Step Inside the Adastra Trimaran Yacht

Adastra is one of the world's most recognizable yachts; we invite you for a look inside this amazing vessel.

Despite being first launched almost 10 years ago, the Adastra yacht continues to be a marvel. Built by renowned Australian shipbuilders McConaghy Boats , Adastra’s sleek trimaran design has made her one of the world’s most recognizable yachts; in fact, her striking stature saw designer John Shuttleworth receive a coveted Neptune award for most innovative design at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards.

At 139.5ft, Adastra is a comfortable fit in the superyacht category. However, to keep her as light as possible, her designers and builders undertook a structural analysis of all of her major components with virtually every element custom built. Her three hulls are made of e-glass and Kevlar foam, while her superstructure is constructed from carbon fiber with a Nomex core. This combination of ultra-lightweight materials and careful design means that she remains impressively light despite her size, weighing in at 52 tons.

This steadfast commitment to a lightweight design has ensured that the Adastra yacht has remarkably low fuel consumption – so much so, in fact, that she is capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean not once but twice before needing to refuel with a max range of 10,000nm, dramatically reducing her environmental impact. Adastra ’s lightness also has a significant impact on her speed, with the eye-catching yacht boasting a top speed of 22.5 knots, and an all-weather cruising speed of around 17 knots.

The unique vessel was originally custom-built at McConaghy’s Chinese shipyard for Hong Kong-based shipping magnate, Anto Marden, who commissioned Adastra as an explorer yacht for himself and his family. And it appears that she has now served Marden’s purpose – in 2022 she was on the lookout for a new owner to continue her adventure (if they had a spare $10m to hand).

It is not just Adastra’s exteriors that are a design marvel. One of the big challenges in building this yacht came from trying to fulfill the owner’s brief for a lightweight ship capable of navigating even the most challenging conditions, while still retaining all of the luxury and onboard comforts expected of a yacht of this size.

As we mentioned above, a custom solution was the only way to guarantee this, with a pared-back yet luxurious finish provided by Jepsen Designs – a Hong Kong-based studio with Danish architect Inge Strompf-Jepsen at its helm. Adastra’s uber-stylish interiors combine Scandi minimalism with uncompromising practicality: honey-colored wood, cool neutral tones and smooth curved lines flow throughout, with flashes of beachy blue completing the aesthetic.

Adastra offers space for up to nine guests: her full-width owner’s cabin sits in a section of the main hull and is accessed via the saloon, with two additional guest cabins (each containing one double and one single bed), as well as room for a five to six-person crew, found forward of the engine room on the lower decks.

As a vessel designed for long journeys around the world, plenty of space to relax on board was essential for Adastra. Her 52.5ft beam allows for a spacious saloon which accommodates a stylishly curved lounge area on a slightly raised section at the fore, as well as a central formal dining area.

From the saloon, stairs at the front of the ship lead to a foredeck with a roomy sunbed, where extra protection from the midday heat can come from a retractable awning. The equally appealing aft deck offers further lounging space, as well as a dining and bar area perfect for al-fresco meals, which can be enjoyed no matter the weather thanks to a hard-top cover.

Adastra’s plentiful outdoor space can be further extended via the garage door, which folds out to create a diving platform. She also offers additional storage capabilities for not one but two tenders, giving her new owner even more scope for onboard adventure.

From the very beginning, Adastra was a yacht built for adventure. Although she was initially commissioned for island hopping around Southeast Asia, where her owner has several private islands, she is truly capable of navigating virtually any of the world’s oceans. Under Marden’s ownership, she has seen many a destination, including the sunny coasts of Europe, the shores of the Caribbean, and everywhere in between.

The Adastra yacht also has an exceptionally shallow draft of just 3.9ft, allowing her to venture into bays and harbors that would be completely off-limits to other ships of her size, making her perfect for isolated island areas. And of course, her remarkably low fuel consumption means she can head into the remotest of regions for extended periods without a worry.

Another of Marden’s priorities when commissioning a custom yacht from McConaghy Boats was seaworthiness; a good-looking vessel that couldn’t perform in all conditions wouldn’t cut it. Adastra’s trimaran design makes her impressively stable and comfortable, no matter the weather – Marden has reported heading out into ferocious gales that no other superyacht could handle. However, while she may be able to handle adverse conditions, her multiple sun decks do make agreeable weather the best way to enjoy this magnificent vessel.

The luxury trimaran yacht received 2013 World Superyacht Award for most innovative design and was listed for sale in 2019.

Power trimaran concept and superstructure materials of Adastra

The superyacht is based on a power trimaran concept. The designers incorporated luxury into the trimaran design to make it suitable for ocean voyaging.

Structural analysis was undertaken for all the components of the ship. A computer model of Adastra was tested for wave impact, side slamming and impact of the outrigger riding through waves.

The superstructure of the luxury yacht is made of carbon fibre with a Nomex honeycomb core. The hull is of resin infused epoxy with E-glass and Kevlar skins. The interior is composed of carbon and E-glass honeycomb panels and oak veneered cabinets.

The beam of the ship is 16m and the hull draft is 1.12m. It weighs 52t and has a range of 4,000nm.

The naval architect of the superyacht was John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs. Exterior styling was done by John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs and Orion Shuttleworth Design, while the structural design was by John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs and Applied Structural Analysis. Adastra’s interiors were designed by Jepsen Designs, of Hong Kong.

Construction of the lightweight superyacht by McConaghy Boats

McConaghy has built the components of Adastra to custom design to reduce its weight. The in-house built components include fibre hatches, portlights, ladders and hinges, all made of carbon.

More than 350 craftsmen, designers and engineers of McConaghy in both China and Australia worked on the construction of the yacht. The outrigger of the superyacht was specially designed by optimising its height, allowing easier movement on the waves.

Performance of the unique fuel-efficient Adastra yacht

Adastra was designed to be lightweight for low fuel consumption. The superyacht has a maximum speed of 22.5k and its range at 17k is 4,000 miles.

A SiMON 2 integrated ship surveillance system monitors fuel, security, pump sensors, electrical and lighting systems of the ship.

With a freshwater capacity of 2,700l, Adastra has two 800gph freshwater makers. The vessel’s displacement (light) is 49t while at maximum cruising (with 15,000l fuel) it is 64.8t. The yacht consumes 90l an hour at a speed of 13k and 120l each hour at 17k.

Accommodation and luxury features of Anto Marden’s superyacht

Adastra can accommodate nine guests and up to six crew. The accommodation is provided on the below deck, which is partitioned into two sections. The master cabin is located aft.

Two guest cabins, crew accommodation and the galley are located near the engine compartment. The central hull has been flared above the waterline to create some additional space on the below deck.

The main deck houses a saloon which encompassed a lounge area, dining table and navigation station. It provides views of the ocean through a window. The saloon is directly accessible from the master cabin.

The sunbed is on the foredeck while the aft deck has a sofa and bar area and a dining area. There is a raised platform between the saloon and the aft. The pilot house, accommodating the main helm station, is situated on this platform. The station has seating for two.

Tenders on board Adastra

Adastra can accommodate two tenders. A 4.9m space is made available on the aft deck for a tender. A garage below the deck can shelter a 3.1m tender. The fold-out design of the garage door provides diving space.

Engines fitted and anchor system of the Adastra trimaran superyacht

Adastra has a single Caterpillar C18-1150hp engine at 2,300rpm and two Yanmar 110hp outrigger engines rated at 3,200rpm. Two 36kW generators are linked to the outrigger engines and one 26kW generator is installed in the main engine room.

The anchoring system of Adastra comprises three anchors. The 130kg Bruce style primary anchor is deployed out of the starboard wing. The 80kg second anchor is deployed out of the bow with an arm. The third is a stern anchor and weighs 60kg. It is deployed out of the port wing.

The anchors are driven on hydraulics-run winches. The carbon-fibre winches and anchor arms were custom-built. The arms fold inside the yacht, thus remaining invisible.

The vessel features an Alfa Laval fuel cleaning system for cleaning the engine.

adastra luxury yacht panoramic

The future of superyachts is here with Adastra

Look at 42.5m trimaran superyacht Adastra by McConaghy Boats and you see the future – not only of yacht design but also of the industry itself. Her performance and development have global aspects: she has a range of 10,000 nautical miles and was designed in Britain for expatriate owners, who live in Hong Kong, to cruise Indonesia and the world. The interior was designed by a Dane who happens to be the first female commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, and the entire vessel was built in China at a yard owned and managed by Australians. Yet Adastra is not extreme for extreme’s sake.

Her owner, Anto Marden, spent many years in the shipping business and has sailed all over Southeast Asia in his 13.7 metre trimaran Mazinga, designed by John Shuttleworth . He has extensive knowledge of these boats and the stability of their form, and has known Shuttleworth for some 30 years.

About eight years ago, Marden began thinking of a larger yacht with global range. For such a journey he wanted something faster than a sailing boat, and sought an oceangoing powerboat capable of a steady 16 to 18 knots in the open sea and a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 17 knots.

‘The owner had four key requirements for the design of his large power trimaran,’ Shuttleworth says, ‘offshore seaworthiness, comfort, economy of operation and shallow draught.’ The interior was to complement the modern exterior shape and reflect the family’s Asian home. Primarily, it would cruise with just the Mardens aboard plus crew, but two additional cabins were planned to accommodate occasional guests. ‘He clearly wanted a sexy boat with wow factor.’

Focusing on economical range, it would have to be as light and easily driven as possible. Both aerodynamics and hydrodynamics had to be considered, and the exterior would have to be smooth to reduce friction from water passing over the structure. As Shuttleworth, now assisted by his two sons, Orion and Sky, developed ideas, they became convinced that to meet the brief, the vessel’s skin also would have to form part of the torsional strength – a sort of monocoque approach. In the 1980s, Shuttleworth had come up with the concept of what he calls ‘integrated structure.’ This results in boats that are lighter, stiffer, stronger and less likely to twist than previous multihull designs, an arena in which Shuttleworth excels.

Unlike round-the-world speed-record boats with collapsible pipe berths, Adastra would require good load-carrying capacity to provide for luxurious accommodations. Whereas most trimaran outriggers skim the water, her outriggers were expected to be continually immersed as she cut through the waves. Although this increases drag over the skimming type by about eight per cent, it greatly decreases rolling and increases stability. The crossbeam needed to be higher above the water to reduce any impact and noise caused by slamming.

To make the structure as light as possible, the vessel would have to be built in composites, as would much of the interior, but this allowed the design of the flowing shapes that define the futuristic appearance. And to achieve very low fuel consumption, every element was scrutinised. If there was a lighter way to achieve the required function, it was sourced or built from scratch.

This kind of effort required a builder who would collaborate, and Marden and Shuttleworth turned to Mark Evans, co-owner of the Australian shipyard McConaghy Boats. McConaghy, which has been in business for 45 years, has an outstanding reputation for building performance sailing boats, including renowned maxis such as Wild Oats X and Wild Oats XI , Moneypenny and all three Alfa Romeos . The yard also has turned out Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Race racers and has great expertise in carbon fibre.

The yacht’s deck and superstructure are constructed of carbon fibre with a carbon/Nomex honeycomb core, while the hull is an e-glass/Kevlar foam sandwich. Core thickness varies from 20 to 40 millimetres. All the structures were resin infused to ensure high quality and reduce weight. The interior is oak veneer over honeycomb. The most dramatic weight savings, according to Evans, came from changing the makeup of the upper structure from foam/e-glass to carbon/Nomex. ‘It halved the weight of the core and I would guess saved us 200 to 300 kilos,’ he says. The result of all this effort, says Shuttleworth, is that Adastra displaced operates with light ship displacement of 52 tonnes.

‘Throughout the design process, we gave careful consideration to ergonomics and how the boat would be used by the owner and her crew,’ says Orion Shuttleworth. ‘What was particularly challenging was this design was the first of her kind. We had to anticipate problems and find practical solutions.’ This creative approach was recognised at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards, where Adastra won the Most Innovative Yacht prize, and at the ShowBoats Design Awards with an award for naval architecture and a judges’ commendation for exterior styling.

‘The fantastically low weight, along with her easily driven exterior, has resulted in one of the, if not the, most fuel-efficient superyachts ever,’ says Shuttleworth. At light load, the yacht burns 4.5 gallons of fuel an hour to cruise at 10.5 knots, which gives a range of 10,000 nautical miles. At 17 knots she uses 98 litres an hour and has a range of 4,000 nautical miles. Her top speed, delivered by one 1,150hp Caterpillar C18 engine, is 23.2 knots.

‘Although the owner did not require the vessel to be classed, we chose to use the LY2 Code as a guide for safety and fittings. In cases where this was not practical, we developed creative solutions to provide safe alternatives,’ says Orion Shuttleworth.

The large wraparound saloon windows were a structural challenge but they helped the designers lengthen the exterior lines. They also create fantastic views and an atrium effect inside.

Integral to the yacht’s development was adding Danish-born Inge Strompf-Jepsen to the team. Operating an architectural design company in Hong Kong, she mixes Scandinavian style with Asian influences. The idea of exposing the curved carbon-fibre beams running through the deckhead of the saloon to save weight was seen as a positive by Strompf-Jepsen, who thinks the exposed structure gives the feeling of being inside the ribcage of a whale.

The spacious saloon of Adastra is almost circular in shape and offers superb views to those in the lounging and dining areas. A door through the windscreen allows access to a large foredeck sunbed that can be shaded with an awning suspended from carbon-fibre poles set into the deck. The main helm station, which has two seats on a plinth that give a view over the cabin top, is in a raised pilothouse between the saloon and the aft deck. Hatches in the overhead provide ventilation but also allow the helmsman to put his head out for a 360-degree view when docking.

To minimise the helm station’s intrusion on the saloon, it is housed in a wineglass-shaped structure that forms an interesting architectural feature. Behind this is the shaded cockpit, which has an undulating sofa to port and, to starboard, a dining table tucked within the structure of the main hull, the supports for the pilothouse and the rigid bimini top. This covered aft deck on Adastra can be enclosed with a set of sliding side covers.

The open deck running aft provides stowage for a 4.8 metre tender that is launched with a removable carbon-fibre davit. A second three metre tender is stowed alongside a freezer in the garage below the aft deck, which has a door that hinges out to create a bathing platform.

Accommodation on this superyacht is for nine guests and six crew. The master cabin, with access from the deck saloon, is aft in a section of the main hull that flares above the waterline, while the guest cabins are forward of the engine room. Further forward are the crew cabins and galley.

Interior materials are limited to light honey oak and semi-gloss white paint with occasional brushed stainless-steel trim. The soft contrast of the surfaces is augmented by white woven fabrics and blue-and-white ikat fabrics collected by Elaine Marden in Indonesia.

The sponsons can be reached via steps sculpted into the support wings. They look like louvers on a sports car, and from some angles they almost disappear from view. Removable rails fit into the aft edge of the wings and there are fixed handholds. Liferafts slot into quick-release bins on the back edge of the wings.

‘ Adastra takes the power trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted before,’ Shuttleworth says. ‘The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht that meets the needs of a very experienced ocean-voyaging couple and their family has led us to develop new thinking on stability, very low fuel consumption and comfort at sea for this type of craft.’

Some people can't simply settle for a regular, run-of-the-mill superyacht like all the other millionaires and billionaires — they need something a bit flashier to set them apart from the crowd.

For those people, there are yachts like Adastra , a sleek, custom-built trimaran that's currently on the market for a cool $12 million.

The extravagant vessel — which looks less like a yacht and more like something out of "Star Wars" — is built for exploration, according to Burgess Yachts , which has the boat listed for sale. Due to its streamlined shape and lightweight construction, Adastra can travel across the Atlantic twice over without needing to refuel. Plus, Adastra's unique design means it can venture into shallow harbors and get up close to islands, unlike most traditional yachts.

But this multimillion-dollar yacht is built for pleasure, too — it sports multiple sunbathing areas, a diving platform, a lavish main room, three cabins for guests, and space for six crew members.

See inside Adastra:

Adastra, a spaceship-like megayacht fit for a Bond villain, has hit the market for $12 million.

Commissioned in 2012 by shipping tycoon Anto Marden at a cost of at least $20 million, according to Robb Report, the trimaran yacht was built to cover vast distances and cross oceans.

Thanks to its efficient shape, lightweight construction, and 15,000-liter fuel capacity, Adastra boasts a range of 10,000 nautical miles, or roughly 11,500 miles.

That means the 140-foot ship can cross the Atlantic twice over without having to refuel, and its owner has done just that, he told Robb Report.

Plus, the yacht sits less than four feet below the water line, so it can venture into shallow harbors where traditional yachts can't.

After spending several years cruising the globe aboard Adastra, Marden is ready to sell the head-turning vessel and give more attention to his other yacht, he told Robb Report.

The Palma Superyacht Cup

The thrill of the chase

How does it feel to be part of the race crew on board a superyacht? We speak to the pros who’ve helped owners win races and regattas everywhere from St Barths to New Zealand.

From St Barths to New Zealand and Mallorca to Sardinia – the superyacht racing calendar is jam-packed with opportunities for owners who want to put their boats to the ultimate sailing test. Alongside having a boat fit for the challenge – another vital ingredient lies with the race crew.

Will Gibbon should know. He’s the captain on board Velsheda , a showstopping J Class yacht that competes – and often takes first place – in regattas and races throughout the year. So what’s the secret to a winning crew? “We use the same team, week-in week-out,” he explains. “That’s important on a big boat because a big boat means big gear and high loads. You don’t need to go out and get 20 America’s Cup sailors but consistency goes a long way.”

Chemistry is just as important, according to Matt Cornwell, a professional sailor who has raced on the likes of Unfurled and G2 , not to mention competing in four America’s Cup challenges. “Chemistry is one of the number one priorities when putting a crew together,” he says. “A team needs to have good sailors with the right skill set in key positions on the boat, but they also need to work effectively and efficiently together. Plus, we’re there to make sure the owners are enjoying themselves, so it’s important that the crew also comprises of sailors with that mindset.”

The thrill of the chase

When owners become crew

In fact, owners and their guests are often at the heart of the sailing team, helming during racing and filling important roles onboard. “I think they love being part of the team,” says Cornwell. “They also enjoy sending their beautiful yachts around the race course in stunning locations, racing hard-to-beat competitors. Having that experience alongside a team that you enjoy being a part of makes for great memories.”

The Palma Superyacht Cup , one of the most popular regattas and the longest running in Europe – takes place in June. Kate Branagh, event director, explains that there are two distinct types of owners. “ There are those who are very competitive and find the racing the highlight of the event. They optimise their boat, invest in new sails, do extra training days and analytical debriefs after each race,” she explains. “On the other hand, there are owners who love the competition but are happy to invite friends and family and enjoy the fun of the event, both on and off the race course.”

For the owners who are serious about winning, the crew need to spend time prepping the boat ahead of the action. “ Superyachts are designed and primarily used for luxury so turning them into racing machines is often no small task!,” says Cornwell. “A lot of preparation goes into readying the race sails, but there is also plenty to do to make sure the boat is ready to race efficiently on deck, and to ensure that she’s protected from damage that could occur from pushing her limits, plus losing a little weight out of the boat never hurts.”

The thrill of the chase

The serious business of fun

Even the most serious of owners can’t help but have fun, though. And the crew feels the same way. “The focus of superyacht racing, more than any other, is having fun,” says Cornwell. “I’m a professional sailor and when I’m there, I’m racing hard and doing whatever I can to improve the performance of the boat, striving to win, but it’s always a warm and friendly experience. Those memories of smiles, laughter and great times that are made for the owners are shared by us all and I can’t help but enjoy that.”

Gibbon agrees. “Every event brings a special moment. Sardinia is always pretty memorable – all the best sailors in the world are there and the course itself is great -– you’re constantly darting in and out of rocks. Win or lose, if you’ve had a good battle on the water – it makes the event.”

The thrill of the chase

At the St Barths Bucket – there is a big focus on what happens after that battle is over, when both owner and crew can kick back and relax. “Fifteen or twenty years ago, superyacht racing was more a parade of sail than a serious sailing competition,” says Peter Craig, event director. “My, how things have changed! The competitive, must-win attitude at superyacht regattas has ramped up quite considerably since then. The Bucket founders were keen to avoid the win-at-all-cost mentality, and hence came our tagline “win the party, not the race.” For the crew, it seems either if those options – or both – will do.
