Who Owns the World’s Most Expensive Yacht?

The world of luxury yachts is a fascinating place, where the rich and the famous indulge in their love for opulence and extravagance. Among the many extravagant vessels that sail the world’s oceans, one yacht stands out for its sheer scale and cost – the Azzam.

The Azzam: A Superyacht like No Other

Built by the German shipyard Lloyd Werft, the Azzam is a 590-foot (180-meter) long super yacht that was launched in 2013. It is owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan , the President of the United Arab Emirates and a member of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi.

The Azzam’s Features

The Azzam is a behemoth of a yacht, with a beam of 71 feet (22 meters) and a draft of 23 feet (7 meters). It is equipped with a range of impressive features, including:

  • Six decks , each with its own unique theme and décor
  • A helipad for convenient air transport
  • A missile defense system for added security
  • A private beach on the upper deck for sunbathing and relaxation
  • A swimming pool that doubles as a dance floor at night

The Azzam’s Cost

So, what did it cost to build this magnificent yacht? Estimates put the price tag at around $640 million ($850 million), making it one of the most expensive yachts ever built. To put that number into perspective, the Azzam is worth more than the entire world’s supply of Milk , according to some sources.

Other Contenders

While the Azzam holds the record for the most expensive yacht in the world, there are other contenders worth mentioning:

  • The Dubai , owned by the ruling family of Dubai, is a 452-foot (138-meter) long yacht that was launched in 2012.
  • The Eclipse , owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, is a 536-foot (164-meter) long yacht that was launched in 2010.
  • The Rising Sun , owned by Steve Wynn, the CEO of Las Vegas Sands, is a 453-foot (138-meter) long yacht that was launched in 2004.

Table: A Comparison of the World’s Most Expensive Yachts

Dubai 452 2012 Ruling family of Dubai
Eclipse 536 2010 Roman Abramovich
Rising Sun 453 2004 Steve Wynn

The Azzam is a truly remarkable vessel, with its sheer size and scale making it a marvel of engineering and design. While it is undeniable that the cost of owning such a yacht is prohibitively expensive for most people, it is nonetheless a testament to the incredible wealth and extravagance of the world’s elite. Whether you’re a superyacht enthusiast or simply interested in the world of luxury yachting, the Azzam is an incredible vessel that commands attention and respect.

Everything We Know About the Final Moments of the Passengers Who Died in the Sicily Yacht Tragedy

Five of the seven victims had been "searching for air pockets" as the luxury yacht sank on Aug. 19, authorities said

The luxury yacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, resulted in the deaths of six passengers and one crew member.

Less than a week later, on Saturday, Aug. 24, Ambrogio Cartosio, the Chief Prosecutor of Termini Imerese, announced that Italian authorities were launching a manslaughter investigation into the sinking , and he identified all of the victims.

The seven victims who died in the tragic sinking were yacht chef Recaldo Thomas; British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda ; and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy .

As authorities attempt to answer questions about what exactly led to the sinking of the 183-foot British-flagged vessel — which went down during a "violent storm,” the Italian Coast Guard previously told PEOPLE in a statement — here is what we currently know about the victims’ final moments.

FAMILY HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock

During the Aug. 24 press conference, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra, head of the Palermo Fire Brigade, revealed that as the Bayesian began going down early Monday morning, “It was quite clear that people were trying to hide in the cabins.”

“In the left-hand side, we found the first 5 bodies in the left-hand side cabins, and the final body on the right-hand side,” Fiandra said. “We found them on the highest part of the ship, which was closer to the surface. The vessel had three cabins on each side.”

The five victims, who "took refuge” on the luxury yacht’s left side, had been "searching for air pockets" in a final attempt at survival," he added.

As for why the victims were in the cabins in the first place, Giovanni Costantino — who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian back in 2008 — told CNN it was due to a “very long sum of errors."

"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors,” he said in his interview, translated from Italian. “The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?”

Prior to the storm and subsequent sinking, some of the luxury yacht’s passengers were in celebration mode. They had been commemorating the recent acquittal of one of the victims, Lynch, 59, a source close to the survivors previously told PEOPLE.

Two months ago, Lynch was acquitted on all counts of a series of fraud and conspiracy charges he faced in the U.S. after a years-long legal battle dating back to 2018.

He celebrated the acquittal on the Bayesian with his daughter and his wife, Angela Bacare, who was rescued along with 14 others on board.

Also celebrating were Morvillo, 59, who represented Lynch in the case, and Bloomer, 70, who was a close friend of the tech entrepreneur.

Mike Lynch’s Body Is Found After Sicily Yacht Sinking, Official Says

The authorities have recovered the bodies of all but one of the six people missing after disaster struck a yacht carrying the British software tycoon.

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

The body of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was among those recovered by Italian divers, an official in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, said on Thursday, confirming that he was killed when a violent storm struck his yacht this week.

Of the 22 people on board the yacht, which had anchored off the Sicilian coast early Monday, when it sank, nine crew members and six passengers survived.

As of Thursday afternoon, Italian recovery teams had retrieved the bodies of the one remaining crew member and five passengers who had been on the yacht, which now lies in 165 feet of water near the port of Porticello, and were searching for one more passenger.

The death of Mr. Lynch was confirmed by Massimo Mariani, the prefect of Palermo, who said that the remaining missing person was the technology entrepreneur’s daughter Hannah.

The others victims were Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

“This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder,” the Bloomer family said in a statement. “Our parents were incredible people.”

The Morvillo family said it was “completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda,” and added, “Their passing is a tremendous loss.”

The yacht was caught in a sudden downpour. Weather experts said that strong winds and lightning had hit the area and that the yacht had most likely been struck by air generated within a thunderstorm descending rapidly or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Rescue teams involving deep sea divers with the Italian firefighters’ corps, coordinated by the coast guard, as well as helicopters and rescue ships, had worked to reach the hull of the ship, which had settled on its side on the sea floor.

Carlo Dall’Oppio, the national head of Italy’s firefighters, said on Thursday that the boat was tilted by 90 degrees on the sea bottom. He said the bodies had been found “in the cabins,” although it remained unclear if they were all found in the same one.

The rescue teams recovered four bodies on Wednesday and one on Thursday, bringing them ashore in body bags in front of a crowd of reporters and onlookers.

The priority remained “the recovery of the missing body,” said Mr. Mariani. Once that search is completed, the judicial authorities would decide the next steps, he said.

The bodies recovered so far were already at the disposal of prosecutors, he said, “and then there is the investigative phase,” which would include the recovery of the yacht.

The Italian prosecutors handling the case have attracted strong criticism from the local press association because of their reluctance to share any information with reporters.

As of Thursday, they had not held a news conference or released a statement on the investigation, generating what the Sicilian press association called “a black market of news” that made it hard to verify information.

Finally, on Thursday afternoon, Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor handling the case, said that a news conference would be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the town of Termini Imerese, the location of his office.

Mr. Mariani said the operations to recover the bodies had gone quickly, taking into account that the divers had a limited amount of time — about 12 minutes — to operate before coming up.

“It was complicated and also potentially dangerous for the divers,” he said, because of the size of the yacht. “There are objective difficulties; thankfully, they are well trained and know what they are doing.”

Inside Azzam: The Incredible Superyacht

' src=

A yacht is arguably one of man’s most beautiful creations to grace the ocean and seas. They are not only gigantic but luxurious, durable, timeless, and innovative in design. One yacht stands out and embodies both luxury and class; Azzam Superyacht.

Not only do superyachts provide individuals with an ability to experience the world’s oceans unlike any other vessel, they are also a reflection of what’s possible when innovation meets design. From engineering to construction, it’s no wonder superyachts are revered for their beauty and immense capabilities. Yachts which are as long as 78 feet are said to be superyachts, and Azzam fits perfectly in such a class.

Azzam Superyacht is currently the largest yacht in the world . Its size is gigantic to the point that the paint used to cover its exterior can be used on 38,000 cars. It was launched in April 2013 by Lürssen Yachts, thereby displacing the previous record-holder Eclipse (which is owned by the Russian billionaire and Chelsea football club owner, Roman Abramovich) as the largest yacht in the world.

Specifications of Azzam Superyacht

This phenomenal Superyacht took a whopping four years to build , involving the efforts and professionalism of the world’s most experienced. Azzam’s yacht design is considered a massive achievement as it was both complex and challenging to execute, with such finesse and excellence.

The strenuous construction and humongous human resources needed to build this 590-feet-long superyacht has resulted in the creation of one of the world’s finest superyacht.

However, the goal wasn’t to build the biggest yacht in the world but rather to combine luxury, comfort, balance, elegance, and functionality in one masterpiece.

Luxury & Interior

superyacht

While the exterior of a yacht may appeal to some, the most elegant features lie in its interior. Christophe Leoni designed Azzam’s interior and modelled it after a relaxed French Empire style. With this masterpiece, Azzam “eclipsed the Eclipse” in style, luxury, and prowess.

This incredible Superyacht boasts approximately 50 suites, can accommodate 36 guests, and needs a crew of 60 people. Its exquisite complexity and class are unique and astonishing. Each cabin is laden with a certain feel of royalty, style, and comfort.

Engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbadi supervised Azzam’s technical engineering. What’s more, the superyacht was developed by Lürssen and had its exterior completed by Nauta Yacht. What’s more, Azzam boasts a top speed of 31.5knots, which is achieved thanks to her innovative water-jet propulsion system. This yacht also has a missile defense system!

In conclusion

The Azzam sits at an estimated US $600M in value, which is about $100million more than Eclipse. This isn’t surprising when you consider its ground breaking technology and the immense value it offers. Indeed, three years of building and one year of engineering didn’t go to waste. Azzam is unparalleled, and its elegance is unlike anything else!

However, some yachts are more impressive than others, and one of the most impressive is the biggest yacht in the world, the Azzam. This article will provide an overview of the Azzam and its significance in the world of yachting.

Biggest yacht in the world

The biggest yacht in the world represents the ultimate in luxury, size, and power. It is a feat of engineering and design, as well as a status symbol for the owner. Owning the biggest yacht in the world is a testament to one’s wealth, power, and influence, and it is a way to show off to the world.

The purpose of this article is to provide readers with an in-depth look at the biggest yacht in the world, the Azzam. The article is intended to inform and educate readers about the biggest yacht in the world and its significance in the world of luxury yachting.

      The Design of the Azzam

Overview of the yacht’s design: The Azzam was designed by Nauta Yachts and built by Lurssen Yachts. The yacht is 180.61 meters (592 feet) long, and its design is sleek and modern. The exterior of the yacht is simple and elegant, with a white hull and a black superstructure. The yacht has a shallow draft, which allows it to navigate shallow waters and access ports that are inaccessible to other large yachts.

      Interior and exterior features

The interior of the Azzam is just as impressive as its exterior. The yacht has a spacious interior with a modern and luxurious design. The main salon is located on the main deck and is decorated in a contemporary style with neutral colors and high-quality finishes. The salon is flanked by two large seating areas, a bar, and a dining area that can seat up to 60 guests.

The yacht has eight decks and can accommodate up to 36 guests in 18 cabins, including a master suite and six VIP suites. The master suite is located on the upper deck and features a private terrace, an office, and a lounge area. The VIP suites are located on the main deck and are decorated in a luxurious and contemporary style. The yacht also has accommodation for up to 92 crew members.

      Amenities and facilities

The Azzam is equipped with a range of amenities and facilities, including a helipad, a gym, a spa, and a swimming pool. The helipad is located on the foredeck and can accommodate a helicopter up to 12 meters in length. The gym is located on the lower deck and features state-of-the-art equipment. The spa is located on the lower deck and features a sauna, a steam room, and a massage room. The swimming pool is located on the main deck and is one of the largest on any yacht, measuring 29 meters (95 feet) in length.

In addition to these amenities, the Azzam also has a range of water toys and equipment, including jet skis , water skis, and scuba diving equipment. The yacht is also equipped with the latest navigation and communication systems, ensuring that guests can stay connected and safe at all times. Overall, the Azzam is a masterpiece of engineering and design, and its amenities and facilities make it one of the most luxurious yachts in the world.

      The Cost of the Azzam

Estimated cost of construction: The exact cost of the Azzam’s construction is not publicly known, but it is estimated to be around $600 million. This makes the Azzam one of the most expensive yachts ever built. The yacht was commissioned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan , the President of the United Arab Emirates, and was built by Lurssen Yachts in Germany.

      Maintenance and operating costs

The cost of maintaining and operating the Azzam is also significant. The yacht requires a large crew to operate and maintain it, which can cost millions of dollars per year. In addition, the yacht requires regular maintenance and upgrades to keep it in top condition, which can also be expensive. The fuel costs for the yacht can be around $500,000 per year, and the overall operating costs can be around $60 million per year.

      Comparison with other yachts

The Azzam is one of the largest and most expensive yachts ever built, but it is not the only one of its kind. There are many other large and luxurious yachts in the world, and some of them cost even more than the Azzam. For example, the Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich, is slightly smaller than the Azzam but is estimated to have cost around $1.5 billion to build. The Dilbar, owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, is slightly larger than the Azzam and is estimated to have cost around $650 million to build.

10 Facts about Azzam yacht

Azzam was never intended to be the world’s largest superyacht

The design was intended to be fast and to handle a specific interior layout and number of visitors, but it was initially planned to be 145 meters long overall. The design extended another 35 metres to become a recordbreaker as the necessity to optimize the structure and create space for complicated engine systems, fuel, and tenders evolved, along with an exquisite exterior displaying a long, sweeping bow and swept back stern.

It required around 4,000 people to construct

Rightly considered of as a gigayacht, Azzam took four years to build at German shipyard Lürssen and is reported to have cost more than US$500m. During four years, 4,000 workers worked on the project, accumulating six million man-hours before her April 2013 debut. The builders concluded that if the yacht had been built by a single person, construction would have had to begin in 1737BC.

Azzam is one of the fastest superyachts in the world

Azzam was designed to travel as quickly as possible to the owner’s own island off the coast of Abu Dhabi , and she can do so in a matter of hours at her top speed of 33 knots.

Azzam is as swift as a Naval frigate and employs comparable technology

Two gas turbine engines and two MTU diesel engines drive two Wartsila axial flow Modular waterjets and two boosters to achieve top speed. At full speed, they create 97,000hp and burn 13 tons of fuel every hour.

There are two modes: long range and sprint.

Azzam also includes two conventional diesel engines for enhanced range and longer distance travel. Over long distances, two 9,000kW MTU engines produce a speed of 18 knots; she could readily cover the Atlantic without refueling.

You can play golf on board

Visitors can stay fit by visiting the onboard gym, pool, or golf training room.

More than 100 individuals can reside on board

Azzam can host up to 36 guests in utmost comfort, while a workforce of 70 to 80 workers looks after them.

There is a massive open-plan main saloon

The vast open plan main saloon measures 29 metres long by 18 metres and is surrounded by full height windows for an expansive outlook outside. “It was quite a challenge to create this space without pillars,” Mario Pedol observes, adding that the beams on the ceiling had to be 1 metre wide. To ensure that the massive windows were totally stormproof, the glass had to be custom designed in Italy and is more than 7cm thick.

The inside is rich with mother of pearl

The furniture on board has elaborate marquetry in mother of pearl, which is worth a year’s worth of global output.

The chandelier does not jangle.

A lot of effort was put into making Azzam’s noise and vibration levels as low as possible, even at full speed. Designers and engineers had to make certain that the chandelier in the main salon did not jingle while in operation.

Other Large Yachts

There are many other large and luxurious yachts in the world, and some of them are comparable in size and amenities to the Azzam. Some of the notable large yachts include:

Owned by Roman Abramovich, the Eclipse is 162.5 meters (533 feet) long and is the second-largest yacht in the world. The yacht features two swimming pools, a cinema, a gym, and a spa.

The Dubai is 162 meters (531 feet) long and is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. The yacht features a helipad, a swimming pool, a cinema, and a disco.

Owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, the Dilbar is 156 meters (511 feet) long and features a helipad, a swimming pool, a spa, and a cinema.

Comparison with the Azzam

While these yachts are comparable in size to the Azzam, there are some differences in their amenities and features. For example, the Eclipse has two swimming pools, while the Azzam has one. The Dubai has a disco, which the Azzam does not have. The Dilbar has a spa, which is also a feature of the Azzam.

Notable features of other yachts

In addition to their size, these yachts also have some notable features. The Eclipse has a missile defense system and an anti-paparazzi shield, which makes it one of the most secure yachts in the world. The Dubai has a mosaic swimming pool and a hand-carved wooden staircase, which add to its luxurious design. The Dilbar has a diesel-electric power plant, which makes it one of the most environmentally friendly yachts in the world.

In conclusion, the Azzam is currently the largest yacht in the world, and its size and design are truly impressive. However, there are many other large and luxurious yachts in the world, and some of them are comparable in size and amenities to the Azzam. The Eclipse, Dubai, and Dilbar are just a few examples of other yachts that are highly sought after by the world’s wealthiest individuals.

While the cost of building, operating, and maintaining these yachts is significant, they are seen as a status symbol by many. For those who can afford it, owning a large yacht is a way to showcase their wealth and success.

Iconic yachts: Inside the design journey of Lürssen's record-breaking 180m superyacht Azzam

At the time of her launch in 2013 , 180m Azzam was both the longest and biggest yacht in the world – a crown she was to wear for six years. It was only the launch of expedition vessel REV Ocean in late 2019 that pushed Azzam into second place, while her huge volume of 13,136GT is only eclipsed by Dilbar (2016).

In her livery of pure white paint, Azzam remains one of the world’s most impressive yachts. She was built by Lürssen for the Emir of Abu Dhabi to an initial concept from Emirati engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi. Astonishingly, given her size and extreme complexity, she took just three years to build.

“She truly represents another milestone in not only our history, but yachting history as well," said Lürssen managing partner Peter Lürssen proudly, just before she hit the water.

And yet, despite her extraordinary dimensions, this was a yacht initially designed to measure “just” 145m overall. Designer Mario Pedol of Nauta Yachts says that the boat grew as the brief progressed. He was responsible for her sleek exterior styling, maintaining elegant proportions, and takes it as a compliment when people say that Azzam doesn’t look her full 180m.

The exterior lines look just as modern today as they did when she was built. Naturally enough, the owner wanted a “timeless” design – something Pedol has certainly delivered. “ Azzam  features balanced, modern architecture composed of straight lines and proportional volumes, which are some of the main design principles of Nauta Design,” Pedol told Boat International. At the time of commission, the studio’s biggest design was the 90m Light 90, whose design is said to have inspired Azzam .

Interior design work was commissioned from renowned French designer Christophe Leoni, to a brief that called for a turn-of-the-century Empire style. He is better known for his architectural work, and had already worked on some of the Emir’s homes. Back in 2013, he admitted: “Though yachting is not my main area of business, I thoroughly enjoyed the cooperation with Nauta and Lürssen.”

Detail of the yacht’s interior is still a closely guarded secret, although it is believed to mirror the Emir’s homes. Wooden furniture is very much in evidence, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and intricate marquetry. Amongst many other features, the yacht’s interior boasts a vast main salon measuring 29m long and running the full 18m beam of the boat. It is an entirely open-plan space engineered such that there are no pillars. It also offers a “golf practice room” among its fitness facilities.

Engineering was a big part of this project and tested the Lürssen team to the maximum. The yacht had to remain comfortable in the warm waters and high temperatures of the Gulf region. She also required an unusually shallow draft of 4.3m for ease of manoeuvring. That meant the use of pump jets instead of propellers. But the brief also called for speed, and so Azzam is specced with twin gas turbines and twin diesels for a combined output of 94,000hp. It’s enough to get this huge vessel up to more than 30 knots!

The owner of the yacht is Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The yacht’s construction cost more than $600m. The name of the yacht, Azzam, means determination in Arabic.

The exterior design of the yacht was provided by Nauta Design, while interior design was by Christophe Leoni. Fr. Lurssen Werft was responsible for the engineering and construction of the Azzam superyacht. Technical engineering activities were carried out under the leadership of Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi.

Development of the world’s largest superyacht

The yacht was transferred from her original dock at Lurssen Shipyard, measuring 170m, to a larger dock, measuring 220m, in May 2012. Steel cutting for the yacht was held in late 2009.

The yacht successfully completed sea trials in June 2013, prior to its commissioning.

Dimensions of the superyacht

The Azzam measures 180m long, and has a beam of 20.8m and a maximum draft of 4.3m. The hull of the world’s larget yacht is made of steel.

The yacht is larger than the Eclipse by 17.2m. The Eclipse, which was commissioned in 2010, is owned by billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Azzam superyacht has a gross tonnage capacity of approximately 14,000t and features a fuel tank with a capacity of one million litres.

Its main salon measures 29m in length, with its beam measuring 18m. The salon on-board the yacht has an open space featuring no support pillars. The yacht features approximately 50 suites with no large open spaces on the deck, with the interior design of the vessel incorporating the Empire Style.

Azzam superyacht layout and facilities

The interior design of the yacht is highly confidential, but initial photo releases suggest that it features six decks. The rear view of the vessel also suggests that it is powered by jets.

The yacht is capable of providing accommodation facilities for at least 50 professional crew members. Similar to other yachts constructed by Lurssen, Azzam is environment-friendly with decreased carbon dioxide, noise and soot emissions, as well as enhanced fuel-efficiency.

Azzam is also believed to include facilities to use waste heat from the engine to operate the yacht’s desalination system for drinking water. Lurssen has been lauded for being the first yacht-builder to implement this system.

Engine details

The yacht features two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a rated power output of 23,500hp. The yacht can sail at a maximum speed of 30k.

The Ultimate Guide to Azzam Yacht: Specs, Design, and More

Ian Fortey

The Azzam was launched in 2013. She quickly became world famous for her incredible design and unheard of size. Even years later the Azzam remains the biggest yacht in the world. The designer has surpassed calling it a superyacht or even a mega yacht and has settled on the term gigayacht.

Who is the Azzam Yacht Owner?

azzam yacht pool

Azzam was owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was the second president of the United Arab Emirates until his death in 2022. He had a family fortune of $150 billion and was one of the richest people in the world. His assets were estimated by Forbes to be in the range of $830 billion which is almost unbelievable.

Since his death it is unclear who the current owner of Azzam might be since he had eight children and a wife. The yacht may still be in the family or they may have sold it.

How Much Did Yacht Azzam Cost?

azzam yacht pool

It’s believed that the yacht came with an initial price tag, back in 2013, of $605 million. Though obviously reflecting the size of the yacht, the price is also believed to be elevated due to how it was built. After the initial design, the yacht was built in just three years which is an exceptionally short building time for a project of this size. Rumor has it that 4,000 people worked on the speed build and so some of that money went into ensuring it was built not just to standard but quickly as well.

For a truly mind-blowing bit of trivia, someone took the time to determine the number of man hours that went into the building and did the math on how long it would have took one person by themselves to build the yacht. For it to have been delivered to the owner at the same time in 2013, the builder would have had to start making the yacht back in the year 1737 BC. That’s 3,750 years.

Can You Charter the Azzam

azzam yacht pool

Interestingly enough you can probably find charter listings for the Azzam on the internet. If you can, you’ll also see that there are no available dates. The Azzam seems to have been listed as a charter yacht as something of a trick to avoid certain taxes. In Europe, charter yachts are exempt from a number of taxes so as long as it’s listed as a charter it’s cheaper to operate, even if no one is ever really allowed to charter it.

How Big is the Azzam Yacht?

azzam yacht pool

Azzam holds the title of the longest yacht in the world as of 2023, a title it has held since it was launched back in 2013. In fact, it was only surpassed in length in 2019 by a research and exploration vessel called REV Ocean which straddles the line between a yacht and something else and isn’t, strictly speaking, classified as a private yacht.

Azzam clocks in at 180 meters in length which works out to an astounding 590 feet. The displacement is 13,136 gross tons. The beam is 68 feet but it only has a 14 feet draft. For a yacht its size, the Azzam was able to navigate some relatively shallow waters.

How Fast is Azzam and What Engines Does it Use

azzam yacht pool

The Azzam superyacht has a top speed listed at an impressive 32 knots, something you might not expect from such a large vessel. It’s powered by 2 Diesel 17,524 kW (23,500 hp) engines and 2 Gas Turbine engines with an output of 17,524 kW (23,500 hp). That’s a total of about 47,000 horsepower that was forced out through two Wartsila axial flow Modular waterjets and two boosters. It’s designed to easily travel warm and shallow waters

One source says it’s actually pulling 97,000 hp and that, at top speed, she can burn through 13 tonnes of fuel per hour. In any event, she’s able to cross an entire ocean without worrying about needing to refuel.

Inside the Azzam: Design and Features

azzam yacht pool

Azzam was built by German shipyard Lurssen, builders of many of the world’s biggest superyachts. The bold and elegant exterior design is courtesy of Nauta Yachts while the interior, described as an innovative and timeless design, was handled by Christopher Leoni. It’s said he focused on luxurious décor inspired by the Empire style.

There’s a 95 footlong main salon in the yacht that has a totally open design and no pillars. This room also features a chandelier that was designed such that, even at full speed, it won’t rattle. The furniture on board features marquetry in mother of pearl. Word is it used an entire year’s production worth of it.

There is room for 36 guests on board plus an owner’s suite. A crew of 60 maintain the yacht while it’s underway.

azzam yacht pool

You have to assume a yacht of this size has a lot going for it. The sheer size of the Azzam ensured it had room for a lot of features, including stuff you’d not see on many yachts. Some of the known features of the Azzam include:

  • An on-board submarine
  • An on-board golf training room
  • Fully equipped gym
  • A large tender garage
  • Swimming pool
  • An entire missile defense system that can be deployed if the yacht is attacked
  • An entirely bulletproof master suite

These are just a few of the known features. As you can imagine, a motor yacht with a bulletproof master suite and a missile defense system is one that was also built with privacy and security in mind. As such there are only limited details about what is available inside and very few photos of it as well.

The Bottom Line

The mega yacht known as Azzam was owned by the president of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan until his death in 2022. It is currently unknown who has possession of the vessel. Despite being built in 2013, the yacht remains the longest yacht in the world at an astounding 590 feet.

It was never built to be the largest on purpose and, in fact, designers had to add considerable length in the production process to make sure everything fit and functioned properly which boosted it to the size it is now.

At a price of over $600 million, it’s also one of the most expensive yachts ever build. The details of the interior are limited but it’s known to have remarkable defensive capabilities including a missile defense system.

One of the most remarkable features of the interior layout is a 95 foot long lounge area that has no support pillars as part of a visionary modern design. The beams in the ceiling are a meter thick as a result and the large, glass windows/walls were built to handle extreme stress with 7 cm thick glass.
