Lil Yachty Launches His Label Concrete Rekordz, Backed By Quality Control And K-Pop Machine HYBE

Aaron Williams

Lil Yachty has been everywhere lately, collaborating with both major stars like Drake and J. Cole and rising stars like JID and Nemzzz . Now, he’s taking yet another step in furthering his rap dominance, announcing the launch of his new label, Concrete Rekordz. The label is named after his crew, Concrete Boys, who also comprise the roster, and is backed by the label that originally signed Yachty, Quality Control Music .

An additional wrinkle is that Quality Control is now owned by HYBE America , the stateside arm of the Korean entertainment company responsible for the success of K-pop groups like BTS, New Jeans, Seventeen, and Tomorrow X Together. In other words, there’s some serious muscle behind Concrete Rekordz, which accompanied the launch with the release of their new video for “Family Business.”

The Concrete Boys crew consists of Camo!, DC2TRILL, Draft Day, and Karrahbooo, who accompanied Yachty on his 2023 Field Trip Tour .

In a press release, Quality Control COO “Coach K” Lee said, “Yachty has always had profound vision since the day we met and to see him take his curatorial magic and expand it to discover and enhance other artists is exciting to me.” Meanwhile, his co-founder, QC CEO Pierre “P” Thomas, said, “I’m excited to see Yachty step into the role of executive alongside being one of the most formidable creatives in the world with such an eye for talent. Karrahbooo is a star and they are all going to be the new wave of cool that can bring something different to the culture that is so badly needed.”

At some point between the release of 2018’s Nuthin’ 2 Prove and now, Lil Yachty realized he’s a grown ass man. The universally appointed King of the Teens is now anadult — turning 23 in 2020 — and legacy is weighing on his mind, forcing the one-of-one Atlanta MC to reevaluate what his enormous, worldwide success really means. It may seem surprising, then, that his forthcoming album Lil Boat 3 returns to a trilogy Yachty began at the age of 18, but he views this series finale as both ending and beginning — a way to silence any lingering doubters and own his place amongst rap’s upper echelon. Of course, he’s already done that with production as minimal as it is playfully innovative, and a voice that sways between sweet and deadpan. Yachty’s career thus far has essentially tested and proven the hypothesis that rap music can be both good and fun, and Lil Boat 3 will be his clearest assertion of this philosophy to date. “I'm just trying to enjoy myself,” says Yachty, now on the other side of a couple years of soul searching. “I didn't get to where I'm at now by taking everything so seriously. I'm not trying to be nobody else.” Case in point: Lil Boat 3’s first single, “Oprah’s Bank Account,” featuring DaBaby and Drake. The bubbly cut attests to both Yachty’s renewed energy and magnetism as a creator — even Ms. Winfrey said she loves it. While the song finds Yachty praising a love interest in his own way, the video’s a feat of comedic genius. He dresses as Oprah, interviews Drake about his beard, and shares an infomercial about sliding into rappers’ DMs. In just one move, Yachty unveils a grand vision, shows his refined sound, and displays his signature wit. Produced by childhood friend Earl on the Beat — “My light, my lover, my dawg,” says Yachty — the track both expands Yachty’s established identity and recalls some of his early hits.

lil yachty qc

When the man born Miles Parks McCollum uploaded “One Night” to SoundCloud in late 2015, he was a college dropout with vague dreams of becoming a rap star. About a year later, after that song went viral, he could be seen at Madison Square Garden modeling a pair of Yeezys for Kanye West’s fashion show. Yachty’s rise has since been a super-charged ascent to the highest stratum of pop culture. He quickly joined Atlanta’s formidable Quality Control family, making him a labelmate and collaborator to Migos, while also banking outside-the-box singles with the likes of DRAM (“Broccoli”) and KYLE (“iSpy”). Two of his three albums hit Billboard’s top 10 (the third reached No. 12) and as if that wasn’t enough, Yachty parlayed his nautical theme into an esteemed spot as creative director for, where else, leisurewear mark Nautica.

During this time, though, Yachty’s entire life was in the public eye. He quite literally grew up with his fans, often the same age as his most ardent supporters. “With the life I've been living, I’ve been forced to mature a lot faster than my peers,” he says. The microscopic attention to his colorful dreads, boundary-pushing music, and unique perspective in interviews made him jaded. After a run of releases stretching into 2018, Yachty needed a break. His grandmother passed away and though he spent time in the studio, music took a backseat to the uncertainty invading his life. Working on Lil Boat 3 helped him get through it, as did the input of the hugely talented friends who contributed. “I had made the album one way,” says Yachty, “then I played it for Young Thug and he told me, ‘Hey, it drags at times.’ I really trust him and take his word for it. I went back in, switched up some styles, made it more hype. I think it’s great now.”

HYBE acquires Quality Control, label of Migos, Lil Yachty, City Girls and more

Scooter Braun's first major move since he became sole CEO of HYBE America, the US division of the South Korean entertainment company that's home to BTS, among other K-pop artists

hybe america acquire merge quality control media holdings

HYBE America, the US division of BTS -fronted South Korean entertainment company HYBE Labels , has officially acquired Quality Control (QC) Media Holdings, which is home to acts such as Migos , Lil Yachty , City Girls , Lil Baby and more.

  • READ MORE: NewJeans: “We want to show the industry that music shouldn’t be divided by language”

The agreement was reported by  Variety yesterday (February 8) PT, which detailed that HYBE America has entered into an agreement with QC Media Holdings to merge and acquire the latter. Quality Control is an Atlanta-based hip-hop label covering music as well as sports, film and television. The company was first founded by CEO Pierre “P” Thomas and COO Kevin “Coach K” Lee.

Per Variety, HYBE America’s acquisition of Quality Control was valued at $320million in stock and cash and led by HYBE America CEO Scooter Braun. Braun’s relationship with both Lee and Thomas reportedly dates back to the early 2000s when Braun was still based in the Atlanta.

Welcome to HYBE family, QC Media Holdings! HYBE will work together with QC Media Holdings to expand and diversify our footprint in the global music industry. pic.twitter.com/8ym86V2fAR — HYBE OFFICIAL (@HYBEOFFICIALtwt) February 9, 2023

The deal aligns with HYBE Labels’ missions to build a global entertainment giant rooted in music with interests in other entertainment, lifestyle and culture-rich mediums and platforms, said  Variety.  Despite the merger and acquisition, Variety  reports that Quality Control’s existing music roster will continue their affiliation with Universal Music Group.

HYBE America’s agreement with Quality Control marks Braun’s first major move as the organisation’s sole CEO since he took on the mantle earlier this year . Aside from Quality Control, the company’s US catalogue of artists include SB Projects (the New York-based company home to Justin Bieber , Ariana Grande , The Kid LAROI and more) as well as the Big Machine Label Group, which houses artists in the country genre such as Tim McGraw , Thomas Rhett, Rascal Flatts and Sheryl Crow .

“I am so proud and honoured to have Coach and P join Bang and I as our partners,” Braun told Variety in his announcement of the deal, referencing HYBE Labels chairman Bang Si-hyuk. “QC is one of the most significant independent labels in the world, working with incredible artists who are, and remain to be, the voices of culture. I’ll never forget riding around Atlanta over 20 years ago with Coach discussing our dreams and ambitions and how we said ‘If they let us in the game, we are never going to give it back.’ Now, all these years later, we are joining forces to make these dreams a reality.”

HYBE Labels – headquartered in Seoul, South Korea – is also home to an extensive roster of top K-pop acts, including BTS, ENHYPEN , TXT , SEVENTEEN , LE SSERAFIM , NewJeans and more. Aside from its American branch, HYBE Labels has also established entertainment industry presence in Japan with the launch of HYBE Japan.

Quality Control’s ‘Control the Streets, Vol. 1′ Album Showcases an Empire in the Making

When Quality Control bosses Coach K and Pee Thomas founded their label in 2013, the music moguls took a big gamble on Migos , the Atlanta trap trio that many were ready to write off as word-repeaters who would overstay their welcome. But Quavo , Offset and Takeoff have persisted, not only proving their knack for hit making over nearly half of a decade (from 2013’s “Versace" to this year’s “MotorSport”), but also becoming cultural trail blazers in their own right —just listen to half of hip-hop imitate their triplet rhyme clusters. So they were the perfect foundation around which to build a growing franchise (also featuring Lil Yachty ) that is on full display for Control the Streets, Vol. 1 , a compilation project that is too long, but is still often effective.

The album plays like a greatest hits project for the streaming age (30 tracks), but it’s nearly all original, full of hi-hats, swaggy raps and just enough deviation from the modern Atlanta trap lane. Migos is still very much QC’s flagship act—the artists appear on 22 songs in various configurations—but the compilation bolsters their talents with guest appearances by a who’s who of rap: Nicki Minaj , Gucci Mane , Young Thug , Travis Scott , Ty Dolla $ign .

While Migos are known to move as a unit, the members split off into collaborations with other artists here with enjoyable results. Takeoff and Tee Grizzley link for “We the Ones,” a track that's addictive enough to break out Takeoff on his own star journey (“Hashtag, man down!”). Offset and Cardi B ’s “Um Yea” makes a good case for hip-hop’s new favorite couple to put out a joint album. And Quavo’s solo cut “South Africa” is beautiful, featuring an unexpectedly jazzy saxophone beat from longtime Migos producer DJ Durel.

Lil Yachty, who appears on eight tracks, also makes his presence felt. His loopy bubblegum style goes down best on “Movin’ Up,” a track that somehow sounds both heartfelt and heartless: “She belongs with me/She deserve everything she wants and needs/She wants Lil Boat to get down on one knee/But I'm too young, most hated they should call Lil Boat Nick Young,” he rhymes. Yachty shows another of his chambers alongside Offset on the  Digital Nas -produced “Interlude.” It’s a dirtier sound than the big tracks on the album (“Ice Tray,” “My Dawg”), and Digital Nas’ sound is actually bigger than the message. But there’s something strange and cool about the way Yachty anti-flows: “I dropped a hundred on that all-white Maybach, they said that it’s ready/And that the inside seats is red like spaghetti.”

The newest QC act to get a big push is Lil Baby , who sounds slick and bluesy on the ballad “Sides,” auto-tune rapping about his mob ties and $2 million deal. He stands out when he interacts with the melodic aspects of “My Dawg” off of his Harder Than Hard tape—it’s probably why QC included a beefy remix to the song featuring Kodak Black , Gucci and Moneybagg Yo . It kicks a lot of ass. “I’m on my way, I’m going fast, I’m coming home to getcha,” Lil Baby rhymes.

Still, the track for which Control the Streets, Vol. 1 will be most remembered is Migos and Lil Yachty’s “Ice Tray,” which sniped at Joe Budden just as the rapper was on his way out as a personality on Complex’s daily hip-hop debate show Everyday Struggle . Of course, it stems from a heated interview with Yachty on the show back in May, which led to endless memes and a nearly violent run-in between Budden and Migos at the BET Awards one month later. While some might see the “Ice Tray” video —which features lookalike actors parodying Budden, DJ Akademiks , and journalist/intermediary Nadeska Alexis—as Migos beating a dead storyline into the ground, it’s their story and it makes sense why they’d want the last word.

The same could be said for this album: Quality Control’s emphatic statement borders on overkill but the gesture is theirs to make. The label seems to be diversifying its bonds—its all-female rap crew City Girls gets a go on the Khia -sampling “Fuck Dat Nigga”—which is refreshing. And during a time when it seems like they’re making all of the shots they take, why not go all the way in? — Andrew Matson

(AllHipHop News)  Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty has been a central figure in the rising new generation of rap stars.

Yachty’s progress in the game was covered in Fader ‘s Summer Music issue .

In the article, the 19-year-old “One Night” performer addressed being treated as the leader of the kid demographic by potential financial partners.

“Some of that sh-t is so lame. I push this ‘king of the teens’ sh-t, but they be thinking teens like 13. On some super corny, under-underage sh-t. It happens all the time,” said Yachty.

Despite some executives seemingly not understanding Yachty’s brand, he has managed to connect with Nautica, Sprite, and Target.

A conversation on  Everyday Struggle in May included the  Teenage Emotions creator declaring he was great at doing business, but Yachty also admitted being unaware if his record contract is structured as a 360 deal .

That revelation shocked many people because it gave the impression Lil Boat had no idea if his record company was making money off his non-music related work.

In his Fader cover story, the Quality Control signee talked about his relationship with QC label head/artist manager Kevin “Coach K” Lee.

“It makes things pretty one-sided sometimes. Like, technically the manager works for the artist. What the artist says goes,” stated Yachty .  “But I know Coach always has the best intentions, so sometimes he just tells me what to do. And I don’t really have any say. I mean, I have a say so, but for the most part I don’t really care to say anything.”

EXCLUSIVE : The film and TV arm of Quality Control , the record label behind artists including hip hop artists including Lil Yachty and Migos, has struck an unscripted TV partnership with Catfish and Celebrity Game Face producer Critical Content .

The deal will see the two companies develop unscripted series for these artists, as well as the likes of City Girls and Lil Baby, and athletes that the company represents.

It builds on a partnership between the two companies that saw them make YouTube original series Home Courts , where Quavo visits legendary local basketball courts around the country to meet the athletes, artists and activists who use these public spaces to effect change in their communities.

The first project to come out of the deal is Equal Justice , a social experiment that will follow the world’s most meaningful hip hop artists as they leverage their fame and personal resources to secure top attorneys, fair trials and better outcomes for indigent defendants across the USA.

Watch on Deadline

The project will be pitched to networks and streamers at the start of the year with Quality Control talent attached.

It comes after Quality Control struck a scripted co-production deal earlier this year with The Liberator producer Trioscope Studios.

Quality Control, which was founded by Kevin ‘Coach K’ Lee and Pierre ‘Pee’ Thomas, puts out records by artists including Lil Baby and City Girls and manages NFL stars such as New Orleans Saints’ Alvin Kamara and Detroit Lions’ D’Andre Swift.

The company’s TV and film division Quality Films, run by Brian Sher, produces projects including  City Girls – The Series , a five-part YouTube series about the band’s recent City on Lock album, Instagram Live series  Mastery  and are working with Mattel Films on a movie franchise based on card game Uno starring and produced by Lil Yachty.

“The alliance with Critical Content represents a unique opportunity for Quality Control and the many prominent athletes and artists under the QC umbrella of companies,” said Sher. “Critical’s world-class ability to package, present and sell premium content will enable us to expand Quality Control’s footprint with new and diverse content for our global fanbase.”

“Quality Films team, under the stewardship of Coach K, Brian, and P, has unparalleled access, relationships, acumen and taste,” added Tom Forman, CEO, Critical Content.  “We’re excited to pair Critical Content’s award-winning storytelling and production capabilities with QC’s talent roster, creative POV and proven ability to generate worldwide hits in any genre or medium.”

Coach K said, “I have been a fan of Tom’s work for many years and have recently gotten to know him on a personal level. He clearly understands the culture and knows how to develop the kinds of unscripted projects that Quality Films want to be a part of.”
