Whitsunday blue water sailor Ian Thomson set a lonely record when he sailed alone around Australia last year. His challenge under the Save Our Seas banner gained international media recognition during and after the marathon voyage. He will be chasing further fame next month as an important crew member when Australia’s most famous offshore racing maxi yacht Brindabella now owned by Jim Cooney sets a course to circum-navigate  Australia in under 37 days.

Sailing yacht Brindabella designed by Scott Jutson and launched in 1993 for original owner George Snow is a super fast conventional deep keel yacht and only needs similar wind conditions which Ian Thomson experienced during his successful solo voyage in 2010 to eclipse the present record of 37 days 1 Hour 23 minutes 7 seconds set by David Pescud’s Sailors with Disabilities crew in 2003.

The super sloop named after the Brindabella Range near Canberra has broken and still holds the records in the Audi Sydney to Gold Coast, Sydney to Noumea and Sydney to Mooloolaba races.

Original owner George Snow navigator Lindsay May and Geoff Cropley along with a crew of high profile blue water racing yachtsmen also have the distinction of averaging 14.03 knots the fastest ever recorded for a conventional ballast yacht in the 65 year history of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race.

Owner Jim Cooney will be challenging previously uncharted waters when he and Ian Thomson set sail in the 2011 Qantas-Link Brisbane to Gladstone race on Good Friday April 22.

S/Y Brindabella, while setting line honours records in other Australian blue water classics will line up against dual line honours winner the Peter Harburg owned and Mark Bradford skippered Black Jack and Bruce Absolon’s Hamilton Island Yacht Club sloop Spirit of the Maid and the 2010 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week ‘Gun Boat’ in a big boat shoot out for the line honours trophy.

Size and sail power suggests the Peter Millard skippered Lahana which broke the Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel race record in 2010 heads the pre-race favouritism along with smaller maxi-chaser Black Jack while Brindabella, Spirit of The Maid and the Marcus Blackmore skippered Hooligan have the speed potential, crew endurance and skill to set the pace at the head of the fleet.

This annual coastal classic will serve as a full scale evaluation trial for the 17 member crew Brindabella crew before they set sail from  Sydney in May for the anticlockwise passage around Australia’s coast in the bid to add another record entry in the log book.

It will be a physically demanding challenge for owner Jim Cooney, Ian Thomson and the Brindabella crew but at least they have the proven yacht and if any yacht can do it then Brindabella can.

Brigid Dighton & Johnny Hilhorst: The Visionaries Behind Brindabella Sailing

Bringing their shared passion for the sea and a desire to create lasting experiences, Brigid Dighton and Johnny Hilhorst took on the role of custodians of Brindabella in early 2021. Their journey began with the idea of acquiring an ex-racing maxi yacht, influenced by a variety of factors that shaped their vision.

Years ago, Brigid and Johnny embarked on a journey to create a business that would embody their core values. These values encompassed expressing creativity, embracing family flexibility, forging meaningful connections with others, and providing unforgettable experiences. It was their dream to find a venture that seamlessly integrated their love for the sea and all its wonders.

With the acquisition of Brindabella, their dream became a reality. Brigid and Johnny’s vision for Brindabella Sailing is to provide a remarkable experience that captivates the senses, fosters connections, and creates memories that will endure.

Through their stewardship, Brigid and Johnny have transformed Brindabella into an iconic symbol of excellence, offering an unparalleled sailing experience for individuals, groups, and corporate clients alike. Sailing on Brindabella

Sailing on Brindabella with Brigid and Johnny and the Brindabella Sailing Crew was such a fantastic experience. I have always wondered what it would be like to sail on a Maxi Yacht, so it's all the more special given Brindabella is a Sydney to Hobart winner! I highly recommend this sailing experience which is capped off with some very yummy tapas and bubbly. – Marie Marie

Najad 405, BRINDABELLA

Najad 405, BRINDABELLA 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

Still with her original owner, BRINDABELLA is a Najad 405 from 2009. A refinement of her forerunner, the 400 (itself a very popular yacht), the 405 featured a number of key improvements adding to her sailing performance and enjoyed a more contemporary feel below deck. BRINDABELLA was built for an experienced owner; the brief was for a well-specified yacht for independent offshore and bluewater cruising. A brief she fulfilled with ease.

Sales Video

Owner’s Comments

We have owned BRINDABELLA from new. She is a high specification yacht fitted out for bluewater cruising, including a generator and watermaker both fitted by Najad at the time of build.

We have cruised her from Sweden to the UK and regularly to the west coast of France. More recently, we have cruised from the UK to the Mediterranean, covering France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. During this time, we have found her to be a wonderful cruising yacht that is both fast and comfortable.

Builder’s Comments

Inheriting the same Najad family genes from more recent new launches, the new Najad 405 is a natural development of the out-going N400. The rig is taller, in line with the overall enhanced performance and sportier characteristics now set in space across all of Najad´s newest model range. The balanced spade rudder will have no skeg and offer a light feeling to the helm, making for easier tacking and less stressful close quarter manoeuvres.

Times Past: Canberra boat takes line honours in Sydney to Hobart

On this day in 1991, The Canberra Times reported on the pocket-maxi yacht, the Brindabella, taking line honours in the ruthless Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

The pale blue racer, with beaming owner-skipper George Snow at the helm, was greeted by more than 300 crammed pleasure craft and thousands of on-shore Tasmanians as she cruised past the finishing line on the Derwent River.

Awaiting Mr Snow in Hobart - a fax from the ACT's chief minister, Rosemary Follett, that read: "Congratulations to you and the crew of Brindabella (especially the fellow Canberrans) on your magnificent line-honours win. You have done Canberra proud again! Have a great New Year."

Brindabella, competing only in her second Sydney to Hobart, completed the 630 nautical mile journey at 2.14 pm, posting the official time of three days, one hour, 14 minutes and nine seconds. Named after the ranges surrounding Canberra, at 65 feet it was the smallest yacht to take line honours since the converted 12m American Eagle, in 1972.

The front page of the paper on this day in 1991.

A sunburnt but elated Mr Snow said light winds off Tasmania's south-east coast had helped Brindabella break away in the closing stages of the race.

He admitted to having butterflies in his stomach as they entered the Derwent River hoping that the wind would not let them down.

Sold – Jutson 80 ‘Brindabella’

Brindabella needed no introduction when her owner decided it was time to sell. As a previous Sydney to Hobart Line Honours winner, this iconic yacht holds a firm place in Australian history and not just in sailing circles.

Brindabella also holds a very special place for the YOTI team as one of very first boats sold after YOTI was founded by Tim Vine and John Cowpe in 2008. We were honoured to have once again had the opportunity to help this grand old dame find a new home.

Her previous owner was very happy she had been bought by someone who not only wanted to preserve the name and great history of this boat but ensure that many more people could experience “The People’s Maxi” into the future and her legacy would continue. In fact, her new owners have just had preliminary acceptance by the Australian Maritime Museum to have her recognised as an historically significant vessel.
