While the exterior of the yacht has been enhanced, Naval Architect for Simonis Voogd Design, Alexander Simonis, tells us this:

“This is a true power cat design, unlike its predecessors which were derivatives from the sailing versions in their respective sizes. This allowed us to design without the constraints imposed and improve the design further for the purpose of fuel efficient cruising.

Through optimisation of the hull shape and the superstructure design we achieved to get lower hydro and aero-dynamic drag coefficients, allowing us to create 30% more internal volume and better performance.”

Princess Oxana , a Leopard53 PC , is listed for sale by Galati Yacht Sales with an asking price of $1.8 million. The 2023 power catamaran has just 200 hours on its Yanmar diesels. The power cat also has a three-stateroom, three-head layout with accommodations to sleep six guests for extended cruising.

Designed for watersports fun, Princess Oxana has a hydraulic swim platform that doubles as the yacht’s tender stowage and lifts to deck height. Stepping into the 53-footer’s cockpit, there are two seating options with a bench seat with L-shaped backrest to starboard and an L-shaped sofa and fixed table to port. Adding a few loose chairs around the table creates alfresco dining six.

Wide side decks with high stainless-steel rails flank the main deck leading to the foredeck with two sun pads, a perfect spot to enjoy morning mimosas before catching some midday sun. There’s also access from the salon via a door on centerline.

Stairs to starboard lead to Princess Oxana ’s flybridge, which has a two-person sun pad with a backrest aft and to port. Just forward is a U-shaped dinette with space for six to enjoy alfresco dining under the flybridge hardtop. To starboard is a wet bar, a refrigerator, an ice maker and a grill. The upper helm station is also to starboard with a bench seat and there is additional companion seating across from the helm.

The volume created by the Leopard 53 PC’s sizable 25-foot beam is most apparent in the salon. The galley aft separates the salon and cockpit, with a C-shaped counter to starboard and a full-size refrigerator, sink and countertop to port. The galley has a microwave and a four-burner cooktop for creating meals.

Forward, the salon has an L-shaped sofa and ottoman to port with a three-person sofa to starboard. The vessel’s all-weather helm station is all the way forward and to starboard and has bench seating.

Belowdecks, there are three staterooms and three heads. The master stateroom is in the starboard hull and has a queen berth and an en suite head with his-and-hers vanities. The two guest staterooms are in the portside hull, both of which have queen berths and en suite heads.

Power for Princess Oxana comes from twin 370 hp Yanmar 8LV370 diesels, which we previously reported give the 53 PC a 25-knot top speed and a cruising speed of 17.5 knots. The engines were serviced at 175 hours and are still under 200 hours, according to Galati Yacht Sales.

Some other notable features include an Raymarine Axiom 7-inch multifunction display, a transom shower, Starlink Satellite Internet/TV System, AIS, a washer-and-dryer combo, a Side-Power bow thruster and a Yacht Controller for remote docking.

It’s worth noting the purchase of Princess Oxana includes a transferable 5-year service/warranty program.

Crew Information

Captain: Travis Townsley

Captain Travis has been known to say he likes Fast Cars and Slow Boats… Born in Georgia, but raised in Texas, Travis spent the early part of his career working on race car teams (and racing whenever he got a chance). He has worked on everything from Vintage Can Am cars, Formula Fords, Toyota Atlantic, F2000, World Challenge, and Nascar Super Trucks. Life in the fast lane certainly was a good time, but there was something about the calmness, and challenges, of sailing that caught his attention. He eventually hung up the tools and helmet, and bought himself a Hobie Cat and learned to sail. He also started and grew a family business with his Father and 3 siblings, manufacturing product that was supplied to the Land Yacht industry (motorhomes). Raising two kids kept him on land but once they became adults themselves, he knew that a life on the ocean was where he wanted to be. While the kids were home, he started them off on a Sunfish and then went through owning progressively larger monohulls. Once the kids graduated and moved on to college, he and his wife bought a 47’ monohull which they lived aboard for over a year before deciding to change their path in life and purchase RumAway, a 53’ luxury catamaran so that they could share their passion with others. He still enjoys driving a Fast Car now and then, but Slow Boats (sailboats), and life in the warm, blue waters of the Caribbean, are what brings him joy. He looks forward to sharing that joy with you on RumAway. Tara has always had a love of the water. You could say it’s in her blood; she was born on a boat (technically she was born at the hospital, but came “home” to a boat). After spending her first few years on a boat in Santa Cruz Harbor, California, her parents decided keeping Tara out of the water and on the boat was more than they could handle; so they sold the boat and bought a Land Yacht (motorhome). The next few years were spent living on the road, seeing the sights. (If you can’t tell, her parents were borderline gypsies, so it’s no surprise that Tara would one day be drawn back to life on the sea). Tara moved around quite a bit before settling in Texas. Corporate America was Tara’s career path where she has worked for several major corporations that sent her travelling all over the world implementing various systems. Tara has always been passionate about cooking, and it’s no surprise that her first job was in the food industry. She got sidetracked with other positions in Corporate America before going back into the food industry for the last 10 years of her career. To say again that Tara is passionate about cooking is an understatement. Tara finds great joy in preparing tasty meals for others to enjoy. She looks forward to sharing with you her creations in the galley. Tara and Travis were MFEO (made for each other). After raising two children of her own, it was in Texas where she met Travis. Travis had a 30’ monohulled on a local lake, and it wasn’t long before Tara was back on the water, where her life started. Travis and Tara were the perfect match; Travis had a dream (to live on a sailboat) and Tara had a plan (how to make it become reality). After surviving (actually thriving) raising 4 teenagers with their new blended family, Tara and Travis set their sights on the prize; to live on a boat. They have been “captain and crew” for many groups bareboating in the islands, and the one common thing that everyone said is “Y’all are so good at showing us a good time and taking care of every last detail, you should do this for a living”. Description

The Catana 53 sailing catamaran has been in production since 2019. The body of the model is made of fiberglass, its length is 16.18 meters, width - 8.65 meters, and draft - 1.43 meters. International CE (A) certification allows the vessel to operate on the high seas. The model has twelve seats and six berths for passengers.

The cockpit of the vessel is equipped with a closed cockpit with a hard roof, equipped with two observation hatches. Along the sides there are walkways fenced with metal railings and leading to an open bow platform, where there are several spacious sun loungers. At the stern of the model, there are two water access platforms with removable ladders and metal handrails, as well as a towing attachment. The outer cockpit area is equipped with a soft sofa for several people, a removable table and two aerators.

On the port side, inside the cockpit, there is a captain's post with an electronic control panel, an adjustable steering wheel and a swivel chair, and behind it there is a corner soft sofa and two wooden dining tables. On the starboard side, there is a galley with a refrigerator, oven and electric ovens, a sink and several boxes for food.

The ship's cabins are equipped with beds for two people, wardrobes, spacious lockers for personal belongings, compact desks with soft armchairs, as well as separate rooms with bathrooms and showers.

The sail area of the Catana 53 is 165 m². The ship is equipped with two stationary motors with a power of 75 hp. The capacity of the fuel and fresh water tanks is 800 liters.

Gunboat 57 Vai Vai is not your average charter cat.

One of the many perks of my job as a yachting writer is that I get to sail aboard a wide variety of boats. I especially love ripping off speed runs aboard some the world’s largest (and fastest) offshore race boats . Now, the truth is, the only reason I’m allowed aboard is because I’m just a humble journalist. But the blistering speeds those boats are capable of is addictive.

After spending a little time with the VaiVai’s owner Jeff Hager earlier this summer, all I can say is Vai Vai ’s speed potential makes it possible to cover way, way more ground than a more conventional charter boat. And since everyone (even the helmsman and sail trimmer can hang out in main bridgedeck area, and the catamaran never heels more than a few degrees) more speed doesn’t mean less comfort.

In fact, the indoor/outdoor living aboard Vai Vai is next level. The wrap-around windows provide protection from the high winds and spray such a fast boat produces. The 360-degree view is amazing while the massive roof provides essential sun protection. And the sheer size of the bridgedeck is soooo much bigger than what you’d find on a 57-foot monohull. And the nice thing about having the galley and living cabins in the hulls is that each cabin is particularly private.

But, let’s fact it. This boat will not appeal to anyone who rates a charter boat based on how over-the-top-“luxurious” the accommodations are. This is a high-performance sailor’s catamaran for people who don’t want to give up the sheer thrill of sailing on a charter.

The boat that will bring oysters and other raw bar staples out to your boat at anchor is one of the ... [+] many reasons to stop in Cuttyhunk on a charter aboard Vai Vai.

And if you’re lucky enough to book a week aboard VaiVai before she heads south in the fall, be sure to stop for oysters on the tiny island of Cuttyhunk. I guarantee you’ll beat every other sailing charter boat in Newport’s fleet.

Guatemalan police on Wednesday arrested seven Guatemalans accused of having smuggled 53 migrants from Mexico and Central America who died of asphyxiation in 2022 in Texas after being abandoned in a tractor-trailer in the scorching summer heat.

They were the latest arrests after years of investigation into the deadliest tragedy of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico.

The dead included eight children.

Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez told The Associated Press the arrests were made possible after 13 raids in three of the country’s departments.

They included Rigoberto Román Mirnado Orozco, the alleged ringleader of the smuggling gang whose extradition has been requested by the United States.

Police also seized vehicles and cash and rescued other migrants during the operations, they said in a statement.

“This is a collaborative effort between the Guatemalan police and Homeland Security , in addition to other national agencies, to dismantle the structures of human trafficking, one of the strategic objectives of the government President Bernardo Arévalo in order to take on the phenomenon of irregular migration,” Jiménez said.

Six people were charged previously.

Homero Zamorano Jr., who authorities say drove the truck, and Christian Martinez were arrested shortly after the migrants were found.

Both are from Texas. Martinez later pleaded guilty to smuggling-related charges. Zamorano pleaded not guilty to smuggling-related charges and is awaiting trial.

Four Mexican nationals were also arrested in 2023.

Authorities have said the men were aware that the trailer’s air-conditioning unit was malfunctioning and would not blow cool air to the migrants trapped inside during the sweltering, three-hour ride from the border city of Laredo to San Antonio.

When the trailer was opened in San Antonio, 48 migrants were already dead.

Another 16 were taken to hospitals, where five more died.

The dead included 27 people from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, seven from Guatemala and two from El Salvador.

Authorities have alleged that the men worked with human smuggling operations in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, and shared routes, guides, stash houses, trucks and trailers, some of which were stored at a private parking lot in San Antonio.

Migrants paid the organization up to $15,000 each to be taken across the U.S. border.

The fee would cover up to three attempts to get into the country.

Orozco, the alleged ringleader, was arrested in the Guatemalan department of San Marcos, on the border with Mexico.

The other arrests occurred in the departments of Huehuetenango and Jalapa.

The police identified the gang as “Los Orozcos” because several of those arrested are family members and carry that surname.

“Said organization illegally housed and transferred hundreds of migrants of different nationalities to the United States, collecting millions of quetzales (the national currency) through several years of operation,” said the Guatemalan government.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.

The other guests

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

Almost $90bn poured into US money market funds in the first half of August as investors sought to lock in attractive yields that could outlast an expected interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month.

Money market funds, which hold cash and short-dated assets including government debt, pulled in net inflows of $88.2bn between August 1 and August 15, according to flow tracker EPFR — the highest figures for the first half of a month since November last year.

Most of the inflows originated with institutional investors — large entities investing on behalf of others — rather than retail investors, the data shows.

Industry participants said the rush of money reflected institutional investors positioning for a fall in interest rates from the current level of 5.25 to 5.5 per cent as soon as next month.

Yields on Treasury bills typically decline ahead of an expected interest rate cut, and drop further immediately after rates go down, they added, but money market funds can offer higher rates for longer because they have more diversified holdings.

“The institutional increase that we’ve seen has really only just been the last couple of weeks,” said Shelly Antoniewicz, deputy chief economist at The Investment Company Institute. “The reason for that is it’s pretty clear now that there is a much greater chance that the Fed will ease in September.”

The inflows into money market funds so far this month highlight how the vehicles are still competing with shares and short-dated bonds as a haven for investors’ cash.

Money markets funds had a blowout 2023 as rates rose to a 23-year high to combat inflation. Net inflows reached a record $1.2tn last year, according to EPFR data, helped by significant demand from retail investors. Industry participants say institutional investors are following suit.

“This is something that happens quite regularly when interest rates start to go down,” said Deborah Cunningham, chief investment officer of global liquidity markets at Federated Hermes. “As those direct securities’ yields have ratcheted down with expectations of further Fed rate cuts, [investors] would rather keep the yield of a money-market fund for a longer period of time.”

US money market funds are allowed a so-called weighted average maturity of up to 60 days, meaning they can hold a diverse range of securities — from debt maturing in three or six months’ time to much shorter-dated assets.

The average US money market fund currently yields 5.1 per cent, according to Crane Data. By comparison, a one-month T-bill yields a slightly higher 5.3 per cent and a three-month bill 5.2 per cent. So far, the overnight lending rate is 5.32 per cent.

However, “it’s the direct securities, like overnight commercial paper, overnight certificates of deposit . . . [that] are going to instantaneously change if or when the Fed starts to ease”, said Antoniewicz, referring to an anticipated decline in yields on short-dated assets traded directly in the market.

While the inflows have continued this year, they have slowed as interest rates have stabilised. Money fund managers and strategists say there are already signs of retail investors branching out into riskier asset classes such as equities.

However, they noted that August’s inflows were an early sign of more institutional money flowing into the asset, as big companies that need ready access to capital for operations also seek a yield on their cash.

“If you are a cash manager for a large institutional corporate that has a substantial amount of cash in the market, 10 basis points, 20 basis points can make a huge difference, even if it’s only for a month,” said Cunningham.

Market participants also said they expected the Fed’s rate cuts to be gradual rather than rapid and deep, which would mean money fund yields drift lower over an extended period of time.

Weak US jobs data at the start of the month sparked fears of an imminent recession. More robust economic data has soothed those concerns, but markets are still pricing in just under one full percentage point of cuts by the end of the year.

However, John Tobin, chief investment officer at Dreyfus, noted that “every rate cut in recent history has been a function of lowering rates to get to zero because there’s been a financial crisis”. By contrast, he said, “here, assuming that’s not the case, we’re now talking about terminal rates with at least a 3 [per cent] handle”.

That implied that money market funds could continue to attract assets long after the Fed cuts rates. This time, “money funds are better positioned”, he said.

Still, industry participants accept that money market funds’ ability to attract persistent inflows relies on the durability of the US economy allowing the Fed to gently cut the cost of borrowing.

Cunningham described rates above 3 per cent as “the magic hurdle”. “If you start dipping below 3 per cent, that’s when people start getting a bit itchy about it and going into other products.”
