Alberto Pinto

Superyacht interior designer Alberto Pinto did not come from a traditional design background. Born in Cassablanca to Argentine parents in 1945, he grew up amidst a variety of cultural influences and studied at the Ecole de Louvre in Paris before heading to New York to set up a photographic agency specialising in decoration and interior design. Drawing on this experience, he took up interior design using a variety of decoration styles from bold patterns and Baroque to space-age minimalism. Over four decades Alberto Pinto luxury interiors diversified from hotels, private residences and palaces into superyacht interior design and private jets. Since his death in 2012 aged 69, Alberto Pinto interior design has continued through his agency based in Paris which employs 60 staff and which is overseen by his sister and business partner, Linda Pinto.

Notable yachts

His first yacht project was created for a Gucci heir, and since then Alberto Pinto has applied his eclectic interior decoration styles to a variety of large luxury yachts. Alberto Pinto superyacht interiors include the iconic yacht Alfa Nero , 72-metre Dunya Yachts Axioma (ex- Red Square ) and Oceanco’s 85.6 metre St Princess Olga .

Specialisations

Aside from superyacht interior design, Pinto’s agency has created large-scale interior decoration and design projects for private residences, palaces, hotels, corporate clients and private jets. Pinto collections include plates, linen, and bespoke furniture. Alberto Pinto awards include World Superyacht Awards and a ShowBoats Design Award for Oceanco Alfa Nero .

Alberto Pinto’s lasting legacy

alberto pinto yacht design

Citizen of the world

Founder Alberto Pinto was born in Casablanca to Argentine parents and was surrounded by diverse cultures. Fluent in six languages, he drew his inspiration from the varied cultures he encountered at a tender age. His younger sister Linda was raised in the same environment, and absorbed the same values, culture, vision and sensitivity.

Leaving Morocco, Alberto attended the Ecole de Louvre in Paris and then moved to New York in 1970 to start a photography agency, which specialised in decoration and interior design. He returned to Paris to set up a gallery and launched his eponymous design house. He invited Linda, then just seventeen, to join him and put her in charge of his Parisian gallery. A short time later he asked her to join his interior design firm, where she quickly became his privileged associate. The siblings “had a very symbiotic relationship,” Linda explains. “We weren’t just brother and sister, we’d worked together for years.” Linda was by his side and with him at every step of the illness that later took his life.

Handed the reins of the design house, Linda Pinto has successfully perpetuated the elements and ethos that made the master’s success. At the time of her older brother’s death at the age of 69, she had already been working hand in hand with him for over three decades. Presiding over the activities of the eponymous House ever since, she not only kept the name alive but further developed the unique signature of Cabinet Pinto.

The agency has expanded its scope, developing furniture and accessories inspired by the style, sophistication and high level of quality that distinguishes all the Pinto projects. Home is the beautiful Hotel de la Victoire, a 17th century townhouse set in the heart of Paris. The team of 80 highly talented professionals work on projects in different areas: private homes, luxury hotels, offices, yachts, private and corporate jets, as well as in the marketing and distribution of pieces of furniture, linen and fine tableware, all created in-house.

There are no barriers between the different sectors of activity and all members work in symbiosis, in a busy creative and highly inspirational environment, favourable to the exchange of ideas, which has been the trademark of Cabinet Pinto’s creativity for a long time.

French flair

The projects that came out of the Paris office include several private aircraft. One is the famed G-NOAH, operated by Acropolis Aviation, one of Europe’s leading luxury air charter companies, based in Farnborough, UK. The 19-seat Airbus ACJ319 entered into service in 2010 and is available for private charter flights. The elegant interior is very popular with customers, who appreciate the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere created by a selection of furnishing, fabrics and fittings in a colour palette of warm beiges and creams. “Designed with understated French flair, the aircraft has the ambience of a private club and evokes a sense of well-being,” said Acropolis CEO Jonathan Bousfield.

Unsurprisingly Acropolis, the launch customer for the Airbus ACJ320neo, again selected Alberto Pinto to style the interior for the VIP narrow-body. “It was a natural choice for us,” revealed Bousfield. “Our current, versatile cabin caters for a diverse range of travellers, including heads of state, high net worth individuals, corporate and leisure clients. Choosing a design that reflects an evolution of our highly popular cabin will help us remain market leading.”

The first renderings show optimum use of the aircraft’s spacious and cutting edge cabin. The project is the responsibility of Yves Pickardt, who also styled G-NOAH. The new aircraft will have 19 seats, a private master bedroom with luxury en-suite, and a larger galley fitted out like a real kitchen to cater for clients’ wishes. “We continue to receive positive feedback from clients flying G-NOAH. The care and attention taken on designing this exceptional and ergonomic cabin means it is as stylish today as it was in 2010 and this is the reason we re-engaged Alberto Pinto Design,” said Bousfield. The aircraft is being completed at AMAC. The completion centre based in Basel, Switzerland, is renowned for its expertise and much respected by designers worldwide. A 10-year strong relationship has been established with Cabinet Pinto, based on confidence and mutual respect.

Luxury apartment in the sky

When Boeing had a competition among the top designers in the field to design the new Boeing Business Jet, BBJ MAX 7, the design proposal of Cabinet Alberto Pinto won out. The company’s vision of flying on a BBJ MAX 7 is a perfect balance of modernity and comfort.

The layout is designed to accommodate up to 19 passengers and two crewmembers. It includes a large entrance hall, a large galley, a central corridor, a guest lavatory, a forward lounge, dining area, and aft lounge, as well as a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, shower, vanity, and storage cabinets.

The custom seats designed for the lounge area follow the soft lines and curves that characterise the design of the rest of the aircraft. They were inspired by eggshells and feature integrated loudspeakers in the headrest. The sofa in the aft-lounge can be converted to a berth for added sleep comfort of guests on-board.

The double bed in the master bedroom is angled to make the most of the space available and faces a large flat-screen television. Pinto also included specifications for a large-OLED wallpaper screen to display in-flight entertainment in the dining area, with individual TV monitors in other zones, as well as custom-themed music, creating ambiance while boarding the aircraft, and specialised dimmable lighting.

“This is not just a flying home or a flying office anymore. This is not just a travel experience,” Pinto said. “Our design is all about elegant and sensuous curves, versatile lighting and modern materials such as carbon fibre, with a strong presence of luxury craft quality standards.” Boeing expects that the 7,000 nautical miles range BBJ MAX 7 will prove very popular with wealthy individuals who travel often and for long distances with family and business partners, but want to avoid the hassle of flying commercial.

A designer’s dream come true

The team is used to is working on large cabin projects, but had a baptism of fire having started with the concept for the cabin interior of a Boeing BBJ 747-8 airplane. The first private BBJ 747-8 to come out of completion on time and within budget, it was also the first ‘jumbo’ the Parisian House ever had to design. The aircraft was completed at AMAC and re-delivered to its happy owner in 2015.

The Boeing BBJ 747-8 is the largest private aircraft designed for an undisclosed customer. It was a “designer’s dream come true,” according to Pickardt who was in charge of the project. “The owner gave us carte blanche . He wasn’t looking for anything outrageously luxurious, with gold and diamonds. On the contrary he called for some simplicity, which in the end is indeed the true luxury.”

A global traveller, the owner only mentioned that he wanted an aircraft like a family home.

“We decided to go with a soft modern style, which is somehow quite classical,” continues Pickardt. “One can easily recognise a strong French touch, a tribute to French Art deco and to our most famous saddle makers. We used only noble materials, all of the best quality available of course, such as wood, (African Wakapou and Sycamore), stone, wool and silk fabrics, natural leathers.”

The sheer dimensions of the aircraft offer a floor surface that gives a designer the possibility of limitless layouts proposals.

“Getting to design a 420-square metre aircraft interior lets you into a very small club of interior designers,” adds Pickardt. “Only a handful of fewer than eight specialists worldwide have had the privilege to design such aircraft.”

Less than 10 private aircraft of that size are currently flying. No house or yacht can even get close to the final cost of a private BBJ 747-8.

“Such a project is a dream come true that happens only once or twice in a designer’s lifetime. In a way, this is a landmark in aviation history,” adds Pickardt. “Officials from the Boeing Company who visited the aircraft said that it may be one of the most beautiful large aircraft ever made!”

HISTORICAL HOME REIMAGINED

interview with linda pinto on the interior design of luxury yachts

alberto pinto interior design has become synonymous with eclecticism, refinement and a distinctly opulent style, with projects for prestigious clients ranging from private residences, offices, hotels, yachts and jets. drawing from a variety of cultural influences he developed since childhood, alberto initiated the brand in the early 1970s, building his work around the intermingling of cultures, and the quest for the exceptional.

following his passing in 2012, alberto’s sister linda pinto took over the management of the studio, having worked closely alongside side him for decades. today, linda and her team of 80 employees working in paris have become the go-to name for the design of luxurious interiors across a range of public and private spaces — notably yachts and jets. the studio has designed the interiors for 10 of the 100 largest yachts in the world, each appropriating the eclectic taste of an international clientele, with a decor marked by the careful balance between elegance and opulence.

while in paris, designboom spoke with linda pinto about the themes that inform the  alberto pinto interior design process, the new standard for luxurious design, and her prediction for the future of yacht interiors.

designboom (DB): what would you describe as the new standard for luxurious yacht design?

linda pinto (LP):  dimension is the new standard, with mega yachts measuring at 80 square meters for a ‘wow’ effect. dimension is the greatest difference between custom designed boats and standard series designed boats. today, there is a great demand for more space inside for a spa area, more exterior space, and flexibility. for example, outside walls that can open and transform to outdoor terraces, and even hulls that light up. the requests are for more and more luxurious amenities on board too: jet skis, slides, larger sailboats, and more.

DB: when a client gives you creative freedom, what other industries or motifs influence your design process?

LP: even with creative freedom, dialogue with a client is a necessary part of the design. in our process, we love to keep in mind that designing for a yacht is an extension of a beach club ambiance. we are always sourcing new materials with modern fixtures and appliances which yield innovative results with ‘haute couture’ design details. alberto pinto interior design always strives to offer something new.

DB: what are the most challenging stages in planning the interior scheme of a private yacht environment?

LP: the most challenging aspect of planning a yacht’s interior is to keep harmony throughout the décor, while adapting to the technical constraints of security exits, fire detectors, emergency lighting, and more. these factors depend on the size of the vessel. with those challenges also comes opportunities. for example, alberto pinto interior design was the first design firm to sacrifice part of a yacht’s deck in order to make a majestic two-floor living room.

DB: what are some of the most unique, exciting, or even strange requests that a client has asked you to incorporate into a design?

LP: a few examples: a client requested that the yacht’s observation room have a glass floor so they could see the ocean. such a room, with a glass floor, is very difficult to execute. another client requested a giant aquarium for the interior of the yacht. first, we had to find a suitable way to install the aquarium due to its weight, and second, the fish became ‘sea sick’ upon the first voyage. in the end, it was a success. a different client requested a billiard room that we had to custom design in order to function with the movement of the yacht. these examples make requests such as a chimney quite reasonable!

DB: in what ways does the thinking behind yacht interior design differ, or relate to, the ideation of a corporate, or hospitality venue?

LP: this is subjective to how a client prefers to receive their guests.

DB: what are the most important things to take into consideration when designing a yacht for personal use?

LP: foremost, the client’s lifestyle; how they will use it for their family, entertainment, exploration around the world, island hopping, and more. then, we discuss their priorities on board which could be a hair salon, movie theater, office, or conference room. these are the most important questions to ask during a client’s first briefing with us so that we understand their way of life.

DB: what advice would you give to young designers who are interested in entering the interior design industry?

LP: to begin by interning is a good way to enter the field for young designers. the world of custom yachts is an unbelievable and extraordinary universe that is very specialized.

DB: what do you see as the latest trends in interior yacht design, and where do you envision the field headed in coming years?

LP: I expect to see more dynamic boats than classic ones. design that is more modern with varying materials and details.

DB: can you tell us about any exciting new projects that you are currently working on?

LP: one project is for a client with very specific taste for their 158m yacht. then we have two exploring type vessels that will be used for traveling along the high seas during inclement weather. design wise, these clients have instructed us they would like to be surprised but still want the décor to be discreet.

He is known for his classical design choices and creates opulent layouts for his clients, all custom-made.

Although the exact details of the interior of QUANTUM BLUE are not known, it is assumed that the yacht looks similar to Pinto’s previous projects with a modern twist on traditional yacht interiors.

The vessel can accommodate fourteen guests in seven spacious cabins as well as eighteen crew members, which is not a large team considering QUANTUM BLUE is more than 100 meters long.

She has a spa, a gym, a cinema room, and a beautiful beach club on board, as well as separate crew and guest elevators.

Specifications

The impressive QUANTUM BLUE yacht is 104 meters (341.2 ft) long with a 16.8 meter (55.1 ft) beam and a 4.1 meter (13.5 ft) draft.

Her total weight lies at 4,341 tons, and she is powered by twin diesel MTU engines.

Her average cruising speed is 13 knots, but if needed, she can reach top speeds of 22 knots.

She features high-quality at-anchor stabilizers which ensure optimal comfort levels for her guests even during rough seas.

Tim Heywood Design Studio developed the elegant exterior of the QUANTUM BLUE yacht. The award-winning designer has worked on high-profile projects such as DILBAR in the past and is well-respected in the world of superyachts.

QUANTUM BLUE is all-white with four decks, all equipped with comfortable seating areas for guests.

A spacious beach club opens up onto the swimming platform aft of the vessel, allowing direct water access.

The yacht is equipped with a modern underwater lighting system and a large aluminum superstructure.

At the bow, a helipad enables the owner of QUANTUM BLUE to arrive and depart in style. Her top deck features a large jacuzzi providing exceptional views of the surrounding ocean.

The QUANTUM BLUE yacht was built for a price of US $250 million and incurs annual running costs between US $15 and 25 million. The yacht is currently not available for charter or for sale.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht

PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down.

Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.

Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.

“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said.

It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said.

Divers Retrieve Bodies From Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch Yacht Sunk Off Sicily

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.

Divers searching for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off Sicily in a storm have found fifth bodies.

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.

All the men missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily -- who included UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch -- have been found, a coastguard official told.

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

What We Know So Far About the Missing Victims in the Sicily Yacht Sinking

Four British passengers and two Americans, including a prominent New York City attorney and his wife, remain missing after the Aug. 19 yacht sinking

First responders are still looking for six people who remain unaccounted for one day after the superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily following a major storm.

Among those unaccounted for include four British passengers and two Americans,  CNN ,  The Independent  and  Sky News reported .

Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy were aboard the 183-foot yacht when the vessel, carrying 22 people, began taking on water during the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 19.

London-based insurance company Hiscox — of which the 70-year-old Bloomer is also chairman — issued a statement to PEOPLE on Aug. 20 regarding the tragedy.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation," Chief Executive Aki Hussain said

Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, are also missing following the incident. Hannah's school in west London said in a statement, per The Guardian , that they were "all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.”

A source close to the survivors tells PEOPLE that the group was "celebrating Lynch's acquittal" following a lengthy legal saga that dated back to the 2011 sale of Autonomy, a business software company Lynch founded, to Hewlett Packard.

The man known as the "British Bill Gates" had been mired in legal issues since 2018, when he was indicted on several counts of securities fraud and conspiracy by federal prosecutors in California.

The trial didn’t begin until earlier this year, the BBC reported, because Lynch fought extradition to the United States for years following his indictment.

Lynch, who was facing 15 felony charges, was acquitted on all counts in June, the outlets reported.

New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo — who was on board the yacht with his wife Neda — was among those who worked on the case.

In a post on LinkedIn penned in June , the lawyer wrote that usually he didn't share personal wins on social media.

"I have never posted on LinkedIn before. Not sure why," Morvillo wrote. "The answer must lie somewhere between a fear of social media, an ignorance of the mysteries of this platform, and a lack of something meaningful to say. But, following the jury's swift exoneration of our client, Mike Lynch, and his colleague, Steven Chamberlain, last week in San Francisco, I finally have something to say that I would like others to hear."

Previous to his work at Clifford Chance, Morvillo was an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York who worked on the criminal investigation arising out of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, according to his biography on the Clifford Chance website .

Neda is a New York City jewelry designer who has been making hand-crafted pieces for over 20 years, according to her company’s website .

Chris and Neda are the parents of two daughters, Sabrina and Sophia.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of 15 people saved out of a total of 22 who were originally aboard the  Bayesian , the Italian coast guard and local sources said. Eight of the rescued were taken to local hospitals.

The body of the yacht's chef, identified by Reuters as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas, was found near the vessel on Aug. 19.

Thomas was an inspiration to young Black children who wanted to get into the yachting world, his friend Eli Fuller told the BBC .

"The kids would see all these white people working on yachts," Fuller added. "For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."

Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.
