The shipyard that built the ‘titanic’ has filed for bankruptcy.

We had a chance to step aboard earlier this month as the Magellano flagship made its entrée into the North American market at the Miami International Boat Show.

Azimut's Magellano 30M Superyacht forward lounge.

As much as I loved the exterior, it was the interior that really got my attention. For that, Azimut brought in artist, architect, and now yacht designer Vincenzo de Cotiis. The Milan-based creative is best known for his terranean projects that mix modern design elements with a historical flair. On the 30M, he did not need to reach that far back into the past to find inspiration.

The interior has a 1980s vibe imbued by pastel colors throughout and irregular shaped, mirrored surfaces. But this bit of nostalgia is mixed with the inside-out aesthetic that is so prevalent in yachting right now, with near sole-to-ceiling windows in the salon and very low furniture that serves to amplify the open-concept layout. Glass defines the interior, with 750 square feet used across the vessel.

Another touch that I can’t remember seeing on a yacht before was the use of what de Cotiis and Azimut are calling “artistic fiberglass.” The aquamarine material can be seen throughout the interior, mostly on countertops and somehow makes strands of raw fiberglass look pretty. It’s a nod to the Brutalist aesthetic that has become so hot among a certain home buyer in recent years.

Azimut's Magellano 30M Superyacht interior salon.

Some of the 30M’s best attributes are found below the waterline. The vessel has a Dual Mode hull, which makes it efficient both in displacement and semi-planing modes, delivering 15 to 20 percent reduced fuel consumption compared to traditional hard-chine planing hulls. The 100kWh lithium batteries also let the boat stay at anchor for four hours without running the engine and eight hours at night. The result is no noise and zero emissions.

Azimut's Magellano 30M Superyacht master suite.

Back outside, the 30M has a lovely bow-deck lounge with the expected lounge seating and carbon-fiber poles for the sunshade, as well as a roomy work area for the crew up front, with stainless-steel everything.

But the marquee outdoor deck is the flybridge. That space handles all dining duties with a table for 11—another nod to the outside-in concept and the new ways in which owners use their yachts. A bar for three to port exhibits high levels of fit and finish with its stainless inlays, though I would trade out the bare teak seats for something more comfortable and perhaps more stable.

A grill at the aft end of the deck also signals Azimut’s intent to make its new flagship popular in the U.S. market. With such delightful design bona fides, there’s no reason why it won’t thrive here.

Azimut’s most majestic Magellano

  • December 1, 2023

Set to arrive in Asia in 2024, the 30M flagship of Azimut’s semi-displacement Magellano series takes Ken Freivokh’s exterior design to new lengths and Vincenzo De Cotiis’ artistic, light-filled interiors to a new level. Words: Clare Mahon; Photos: Azimut

The Magellano 30M is among Azimut’s Low Emission Yachts

Azimut launched its first Magellano in 2009, but the semi-displacement, navetta-style series has enjoyed a big boost in recent years. After the Magellano 66 enjoyed an upgrade last year, the Magellano 60 ( Review, Issue 73 ) was introduced this year and became the line’s new entry model.

At the bigger end of the scale, the Magellano 25M launched at the end of 2020 was designed by Ken Freivokh and Vincenzo De Cotiis – making his yacht debut in his 60s – and it was followed by the series-flagship Magellano 30M, which reunited the designers and debuted last year.

With growing interest in the line from within Asia, the region’s first Magellano 30M was sold by regional dealer Marine Italia and is expected to be handed over in Italy in spring 2024, potentially arriving in Hong Kong over the summer.

Ken Freivokh designed the Magellano 30M’s exterior

The Magellano 30M is proving a many faceted, versatile crossover cruiser, the largest embodiment to date of an increasingly popular series that reflects Azimut owner Paolo Vitelli’s timeless vision and Freivokh’s execution, while being elevated internally by De Cotiis.

Federico Lantero, Azimut-Benetti Group’s Product Marketing and Communication Director, said: “The Magellano series kicked off with the 74’ designed by Ken Freivokh. That was our first modern navetta and even though it isn’t in production anymore, its clean and strongly horizontal exterior lines are still contemporary.

“We gave Ken Freivokh a clean slate to do what he wanted with the 30M, and he came back with a design that masks large interior volumes behind elegant lines. But when you’re on a yacht you don’t want to feel ‘at home’, you want something more, something magical, so we felt Vincenzo De Cotiis would know how to create atmosphere and give the Magellano 30M personality.”

In fact, the exterior of the Magellano 30M has the timeless look of a trawler with a high freeboard, straight bow and low superstructure, but features almost 70sqm of glazed surfaces to bring the luxury of natural light inside.

Pierluigi Ausonio’s Studio P.L.A.N.A. and Azimut’s own R&D Department designed the Dual Mode hull, whose double chines and skeg allow it to navigate smoothly even in rougher conditions with up to 20 per cent reduced emissions.

At cruising speed, the hull runs solidly in the water on its broad upper chine, but transitions to plane at about 16 knots, skimming along on its lower chine and deflecting the water. In either mode, the Magellano has a solidly comfortable ride with the standard option of twin 1,550hp MAN engines that provide a top speed of up to 20 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.

A hydraulic swim platform is a highlight of the beach club, while fashion plates flank the cockpit

“We’ve been collaborating with Studio P.L.A.N.A. for years now, researching new hull shapes as part of our Green Efficiency Program,” Lantero says. “The Magellano 30M is part of our Low Emission Yacht series, and we’re proud of the results we have achieved.”

PUTTING VIEWS FIRST

While the technology is strong, the interiors are so beautiful that they almost make you forget that you’re aboard a piece of complex machinery. The aft cockpit sets the tone for the rest of the yacht, where views to the water are given top priority. Curved couches face a low bench aft and a glass bulwark leaves views to the water free and clear.

The infinity terrace offers clear views through the furniture and parapet

The transom can open fully horizontal to become a beach platform or slant down to the water for launching the tender or toys.

“We thought of this as the infinity terrace version of the infinity pool,” Lantero says pointing out the unobstructed views.

The Magellano 30M’s crowning glory is the upper deck, accessible both from the main deck aft and from the lobby. With a sky lounge that opens onto a shaded dining area, it also has a bar and sun pads. The foredeck is an ideal spot for sunbathing and offers a spa pool option.

Boatyards frequently gush about their yachts as works of art, but in the case of the Magellano 30M, it might not be hyperbole. Freivokh’s layout gave De Cotiis an open, uninterrupted space to work with on the main deck and – as he did aboard the Magellano 25M, his first yacht design – he shows that he knows how to make the best of airy space set in a vast natural environment.

Entering the main saloon, the immediate sensation is of air and light. Large windows let you look through the yacht to the outdoors and structural elements are masked with mirror and other reflective materials so that they seem to disintegrate into the diffused light.

Vincenzo De Cotiis designed the interior, which includes marble, brushed brass, cream-coloured carpeting and bleached wood

No element of the yacht’s decor is predictable because De Cotiis custom-designed all the furniture in faceted shapes that encourage movement through the yacht and don’t encumber the space. Even the lighting fixtures are designed by De Cotiis to keep the level of the look consistently high.

ORGANIC CREATIONS

De Cotiis’ work has always pushed the boundaries between architecture, design and art and he comes at all aspects of the interiors from new angles, creating sculpted and fluid spaces furnished with organically shaped pieces.

Lantero says: “At our Fano shipyard, he became fascinated by fibreglass, picking up old, damaged fibreglass and working with it to bring out imperfections and give it new tonalities. Many of the surfaces in the main saloon, like the bases of the tables and some wall panels, are the result of months of work with fibreglass to achieve the effects that De Cotiis wanted.

Azimut, Magellano, Ken Freivokh, Vincenzo De Cotiis, Marine Italia, Federico Lantero, Azimut-Benetti Group, Pierluigi Ausonio, Studio, P.L.A.N.A., Low Emission Yacht

De Cotiis developed an artisanal method for layering fibreglass

“It was a kind of philosophical research for him. The yacht is made of fibreglass but often the material is covered up. He wanted to give the base material new nobility, to bring it out. Three different layers of resin were used and between the second and the third layers we applied a dusting of metallic particles. In the end you can’t really tell what material you’re looking at because when it’s worked manually fibreglass is hard to classify, lovely to look at and versatile.”

While De Cotiis explored the decorative potential of fibreglass, a material usually considered to be so bland that it’s hidden and used primarily for its structural resistance, it’s almost ironic that Azimut used carbon-fibre to build the 30M’s superstructure and hardtop, concealing a material that’s often used decoratively.

The vast saloon leads to the dining area

De Cotiis loves patina, so even painted surfaces are left with a hint of the underlying wood showing through for depth and a sense of history. Much as his treatment of surfaces and furnishings is unexpected, it never jars because of a tranquil and unified colour palette and recurring, high-quality materials used throughout the yacht.

The full-beam master cabin is fore on the main deck and has large hull windows that bring an otherworldly sensation of being immersed in nature to the forefront. The centrally placed bed floats on a cloud of carpeting and the closet doors are so well integrated they’re practically hidden. The bathroom layout sees twin sinks flanked by separate cubicles for the shower and WC.

De Cotiis uses faceted, organic shapes for furniture, as shown in the master suite

Even the ceiling treatment – where irregularly shaped polygonal panels are set off with rays of burnished brass – is unexpected, interesting and elegant.

Four more guest cabins are on the lower deck and comprise two VIPs and twin cabins with beds that can convert to become doubles. All cabins have en-suite bathrooms and are finished with the same colours and materials used throughout the yacht. Crew accommodation is also on the lower deck and includes three cabins.

Health-conscious owners or those who want to charter the Magellano 30M can install Azimut-Benetti’s BCool sanitising system for renewing, refreshing and recirculating air inside the yacht.

Lithium batteries can also be added so the yacht can run in Azimut’s Zero-Emission Hotel Mode with lighting, entertainment, AC units and the Humphree fin stabilizers powered for four hours by day and eight hours by night even when the generators are off.

Azimut has created a multi-faceted gem of a yacht in the Magellano 30M, one whose truly sophisticated interiors are backed by the kind of technology that will make it both efficient and pleasurable to use.

Azimut Magellano 30M: Luxurious Light-Filled Cruiser

' src=

The flagship of Azimut’s Magellano fleet, the sophisticated new 30M is designed as a comfortable and luxurious long-range cruiser.

The Magellano line was started back in 2007 by Azimut founder Paolo Vitelli, who wanted a boat that had the range of a traditional displacement trawler but with more speed and, of course, some Italian design flair. The line now includes the 60-foot-long Magellano 60 and the 82-foot long Magellano 25M.

The new 30M has what the company calls a second generation Dual Mode hull that provides an easy ride at both displacement and planing speeds. It tops out at 20 knots with the standard twin 1,550-hp MAN diesels, and 24 knots with optional 1,900-hp MANs.

The hull and exterior was designed by Ken Freivokh and the interior by Vincenzo De Cotiis. The new Magellano has striking high bulwarks, a sleek superstructure, a vertical bow, and lots of glazed surfaces. Indeed, the yacht has more than 750 square feet of glass.

Azimut says you can sit almost anywhere on the yacht and still have views outside. Furnishings in the salon are built at half height, so they don’t obstruct the views; Azimut’s engineers created a low-profile ventilation system for the same reason. Looking aft the from salon, the Magellano has an “infinity terrace” with a glass parapet so the views can go on forever.

reichweite 30m yacht

The foredeck is sleek and massive and built for relaxing and entertaining. The single helm station is on the upper deck, so the salon on the main deck is open and flooded with light. The full-beam owner’s suite is forward on the main deck. You enter it via a private lobby with marble-framed portholes. It has a vanity/deck, and a smoked-glass door to the luxurious en suite head.

Two VIP suites and two guest cabins are on the lower accommodations deck. Crew quarters are forward, and connect directly to the galley.

A stairway leads from the main deck up to the interior sky lounge. The wheelhouse is forward, and doors aft lead to a terrace with a dining area, bar and sun lounges.

Filippetti Navetta 30: sailing in total harmony with sea

The trawler: the ideal option for all those who love and respect the sea.

Filippetti Navetta 30 is designed to enjoy a responsible sailing experience in harmony with the sea.

Built with eco-sustainable materials, this 30-meter yacht is a perfect long-range cruiser with very low environmental impact, displacing hull, low emissions and exceptional water and fuel capacity.

THE OWNER FIRST

The main focus of the Filippetti Navetta 30 project is on the owner. Spaces are arranged and customised around the owner’s needs for a totally relaxing sailing experience. However, this long-range cruiser is not only designed for comfort: aesthetics is important, too. Two different layouts and a custom interior configuration make this yacht unique and inimitable. The owner can choose between two versions, with 5 or 6 cabins. The latter even includes an upper deck that is exclusively reserved for the owner. In both versions, the master cabin enjoys a breath-breaking panoramic view.

A VERY BRIGHT LONG-RANGE CRUISER

Light is one among the main features of the Filippetti Navetta 30 . In the bow, where the large owner area is accommodated, the enveloping windows flood the interiors with an incredible amount of natural light, offering an ample panoramic view.

A WELLNESS OASIS ON BOARD

Travelling on board the Filippetti Navetta 30 is synonymous with relax and quiet. The Owner Suite can house a SPA area with jacuzzi, steam bath and an extraordinarily large shower or  a private Gym. The bathroom is decorated with fine marble details and customizable according to the owner’s needs. Guests can relax on the large terrace on the upper deck: the ideal place to enjoy the sun and the distant view between sea and sky.

Azimut_Grande 30M_Profile

Innovation, design, emotion.

Azimut unveils the Grande 30M and Seadeck 9, promising an emotion never felt before with each new model. The involved designers play an important role in this achievement: m²atelier, in their first collaboration with the Shipyard, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez and Alberto Mancini.

During the press conference held at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023, Azimut reaffirmed the foundation of its design philosophy:  build experiences that evoke extraordinary emotions . The mission has grown from its roots in the Shipyard’s DNA and in the vision of Paolo Vitelli, strengthened by an ambitious promise: to introduce, with each new model, an innovation that allows you to experience the yacht or an environment like never before, discovering unexpected passions and sensations. Azimut’s Head of Product Design  Federico Lantero  revealed the brand’s new projects,  Grande 30M and   Seadeck 9 .

Azimut_Grande 30M_Main Deck_m2atelier

The  Grande 30M , which will be presented to the public in 2025, represents the culmination of stylistic innovations to break down the barriers that limit contact with sea and sky. The interiors are designed by  m²atelier , for their first collaboration with Azimut , while the  exteriors by Alberto Mancini  take the two elements that established the success of Grande 26M and Grande 36M to their fullest expression by integrating them: the  Deck2Deck™ Terrace  and the  Infinity Skydeck .

The Grande 30M’s  Infinity Skydeck  is the natural evolution of the one the Shipyard made for the Grande 36M and for the first time goes from ‘semi’ to  fully walkaround .  The Upper Deck  of the yacht  runs flush from the stern to the extreme bow , allowing guests to experience this space like never before and pushing the concept of fluidity between exteriors and interiors to the extreme. The  Glass House  of the Upper Deck is transformed – thanks to the  fully disappearing full-height windows  – into a veranda open on three sides, establishing a union between the large aft lounge and the  Infinity Pool  which overlooks the sea off the bow.

The feature that best embodies the desire to expand the spaces on board and look to the horizon as a profound vocation of cruising is the  Deck2Deck™ Terrace , an extension of the transom obtained by raising the teak hatch of the garage to become a continuation of the cockpit and a real  terrace over the sea .

The signature of  m²atelier , an international architecture and design studio founded in Milan by  Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic , is evident in the  architectural language that draws from different fields, from residential to contemporary art , to create fluid and informal spaces, to be lived and used in great relaxation and freedom, where time passes slowly and where the perception of light is the heart of the experience.

Light is the protagonist throughout the spaces on board  the Grande 30M:  from the large, floor-to-ceiling windows to the internal staircase , made ethereally light to give this structural element an artistic interpretation and create a cascade of light that descends from the Upper Deck to the Main Deck. This architectural concept embraces attention to detail and the ability to combine different materials in a relentless pursuit of a  sustainable minimalism  that is attentive to people’s wellbeing and respect for the environment.

Grande 30M is one of Azimut’s Low Emission Yachts , which include more than half of the brand’s models. Low Emission Yachts  guarantee a reduction in consumption – and therefore in CO2 emissions – of 20 to 30%  compared to models of similar size with hard-chine hulls and traditional shaft line. These results are possible through the combination of three key factors: weight reduction through the extensive use of carbon fiber; the development of increasingly efficient hulls, designed ad hoc to suit the mission of each Series; the use of innovative propulsion, such as the  POD system installed on board the Grande 30M .

Azimut_Seadeck 9_Profile (1)

Federico Lantero  also unveiled to the Cannes audience the  Seadeck 9  project, the future flagship of the Seadeck Series, which is the first Series of hybrid family motor yachts, representing the most efficient models ever built by Azimut – soon to be the ambassador of the Shipyard’s Low Emission Yacht fleet.

The Series, which will make its debut in 2024 with the Seadeck 6, inaugurates a new  gentle era , marking a milestone in Azimut’s path towards a  more conscious approach to the topic of environmental sustainability . Seadeck signals a return to nature through technological solutions that potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% in an average year of use, both while sailing and at anchor, perfectly paired with the  Fun Island , a reinvented aft deck that “embraces” the sea and a new lifestyle based on  wellbeing .

The Seadeck 9 – with exteriors by  Alberto Mancini  and interiors by  Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez  – represents the epitome of the Series’ concept and elaborates its innovations. The Fun Island is transformed into a  cascade of terraces with a surface area of 60m² on 3 levels , a  pool  integrated into the deck and flanked by two sunbeds which can slide to cover it, and an  additional large platform at water level . The combined space is an unparalleled design masterpiece, whose elements transcend their individual functions to evoke, as a whole, the aspiration for a world of sharing, nature and freedom.
