The Franciso ferry remains the fastest ferry, built by Incat:

HSC Francisco is a High-Speed Catamaran built by Incat in Hobart, Tasmania. Powered by liquefied natural gas, she is currently the fastest passenger ship in service, reaching a speed of 58 knots (107 km/h; 67 mph). The propulsion is by two GE LM2500 water jets. Connecting Buenos Aires with Montevideo .

A ferry connection is considered fast if more than 40 knots can be achieved. Only ferry catamarans make this. Boats that are often high and therefore have less friction with the water.

HSC-Express

The largest diesel-powered catamaran ferry is the  HSC Express 1 and 2  between Aarhus and Odden (as well as Rønne and Ystad) in Denmark. More information about this catamaran can be found  here on Wikipedia  . The newer variants of this Ferry. For example, the HSC Express 3 is slightly smaller, so it may well be the case that these will remain the fastest and largest catamarans in the world for a very long time.

UPDATE: By the way, the  Express 5  will eventually become the largest.

Sometimes you hear that the Hodor pleasure yacht (  Astilleros Armon  ) is the largest catamaran with 60 meters, but this is incorrect. It is much smaller than the HSC Express at  112.6 meters .

Wärtsilä’s axial waterjets are powering the ‘Francisco’, the first fast ferry to utilize liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. In addition to two of its axial waterjets , Wärtsilä has also supplied an advanced propulsion control system for the ‘Francisco’. The 99 m catamaran attained a lightship speed of 58.1 knots (107.6 km/h) in its recent speed trials. The ship was built by the Australian shipyard Incat Tasmania Pty Ltd on behalf of South American operator Buquebus. The Wärtsilä equipment was supplied at the end of 2012, and commissioning of the vessel took place in early 2013. A feature of the Wärtsilä waterjets is the high level of efficiency, which allows impressive power to be applied on relatively small jets. Furthermore, the compact dimensions enabled the waterjets to be installed within the ferry’s transom, thus saving valuable space.

Wärtsilä’s propulsion control system for manoeuvring the vessel gives effective, reliable control of all the waterjets and is very easy to use. It is designed in accordance with IMO (International Maritime Organisation) regulations and fulfils the requirements of all leading classification societies. The system controls and indicates the steering angle, bucket position and impeller speed, and can be operated alternatively with joystick control or autopilot. The system’s built-in redundancy makes it safe and robust.

According to Incat, the ‘Francisco’ is now the fastest ship in the world. While there are speed boats that can surpass 58 knots, there is no vessel afloat that can reach these speeds and that is able to carry 1,000 passengers and 150 cars. The ferry will have an operating speed of 50 knots, and in crossing the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) between Uruguay and Argentina at high speed, the ferry will be able to viably compete with air traffic between the two countries.

EXPRESS 5 THE NEW BIGGEST FAST Ferry ON THE WAY TO BORNHOLM

When in 2018 BORNHOLM LINE took over ferry transport to Bornholm, thereby significantly reducing ticket prices - the number of visitors to the island increased rapidly and set new records in 2019. The increase in visitors to the island also had the desired effect. The tourism industry and related businesses on Bornholm have created new growth and new jobs. However, the greater number of visitors to the island created a problem with finding places for them on the ferries. From the outset, it turned out that there were not enough connections on the most important route between Rønne and Ystad. BORNHOLM LINE announced at a press conference in autumn 2019 that the world's largest high-speed ferry will be delivered to Bornholm in spring 2022.

Construction of the EXPRESS 5 ferry

The largest high-speed ferry in the world, Express 5, is produced in the Australian shipyards in Cebu, Philippines and Vung Tau, Vietnam. Currently, around 200 men are working to prepare the high-speed ferry by spring 2022, and as construction progresses, more staff will be assigned to the project. All parts of the ship will be finally assembled at the Philippine Austal shipyard, where the high-speed ferry will be completed and then tested. Construction began on July 8, 2020, and will take almost two years.

The Stena Hollandica is the largest combined freight and passenger ferry in the world. It is the first of two Ropax ships built at the Nordic Yards shipyard in Wismar, Germany. The Hollandica was handed over to Stena Line in May 2010, while its sister ship, the Stena Britannica, was delivered in October 2010. About £375m was invested in the construction of the ferries.

The Hollandica cruises from Harwich in the UK to the Hook of Holland and returns the following day.

The Hollandica has a gross tonnage of 62,000t and a deadweight of 11,600t. It is 240m long and has an overall beam of 240m and a draught of 6.4m.

The ship was built in accordance with Stena Line’s energy savings programme. The hull design was optimised using an advanced coating system. Catalytic converters and engines with better combustion rates help to lower the vessel’s environmental impact.

The Hollandica’s interior, including the public and crew areas, was designed by Figura. The company created the general layout, colour schemes and elevations of the bulkheads.

The vessel has facilities to recycle cardboard, glass and food waste. To reduce the energy used by the ship’s cooling system, all windows are superimposed with solar film that blocks 82% of the sun’s radiant heat.

The Hollandica has inside and outside cabins. The outside cabins have sea views and can be booked for one or two people. The cabins are furnished with bunk beds with boxspring mattresses, quilts and linen. Room amenities include a sofa, table, flatscreen satellite television, wardrobe, telephone and bathroom.

Other accommodation options include outside cabins for three or four people, outside cabins for two people and a child, outside cabins for five people, comfort-class outside cabins for two, captain-class outside cabins for two and captain suite outside cabins for two.

The Hollandica is a smoke-free ferry. Guests can smoke in a special smoking lounge on the outside decks.

Free Wi-Fi internet is available throughout the ship. In the absence of a laptop, guests can use internet terminals in the internet room. The ship has a cinema where three films are screened during the night and one during the day.

The Stena Plus lounge has a selection of complimentary snacks and beverages. The ship has a shopping centre called Stena Shopping which offers gifts, sweets, liquor, tobacco and clothes. Children can spend their time in Teen Town and the Kids Playroom.

The Hollandica has three bars and two restaurants, namely Riva Bar, Taste Wine Bar, Barista Bar, Metropolitan á la Carte Restaurant and Taste Restaurant.

The ship is powered by two 7,200kW MAN 6L48/60CR and two 9,600kW MAN 8L48/60CR diesel mechanical engines. The two CP Alpha propellers allow the ship to cruise at a service speed of 22kt. For auxiliary power requirements, the ship is fitted with three 1,320kW MAN 6L21/31 and one 1,540kW MAN 7L21/31 diesel gen sets. Two 3.1MW shaft generators are also provided.

Built in 2013, and owned by the Argentine ferry company Buquebus, the HSC Francisco is a jet-powered catamaran ferry that operates the 140-mile (225-km) route across the Rio de la Plata estuary between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. With a top speed of 58.1 knots (67 mph; 107 km/h), it is the fastest ferry in the world.

The HSC Francisco , named after Pope Francis, the first Argentinian Pope, was built by Australian shipyard Incat in Hobart, Tasmania. It measures 99 m (325 ft) long by 26.48 m (86.9 ft) wide and has a gross tonnage of 7,109.

It is powered by two GE LM2500 gas turbine jet engines which can run on liquefied natural gas. Each develops 59,000 horsepower (43,394 kW), which in turn drive a pair of Wartsila LJX 1720 SR waterjets, propelling the ship forward.

The vessel can carry 1,024 passengers and 150 cars on each crossing.

The ferry was built in 2011 in Australia and it belongs to the fleet of Fred. Olsen Express since 2018. It travels between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, and it is one of the largest highspeed catamarans in the world !

Where does the Betancuria Express ferry travel?

The largest ferry of Fred. Olsen Express travels between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura . The ferry trip takes around 2 hours . Traveling with Fred. Olsen Express’ largest catamaran is the fastest way to get from the port Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Morro Jable in Fuerteventura.

The route is in operation throughout the year and tickets start at around  €47 . The highspeed catamaran normally departs from Gran Canaria once or twice a day. The earliest ferry usually leaves at 09:30 and arrives in Fuerteventura around 11:30 . The evening ferry departs at 22:00 , reaching Morro Jable at 22:15 .

The World’s Fastest Ship – Built in Tasmania is Christened by Argentina’s President

A few hours ago in Buenos Aires the President of Argentina, Christina Fernandez de Kirchner became the “Godmother” to a vessel built in Australia.

Named  Francisco  in honour of the Argentine born Pope, the 99 metre World’s Fastest Ship, and the first large dual fuel high speed Ro-Ro to use LNG as its primary fuel, was built in Hobart by Incat Tasmania Pty Ltd and delivered recently to South American company Buquebus. 

The Argentinian President was joined by the President of Uruguay Jose Mujica, at the glittering ceremony in Buenos Aires, with both Presidents jointly cutting the ribbon at around 8pm Monday evening Argentina time in front of 1500 invited VIP guests.

The ship,  Francisco ,  commences service tomorrow on the River Plate (Rio Plato) between Buenos Aires and Montevideo. 

Francisco has capacity for 1,000 persons and 150 cars. A luxurious fit out has been incorporated, including an enormous 1,100 square metre duty-free shop and passenger accommodation for economy, tourist, business, and first class plus an exclusive VIP lounge. 

Australian ferry builder Incat Tasmania’s world first high speed dual-fuel vehicle and passenger ferry is the world’s fastest ship having achieved a lightship speed of 58.1 knots – (107.6 kilometres an hour).

This is certainly the fastest ship in the world……of course there’s a few speed boats that could surpass 58 knots but nothing that could carry 1000 passengers and 150 cars, and with an enormous duty free shop on board.

The vessel’s high speed can be attributed to the combination of Incat wave piercing catamaran design, the use of lightweight, strong marine grade aluminium, and the power produced by the two 22MW GE LM2500 gas turbines driving Wartsila LJX 1720 SR waterjets.

The extensive and luxurious interior, designed by Uruguayan Julio Cesar Ortega, is elegant and open in layout. The expansive duty free shop made significant increases to the weight of the interior fitout, however the Incat team worked diligently to maximise weight savings during construction wherever possible.

Incat Chairman, Robert Clifford, currently in Europe, said “Incat is delighted with the efficiency of the design and sure that our customer, Buquebus, are thrilled with the results, enabling the ferry to compete with airline traffic on the River Plate route.” 

Buquebus has clearly demonstrated their preference for Incat technology over a twenty year period and  Francisco  (hull 069) is the eighth Incat vessel to be operated by Buquebus and their associated companies. It is the largest catamaran they have operated, the world’s first dual fuel high speed ferry to operate on LNG as its primary fuel, and the  fastest, environmentally cleanest, most efficient, high speed ferry in the world. 

Incat’s High Speed Record

The fastest previous vessel built by Incat was  Juan Patricio , delivered also to Buquebus, with a top speed at 53.8 knots.  Juan Patricio was delivered in 1996 and remains in commercial service. 

Francisco  is the fourth Incat built vessel with service speed over 50 knots. 

The past three consecutive winners of the Hales Trophy, the Transatlantic Blue Riband record for commercial passenger ships, were all built by Incat. The average speed over the 3 day (unrefueled) voyage of Incat hull 049 was 41.284 knots.

Incat has built 25 High Speed Craft over 5000 gross tonnes with a top speed in excess of 45 knots.

Buquebus orders largest 100% electric high-speed catamaran ferry in the world

Shipbuilders Incat Tasmania has begun construction of what they claim will be the world's largest electric ferry boat. The 130-meter-long unit has been ordered by Buquebús, the company offering passenger services between Buenos Aires and the Uruguayan ports of Colonia and Montevideo through the Río de la Plata. It will have room for 2,100 travelers and 226 vehicles, it was reported.

Plans for the ninth Incat vessel to join the Buquebus fleet were originally announced in 2019. That original design called for two aluminum hulls connected to a bridging section. Its top speed was expected to be around 37.5 knots. Incat Tasmania is expected to deliver the new unit by 2025.

“Originally, this 130-meter ferry was to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, but after some discussions with the client, we were asked to replace the LNG plant with a zero-emission, battery-electric solution,” the company explained in a press release.

Incat Group founder and chairman Robert Clifford explained that “the customer wants this to happen, Incat wants this to happen, and whilst there are matters to be finalized, I am extremely confident that Incat can deliver this ground-breaking ship.”

“Obviously, there will always be the need for power supply in the ports that the ship will be visiting, but we understand that this is progressing positively. The batteries and electric motors have already been confirmed by our suppliers, to ensure that they will be able to deliver the necessary technology in the time frame we need it,” Clifford went on.

“In my experience, unless we see something come in from left field, this is a done deal,” he added.
