Botin 65, ARTEMIS
Knierim Yachtbau, Botin 65 Built 2013 / US$1,250,000, US Duty paid
Broker’s Comments
ARTEMIS was constructed in Germany in 2013 by Knierim Yachtbau to the highest quality in Pre Preg Carbon with a Foam core, based on a design by Botin and Partners. She was initially conceived to travel the world with fast passage times and to compete in the world’s most prestigious yacht races, a goal she has achieved admirably. Another important aspect of the brief was her capability to be effectively sailed for both cruising and racing, inshore and offshore, by a small crew.
She features twin rudder steering, exceptional for reaching, with an adjustable toe-in angle to reduce drag when necessary.
The deck is pleasantly laid with teak, showing below-average wear for her age, and the silver caulking gives her a modern twist against the recently painted topsides.
Her deck layout reflects the design brief, with controls easily accessible and simple to operate shorthanded. Push-button winches alleviate the need for a large crew.
Below deck, the environment is reasonably spartan compared to cruising yachts but much more comfortable than your average racing yacht. The small galley and chart table, tastefully finished in Cocobola veneer, contrast well with the clear-coat carbon finish of the worktop and the painted texture of the rest of the yacht. All are beautifully finished, as expected, with the keelbox also featuring a clear-coat carbon finish in the center of the saloon, alongside a comfortable seating area, all with recently refurbished covers.
On the racecourse, her sister ship SPIRIT OF LORINA won her division in both the Rolex Maxi World Cup in Porto Cervo and shortly afterward in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, proving the design’s competitiveness both inshore and offshore.
ARTEMIS is in turnkey condition for the next owner following a comprehensive refit and service in 2020. Maintenance has been meticulously attended to, with EC6 rigging completely stripped and sent back to Future Fibres for testing and recovery. Spars underwent NDT testing and repainting concurrently, and all hydraulics were serviced by Cariboni.
Additionally, she has a separate configuration with the inclusion of cruising kit, lightly used and stored in a container for potential cruising purposes.

Rare Summers & Payne yawl in need of help
Though resurrected just three years ago following an extensive period of rebuild and restoration, the elegant and rare 95ft Summers & Payne gaff yawl, Artemis , has swiftly fallen upon hard times once again. The project’s surveyor, Jendrik Odenwald , explains what has happened…
Artemis was born in 1900 at the renowned yacht builders, Summers & Payne of Southampton, UK. It was a time when large, gentleman’s yachts such as GL Watson’s Thistle and Britannia were majestically locking horns with each other to the delight of the yachting world. These yachts, with large overhanging sterns, long bowsprits and powerful rigs were designed to be fought doggedly against each other by highly trained crews, and, as an integral part of this heritage, Artemis is a piece of yachting history.
During the Second World War she sacrificed her lead keel to aid the British war effort and having survived those difficult times she ended up as a houseboat, lying at West Mersea in Essex. The liveaboard owner at this time was a lady in later years, who did her best to take care of her upkeep, and she treasured her so much that every Sunday this lady would raise the original Artemis flag to signal time for tea.
In 1994, the current owner, the head of a German-based trust that preserves and restores historic vessels, found Artemis in need of much repair lying in the mud that she had occupied for many years. It’s likely that sitting supported in this way had prevented her deteriorating as much as she might, as she could not completely sink and the tide that entered her bilges rose only to just below the floorboards.
Some parts of the boat were still original, others had been changed over the years and some items, such as the rig and the steering wheel, were completely missing. As part of his research the current owner heard a story stating that the original steering wheel had been taken some years earlier to be fitted to a Thames barge. Eventually, the skipper of that Thames barge was located and diplomatic discussion then commenced around ownership of the wheel. Despite careful negotiations, in the end the barge skipper made his position clear by saying, “Giving you the wheel is like cutting off my left hand”. So pictures and measurements were taken in order to build an accurate replica.
After taking all that remained of Artemis to Germany, the owners’ trust began preparations by surveying the vessel so that the true extent of the work required could be understood. The refit was to be financed by a group of interested parties, while the work was overseen by professional yacht and ship-builders as well as various classification societies. The work would be carried out by a social organization whose aim was training youths in the art of boat building under an apprenticeship scheme.
With the completed survey in hand it was clear that there was a substantial amount of radical work to be done. Below the waterline the refit resembled a new-build – new fastenings, frames and planks – which, due to the nature of the project’s operation took almost ten years to complete. When the hull planking was finished it was sheathed in copper, as it had been in Artemis ’ early years, and the empty boat was put back into the water prior to the internal fit-out. This kept the boat lying in the waters of a dock in the southern part of Hamburg for some five years more.
In 2010 the work was eventually completed, and Artemis sailed once again to rejoicing and with much pride from all participants and sponsors, but, alas, this story does not yet conclude with a happy ending…
Just three months after her launch, two crew members were cleaning outside the hull, when they discovered some soft areas in the planking at the transom. Immediately the boat was inspected and more rotten wood was discovered. Artemis went straight back into the shipyard where the results of a survey found that parts of the frames and planks had become infected by fungus. Removing instantly the infected planks, the trust conceived a plan to repair the affected areas, but frustration among the sponsors arose and some refused to financially support these repairs. Others soon followed in withdrawing support until finally all means were exhausted and the heavy-hearted decision was taken to sell her.
A professional investigation by a wood expert threw light onto this sad story.
When the boat was rebuilt it was done using exactly the original size of hull planks and, as is normal, once the hull was launched, it let in water until the planks had swelled. Damage to planking by fungus is quite well documented with boats lying in freshwater lakes and rivers, especially during summer when the fungus grows as humidity and temperature rise; the dock in which Artemis was lying while the fit-out was completed was not seawater and was also heated during winter. The heat, the humidity and the foul water were the right environment for the fungus to grow.
Today, Artemis sits in a large cradle on a pier in Hamburg, covered with a professional tent and all systems are kept supplied with power. The hull planks are removed and covered with plastic in order to allow air to flow through the entire boat and to dry her out. Most parts of the infected wood are already removed and the areas around treated against possible infection.
Artemis needs a new owner: a classic enthusiast who wants to help another beautiful classic yacht to survive. As the interior is totally intact and the systems in working order, the whole project is well containable and all the defects are now clearly understood. One should count on replacing around 12 frames and the hull needs to be re-planked, at least below the waterline.
The rest of this wonderful lady is impeccable: all restored, all finished, all new! Most of the equipment such as rig, deck fittings and interior has been used for just three months. There is no need for re-building any parts on the deck and the layout is to the original plan.
All in all she is a strong, powerful and historically important yacht that is not far from being ready to supply guests and crew with exhilarating sailing and absolute luxury.
Once sailing again she is capable of comfortably undertaking long voyages as well as winning races. I personally believe that for the right person or company, it would be an easy task to get Artemis beautifully restored and sailing once again – it is no more than she deserves. Please help.

Robust and original
The three-masted Artemis is an astonishing example of nautical tradition. The ship was built in Norway in 1926 for whale fishing. Later on it was used as a cargo ship between Asia and South America.
The Artemis is sailing since 2001 on the North European waters to honour the glory of the Dutch sailing fleet! The Frisian Tall Ship Company bought the Artemis at the end of the last century and built it with a lot of love and a sense of detail back into a stunningly sailing ship. Now she crosses the seas to historic port cities or to one of the many nautical events.
Robust and original, that is the appearance of the Artemis. At the same time, the ship offers high comfort and luxury. It is precisely this combination that makes the ship unique and loved by international events and sea voyages. The barque has an attractive maritime salon with bar and a small hotel kitchen.
The Artemis can accommodate up to 120 people. Her guests can look forward to experienced and enthusiastic service staff and excellent catering. And of course, on a great nautical experience aboard on this unique three-master with a driven sailing crew, the most modern navigation equipment and fully prescribed safety equipment for the big voyage.

The luxury sailing yacht MES AMIS (ex ARTEMIS, SALPERTON III) is a 44m Dubois design, with interior design by Adam Lay Studios. This beautiful yacht was conceived by a very experienced yachtsman, built in New Zealand by Fitzroy Yachts and launched in 2007. She was the winner of the ShowBoats International award at Monaco in 2007. Refitted in 2022.
Combining the innovative design work of Dubois Naval Architects with the workmanship of Fitzroy Yachts, MES AMIS is a performance-orientated luxury yacht. S/Y MES AMIS is currently one of the very finest recent sailing yachts worldwide in her size range.
A beautifully appointed interior is the design work of Adam Lay Studios and includes a full-width owner's suite, three generous guest cabins and three crew cabins. Yacht MES AMIS's luxury interior makes lovely use of Oak and Walnut with Wenge and could be described as “warm, calm contemporary”. Her style of wooden joinery is simple, clean and crisp with a tactile countertop nosing incorporating a practical up-stand and a walnut bead for emphasis. The Walnut cornice gives a crisp emphasis between bulkhead and deckhead. Oak floor perimeters, in wide boards combined with natural cotton carpet in an off-white colour, reflect the light bulkheads and deck heads. Natural fibres maintain the feeling of calm. Leather, bronze, granite, onyx and slumped glass continue the ‘natural’ theme throughout the superyacht.
The yacht’s unique transom opens hydraulically to form either a swim platform or a boarding platform 800mm above water level. The transom can be lowered to 300mm in calm water. Twelve underwater lights have been fitted into the hull.
Another unique design feature is the layout on one level from the cockpit through the saloon and then down a few steps to the dining area, thus creating an expansive area for entertaining. Within the MES AMIS upper saloon, and adjacent to the bar, is the inside steering and navigation station with autopilot and engine controls.
The yacht’s five spreaders Martin Spars 60m main mast and Leisure furl booms are constructed from carbon fibre. Her mainsail and mizzen are fully battened with the Leisure furl in-boom furling and reefing systems. Her hull, deck and superstructure are welded aluminium construction and her fin bulb keel is an elliptical section and is filled with 60 tonnes of lead. There are 5 watertight bulkheads.
She provides duel steering positions with custom-built carbon fibre wheels with sunpads to aft. In the centre of the cockpit is a console carrying the sailing controls and instruments and navigation systems. Forward to the steering position is a dining area and a large sunpad area.
The yacht’s guest accommodation is extremely spacious with a full-width owners’ stateroom with a king-sized bed and en-suite bathroom. She offers wardrobes with ample clothes storage, a separate seating area and state of the art entertainment systems. Guest cabins include VIP double cabins, a twin-bedded cabin both with en-suite bathrooms. A further twin cabin is currently used as a gymnasium, has 2 Pullman berths and a fixed berth, also with en-suite facilities.

"I loved the look of boats from age, well, nothing. It was the look of boats was as interesting to me as the hydrodynamics, both were equally compelling. Hanse 418 Artemis
We have made some prestigious additions to our fleet for 2020 and our brand new ‘range-topper’ is the Hanse 418, Artemis. She’s the latest bang-up-to-date 40 footer from the esteemed Hanse stable, a company renowned for its quality German engineering.
She sports a superb deck arrangement with easily managed sails, a self-tacking jib and no less than 19 windows that light up her thoroughly modern, upgraded cedar wood interior. Everything about her is much better-than-your-average cruiser and we’ve added lots of special extras during her build to make her into that perfect Med-boat: Things like her Fast Cruising Dacron sails from Elvstrøm, her carbo-composite steering wheels and bow thruster to help with close quarters manoeuvring.
She’s a great performer, very seaworthy, and, like her little sister (the Hanse 388) once the sails are set - you just need to guide her finger-light helm and enjoy the ride. She’s a blast to sail for helm and crew, and easy for a shorthanded couple or a family to enjoy the ‘Med.

More images of this yacht
She’s got a great interior which we’ve upgraded during her build, with lots of light so it makes living aboard a joy. Like her smaller sister, (the Hanse 388) , Artemis is a very capable offshore yacht that makes sailing easy: Her finger light helm is made even better with our carbon-composite steering wheel upgrade, and, should you relinquish the helm - which you may find hard to do, such are her sailing qualities - then relax in her roomy cockpit and tweak her controls, for she’s a blast to sail!
Her deck, cockpit and interior space are more fitting of a 44 footer, but so cleverly designed into an easily managed 41 foot hull with self tacking jib; so allowing couples and families to sail her with ease.

Dream Makers & Yacht Brokers Since 1984.
Joe Zammataro, CPYB
Owner & certified professional yacht broker (cpyb).
For over 40 years, Joe has helped many of his clients realize their boating dreams. He’d like to help you too. With extensive experience as a sailor, boat builder, yacht broker, businessman and a proven negotiator, Joe will provide you with sound advice and representation. You will find his practical experience and broad product knowledge insightful in comparing and evaluating yachts you are considering. If your goal is to sell your boat, his sales and marketing experience will help you to sell your boat quickly, for the most dollars possible and have the process be hassle free.
As one of a only 125 of the 4000 licensed brokers in Florida to qualify as a Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB), you will be assured of honest and accurate representation and that your interests are always protected. Joe has worked diligently to help hundreds of his clients buy or sell either power or sailing yachts. Many of my clients have become lifelong friends. he’d like the opportunity to earn that relationship with you.
The Early Years:
Joe’s love of the sea motivated me to earning a degree in marine biology and chemistry. Unable to find a career in his field and after numerous course in sales and marketing, he began his career in the yacht business in 1978 working with CSY, Caribbean Sailing Yachts in Tampa, Florida in the sales department.
Over the years, Joe was vice president of sales and marketing for several yacht manufactures which included Gulfstar yachts, Lazzara Marine, Morgan Yachts and Irwin Yachts. During that time he had the incredible opportunity to work side by side with several of the “legends” in the boat building industry.
Joe also had the pleasure of working with Azimut Benetti, the Italian manufacture that is the largest builder of motor yachts over eighty feet in the world. Through these experiences, Joe gained intimate product knowledge and a thorough understanding of the construction process that you may find helpful in comparing different yachts.
The Middle Years:
Joe’s experience in yacht brokerage sales is extensive and varied and includes selling hundreds of sail and power yachts. He also owned the first completely computerized yacht brokerage, Preferred Yachts. Located next door to the St Pete Yacht Club and the 600+ slip Municipal Marina, we were a waterfront fixture for over a decade.
Always searching for a better way do something, Joe developed a computer program in the 80’s that effectively kept track of brokerage yachts around the country and interfaced that information with a database of clients’ wants and needs. This computer system helped him to become one of the largest brokerages on the west coast of Florida and was further developed and shared with BUC International. The BUC listing system became the industry standard for over 15 years before Yachtworld took their place.
My Pledge to you:
My pledge to you is to advise you and never “sell” you. Although I’ve sold boats for 46 years, I never want to forget what it’s like to be a buyer or a seller. Buying or selling a boat can be a confusing and frustrating experience. What’s a good boat and what isn’t? What’s good price and what isn’t? With so many questions and so much miss-information, how do you make the right choice and who can you trust?
You will find my practical advice is sincere, sound and honest. My hope is to earn your trust, respect and business. My goal is to fulfill your dream whether it is to find the right boat or sell your current one.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. Now, I'd like to learn about you.
I invite you to contact me, better yet, come visit me at our floating office that we designed and built and also explore our Brokerage Display Center. Here he have a large selection of power and sailing yachts for you to consider. We are located in the beautiful Harborage Marine in charming downtown St Petersburg, Florida. Let's get to know each other better.

The concept behind Vizual Marine and subsequently the Artemis 20 was to create an even keel within the sailing fraternity that will allow both able and disabled sailors to race against each other with the same rules, the same boats and no unfair advantage to anybody.
