Bluewater Sailboat – Cape George 36

  • Also Known As: Cape George Cutter, CG36

The Bluewater Sailboat Cape George 36 may be a good choice for individuals who like the traditional aesthetic, seaworthiness, and superb all-around sailing abilities of a Bristol Channel Cutter but require something larger. Based on the time-tested design principals of the late William Atkin, these well-loved boats are robust, well-behaved, comfortable, and fast.

  • Builder: Cecil Lange & Son / Cape George Marine Works

Cecil Lange, a New Zealand native, and his son Brian founded the Cecil Lange and Son boatyard in 1974 on a wooded site on Cape George Road in the small seaside community of Port Townsend, Washington, just south of the US-Canadian border.

Lange admired the work of William Atkin, a 1930s and 1940s American designer of traditional sailing yachts. Lange was particularly interested in the African Star, a wooden cutter that was winning a lot of races in the Puget Sound area and was based on an Atkin 34-foot Tally Ho Major design.

The Cape George 36 was born when Lange commissioned designer Ed Monk to adapt the design for fibreglass construction. Cape George has developed various designs based on the 36 throughout the years, including 31, 34, 38, and 40-foot cutters.

Back when the boats were in full production, you could visit Lange’s yard and observe owners living in RVs as they built their boats alongside others doing the same with the factory right on their doorstep.

Lange retired in 2000, and the small boatyard he established remained quiet until 2004, when Todd Uecker, who had previously worked for Lange for 10 years through the 1990s, and his brother Tim bought the yard and resumed production as its new owners, renaming it Cape George Marine Works along the way. They have since acquired the Sam Morse line of Lyle Hess designs, including the twenty-eight-foot Bristol Channel Cutter and the twenty-two-foot Falmouth Cutter.

The Bluewater Sailboat Cape George 36 was designed by Cecil Lange, a well-known yacht builder from New Zealand. The 36 is a 1970s fibreglass copy of Atkin’s 1930s Tally Ho Major, a conventional cutter with superb all-around sailing manners and a generous dose of speed, designed by Ed Monk. Cape George now has four more siblings based on the same design, and they have a devoted following of owners, with the boatyard developing a reputation as the place to go for repairs and refits.

Many are drawn to her appearance, which includes high bulwarks and vast decks, a low beautiful house and spacious safe cockpit, a mild sheer and wineglass transom, and a massive forward hung rudder, which is unusual for an Atkins design but popular for its simplicity and ease of maintenance.

Her lines are conservative, as one would expect from a yacht of this age. She features a full-length keel with no forefoot cutaway, a common invention in the second part of the twentieth century, which provides her with good directional stability, great self-steering manners, and predictable seagoing performance in all sea conditions. The hull is reminiscent of classic pilot boats, with low overhangs and a long waterline that increases hull speed, while her deep wineglass sections provide a pleasant sea kindly motion that owners enjoy, not to mention very useful load-carrying capabilities.

Performance

These Bluewater sailboats are amply ladened for cruising and are well into the heavy displacement category, but with a good sail area to displacement ratio, the Cape George 36 is amazingly quick, sailing nicely in light weather and being at home when the breeze kicks up. They function admirably even when heavily loaded.

“The hulls are designed to bring the aft ship sections in very precise continuity, and this feature undoubtedly accounts for the exceptional speed and ability of the Atkinized hulls; for, despite a very generous displacement of nearly 22,000 lbs. and a modest spread of sail of approximately 750 square feet, these are fast yachts.” Best Boats to Build or Buy, Ferenc Mate

Quick Notes

The boats were available in various states of completion, ranging from a bare hull to a fully finished yacht. As a result, specimens on the market today might vary greatly in terms of build quality and internal arrangement. Many were handcrafted, and the factory-built boats were semi-custom in nature. Every Cape George 36, including factory-built ones, should be regarded as a one-of-a-kind. Lange expresses concern that some home-built models were not as well ballasted as he would have preferred. Inspect the teak on plywood decks carefully; some boats have problems, and rotted plywood might be difficult to detect under teak.

A common source of concern was the wood-lined fibreglass bulwarks, which provided an easy entry site for water. The wet bulwark typically swells, lifting the teak caprail and exacerbating the leakage problem. Leaks can cause deterioration in the deck and deck beams over time, necessitating costly repairs. The design was replaced in the mid-1990s by solid fibreglass and then foam/fibreglass construction, which resolved the problem. According to Todd Uecker, a big part of their current work is repairing and converting wood-lined bulwark boats to foam and fibreglass.

While I am a few years away from a "big boat" purchase.. I am already starting my research. I can find a lot of info one of the boats I like, but very little about the St Georges Cutters. They seem like a nice design that appears to be both seakindly and roomy below decks. What does the hive mind say about these pretty little small ships?

Cape George 31

Cape George 31 is a 31 ′ 0 ″ / 9.5 m monohull sailboat designed by William Atkin and built by Cape George Marine Works starting in 1990.

Drawing of Cape George 31

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
