How Long is a Yacht Charter Season?

With two main chartering seasons per year, discover the best time to hire a private yacht.

By Kim Ayling

Chartering a luxury yacht is one of the most immersive vacations one can take. Unflappable service, ultimate privacy and the beauty of the open sea in a dreamy location; no wonder the industry is seeing a huge rise in interest. After unprecedented demand in both 2020 and 2021, this coming yacht charter season is once again set to be busier than ever, so understanding the yachting industry jargon is essential – especially for first-time charterers.

To help you secure the perfect charter yacht in the perfect place, Elite Traveler breaks down exactly how long each yacht charter season lasts, the difference between high and low season and what industry insiders mean by ‘shoulder season’, as well as the best places to travel are during different times of the year.

Yacht charter seasons explained

If you’ve never chartered a yacht before, deciphering the seasons can be tricky. There are actually two primary types of ‘season’: winter vs summer, and high vs low. Winter/summer seasons each last around six months and refer to both location and time of the year; summer yacht charter season spans from around April/May through October, while the winter season starts in November and runs through April.

The summer/winter seasons are dictated by the weather and water conditions, with areas such as Northern Europe and the Mediterranean most popular during the summer season, while destinations in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Florida dominate the winter yacht charter season.

High/low season (also known as peak/off-peak season), on the other hand, refers to the busier and quieter times the yachting calendar, with peaks in both the summer and winter seasons. During the winter, Christmas and New Year are the peak yacht charter periods, with July and August being the busiest in the summer season. During these times yacht availability tends to be more limited and prices are often higher.

Peak vs off-peak yacht charter costs

As with any vacation, booking a yacht charter during peak season will inevitably be more expensive. For example, the ultra-luxe Secret superyacht (who features a swimming pool, separate Jacuzzi, cinema room and fully equipped gym) is available to charter for €840,000 (approximately $990,000) during low season, whereas during both the winter and summer high seasons weekly costs begin at €875,000 ($1.29m).

You’ll also find that local events, such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, will impact yacht availability and weekly chartering costs throughout both high and low seasons.

Can you charter a yacht out of season.

Given that different parts of the world have different peak seasons, you’ll find that at pretty much any given time of the year, you will be able to charter a luxury yacht. However, bear in mind that the summer/winter seasons are primarily in place due to weather; while many luxury yachts are impressively durable, with explorer yachts designed to handle all weathers, yachting is generally best enjoyed in warmer climates and calmer seas.

So, while it may be possible to charter a yacht in Northern Europe during winter, you may be disappointed to find significantly higher rainfall and lower temperatures. Equally, while the Caribbean and Florida are both known for enjoying generally good weather all year round, don’t disregard the threat of hurricane season, which tends to be from June to November.

You may also find that your preferred yacht is only available in certain destinations at certain times of the year. For example, leading yacht charter company Burgess only offers the hybrid yacht Home for cruising in the Mediterranean during the summer season and in the Caribbean during winter. Ultimately individual yacht availability is dictated by her owner; if they want to enjoy their vessel for themselves during certain months of the year, she won’t be available to charter.

The best way to secure both your desired vessel and ensure a smooth, comfortable cruising experience is to enlist the help of a yacht broker, who will be able to advise you on the best time of year to visit certain destinations as well as use their industry connections to find the best yacht for your needs.

Shoulder seasons

When looking into chartering a yacht you will also hear of shoulder seasons, which refer to the periods that sit either side of the peak seasons, running from April – May, and September – October. For many, the shoulder seasons are the most preferable time to book a yacht charter: demand for boats, berths and anchorages tends to be far lower and crowds onshore will be smaller. For many, the weather is also more agreeable during shoulder seasons with a light breeze cutting through the heat of the sun.

How long is an individual charter?

In addition to understanding the length and meaning of different yacht charter seasons, you should also consider how long you want to be on board. Most charter companies tend to operate in week-long blocks, but the average is about ten days – again, a yacht broker will be able to negotiate your desired charter length.

[See also: The Maltese Falcon: A Timeless Icon of the Yacht Industry]

However, while most people tend to charter for one or two weeks, those with time on their hands sometimes opt to charter for extended periods, with some even staying on board for an entire season. On larger vessels, onboard amenities will typically include office spaces (if not full conference rooms) and WiFi connections allowing for business to continue as usual during long-term yacht charters.

When to book a yacht charter

According to yacht charter company Northrop & Johnson , if you want to vacation during the peak seasons you should reach out to a broker no later than ten months in advance to ensure your first choice of boat and berths, with many yachts booked up a year in advance. However, three to six months ahead of time will usually be suitable for off-season yacht charters.

Yacht Charter Seasons: Where Can I go and When?

14th jun 2021 by rightboat team.

Rightboat logo

The world is bursting with incredible yacht charter destinations, from the ever-popular Mediterranean and Caribbean, to the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean, North America and beyond. Being presented with this dazzling array of golden beaches and picturesque coastlines makes it hard to choose where to go, but you can narrow it down by charter season. Figuring out yacht charter seasons can be a bit tricky, as they are classified not just as summer and winter, but high and low too.

Here we will take a look at the seasons and which destinations are best for a family yacht charter to help you choose your next holiday at sea.

Yacht charter seasons defined.

Summer and winter seasons last around six months each, with the summer yacht charter season stretching from April/May through to early October, and the winter season running from November through to April. The weather is the most obvious factor in determining the best sailing or boating seasons, but low and high seasons within those periods play an important role too.

High and low seasons – also referred to as peak or off-peak seasons – focus on busier and quieter times in the yachting calendar. For example, Christmas and New Year mark high season points during winter, when demand is high, availability limited and prices sometimes higher. Likewise, the hurricane season of the Caribbean is an example of low season, when boats hunker down for a few weeks and allow the storms to pass over. In the Mediterranean, July and August are bursting at the seams, and mark the high point of the summer season.

While smaller charter boats will usually be located in one place, and you can therefore charter them out of season if you choose, you can expect larger charter yachts such as superyachts to move from one region of the world to another as they follow the better weather. So if you have your heart set on a particular yacht, ask the broker for its annual charter itinerary.

Shoulder Seasons

Shoulder seasons are a great way to make the most of temperate climates, fewer crowds, lower prices and more availability. They refer to the period either side of the high season, so in summer would be April and October, and in winter November and March, and offer fantastic opportunities for a budget yacht charter. As mentioned, larger yachts may have moved on to new cruising destinations by this point, but smaller boats or those who are locally-based will be able to offer less stifling weather, quiet anchorages and marinas, less demand for boats and discounted prices.

Chartering a yacht out of season

Seasons have been long-established for a reason, but that isn’t to say you can’t charter out of season. We’ve taken a look at shoulder seasons, and your best bet is to stick as close to those as possible, but you’ll find boats at any time of the year. Keep in mind however that you’re choosing a time when the weather might not be favourable – rain or cold weather can put a downer on activities for example – or you struggle to find attractions and restaurants open. In off-the-beaten-track destinations such as Alaska, ice might hinder access to and from marinas, or strong winds such as the hurricanes which pass through the Caribbean from June to November might make cruising uncomfortable or impossible.

Summer Season Charter Destinations

The Mediterranean is the golden girl of summer yachting destinations, with tantalizing coasts, ancient cities, beautiful islands and rich culture at every turn. From the glamour of the French Riviera and Italy’s Amalfi Coast, to the beauty of the Balearic and Croatian islands, it is the yachting capital of the world. But the Mediterranean isn’t the only summer destination worth visiting, with North America, the America’s and South Pacific on the list too.

1. Mediterranean summer yachting destinations: Greece, Italy, Croatia, Balearic, Sardinia, French Riviera and Turkey.

2. North European summer yachting destinations: Consider northern European countries during the long summer days, where the UK, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic Sea offer up spectacular natural beauty, midnight sun, vast archipelagos and wild coasts.

3. Alaska: Alaska’s wild lands, remote bays and bountiful wildlife make it one of the most adventure-filled destinations in the world. The summer months, with their long days and milder weather conditions, make for the best time to visit the gargantuan national parks, crashing glaciers and see once-in-a-lifetime wildlife.

Winter Season Charter Destinations

The Caribbean is the focus of the winter yachting season, with St Barts, St Martin, the Virgin Islands and Bahamas the tip of the iceberg of what this island-spattered region has to offer. Yet think further afield too, and there are some dazzling destinations waiting for you.

1. Caribbean winter yachting destinations: Whether you opt for the pink sand beaches of the Bahamas, the perfect sailing conditions of the Leeward Islands, or the glamour of St Barts, you’ll find it in the Caribbean. From Jamaica’s legendary culture to the Dutch Antilles and Grenadines, there are corners of solitude, remote islands and lively beaches to discover.

2. The America’s winter yachting destinations: Mexico and Florida share the same Caribbean waters but offer a completely different vibe for a yacht charter. Explore the flamboyant Florida Keys or venture along the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico in search of ancient ruins and wildlife-filled rainforests.

3. South Pacific winter yachting destinations: There are few places dreamier than the South Pacific. Emerald-topped islands, golden atolls and fish-laden turquoise seas beg exploration, whether it’s a family holiday, romantic getaway or once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Countries such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea offer virtually year-round charter opportunities the winter months are the driest and offer the most favourable conditions. Try scuba diving, climb hidden waterfalls or get to know the local communities of these far-flung islands.

4. Indian Ocean winter yachting destinations: The Seychelles and Maldives offer some of the most sublime cruising destinations on the planet, their iridescent waters teeming with marine life and their beaches powder white. Sri Lanka has a rich history and national parks filled with wildlife, while Mauritius’ underwater world is a maze of colourful coral reefs.

When to book a yacht charter

If you’re planning on chartering a yacht in the peak season, book early! As with anything where demand is high, the sooner you get your deposit paid the better. Out of the peak times, you may be able to secure a more last-minute charter at a discounted price (see our article on How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Boat? ). As a general rule, you’ll want to allow 10-12 months in advance during peak times, and three to six months in advance for low season charters. But be sure to get in touch with us at Rightboat.com at any time of the year as we have boats all over the world waiting to be chartered and connections with all the top boat operators. We won’t leave you high and dry.

How long is a yacht charter season.

Patrick Maflin

If you’re planning to charter a private yacht, you may be wondering what time of year would be best to do it.

As you may be aware, there’s two main chartering seasons per year, and fees vary considerably depending on the period you choose.

What is a Yacht Charter?

When are the yacht charter seasons, how long is the summer charter season, popular summer charter locations, how long is the winter charter season, popular winter charter locations, year round charters, peak vs off-peak yacht charter prices, can you charter yachts off-season, what are shoulder seasons, how long is an individual charter, can i get a job working on a yacht charter.

Couple Drinking Cocktails on Yacht Charter

Chartering a yacht is probably one of the ultimate choices in dream vacations for many.

Engaging in the beauty of the open sea in a luxurious setting and a great service is surely a thrilling and unforgettable experience.

The demand for yacht chartering has been on the rise over recent years, and yacht charter seasons are understandably busy periods.

Every charter destination will have its yacht charter season.

This refers to the months during which the cruising conditions are the most suitable, and hence, during such a time the charters will be more popular.

The charter season refers to the time of year when it’s best to rent a yacht for a vacation.

It’s also the time when most charter companies will be operating.

The two yacht charter seasons are the winter and the summer season.

These are dictated by the weather and the water conditions of the particular locations.

For instance, in the case of the Mediterranean the summer season is most popular, whereas in the case of the Caribbean the winter charter season is more in demand.

Both seasons will last around six months.

Here is a more detailed explanation of the yacht charter seasons, and related aspects.

Summer Charter Season

The Summer Season is a time for sunny weather and warm temperatures.

Several cultural affairs occur during this season too.

The Summer charter season starts off in late April, and runs through until mid-September.

The peak charter season in the Mediterranean is from July til August.

Another relatively popular summer destination is New England in the US.

Here however the summer season is considerably shorter as it runs from mid-June through August.

The high season runs between mid-July to mid-August.

The Mediterranean is definitely the world’s most popular yacht charter destination for the summer season.

Due to the temperate climate during such months, it’s an ideal time of year for the perfect vacation at sea.

The Italian Riviera and Sicily, and the Amalfi Coast are popular charter regions.

Then there’s Cannes and the French Riviera which are also very popular summer charter locations.

Other locations that are also sought after include Croatia, Greece, Monaco, Corsica, and as mentioned earlier, New England.

Famous events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix coincide with this season.

Winter Charter Season

The Winter Season is the ideal time for chartering a yacht if you are considering the Caribbean.

During this time of year, many get away from the cold weather to indulge in the sun of these popular locations.

The Winter charter season is also about six months long.

It kicks off in late October and runs through March.

The peak charter season in the Caribbean is from late December, during the Christmas period, and all through the month of March.

The Caribbean is considered to be the mecca for winter charters.

The Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos are popular locations where there are hundreds of beaches one can enjoy, and many beautiful locations to explore and indulge in.

The weather during this time in these locations is warm, making it ideal for yachting.

Thailand, the Seychelles, Tahiti and the South Pacific also make for very popular winter charter destinations.

Thailand, for instance, is ideal for those who like snorkeling, or if you plan to engage in island hopping.

Tahiti is also a great location for snorkeling, as well as diving and hiking as it is renowned for its natural beauty, and its intriguing black sand beaches.

It’s also worth noting that some destinations offer chartering all year round.

Florida, for instance, is a very popular destination regardless of the time of year.

The Bahamas offer hundreds of islands for exploration and adventuring.

Nassau is renowned for its numerous beaches and great golf courses, while The Exumas is popular for cliff diving and snorkelling.

Miami and the Florida Keys are popular cruising locations all year round too.

Luxury Yacht Dining Table

As a general rule of thumb, charters during high season can cost around 30% more than low season.

Therefore, the best time for signing up for a yacht charter is during the pre-season.

One should avoid waiting more than two weeks before the scheduled start date.

It is possible to charter off season.

However, this will mean that there’s bound to be fewer options than what you’d be able to find during the high or peak season.

During off season you might also encounter certain problems, such as managing to get crew members.

This is even more problematic if you plan to make a longer sea trip.

Moreover, the general weather conditions will not be as favourable as they are during the peak season.

The shoulder season is the term used to describe the middle point between seasons.

This means that it’s the time between the high and the low season, and between the low and high season.

The majority of yachts tend to be booked by this time.

However, it’s also a time when companies will be trying to clear out what’s left, in order to make room for new inventory for the upcoming season.

As a result, the shoulder season might be a good time to book.

Having said that, it’s important to be aware that the shoulder season does not last long, so it’s best to plan to book the ideal yacht for your preferences.

An individual charter generally lasts a week or ten days.

However, there are also those who charter for several weeks, or for a month.

The minimum days for a yacht charter are often two, three or four, depending on the company.

Yacht Charter Crew Member

During yachting season, there’s ample opportunity to work aboard a yacht to potentially earn a very lucrative income.

Competition is fierce however, so you’ll need to be well prepared and learn all the best tips and tricks on how to get into the yachting industry .

More importantly, you’ll need to have certain qualifications and certificates to ensure you’re fit, able and sufficiently trained to work in such an environment, not to mention having plenty of yachting experience.

But once onboard, the perks are very attractive.

Typically, yacht crew receive around 10 - 20% tips from charter guests on top of their monthly salaries.

And if your time spent at sea extends well beyond 183 days per annum, then you could qualify for the seafarers earnings deduction , meaning all income from yachting is completely tax free!

If you’re serious about becoming a yacht crew member, then your best bet is to go dockwalking to try to pick up some daywork.

And if you intend to become a fully fledged yachtie working at sea, make sure to enrol on an STCW Basic Safety Training course.

Also, have your health checked by a professional to be issued an ENG 1 Medical certificate .

This ensures you do not suffer from any serious medical conditions that may impede you from performing duties at sea.

We hope that through this guide you have gained a better understanding of the yacht charter seasons.

Whether you’re planning the ultimate in luxury vacations or have aspirations to work onboard a superyacht, you’ll be fully aware of where and when each yachting high and low charter seasons are.

Navigating Yacht Charter Seasons: How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season?

  • February 8, 2024

Embarking on a yacht charter adventure is an exhilarating prospect, offering the promise of boundless seas and unforgettable experiences. Yet, understanding the duration and nuances of the yacht charter season is paramount for crafting an optimal voyage. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the intricacies of yacht charter seasons, exploring their duration, variations across regions, and factors influencing their length. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a novice explorer, join us as we navigate the seas and answer the question, ‘How long is a yacht charter season?’

Defining Yacht Charter Seasons: Understanding How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

When we look at the question of ‘how is a yacht charter season’, we have to look at how yacht charter seasons are characterized by distinct periods throughout the year, each offering unique advantages and considerations for prospective charterers. These seasons are influenced by a multitude of factors, including weather patterns, tourist demand, and regional festivities. Understanding the distinctions between high, shoulder, and low seasons is essential for planning a successful yacht charter expedition.

High Season: Peak Time for Yacht Charters and Understanding How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

High season represents the zenith of yacht charter activity, typically spanning from late spring to early autumn in many popular sailing destinations. The weather is generally favorable during this period, with warm temperatures and clear skies prevailing across the seas. As vacationers flock to coastal havens to bask in the sun and savor the delights of seaside living, demand for yacht charters reaches its pinnacle. Consequently, charter rates soar to reflect the heightened demand, making high season the most expensive time to embark on a yacht charter adventure.

Shoulder Season: Ideal Balance of Weather and Price, and Understanding How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

The shoulder season occupies the transitional periods between high and low seasons, offering a harmonious blend of favorable weather conditions and more moderate charter rates. Spanning from late autumn to early spring, the shoulder season presents an attractive alternative for savvy travelers seeking to avoid the crowds and capitalize on budget-friendly pricing. While the weather may be slightly cooler during this time, it remains conducive to enjoyable sailing experiences, with tranquil seas and gentle breezes prevailing in many regions.

Low Season: Exploring Off-Peak Opportunities and Understanding How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

Low season, also known as the off-peak period, encompasses the winter months in many yacht charter destinations. While the prospect of cooler temperatures and potential inclement weather may deter some travelers, the low season presents unique opportunities for intrepid adventurers seeking to explore the seas without breaking the bank. Charter rates plummet during this time, offering significant savings for budget-conscious charterers. Additionally, destinations that are typically overrun with tourists during high season become serene sanctuaries, allowing visitors to enjoy a more authentic and tranquil experience.

Global Variations in Yacht Charter Seasons and Understanding How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

Yacht charter seasons vary considerably across regions, influenced by diverse climatic conditions, geographical features, and cultural factors. While the Mediterranean and the Caribbean follow similar seasonal patterns, with high season typically spanning from late spring to early autumn, other destinations may exhibit distinct variations. For instance, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific experience tropical climates characterized by wet and dry seasons, leading to unique yacht charter dynamics influenced by monsoonal patterns.

Planning Your Yacht Charter: Factors to Consider:

When planning a yacht charter expedition, it’s imperative to consider a myriad of factors to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. Weather preferences, budget constraints, destination popularity, and personal preferences should all inform your decision-making process. Whether you prioritize warm temperatures, fewer crowds, or budget-friendly rates, selecting the right season can enhance your yachting experience.

Weather Considerations: Impact on Charter Season Length:

Weather patterns play a pivotal role in determining the duration and characteristics of the yacht charter season in any region. While some destinations boast consistent weather conditions throughout the year, others experience pronounced seasonal variations, with distinct wet and dry seasons influencing charter availability and pricing. Understanding these weather fluctuations and their implications for yacht chartering is essential for mitigating potential disruptions and ensuring a safe and enjoyable sailing experience.

Flexibility and Adaptability: Key to Enjoying Any Season and Understanding How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

Flexibility and adaptability are indispensable virtues for maximizing the enjoyment of your yacht charter adventure, irrespective of the season. Embracing an open-minded approach to itinerary planning and activity selection allows charterers to capitalize on the unique opportunities presented by each season. Whether sunbathing on deck in the Mediterranean summer or exploring cultural attractions during the Caribbean winter, embracing flexibility ensures a memorable and fulfilling yachting experience.

Regional Insights: Yacht Charter Seasons Across the Globe

While the Mediterranean and the Caribbean dominate the yachting scene, other regions offer their own unique sailing experiences with distinct yacht charter seasons. Understanding how long is a yacht charter season in each area is essential for planning your ideal sailing adventure.

  • Southeast Asia: The yacht charter season in Southeast Asia varies depending on the destination. Countries like Thailand and Malaysia experience a monsoon season from May to October, characterized by heavy rainfall and rough seas. However, the dry season from November to April offers excellent sailing conditions, with calm waters and gentle breezes.
  • South Pacific: The South Pacific boasts a tropical climate with consistent temperatures year-round. The wet and dry seasons influence yacht charter seasons in destinations like Fiji , Tahiti , and the Cook Islands. The dry season, typically from May to October, is the peak yacht charter season, offering ideal sailing conditions and abundant sunshine.
  • Northern Europe: The yacht charter season in Northern Europe, including destinations like Norway, Sweden , and Scotland, is influenced by the region’s temperate climate. From June to August, summer is the most popular time for yacht charters, with long daylight hours and mild temperatures. While the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn offer fewer crowds and lower charter rates, they may also experience more variable weather conditions.

Seasonal Considerations for Destination Selection

When planning a yacht charter, it’s essential to consider the seasonal nuances of your chosen destination:

  • High Season Destinations: If you’re drawn to the vibrant energy and bustling atmosphere of high season, destinations like the French Riviera, Amalfi Coast, and Greek Islands are popular choices. These regions experience peak demand during the summer months, with a plethora of events, festivals, and activities to enjoy.
  • Shoulder Season Escapes: For those seeking a balance between favorable weather and reduced crowds, destinations like Croatia, Turkey, and the Balearic Islands offer enticing options during the shoulder season. Enjoy quieter anchorages, lower charter rates, and pleasant sailing conditions as you explore these Mediterranean gems.
  • Low Season Adventures: Embrace off-peak opportunities by venturing to destinations like the British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, or the Whitsunday Islands during the low season. While the weather may be less predictable, you’ll benefit from significant cost savings and uncrowded anchorages, allowing for a more intimate and immersive yachting experience.

Safety and Seamanship: Essential Considerations for All Seasons

Regardless of the season, safety is paramount when embarking on a yacht charter. Here are some key safety considerations to keep in mind:

  • Weather Monitoring: Stay informed about weather forecasts and potential hazards, such as storms or strong currents, that may affect your sailing route. Utilize advanced weather forecasting tools and consult with local authorities or experienced sailors for insights into regional weather patterns.
  • Navigation Skills: Ensure that you and your crew possess adequate navigation skills to safely navigate the waters, especially during adverse weather conditions or in unfamiliar areas. Familiarize yourself with navigational aids, charts, and onboard instruments, and consider hiring a professional skipper or crew if needed.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Equip your yacht with essential safety equipment, including life jackets, first aid kits, flares, and emergency communication devices. Develop a comprehensive emergency plan that outlines procedures for responding to accidents, medical emergencies, or adverse weather events.
  • Seamanship Training: Invest in seamanship training for yourself and your crew to enhance your sailing skills and confidence on the water. Participate in practical training courses, such as maneuvering drills, docking practice, and man-overboard exercises, to improve your ability to handle the yacht in various scenarios.

As responsible stewards of the seas, it’s essential to prioritize sustainability and minimize your environmental impact while enjoying your yacht charter and understanding how long is a yacht charter season. Here are some eco-friendly practices to incorporate into your yachting experience:

How Long is a Yachting Season?

When planning your yacht charter adventure, one common question that often emerges is, “How long is a yacht charter season?” Unlike more traditional holiday seasons, the yachting season isn’t set in stone and can vary significantly depending on a range of factors, including the location, weather conditions, and personal preferences. To understand the nuances behind this concept, let’s dive into the intricate world of yachting seasons.

Everything You Need to Know About the Yachting Season

When exploring the timeline of a yacht charter season, it’s important to note that these seasons aren’t globally uniform. Each region has its distinct yachting season influenced by local climate, culture, and regulations. Regardless of location, the yachting season is typically divided into three periods: high season, low season, and shoulder season.

The high season aligns with the peak tourist season in most places. The weather is typically at its finest, and charter conditions are optimal. The waters are often bustling with activity, and local ports teem with vibrant nightlife and events. However, due to the high demand, yacht charter rates are at their highest during this period. Although the busier season, it is of course possible to find peace and quiet from the madness- and this is one of the many perks of yacht charter.

In contrast, the low season aligns with the off-peak tourist season, when the weather can be less favorable. The advantage, though, is that the seas are quieter, the atmosphere more serene, and the charter rates more affordable, making it perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape.

The shoulder season straddles the space between the high and low seasons. During this period, you can still enjoy decent weather and reduced rates. It’s a good compromise for those who want to avoid the peak season crowd without compromising too much on the weather.

How Weather Patterns Affect Yacht Charter Seasons

Weather patterns play a crucial role in determining the length and timing of the yacht charter season. In regions vulnerable to extreme weather events such as hurricanes or monsoons, the yacht charter season is typically shorter and carefully planned around these periods. Safety is paramount in the world of yachting, and all responsible charter companies will avoid operating in potentially dangerous weather conditions.

Sudden weather changes can pose safety risks, making it crucial for yacht charter operators to be aware of typical weather patterns and seasonal changes when planning their schedules. Consequently, understanding the local weather trends of your chosen yachting destination is critical. Researching how long a yacht charter season lasts and how it aligns with the region’s weather patterns is a crucial step in planning a successful yacht charter. Can You Charter When It’s Off-Season?

Yes, chartering a yacht during the off-season is possible and can offer its unique benefits. The term “off-season” can often be misleading as it doesn’t necessarily indicate bad weather. Many popular yachting destinations still boast enjoyable weather during the off-season. Plus, the lower demand often translates to discounted charter rates and a less crowded environment, which can be a win-win for many yacht enthusiasts.

However, it’s essential to remember that weather conditions can be unpredictable during the off-season, and certain services and attractions may not be available. It’s always a good idea to do thorough research and consult with yacht charter experts to ensure a smooth and enjoyable off-season yachting experience.

An Overview of Yachting Seasons

What are high, low and shoulder seasons.

The high season is when demand is at its highest, often coinciding with the best weather and busiest ports. On the flip side, the low season corresponds to the time of the year when demand is at its lowest, which is often accompanied by less ideal weather conditions. The shoulder season sits between these two, providing a balance of relatively good weather and reduced prices.

The Pros and Cons of Chartering During High, Low or Shoulder Seasons

Every yachting season has its pros and cons, and understanding these can help you make an informed decision about when to charter a yacht.

Chartering during the high season offers the best weather conditions, a vibrant social scene, and a myriad of activities. However, the increased demand during this time often results in higher charter rates and crowded marinas.

On the other hand, the low season is characterized by peace and tranquility, and charter rates are usually at their lowest. However, the weather might be less predictable, and some facilities may be closed.

The shoulder season can be an ideal choice for those seeking a balance between price and good weather. It offers the potential for fewer crowds, reduced rates, and decent weather conditions.

Some Tips for Planning a Yachting Trip During the Yacht Season

Planning your yachting trip during the yacht season requires careful consideration. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable yacht charter adventure:

  • Do thorough research : Understand the typical weather patterns, cultural events, and local regulations of your planned destination. This will help you anticipate what to expect and prepare accordingly.
  • Consider your budget : High season, with its premium prices, might not be the best choice for everyone. Off-peak or shoulder seasons can offer excellent value for money, and gives more room more potential discounts.
  • Book in advance : Popular yachts and destinations get booked quickly, especially during the high season. Early booking ensures you get the yacht of your choice and can help you secure good deals.

107-foot Burger

As the summer yacht charter season nears its peak, several popular charter fleets have added yachts in destinations all around the world.

In the Bahamas, Fraser just welcomed the 107-foot Burger Silver Seas . It’s a 1998 build that most recently was refitted in 2022, and that will base in the Bahamas all year round. Accommodations are for eight guests in four staterooms that can be set up for families or groups of couples. This yacht charters with an Intrepid tender for watersports fun.

168-foot Feadship

Up in New England, Edmiston has welcomed 168-foot Feadship Acta to the charter fleet. Acta is a 2007 build that accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms. Equipment includes Quantum zero-speed stabilizers for guest comfort at anchor, and the yacht has a wheelchair-accessible elevator and side deck. The master stateroom is on the bridge deck with expansive views.

131-foot Westport

For charter clients seeking more exotic locales, IYC has just added the 131-foot Westport Rule No. 1 to its fleet, with inquiries being accepted through September 2025 for Panama, Mexico and Costa Rica. Rule No. 1 is a 2011 build that most recently was refitted in 2023, with accommodations for 12 guests in five staterooms. This yacht charters with a 37-foot Freeman tender for fishing, and has toys that include an inflatable slide.

75-foot Sunreef

Also available farther afield is the 75-foot Sunreef Diana , a sailing catamaran that’s in French Polynesia as part of the Y.CO fleet. Diana is a 2017 build that just completed a refit this year. The yacht accommodates eight guests in four staterooms. Amenities and crew services include a hot tub, a fitness trainer, a masseuse, a yoga instructor, and various water toys.

137-foot Kingship

In Croatia and the West Mediterranean, the 137-foot Kingship Ocean’s Seven has joined the Fraser fleet. This is a 2012 build that was most recently refitted this year. Interiors on the yacht are by Vripack, with five staterooms for 10 guests. The master spans the full beam on the main deck and has a king-size berth.

Are there any options being advertised for scuba diving? Indeed, Edmiston says the 154-foot Feadship Lady Victoria is still accepting inquiries this summer in the Bahamas, and is offering scuba diving right from the yacht. Accommodations are for 12 guests in six staterooms, with a master that has its own deck and a VIP on the main deck. The swim platform can be extended and raised for diving, or submerged for guests who want to step right into the sea.

When is Yacht Charter Season? The Perfect Time for a Sailing Vacation

yachting charter season

If you’ve ever fantasized about being out on the open sea with the wind in your sails, you’re probably considering a yacht charter. This experience can offer the unparalleled freedom of exploring the world’s most beautiful coasts at your own pace. But if you’ve begun planning, you may be wondering: when exactly is yacht charter season ? The answer, while varying from location to location, is usually quite accommodating to potential adventurers. In this article, we explore the best times to charter a yacht for your dream sailing vacation.

Understanding Yacht Charter Seasons

The yacht charter season generally revolves around two primary factors: weather conditions and the destination’s peak tourism periods. Most popular charter destinations have specific high, low, and shoulder seasons.

High Season: This period corresponds with the best weather conditions and the highest tourist influx. It’s when the sun shines the brightest, and the seas are at their calmest.

Low Season: The low season often coincides with more challenging weather conditions, such as the rainy season or even the hurricane season in some locations. Tourism is slower during this period, which can result in more competitive charter rates.

Shoulder Season: The times between the high and low seasons are known as the shoulder seasons. These periods can offer a balanced blend of good weather and fewer crowds, often providing excellent value for money.

The Caribbean Yacht Charter Season

The Caribbean, renowned for its warm climate, white sandy beaches , and clear waters, promises an unforgettable yacht charter experience . Here, the high season occurs during the winter months, from December to April, offering an excellent escape from the winter blues. The region’s shoulder season usually occurs in November and late April to early June, providing a compromise between favorable weather and lower rates. The low season coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season from June to November, which can pose risks to sailors.

The Mediterranean Yacht Charter Season

The Mediterranean, with its stunning landscapes, cultural treasures, and azure waters, is a prime yacht charter destination. The high season in the Mediterranean runs from July to August, coinciding with warm, sunny weather and the European summer holidays. The shoulder season spans May, June, September, and October, offering ideal sailing conditions with fewer crowds. The low season falls over the winter months when weather conditions can be unpredictable.

South Pacific and Southeast Asia Yacht Charter Seasons

The South Pacific and Southeast Asia are gaining popularity for yacht charters, thanks to their stunning landscapes and diverse marine life. The high season typically occurs during the dry season, from May to October, for the South Pacific, and November to April for Southeast Asia. The shoulder season in these regions generally surrounds the high season, while the low season corresponds with the wet season when sailing can be challenging due to tropical storms and cyclones.

Yacht Charter in the Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean, encompassing the Seychelles, Maldives, and Mauritius, offers a unique blend of cultures and spectacular marine environments. Here, the high season tends to span from November to April, the months when the monsoons are at bay. The shoulder season is in May and October, and the low season spans from June to September, during the monsoon season.

Choosing the perfect time for a yacht charter involves a balance between weather, crowd levels, and budget considerations. While the high season promises the best weather and bustling ports, the shoulder season can offer a happy medium between pleasant sailing conditions and lower rates. The low season, although posing some weather-related challenges, can also present opportunities for savvy sailors looking for the most affordable charter rates.

Whether you dream of cruising the Mediterranean or sailing around the Caribbean, there’s a yacht charter season that fits your schedule and preferences. Always remember to check local weather trends and advisories as you plan, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable sailing vacation.

How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

Summer and winter are the two main yacht charter seasons. Each lasts roughly six months. The summer season, popular in destinations like the Mediterranean, runs from late April to mid-September, while the winter season, favored in the Caribbean, extends from November to April. Each Season has peak periods (2-3 months) when demand and prices are highest.

Factors Influencing Yacht Charter Season Duration

How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

The length of a yacht charter season depends on different factors. These factors vary significantly worldwide but understanding them is important when planning a hassle-free yacht charter or vacation. These factors are:

  • Geographical location
  • Climate and weather conditions
  • Popularity of the destination

Let’s discuss each factor influencing the length of a yacht charter season in detail.

Geographical Location

Latitude determines the sunlight’s intensity and duration. It directly impacts the temperature of water and air. Tropical regions like the Caribbean have year-round warmth and lengthy yacht charter seasons. On the other hand, destinations farther from the equator, like the Mediterranean, experience seasonal variations.

For instance, the UAE boasts sunshine and warm waters year-round, making yacht rentals in UAE possible throughout the year. However, the peak season falls between October and April. The temperatures are mild, and levels of humidity are normal. So, this provides enjoyable experiences to people looking for a yacht charter in the UAE.

Climate and Weather Conditions

Mediterranean May-October Warm, dry summers with calm seas. Pleasant temperatures (25-30 C/77-86 F). Shoulder seasons (spring/autumn) offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds.
Caribbean December-April Dry Season with minimal rainfall. Consistent trade winds. Temperatures average 25-28 C (77-82 F). Hurricane season (June-November) requires careful planning.
South Pacific May-October Dry Season with low humidity. Warm temperatures (25-30 C/77-86 F). Cyclone season (November-April) can affect some areas.
Southeast Asia Varies by region Andaman Sea: November-April (dry Season). Similan Islands: December-April (calm seas). Monsoon season (May-October) impacts some areas with rain and strong winds.
United Arab Emirates October-April Mild temperatures (20-30 C / 68-86 F). Low humidity. Calm seas. Summers are extremely hot and humid.

Calm seas, pleasant temperatures, and minimal rainfall mean the best conditions for travel, particularly for yachts traveling around the world . However, these factors vary depending on the destination. For instance, the Caribbean has pleasant conditions from December to April. It has consistent sunshine, gentle winds, and minimal rain showers.

Popularity of the Destination

High demand for yacht charters can significantly extend the traditional boundaries of a season. For example, this is evident in destinations like the UAE, where the many beaches in Dubai entice travelers even outside the peak summer months. Recognizing this sustained interest, yacht operators often extend their services during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.

The purpose is to cater to those seeking a more tranquil experience with fewer crowds and potentially lower rates. In addition, this trend is not limited to the Mediterranean or Middle East. In regions like the Caribbean, the charm of turquoise waters and pristine beaches creates a consistent demand for yacht rentals throughout the year.

So, you can enjoy the hidden coves on an explorer yacht in the Caribbean or cruise along Dubai, the best yachting destination in the world with its glamorous coastline. It means the popularity of a destination can translate into an extended charter season.

Tips for Planning a Yacht Charter Vacation Based on the Season

How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season

Planning a yacht charter vacation requires thorough planning and preparation. It involves considering the season as well because it can impact your experience. Here are the best tips to ensure an enjoyable, smooth, and hassle-free journey:

High or Peak Season

Always book early. Booking your charter in advance is important to secure your preferred yacht and itinerary. Besides, popular destinations can get crowded during peak season, especially in marinas and tourist hotspots like Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. Factor this into your itinerary if you prefer quieter anchorages.

During high or peak season, you must expect premium prices. Rates for yachts and services, even for renting a yacht for a day, are the highest during peak season. Therefore, you must budget accordingly.

Shoulder Season

You can often enjoy pleasant weather with fewer crowds, making it an ideal time for a more relaxed experience. Rates are lower than during peak season, offering good value for your money. Moreover, you must prepare yourself for slight variations in weather conditions, as shoulder seasons are transitional.

Experience the destination at its most peaceful and serene, with fewer tourists and more secluded anchorages. Yacht charter prices and other expenses are generally lowest during the low season. Research weather patterns carefully, as some destinations may experience less favorable conditions during certain months. So, this will help you rent a private yacht at an affordable price without any hassle.

How Long Is Yacht Charter Season?

By understanding how long yacht charter season is, you can properly plan for your next yacht charter vacation. Here is everything you need to know.

Charter season is the time of year that’s best for renting a yacht for vacations. That is also when most of the charter companies in the world are operating. Typically, there are two yacht charter seasons . That includes the summer season and the winter season.

The summer season runs from the beginning of May until the end of October, while the winter one commences in November to April. However, there are a few exceptions to these time zones, depending on where you are. Some countries will have a shorter season, while others will have a longer one.

Whether you are looking for a one-off charter, a regular source of income, or something in between, signing up for a yacht charter is a great way to enjoy a fun holiday. Keep in mind the best time to sign up for a yacht charter is during the pre-season and up to a week or two before the scheduled start date.

Yacht Charter Seasons

Yacht charter seasons are usually dictated by the water and weather conditions in the area where the yacht is stationed. Many things can affect the onset and duration of a season, including natural disasters, local preferences, and even politics.

According to experts who deal in yacht charters worldwide, other factors can influence when a yacht charter season starts and ends. These include the building seasons from one year to another. Some companies will use up their existing inventory before beginning operations with new boats or newly acquired boats.

Other charter companies will decide to start the business after a particular boat has been on a lease, while others may stop because they have not found an appropriate boat for their clientele to use.

Based on all these factors, you can see how long each season can be and what best fits your needs during each season. If you are planning, it is advisable to book a vessel before it becomes fully booked. If you opt for something last-minute, you will have fewer options and may need to compromise on your choices or settle for something that is not exactly what you want or need.

What Are Shoulder Seasons In Yachting?

The middle point of a season is called the shoulder season. That consists of the time between high and low seasons and between low and high seasons. It can come during a particular season, such as early summer or late spring. It could run from September to October and April to May in some countries.

A good number of yacht charters may already be booked by then, while other companies may still have availability depending on the operators and their business goals.

However, this is also true for the other end of the season, when the peak season ends or just before it ends, with most companies trying to clear out some of their inventory. That is in order to make room for new inventory coming in for the new season.

Depending on your needs for a vessel, this could be an ideal time to book one since there are choices but not so many that you will find it difficult to choose one from among them.

That said, this shoulder season doesn’t last long; therefore, you need to plan, or you might find yourself having problems getting the ideal yacht. If you’re planning on booking a San Diego yacht charter , booking your charter in May or June will be your best bet, because as the summer continues, your choice of dates will get smaller and smaller.

Can I Charter Out Of Season?

Yes, it is possible to charter out of season. However, that will translate to fewer options for chartering a yacht than getting one during the high or peak seasons. During peak seasons, there are many more choices available for you to choose.

You might also encounter problems getting crew members for the vessel, especially if you want to make longer sea trips. In other words, book early and be aware of what kind of season this is so that it won’t take you by surprise. You don’t want to arrive at your destination and find out that no one is available to go with your group on this particular trip since they all have assignments elsewhere.

Also, keep in mind that the reason why there are seasons is because of the general weather conditions. Peak yacht charter seeason is when the weather is best, which also means demand is highest.

How Long Is A Yacht Charter?

Some companies offer week-long blocks or ten days. However, if you have the time and resources, you can charter for several weeks, a month, or even two.

The minimum number of days for a yacht charter typically varies between two and four. Most choose to book their charter for a week. The average cruise with a week-long charter will cost approximately $15,000.

Most companies charge around $15,000 per week, and the price is dependent on the type of yacht and its equipment. A luxury yacht in a premium location could cost up to almost $50,000 per week! The good news is there ar emany charter companies that charge far less than that, and you can look up different locations and yacht sizes that always show their pricing.

The Bottom Line

Understanding how long yacht charter season is in the destination of your choice is critical for planning. Booking in the middle of peak season will be more expensive and give you far fewer options than booking a few months ahead of the season.

Yachting has become extremely popular over the past decade, especially since the launch of Beelow Deck, a famous reality tv series that shows off the yacthing experience.

Our advice is to do your research in the off season and book early to give yourself the best options and pricing available in the market.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

charter cost explained banner

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
  • Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

  • The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
  • Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
  • Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

  • The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
  • BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
  • Croatia – VAT: 13%
  • Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
  • France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Greece – VAT: 12%
  • Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Montenegro – NO VAT
  • New England – NO TAX
  • Spain – VAT: 21%
  • Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs

What are standard private charter yacht prices?

There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.

What affects charter yacht prices?

There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.

How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?

Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.

What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?

At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.

What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?

After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.

What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?

This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

Insurance: what does it cover, payment structure.

Planning a yacht charter is thrilling yet challenging, particularly when it comes to budgeting. The starting point is the yacht's base price, the weekly rental fee. But what about additional costs such as meals, beverages, local taxes, or fuel? How do these affect the overall cost? The encouraging part is that understanding yacht charter fees is straightforward. With guidance from our seasoned professionals, you can gain a clearer idea of the expenditure for your dream vacation. Yacht charter costs vary based on several elements: the yacht type, destination, local taxes, dates and the age of the yacht. Yacht charter prices span a broad spectrum. For instance, smaller sailing yachts and catamarans may start at around $10,000 per week, whereas more luxurious motor superyachts can exceed $100,000 per week. Wondering about other expenses? Our Charter Advice Guide, a key part of our planning resources, delves deep into the specifics of yacht charter costs.

After you have chosen your desired yacht, your yacht broker will prepare a legally binding contract; usually a standard agreement with conditions set by the terms applicable to the destination. Before you sign on the dotted line, it is important that you understand what it is that you are paying for and when it is due.

Base charter fee: All-Inclusive vs Plus Expenses

When it comes to crewed luxury yacht charters, you can choose from two types of vacations- "All-Inclusive" or  "Plus Expenses" charter experiences. But what do these classifications entail? Let's briefly compare:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters Certain charters, particularly small catamaran and monohull sailboat charters in the Virgin Islands, wooden Gulets in Turkey or Phinisis in Indonesia, offer different all-inclusive pricing packages. This means that the rates depend on the number of guests and cover some or all meals and beverages, water sports, and fuel expenses. However, dockage fees and taxes are typically billed as additional costs.
  • Plus Expenses Charters The rates for larger sailing or motor yachts are exclusive of operational costs, which are to be paid additionally. With these high-end charters, the base rate covers only the yacht rental. Extra charges, such as for food, beverages, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are billed separately. These running costs are usually covered by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) payment, generally set at 20-35% of the base charter rate depending on the size and location of the yacht. This amount is paid before the start of the charter.

The table below gives a quick comparision of what is generally included in the price for both charter types.

All Inclusive Plus Expenses
Check Package

Plus Expenses Charter Costs

In essence the base charter fee refers to the hire cost of the yacht itself, and implies that the yacht will be provided to you in full commission, with all equipment in working order and the yacht properly insured for marine risks.

In addition, the cost of the crew’s food, wages and clothing will be met by the owner for the entirety of the charter.

Charter rates are typically quoted per week (7 days), which in superyacht terms is generally accepted as the minimum period for yacht charters – although this is by no means set in stone.

The APA in Plus Expenses charters is typically about 25-40% of the yacht's base weekly charter rate (based on the size of yacht, location and yacht's fuel efficiency). This fee is collected before the start of the charter and acts like an expense fund that the captain can utilize during the trip to cover costs such as fuel, food and beverages, dockage fees and ad hoc incidental expenses.  At the end of the charter the captain will prepare a detailed statement of the APA expenditures, along with any unspent APA funds returned in cash.

Should expenses exceed the initial APA, you might need to top up the fund during the charter. This replenishment can be done in cash, but many opt to establish accounts with their charter brokers. These accounts can then be accessed upon the captain's request for additional funds.

Taxes & Value Added Tax (VAT)

For most yachts, regardless of being All-Inclusive or Plus Expenses , local taxes or Value Added Tax are NOT incorporated into their charter rate. It falls upon the charterer to pay these tax expenses before the charter commences. Tax rates can vary greatly depending on the destination; here's an brief overview of tax rates in some of the most sought-after yachting locations:

In the European Union (EU) recent harmonising changes to tax laws have affected VAT rates across most of the Mediterranean region. EU tax laws state that VAT will apply to vessels embarking or disembarking within their waters, although rates for VAT vary depending on the European destination. In France the current rate is 20% and in Italy it is 22%, whilst Turkey and Montenegro both charge 0% for EU-flagged yachts cruising their waters.

VAT also applies to yacht charters cruising The Bahamas , plus may also apply in some Caribbean islands.

Please consult your yacht charter broker  for further personalized advice if considering chartering in any of these areas.

Crew Gratuities

Although tipping is optional, it's customary to leave a gratuity for the crew. The typical range for tips is between 10-20%, and it should reflect the quality of service you and your guests experienced during your yacht charter.

It's best practice to hand over crew gratuities to the captain for distribution, ensuring that every crew member is fairly recognized. This approach is important because there are often less visible crew members, like the engineer and sous chef, working diligently behind the scenes to guarantee the success of your charter. It would be unfair for their contributions to go unrecognized.

Captain & Crew Gratuities (Tips): How much?

Cancellation Insurance

Charterers have the option to buy cancellation and curtailment insurance, akin to travel insurance. This insurance can provide coverage for costs in case the charter needs to be canceled or shortened. Charter brokers are equipped to assist in evaluating different insurance choices and typically offer a variety of options.

Delivery Fees

These fees are not typical for most charters, but if your charter takes place outside the yacht's regular cruising territory or a significant distance from its homeport, you might need to pay delivery fees. Usually, this will just involve covering the fuel costs for the journey.

The charter fee varies from one yacht to another for a number of reasons, such as its size, age, onboard amenities and time of year the yacht is chartered. We've listed below some of the most common factors that affect the base rate of a rental yacht.

Charter seasons

A yacht charter season can refer to the weather patterns of a particular destination or the peak times when demand for charter yachts is at its highest. Yacht charter seasons, therefore, are broken down into two distinct categories: Summer/Winter, and High/Low season.

View of the French Riviera

In terms of the yacht's base charter fee, high season rates will apply to the most popular periods for yacht charters – such as July and August in the Mediterranean or Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean . Low season rates will generally apply to all other periods.

Yacht Charter Seasons

Event pricing

A car races by yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix

Major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival are generally categorised as high season events , regardless of where they fall in the season, with yacht prices generally higher around these dates due to popular demand.

Unless you are keen to charter a yacht for a particular high season event, it is worth considering your dates carefully.

Shoulder seasons

The months straddling the high and low seasons are known as shoulder months, for example April and September for yacht charters around the Mediterranean, and can share much of the same weather and beautiful cruising conditions as the peak season whilst charter rates tend to be lower, making these months a great time for chartering a yacht.

Off-Season Yacht Charters

  • Onboard amenities

Aside from seasons and events, yachts of the same size can often differ in price based on their onboard amenities. A yacht which boasts a cinema or lavish water toys may have a higher base rate compared with a yacht with minimal amenities of the same size.

Cinema room onboard MY Axioma

If the pricing is unclear, be sure to ask your yacht broker to explain any disparities.

Once you are clear on the base charter fee of your chosen yacht, it is important to learn about the additional costs that will be applied on top, depending on the type of charter contract used.

MYBA Charter Agreement

The most widely used contract for yacht charters is a MYBA agreement (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association), which operates under Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT) .

This contract, often referred to as a "plus all expenses" contract, requires that you pay for items, such as fuel, delivery fees, food and drink, local taxes and dockage fees, as an additional expense applied over the base charter fee.

Typically, a charter party (this is the collective term for the total number of guests on a charter) will accumulate additional costs of between 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, depending on what is consumed. These expenses can be tracked through the use of an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) which we will cover in the next section.

Other charter contracts

Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) – sometimes referred to as Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT) – is another contract regularly used by the yachting industry, the terms of which are generally employed by smaller yacht charters in the Caribbean.

Otherwise known as a "mostly all-inclusive" agreement, CTI differs from Western Mediterranean Terms as it includes three meals, plus up to four hours cruising, per day.

In addition to the commonly used MYBA terms and Caribbean Terms Inclusive, there are also less frequently used terms such as Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms (SEMT) and Greek Terms (GT).

SEMT operates much in the same way as CTI, except it includes only two meals per day for guests instead of three, as it is assumed guests will dine ashore in the evenings. Greek Terms are similar to the MYBA terms apart from harbour and berthing fees, which are included under GT terms so long as they are within Greek waters.

If you are unsure what is included under the terms of your contract, be sure to ask your yacht charter broker .

For more in-depth information, please see our guide on yacht charter contracts below.

Yacht Charter Contracts

Typically, the APA accrues to approximately 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, though this does of course depend on your charter party’s tastes and requirements and could be far less or far greater than this estimation. For instance, charter guests who intend to regularly dine on caviar and vintage wine can expect to pay more, whereas guests on a sailing yacht charter that is anchored at sea for most nights can expect to save on fuel costs and hefty marina fees.

You can request an APA estimate from your yacht broker based on your charter party's onboard expectations.

What happens next?

The APA is payable one month prior to boarding the charter yacht (see 'Payment Structure' below), and is generally paid direct to the Captain.

Once the APA has been paid it will then be retained as a bank account of sorts, from which the Chef can provision the yacht ready for your charter and the Captain can make expenditures while keeping a strict record of what has been spent. It is important to note that all additional costs incurred throughout the charter are charged at cost with no mark-up.

At any point during the vacation you can request an up-to-date summary of the accounts as a way of keeping track of expenditures.

yachts docked in a marina at sunset

When you think of fuel costs, you may think of what is consumed by the yacht over the course of your charter.

However, there are further fuel costs to take into account that you may not have considered. These include;

  • Personal watercraft toys, such as jet skis
  • Tender boats used for transporting guests to and from the yacht, or for water sports activities
  • A yacht's generators whilst at anchor (shore-side electricty is used when docked at a marina)

Furthermore, the distance travelled and the speed at which the yacht cruises also affects the overall fuel costs, so it is important to bear these factors in mind when settling on your itinerary.

Dockage fees

These may vary widely depending on the destination and time of year from minimal to extravagant (think Port Hercule in Monaco during the Grand Prix).

If you are interested in booking any nights in marinas during your yacht charter, you should liaise with your broker who can advise on the various options available, including prices, around your chosen location and dates.

In general, the base charter fee of a yacht will include insurance for marine risk and third party liability insurance, which covers accidental damage and personal injury. It will also cover use of the yacht's watertoys and equipment.

Additional insurance

Although insurance is not generally connected to charter costs, it is useful to consider should you wish to take out additional insurance such as Cancellation and Curtailment cover which is calculated at 2.5% of the charter fee for the unforeseen cancellation of a charter, and can prove a worthwhile investment as well as providing peace of mind.

You should check with your broker about the level of insurance built into your charter contract before signing.

Other taxes

Local taxes may also apply in certain countries, therefore it is important to speak with your yacht charter broker to clarify what additional taxes are applicable to your chosen destination and itinerary.

Whilst the payment structure can vary depending on the contract, in general charter payments are made as follows;

  • 50% of the charter fee is payable upon signing the charter agreement, which confirms the booking.
  • The remaining 50% of the charter fee, APA (usually between 25-30% of the base charter fee), delivery and/or re-delivery fees, applicable taxes, plus any additional agreed amounts are payable one month prior to commencement of the yacht charter.
  • Any balance of monies due are to be paid on the first working day prior to completion of the yacht charter.

For further clarification of the payment structure for your yacht charter, please speak with your broker.

The port side of a superyacht in a marina at sunset

The base charter fee for a yacht can differ for a number of reasons, including;

  • Size and age of the yacht
  • High/low seasons, and major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix

There will also be additional amounts to pay on top of the yacht's base charter fee, which can include;

  • Advanced Provisioning Allowance (roughly 25-30% of the yacht's base fee and includes all charter expenditure such as food, fuel and marina fees)
  • Additional insurance, such as Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance
  • VAT and other taxes

It is important for you to understand the entire payment structure to ensure no unpleasant surprises arise whilst enjoying your vacation.

If you wish to know more about costs relating to your yacht charter, please speak with your preferred yacht broker for more information.

When to Charter: Seasons, Sailing Conditions

  • By Elaine Lembo
  • Updated: November 4, 2013

yachting charter season

As far as deciding when to go, again, much depends on personal circumstances and preferences. Not surprisingly, months designated as high season are usually the most desirable times to sail, not only for reasons of climate and weather in the charter area but also because of the weather back home.

In the Caribbean, for example, summer sailing is superb—the temperature doesn’t vary more than a few degrees from winter to summer. But most sailors want that dose of tropical sun, turquoise water, and balmy trades when the temperature at home is in the single digits and the boat’s laid up in the yard. For this reason, winter prices in the islands are higher than in the low season (summer) or fringe season (the period of time between high season and low season).

High, low, and fringe seasons vary according to locale, but if you’re on a tight budget, off-season or fringe-season sailing can save money; most companies offer substantial discounts or incentives in off-season months. In most areas, you can save from 10 percent to 60 percent.

The length and timing of the yacht charter season

Category: Yacht charters

The length and timing of the yacht charter season are influenced by several factors, primarily weather patterns and safety considerations. Here are the main reasons why charter seasons are often relatively short:

Weather Patterns :

  • Climate Conditions : Favorable weather conditions, such as mild temperatures, calm seas, and predictable winds, are crucial for a pleasant and safe sailing experience. For instance, the Mediterranean region experiences optimal sailing conditions from May to October, making this the primary charter season.
  • Avoiding Extreme Weather : In many regions, the charter season is planned to avoid periods of extreme weather. For example, the Caribbean has a shorter season due to the hurricane season from June to November. Similarly, the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia have monsoon seasons that affect charter availability.
  • Sea Conditions : Rough seas, high winds, and storms can make sailing dangerous. The charter season is scheduled during times when sea conditions are generally safer and more predictable.
  • Navigation and Mooring : Certain areas may have more difficult navigation conditions outside the peak season, with fewer daylight hours and less favorable mooring conditions.
  • Tourist Seasons : The yacht charter season often aligns with peak tourist seasons when people are more likely to take vacations. For example, the Mediterranean peaks in summer when most people in Europe have holidays.
  • Holiday Peaks : Winter charters peak around the Christmas and New Year holidays, as many people seek warm-weather destinations during this time.

Environmental Considerations :

  • Marine Life : In some regions, the charter season is planned to avoid disrupting marine life. For example, areas with significant whale migrations or breeding seasons might have restricted charter periods to protect the wildlife.

Economic Factors :

  • Operational Costs : Charter companies may find it more cost-effective to operate during peak seasons when demand is higher and reduce operations during off-peak times when demand is low.

Specific Examples:

  • Mediterranean : The summer season (May to October) avoids the cooler, stormier winter months, ensuring ideal conditions for sailing and tourism.
  • Caribbean : The charter season runs primarily from December to April, avoiding the hurricane season and aligning with the peak tourist season.
  • Southeast Asia : The charter season often avoids the monsoon periods, ensuring calmer seas and better weather conditions.

By aligning charter seasons with favorable weather conditions, charter companies can provide a safer, more enjoyable experience for their clients, and maintain the operational efficiency and sustainability of their fleets.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas are renowned for their crystal-clear waters and stunning beaches, making them a top destination for yacht charters. With over 700 islands to explore, you can find secluded spots for relaxation or lively areas for activities. Some highlights include remote sandbars and the colorful, historic settlements in the Abacos. The close proximity to the US and affordable direct flights from the mainland makes it an easily accessible paradise for North American travelers.

The British Virgin Islands

Known as a sailing paradise, the British Virgin Islands offer easy navigation, consistent trade winds, and numerous anchorages, perfect for both experienced sailors and novices. The pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and lively Caribbean culture create an idyllic setting for an unforgettable island-hopping experience. While the winter is considered the high season, BVI’s subtropical climate, moderated by trade winds, makes it an ideal sailing destination year-round.

Croatia’s Adriatic coastline is dotted with historic towns like Dubrovnik and Split, offering a mix of ancient history and modern amenities. The calm seas and numerous islands make it a great destination for beginners. Navigare Yachting’s bases in Dubrovnik and Trogir provide easy access to different parts of this beautiful region. A one-way charter with Navigare, made possible by our dual charter bases, is an incredible way to maximize your sailing itinerary and explore a larger part of the Dalmatian Coast.

Greece combines stunning scenery, ancient history, and vibrant culture, making it a fantastic yacht charter destination. Sail through the Aegean Sea to explore dramatic coastlines, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages. Whether you choose to explore the Cyclades or the Saronic Gulf, the Greek coastal landscapes won’t disappoint. Each of these destinations offers unique experiences, scenic beauty, and a variety of activities that make them ideal for a yacht charter vacation. Let’s dive into what makes each of these destinations great for island-hopping, along with some things to keep in mind to help you decide your perfect sailing getaway. Note that these are only a few hand-picked reasons that make these destinations stand out as excellent sailing locations, but it’s far from an exhaustive list.

What Makes It a Great Sailing Destination:

  • Clear, Turquoise Water and Beautiful Beaches: The Bahamas are renowned for their crystal-clear waters and stunning beaches, including some of the most photographed sand bars and beaches in the world.
  • Easily Accessible: Its close proximity to Florida, makes the Bahamas easily accessible for North American travelers. Flights are usually direct, inexpensive, and offered by almost all major North American airlines.
  • Variety of Islands: With over 700 islands, the Bahamas is an island-hopping paradise. From the colorful, historic villages in the Abacos to the remote natural wonders of the Exumas, there is no shortage of islands to explore.
  • Vibrant Marine Life: The Bahamas’ diverse marine life makes it an excellent destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. Marine explorers and vacationers have the opportunity to spot colorful fish, including clown fish, and other marine species such as conch, lobster, sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, barracudas, starfish, and a range of coral varieties.
  • Friendly Locals and Laid-Back Culture: The relaxed vibes, population of friendly locals, and laid-back Caribbean culture create the perfect setting for a stress-free getaway.
  • Rich History: North America may not boast as many historical sites as Europe, but the Bahamas stands out from the crowd as a surprisingly historical destination. From the world-famous Elbow Reef Lighthouse, the only still standing lighthouse in the world run with kerosene, to the family-owned sail shop in Man-O-War Cay reflecting the island’s boat-building heritage, Bahamas will easily satisfy any history-loving traveler.

Getaway Planning Notes:

  • The Bahamas can be crowded during peak season (Dec-March).
  • Far away for European travelers

  • A Sailing Paradise: Hands down one of the best sailing destinations in the world thanks to its ideal sailing conditions, low risk of extreme weather, and a subtropical climate that boasts warm temperatures year-round, the British Virgin Islands stands out as a sailing gem even next to its Caribbean neighbors.
  • Easy Navigation: Short distances between islands and protected waters make it ideal for beginner sailors. With consistent trade winds that keep the humidity low, a calm sea state, and overall predictable weather, the British Virgin Islands is a pleasant sailing destination that is well-suitable for both beginners and experienced sailors.
  • Natural Beauty: Pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and lush landscapes combine to create one of the most stunning Caribbean destinations.
  • Plenty of anchorages and mooring spots: Whether you are looking for a secluded anchorage to spend a few hours swimming and snorkeling or a mooring ball to enjoy dinner onshore, you won’t have any trouble finding it. The BVI is full of beautiful anchorages and there is no shortage of mooring places, which reflects the islands’ rich boating culture.
  • Vibrant Caribbean Culture: From vibrant carnivals and joyful festivals to the lively full moon parties at Trellis Bay, the people in the BVI know how to have fun! The BVI’s vibrant Caribbean culture is evident in the many celebrations throughout the year, such as Christmas in July and the Emancipation Festival, yet offers an easy-going and laid-back atmosphere ideal for a relaxing vacation.
  • Authentic Cuisine: Watch the sunset paint the sky in a vibrant display of colors as the Caribbean spices fill the air. Try a freshly caught lobster at one of the seaside restaurants in Anegada. Seafood, such as Caribbean conch fritters and the Catch of the Day are dishes commonly served at restaurants throughout the BVI, but it is also easy to find classics such as pizzas, burgers, salads, and steaks with a Caribbean touch.
  • World-Famous Destinations: The BVI offers some world-famous must-see attractions, like The Baths, a beach where impressive rock formations form a maze and tidewater pools, or the famous dive sites the RMS Rhone, the Indians, and the Caves. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay and try the original Painkiller drink.
  • The BVI can be crowded during the high season between December and March. During this time it can be challenging to find/reserve mooring balls.
  • There is more seasonal likelihood of adverse weather in the late summer and early fall.
  • Not as easily accessible as the Bahamas, but flights to the nearby USVI are affordable and the St. Thomas airport is only a short ferry ride away from the BVI.

  • Historic Coastal Towns: Croatia is so rich with history that no matter what town or island you visit, there will always be historical sites and museums to explore. Two of the most remarkable cities when it comes to history are the ancient cities of Split and Dubrovnik, whose history stretches back over a thousand years. The cities feature UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient buildings, old cobblestone streets, fascinating museums, and more.
  • Diverse Landscapes: Croatia's coastline is a breathtaking mix of diverse landscapes. Sail through the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by secluded coves, dramatic cliffs, and pristine beaches perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Venture inland and you’ll discover lush green hills, rolling vineyards, and picturesque villages.
  • Rich Culture: Croatian culture is a vibrant tapestry of Mediterranean, Central European, and Balkan influences, and this rich heritage is reflected in every aspect of life here. The local cuisine is a highlight, with fresh seafood, olive oil, and locally grown wines renowned worldwide. Traditional dishes like "peka" and "pašticada" offer a taste of the authentic flavors of the region. Croatian hospitality is another cornerstone of the culture—locals are known for their warmth and generosity, ensuring visitors feel welcome wherever they go.
  • Diverse Experiences: The contrast between the peaceful, remote islands and the bustling port cities like Split and Hvar makes Croatia a truly dynamic destination where different types of travelers can find exactly what they are looking for. Whether you're seeking a peaceful escape or vibrant nightlife, Croatia offers it all.
  • One-Way Charters: Since Navigare has two award-winning charter bases in Croatia, one in Trogir (Split) and the other one in Dubrovnik, we are able to offer charter guests the rare and incredible opportunity to charter one-way, meaning that you check in at one base and checkout at the other. With this setup, charter guests are able to explore a much larger portion of the Dalmatian Coast. Without the need to turn around and go back halfway through their trip, charter guests are able to visit almost twice as many islands during a one-way charter as they would on a traditional charter.
  • Some tourist locations in Croatia, and all around Europe, can be crowded during the summer. Finding a spot in the popular marinas can be more challenging during peak season.
  • The Med sailing season runs from late April through early November.

  • Ancient History: Greece is a paradise for history buffs, where every island you sail to has a tale rooted in ancient times. Imagine dropping anchor and stepping ashore in old coastal towns like Hydra where the absence of cars still makes donkey-drawn carriages one of the main means of transportation. The echoes of the past are everywhere, from the ruins of temples dedicated to gods of old to ancient theaters still standing proudly against the passage of time. Each destination offers a glimpse into a world that shaped Western civilization, making every stop on your journey a step back in time.
  • Stunning Scenery: Besides a rich history, Greece is also famous for its breathtaking landscapes where dramatic coastlines meet crystal-clear water. Picture yourself sailing past towering cliffs that plunge into the deep blue sea, or anchoring in a secluded bay surrounded by rugged mountains and olive groves. The Aegean Sea offers a variety of stunning backdrops, from the white-washed buildings in Mykonos to the lush green hills above Kyparissi.
  • Vibrant Culture: Greek culture is a lively blend of ancient traditions and modern hospitality, making every visit a rich and immersive experience. Whether you’re savoring a meal at a seaside taverna or joining in the festivities of a local festival, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. The Greeks are known for their friendliness towards visitors and this hospitality is evident in the warmth with which they approach people.
  • Delicious Cuisine: Greek cuisine is a true reflection of the country’s rich cultural heritage, with dishes that are as varied as they are flavorful. Imagine dining on fresh seafood grilled to perfection, or indulging in traditional dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and spanakopita. The Mediterranean diet, with its emphasis on fresh, local ingredients, is at its finest here. Don’t miss out on the chance to sample local delicacies like feta cheese, olives, and honey, all of which are integral to the Greek culinary experience. And of course, a meal in Greece isn’t complete without a glass of locally produced wine or a shot of ouzo to toast the day.
  • Diverse Experiences: Similar to Croatia, Greece offers a wealth of experiences that cater to every type of traveler, making it a versatile destination that can be as relaxing or as adventurous as you wish. Whether you’re exploring the lively nightlife of Mykonos, discovering hidden coves on the quieter islands of the Cyclades, or hiking through the rugged terrain of the Peloponnese, Greece has something for everyone.
  • Seasonal Meltemi winds in the Aegean can be challenging for beginner sailors.
  • Popular islands can be crowded during the summer months, which can make it difficult to find docking spots in the marinas.
  • Limited sailing season (May through October).

How Long is Yacht Charter Season in the Caribbean?

Image 0470:

Having a firm understanding of when the regional yacht charter seasons occur and how many months they last is beneficial for yacht owners and yacht management companies alike. You will have a better chance at anticipating the demand for your charter vessel and knowing which dates you can reserve for yacht maintenance or extended yard periods. Yacht crew placement and yacht concierge services are also aided by answering the question: how long is the Caribbean yacht charter season?

Caribbean Winter Cruising

The Caribbean yacht charter season starts around August and September and lasts throughout the autumn and winter months. Charter guests are seeking out the warmer weather and places like the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and plenty of other tropical paradises that provide the perfect escape.

Peak season in the Caribbean begins during mid-December and the winter holidays all the way to March. The months from April to July are considered the Caribbean’s shoulder season – the time between peak and non-peak times.

The Caribbean Yacht Charter Season

August, September, October, November, December, January, February, March

Hurricane season, which lasts from July to early October in this region, doesn’t hinder the Caribbean yacht charter season at all. However, yacht crew must stay aware of weather forecasts and charter prices are typically lower during these months.

Summer Season in “The Med”

The spring and summer months see a decrease in charters to the Caribbean. This is when the yacht charter season begins in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Charter guests and the jet-set elite go across the Atlantic Ocean to this region due to its temperate summer weather. However, not everyone goes east.

Sunshine & Warm Weather Year-Round

Since the Caribbean and even its neighboring places like the Florida Keys experience warm temperatures and moderate weather for almost all the months of the year, these destinations enjoy yacht charters year-round!

When you are developing your yacht’s charter schedule, be sure to reserve some dates for regular yacht maintenance services. At Yacht Management South Florida Inc., we offer premier yacht management and maintenance services on-site or on-location at our Fort Lauderdale marina. 'Below Deck' Shows A Piece Of Yacht Charter Season

yachting charter season

Even though most reality shows air over the course of several months, they usually film over a very small window, much shorter than the weeks it takes to air the footage. And on a show like Below Deck that takes place during a certain time frame, timing can be very important. So how long is a Below Deck charter season? Well, that depends. If you're thinking specifically of the season of Below Deck filmed for TV, the answer can be just a few weeks — the show tapes over a very short period and Eros charters may each last for about three days, according to Yacht Charter World. If you're speaking more generally about full charter seasons for yachts like the one shown on Below Deck , they can last for months at a time . Depending on where you are and where you want to go, the season starts at different times.

For example, Below Deck films in the Caribbean during the winter, in January — that's part of the regional charter season. That means that January is the prime time to travel in the Caribbean on a huge yacht. But even though Below Deck wraps up quickly, the cast could easily jump to a new gig once their TV commitments are complete, because the full Caribbean charter season is four to five months long. That is a long time to be stuck on boats in close working quarters, which is why Below Deck shows the crew taking breaks, having days off, and unwinding between charters. If not, they'd go insane. They're insane enough without having to work for months straight.

And because renting yachts is a worldwide phenomenon, there's no set time or set place where charters are always going on or come to a total stop. Within reason, everywhere that there's water, you can hire a boat to take you during some part of the year.

For the employees, they can choose to work as much or as little of each season as they like, picking their busy time of year depending on where, when, and how long they want to work.

yachting charter season

The time can also be different depending on where you are on the globe, from hot locations where November-April is the preferable season to travel, to the summer season, described by YCF as covering the Mediterranean and Europe, which picks up in May and lasts through October.

If you want to charter a yacht, you can do it at pretty much any time, you just might not encounter the Below Deck crew. To up your chances of meeting the reality TV cast, then heading down to the Bahamas early in the year is your best shot. And it will be lovely weather for a charter.

The Time of Year to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean:

The main Caribbean sailing season runs from November through to July. The Caribbean primary high season is from mid-December to March, when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare in the southern Caribbean. Unfortunately, they can be prevalent around Cuba, Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. every few years. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean and there are some really good deals are available. However, as well as running the risk of storms, this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter (or non-existent) winds.

As with many boating locations the Caribbean shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is also a great time to charter a boat as there are less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather, and warm yet steady breeze. The Caribbean is made up of many different multi-nation (and multi-cultural) volcanic islands. There are amazing sailing grounds stretching from Cuba and Jamaica in the west, through the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, The Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands, finishing with Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela.

Caribbean Yachting Hot Spots:

Here is a brief list of some of the Caribbean hot spots to consider experiencing when you rent a luxury crewed charter yacht. This is by no means an extensive list and there is more information on things to see and do in the Caribbean under each Caribbean private yacht location. Also, when you hire a yacht with us we will supply you with a customised hand written itinerary suggestion so that you and your crew have a few ideas to choose from on your charter.

General Places/Events Worthy of Experiencing:

- Gustavia Harbour in St Barts - shopping, nightlife, restaurants and European quintessence - Nelson in Dockyards in Antigua - history and beauty in a harbour - Sunset in St Lucia - St Kitts for the beauty, history and magnificent views from Brimstone Hill Fortress - Anegada for its deserted beaches, fringed reefs and the unique flora and fauna of the salt ponds, home to the pink flamingo - The BVIs for the beautiful beaches and anchorages - Guadeloupe for its diversity - one side offers cosmopolitan flair, bordered by beaches and coral reefs and the other has open lands with the fertile, volcanic peaks , rain forest and waterfalls.

How to get to the Caribbean

There are direct flights from the UK and the US to Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia and Antigua. Some Caribbean islands require a connecting flight as they have small airports which cannot handle large aeroplanes. Across the Caribbean, many islands have private jet facilities with fantastic runways.

Parsifal III: Meet the charter star of Below Deck's sailing yacht spin-off

This week, producers have confirmed season five of hit reality TV show Below Deck Sailing Yacht will return to screens on 7 October for more crew drama and on-the-water antics. Set on the Balearic island of Ibiza, the series will again feature the 54-metre Perini Navi superyacht Parsifal III with Captain Glenn Shephard at the helm. In anticipation of the series' return, BOAT reflects on an interview with her owner Kim Vibe-Petersen , who unpacked the realities of filming a reality TV series on board his boat ahead of season three.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is a spin-off series of the hit superyacht reality TV show Below Deck that follows the lives of the crew and guests across an eight-week charter season. For Danish owner Kim Vibe-Petersen, Parsifal III' s return is yet another opportunity to show off the yacht's charter credentials.

Vibe-Petersen was personally approached by Below Deck producers in 2018 after they struggled to find a suitable sailing yacht. Parsifal III fitted the bill as she was already equipped for charter and a number of her existing crew were willing to take part in the show.

The Perini Navi sailing yacht first hit the water in 2005 and rose to instant fame scoring a number of prestigious accolades including a coveted Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards . On her launch, she also joined the ranks as one of the fast Perini Navi superyachts on the water with a top speed of 18 knots under full sail granted by two high-tech carbon masts, automated in-boom furling and a winged keel.

Vibe-Petersen admitted there were some yacht owners who didn’t want the names of their yachts connected with the drama-filled reality show, but he "didn’t have that concern." Although he had the option to change the yacht’s name for filming, he decided to keep it to maximise the charter appeal of  Parsifal III .

"It’s free advertising," he said. "The name of the yacht will come to people’s minds, especially to someone who has never chartered a yacht before. They will see that name and know the boat from the show."

Vibe-Petersen was also keen to secure a guaranteed packed charter schedule during low season. "I think there were a lot of boats that did not want to be chartered for the show but it's good money in the bank," he said.

While admitting he might not be the "specific audience targeted by the series," he said he has sat down to watch the first series, which took place in Corfu. Even in Vibe-Peterson’s home country of Denmark, the US show has gained a big following.

"This is the kind of show where they want to make a little drama," he added. "It’s not that wild on board a normal charter." The conveyor belt of colourful guests are chosen by the production team and given a "big discount" for appearing on the show.

Vibe-Petersen also explained the complicated logistics of filming Below Deck , each season of which features 16 charters filmed across a period of eight weeks. This means that two groups of guests separately charter the yacht in a single week. Meanwhile, the production team require a time period of at least a week to get  Parsifal III  rigged up and fit for filming. "There are 30 people on board each day with lots of wires and cameras – it’s a big, big operation."

Season one was filmed in Corfu, Greece, which posed a number of challenges for  Parsifal III as the sailing yacht was required to have a specific charter licence. "It’s pretty tough to get that," said Vibe-Petersen. "It’s not something we can do within a short amount of time. It can take 10 to 12 weeks to get a charter licence so it takes time."

For her second season, Parsifal III was filmed cruising Croatia's 3,600 miles of coastline. For season three, the show follows Parsifal III as she cruises around the Spanish island of Menorca, carrying a mix of new and old crew.

Season five of Below Deck Sailing Yacht will feature returning department heads chief stew Daisy Kelliher and first mate Gary King, while chef Cloyce Martin, chief engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch are amongst the new crew members.

Parsifal III is managed for charter by Camper & Nicholsons with a weekly charter rate starting from €245,000.

The 11 Most Exciting Superyacht Debuts at the Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show always promises a stellar lineup— last year had an unusually large number of wild launches—and this time around will be no exception. More than 120 superyachts, including 20-plus that measure 200 feet and above, will be on the docks at Port Hercule, with beautiful Monte Carlo in the hills above.

Among the fleet of anticipated launches is the 400-foot Kismet . Built by Lürssen and launched earlier this year, this stunner will be shown before the winter charter season, at a weekly rate of $3.25 million. The vessel is sure to stand out, thanks to the large silver jaguar sculpture fitted under its bowsprit.

Besides bling, showgoers will notice the concerted push toward sustainability this year. Rossinavi has introduced the Seawolf X , its first hybrid-electric catamaran, and Nautor Swan’s sailing maxi yacht, DreamCatcher , is also its first hybrid. Sanlorenzo is launching Almax , its first 50-meter (165-foot) vessel with hydrogen fuel cells. It was developed with Siemens Energy.

Siemens is also sponsoring the show’s Sustainability Hub, which has become a breeding ground for eco-friendly concepts and new ideas to promote a greener superyacht sector. This year’s conference will cover alternative propulsion, outlining how it will be adopted over the next five years. The show’s Yacht Design & Innovation Hub takes a less technical approach to sustainability. It’s the place where leading designers and mainstream innovators converge, presenting vessels that will shape the future of superyacht design.

Here are 11 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Lürssen ‘Kismet’

The 400-foot Kismet is the most anticipated boat on display at Monaco this year. True to form, Shahid Khan’s third Lürssen, which charters for $3.25 million per week, will be an exceptional landmark in a marina of superyachts. Alongside its Nemo lounge for viewing marine life, a Balinese-inspired spa with the first chromotherapy bathtub on a yacht, and upper-deck dining options for 24 people, the vessel has a duplex owner’s apartment with two separate marbled bathrooms, a fireplace, and gilded wall coverings. When guests have had their fill of the DJ station and Bogányi piano, the ’80s retro matrix dance floor should keep the party going.

Royal Huisman ‘Special One’

Set to make a splash is Royal Huisman’s 171-foot Special One , the largest sportfisherman in the world. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and passionate fisherman, the monster sportfish is kitted out with a fighting chair, 22 fishing rods, insulated cooler boxes, and a dedicated bait-and-tackle room. The teak foredeck can transition into a sheltered private lounge area and also converts to an outdoor cinema. Designed by Vripack, the vessel offers up proportions and seakeeping capabilities that are matched by its impressive 30-knot top speed.

Rossinavi ‘Seawolf X’

Looming large above the water, the 140-foot Seawolf X is Rossinavi’s most ambitious build to date. The hybrid-electric catamaran is the Italian shipyard’s first multihull, which can stay in electric mode during transatlantic trips for 80 percent of the time. Even more impressive is the onboard artificial intelligence system—Rossinavi AI—which analyses the operation of the vessel, predicts the needs of guests and optimizes crew service and logistics. The interior is designed by New York-based Meyer Davis, with an exterior penned by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design. Its wow features include a cockpit centered around a pool, a second hidden pool on the bow area, and an outdoor cinema.

Bilgin ‘Eternal Spark’

Eternal Spark is the first hull in Bilgin’s 163 series. In addition to six outdoor and three indoor lounge areas, the yacht can host over 100 people while at anchor from its five dedicated bar areas. Hot Lab’s use of wood inlays and embossed natural leather create a refined interior aesthetic, while the combination of a huge beach club, sauna, pool, and two cinemas—outdoor and indoor—should keep guests happy. Built with over 200 different materials, it shows how advanced the Turkish yard has become with its last few launches.

Sanlorenzo ‘Almax’

Sanlorenzo’s first fuel-cell-powered 50Steel model joins a growing list of yacht launches exploring alternative power sources. The fuel-cell technology converts biomethanol (green methanol) into enough electricity to cover the hotel load so the yacht can anchor all night without generators. Almax also has Sanlorenzo’s newly patented Hidden Engine Room (HER), located on the lower deck. This novel configuration creates enough interior volume to include a 1,615-square-foot beach club with a pool and unfolding sea terraces, while keeping the yacht below 500GT. The shipyard has confirmed the sale of four units to date.

Custom Line50

Making its global debut a Monaco, the four-decked Custom Line50 is the Italian shipyard’s new flagship model. The dedicated owner’s apartment on the upper deck includes full-height windows, a full-beam suite, and a large private terrace. The sun deck’s lounge seating, cocktail bar, uninterrupted views, and glass-edged infinity pool amplify the sense of being on a floating island. It’s an effective design that is replicated on the main aft deck. This area offers stepped access to the sea, a scenario that is reinforced by an aquamarine-and-cream interior color scheme.

Damen ‘Five Oceans’

The newest model from Damen’s Yacht Support 53 range, Five Oceans was built for Tommy Allen, an entrepreneur committed to ocean exploration and marine conservation. The vessel will be easy to spot in Monaco’s Port Hercules, thanks to its powder-blue, orange, and white hull. The custom build is Allen’s second yacht-support vessel from Damen. It has a sprawling aft deck to carry toys and tenders as well as a 15-ton deck crane for the launch and recovery of the electric boats and Triton 3300 Pro submersible. Five Oceans also carries an Icon A5 amphibious aircraft.

Tankoa ‘Diamond Binta’

Conceived as a world explorer, Tankoa’s 190-foot Diamond Binta blends a hybrid propulsion package with high-gloss finishes over a wooden interior. Penned by Francesco Paszkowski, Tankoa’s long-time design collaborator, the full custom build has an owner’s suite with a fold-out balcony, a forward helideck for shore-based excursions, a large beach club with a spa, and massage room as well as a sundeck with a gym and pool. A corridor on the lower deck connects the yacht’s five guest cabins to the beach area, passing through a viewable engine room.

Nautor Swan ‘DreamCatcher’

As Nautor Swan’s first hybrid yacht, the 88-foot DreamCatcher is described by the shipyard as a “no-compromise cruiser with a racer’s soul.” Designed for guest comfort with a maximum heeling angle of 20 degrees, its exterior is penned by veteran Swan designer Germán Frers, while the light-wood interior with gray accents is done by Misa Poggi. The aft cockpit has a new coachroof design with an integrated sprayhood, bimini, and modular benches that can be used for both lounging and dining. The stern area incorporates a large beach club area and tender garage. On the foredeck is the “sunset lounge.”

Oceanco ‘H3’

Built in 2000 as 312-foot Al Mirqab for a member of the Qatari royal family, the renovated H3 emerged from Oceanco’s facilities in 2023 looking brand new, with an extra 476 gross tons of internal volume. The vessel’s 33-foot extension—to accommodate the owner’s request for an infinity pool with a convertible dance floor and waterfall—and a fully replaced superstructure were enough for Lloyd’s Register to classify the yacht as a new build. A spa on the lower deck has a hammam, a sensory shower, a hair salon, and treatment rooms. The beach club with its rippled mirror ceiling offers stepped access to the sea.

Conrad ‘Extra Time’

Extra Time , the second hull in Conrad’s C144 series, has an exterior by Reymond Langton Design and naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. The interior is by M2 Atelier. Much like its sistership Ace , Extra Time has a beach club, four guest lounge areas, a cinema, two bars and an infinity pool. Standout personal touches include an attention-grabbing King Kong  sculpture in the main salon and the main-deck owner’s suite that’s accessed via a private study with an electric piano.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5’s trailer has finally arrived, and with Captain Glenn Shephard’s crew including First Officer Gary King, fans are disappointed in the show’s return . While Below Deck viewers have been impatiently awaiting news about Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 for over a year, the trailer has finally been released, and has many concerned about what the season is going to look like. While the trailer reveals the return of some familiar faces, the storylines that appear to be part of the season left viewers feeling uneasy. After Gary’s sexual misconduct allegations, his involvement seems overwhelming.

In the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer, the crew’s chartering guests around Ibiza in a new sailing adventure. With Gary showing up early in the trailer after Daisy Kelliher makes her grand entrance, things get dicey quickly. “That’s right, we have a f****** job and I’m not carrying this f****** season on my own you f****** prick,” Daisy shouts at Gary in one moment of the trailer as he lays in his bed, looking dismayed. The rest of the trailer shows the genuine chaos of the season, featuring Gary heavily much to the surprise of Below Deck viewers .

What Gary’s Involvement In Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Means

He’s part of the show more than ever.

Throughout the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer, it was clear that Gary will be a focal point of the exterior team’s story. Being shown on the deck with some of the exterior team, pushing Deckhands to their limits and critiquing their work, Gary’s presence on the sailing yacht may be odd during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 . While he appears to be getting along with Daisy , he may not even have her in his corner by the end of the charter season. His heavy involvement in the trailer may not indicate the same throughout the whole season.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Although Gary has been a part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht since the early days of the series, seeing him as a member of the crew after his sexual misconduct allegations came to light is tough. While Bravo filmed Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 before the allegations were revealed, they came to light during the filming of the season and it appears that the network didn’t choose to remove Gary from later episodes or take action at all. Though it remains to be seen if production did anything about Gary , it’s disappointing to some to see him on screen.

Our Take On The Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Trailer

It could be chaotic fun, but gary leaves a stain on the show.

Although the trailer for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 makes it seem like one of the most exciting, dramatic seasons of the series we’ve ever seen, the mess may not be worth it if Gary’s involved. By ignoring the sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Gary and leaving him on the series, seemingly without explanation, Bravo is allowing it to seem like what he may have done is okay. Though nothing has been proven, taking no action on Below Deck Sailing Yacht could be a misstep that may taint the entire season of the sailing spin-off for once excited viewers.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
