Destinations to discover with our Sailing Boat

Exclusive boat day charter, koh phangan.

A full-day day sailing around Samui is the perfect way to see this beautiful tropical island from a different perspective. Heading north-east from the boat’s mooring in Bang Rak Bay, you pass the magnificent golden landmark of the Big Buddha and round the point at Laem Samrong, before heading down the east coast past the beautiful bays of  Thong Sai and Choeng Mon on to the spectacular 7 km stretch of palm-fringed, shimmering white sand that is Chaweng Beach – the island’s most famous and most developed to tourism.

As you sail south past one luxury resort after another, the stunning strip of white sand at Lamai leads around the coastline to the more wild and scenic south coast of the island with its   mountainous backdrop, palm plantations and fishing villages.  Just off-shore the islands of Koh Mat Sum [also known as ‘Pig Island’ for its pig population] and Koh Tean which are relatively untouched and offer beautiful beaches, snorkeling and rustic local seafood restaurants.

As you round south-west tip of the island and head north up east coast, the distinctive sight of the 5 Islands outcrop greets you as you sail on past bay after bay of white sandy beaches, lush jungle-covered hills dotted with luxury villas and the island’s main town and key ferry port Nathon.

With the spectacular limestone archipelago of Ang thong National Marine Park off to the west, you eventually round the north-west tip of the island and along the scenic and well developed north coast with its luxury beach resorts and mountainous backdrop back to Bophut.

A magical, mountainous island which looms large on the horizon from the north coast of Samui, Koh Pha Ngan is also known as ‘Full-Moon Island’ for its monthly beach party at the small town of Haad Rin on the south-east coast  which attract more 20,000+ visitors.

Otherwise, the island is quiet and relatively undeveloped and scenically stunning with its lush, jungle-covered mountains and endless white sandy bays and beaches.

Sailing conditions on the more rugged and inaccessible east coast are ideal at certain times of the year when the south-west winds are blowing, at others, the west or sunset coast offers a different view with its low-hills and palm-fringed beaches and coves.

Just north of Haad Rin on the south-east coast, the picture-perfect Haad Yuan bay is the perfect  destination from Samui for a day of sublime sailing, swimming and beach walking.  A charming, rustic beach resort Bamboo Hut nestles among the boulders on the north side of the bay and is a must-visit known for its challenging wooden walkway, bamboo terrace, colourful clientele and stunning vista of the turquoise bay and mountains.

Sailing north from here, you pass deserted beaches in secluded bays, luxury resorts rub shoulders with small local resorts on stunning sandy stretches like Ao Thong Nai Pan or the picturesque Bottle Beach.

Once you round the north-west tip of the island at Ko Mah – known for the island’s best snorkeling grounds – a string of idyllic palm-fringed bays and coves with wondrous names like Salad Beach and Secret Beach, are home to endless small resorts and delightful beachside  restaurants and ideal for anchoring and going ashore to eat.

Overnight Charter in a Luxury Boat

Angthong national park, koh madsum & koh tan.

This conservation area of 42 jungle-covered karst [limestone] islands is an area of immense natural beauty just 28 km from the north-west tip of Koh Samui.  Seen from the north and west coast of Samui, the archipelago runs north to south like a chain of mysterious islands hovering on the horizon.

Although many motorized boats make a day-trip fairly accessible, for sailing it’s a little too far for the day.  If you want to really explore this remarkable area with its myriad coves, caves, corals, lagoons, jungle-trails and beaches, plan on an overnight trip to experience it at its best.

It’s a paradise for swimming and snorkeling among the corals and caves or taking to your paddle board for a leisurely tour of the enchanting coves and inlets that surround these extraordinary islands.  Your experienced crew will know all the best places to go, so you can relax knowing you are in good hands.

The area is a national park and a highly protected natural area, so an entrance fee is applicable to every vessel that enters, otherwise, most of the archipelago is relatively untouched with the only restaurant and tourism area being at Koh Ang Thong.

This is the place to pack a picnic, all the ingredients for a barbecue and sail off to one of the many stunning islands to anchor and enjoy the peace and quiet and natural beauty of Thailand and hopefully to catch one of Samui’s famously epic sunsets.

Koh Tao (“Turtle Island” in Thai) lives up to its name, being one of the greatest scuba diving destinations in southern Thailand. The perfect white-sand beaches which ring the hilly 21-sq-km island are surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The compact island is about 60 km to the north of Samui and was only really “discovered” in the early 1980s, but now supports a varied selection of hotels, from budget guesthouses and beach bungalows up to 5-star luxury resorts. So far from civilisation and while still being relatively easily reached, it is the idyllic tropical island paradise.

Although popular for day tours by longtail boat from Thong Krut on Samui’s south-west coast, the small, neighbouring islands of Koh Mat Sum and Koh Tean are a little too far for a day-trip from the boat’s mooring in Bang Rak, so we recommend an overnight trip.

Koh Mat Sum is basically one long white sand beach with clear shallow water which has become well-known amongst Instagrammers for its population of rescued pigs, hence its moniker ‘Pig Island’.

Just nearby Koh Tean is well-known for its walkway through the mangrove swamp and its rustic local restaurants serving fresh seafood caught by the island’s fishermen.

The beautiful tropical islands are surrounded by reefs and ideal for lazy days swimming, snorkelling, fishing and paddle boarding around the corals and beaches.

Just to the west lies the distinctive group known as the ‘5 Islands’ on the south-west corner of Samui.  The waters around these precious bird’s nest collecting islands are deep and it’s fascinating to sail through the islands marveling at the small collectors’ shacks that cling to the steep cliff faces.

Returning to reality seems impossible once you’ve experienced island life on Koh Phangan.

So, don’t!

After traversing this iconic Thai island, zip to Koh Samui, another island paradise filled with towering palm trees, powder-fine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a vibrant party scene.

Koh Samui is the place to be in the Gulf of Thailand. Located south of Koh Phangan, this island is slightly larger and home to tropical views, a lively nightlife scene, luxury hotels, and great snorkeling spots. If you’re not ready to return to the mainland, this should be your next stop.

The distance between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui is only 14 km/8.8 miles, and rides take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes, depending on your transport. So, no matter your choice, you’ll be there in no time.

Most routes depart Koh Phangan from Thong Sala Pier or Haad Rin Pier and arrive in Koh Samui via Maenam Pier, Nathon Pier, Bengrak Pier, or Samui Haad Rin Queen Pier. Don’t worry about getting lost. Since these islands are pretty small, you’re never too far from your destination.

Prepare for the island experience of a lifetime. Scroll down to get the lowdown on traveling from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui.

Five spectacular sights in Koh Samui

Getting ready to touchdown in Koh Samui? Don’t miss out on these must-see attractions.

Beach hopping — Koh Samui is a beach bum’s paradise. From Chaweng Beach to Maenam Beach, this island is jam-packed with sandy havens where you can sunbathe, practice yoga, or paddle on top of azure waves.

Samui Big Buddha — This 12-meter (39-feet) golden Buddha temple sits majestically on a small rocky island on the northeastern corner of Koh Samui. There’s no entrance fee.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks — Calling all geographers. The Hin Ta and Hin Yai are two, erm, unique rock formations on Lamai Beach. We won’t spoil the secret, but they make for a great photo spot, so don’t forget your selfie stick.

Bohput/Fisherman’s Village — One of the main areas on the island, Bohput is a great place to spend a chilled afternoon. This rustic village has lots of small cafes, bars, and even a Friday Night Market.

Secret Buddha Garden — This calm oasis, also known as the Magic Garden, is surrounded by waterfalls, valleys, and coconut plantations. Within the garden, you can admire delicate statues and native flora and fauna while enjoying a quiet moment.

You have three options to get from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui: ferry, bus+ferry, or van+ferry. Here’s how each differs…

The fastest and cheapest way to travel from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui is by ferry. So, unsurprisingly, this is the most popular option. Ferry rides start as low as $6, perfect for those looking for a bargain.

The only drawback for ferry-only trips is that you get dropped at the pier — not your hotel or the airport. Something to consider if you have somewhere you need to be in a hurry.

The four types of ferry to Koh Samui include:

High-Speed Ferry — Includes onboard A/C, W/Cs, and 20 kg bag and 7 kg hand luggage allowances. But don’t be fooled by the name; it’s not always the fastest ferry. Be sure to check the times.

Speedboat Ferry — The fastest ferry option, but it doesn’t include W/C or AC due to the small boat size.

Standard Ferry — The boat has onboard A/C, WC, English-speaking staff, and food and drink options. All passengers are allowed a 20 kg bag and 7 kg hand luggage, and children aged 0 to 1 travel for free.

Catamaran Ferry — A catamaran is a watercraft with two parallel hulls for extra stability. This ship has a WC, and children ages 0 to 1 can travel for free.

Pro tip: Severe weather conditions can affect ferry journeys. In the case of bad weather, your trip might be refunded or postponed until the next day. This is more common in the wet season.

By bus+ferry

Alongside ferry-only journeys, you can opt for a standard bus and ferry route. This runs twice a day and takes you from Thong Sala Pier, Koh Phangan, to a hotel drop-off point of your choosing. Ideal if you want to arrive at your accommodation without working out Koh Samui public transport on the spot.

Amenities on this route include A/C, WC, a 20 kg bag and 7 kg hand luggage, and ferry life jackets.

By van+ferry

Another option is a standard van and ferry. These rides include AC, W/Cs, a 20 kg bag and hand luggage space, and life jackets on the boat.

Some standard van and ferry rides take you to Samui Airport (USM), and some arrive at Sub Somwang Plai Laem Pier. Also, some offer hotel pickups and private transfer options. Check the details of your preferred tour operator to be sure.

If you are traveling in a small group of up to seven people, you could hire a private van to make your journey even easier.

About the ride from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui

The ride from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui takes you south through the Gulf of Thailand. If you enjoy scenic journeys, this one is a must. The ferries travel through glistening waters, giving you undisturbed views of smaller islands and a distant glimpse of the Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park (to the west of the islands).

This is a popular and safe route for all — including solo and female travelers.

Most ferries are well-stocked with amenities. For extra comfort, look for A/C, as it can get hot on this route.

It’s also a brief journey; you only cover 14 km (8.8 miles). So, sit back and enjoy the sights as you glide towards Koh Samui.

The best time to travel from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui

The best time to travel from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui is from January to April. The temperatures are warm and dry during this period, and the sea is perfect for swimming. Expect average temperatures of 28°C to 31°C (82.4°F to 87.8°F) and little rain.

From May to November, the weather remains warm, but there’s a higher chance of rain and humidity. This can make exploring unpleasant, and more ferries will likely be canceled due to weather.

The peak of the rain falls from September to December.
