Gelliswick beach

A small shingle beach just west of milford haven. the road access winds its way down the hill and continues all along the shore, past the yacht club, so access couldn’t be easier..

To the east end is Hubberston Fort, built in the 1850s to defend the haven from the French; it never fired a shot in anger but was used as a training base during the First World War.

If you’re planning to visit, check out the  tide times  to make sure you’ve plenty of beach to play on and that you don’t get cut off by the incoming tide!

What's at Gelliswick beach?

Concrete ramp on to shingle: 1:15 to 1:7 for 40 metres, steepest at the top.

Pembrokeshire Coast Walk 15. Milford Haven to Sandy Haven

Our plans to make progress with a series of walks on the Pembrokeshire coast this year were thrown into disarray when the coronavirus / Covid-19 global pandemic resulted in the UK implementing a national lockdown in March 2020. In Wales non-essential travel was limited to 5 miles from a home address and activities such as touring and holidays were outlawed.

The message from the Welsh Government agencies to the public was “Visit Wales…Later”. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority ran a campaign advising the public “stay home” and “Pembrokeshire, It’s not for you”.

gelliswick yacht club

As the Covid-19 virus meant that all the normal activities of society were placed on hold for an extended period, for those who like to spend as much of their free time in the great outdoors this was particularly dispiriting. The lockdown regulations were relaxed in August 2020 and so, almost 5 months behind schedule, we were able to make plans to resume our series of short walks on the Pembrokeshire coast.

So with restrictions lifted, we resumed our coast path walks in mid August. However new rules were in place and so these 2020 walks will be remembered for new measures with social distancing signs placed along routes and hand sanitiser being an essential carry item for use after handling gates and stiles.

gelliswick yacht club

The start point for Walk 15 is Milford Haven marina, heading westwards to reach the tidal inlet of Sandy Haven and covers just under 5 miles of coast path. There’s a low tide crossing at Sandy Haven which needs to be carefully timed by those walkers intending to continue towards Dale, however this is a circular ‘there and back’ walk so tide times are not a factor.

Setting out from the Marina the beginning of the route is through uninspiring streets of terraced homes in Hakin, although the local chip shop, aptly named ‘The Hake Inn’ smelt inviting as we passed by just before lunchtime. Once through the housing area the path drops down to a road by the Yacht Club facing Gelliswick Bay and follows this road alongside the bay.

The route follows a concrete track and then a grass path alongside the LNG terminal site. Although hedgerows screen the terminals from view, the oil and gas pipelines connecting to jetties on the waterway are a reminder that the area is heavily industrialised.

gelliswick yacht club

The path descends via a series of steps, passing underneath pipelines across a small sandy beach before ascending steps to reach a bramble sided track alongside fields at South Hook Point.

gelliswick yacht club

There’s a good view from here of another of the Victorian era maritime defences, Stack Rock Fort.

gelliswick yacht club

From South Hook Point the scenery markedly improves as the path is within the protected National Park and the contrasting landscape colours of countryside, cliffs and the rocky shoreline are a welcome sight walking towards Sandy Haven.

gelliswick yacht club

The gently undulating countryside fields along the cliff tops provide open views of craggy bays and across the waterway towards the Angle Peninsula in the distance.

gelliswick yacht club

Reaching the headland above Sandy Haven, there’s a campsite which in previous years during August probably was full with families and holiday makers . But being it’s 2020 the place is sadly deserted, still closed due to the Covid regulations. Walking around the outside of the campsite the path drops onto a cliff backed rocky beach with rock pools which are popular with young explorers. However it is eerily quiet, the silence only broken by the sounds of a solitary family at the shoreline, we wondered is this the new normal?

gelliswick yacht club

At this point we turned and via the country lanes to Herbrandston Village returned to Milford Haven marina. This circular walk distance was 8.6 miles, and the total distance now covered on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in this series to 70 miles.

It was so good to at last be back in Pembrokeshire and walking the coastline. Particularly after the uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic and the monumental changes to freedoms and lifestyles, the benefits of walking coastal paths and countryside to improve ones physical and mental health well-being cannot be overstated.

Join us again for our next walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

Thanks Cato for kind words & continued interest, it’s much appreciated.

Nice to see you both back on the Long March again. Brilliant description and photos, by the way of the curtailments the virus has made. Great photography of the man made structures on this walk – pipelines and Stack Fort. Interesting as always. Cato

Glad to see you back on the Wales Coast Path! I remember it was a very wet day when I walked that section (in the other direction). I’m revisiting the Wales Coast Path now by walking short circular walks, like you, rather than long, linear walks. I’ll look forward to reading your posts. Michelle

Thank you Michelle, good to hear you are also back on the path!

The Updated IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide, the First IWC with a Silicon Hairspring

For the first time, iwc schaffhausen relies on innovative silicon material in one of its manufacture movements..

gelliswick yacht club

This year, IWC brings the emblematic Portugieser collection under the spotlight, introducing several stunning new additions to the collection, including the impressive Eternal Calendar and updates to several iconic models, such as the chronograph and the 7-day Automatic . On the occasion of Watches and Wonders Shanghai, the brand unveils a new version of its Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide . Now available in steel with an obsidian black dial, this sportier model debuts an updated movement featuring a silicon hairspring for the first time at IWC.

Originally presented in 2020, the gold Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduced a complication that could not be more appropriate for the nautical-themed “Yacht Club” sub-collection. The original, specific functionality of the model relies on two sub-counters linked to moon phases and tide calculations.

gelliswick yacht club

The sub-dial at 6 o’clock displays the expected times for the next high and low tides. The interval between two high tides is consistently 12 hours and 24 minutes. After an initial calibration (via the crown) using tide tables for a specific location, the indicator remains highly accurate, with a deviation of only 10 minutes over 100 years.

IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide stainless steel IW344002 - first IWC silicon hairspring - review - 5

The double moon phase display at 12 o’clock, featuring IWC’s signature double moon for both hemispheres, has been enhanced to indicate spring and neap tides. This provides valuable information about the tide’s strength. Spring tides, which bring particularly high water levels, occur during the full moon and new moon phases.

gelliswick yacht club

This new iteration of the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduces a more modern, sportier aesthetic to the model. Now crafted in steel, the case is still 44.6mm in diameter but is now water-resistant to 100m. The Obsidian Black dial is subtly enhanced with red and blue accents, adding a dynamic touch to the overall design.

gelliswick yacht club

One of the key upgrades is related to the movement powering these two complications. The new calibre 82836, an evolution of the 82835, marks IWC’s first use of a silicon hairspring. Operating at 4Hz, the balance is visible through the exhibition caseback. The automatic winding mechanism employs a Pellaton system, enhanced with virtually wear-free ceramic components, and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring.

gelliswick yacht club

Although the brand hasn’t provided further details, this first model to feature a  silicon hairspring is likely not the last. While opinions on modern silicon hairsprings vary, this material offers undeniable technical advantages. This synthetic material is thermally stable, non-magnetic, lightweight, durable, and ideal for crafting hairsprings that outperform those made from traditional metal alloys. Silicon hairsprings have been around for about 20 years, initially restricted to a few brands by a patent held by CSEM as part of a collaboration between the Swatch Group, Patek Philippe, and Rolex (plus Ulysse Nardin). With the patent now expired, and despite new patents being filed, it was expected that more brands would start using silicon hairsprings. For more details, check out our article here .

The steel IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide (reference IW344002) is presented on a stainless steel bracelet with brushed H-links and polished centre links. A pair of pushers release its folding buckle and features a fine-adjustment system. The price is set at CHF 22,000 .

Good luck with an almost 45mm watch in this day and age. 41-42mm would be much nicer in my very personal opinion and much closer to the sweet spot of 40-42mm for a sports or sporty watch. 13.4mm height is very good for the complications this watch offers!

Size and price aside, this watch looks GOOD.

Rebuilding Paradise: The Bitter End Yacht Club’s Inspiring Comeback

By: Shannon Sinnard Destinations

Nestled at the northeastern tip of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, the Bitter End Yacht Club has long been a premier maritime destination for sailors. For years, this iconic resort has drawn seafarers from around the globe, offering a serene escape amidst the sparkling waters of the Caribbean.

While the term “bitter end” often refers to the final part of a rope or chain, the phrase can also signify reaching the farthest point or the end destination of a long or difficult journey. The founders of the Bitter End Yacht Club chose this name to reflect both its geographical location and the spirit of adventure and perseverance inherent to sailors. For those who navigate to this end-of-the-line point, the BEYC stands as a haven where their journey culminates in beauty and tranquility. And, for many, it has long stood as a cherished traditional stop when exploring the waters of the BVI.

A Legendary Past, a Devastating Blow

In more recent years, the Bitter End’s name has embodied not only a physical destination but also a symbolic one. The iconic BEYC experienced a devastating blow in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in history, wreaked havoc on the Caribbean, leaving the Bitter End Yacht Club in ruins. The devastation was profound, with buildings flattened, boats destroyed, and the once-thriving resort reduced to rubble.

gelliswick yacht club

While many Bitter End enthusiasts were devastated to hear of the destruction Hurricane Irma left in her wake, the iconic Bitter End Yacht Club kept its loyal fans updated via its website , detailing both the damage and community efforts to rebuild this beloved BVI institution.

Rising from the Ashes

Having now been rebuilt and risen from the devastation of Hurricane Irma, the Bitter End’s name resonates even more with the idea of enduring and overcoming challenges – much like the sailors who venture to the farthest reaches to get there.

After the storm, the Bitter End Yacht Club faced a long and arduous journey to recovery. But the spirit of resilience and determination among its community never wavered. Fast forward to today, and the Bitter End Yacht Club has not only been rebuilt but has been reimagined, standing as a testament to the power of recovery and the adventurous spirit that made it famous.

A New Era for the Bitter End Yacht Club

The reopening of the Bitter End Yacht Club marks a new chapter in its storied history. The rebuilt resort seamlessly blends the charm and character of its past with modern amenities and environmentally friendly practices. Here’s a glimpse of what visitors can now expect:

State-of-the-Art Marina

The heart of the Bitter End experience, the marina, has been meticulously restored and upgraded, offering deep-water slips that can accommodate yachts up to 200 feet, along with enhanced dockside services. Sailors can enjoy top-notch amenities including electrical hook-ups, fuel, ice, showers, rubbish disposal, and laundry facilities. Additionally, guests have access to the resort’s swimming pool. The BEYC also boasts one of the best deep-water anchorages in the Caribbean, providing many of the same amenities as the docking facilities.

gelliswick yacht club

Culinary Delights

Dining at the Bitter End is an experience in itself. The resort’s restaurants feature locally sourced ingredients, celebrating Caribbean flavors with a gourmet twist. Whether it’s a casual beachside meal or an elegant dinner under the stars, the culinary offerings are sure to delight every palate.

gelliswick yacht club

Adventure and Exploration

For those with a thirst for adventure, the resort offers a wide range of water sports, including sailing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, and snorkeling. Guests can explore the vibrant coral reefs, embark on a deep-sea fishing expedition, or simply enjoy a leisurely paddle around the bay.

gelliswick yacht club

Environmental Stewardship

The Bitter End Yacht Club has embraced sustainability as a core principle in its rebuilding efforts. The resort utilizes renewable energy sources, practices water conservation, and is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the BVI. Initiatives such as coral reef restoration and marine conservation programs are integral to its operations, ensuring that the Bitter End remains a pristine paradise for future generations.

gelliswick yacht club

A Bright Future

From its storied past to its recent resurgence, the Bitter End Yacht Club is more than just a return to business; it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and the indomitable spirit of the BVI. As it welcomes back old friends and new, the Bitter End promises to once again be the ultimate retreat for those who seek the thrill of the open sea and the tranquility of an island paradise in one of the most breathtaking locations on earth.
