursk since it first entered Russian territory earlier this month.

Back here in the U.S., the economy added far fewer jobs last year and into 2024 than previously reported. In its revised data out today, the Labor Department said that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created between April of last year and this March. That's an average of 174,000 jobs per month, far fewer than the 242,000 that was initially reported. This downgrade follows a disappointing report last month and comes as the U.S. Federal Reserve considers whether to cut interest rates next month.

On Wall Street today, stocks ended slightly higher after the Fed raised hopes of an interest rate cut next month. The Dow Jones industrial average added 55 points, inching closer to the 41000-point level. The Nasdaq tacked on more than 100 points for a ninth win in 10 sessions. The S&P 500 also ended higher on the day.

And we have two passings of note.

New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. Died earlier this morning. The 14-term Democrat was a fixture of his hometown of Paterson, where he had served as mayor, before running for Congress in 1996. Pascrell was a long time advocate for emergency responders and sat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. No cause of death has been announced, but he had been in and out of the hospital for months.

Congressman Bill Pascrell was 87 years old.

Also today, NBA Hall of Famer Al Attles has died. As one of the first Black head coaches in the league, Attles led the Golden State warriors to a championship in 1975. Attles, seen here defending a pass in 1963, was known as the Destroyer for his particularly physical style of play.

He spent six decades with the Warriors as a player, a general manager, and team ambassador. It is the longest stint by a player with the same franchise in NBA history. Al Attles was 87 years old.

Tech mogul mike lynch and daughter reportedly found dead in wreck of yacht bayesian off italian coast — as authorities recover 5 bodies from hull.

The bodies of Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter have been recovered from the wreck of the UK tech mogul’s sunken yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily, according to reports Wednesday.

Authorities have recovered the bodies of five of the six missing passengers aboard the $18 million luxury sailing ship, which sank in a sudden storm before dawn on Monday, according to authorities.

Mike Lynch, former CEO of Autonomy Corp, leaving the Rolls Building in London, England after giving evidence in a $5 Billion fraud trial.

Lynch and daughter Hannah have been identified as two of the victims pulled from inside the wreckage, which is in 160 feet under water,  according to the UK Telegraph .

The identities of the other three bodies have not been confirmed, though the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that two of the bodies are “large-built” — indicating they could be the missing men.

Cook Ricardo Thomas’ body, the first confirmed fatality, was discovered shortly after the Bayesian sank.

Including Lynch and his daughter, the missing passengers on the yacht are: New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, Morgan Stanley exec Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 others — including a 1-year-old child — managed to escape the sinking ship before it capsized.

Two bodies have been found inside the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht as divers search for the four others.

All of the guests had gathered onboard the Bayesian to celebrate Lynch’s victory in an explosive US fraud trial. His guests included lawyers from the firm that represented him, as well as friends and allies who supported him through the legal battle.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily, leaving five dead and two missing:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing three passengers and leaving three others missing.
  • The first two bodies found inside the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht were identified as British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter Hannah, according to a report.
  • Two more bodies have been recovered but have yet to be identified.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it slowly disappearing.
  • Italian authorities have said the chances of the remaining passengers surviving the disaster were very small, but “never say never.”
  • A r are and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian superyacht’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The wealthy tech founder — who was once dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates” — was acquitted just two months ago by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges linked to the sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. The sale quickly turned sour after HP wrote down Autonomy’s value by $8.8 billion.

The bodies were not immediately identified, though a source told the outlet one was a "heavy-built man."

The British-flagged Bayesian superyacht was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members as it was anchored off the port of Porticello and struck by what witnesses described as a sudden tornado .

Several search boats could be seen leaving the port of Porticello to go to the site of the sinking around 3:30 p.m. local time Wednesday as news of the latest discovery was shared, according to the reports.

Morning Briefing: Asia Pacific Edition

Thursday briefing: russia says ukraine aimed drones at moscow.

Plus, China’s “road-trip auntie.”

Justin Porter

By Justin Porter

A military vehicle goes down a street with badly damaged buildings on both sides.

Russia says Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow

Russia said it repelled a drone attack against Moscow yesterday, as Ukraine presses on with its offensive in Russia’s southern Kursk region. The Russian authorities did not report any damage or casualties, saying 10 Ukrainian attack drones were destroyed by the capital’s air defenses.

A Washington-based think tank said Ukraine was making marginal advances within Russia. Footage showed that Ukrainian troops had entered the outskirts of Korenevo, a town of about 5,000 people, and pushed into two more villages. Russian forces are trying to install pontoons to cross a section of the Seym River after Ukraine destroyed several bridges.

President Vladimir Putin has promised a decisive response to Ukraine’s incursion, but so far there has been more focus on containment than retaliation. Russian forces have slowed Ukraine’s advance and hardened the front line, setting up the next phase of a battle with high stakes for both sides. Instead of weakening the Kremlin, the invasion may eventually cause more Russian citizens to rally around the flag , some analysts said.

Context: Drone assaults away from the front lines have become a feature of the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukraine also said it had intercepted 50 Russian drones over its territory overnight.

Israel and Hezbollah trade strikes with talks stalled

The Israeli military and Hezbollah traded cross-border strikes yesterday, as months of diplomatic efforts have failed to ease hostilities.

Israel said that it had struck weapon-storage facilities used by Hezbollah. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 30 others, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said. Hezbollah said it had responded by targeting an Israeli base in the Golan Heights, which Israel said had caused at least one injury.

Diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war in Gaza are at a standstill, despite hopes from the U.S. that a new proposal could break the deadlock. In broad terms, the U.S. proposal appears to conform to demands by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israeli troops continue to patrol part of Gaza along the border with Egypt. Here’s what we know about the proposed deal .

An Israeli strike on a school turned shelter in Gaza City killed at least two people, according to Gazan emergency services. Here are other key developments in the war .

🇺🇸 U.S. ELECTION 2024

The presidential election is less than 80 days away. This is what we’re watching.

Changing the message on Trump

Kamala Harris and her allies are crafting a new approach to Donald Trump. Democrats have portrayed him as a dangerous villain, a racist and a threat to democracy. Now, they’re trying something else — deflating him.

Harris and her allies have argued at the Democratic National Convention that Trump is a meanspirited fraud who is playing a long con on the American people. They are depicting him as a fake working man’s populist and an anti-union “scab.”

The strategy is designed not just to earn applause but to win votes, eroding Trump’s support among the undecided and mostly white middle-class voters in three states that are likely to decide the election: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

On Day 3 of the convention, taking place on Wednesday night in the U.S., the jovial, blunt-spoken Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, will speak to the largest audience of his political career, as he formally accepts the nomination for vice president. Bill Clinton is also expected to take the stage.

Here’s what else to know:

Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, are in North Carolina for Trump’s first outdoor rally since an assassination attempt. He will be shielded by bulletproof glass .

The ascension of Harris has unleashed a gusher of political donations to Democrats .

Michelle Obama’s militaristic sleeveless outfit suggests this election will be a fight , our fashion critic writes.

Moscow sees one of Ukraine's largest drone attacks as fighting rages in Kursk and eastern Ukraine

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, Russian authorities reported Wednesday, saying they destroyed all of those headed toward the country's capital.

MOSCOW — Moscow came under one of the largest attacks by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, Russian authorities reported Wednesday, saying they destroyed all of those headed toward the country's capital.

The attacks came as Ukrainian forces continue to push into Russia's western Kursk region. In the past week, they have also struck three bridges, several airfields and an oil depot in a sign they are not letting up on their attacks.

Late Wednesday, the governor of Russia's Bryansk, which borders both Kursk and Ukraine, said Russian forces turned back a Ukrainian attempt to enter that region.

Governor Alexander Bogomaz identified the Ukrainian forces as a ''sabotage and reconnaissance group'' but did not specify if they were part of Ukraine's military. He said on the Telegram channel that the attempted incursion was in the area of Klimovo, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of the section of Kursk held by Ukrainian forces.

''This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones,'' Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram. Strong defenses around the Russian capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets, he said.

Russia said it downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 11 over the Moscow region. There was no independent information to verify those figures. Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defense systems, which then set off car alarms.

Ukrainian drone strikes have brought the fight far from the front line into the heart of Russia, targeting Moscow and Russia's second city St. Petersburg, as well as an airport in western Russia, according to Russian officials.

Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has stepped up aerial assaults on Russian soil, targeting refineries and oil terminals to slow down the Kremlin's assault.

A fire at an oil depot targeted by Ukraine burned for the fourth day Wednesday in Rostov, a region in southwestern Russia that borders Ukraine. Priests from the Russian Orthodox Church held prayers for injured firefighters as dark plumes of smoke rose from the depot in Proletarsk, according to a photo shared on social media by the Volgodonsk diocese.

Ukraine's daring land incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting. But it is also risky — Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched, with fighting underway along a stretch of over 970 kilometers (600 miles). The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine'sincursion started Aug. 6, figures that are impossible to verify. It said 143 people were injured, of whom 79 were hospitalized, including four children.

A Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive device on a car in the Bolshesoldatsky area of Kursk, slightly northeast of the town of Sudzha, the acting governor Alexei Smirnov said. One woman was killed and two others were hospitalized, he said.

Russia's Central Electoral Commission announced that local elections in six districts and one city of the Kursk region scheduled for Sept. 8 will be postponed and rescheduled when voters' safety can be guaranteed.

Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said Ukraine's attack on Kursk has ended ''any possibility'' of peace negotiations.

''Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, civilian infrastructure and peaceful facilities,'' she told reporters Wednesday in Moscow.

Ukraine said it was respecting the Geneva Conventions, the international humanitarian rules of war. Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the Ukrainian military established an office in the Kursk region to provide humanitarian and medical aid to the local population. More than 90% of Russian civilians who stayed in Kursk territory currently controlled by Ukraine are age 60 and older, he said.

''We have no right to leave them there to die," Klymenko said, according to the Ukrinform national news agency.

Ukraine's attacks on three bridges over the Seym River in Kursk could potentially trap Russian forces between the river, the Ukrainian advance and Ukraine's border. Already they appear to be slowing down Russia's response to the Kursk incursion.

Ukrainian forces seem to be striking Russian pontoon bridges and pontoon engineering equipment over the Seym in an area west of the Ukrainian advance point, the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said Tuesday.

Satellite photos from Planet Labs PBC analyzed Wednesday by The Associated Press show a significant fire on the Seym, near the village of Krasnooktyabrskoe.

The blaze appeared on the northern bank of the river on Tuesday, with another fire seemingly in the village itself. Such fires are common after strikes and often signify where ongoing front-line combat is taking place.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had thwarted attack attempts by Ukrainian assault groups in the Kursk region, according to a report from Tass. Ukraine's armed forces saw more than 45 soldiers killed or wounded over the past 24 hours, and two were captured while attempting to attack the Kursk region, Tass said. There was no independent confirmation of those numbers and no comment from the Ukrainian side.

In other developments:

— A Russian prosecutor's office has filed a request at the military court in Rostov-on-Don asking for sentences of 16 to 24 years in prison for 23 Ukrainian prisoners of war. They're accused of terrorism and actions aimed at violent seizure of power. All served in the Ukrainian Azov battalion, including nine women who mostly served as cooks.

— An AP analysis of drone strike data by Ukraine's armed forces shows that missiles and drones have consistently been launched from Russia's Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the aim of the Kursk operation was to create a ''buffer zone'' to better protect Ukraine from Russian attacks.

Associated Press writer Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, contributed to this report.

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks yet by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, further rattling Vladimir Putin as he attempts to fight Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.

The Ministry of Defence claimed that Russia downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 11 destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel: ‘This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones.’

He said strong defences around the capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets.

Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defence systems, which then set off car alarms.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, reported a ‘mass’ attack on his region but that 23 drones were destroyed.

The moment the Russians shot down a Ukrainian UJ-22 kamikaze drone with a 500 miles range.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Europe in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been attacking Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential, and has also targeted the capital several times.

The drone attacks come as Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia’s western Kursk region.

The daring incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting.

A major kamikaze drone strike by Ukraine on capital Moscow

But it is uncertain how long Ukraine will be able to hold the territory it has seized in Kursk.

It has also opened up another front in a fight where Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched.

The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.

The Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington, said in its daily report late on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had made additional advances in their incursion, now in its third week.

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine’s attack on Russia began on August 6, citing an unnamed source in the medical service – figures which are impossible to verify.
