Explore and enjoy Croatia – ideas for charter

Nautical tourism certainly represents one of the most attractive forms of the overall tourism offer of the Republic of Croatia. We can rightfully say that Croatia, the land of a thousand islands and a beautiful, indented coastline, is a "haven for boaters".

As summer beckons and vacation plans unfold, one destination that consistently graces travelers' must-visit lists is the picturesque Croatia. Blessed with a coastline adorned by islands and sun-kissed beaches, Croatia, guided by the Adriatic Sea, emerges as the ultimate summer hotspot. But with numerous options to choose from, how does one decide?

When is the best month for Sailing in Croatia?

Exploring and navigating the stunning landscapes of Croatia is best experienced during the enchanting months of May, June, September, and October. These time frames present a combination of benefits, including the full operational capacity of tour operators and hotels, a pleasantly warm climate, and more manageable crowds, especially when contrasted with the peak season.

From June to September is the High Season

To make the most of watersports like swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing in Croatia, plan your visit between June and September . During these months, the weather is consistently warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from comfortable to hot, peaking in July and August. If you prefer a hotter climate for sunbathing on the deck and swimming from the boat, summer is the ideal time.

Keep in mind that this period constitutes the peak tourist season . Popular destinations and attractions can be quite crowded, particularly in coastal areas and islands.

These months are perfect for various water-based activities due to warm sea temperatures and calm conditions . Swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, and other water sports are popular choices, making it an ideal time for beach enthusiasts.

Summer in Croatia hosts a multitude of festivals, cultural events, and outdoor concerts, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, music, and traditions. Nightlife peaks during the summer, especially in destinations like Pag, Hvar, Brač, Dubrovnik, and Split.

May and October are Shoulder season

još slika 2.jpg

For a budget-friendly experience in Croatia, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons, specifically in early Spring (May and June) or late Autumn (September to November). These times offer a range of affordable activities. However, keep in mind that certain experiences, dining options, and accommodations may be limited.

During the shoulder season, the weather is generally pleasant. In May and September, temperatures are milder , making outdoor activities and sightseeing comfortable. The sea remains warm enough for swimming and water sports, while the weather is conducive to exploring historical sites, hiking in national parks, and enjoying outdoor dining.

Booking sailing boats during the shoulder seasons is often easier compared to the summer months, with a broader range of options and potentially more reasonable prices .

The shoulder seasons offer an excellent opportunity to explore Croatia's islands in a more family-friendly environment , characterized by fewer crowds and a relaxed atmosphere. Some events and festivals take place during these seasons, offering a unique glimpse into Croatian life, and showcasing local culture, music, and traditions.

Winter is the Low season

Exploring Croatia during the low season, from November to April , provides a unique opportunity for a more nature-focused experience.

During this time, many establishments close, leading to limited choices for boat charters, attractions, and activities. On the other hand, it is perfect for early booking activities and the flexibility to choose dates before the peak season rush.

Historic towns take on a cosy ambience, and cultural sites become more accessible without the usual crowds. While the Adriatic Sea may be too chilly for swimming, it provides a serene backdrop.

Sailing Conditions in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea , the n orthernmost part of the Mediterranean, spans from the Strait of Otranto to the Veneto region in Italy, boasting over 1,300 islands along the Croatian coast .

Tides in the Adriatic are characterized by small amplitudes, while currents are weakly observable, flowing counterclockwise along the Croatian coast.

sailing guide 4 uredene.jpg

The sea's salinity averages 38.30 per mill , influenced by the Po River and lower than the Mediterranean. Sea temperatures fluctuate annually, reaching 22 to 25°C in summer.

Waves are relatively small due to the Croatian coast's configuration, ensuring safe sailing .

Weather conditions are influenced by the general Mediterranean weather , with light to moderate winds prevailing until June, calm in July and August, and stronger winds returning in September.

Winds in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea is known for distinct wind patterns that influence its weather and sailing conditions, including Bura, Jugo, Maestral, Lebić, and Levant.

  • Bura winds from the northeast or east-northeast bring a cold, dry wind often accompanied by clear skies.
  • Jugo winds from the southeast are warm and moist , bringing humid conditions and occasional rain, often associated with unstable weather.
  • Maestral winds from the northwest are a daytime sea breeze during summer , providing cooler and pleasant conditions, particularly along the Croatian coast.
  • Levant winds from the east are moderate to strong easterly winds bringing some rainfall, more common in the southern Adriatic during transitional seasons.
  • Lebić winds from the southwest are warm and moist, potentially causing stormy weather and heavy rain , mainly in the western part of the Adriatic, more common in the fall and winter.

Croatian Wine Culture

The roots of viticulture in Croatia run deep, with evidence dating back 2500 years, showcasing the cultivation of vines and wine processing. From ancient coins to artefacts along the Adriatic coast, Croatia's viticultural tradition has flourished over the centuries, reaching continental Croatia several centuries later.

Today, Croatia stands as a country with a thriving wine culture, where half of the vineyards are dedicated to personal use, emphasizing the genuine appreciation for wine among Croatians.

Croatia boasts over 130 registered grape varieties, many of which are indigenous to the country, contributing to the allure of Croatian wines for those seeking distinct flavours and characteristics.

Croatia is divided into four distinct wine regions, each with its own unique features, challenges, and regulations. Slavonija region is for white wines with full flavour, fruity aromas, and medium-to-high alcohol content, featuring the prominent Graševina variety. Dalmatia region is steeped in tradition, producing red wines like Plavac, Plavac mali, Crljenak, Babić, Lasina, and Pavina . Modern producers are enhancing the wine quality with contemporary techniques. Istria and Kvarner regions are characterized by a blend of mild Mediterranean and colder continental climates, showcasing a mix of continental and Mediterranean grape varieties.

Croatia's Diverse Beer Scene

Croatia's beer culture has gained recognition in recent years. Marked by a surge in small breweries preserving cultural techniques, Croatian beer offers a lively range.

još slika 1.jpg

Karlovačko, founded in 1854, is celebrated for its refreshing character. Ožujsko, with over 120 years of brewing, is known for its crisp taste. Velebitsko offers a rich flavor, Grička Vještica Dark Lager brings roasty notes, and Baltazar Hopy Lager blends tradition with hop flavors. Barba Pale Ale adheres to purity laws, Fakin IPA stands out with 70 bitterness units, and Varionica Pale Ale is multi-awarded. Pan Pilsner boasts Czech Saaz hops, Dva Klasa Wheatbeer is refreshing, and Russian Imperial Stout from Devetka Brewery is a robust option.

Savouring a cold beer in Croatia captures the essence of a laid-back, relaxed lifestyle, fostering memorable moments.

Traditional Mediterranean Cuisine

The Mediterranean diet, recognized as one of the healthiest globally and listed by UNESCO since 2013, draws inspiration from the culinary practices of Mediterranean Sea communities.

Centred on plant-based cooking with fruits, vegetables, fish , meat, whole grains, and olive oil, the diet limits saturated fats, sugar, and refined foods. It encourages fish consumption, favours olive oil, and incorporates regional variations across Mediterranean countries.

In Croatia, the Mediterranean diet is deeply ingrained in the culture, notably on the islands of Hvar and Brač. Recognized by UNESCO, traditional Croatian dishes like 'mišina' cheese, Hrapoćuša cake, makaruni desserts , and Pag cheese contribute to preserving the region's culinary heritage.

Croatia Yacht Charter Types

How much does a yacht charter in croatia cost.

The price of a Croatian yacht rental depends on several factors. It also provides tips for budgeting your trip , ensuring you are fully informed and prepared for your charter.

TIP: Chartering during the high season (July and August) is more expensive than in the low season when you can find great deals . Booking in advance or looking for last-minute deals can also affect prices.

Selecting the Right Crewed Yacht for Your Croatian Charter Vacation

There are quite a few factors to consider when looking for the right Crewed Yacht for your Croatian Yacht Charter Vacations. First and foremost, you have to consider your budget -Sailing yachts and catamarans tend to be significantly cheaper than motor yachts, especially when it comes to fuel consumption which plays a big role on a one-week Croatia yacht charter.

But you also have to pick the right yacht for your needs AND your itinerary; here, things like cruising speed, amenities, cabin layouts, and water toys matter.

Let’s take a closer look at the different yacht types and their advantages or…

Croatia Motor Yacht Charters

For those opting for ultimate luxury and speed , we always recommend chartering a Motor Yacht in Croatia. The Dalmatian Coast is home to Croatia’s largest marina, accommodating large motor yachts and superyachts with ease. Docking at Dalmacija Marina, among many of Croatia’s finest Yachts, is a remarkable experience in itself.

The Croatia Motor Yacht Charters in our catalogs are typically locally owned  and often captained by the owner himself or the owner’s son. This is a huge benefit, guaranteeing a top charter experience based on extensive experience and local knowledge .

Croatia catamaran charters.

There are several reasons for catamarans’ growing popularity in Croatia, one of which is their benefits in comfortable cruising. Catamarans are stable and graceful on the water and we therefore often recommend them for people who suffer from seasickness .

Their efficient design makes them noticeably faster than most sailing monohulls, and their shallow draft is a significant advantage, allowing for navigating in shallow waters and the option to anchor much closer to the beach.

A Catamaran Croatia also has the advantage of having roomy living quarters making them ideal for corporate team-building events, family charters, or a summer vacation with a group of friends.

Croatia sailing yacht charters.

If you wish to sail Croatia, you might consider a sailing yacht. Today, modern sailing yachts offer similar amenities to a motor yacht – except for the speed, which is lower, but so is the price! And, of course, it relies more on the wind, which can be both an advantage and a limitation. While motor sailors can achieve an average cruising speed of 15-20 knots , wind-powered sailboats usually cruise at 8-12 knots when the sailing conditions are good.

Croatia has  small tides throughout the season—1-2 feet depending on the region, so the deeper draft of a sailing yacht is not an issue.

Based on our experience, large groups or families with kids often prefer the soundless and relaxing sailing experience  in the Dalmatian islands.

Croatia Luxury Yacht Charters

When we talk about luxury yachts here, we refer to larger motor yachts or superyachts with high-end amenities and large crews, often with specialized staff such as fitness instructors, massage therapists, and more.

Think Jacuzzi , Spa rooms, Saunas, onboard Gyms and Cinema rooms, large selections of water toys with one or multiple jet skis , fully stocked bars and dancefloors, and we could go on.

Still, the price range within the luxury yacht Croatia category is quite wide, starting around €50,000 per week and reaching into the millions for a high-end mega yacht.

Croatia Large Group Charters (12-71 Guests)

If you’re looking for a yacht charter that can accommodate a large group ( more than 12 guests ), Croatia is the place for you!!

Croatia’s favorable legislation, which allows for larger groups on charters (more than 12 guests), is a rarity within the EU !! -i.e., Greece has a limit of 12 people per charter for all non-cruise ships. And this is the norm.

When it comes to large group yacht charters in Croatia, the options are plentiful. Most charters can accommodate between 12-20 people , but it’s not difficult to find a charter for 30 people, and there are even options for more. For instance, yachts like VARIETY VOYAGER can accommodate a whole 71 guests!

Louis was great from beginning to end and walked me through the whole process. He helped me find a great boat that fit within our time and cost preferences. He explained the differences between the different builds and the pros and cons. Once we selected the boat, he explained and walked me through the whole booking process and answered all my questions. Finally, he checked in with me before, during, and after the charter to make sure everything met our expectations. I can’t recommend Louis enough if you are planning a charter, and I will definitely be in touch for our next trip!

Construction of trimaran makes it a stable and spacious sailing boat offering comfort even for a big crew. Trimarans are well known for their speed and seaworthiness. Sport trimarans can reach speed over 45 knots (more than 50 mph), while standard cruising trimaran can do over 15 to 20 knots.

What Is a Trimaran?

A trimaran, is a multihull sail boat that featur es  two smaller outrigger hulls connected by lateral beams  to a  wider, central  main hull.  The trimaran ’ s unique three hull design offers  sailing enthusiasts the best  of both worlds  -   the sailing capabilities of a monohull  and  the speed of a catamaran. Also referred to as a  ‘ double outrigger ’ , the design of this vessel makes them incredibly stable, buoyant , and fast .

Initially  developed by Austronesian people over four thousand years ago, t rimarans were o riginally used  for fishing in Southeast Asia ; and , are still consider ed the traditional fishing boat in this part of the world .  Trimarans have also been used in times of war and as ferries to transport people, goods ,  and automobiles.

Yet, it wasn’t until a Ukrainian immigrant , by the name of Victor Tchetchet , developed a more  modern ized sailing trimaran in 1945  -which  piqued the interest of other boat builders  who   have since enhanced his  design.  Fast forward to the 1 960’s and  19 70’s  when the  trimaran made a name for itself in the boating world- quickly  gain ing popularity as both  a n exceptional recreational   and racing   sailboat.

Trimaran Charters

Today’s modern trimarans are revered in the boating world for their remarkable speed and seaworthiness. The design and construction of trimaran yacht charter makes this sailboat exceptionally stable, so they are difficult to capsize even in the roughest waters. The ir interior and exterior also offers comfortable sailing; and depending on the size, enough room to accommodate a large crew or group of passengers .

12 Knots offers a terrific selection of exciting trimaran charters available in destinations throughout the Mediterranean, Atlantic ,  and Caribbean. W hether you want to rent a bareboat and sail off on your own or hire a crewed sailboat to ensure a relaxing, stress - free vacation with family or friends , 12 K nots can  assist you in finding  the perfect trimaran  for your trip . At 12 Knots ,  you’ll also  be able to choose from  an impressive collection of the most  popular models such as :  Corsaire  Marine, Motive, Exploder, Neels, Dragonfly, Farrier Marine ,  and  more!

Trimarans, Catamarans, and Monohulls- What’s the difference?

As with any boat  rental you choose for your vacation , it’s important to know the differences in the sailboats a vailable for charter.   While some people will prefer a leisurely vacation  where  they  can  cruise along the coast , there are other s  who  will prefer a more exhilarating  high - sea s adventure flying across the open water .  Learning more about  the different  characteristics and features of these sailing vessels  can certainly help you select the best charter for your needs, purpose , and the type of sailing trip you want to experience .

Monohull

Design, Performance, Stability , and Safety

A m onohull is  a traditional sailboat featuring only one hull and sails. They can be powered by sails or an engine .

All m onohulls are designed with a ballast  keel which is necessary to ensure its balance and stability on the water .

A m onohull ’ s keel will increase displacement (weight of the water moved as the boat sails)  and produce a greater wetted surface area- which will increase the  drag ( resistance  on the water) ; creating a lower , sometimes more favorable , cruising  speed .

The heel (tipping to one side or the other) can be greater than that of a multihull sailboat (up to 20 degrees at speed) which for many passengers ,   can be either exciting or a nuisance .

Space and Comfort

Depending on the size , a monohull can be quite comfortable and spacious.

Although unlike its multihull counterparts , the cabins, bathrooms , and gallery are located in the boat’s one hull (below deck) .

The ‘triangle’ shape of a mon o hull’s bow makes it less space-efficient than a multihull.

Docking and A nchoring

Docking at a marina  is  both effortless and less expensive because of its  maneuverability and width .

Unlike multihulls, t he keel on a monohull doesn’t allow it to anchor close to shore  or sail in shallow waters.

Multihull

Design, Performance, Stability and Safety

Catamarans have two  hulls and trimarans have three. They can be powered by sails or an engine (s) .

Designed without a keel, a  multihull ’ s weight is distributed between the hulls  which creates balance and stability on the water .

A m ultihull’s lack of a keel will produce a minimal wetted surface area, which in turn will cause less drag on the water - creating more lift and speed .

Although multihull sailboats certainly have a reputation for speed,  Trimarans surpass both monohulls and cata marans  in regard to speed; with effortless acceleration, sport trimarans can reach speed s  over 45 knots (more than 50 mph), while standard cruising trimaran can do over 15 to 20 knots .

In terms of stability, a trimaran surpasses that of a catamaran or a monohull. A trimaran’s design of one main hull and two over - hanging hulls makes this vessel safe and more stable -faring much  better i n unpredictable weather /rougher waters and less likely to capsize than its  counterparts.

With a limited heel of only 5-10 degrees at speed , multihulls offer a much smoother and predictable sailing cruise on the water -safer for small children and elderly passengers

A trimaran’s living space is limited because it’s centered on the middle hull. Catamarans  offer a  more spacious  living area ; both offer comfortable cabins located in the hulls .

Docking  and A nchoring

Multihulls are much wider than monohulls, so docking options might be limited and  fees will be slightly higher .

Unlike a monohull, multihulls can anchor in almost any bay. The absence of a keel results in having a lower/shallow draft which enables a cat or trimaran to venture much  closer to shore .

Cost of a Trimaran Rental

On the average , you can ren t a trimaran for as little as $2 , 100  US dollars  per week cruising Marseille - with luxury charters costing up to $14,000 per week  sailing around  Martinique .

With special offers and booking discounts offered at 12 Knots, renting a trimaran is one of the most fun and exciting ways to travel the globe. Whether you decide on a bareboat rental or a hire a crew   for your next vacation  or race , the cost of your charter will always depend on the following factors:

Trimaran  size, age, and model

Type of charter -crewed/bareboat

Destination

Duration of trip

Season/time of year

Amenities

For the best price and value for your money, you’ll want to contact 12 Knots to take advantage of their booking discounts and charter special offers

Best Destinations for a Trimaran Charter

Although   Trimaran  charters  are  available  throughout  regions around the world, The  Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean   are some of the  most popular  destinations  with home bases in the British Virgin  Islands  (BVI),  Martinique , Guadeloupe, Corsica, South of France , Northern France, and   Croatia .

Charter Trimaran Requirements

Bareboat trimaran charters in many countries will require a sailing  license to operate the vessel. However, depending on the destination, a license might not always be  necessary- but documentation stating your experience and sailing history will be requested . Of course, that shouldn’t stop you from chartering a trimaran, as you can always choose to book a skipper for your sailing vacation .

What a totally amazing experience.

“Me and my family loved every minute!

Una cooked amazing food, was always on hand with a cold drink ready or a cup of tea/coffee in the morning! She was always happy and smiling, found us the best restaurants for the evenings and booked whatever we needed!

Antonio was our captain for this voyage and was equally brilliant, both were energetic and happy, they were part of our family for the full adventure!

They had great knowledge of where to go to avoid the crowds, secluded bays to wake up in and enjoy the morning peace! The children loved all the water toys and we swam in the best waters!

We were very sad to leave and cannot wait for next year to do it all again!

Thank you guys so much!”

I would recommend this venture to anyone..

“The crew was very accommodating and my family had a wonderful time. Croatia is beautiful and being in the sailboat allowed us to escape the crowds if we wanted. Chef Oona was delightful and her food was as good as any restaurant; she even played cards with the girls.

Thank you for the experience. “

We had the most wonderful time on our catamaran with iven & una..

We stopped at the most peaceful & relaxing places to swim and were recommended the best places for our dinners. Breakfast & lunch made by Una were also incredible. We will never forget this experience.

Also catamaran sailing as a company were the best to work with. From day 1 of us booking they were so helpful and accommodating. Would recommend this experience with this company & our crew over and over.
