Steamboat Timeline: 1765-1948

Age of Invention 1765 James Watt (1736-1819), Scottish instrument maker and inventor, invented a steam engine.
1775 Matthew Boulton (1728–1809), English manufacturer and engineer, financed Watt's steam engine and began manufacturing it.
1783 The first successful steamboat may have been built by French engineer and inventor Claude-François-Dorothée, Marquis de Jouffroy d'Abbans (1751-1832), and run on the Saône River near Lyon, France.
Steamboat Monopoly
in
New York
1787 received from New York State a 14-year monopoly to operate steamboats. The law was passed "in order to promote and encourage so useful an improvement and discovery [as the steamboat], and as a reward for his ingenuity, application and diligence."
1797 entered into an agreement with and to build a steamboat, the engine for which was to be constructed at Roosevelt’s foundry in New Jersey.
1798 Robert Livingston had Fitch's New York monopoly transferred to him. The law said Livingston would be granted a 20-year monopoly, provided he could build, "within twelve months," a boat of 20 tons and have it propelled by steam at the rate of four miles an hour .
1801 President Thomas Jefferson appointed Livingston minister to France. There he met .
1802 Fulton and Livingston entered into an agreement to build passenger steamboats to run on the
1803 Livingston got a two-year extension on the act of . In August Fulton launched a boat on the Seine River.
1806 In October Fulton sailed for New York.
1807 . (more popularly known now as the Clermont) began her maiden voyage up the Hudson to Albany, returning to New York City on August 21.
Challenges to the Monopoly 1808 bought from Robert R. Livingston, his brother, the right to operate a steamboat between New York and New Jersey. , competing with John Livingston. .
1811 . , the steamboat built by "the Albanians," set sail for Albany. Robert R. Livingston took and the Albanians to court to protect the monopoly.
1813 The New Jersey legislature awarded exclusive rights to operate steamboats between New Jersey and New York City, putting him in direct conflict with the New York State law granting a steamboat monopoly on New York State’s waters to Livingston and Fulton.
1814 Ogden petitioned the New York State Assembly, challenging the monopoly.
1824 was argued before Chief Justice in the United States Supreme Court.
Competition 1825 Erie Canal completed between Albany and Buffalo, establishing an all-water route between New York City and the Great Lakes.
1829 Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt established his own steamboat business that would ultimately become , an organization of steamboat owners that sought to minimize competition on the New York-to-Albany run.
1834 Daniel Drew formed "The People’s Line" to operate steamers in direct competition to Vanderbilt and the North River Steamboat Association.
1845 Daniel Drew gained control of the North River Steamboat Association and operation of most steamboats plying the Hudson River.
1851 Hudson River Railroad completed on the eastern shore between New York and Albany, offering a viable alternative to the steamboat for transporting goods and people.
1861 The steamer the "Queen of the Hudson," began her distinguished 55-year career of providing fast and reliable service daily between New York and Kingston. Known for being a fast boat, she set the standard for speed not only for other passenger vessels but also for private steam yachts.
Golden Age of Steamboat Travel 1863 Beginning of the Hudson River Day Line: Alfred Van Santvoord and John McB. Davidson acquired the steamboats and and began offering day-boat service between New York and Albany.
1880 introduced by Day Line and touted as a "fast boat" that could equal or better the speed of the Mary Powell. This friendly battle of words between boat captains was never put to test in an actual river race.
1887 introduced into service on the New York-to-Albany route. Designed as a passenger boat only, its interior décor featured many fine paintings that gained Hudson River Day Line steamers the reputation of being "floating galleries of art."
1906 A "new steamboat for the new century", the was launched into service by the Hudson River Day Line as the first "million dollar" boat to ply the river.
1909 introduced in time for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration held in October of that year.
1912 The steamer Washington Irving was built as the largest and grandest of all of the famous "floating palaces" of the Hudson River Day Line.
1924 The Hudson River Day Line Company launched the steamer Alexander Hamilton, the last of the great side-paddle steamers built for its fleet. It was also the first steamer to be powered by oil instead of coal, which was used to power most of its steamers at the time.
1927 Steamer Peter Stuyvesant entered into service. This was to be the last of the great boats built for the Hudson River Day Line.
1948 The Hudson River Day Line becomes a casualty of the great depression and America’s love affair with the automobile. On September 13, 1948, the Day Line steamboat Robert Fulton made its last run from Albany to New York City, bringing to an end regular steamboat service between these two cities that was begun by Robert Fulton in 1807.

Steamboat Yacht Club

When longtime Steamboat Springs Chef Morten Hoj began looking to open his own restaurant, his wife and business partner, Ellen, had a piece of advice.

“I said, ‘if you are going to get a restaurant, you better make sure to get a beautiful one,'” Ellen said. “If you are going to spend so many hours there, why not get the most inspiring view you can?”

Hoj could not have followed Ellen’s advice any better. In 1999, the couple acquired the Steamboat Yacht Club, a well-known eatery situated in one of the city’s most scenic spots. The Yacht Club is on the north bank of the Yampa River in downtown Steamboat Springs and is directly across from historic Howelsen Hill.

Whether you are running the restaurant or eating there, it simply is one of the best views you can get. Dinner guests can watch night skiing or ski jumping at Howelsen with complimentary house binoculars.

The setting is a key component in Hoj’s three-prong strategy for a successful restaurant – where the spectacular setting, excellent food, and great service create a wonderful fine dining experience. That strategy has served The Yacht Club well as local concierges frequently recommend it to visitors, while loyal locals make it a truly year-round establishment.

A EUROPEAN FLAIR

Hoj has worked for years to perfect his menu and offer the right mix of well-known staples and new dishes. The menu incorporates seasonal changes to take advantage of new creative ideas.

The menu is influenced by what Hoj calls”European Continental flair.” That’s natural, given his background.

A native of Denmark, Hoj is a European-certified chef, waiter and bartender. After receiving his certification, he worked as an executive chef at the Danish embassies in Washington, D.C., and London. In 1978, he immigrated to the United States and embarked on his restaurant career. He came to Steamboat Springs in 1980, and worked for 13 years as an executive chef for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp.

That broad experience helped Hoj develop and refine the formula he employs so well at the Yacht Club.

Dinner entrees at The Yacht Club range in price from $17.95 for the Rocky Mountain Trout to $26.95 for the Filet Mignon Bearnaise. The selection includes seafood, beef, pork, duck and veal dishes.

The Filet Mignon seasoned with chef salt and char-grilled served with Hoj’s bearnaise sauce is a customer favorite. And Hoj promises a steak knife isn’t necessary.

The Bourbon Honey Duck also is one of the most popular entrees. It features a half duckling that is oven baked with a Kentucky bourbon glaze and roasted pecans.

Seafood lovers can choose from the Oriental BBQ Salmon, Shrimp & Escargot Linguini and the Rocky Mountain Trout Almondine. For a more traditional entree, there is the Grilled Pork Chop a la Forestiere, a double pork chop char-grilled and served with a wild mushroom cognac sauce, or the Wiener Schnitzel served with Cabernet Demi Glaze and proper garnish.

The restaurant’s dinner appetizers include mussels, Maryland crab cakes, and Hoj’s unique Escargots topped with Brie cheese, Fried Calamari to Baked Brie with Lingonberries.

The dessert tray features a nightly selection of homemade desserts including Cream Brulee, Chocolate Mousse, Fresh Berries, Ice Cream Dessert and various Cakes

CATERING TO NEEDS

The restaurant also is one of the city’s favorite lunch destinations, and residents voted it as the best place for a business lunch in a newspaper poll.

Soup, salads, sandwiches and burgers are lunch favorites. Hoj’s signature Pear Stilton Salad is a customer favorite.

The restaurant also has a children’s menu and children’s specialty drinks and desserts.

The Yacht Club can accommodate 130 in its two indoor dining areas and another 220 on its outdoor deck. It is a popular banquet and reception site, handling parties of up to 300 in winter and summer.

The restaurant also offers off-site catering for a variety of events including weddings, banquets, conventions and group meetings. It also caters private jets, boats and other recreational activities.

THE WINE LIST

The Yacht Club includes a fully stocked bar and more than 60 wines. A dozen wines are offered by the glass at affordable prices.

Staff members are available to make wine recommendations to go with any entree. This year, Hoj gathered his staff for a wine sampling and then had staff members put together a list of their favorites. Those favorites are cited on the restaurants’ wine list.

“Our staff members really understand wine,” Hoj said. “We thought this would be a good way to help our customers with their selections.”

One of the things that distinguishes The Yacht Club is its experienced and friendly staff.

“The restaurant has a core group of employees who have been with us for several seasons,” Dining Room Manager Armando Arce said. “They know our customers, and they know that when they come in, they are going to see a friendly face that is going to take good care of them.”

The Hojs are especially excited about the latest addition to their strong team. They’ve been blessed with another Danish Chef -Tina Taylor – this year. In addition to the same rigorous certification process Hoj endured, her experience with European and French cuisine will generate many refreshing new menu items in all categories. Her six-month intensive training with a very choosey French Chef in Phoenix has inspired many tasty delicacies already.

Hoj leads the charge. He can be found at the restaurant at all hours seven days a week, working with his staff and interacting with customers to ensure they enjoy their meals. Ellen helps out with the Yacht Club’s interesting marketing strategies.

It’s hard work that has paid off – The Yacht Club is one of the city’s premier restaurants in a setting that is incomparable.

“We wanted to establish a restaurant that offers fine dining at an affordable price with good service : a place where a family or a couple could come and really enjoy a night out,” Hoj said. “I think that is what makes us special – great food and a great staff in a great environment.”

Threads spotted exploring ads, but says 'no immediate timeline' toward monetization

Instagram says it's not testing ads in Threads and has no immediate plans to monetize after multiple developers and reverse engineers uncovered references to ad products in the app's code, including the word "ads" itself, as well as references to sponsored items and ads configuration. A JSON file that developers used, presumably for testing purposes, was also discovered in the public-facing Threads mobile app. One of the developers who uncovered these findings, Alessandro Paluzzi, was also able to force a post to appear as a sponsored post, which he shared on X. The post shows how a "Sponsored" label would appear next to someone's Threads username.

History of Maykop

Foundation of maykop.

The history of Maykop goes back to antiquity. In the 7th-12th centuries AD, the Great Silk Road passed through the territory of Maykop and Adygea. Adyghe, as a separate ethnic group, were first mentioned in the 12th century. In 1557, after the conclusion of the marriage alliance between Ivan the Terrible and the daughter of the Kabardian prince, the Adyghe tribes officially became part of Russia.

The first mention of the Adyghe toponym “Maykop” and related “Maykop heights”,”Maykop gorge”, etc. in Russian documents dates back to 1810. In January - February 1810, a detachment under the command of General of Infantry S.A. Bulgakov made an expedition to these lands. The second time the toponym Maykop was mentioned in documents 15 years later, in the summer of 1825, during an expedition of troops under the command of General A.A. Velyaminov. In the fall of 1825, by his order, a fort was erected on the bank of the Belaya River.

On May 25, 1857, on the site of the present Maykop, a Russian fortress was laid, surrounded by a high rampart and a moat. Until 1864, the year of the end of the Caucasian War, the fortress was an important strategic point during the conquest of Circassia. After the end of the Caucasian War, it gradually lost its military significance and the active development of industry began: pottery, butter, soap, and brick production.
