Destination Westport: 123 Foot Long “Temptation” Superyacht Anchors off of Cockenoe Island

Temptation , a 123 foot long Palmer Johnson motor yacht, has made Westport it’s latest port-of-call, adding to the list of superyachts calling Westport water's “home” for a few nights - with Temptation seen from Compo Beach throughout the end of this week.

The yacht is owned by David F. Dyer - a former President of J.Crew, CEO of Tommy Hilfiger, and most recently the President of Chico’s - and is typically chartered during the summer with several New England ports-of-call, like Boston, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. The vessel remains in the south for the winters, with ports-of-call surrounding Florida and the Bahamas. Summer charters will run guests $70,000 per week, while winter charters could be as high as $77,000 for the week.

The 37 meter long vessel has room for eight guests and six crew members, with water toys including a 32 foot Edgewater center console tender, paddle boards, two waverunners, and snorkeling equipment. It’s top speed is 17.5 knots with a cruising range of 2,500 nautical miles. Built in 2005, the boat was last sold in 2017 - having an asking price of $5.7 million, the final sale price wasn’t announced. The boat was refitted in 2017 for $1.5 million.

It’s unknown why the vessel has chosen Westport as its anchor community, however the waters - protected by Cedar Point, Cockenoe Island, and Compo Beach - make for a calm option during a rough weather week, in addition to allowing the guests easy access to Westport restaurants and amenities via their tender vessel.

Temptation isn’t our first superyacht visitor - In May, the 183’ Rosehearty sailing yacht dropped anchor in the community - with its owner, a native Westporter, returning home for a visit.

With a deep water shoreline and easy community access, Westport may just be the next port of call for the big boats and their guests.

The yacht was owned by David Dyer who was President of J-Crew, and CEO of the global fashion house of Tommy Hilfiger. He sold it in December of 2022 with an asking price of 6.495 million dollars.

The Temptation can accommodate up to 8 passengers in 4 cabins and has 5 crew.

Of course a ship of that magnitude has to have some extras, and it certainly does. It was just refitted in 2017, to the tune of 1.5 million. How about this for amenities?

Motor Yacht

Temptation is a semi-custom motor yacht launched in 2005 by Palmer Johnson Yachts in Sturgeon Bay Wi, United States and most recently refitted in 2012.

Palmer Johnson has emerged from modest beginnings in 1918 as a builder of wooden fishing boats to become a world leader in the construction of luxury high-performance superyachts.

Temptation measures 37.50 metres in length, with a max draft of 2.30 metres and a beam of 7.46 metres. She has a gross tonnage of 160 tonnes.

Temptation has a GRP hull with a GRP superstructure.

It is not necessary to live, it is necessary to sail; This is the firm belief of Italian design company Nuvolari & Lenard. No stranger to high-profile yacht design, the studio has stamped its distinctive style on a number of the ocean’s biggest and brightest.

Temptation also features naval architecture by Palmer Johnson Yachts.

Temptation is a semi-custom PJ 123 model.

The PJ 123 Fly Series presents a line of 37.5 metre fibreglass Raised Pilothouse motor yachts with the same "large yacht" mentality as the PJ Sports Series. The luxury yacht features a visionary layout and interior design by Nuvolari & Lenard. Amongst the design highlights of the PJ 123 series is the generous sundeck with crowns the vessel, equipped with BBQ area, sun pads and Jacuzzi.

Temptation has a top speed of 19.00 knots and a cruising speed of 13.00 knots. She is powered by a twin screw propulsion system.

Temptation has a fuel capacity of 28,769 litres, and a water capacity of 1,892 litres.

She also has a range of 2,500 nautical miles.

Temptation accommodates up to 8 guests in 4 cabins. She also houses room for up to 6 crew members.

Luxury yacht Ferretti 530 was very keen to undertake in collaboration once again with AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project . The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.

In the main line 1.e4 c5 2.c3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.cxd4 d6 7.Bc4 Nb6 8.Bb5 is not very popular nowadays because after thousands of games Black is not considered to have many problems. However, winning chances are scarce for the second player and it's no surprise that ambitious players like the look of 8...Bd7!? :

On the American Swiss circuit, IM-elect Marc Esserman is well known for his excellent preparation in the Morra Gambit. In Esserman - Ramirez , Black takes the practical road and plays 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 Nf6 . I always thought this to be very sensible, especially as White is clearly committed to lines with d2-d4 (not that that is anything remarkable, but it's something). After 4.e5 Nd5 5.Nf3 d6 6.cxd4 e6 the game continuation 7.Nc3 seems inaccurate to me because of Ramirez's 7...Nxc3 8.bxc3 Qc7 9.Bd2 Nd7 with a kind of accelerated Gallagher system.

A seemingly quiet system for Black beginning with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3 d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.d4 Nf6 6.Be3 cxd4 7.cxd4 Bb4+ is actually a rather ambitious attempt to get a good knight vs. bad bishop situation by trading light-squared bishops after 8.Nc3 0-0 (another modern concept is 8...Bd7 9.Bd3 Bb5) 9.Bd3 b6 10.0-0 Bxc3 11.bxc3 Ba6 :

In Manik - Navara this worked remarkably well.

Rossolimo [B30]

Logic in chess can be a strange thing. After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.Nc3 Qc7 Black avoids doubled pawns. After 5.0-0 a6 Black puts the question to White's bishop, much like White does in the 4.Qc2 Nimzo Indian. 6.Bxc6 White captures the knight to gain time:

Now 6...dxc6 looks remarkably inconsistent, but it is actually a logical move! See the fascinating heavyweight struggle Shirov - Ivanchuk .

Moscow Variation 3...Nd7 [B51]

The trend towards the early capture on d4 continues and in A.Ivanov-Ehlvest we look at 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ Nd7 4.d4 cxd4 5.Qxd4 a6 6.Bxd7+ Bxd7 7.Nc3 Rc8 8.0-0 e5 9.Qd3 h6 10.Nd2 , which is more direct than White's play 10.Rd1 Nf6 11.h3 as we've looked at before. A very sharp games ensues and the game remains in dynamic balance in a complicated ending until an ill-timed capture hands the initiative to Black.

Black can also keep the position closed with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ Nd7 4.d4 Ngf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bxd7+ Nxd7 :

I have warned against the move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 d6 4.0-0 Bd7 5.Re1 a6?! Before on this site. In Safarli - Sharafiev White does not seek immediate punishment and plays 6.Bf1 . In this game I highlight move order issues for both sides en route to an uncommon position where White deals with the strategic issues better than his opponent.

Last month we looked at 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 d6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Qxd4 Bd7 6.Bxc6 Bxc6 7.Nc3 Nf6 8.Bg5 e6 9.0-0-0 Be7 10.Qd3 . I still recommend 10...Qa5! here, but in Balogh - Drenchev Black plays 10...0-0 11.Nd4 Qa5 12.h4 (12.f4 is probably better) 12...Rfc8!? and scores an upset with a cute finish.
