'A sad, sad day': St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building burns down Sunday morning

PANAMA CITY − The St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cover Road has burned down. It was among the most historic buildings in Bay County.

According to the St. Andrew Bay Yacht Club Facebook page , the building was empty and no one was hurt. A passerby called 911 about 3:30 a.m. Sunday to report the blaze, and firefighters from the city of Panama City worked tirelessly to put out the flames.

"We have good insurance, and we’ve already filed a claim," the post on the club's Facebook page says. "The Board will be meeting this week to begin the rebuilding process as well as to find ways to keep the Club functioning in some form in the meantime."

The cause of the fire had not been determined as of Sunday afternoon. But the club said the blaze started on the pool side of the building and worked its way east.

"This is a sad, sad day," one person wrote on the Facebook page.

"So sorry to hear about your loss, but I know the club will build back better than ever," another comment wrote.

The St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club is one of the most prestigious yacht clubs on the Northern Gulf Coast. Anyone who has lived in Bay County for any length of time knows how significant this building is to the community. No Name Lounge is no more

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - An excavator demolished the now-closed No Name Lounge on Wednesday.

No Name Lounge originally opened in the early ’80s but closed earlier this year.

Some prior patrons of the bar attended the demolition to relive their memories as the structure fell.

“For me, it just feels like it is the last standing, or was the last standing kind of local bar in this area. So, it is a sad day. It is a sad day for history, it is a sad day for a lot of people that you know, patroned here. They came out, it felt like a family, it’s a tough day,” said Kris Cox, owner of No Name Lounge.

Cox said they tried everything they could to get the building sold and moved to prevent closing down.

She said that, logistically, the sale just didn’t work out.
