Your Comfort

When you combine one of the best insulated engine bays with a modern diesel engine, you get one of the most silent boats on the market today.

  • One level living concept makes the movement onboard the Greenline 39 safe and effortless
  • City water connection connects the boat’s water system with the shore water grid – just like the electricity connected to shore power.
  • In the owner’s cabin, the beds can be moved to create single or double berths.
  • The Greenline 40 has three different entry height levels (stern platform, side exit, bow), allowing you to safely board and disembark your yacht at all times.

Your Experience

Greenline 40 is the best choice for a couple with occasional friends or a small family of experienced yachtsmen, for hardened sailors or even for newcomers to boating with all the comforts of home.

  • She runs silently, without smoke, or wake in electric mode and drastically reduces the amount of fossil fuel used during a boating season at sea, on lakes or inland waterways.
  • Diesel or electric? Hybrid! All it takes is a flip of a switch to turn a diesel driven boat into full electric and back. Straightforward and simple.

We are Dymph and Wim Bijnen, the proud owners of Greenline 40 named Dymple. We made some changes to the boat – the blue hull, extra teak on the sun deck and on the benches in the cockpit gives this boat more cachet. For this summer a trip is planned to the Olympics in London where there is a big Sail Parade on the Thames to London.

As we owned lots of boats before we know it’s impossible to design and built a new boat without any problems, however Greenline/Seaway pursued in getting the boat right! We have never seen service like this before, big compliments to Seaway and Nova yachting. We are now the proud owners of this wonderful hybrid. As we use the boat in the northern part of the Netherlands it’s awesome to sail electric through parts were there are only lots of birds, the silence is amazing. What we also love is just anchor somewhere in the middle of nature without worrying about shore-power and still have all the luxury like we were at home. In short; we love the setup of this hybrid! It’s quiet, full of luxury and very versatile. Love it! Greenline 33, too awesome.

We are very happy with our Greenline 40. It gives a new dimension for family navigation. The boat is comfortable and really easy to handle.

Jon and Anne Fleming live on the Gold Coast. They have owned a Greenline Hybrid 40 since 2013 and clocked up over 1000NM in the first year. The couple have owned a lot of boats over the years – we asked them why they chose the Greenline this time.

“We wanted to sometimes travel without noise. We chose the hybrid version of the Greenline for that reason and often use it when the tide is in our favour – and it’s terrific – both effective and efficient. We live on the Gold Coast and go away for a day or 2 at a time heading to South Stradbroke Island and Jumpinpin. The Greenline is very comfortable for overnight trips away with everything we want – we often say it’s just like an apartment. We love the large galley and great fridge. We also love the full size beds in the main cabin – it’s easy to divide them in the in day time and push them together in seconds at night.

Easter in Mooloolaba

For Easter we went to Mooloolaba which is around 80 miles from us. It was quite rough off the northern top of Moreton Island but we were reasonably comfortable on board and the boat handled the conditions beautifully. We had 4 adults and 2 children on board for the long weekend. We had a fantastic time – dropping the stern down to enjoy the water and indoor-outdoor living. I guess for us the Greenline stood out from the crowd. We wanted plenty of shade, walk around decks, single level living and a swim platform. We also love the overall visibility and the fact that we can sit in the cabin and watch TV. The living space is really well thought out. We are absolutely thrilled with boat and our experience with eyachts has been very good. They attend to everything straightaway and are a pleasure to deal with.”

John Bossi had his eye on the Greenline for months. After several boat shows, lots of reading and research, he made a shared decision with his wife, Jo. The couple finally settled on the Greenline 33 Hybrid over their second choice, a catamaran. In his own words, John shares with us what his family loves about the Greenline 33…

Why the Greenline 33? “At first the attraction was the styling. The Greenline has a unique look for the market…it’s retro but modern. The combination of design and material like the beautiful woods give it a great look. I’m also impressed with its phenomenal value for money just in the purchase price. That’s on top of the savings you gain from its hybrid engine and solar power features.”

Where has the Greenline taken you? “Mainly day trips on Sydney Harbour and an overnight at Cockle Bay. We had it offshore in a 2 to 3 meter swell and it exceeded my expectations. The Greenline is gentle and plows through waves easily. It’s a supremely seaworthy yacht. The steering is relaxed and doesn’t roll as much as some of our past boats. There is none of the slamming you get on a planning hull. We look forward to doing some coastal cruising and more overnights in the future.”

How’s life aboard? “We love it! We have 3 children and lots of friends and family we like to entertain. I’m Italian and my wife loves to cook big meals – its our way of relaxing, creating memories with our favourite people. The Greenline is a perfect fit for our lifestyle – it’s truly an entertainers’ boat.” The Greenline has a great layout with a seamless flow from inside to out. I’m always involved in what’s happening when I’m driving. Again, in my other boats, I was on the flybridge talking down to everyone below. We also had our Christmas party on board. I invited the staff from my dental practice to a restaurant for what they thought was lunch and showed up in the Greenline. They were ecstatic! With 10 guests on board we had a blast cruising Sydney Harbour on a beautiful summer day.”

Any surprises on the Greenline? “One night we docked off Cockle Bay for dinner thinking it would be a great way to avoid driving late at night. We went back to the boat around midnight when we realized the party on Cockle Bay was just getting started! Surprisingly, as soon as we shut the door our world went silent for a great night of sleep! I had no idea the sound insulation was that good.”

What would you like potential Greenline owners to know? “It’s an extremely versatile boat. The brochures indicates this, but it wasn’t until going to 3 boat shows and owning one myself that I realised what that meant. There are actually 5 saloon configurations we use when we have guests aboard (see photos below).

1. Dining with L shaped and side seating 2. Coffee Table seating 3. Comfortable helms seat for two 4. Open Saloon using coffee table as a serving table or seat on bathing platform 5. Guest berths with a double and single bed

Each configuration takes seconds to arrange. Also the bed in the owner’s cabin is so easy to convert – again seconds. Having two entrances into the bathroom is a really nice privacy feature. The engines are also easy to access.”

How was eyachts ? “Working with Dan Jones was great… there were never problems, only solutions. I found that across the board with everyone I was in contact with at eyachts. I’ve made a lot of purchases from dental equipment to motorcycles. I have never experienced a standard set so high across an organisation. I love the espresso machine that Dan gave me as a purchase gift – perfect for an Italian. It was very thoughtful and a great ending to a wonderful experience.”

Our names are Ron and Andrena Williams. We purchased our Greenline 33 about 5 months ago through a wonderful agent; Richard Wardenburg and his lovely wife Suzy, from Auckland NZ. We have really enjoyed this boat, it is ideal for our situation in The Marlborough Sounds, S.I. of New-Zealand. The Marlborough Sounds has 1,500 km`s of coastal waterways, with variable winds and seas flat, to quite rough at times. Greenline travels well and, no-one experiences motion sickness on this boat. It is ergonomically excellent, with the extended deck area enabling us to partake in more activities, more easily, such as divine, swimming. The cost per hour to “run” at 5.7litres of diesel, is envied by other boat users. PS: My wife has a fear of water and boats but has gotten quite confident on our Greenline 33.

It’s quiet, full of luxury and very versatile. Love it! Greenline 33, too awesome.

Despite the acceptance of hybrid technology in cars, similar technology in boats still raises a few eyebrows, but there is no reason why it has any less promise in marine applications. Indeed, it may well be the future of powered boating and Slovenian boat builder Greenline is leading the way.

Hull shape and Hybrid propulsion are reducing the fuel consumption and environmental impact as well as increasing the comfort and quality of life on board.

The Greenline 33 is not only the big surprise of the year but arguably the most significant new boat of the decade.

Hybrid Yacht Comparison: Greenline 39 vs Greenline 40

greenline 40 hybrid yacht for sale exterior05

Which Is Right For You?

There is a lot of buzz in the yachting world about Greenline Yachts. Deservedly so. Forward thinking technology, exacting quality standards and many years of experience have allowed Greenline to achieve world leadership in pursuit of more environmentally friendly yachting .

Read further for a feature by feature hybrid yacht comparison between Greenline 39 and Greenline 40.

Like some of the more ecologically responsible automobiles, but on a much larger scale, the hybrid drive on Greenline yachts propels the vessel exclusively by electricity at lower speeds. It’s possible to cruise around a harbor or take a short and almost silent “sunset” cruise without burning any petroleum at all. When more power is required, high efficiency diesel engines take over. The combustion engines recharge the propulsion batteries while engaged.

With experience gleaned through launching hundreds upon hundreds of hybrid motor yachts, Greenline recently announced additional refinements to the technology. H-drive system 6G incorporates improvements in the charging capabilities of Greenline yachts, whether the electricity is sourced from solar panels, shore power, or mechanically generated by the diesel engines. The 6G system now permits a “crossover” operation on twin engine applications. One drive system remains in electric mode while the other runs in diesel. For example, if the starboard drive system were in diesel mode and the port drive system in electric, a Greenline yacht could achieve traditional “trawler” speeds without depleting the battery bands and burning only a few litres of diesel per hour.

(Click on image to enlarge it)

greenline 39 hybrid yacht exterior side view

In addition to a lower carbon footprint, benefits of a hybrid drive include reduced fuel costs as well as longer intervals between any service cycles based on engine hours. Fewer engine hours as well as the presence of an emerging technology will promote higher resale values. All Greenline yachts are equipped with solar panels as one of three options to recharge the batteries, (shore power and the diesel drive engines are the others). When at anchor for an extended period, the solar panels prove adequate to keep all systems and accessories powered up. There is no need for a noisy and expensive diesel generator.

Future owners who find Greenline’s technology, styling, and quality build appealing will typically examine Greenline’s range of models to identify which yacht would best meet their needs, while being realistically attainable from a budget standpoint.

Greenline 39 vs. Greenline 40

It would be tempting to wonder why Greenline bothers to offer both a GL39 as well as a GL40 model. After all, how much difference can 1-foot make?  As it turns out, more than many people might suspect.

In researching this hybrid yacht comparison, we found Greenline 39- and 40-foot category is a busy place in the yacht-building world. The size lends itself to meeting the yachting needs of those both moving up to a larger cruising yacht from something their family has outgrown, as well as the needs of folks “stepping down” at an age where a larger vessel is becoming difficult to handle or justify. 39 or 40 feet provides enough space for a cruising couple to be entirely comfortable, as well as accommodate occasional overnight guests. A well-built 39- or 40-foot yacht will typically withstand much worse weather than the owners will ever encounter.  For a host of reasons, this is a popular size range.

Greenline chose to establish this intersection in their range as the point where people looking for “big boat” features can find them on the GL40 . Those favoring a more basic approach and placing a slightly higher priority on affordability will often gravitate to the GL39 .

greenline 39 hybrid yacht for sale interior golden wood tone 6

Single vs Twin Hybrid Drives.

One of the most fundamental differences between the GL39 and the GL40 is that the GL39 relies on a single diesel/electric hybrid drive system and the GL40 features twin diesel/electric drives. The single engine permits Greenline to offer the GL39 at a lower initial price, allows more workspace in the engine compartment, and routine maintenance will be less expensive. In diesel mode and as commonly operated, the GL39 will burn less fuel per nautical mile.

The discussion between twin-engine and single-engine advocates likely goes back to the beginning of the Industrial Age, and fans of twin-engine technology correctly note that two engines, as found on the GL40, make the boat much easier to handle in close quarters. Not to mention allowing a greater turn of speed. The top speed of the GL39 is 14 knots. Top speed for the GL40 is 20 knots.

The concept of mechanical redundancy cannot be ignored when comparing single and twin-engine approaches. With a hybrid yacht the redundancy advantage of the two engines may be slightly diminished. The ability to switch to battery drive will propel either vessel for up to about 20 nautical miles on a full charge, quite possibly sufficient to make the nearest port in case of mechanical failure.

greenline 39 hybrid yacht exterior front

Hull Design Differences

There’s a difference in the basic hull design between the GL39 and the GL40 . The GL39 is the newer of the two. The GL39 includes a single, passive, stabilizing “fin” just forward of the prop. The GL40 uses two stabilizers located ahead of and outboard of the props to provide even greater resistance to rolling motions. While the nominal length may be only one foot difference, the GL40 is “beamier” and that creates additional benefits both on deck and in the interior layout.

Technical Specs Comparison

LOA 39' 40'
Beam 12'4" 13'6"
Draft 2'11" 2'9"
Dry Weight 16534 17636
Bridge Clearance 9'8" 9'1"
Fuel Capacity 185 gal 185 gal
Water Capacity 105 gal 105 gal
Holding Tank 21 gal 21 gal
Range at 7 knots 1000 nm 700 nm

If cockpit seating is a high priority, the GL39 offers a bit more than the GL40.

The Greenline GL40 has a side deck on both sides of the main cabin, with full height bulwarks. Greenline’s GL39 features a side deck only on the starboard side. Consequently, the GL40 can utilize both port and starboard boarding gates, while the GL39 must board from the starboard side.

The Greenline 40 features six high output 330 watt solar panels totaling 1980 watts of output. The GL39 has four solar panels at 1320 watts total. If you convert this to amps at 12 volts DC you get 27.5 amps peak from each solar panel which is more than enough energy to power the boats house loads while also storing energy in the lithium battery bank for later use at night. This enables the boats to stay on anchor for days with plenty of passive power available from the sun. No generator required.

Interior Layout

Greenline’s GL39 and GL40 models have extremely similar interior layouts. Every compartment on the GL40 is measurable larger than on the GL39, and that creates opportunities for upgrades in comfort and amenities. For example, the GL40 offers a king size berth and the GL39 offers a queen. The GL39 uses a one-piece windshield, while the GL40 uses three separate pieces of glass separated by mullions. The one-piece windshield helps contribute to a more open and airy “feeling” aboard the GL39, even though it is slightly smaller than the GL40 .

greenline 39 hybrid yacht for sale interior

And The Winner Is?

In the eye of the beholder.

Yachting is a very subjective experience, and there’s a good market for both the Greenline GL39 and the Greenly GL40. It’s perhaps less a matter of one vessel being “better than” the other than it is a matter of appreciating the differences. If twin hybrid engine technology is a critical priority or the additional interior space and improved side deck access are appealing, the GL40 is likely to be the preferred choice. If a more affordable initial price (a savings of roughly $150k), and somewhat lower operating costs are high priorities, then the GL39 provides a single-engine alternative to the GL40 while delivering the same hybrid technology with many of the same comforts and conveniences found on the GL40.

New Greenline 40 Hybrid: A Cruiser’s Boat

' src=

The new Greenline 40 Hybrid is a cruiser’s boat. It’s user-friendly, easily handled by two people, but not too big to be overwhelming. And it has a state-of-the-art hybrid power system, delivering 22-knot speeds under twin Volvo diesel power, while also providing silent running at 11 knots under solar-electric power.

The two staterooms and one head make it large enough to hold a family, or another couple, on an extended cruise, and its bridge clearance of just 12’ 2 inches are meant to slide under those structures on the Great Loop or the Intracoastal Waterway in the Southeast.

Greenline started making electric-powered boats back in 2008; it was a pioneer in what is now a rapidly growing field. The Slovenian builder now has a fleet ranging from 33 to 68 feet. The 40 Hybrid is on display at the Miami show.

greenline 40 solar electric hybrid silent eco yacht

The 40 has an array of solar panels on the coachroof. You can see how the hybrid system works in the video below. But the solar array and batteries essentially make the 40 a mobile power station, providing a constant supply of AC power on board.

The boat has twin 50kW electric motors producing the 11-knot top speed under electric power alone. The boat is quiet at that speed; the only noise is a slight hum. Under electric power it has a range of 30 nm, enough to explore one anchorage and move on to the next one; an optional extender increases that to 75 nm at 5 knots.

The Greenline 40 Hybrid is an efficient boat, with a light, semi-displacement hull designed to produce less drag and easy boat handling in various sea conditions. It comes with a standard bow thruster to help with docking.

Below, the two beds in the master stateroom in the bow can be pushed together, while there are two separate beds in the guest stateroom a bit aft on the port side.

Greenline 40 Testimonial by The Flemings

The Fleming’s have now owned their Greenline 40 for 7 years, and they absolutely love the boat. Jon first became aware of Greenline as a brand around 2011. European boating magazines were writing about the Greenline when their first model (a 33 footer) started winning “boat of the show” at most European boat shows at the time. Jon contacted us, wanting to undergo a test run our Greenline 33, and had his first experience in that boat on Middle Harbour At that time, Jon and his wife owned a 42 ft Herreschoff Leeboard Ketch which they sailed in Sydney and Pittwater. They later relocated to the Gold Coast and sailed her up to join them, going as far north as the Whitsundays. They had owned her for 14 years, but were beginning to think ‘power craft’. The Greenline 33 was impressive, but once Greenline began to talk about a new 40 ft, twin engine version they were developing. Eventually the Fleming’s decided that this new boat would better suit them and their plans to do extended cruising. So, at the Sydney boatshow in 2012 they signed up with eYachts and haven’t regretted it!

Barcodoro of Netherlands

We fell in love with the greenline 40 immediately. My wife wanted it so badly, and also bought it through a broker in Portugal. we had it transported by road to the Netherlands. We have now sailed with it for a season and are so happy with it, the space and ease of use. Wow what a boat. We call him the "Barcodoro" There are videos of us on Youtube. And many more to follow.

Greenline 40 Electric, the future is now

Plugboats - everything electric boats and boating

Classic look hydrofoiling electric boat debuts in Moscow

A team in Russia has developed this sleek hydrofoiling electric boat with a retro-tech classic runabout look, both inside and out.

The boat is called the Molniya – Russian for ‘lightning’ – and uses fixed surface piercing (SP) foils rather than the retractable inverted-T fully submerged (FS) type on boats like the Candela 7 .

The Molniya prototype was built by Artem Markov and a small team he assembled in Moscow. Markov is a graduate of the Moscow Automobile and Road Construction Institute, where he was part of their Formula MADI electric car racing team that competed against other universities from around the world.

Hydrofoiling electric boat idea started in 2016

Like many other electric boat developers he is also a long time sailor and says “ I have never been able to understand what is the beauty of going on motor boats with a lot of vibration and noise. So, I decided I wanted to find a way to transfer the silence and comfort of a sailing yacht to a boat. The idea came to me in 2016, and from that moment I started working on the project .”

He is a big fan of the work that the team at Candela has been doing, and is well versed in their reasonings of why hydrofoiling is the way to reduce drag and increase efficiency and comfort. So he knew foiling was the way to go and began to design his dream boat.

hydrofoiling electric boat has static foils on the hull close to the waterline

It is one thing to know exactly what one wants, but b udget realities quite often make inventors adapt. So he found a classic fibreglass-and-aluminum hull and went to work redesigning and converting it. The team had to strengthen and reinforce the hull to handle the stresses from the front foils. At the stern of the boat they designed  protruding half-wings that would help lift the boat onto those front SP foils as it accelerated.

80kW motor mounted to stern drive unit

greenline 40 solar electric hybrid silent eco yacht

That gives the 8.9 m • 29 ft boat a cruising speed of about 20 kts • 37 km/h and maximum speed of 36 kts • 66km/h. As for range, the Molniya can go for 135 Nautical miles at 5 kts, 17 Nm at 25 kts and 20 Nm at the top speed.

For the battery, they have taken stock lithium-ion cells and developed the modules themselves. The size is 160kW and there are some creative and useful ideas incorporated into the charging and battery management systems. One is the ability to connect a warning system to a GPS route so if you are driving at a speed that is taking yo u beyond range of getting back to shore the motor will automatically slow down. When you do get back, a full 0-100% charge takes 3.5 hours and you can check status through SMS.

hydrofoiling electric boat has dashboard with wood steering wheel and gauges similar to a 1950s car interior

One of the intriguing things about the Molniya is that all of the electric boat technology has been incorporated into a striking overall retro look. The dashboard looks like it might have been taken from a 1950s luxury car catalogue, but of course the actual meters are all digital. The interior of the entire boat harkens back to an earlier day, appearing ready to whisk 6 passengers off to a swing era supper club.

From prototype to production

Having built and tested the prototype from an existing hull, the goal of Markov and the team is to move to production mode and use the materials he always envisioned in his dream boat. While the aluminum and fibreglass of the original have been useful for testing, speed and range will benefit from materials like much lighter carbon-kevlar.

hydrofoiling electric boat seen from above

The adapted stern drive was useful for proving the hydrofoiling electric boat concept, but all of the designers and engineers are keen to see the improved efficiency they will get from a motor, drive and battery system they have designed from scratch for the Molniya. As for the foils themselves, the production model will use lighter, thinner composites instead of stainless steel.

Obviously the spring and summer of 2020 has not provided the best opportunities to introduce the prototype at boat shows and stir up interest with consumers, the trade or investors. It seems, though that the Molniya is the type of boat that should appeal to peopl looking for the same thing Artem wanted for himself: a classic motor boat experience but one that is quiet, odour free…and smooth sailing.
