One of the most striking features of the 3600 Sport Yacht is the large rear awning window and door between the cockpit and saloon. Not only is it extremely stylish with tinted glass set in a bold, highly polished stainless steel frame, it opens up to create the ultimate indoor-outdoor feeling. The two areas seamlessly flow into one to produce a unique alfresco experience.

The fact that the gourmet galley is on the same level as the cockpit and salon also means that the chef remains in the middle of the party. The galley is just a step away from the cockpit and for entertaining there is a second refrigerator here.

At every turn you will find Riviera ingenuity – such as the flat screen television in the saloon that raises and lowers out of sight at the touch of a button, the way the stainless steel swim ladder folds away, and the discreetly placed drink holders on the foredeck sunpad. As for comfort, the large L-shaped lounge with its soft leather and deep cushions is probably more inviting than the lounge in your living room.

The 3600 Sport Yacht epitomises, easy living and an idyllic environment to share leisure time with your family and friends. But this is a yacht of real substance too, one that boasts the most sophisticated design and construction methods including a hand-laid solid fibreglass hull with separate compartments throughout the hull and a watertight collision bulkhead forward.

The Riviera 36 Convertible’s classic styling, rugged construction, solid ride and fishibility made her a strong contender in the midsize convertible market of her day. Hull construction is solid fiberglass, and like all Riviera convertibles she was designed with a forward collision bulkhead and watertight compartments for an extra margin of safety. With recent rebuilds on both motors, updated electronics, refit interior and full tower, this is one boat that should not be missed.

To Port and down a step, is a well equipped galley with a new Nova-Kool refrigerator, 2-burner Princess cooktop, and a convection microwave.

All the way forward is the master stateroom with queen size berth and ample storage. Just aft and to starboard is a full head with Vacu-Flush toilet and a separate stall shower.

1998 - RIVIERA 36 SINGLE CABIN

Riviera built on the success of the original 36 Open Flybridge – launched in 1992 – with the development six years later of a single-cabin version. Like the 34 Open Flybridge, she was designed as a couples’ boat, providing a large cabin forward with queen double bed and plenty of storage including hanging lockers.

The additional space available from just one cabin also meant a large bathroom with enclosed shower stall, a vanity and Vacuflush toilet.

The galley, too, was spacious, with a two-burner cooktop as the centrepiece with a microwave oven under, a moulded sink with mixer tap forward and angled to provide extra space for the chef, an under-bench fridge aft.

The saloon area offered a U-shape dinette and lounge as well as a second lounge opposite, both of which could be converted to additional sleeping accommodation.

BlueWater magazine described the interior as “quite spectacular; light and bright, airy and contemporary, not at all dissimilar to a modern apartment”.

Reflecting her true “convertible” status, the 36 Single Cabin was promoted as much for her sport fishing capabilities as her cruising credentials.

Standard power for the 36 Single Cabin came from a pair of Cummins diesel engines rated at 315 hp with an option to upgrade to 370 hp each.

This remained a popular model with a six-year production life. Riviera built a total of 108, 36 single cabin 36’s.

Postcards from Gulag

Photographs from the remnants of the gulag archipelago, watchtower, perm-36, perm krai.

Perm-36 is allegedly the only Gulag camp that has been turned into a museum. While this is not strictly true (there are other former camps that have been partly preserved) and Perm-36 is heavily reconstructed, the museum has conserved an important part of the Soviet camp system, especially from its latter era after the death of Stalin. Perm-36 camp operated from the 1940s until the last days of the Soviet Union, and it was meant mainly for the political prisoners and dissidents. Among the dense forests of Russia near the Ural mountains stands a solitary watchtower of the former camp. Behind it, inside the zona , one finds relics of the barracks, but somehow the tower itself, a symbol as poignant as barbed wire, communicates the utter isolation of Gulag victims.
