SHERAKHAN yacht interior

Designed by Rijntjes Interior Design, the SHERAKHAN yacht is a luxurious vessel suitable for charter. Inside she has a spa and a beauty salon, as well as a gym.

A big master suite features its own study, and there are plenty of rooms for guests to explore.

Perfectly suited for relaxation, she has a sauna that guests can use after a day at the spa, or after enjoying the jacuzzi on board.

There’s plenty of space for guests in the 13 suits available. SHERAKHAN is considered to be perfect for conferences or for other special occasions. The philosophy is to not let excess furniture take away from the beauty of the yacht itself.

The interior is mostly white, with a modern look. Guests can enjoy a sleek, contemporary design that brings out the small details in every room.

Specifications

SHERAKHAN is 69,65 meters (228,6 ft) long, with a beam of 12 meters (39,4 ft), and a draft of 4,5 meters (14,9 ft). She has a maximum speed of 12 knots, and a cruising speed of 10 knots.

Thanks to her full-displacement hull, the SHERAKHAN yacht is very stable while at anchor. She is powered by one Caterpillar engine. She can hold up to 22 guests and up to 19 crew.

The elegant exterior of SHERAKHAN was designed by Verkerk Yachting Projects. Her white, sleek design cuts through the water with finesse, and if you were to find yourself on board, there are a plethora of water toys to entertain you.

Waterslides along the side of the vessel, jet skis, kayaks, and wakeboards are just some of the things there are to choose from.

Her exterior spaces are very large, and there’s a lookout house where you can enjoy the view.

The overwhelmingly white exterior was a conscious choice from the owner, who wanted people to be able to see every detail of the vessel, and not have the nuances be lost due to darker colors.

The SHERAKHAN yacht is available for charter in Northern Europe in both Summer and Winter. The weekly rate for a charter is approximately $510,500.

1965 – Yacht launched as Princess Margaret

2005 – Rebuilt and renamed Sherakhan

2016 – Underwent a refit

2017 – Repainted white

legend-super-yacht

On board with Jan Verkerk, owner of explorer yacht Legend

Builder, owner, captain, engineer, charterer… superyacht owner Jan Verkerk, the Dutchman who created the award-winning explorer Legend , explains his many talents to Dominique Afacan.

Jan Verkerk laughs easily, and little wonder – he’s making a profit from his passion. As a young boy of eight in Holland, sailing around the waters of Loosdrecht on a wooden boat given to him by his father, he could never have dreamed that he’d end up building and owning superyachts of his own, capable of exploring the world’s most remote regions and carrying the world’s wealthiest customers.

Fast forward 40-odd years and that dream is now Verkerk’s happy reality. While many view superyacht ownership as a frivolous extravagance, Verkerk always believed there was money to be made in the charter business. Now he’s proving it, one $500,000 trip at a time. So just how has he pulled it off? “I build my own boats – plus, my technical background makes me very handy,” says Verkerk, from his home just outside Utrecht, referencing his decision at 18 to skip university and train as a mechanic. “I used to buy old boats when I was growing up and teach myself how to fix them up for racing. Then the big work began and I was experienced enough to handle it.”

It’s nothing new to find owners who are heavily involved in the build of their superyachts, but Verkerk’s commitment is different. For his latest creation, the 77.4 metre ice-breaker Legend , he spent seven days a week at the shipyard for two and a half years, sometimes pushing through until the early hours to stay on schedule. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of every fitting, down to the last light bulb, such is the level of his involvement and technical expertise. “Because I build my own boats in rented facilities,” he adds, “I am able to make them a little more cheaply. It’s a clever way of doing business.” In the case of Legend , which is now listed for sale with Fraser , Verkerk engaged Dutch shipyard Icon for the steelwork, but used his own sub-contractors to do everything else.

His recent successes suggest he is on to something with his DIY strategy. Launched last year, Legend was an industry game-changer, taking expedition sailing to a new level of luxury, and picking up the World Superyacht Award for best rebuilt yacht at the recent ceremony in Florence. Charter guests (and there’s room for 26 of them) can swim in the boat’s heated pool while they sail along the freezing Antarctic Peninsula, or they can climb into the boat’s three man U-Boat Worx submarine to find out what’s going on beneath the surface. Inside there’s a cinema, a gym, a spa and room for a grand piano. This year, she is already booked to go to the Baltic, Antarctica, Norway, the Caribbean, Greenland and the Med. Charter guests seem to be attracted by the opportunity for adventure, both on and off the boat.

Verkerk’s adventures in the charter world, however, haven’t always run so smoothly. The first boat he was serious about chartering, Jaguar , didn’t make any money at all. “She was a 38 metre classic boat and she was highly popular and active but it was difficult to make money with a yacht of this size,” recalls Verkerk. After a chance request to be part of a tandem charter trip with a yacht called Esmerelda , it occurred to him that most charter yachts could only host a limited number of guests. “I eventually realised the only way to make money was to scale up,” he explains.

His next boat, the ice-breaking Sherakhan , leapt up to 70 metres and was capable of sleeping 26 guests. Verkerk’s gamble paid off. Perfect for a growing market of adventurous charter guests, she sailed (and still sails) everywhere from South Georgia to French Polynesia , with Verkerk benefiting from economies of scale along the way. Sensing an increasing thirst from charter guests for exploration, when it came to buying another boat for his business, a powerful expedition yacht was the obvious choice.

Legend , originally a tug boat built in Holland for Russian clients, was an ice-breaker with potential, though she was far from perfect on first inspection. “She had already been rebuilt as a yacht, but not in quite the right way,” admits Verkerk. “At some point there had been a fire on board and the wheelhouse and the master cabin were destroyed.” It was just before 2008 and yachting was at its summit so the insurance company decided to keep it to sell. Then the financial crisis hit. That and the state of the boat meant that buying her didn’t break the bank. Rebuilding her, however, was another story.

“We basically built an entirely new boat,” recalls Verkerk. “Ninety per cent of the technology had to be replaced. From light bulbs to steering systems, polar code radios to the right size bed linen. It was a tremendous operation that took two years. The hardest thing was meeting qualifications – everything had to be beautiful, but it was also important that it didn’t burn. We needed certificates for every material – that side of things took a bit longer than we expected.”

Verkerk took charge of the interior design, too, adamant that Legend should stand out in the crowded charter market. “The idea was to make the boat as far from boring as possible. In many yachts, there’s one style – the design stays the same from the saloon to the master cabin. On Legend , we wanted it to be more of an adventure. The hallways might be pretty standard but every time you open a door, you enter a different world. People love it.” Verkerk was careful to consider exactly how the boat’s space would be used, crucial considering her most popular destinations. “When you go to Antarctica there are a lot of dull moments when you’re sailing and there is nothing to do. Most yachts are built with a focus on the exterior spaces but I felt the exact opposite was important with Legend .”

Regardless, the outside of the ship was far from neglected. “We built a swimming pool outside, which we heat to 35 degrees. It requires a tremendous amount of power and hot water to heat it to this temperature but people do love to swim out there in Antarctica,” says Verkerk. There’s also a heated barbecue area – but for every exterior design decision, the cold weather had to be taken into account. “It is designed so that when you sit, you’re out of the icy wind. You have to stand up to see the scenery.” Legend enjoys plenty of that and expeditions on the yacht have opened the owner’s eyes to some of the most astonishing parts of the world.

“Antarctica is absolutely number one when it comes to scenery and experience. This year we were one of the first boats through the Lemaire Channel and after that we went down to the Ukrainian base,” he says. “We were really breaking the ice – the ship was moving fantastically. And then the wildlife, well, what can you say? Nothing is afraid of you. When you experience it for the first time, you don’t know where to look, how to react.”

For those who have already ticked off Antarctica, he recommends South Georgia. “You think you’ve seen wildlife in Antarctica? You have no idea. You have to go to the shore and get the sea lions to make space for the tender. The whales are everywhere and there are millions of penguins – it is truly unbelievable.”

Although Verkerk sees great value in being able to sail to the world’s most remote destinations in the lap of luxury and with all the latest toys, he actually sees good service as the ultimate secret to building a successful charter boat. “It’s like booking a hotel,” he explains. “You initially get drawn in by looking at pictures of the swimming pool or the rooms online – but by the time you leave the thing you remember most is the staff: how nice they were to you, whether it was clean and whether the food was good. It all comes down to human interaction really.”

On board, he splits the duties a little differently from other yachts, hiring extra staff to take care of general management and leaving the captain free to run the boat. “I organise it like a hotel rather than a ship,” he explains. “On normal yachts the captain is very important. That’s also true in our case but on Legend he is not running the ‘hotel’, he is simply running the boat. For the service aspect, I tend to hire people with hotel backgrounds. For me it’s the only way you can do it.”

Verkerk got both his captain’s licence and his engineer’s licence in his mid-30s and often put both to good use on Sherakhan . Those days are over now, but he can’t resist spending at least some of his time on board in the engine room. “I love to see what is going on in there,” he says. “Perhaps that’s unusual!” Verkerk’s son has inherited the bug too and is already a captain at 28. The two worked together for a while, although his son is now on another yacht. Verkerk’s daughter, meanwhile, is studying to be a vet, but will nevertheless often accompany her father on expeditions to Antarctica. “She likes animals,” explains Verkerk, “so where else could be more beautiful?”

Surprisingly, given his obvious passion for superyachting, there are currently no plans for more projects. “I am 55 now and I’ve spent about 10 years non-stop on sea,” says Verkerk. “I am starting to want a bit more spare time. I like being at home so now I usually just do one trip a year on each boat.”

So how does home compare to life on board an ice-breaking superyacht? “I live in a farmhouse in a village outside of Utrecht. There’s water at the front and water at the back. It’s not extremely big or luxurious but I love it. Compared to the yachts, my life on land is very normal. Of course, it’s all relative!” Verkerk’s laugh rings out again. Time will tell whether he’ll be able to resist another adventure.

Superyacht Sherakhan

When it comes to classic yachts, the 228-foot Sherakhan puts a very different spin on things. It was built 50 years ago as an ice-breaking tug and used as a Dutch training ship before its current owner, businessman and sailor Jan Verkerk, acquired the vessel in 2006. Verkerk then oversaw its conversion into an expedition yacht. Sherakhan was the second yacht in his four-strong fleet that included sailing yacht Thandeka , classic schooner Borkumriff II , and Legend , one of the first ice breaking superyacht conversions, which he sold to Eric and Wendy Schmidt in 2020.

Verkerk’s vision for Sherakhan was to create a classic-looking expedition yacht capable of visiting remote and undiscovered regions. The global explorer has more than lived up to expectations with a logbook that includes Greenland, Antarctica and Patagonia. In 2020, Sherakhan sailed over 150,000 nautical miles—the equivalent of more than seven trips around the globe in one year.

A surprisingly elegant exterior is coupled with an arresting interior styled by Claudia Rijntjes, where 26 guests enjoy an array of amenities, including a cavernous double-height open atrium dining space and a Balinese-themed spa. On board comfort is further heightened by the service and skill set of the yacht’s 19 crew.

In 2022, Sherakhan underwent a complete interior renovation, which saw a dedicated gym added and updates to the engine room.

Here are 10 things you didn’t know about one of the best examples of a classic explorer on the charter market, available through Y.CO.

The ‘Jungle Book’ Link

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Though spelled (and pronounced) slightly differently, the yacht is named after “Shere Khan,” the fictional Bengal tiger in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book . Verkerk’s daughter was watching the Disney animation on a seemingly endless loop at the time of the yacht’s conversion, prompting him to call the vessel after the story’s jungle-smart villain. A piece of art of the namesake tiger hangs in the main salon. It’s an apt moniker for a yacht with a library that holds first edition works by famous authors.

Front-Row Seats

who owns super yacht sherakhan

The sun lounges beside the pilothouse are reserved for the ultimate sea views. Guests lucky enough to cruise Antarctica or South Georgia will never miss a whale breaching or penguin sighting, thanks to the prominent seating. The seats also guarantee elevated 180-degree views.

A Head for Heights

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Few yachts can comfortably seat 26 guests for a formal dinner. Even fewer house it in a 23-foot-high double atrium bathed in light from the glass-bottom Jacuzzi above. The 66-foot-long space is crowned by a silver chandelier and flanked by two sets of staircases that lead to a second salon with a dancefloor, bar and bespoke seating. Evening meals can be accompanied by live music, with a digital piano, acoustic guitar, drums and tambourines all within arm’s reach.

Flexi-Decks

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Sherakhan accommodates 26 guests in 13 flexible cabin arrangements set across three decks. The design is made up of seven double cabins, two convertible cabins and four twin cabins. Interconnecting cabins form extended luxurious suites or family rooms.

Far From the Madding crowd

who owns super yacht sherakhan

When 25 guests, plus crew, feel like a crowd, the owner’s upper-deck, master suite offers relief, with a private terrace, en suite, and central Jacuzzi. A low-level bed is twinned with a coffee table and chairs, a lounging area, and circular artwork on the ceiling depicting autumn leaves and a blue sky. A second double cabin on the same level also functions as a an office.

Spinner’s Paradise

who owns super yacht sherakhan

There is no shortage of onboard entertainment with outdoor barbecues by day—prepared by the yacht’s 30-year veteran head chef—and evening gatherings that go on long into the night, powered by a Pioneer professional DJ deck, disco lights, a subwoofer, and four large speakers to ensure the beats ripple out across the water.

Giant Jacuzzi

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Guests needn’t wait their turn for a soak in the giant glass-bottomed Jacuzzi, which can accommodate up to 18 guests. And those wishing to avoid the communal splash can lie on a nearby lounge, swing in a hammock, or take a seat at the bar.

Bali at Sea

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Sherakhan ’s lower-deck spa inspires Balinese meditation wherever guests happen to be cruising in the world. Added during the 2022 refit, it includes a sauna, second Jacuzzi, and massage area, with an onboard masseuse and yoga instructor at the guests’ disposal.

Fitness Fanatics

who owns super yacht sherakhan

The purpose-built gym was another addition to the 2022 refit. It’s designed to help guests stay on top of fitness goals while at sea. The space includes a treadmill, bicycle, elliptical machine, and free weights.

Sherakhan ‘s owner likes to equip his yacht with a variety of water toys suitable for all ages. The toy chest includes an inflatable slide that descends from the sun deck, a water trampoline, kneeboards, eFoils, and three waverunners stored on deck. There are also two tenders that help guests to explore wherever Sherakhan happens to be cruising, from remote Caribbean cays to Patagonian fjords.

Sherakhan, the unique story of a maritime school vessel converted into a head-turning superyacht

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]orn as merchant navy training vessel, the 70m built is now one of the most popular and adventurous charter vessels. Originally built in 1966 as a maritime school vessel, a three-year project converted the Prinses Margriet into a head-turning superyacht.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

It is not uncommon for large yachts to have an interesting history, but the fascinating tale of Sherakhan’s transformation is unique in every way. From humble beginnings as a merchant navy training vessel to show-stopping superyacht status, she is now one of the most popular and adventurous charter vessels able to accommodate more than 12 guests. She is available for charter to groups of up to 26 guests through central agent Tom DeBuse at Y.CO for a weekly rate of €425,000 (plus APA). Here, we reveal the remarkable details of how Jan Verkerk, a visionary businessman and passionate sailor, turned his dream of creating a ground-breaking charter yacht into reality.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

A symbol of national pride

Sherakhan ’s first incarnation was as the Prinses Margriet , a famous training ship for the Netherlands’ merchant navy that was launched in 1966 for the Dutch Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz, operating out of Terschelling. She served her country by preparing the nation’s seafarers for a safe career on the water, first as a training vessel and latterly as a hostel for the cadets. But after four decades of service, the Prinses Margriet was decommissioned and left moored off the coast of Terschelling with an uncertain future ahead of her.

A top-heavy and bulky double-bridged training ship, she offered little obvious aesthetic appeal and, to the uninitiated, she was an unlikely target for a major overhaul. But most importantly, her steel hull was in perfect order despite some 45 years of hard work in the salty ocean environment. The galvanised metal had deteriorated by just one millimetre since her launch and was still three centimetres thick (compared to many modern yacht hulls, which need only be eight millimetres).

An astute business mind

After decades of refitting, converting and building many boats and yachts, backed up by his extensive background in mechanics, a lifetime of sailing, a canny eye for potential and love for challenge , Jan Verkerk, was set to start a new project.

His first international commercially operated vessel was M/Y Jaguar; a 38.1m (125ft) deep-draft displacement yacht. Jaguar was bought and refitted by Verkerk with the expertise and advice of ms. Anne Sterringa. It is safe to say Jaguar was one of the first superyachts to hit the charter scene! Once arrived in the Mediterranean and ran by both Verkerk and Rijntjes, Jaguar quickly became one of the most popular yachts on the buzzing Mediterranean scene.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Leaping a few decades into the future, along comes Legend. A a 77.1m (253ft) Dutch-built former Russian ice-breaker with a short yacht-career as Giant I, bought in 2013 by Verkerk. With this project, we could almost call Verkerk a visionary since Legend turned out to be the very first super yacht able to navigate polar waters without support vessels while hosting groups of up to 26 guests onboard!  Legend had a complete interior and exterior overhaul that Verkerk himself project managed. This extensive rebuilt took almost 3 years and included the addition of the swimming platform, elongating the vessel with a stunning 4 metres! The yacht won a Boat International Award for Best Rebuilt Yacht and went on to circumnavigate the globe multiple times with Verkerk at the helm.

Back to 2002, when curiosity and ambition grew and Verkerk and Rijntjes went searching for a larger yacht to charter.  The both of them saw the potential for a new project: one that could accommodate more than the number of guests allowed on yacht-certified vessels, to offer luxury and comfort in a homely environment without the shackles of a 12-person limit. Designs were drawn up for a new-build project  and when Verkerk came across the Prinses Margriet lying dormant and in such an outstanding condition, he knew she offered the perfect solution. Her hull condition was the main reason for buying her, says Verkerk, but her existing SOLAS compliance was also of huge benefit. It meant she had the potential to be adapted to look like a superyacht but would be legally allowed to take more than 12 passengers, as long as any adaptations stayed within the strict regulatory standards.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Technical challenges

And so, in 2002, Verkerk undertook the most technical challenge of his career so far: a three-year project to convert the Prinses Margriet into a head-turning superyacht that would make a significant impact on the charter market.  Verkerk worked tirelessly with Rijntjes to plan everything to the last detail, calling on his engineering background to inform the technical decisions while Rijntjes immersed herself in the interior’s overhaul.

“Successful yacht building is about calculating, calculating and calculating again,” Verkerk remarks. Final designs were drawn up with KMC & KHMB Enkhuizen, which involved major restructuring of the superstructure as well as the stern.

Having a very top-heavy look as Prinses Margriet , she was in need of skilful remodelling to befit her new yachting role. Verkerk was inspired by the lines and styling of a 1936 classic yacht he had seen in the Mediterranean, and set about redrawing the boat’s exterior from the main deck up. The heavy steel would be replaced by aluminium, and the bow would be raised to make it more prominent and in line with classic yacht proportions. A large area was removed from the canoe stern to allow for a boarding passerelle and an opening section for stern-to boarding.

“With such a major conversion needed, it was imperative to get the style of the vessel right, as so many conversions can look rather clumpy and incongruous,” wisely comments Verkerk of the challenge faced by the design team.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

In total, some 200 tonnes of steel superstructure were replaced with 60 tonnes of aluminium. The completed project called for 75 tonnes of aluminium, 40 tonnes of steel and 10 tonnes of stainless steel to be used.

From the main deck down, all technical equipment and systems needed to be replaced except the 212mm diameter oil-bath propeller shaft, an emergency generator, three ballast pumps, some newly restored launching cranes and the original white SOLAS-compliant lifeboats (meaning unsightly new bright orange SOLAS lifeboats did not need to be installed).

Verkerk decided to keep the engine room in its original location, but its contents were due a complete update. Over the 45 years of service that the engine had provided, it had built up more than 100,000 hours, and so needed to be replaced. A single 1,014kW Caterpillar 2512 B DI-TA was carefully selected to meet the new needs of the yacht’s operations; having successfully run on a single engine for more than four decades, Verkerk decided that the redundancy provided by a second engine was unnecessary. As a steel displacement superyacht, Sherakhan ’s new maximum speed would be a respectable 13 knots, while she would cruise comfortably at 11 knots.

Three new generators were installed alongside the original emergency generator, as well as a suite of modern hotel systems and fire and safety measures. Particular attention and countless man hours were spent on reduction of noise and vibration to provide the ultimate comfort to guests onboard, to the point where they would not even be able to tell if the generator or air conditioning were on.

Although these may seem less obvious to guests, it is the technical challenges that often prove the most tough when undertaking a project on this scale, says Verkerk: “The art of building mega yachts is in making wishes come true. The problem is the technical realisation. For example, you need to make water for the hot tubs. We use 20,000 litres a day!”

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Showstopping interiors

The interior design of Sherakhan was carried out entirely on instinct by Rijntjes and Verkerk, calling on their extensive experience of renovating smaller yachts rather than taking inspiration from books or yachting magazines. Due to the limitations of SOLAS compliance, there were many creative challenges when it came to the selection of materials that were permitted to be used. A combination of natural tones and finishes offset by striking artwork lend a comfortable and homely atmosphere that has been popular with countless repeat charter guests. Sherakhan is a home away from home for all those who enjoy time on her.

Undoubtedly the most eminent feature of the yacht is her stunning saloon, which takes pride of place in the centre of the yacht’s main and upper decks. At 20m in length and 9m in width, it is made all the more grand thanks to its double-height ceiling extending up 7m past a minstrel’s gallery accessed by two open-tread sweeping staircases of glass and steel. Light bathes the room from above through the opaque glass bottom of an enormous spa pool, which was specially cut into the superstructure with expert design and engineering skill, due to its 350kg weight. By day the room is flooded with natural sunlight while at night, diners enjoy the playful twinkling of the spa’s underwater lights.

The 7.5m curved wooden dining table mirrors the shape of the gallery, inlaid with wenge, white ash and teak in geometric patterns, and a pair of stunning Italian sculptural lights illuminate from above. The Greek butterscotch-hue marble floor trimmed with varnished teak is surrounded by a sumptuous off-white deep-pile carpet. To the aft of the saloon is a lounging area with two asymmetrical seating areas facing a large television and fireplace, respectively. A white baby grand piano sits next to the bar and a bijou dancefloor for after-dinner fun, while the gallery above serves as an excellent spot for  quiet reflection in the day or pre-dinner evening cocktails. Double doors off the saloon lead to a large alfresco dining area with three wooden tables and seating for 26 guests.

The expansive sundeck features the splendid glass-bottomed, 18-person spa pool with a fixed bimini for shade, surrounded by loungers. A barbecue area and bar to the aft of the sundeck is the perfect spot for a sundowner cocktail, while there is ample space for the  tenders and jetskis to be stowed. Another stand-out feature on Sherakhan is the unique circular observation lounge in the funnel, known as the “crow’s nest”, which stands some 20m above the waterline to offer perfect views of the ever-changing surroundings with protection from the elements.

Fit for a king

The yacht’s staterooms range in size from 30m 2 (323ft 2 ) to the 50m 2 (538ft 2 ) master suite, located at the front of the yacht for the best views onboard. It comprises a lounge, ensuite his’ and her’s bathrooms and study (which can be converted to an additional cabin) to complement the large bedroom. The bedroom also features a private terrace.

The additional 10 staterooms (four on the main deck and six on the lower deck) each have king-sized double or twin beds, two of which feature a connected double-bunked children’s room. Named after celebrated authors, each of the bedrooms is decorated uniquely and given adequate space for comfortable lounging, should guests prefer some privacy. Also found on the lower deck is the library, decorated in the style of a gentlemen’s club, as well as a beauty salon permanently staffed with certified personnel.

Adding to the wellness amenities available is the Spa de la Sirene on the lower deck, a vast space incorporating a sauna and raised central spa pool, with metallic mosaic tiles depicting a mermaid looking down over a freestanding bath. A gym completes the offering, conveniently located next to the post-workout sauna and bathing options. As this space is located below the waterline, Rijntjes cleverly incorporated faux backlit portholes and coloured lights to ensure a relaxing atmosphere.

Since her initial conversion and relaunch in 2005, Sherakhan has benefitted from a number of updates and smaller refits to ensure she is always in  optimal condition for guests. The latest and most extensive refit was completed at Dutch shipyard ICON Yachts in December 2017, incorporating a crisp and contemporary palette of understated whites and off-whites, complemented by a range of refined textures. These 2017-designs were envisioned and created by Verkerk together with Sherakhan’s long-term hotel manager ms. Manon de Wit. Her hull was given a fresh new look, changing from classic navy blue into a timeless white, clearly showing all features and lines.  Many of her technical systems were given an update, including the audio-visual entertainment, internet and communications systems.

Sherakhan continues to evolve with contemporary tastes and the new technologies that are available but she continues to remain true to her original essence, as created by Verkerk over those countless hours spent envisaging the perfect yacht for entertainment. A home away from home, she is and will always be the consummate host to all those who charter her.

Sherakhan, a story of passion

who owns super yacht sherakhan

From its origins as a Merchant Navy training vessel to its status as a record-breaking superyacht , today Sherakhan is one of the most popular and adventurous charter vessels on the market

by Marco Mariani

LARGE YACHTS OFTEN HAVE AN INTERESTING PAST AND A STORY TO TELL, BUT THE ONE OF PRINSES MARGRIET BECOMING SHERAKHAN IS UNIQUE IN EVERY SENSE. Jan Verkerk, a visionary businessman who managed to make his dream come true, stands behind the transformation that led Sherakhan to become one of the most popular and adventurous charter vessels on the market, capable of accommodating more than 12 guests. Prinses Margriet was a famous Merchant Navy training vessel, launched in 1966, and serving the Dutch Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz in Terschelling. She served her country by preparing members of the national navy for a safe career at sea , first as a training ship, and then as a hostel for cadets. However, after four decades of service, she was decommissioned and left moored off the coast of Terschelling with an uncertain future ahead. A top-heavy and bulky double-bridged training ship, not too beautiful to look at, and with low prospects for a major overhaul.

However, despite her 45 years of hard work in the salty ocean environment, her steel hull was still in perfect order . The galvanized metal had deteriorated by just one millimeter since her launch and was still three centimeters thick, compared to many modern yacht hulls which only need to be eight millimeters thick. This was also why Jan Verkerk decided to acquire the hull and undertake the restoration project.

Verkerk was not new to the industry; he had decades of refitting, converting, and building boats and yachts behind him. Among his most important projects is the M/YJaguar , a 38.1-meter deep-draught displacement yacht that was among the first superyachts to become a charter boat. Another remarkable project is Legend, an old 77.1-meter Russian icebreaker purchased by Verkerk in 2013 and which, based upon his project, was transformed into a hull capable of sailing the polar waters without support boats, hosting groups of 26 people on board.

But if we go back to the year 2002, when Verkerk and Rijntjes were searching for a large charter yacht . Both recognized the potential of the abandoned Prinses Margriet and realized it was perfect for a project that could accommodate a higher number of guests than the one allowed on certified yachts, offering luxury and comfort in a homely environment without the 12-person limit.

And that’s how Verkerk embarked on one of the most technical challenges of his career : a project that lasted three years to convert the Prinses Margriet into an astonishing superyacht that would be a game-changer on the charter market. Verkerk worked tirelessly together with Rijntjes to plan everything down to the smallest detail, relying on his engineering knowledge, while Rijntjes engaged with the reconstruction of the interiors. «Successful yacht building is about calculating, calculating, and calculating again», Verkerk remarks. The final plans were drawn up with KMC & KHMB Enkhuizen, which brought about a major renovation of the superstructure and the stern. Due to her massive appearance, Prinses Margriet needed a skillful remodeling to adapt to her new yachting function.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Verkerk, inspired by the lines and the style of a classic yacht from 1936 he had seen in the Mediterranean , redesigned the exterior of the boat from the main deck up. Heavy steel was replaced by aluminum and the bow was raised to make it more prominent and in line with the proportions of a classic yacht. «With such a major conversion needed, it was imperative to get the style of the vessel right, as so many conversions can look rather clumpy and incongruous» , comments Verkerk. In total, around 200 tonnes of steel for the superstructure have been replaced by 60 tonnes of aluminum . The completed project involved the use of 75 tonnes of aluminum, 40 tonnes of steel and 10 tonnes of stainless steel. From the main deck downwards, all technical equipment and systems had to be replaced, except for the 212 mm diameter oil bath propeller shaft, an emergency generator, three ballast pumps, a few newly restored launching cranes, and the original white Solas-compliant lifeboats.

Sherakhan ’s interior design was entirely created by Rijntjes and Verkerk .

Verkerk decided to keep the engine room in its original location, but its machines had to be completely updated . During the 45 years of service, the engine had accumulated more than 100,000 hours of navigation and therefore had to be replaced. A single 1,014 kW Caterpillar 2512 B DI-TA was carefully selected to meet the new demands of the yacht’s operations. Having successfully run on one engine for more than four decades, Verkerk decided that a second engine was redundant and not necessary. As a displacement steel superyacht, Sherakhan ’s new top speed would reach 13 knots, and 11 knots when cruising. Three new generators were added to the original emergency generator , as well as a series of modern fire and safety systems. Particular attention and countless hours of work were dedicated to reducing noise and vibrations to guarantee maximum comfort for guests on board, to the point where they would not even be able to tell if the generator or air conditioning system were on. Although they may seem less obvious to guests, these are the technical challenges that often prove to be the most difficult when undertaking a project of this scale.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

Sherakhan ’s interior design was created entirely by Rijntjes and Verkerk , relying upon their vast experience in renovating yachts although of smaller sizes. Due to the limitations of Solas standards, there were many creative challenges when it came to selecting the materials allowed for the project. A combination of natural shades and finishes, contrasting with impressive works of art, create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, which has been highly appreciated by the many guests who have chartered the yacht so far. Without a doubt, the yacht’s most eminent feature is her stunning saloon, which takes pride of place in the center of the main and upper decks. 20 meters long and 9 meters wide, it is made all the more grand thanks to the double-height ceiling extending up 7 meters, accessible by two open-tread glass and steel staircases.

Light floods into the room from above through the opaque glass bottom of a huge spa pool , which was specially cut into the superstructure with expert design and engineering skill, due to its 350 kg weight. At night, diners can enjoy the playful twinkling of the spa’s underwater lights. The 7.5-meter carved wooden dining table is inlaid with geometric patterns in wengé, white ash, and teak. The floor in Greek butterscotch-hue marble, covered in painted teak, is surrounded by a magnificent white carpet.

The large sundeck is equipped with a splendid glass-bottomed SPA pool with fixed bimini offering shade and surrounded by deck chairs.

The aft of the saloon features a lounging area with two asymmetrical seating areas facing a large TV and the fireplace respectively . Next to the bar, there is a baby grand piano and a dance floor, while the terrace above is the ideal place to relax during the day or for an evening cocktail before dinner. The double doors in the lounge lead to a large outdoor dining area with three wooden tables and seating for 26 guests. The large sundeck is equipped with a beautiful glass-bottomed SPA pool and a fixed bimini providing shade, surrounded by deck chairs. At the stern, there is also a barbecue and a bar as well as plenty of space to store tenders and jet skis. Another notable element onboard the Sherakhan is the one-of-a-kind circular observation room, known as the “crow’s nest”, which stands about 20 meters above the waterline and offers a perfect view.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

The owner’s suite is located in the front of the yacht . It includes a lounge, private bathroom, and a study (which can be converted into an additional cabin) in addition to the large bedroom. The bedroom also has a private terrace. The 10 guest cabins are equipped with double or twin beds. Named after famous authors, each of the bedrooms is uniquely furnished and equipped with suitable space for relaxation, when guests need some privacy. The lower deck also hosts the library and a beauty salon with qualified staff. In addition to the wellness services, the Spa de la Sirene is located on the lower deck, a vast space that includes a sauna and a raised central spa pool, and a gym, thoughtfully located next to the post-workout sauna. Since this space is below the waterline, Rijntjes brilliantly incorporated faux backlit portholes and colored lights to ensure a relaxing atmosphere.

Since her first transformation and re-launch in 2005, Sherakhan has undergone a series of updates and minor refits to ensure that she is always in top condition for her guests . The latest and most extensive refit was completed at the Dutch shipyard ICON Yachts in December 2017, supervised by Verkerk himself. Her hull took on a fresh new look, changing from the classic navy blue to white to bring out all its characteristics and lines. Many of her technical systems were updated, including the audiovisual equipment, internet, and communication systems.

One of the most iconic expedition yachts available for charter, SHERAKHAN is now undergoing a major transformation which is sure to make her more tempting than ever.

As well as receiving an enlivening polar white paint job, her vintage look is set to be replaced by more modern styling and a distinctly minimalist theme.

Commenting on the extent of the refit, the owner is reported as saying ‘you won’t be able to recognize her, she is getting a complete new look and when you will see her, you won’t believe it is the same boat!’.

Bringing a classic into the modern age, the refit of superyacht SHERAKHAN is certain to amaze future charter guests

Owner reflects on 77m 'Legend' conversion

The 77m superyacht from icon yachts celebrated her official christening in harlingen, where we speak to her owner about the project.….

Image for article Owner reflects on 77m 'Legend' conversion

Despite the fact that she has already completed three charter trips with Camper & Nicholsons following her launch in April, the converted ice breaker was back in the 150m dry dock at Icon Yachts for a christening party on Friday 28 October, 2016, as she made final preparations to spend the winter 2016-17 season in Antarctica, complete with mini sub and snow scooters on board.

Her owner, Jan Verkerk of Verkerk Yachting Projects, has worked as a captain and marine engineer most of his working life. As the owner of the charter motoryacht  Sherakhan and sailing yacht  Lady Thuraya , he has been a pioneer in promoting expedition charters to far-flung destinations.

“I’m not your regular superyacht owner,” says Verkerk. “This is my business and every cent I put into a project I have to earn back.”

Legend began life as a Soviet ice-breaking tug in the 1970s, but after breaking down in an American port she was abandoned and eventually converted into the explorer yacht Giant . A major fire on board later destroyed the owner’s deck and the wheelhouse and the yacht was out of commission for years – until Jan Verkerk identified her as a suitable candidate for refitting.

“We had run charters to Antarctica with Sherakhan , but I was looking for a no-nonsense, Ice Class vessel that could also have a certified helideck, a swimming pool, a mini submarine, and still carry at least 24 passengers.”

Giant arrived at Icon yachts in 2014 and work began to extend the stern by nearly 4m, restyle the exterior profile with Diana Yacht Design, completely refit the interior and re-class her under SOLAS and Passenger Yacht regulations.  The conversion was realised in record time and last spring Legend left the yard for her first charter trip to northern Europe without time for an official send-off.

“A client once told me that yacht ownership is not rational,” said Jen Wartena, CEO of Icon Yachts, during his address. “But Jan Verkerk brings rationality to the process. This was not by any means a straightforward refit, but Jan always had the final goal in sight. Backed up by a very special team, he started and finished it.”

Also moored in front of the Icon shipyard is the empty hull and superstructure of 75m Project 250. The yacht (formerly known as M25 ) has had a checkered past after construction at Cantieri San Marco in Genoa stalled with no indication as to why. The owner reportedly sold his interest in the project and the yacht was removed from the shipyard under tow, but was impounded in Gibraltar en route. It then turned up at the Nobiskrug facility in Rendsburg.

In 2015 Icon announced it had been commissioned by an experienced owner to extend the bow and stern under the guidance of her original designer, Tim Heywood, and add new features such as a swimming pool and foredeck helipad. The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2017 with interior design by Studio Massari.

Other projects include the 28m Icon Islander, designed by Ken Freivokh and currently for sale with Northrup & Johnson, and the 46m Gotham Project with Bristow Holmes. The black-painted Gotham Project, designed by Ivan Erdevicki with naval architecture by van Oossanen, has been styled to resemble something out of Batman to match her owner’s matte black Lamborghini.

Master with Jacuzzi , private terrace, lounge area/ and study which can be converted to a double. All the double beds are king size. All suites are equipped with a television, DVD, stereo and ipod dock, mini bar, safe, air-conditioning/ heating, a vanity table/desk, a computer point and wifi, relaxing chairs, saloon table, a very spacious walk-in closet, bathroom with toilet, bidet, bath (Jacuzzi), double basin and shower Main-deck: Once you set foot on the gangway, you will be surprised by the beautiful details, the enormous deck areas, astonishing woodwork and the incredible choice of outside furniture! We are sure you have never experienced a view as marvelous as the one from the look-out house. The Jacuzzi is very big (18 people)and of course we have a complete B.B.Q. area When you finally come inside, you will be surprised by the beam of the yacht. The main saloon is about 20 meters long and 9 meters wide. The style is cozy and, what we think is the most important, homely. Every single guest on MY Sherakhan must immediately have the feeling that this is their home and can relax the way they want! This is the way we chartered M.Y. Jaguar for many years, and with a lot of success. The main saloon is visually divided into two areas; On one side we find the dining area; with a beautiful table, where 22/24 people can be seated. On both sides of the dining table there are 2 impressive stairs which lead you to the owners deck. When you sit at the dining table and look up, you will be impressed by the atrium. You can look completely to the roof of the yacht where the Jacuzzi with glass bottom is situated. The enormous chandelier is of course specially designed for this area of 7 meters of height. The other side of the saloon is furnished to relax. Nice cozy couches, homely armchairs, enormous vases, a fireplace, a flat screen television, a bar where you can sit down to enjoy your drinks and of course a little podium with a white grand piano. Although the area is big, you will never have the chance to feel “lost”. From this area you have a nice view on the aft deck where the outside dining table is situated. When you walk through this area and pass the dining table, you will enter the vestibule. Here you can choose to go down to the beauty saloon and the suites on the accommodation deck or even go to the fitness-massage, sauna and Jacuzzi on the lower deck. When you go straight on from the vestibule, you will first meet the ladies room on one side and on the other side the library. After passing a door, you will come to the corridor on which has 2 spacious suites on each side. All four of them have are in the region of 38 square meters with an en-suite bathroom with bath and showers as well. (The size of 38 m2 is only the suite; it does not include the bathroom!) The suites: Our feeling about a big yacht is that also the suites must be large! When guests want to have some privacy, not only during the night…, they must experience all the luxury of a 5 star+ accommodation and of course be surrounded by a nicely furnished and decorated ambiance. All the double beds are king size. All suites are equipped with a television, DVD, stereo, mini bar, safe, air-conditioning/ heating, a vanity table/desk, a computer point, relaxing chairs, saloon table, a very spacious walk-in closet, bathroom with toilet, bidet, bath (Jacuzzi), double basin and shower. The way the woodwork is done, is astonishing! Nice and with unexpected details….. Accommodation deck: On the accommodation deck, you will find 4 suites. The smallest is 34 m2 and the biggest 37,3 m2. They are fitted just like all the others. You also will find two bunked cabins these can be either children’s themed cabins, ( or for security staff / adults. as the beds are 2m long. These cabins are connected with the 2 suites next door, but can also be used completely separately. The last area of importance on this deck is the beauty saloon. The beauty saloon is also fully equipped hair- and nail studio. So the guests can be pampered as much as they want! Lower deck: When you walk down the stairs, at the end of the corridor on the accommodation deck, you will enter a world of body pleasure! First take a drink at the bar to get used to the idea of exercise, then some fitness on the most modern equipment, followed by a well-deserved massage, going into the sauna to give your body the most precious rest and end up in the Jacuzzi to cool down! What more can a person wish for…..? Apart from all the equipment available here, the area in which this is situated is a feast for the eyes. Because of its location, completely in the front of the ship, below decks, the area is built like an American loft. Something like this hasn’t been shown before, the fantastic mosaics will amaze you. Owners deck: We leave this deck and follow our “tour” to the saloon on the owners deck. The one you can reach from the vestibule on the main deck or with the stairs besides the dining table. When you come by the 2 enormous stairs, your attention will be attracted by the spectacular view down on the dining table. There is a vacant space of 6 meters long and 3 meters wide! In this way, the areas are not completely separated but in a creative way connected with each other. The saloon is further furnished with exclusive and comfortable chairs, a bar with an integrated piano and a dance floor for the people who cannot control their feet! During the day time, this area will be quite popular! Reading and relaxing when the sun is too hot or having a drink or playing some chess. During the night this saloon will be perfect for having swinging cocktails before dinner. In the meantime the crew can set a wonderful decorated table and the guests will be surprised when they walk down the stairs to enjoy their dinner! Besides the saloon, this deck contains 2 suites of 31 m2 and 1 Master Cabin of almost 51 m2! This deck is completely outfitted for the owner with a huge study. Like the name reveals, this will be a Masterpiece! Located completely in the front of the ship, with an amazing view over the sea, this cabin has even its own terrace! The Jacuzzi is in the middle of the room, apart from the bathroom. The special effect of this cabin must be seen to be believed! The outer deck on the owners deck will have comfortable chairs, footstools and even table lamps for the people who want be outside at night and enjoy a good book or just want to sit in silence and enjoy the stars……… On every outer deck there will be music, when wanted. Wheelhouse-deck: The last deck is the wheelhouse deck. You can reach this deck from the corridor on the owners deck or from outside. On this deck the wheelhouse is situated, but the most important of all……..the Jacuzzi, loads of deck chairs, a bar, a B.B.Q. area, shade for the burnt ones and of course the look-out house!!!! Between the 2 funnels, we created a real look-out house. Once you are up there, you will be taken by surprise!!! The height of this location will be 20 meters above the waterline, so you can easily imagine what sort of view you can have up there! A 360° view for the star watchers, this is the ultimate spot….

7 of the largest yachts owned by American sports billionaires, ranked: From Dan Snyder’s Lady S, which has an IMAX theater, to the Dallas Cowboys owner’s $225 million superyacht. The most expensive vessel belongs to an immigrant who once washed dishes for $1.20 an hour.

who owns super yacht sherakhan

7. Steve Bisciotti, Baltimore Ravens – Winning Drive, 130 feet-

Yachts are an extension of their owner’s personality, and the 130-footer Westport yacht is no different. As a young boy, the tycoon, who is worth $7.5 billion today according to Forbes, witnessed his father’s demise and the struggles of his middle-class Italian-American household. It was a winning drive that led 23-year-old Bisciotti to Aerotek, a staffing company in the aerospace and technology sectors, with his cousin Jim Davis.

6. Terry Pegula, Buffalo Sabres – Top Five Yacht, 200 feet-

The son of a truck driver from Quebec relied on his science degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering and $7,500 from family and friends in 1983 to start his natural gas drilling company. The 73-year-old made a fortune in oil and gas before transforming it into a sports empire that includes the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. The father of famous professional tennis player Jessica Pegula saw many highs, but the one we like most is the $75 million Royal Hakvoort vessel named after the owner’s five kids. The tycoon, worth $10.8 billion according to Forbes, has shown the world how to have a fun time with family when you can splurge $500,000 per week.

5. Stanley Kroenke, Los Angeles Rams – Aquila yacht, 281 feet-

This 77-year-old sports mogul has been honing his business acumen since childhood. Raised in Mora, Missouri, he started sweeping floors at his father’s lumber yard and managing the company’s books by age ten. After earning his MBA in 1973, he met Wal-Mart heiress Ann Walton in Aspen and married her a year later. In 1985, he launched his own real estate development company, and by 1994, he ventured into sports team ownership. With a net worth of $16.9 billion, the billionaire now commands an impressive portfolio, including the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, and the U.K.’s Arsenal soccer club. A major landowner, with over 1.6 million acres of ranches across the U.S. and Canada also owns the majestic Aquilla superyacht with his wife, Walmart heiress Ann Walton.

4. Arthur Blank, Atlanta Falcons – Dreamboat, 295 feet

This 81-year-old New York-born businessman founded Home Depot after being fired from a hardware store. As it turned out, this setback led to a revolutionary success, transforming the home improvement industry and making the Babson Institute graduate a billionaire . Worth $9.1 billion today, the father of nine from three marriages retired as Home Depot’s co-chairman in 2001 and purchased the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons for $545 million in 2002. He also commissioned the massive ‘DreAMBoat,’ highlighting his initials (Arthur Morris Blank), built by Oceanco with interiors designed by Terence Disdale.

3. Daniel Snyder, Washington Commanders – Lady S, 305 feet

Snyder is an enterprising businessman worth $4.5 billion who, as a 20-year-old college dropout, made his first million leasing jets to fly college students to spring break in Fort Lauderdale and the Caribbean. The 59-year-old operated that business out of his parents’ apartment. With a successful business called Snyder Communications, he had enough wealth to buy the NFL’s Washington Commanders for $750 million in 1999. Ten years later, the boy who mopped the floors at the cafeteria inside the National Institutes of Health as a high school student splurged on a whopping $192 million yacht, Lady S.

2. Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys – Bravo Eugenia, 358 feet

From co-captaining Arkansas’ 1964 national championship football team to acquiring the Cowboys from H. R. “Bum” Bright for $140 million in 1989 (now valued at a staggering $9 billion), the 81-year-old billionaire worth $14.5 billion has showcased that sports run deep in his veins. His passion extends to art, with a collection that includes masterpieces by Picasso, Renoir, and Matisse. His $225 million Oceanco-built superyacht stands as a testament to luxury, adorned with art, bespoke furniture, and Swarovski details, all reflecting his wife Gene’s exquisite taste.

The Reymond Langton-designed floating palace, dubbed a cathedral of design in his own words, is a huge leap from a teenage migrant boy grinding away in a YMCA kitchen.
