Island Spirit

Explore island spirit.

The Island Spirit Catamaran brand, a three-time winner of the Top Ten Sail Magazine awards, is widely recognized for its spacious design and superior sailing performance. Originally manufactured and introduced in the United States in 1998, production was moved to Thailand in 2012 to provide competitive pricing while maintaining the highest build quality. Each Island Spirit Catamaran must complete a rigorous safety and quality inspection as well as a sea trial to ensure international CE standards are met. Island Spirit Catamarans can be customized to every customer’s specific needs in terms of equipment level and layout, with the possibility to choose the configuration best suited for a charter program to maximize your return on your investment. Island Spirit Catamarans is now focusing on green energy boats and has launched the IS525E, an electric-powered catamaran! The launch is scheduled for the 2023 Annapolis sailboat show, though we are accepting pre-orders now – and because the manufacturing capacity is limited in the first year, only a few production slots remain available.

In the development of the IS525 a key aspect from the beginning was to be able to design the boat with the electric drive option.

To meet these goals Group Island Spirit partnered with major system developers in the EV industry for the development of the drive system. The technology has matured and the strategy is to leverage on this mature technology for the implementation into the IS525.

Superyacht sinks latest: Investigators reveal where bodies were found as probe looks at 'crew's responsibility'

Italian officials revealed at a news conference there could be "a question of manslaughter" as they opened a shipwreck investigation and said the probe is also looking at the "crew's responsibility".

Saturday 24 August 2024 18:33, UK

  • Superyacht sinking

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

  • Prosecutor: There 'could be a question of manslaughter'
  • Probe 'concentrating' on crew's responsibility
  • Seven bodies recovered after five-day search of superyacht wreckage off Sicily
  • Saturday's papers pay tribute to youngest victim Hannah Lynch
  • Hannah's sister pays tribute to 'my little angel'
  • Explained: Inside the superyacht | What challenges have faced divers?
  • Eyewitness: Sombre scenes greet rescue teams as final body is brought ashore
  • Live reporting by Niamh Lynch

We're ending our live coverage for this evening but here is a recap of what we know:

  • Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into the Bayesian sinking;
  • Officials have revealed more details on their investigation and the difficult five-day rescue mission;
  • The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
  • Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
  • The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.

One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.

It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.

Thursday 22 August

The search resumes for the remaining missing person.

The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.

Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.

The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

Friday 23  August

The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.

A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".

Saturday 24 August

A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.

A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.

Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".

"He was riveting.  He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.

Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".

"In particular, he was wonderful with children.  I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.

She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".

Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".

"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain.  Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.

"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."

A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.

"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.

"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:

Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.

Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?

Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.

Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.

"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.

"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."

How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.

"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).

But why was the five-day search so difficult?

More on this morning's press conference.

One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking.

Watch the announcement below...

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below...

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.

"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.

"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.

"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?

"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."

Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.

Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."

"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.

"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.

"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."

Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.

"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.

"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch is still missing alongside his 18-year-old daughter

Six people remain unaccounted for after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, including a father and daughter, as well as two married couples.

UK businessman Mike Lynch, who helped establish Cambridge Neurodynamics and co-founded the firm Autonomy, is still missing alongside his daughter Hannah Lynch , an 18-year-old student.

Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank International, and his wife Judy Bloomer were also on the yacht when it sank and have not yet been found.

Chris Morvillo , a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewellery designer, have also been confirmed as missing.

Earlier we reported that the body of a man recovered near the sunken Sicilian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas , a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have described him as having "a smile that lit up the room".

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer - who are still missing following the sinking of the Bayesian yacht - are “incredibly generous people”, the reverend of their local church says.

Speaking to BBC South East, Rev Tim Edwards, from Knockholt in Kent, says “at the moment there’s an awful lot that we don’t know”.

He describes the couple as being “very much” part of the village community and active with local charities.

What are waterspouts? published at 19:52 British Summer Time 20 August 19:52 BST 20 August

According to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder, the Bayesian left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor".

Witnesses later described seeing a waterspout form during a storm that hit in the area overnight, and - as mentioned in our last post - it is believed to have struck the yacht before it sank.

Most are familiar with what tornadoes look like - they are rotating columns of destructive winds, protruding from the base of clouds down to the ground. According to BBC Weather, waterspouts are just that too, but they form over water rather than land.

Instead of dust and debris swirling around the core of strong winds, it is water mist whipped up from the surface.

Like tornadoes, most are only short-lived, narrow columns and are not easily picked out on weather radars, so many will go unreported.

How could the yacht have sunk? published at 19:39 British Summer Time 20 August 19:39 BST 20 August

It is believed the Bayesian was struck by a tornado over the water - otherwise known as a waterspout - causing the luxury yacht to capsize and sink to the seabed.

There are separate reports the boat's mast snapped during the freak storm, while other factors in the boat's tipping over could include water entering through hatches and doors which might have been left open because of warm weather off the Italian coast.

Graphic showing a boat with a mast standing straight and 1) says "High winds or a tornado-like waterspout may have tipped the yacht onto its side. The second image shows it leaning at 45 degrees in the water and says 2) "Water could then have entered hatches and doors left open because of warm weather". The third picture shows it lying on its side on the seabed and says 3) "The yacht is on its starboard (right) side on the seabed, 50m underwater"

One of Mike Lynch's neighbours says she was "horrified" to find out he was missing and describes it as the "worst news".

"I just couldn't believe it, I thought this can't be right," Ruth Leigh, of Pettistree in Suffolk, says.

Leigh says they have lived near each other for around 15 years and describes Lynch as a "fantastic neighbour" and a "very charitable man".

"Even though he was incredibly wealthy and a very important person he never ever gave that impression.

"Whenever he met you he always remembers your name, he would chat to you - incredibly friendly and down to earth, which we thought was a great quality," she adds.

Did the yacht’s keel play a role in it sinking? published at 18:46 British Summer Time 20 August 18:46 BST 20 August

By Tom Edgington

There has been speculation about the type of keel on the Bayesian and whether it may have been a factor in it sinking.

The website for Perini Navi – the yacht’s builder – is currently not available. However, by searching internet archives BBC Verify has obtained the boat’s 2018 brochure.

In the “features and performance” section, the document gives dimensions for the keel in an "up" position - 4.05m (13ft) - and in a "down" position - 9.83m (32ft) - suggesting it is retractable.

The BBC has contacted Perini Navi but has not had a reply.

A keel is a support structure underneath the boat which projects downwards and helps keep it balanced on the surface.

Certain boats might require a retractable keel in order to enter shallow water without getting stuck.

We don’t know if the Bayesian’s keel was up or down at the time it was struck by a storm.

However, Andrew Fairbrass who runs a large yacht engineering business says “when you're sailing, you have to keep the keel down and it does make a big difference to stability”.

British investigators arrive but hopes for miracle vanish published at 18:08 British Summer Time 20 August 18:08 BST 20 August

island spirit yachts

In cloudy skies and on choppy waters, the search has gone on all day, a helicopter scouring the site where the Bayesian capsized as divers plunged deep below.

They’re trying to access the wreckage of the yacht that was hit by a tornado-like waterspout, and is now 50m (164ft) underwater.

Given the depth, each dive can only be 10 minutes, and with the boat still largely intact it’s hard to get access inside.

British investigators are now here to assess what happened during the extreme weather that hit the Bayesian.

Severe heat and violent storms had prompted a weather alert before the yacht went down.

Tonight the search goes on - but any hope of a Mediterranean miracle survival has all but vanished.

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother has told the BBC his family are "coping the best we can" as rescue workers continue to search for him off the coast of Sicily.

The banker is one of six people still missing since the Bayesian yacht capsized.

Jeremy Bloomer tells the BBC he has not received any new updates on the search efforts to find Jonathan, beyond that divers are struggling to access the wreck of the boat.

He says: "It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know."

Jeremy continues: "He was my older [brother] by half an hour. So it means a lot when you lose a twin brother. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."

Asked how he was coping, he says the situation is "terrible" and something that's "beyond your wildest imagination".

Two members of crew named as survivors of yacht sinking published at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 August 17:39 BST 20 August

We've just heard from the Italian coastguard, which has named two more survivors of the yacht sinking.

South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken, who worked as crew members on the Bayesian, managed to get to safety after the vessel sank in the early hours of Monday morning.

In total , 15 of the 22 people on board have been rescued . Among them are:

  • Mike Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares
  • Charlotte Golunski, her husband James and their one-year-old daughter
  • Ayla Ronald, who worked as a lawyer for Mike Lynch, and her partner

Twelve people were vacationing on Mike Lynch 's yacht, alongside 10 crew members, when it sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily. The gathering was reportedly a celebration.

Earlier this year, Lynch was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges arising from the sale of his firm Autonomy to US tech giant Hewlett Packard. The decade-long legal battle had led to Lynch's extradition from the UK.

Upon being cleared of the charges in June, the British entrepreneur said he was "elated" and thanked his legal team for their "tireless work". Some of them were on the yacht alongside him when it sank.

Chris Morvillo , a lawyer for Clifford Chance - the law firm that represented Lynch - is among the six people still missing. So is his wife Neda Morvillo , an American jewellery designer.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at the same law firm, also worked on Lynch's case. Both she and her partner were invited to the yacht and were rescued when it sank.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer - who appeared as a defence witness for Lynch during his trial - and his wife Judy Bloomer were on the boat when disaster struck. Both are unaccounted for.

Charlotte Golunski, the board director of Luminance - an artificial intelligence platform founded by Lynch - was on board, along with her husband and one-year-old daughter. All three survived.

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares and daughter Hannah were also there. Bacares has been rescued but 18-year-old Hannah is still missing.

The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have been paying tribute to him. Gareth Williams, who lives in Antigua, knew Thomas for 30 years.

"I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit," he told me.

The two grew up together in Antigua, where Recaldo spent his time during off-season.

"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Eli Fuller met Recaldo some 25 years ago while out socialising in Antigua.

"He knew everybody and was friends with everybody. He'd always ask how you were doing, how your family was - he was always positive.

"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after."

He added that Thomas became an inspiration to young black children who wanted to get into yachting.

"The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."

Search efforts complicated by wreck's position underwater, coastguard says published at 16:42 British Summer Time 20 August 16:42 BST 20 August Breaking

The search for the missing six passengers "continues without stopping" but divers have not found anything, the Italian coastguard says.

The coastguard says that specialist divers are "evaluating the feasibility of safely entering the wreck", but that the search is being "complicated by the depth and the position of the hull lying on the seabed" - at 50m below the surface.

It adds there is no trace of "hydrocarbon pollution" - meaning oil or other similar fuel is not leaking from the wreck.

Two members of search and rescue team in orange coastguard boat off the coast of Sicily

We're well into the second day of search and rescue operations for the six people still missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.

Here are some of the factors which make this a highly complex process:

  • The wreckage is currently 50m (165ft) below the surface of the water
  • Furniture and a "world of objects" are blocking access to the cabins of the yacht, hampering the divers' access
  • Divers can only spend 12 minutes below the surface of the water, meaning by the time they reach the Bayesian, they only have 10 minutes to search the wreck
  • The bridge of the yacht - the room where the captain controls the vessel - is full of electrical cables
  • Divers are unable to see inside the yacht , though a possible entry point could be through a 3cm (1.2in)-thick glass window
  • Specialist divers who are trained to work in small spaces have had to be flown in from Rome and Sardinia

Lord Deben says his friend Mike Lynch is "wonderfully kind and companionable"

Lord Deben, former Conservative MP John Gummer, describes his missing friend Mike Lynch as "a wonderfully kind and companionable" man.

"He is the kind of person who carries this enormously clever mind, but carries it so lightly, and is always interested in what others have to say and might contribute," he says in a statement.

"It is a very serious moment... for if we have lost him, we’ve lost a very wonderful man."

He adds: "It is one of the cruellest blows that could possibly be made if it turns out that he hasn’t survived because he had so much to give, and he was giving it.

"This is a man of outstanding ability, but also the sort of person whom we were all very, very fortunate to know."

Water conditions could have led to waterspout, says oceanographer published at 15:54 British Summer Time 20 August 15:54 BST 20 August

Dr Simon Boxall is a Senior Lecturer at Southampton University

Dr Simon Boxall is a senior lecturer at Southampton University

Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer from the University of Southampton, says "there's a lot still to be discovered" about what led to the sinking of the Bayesian.

Asked about reports the boat may have been hit by a waterspout , he tells the BBC they are "not normally dangerous" but that would depend on the intensity of the weather system.

Boxall says: "What's interesting is that we saw very light winds up until the time at which the yacht was hit.

"And then suddenly, the wind went from about three or four miles an hour to 30 or 40 miles an hour, and then dropped again. And that was on land.

"So it's a sort of precursor to there being a major sort of squall or even a waterspout that would have hit the ship."

The ocean to the north of Sicily is more than three degrees warmer than it should be at this time of year, he adds, creating a "perfect storm" for waterspouts to occur.

Captain Karsten Borner - a man with long white hair and glasses

The captain of the Dutch-flagged ship that rescued Bayesian passengers from the water before emergency services arrived has spoken again to Reuters.

Captain Karsten Borner has previously explained how he worked to keep his ship upright during the storm, before noticing the luxury yacht that had been behind his vessel had disappeared.

"I don't absolutely know what they did. I only know that they went flat with a mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes," Borner says.

He says the sea temperature, which meteorologists have told us was at an extreme high of 30C, is "way too hot for the Mediterranean, and this causes, for sure, heavy storms".

island Spirit

The 525e electric drive, designed to inspire.

Island Spirit is transitioning not only the sailing catamarans to E-Drive systems, we are also doing so with our commercial tour catamaran offerings under the Austhai Marine brand.

Therefore, we have developed a scalable E-Drive system that can be applied across all of our product offerings utilizing standard components, architecture and software.

In the development phase of the Island Spirit 525 we took into account designing for E-Drive from the very beginning. This covers many aspects of the design process including but not limited too:

  • Minimize the vessel weight through the exclusive use of composites and not use heavy marine plywood in the build.
  • Efficient hull design to minimize the power required to move the boat through the water.
  • Utilize commercially available EV technology
  • Design to over perform

How does all this play out in the system level design?  Well we are not at liberty to share all of the details of the design system as we hold those proprietary, we can share a fair amount of general information. The general E-Drive system is outlined below:

IS525 Electric Drive

The drive system has been designed to ensure that there is performance to spare, in doing so the system incorporates the following characteristics:

  • Powerful range extender that will charge the system at 55kW
  • Powerful drive motors with a 65kW (88 hp) rated power
  • Large E-drive system storage with 210kWh
  • Supplemental solar charging up to 4.8 kW

The design of the boat is very efficient.  It will only require only 37kW to power the boat at 8 knots giving sufficient run time in daily charter operations and unlimited range while running the range extender.

For further detailed discussion of the IS525 system level design, we are happy to share with prospective customer under nondisclosure.

Tributes paid to superyacht chef ‘whose smile lit up the room’

Recaldo Thomas was one of 10 members of crew aboard the Bayesian yacht when it started sinking

A body recovered near the Bayesian superyacht has been confirmed as Recaldo Thomas.

Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef, was part of the 10-member crew working on the Bayesian .

Tributes have been paid by friends and loved ones to the man whose “smile lit up the room”.

Gareth Williams, who knew the chef for 30 years, told the BBC: “I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.

“He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents’ house. He loved yachting, but he was tired.”

Rescue efforts for the six people still missing continued for a second day on Tuesday

On social media, one friend wrote: “An honour and a pleasure to have been your friend, it just wasn’t long enough….we had so much to conquer.

“Love to the Recaldo Thomas family, I am so sorry. Such a very special person for many of us, the laughter, the great kindness, the generosity, the love. He had so much to give.”

Another said: “Going to miss you so much Recaldo Thomas. Still finding this so hard to believe.”

This afternoon, three crew members who survived the incident were named as Leo Eppel, Leah Randall and Kaja Chichen.

Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, and Chris and Neda Morvillo are still missing.

“My very deepest condolences to the chef’s family as they formed a great friendship.”

Emergency services have ‘big choice to make’

Emergency teams trying to access the submerged Bayesian yacht will have to make “a big choice” as the rescue efforts intensify, a maritime diving and wreckage expert has said.

Bertrand Sciboz told the BBC: “I think 50 metres is a limit to dive with a certain category of professional divers, so you will need to dive with some kind of helmet and pipe and [be] connected to the surface for oxygen, and also for for speaking and hearing and telling what you see and and do.

“It’s always very difficult, and especially with a sailing vessel, because you’ve got rope everywhere, you’ve got a sail which is floating in the current, because we are in Mediterranean Sea and not in the English Channel.

“But the main thing, you know, it’s the fact that in those kind of conditions, it’s very hard to go inside the wreck, and they will have to have to make a big choice at one moment, of salvaging the whole wreck or rescuing the bodies.”

Neighbour ‘horrified’ to learn Mike Lynch is missing

A neighbour of Mike Lynch said she was “honestly horrified” when she learned he was missing after his Bayesian yacht sank in a tornado.

Ruth Leigh, of Pettistree, Suffolk, said she “knew they had the yacht”, but “couldn’t believe it” when she heard the news.

“I thought this can’t be right,” she said.

The 57-year-old author added: “It’s dreadful, it’s the worst news.”

She said they had been neighbours for around 15 years and that “right from the start [Mr Lynch] was a fantastic neighbour”.

“Even though he was incredibly wealthy and a very important person he never ever gave that impression,” said Ms Leigh.

“Whenever he met you he always remembers your name, he would chat to you, incredibly friendly and down to earth which we thought was a great quality. He was a really good neighbour.”

Rescue teams could be listening for timed banging noise

Rescue teams trying to access the submerged Bayesian yacht could be listening out for a timed banging noise, a senior university lecturer has said.

Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, who teaches mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University, said: “A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals.

“This is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year.”

Dr Souppez added the next 24 hours of the rescue operation were “crucial” and the chance of air pockets forming inside the vessel was “simply impossible to predict”.

CCTV captures Bayesian in the storm

Footage captured at 4.10am by a shipyard surveillance camera shows the Bayesian being caught in the storm.

Twenty-five minutes later, the yacht fires an emergency flare before it submerges under the waves.

Missing six feared trapped inside the boat

The Italian coastguard has confirmed it believes Mike Lynch and five others still missing are trapped inside the yacht.

Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesman for the coastguard, said officials had drawn this conclusion because of the lack of results by rescue teams outside the vessel and the speed at which they believe the yacht sank.

He said: “We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

Asked about the likelihood of them being alive, he replied: “Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not.”

Another survivor named by coastguard

Leo Eppel has been named among the survivors by the Italian coastguard.

Mr Eppel, Leah Randall and Katja Chicken were one of the 10 crew members aboard the Bayesian when it sank.

Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef, was confirmed dead by officials this afternoon.

Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, and Chris and Neda Morvillo are still missing.

Tributes made for ‘inspirational’ chef

Tributes for Recaldo Thomas have been made after the chef was confirmed as the body recovered near the Bayesian superyacht.

Eli Fuller, told the BBC: “He knew everybody and was friends with everybody. He’d always ask how you were doing, how your family was – he was always positive.

“Personality was very important in his job. The world’s richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after.”

Thomas was also called an inspiration to young black children by Mr Fuller. “The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world – it was important for our community.”

“Love to the Recaldo Thomas family, I am so sorry. Such a very special person for many of us, the laughter, the great kindness the generosity, the love. He had so much to give.”

Mediterranean’s weather becoming more dangerous

The Bayesian’s sinking is the latest sign that the weather in the Mediterranean is becoming more dangerous, experts say.

Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected storms more frequent.

Luca Mercalli, the president of Italy’s meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily was about 30C, almost three degrees more than normal, in the run up to the sinking.

“This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms,” he told Reuters.

Massimo Aramu, who runs the Akua sailing school on the coast near Rome, said he did not like navigating Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast around Sicily because there are “often critical situations with little warning”.

Last week, a storm similar to the one that sank the Bayesian hit the Balearics.

Giuliano Gallo, a former skipper who crossed the Atlantic, said the Mediterranean was becoming more like the Caribbean, with boats avoiding areas at certain times of the year.

“But things are less predictable in the Mediterranean,” he said.

Underwater vehicle helping divers search for missing passengers

Italian rescue workers are using a remotely operated underwater vehicle in their search for missing passengers on the Bayesian.

In a statement the coastguard said five patrol boats, one helicopter and divers had been working since the early hours of this morning.

Divers are still assessing the safety of the superyacht before they can enter and look for possible survivors.

Divers ‘can see nothing inside the yacht’

Rescue divers can see nothing inside the yacht from the outside and have only been able to inspect the Bayesian’s bridge deck.

Firefighter spokesman Luca Cari said divers had entered the yacht’s salon using a ladder and were trying to find the best way to advance safely.

“We located a glass window through which we could enter. But it is closed from the inside and three centimetres thick, so we have to be able to remove it so we can advance further inside,” he said.

According to the local rescue centre in Sicily, emergency divers found the wreck at a depth of 187ft.

Crew ‘should have woken guests and given them life jackets’ during storm

The crew of the Bayesian should have woken up guests and given them life jackets during the storm which sank the superyacht, a weather expert has said.

Luca Mercalli, one of Italy’s leading climate experts and president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said the crew should have paid more attention to weather warnings and prepared passengers accordingly.

Prof Mercalli said that although the waterspout which hit the vessel was not predictable, the crew should have been more vigilant. Italian authorities had issued a “yellow” and then a moderate weather alert.

He told The Telegraph: “I don’t know if there was anyone on board consulting the radar.

“Let’s say that if I had been on board, at the first sign of a thunderstorm I would have woken up all the occupants and been ready and alert with life jackets on until the storm was over.”

Prof Mercalli said the weather radar made it possible to estimate an intense thunderstorm within 15 to 30 minutes, even though it is impossible to know if the wind intensity will reach dangerous levels.

Bayesian ‘a small Costa Concordia’

A new image shows firefighters analysing yacht cutaways as the rescue mission continues.

Luca Cari, a firefighters’ spokesman, described the sunken Bayesian “as a small Costa Concordia” because of the challenges in access to find the missing people and the space restrictions.

“Inside the sailing ship the spaces are very small, and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to advance and also very difficult to find alternative routes,” he said.

Search for missing Bayesian passengers ‘very complicated’ because yacht is intact

The search for missing passengers of the Bayesian is “very complicated” because the superyacht is intact, according to a diver at the scene.

Marco Tilotta, a firefighter diver from Palermo, said the ÂŁ30 million vessel was lying on its side at a depth of 48 metres. He said divers were unable to gain access because of floating furnishings and other debris inside the yacht.

In his interview with Il Messaggero, he said: “It looked like a scenario similar to the Costa Concordia on a smaller scale. Unfortunately, these are very complicated searches.’’

Mike Lynch held garden party at Suffolk home following acquittal in fraud trial

Mike Lynch held a garden party at his Suffolk home following his acquittal in a fraud trial before embarking on his yacht trip in the Mediterranean. Mr Lynch brought together friends and local business leaders including Lord Deben and former deputy prime minister Thérèse Coffey for canapes at his 16th century manor house in rural Suffolk, a parish council leader has said.    Chair of the Pettistree parish council Sue Jones told The Telegraph that the British tech entrepreneur held the summer fête regularly until his extradition to the US last year on criminal fraud charges.  She said: “We were all very happy to see him back.” “He had just got out from under a number of years of stress and was just trying to start again. It’s quite hard to believe what has happened.”

Mike Lynch and others still inside Bayesian, says Italian coast guard

Mike Lynch and others are still believed to be inside the Bayesian, according to the Italian coast guard.

Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesman for the organisation, said this was because the yacht sank in just a few minutes, with search and rescue teams unable to find the missing bodies.

He said: “We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

“We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

Asked if there was any hope of finding the missing alive, he said: “Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be no.”

Clifford Chance says it is ‘deeply saddened’ by the sinking of the Bayesian

Clifford Chance, the law firm, said it is “deeply saddened” by the sinking of the Bayesian off the coast of Sicily.

Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, is missing following the incident.

A spokesman for the firm said: “We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda, who are among the missing.

“Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner thankfully survived the incident.

“Our thoughts extend to the other passengers and crew and all those affected.

“We have no further comment at this time.

“We, and the families, ask that their request for privacy is honoured during this period.”

Inside the ÂŁ30m superyacht

The Bayesian, previously called the Salute, was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi in consultation with Ron Holland Design.

Inside, the sleek, minimalist furnishings were designed by yacht designer RÊmi Tessier. The Bayesian, which accommodates 12 guests in its master, three double and two twin bedrooms, was furnished with a teak deck and beige sofas set against dark wood furnishings.

Thin brown pillars and miniature terracotta sculptures offered a Japanese influence, while a crescent canvas awning kept guests cool on the top deck.

The superyacht took home best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards 2008 and was also voted best sailing yacht over 45 metres at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.

Costa Concordia divers helping search

Divers who took part in the Costa Concordia rescue are on the same team searching for Bayesian survivors, The Telegraph understands.

In January 2012, the 114,000-tonne cruise liner carrying more than 4,000 passengers hit a submerged rock off the coast of Isola del Giglio near Tuscany, killing 32 people.

It became one of the largest maritime salvage operations in history, involving hundreds of engineers and drivers.

Some of those who took part in the search-and-rescue operation are on the same team scouring the Bayesian for six missing passengers, it is understood.

Water visibility is good, says fire department searching wreckage

Marco Tilotta, a fire department diver, has said water visibility is good at the site of the Bayesian wreckage.

He said divers are determined to get inside the vessel before the weather changes.

“We just finished the first dive, now we will do a briefing and continue throughout the day,’’ he said, according to the Giornale di Sicilia website.

“We checked the hull from the outside, visibility is good and now our goal is to go inside the boat.”

Mr Tilotta was one of the first divers who arrived at the scene of the wreck soon after it sank 50 metres off the coast of Porticello in Sicily on Monday.

Three survivors discharged from hospital

Three of the survivors from the Bayesian sinking were discharged from a hospital in Palermo this afternoon.

Charlotte Golunsky, her husband, James Emsley, and their baby daughter, Sofia, left the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in a black van via a back entrance.

They were accompanied by an officer from the British embassy, who covered the family’s faces with a jacket to hide them from a huddle of photographers.

Mother of one-year-old shares further details of incident

Dr Domenico Cipolla, director of the emergency department at Di Cristina Children’s Hospital, said Charlotte Golunski had told him further details about the sinking of the yacht.

He told RAI news: “The mother said while she was sleeping with her daughter, they found themselves in the water in just a few moments.

“She held the little girl tightly. The light was gone. For a few seconds the little girl slipped from her hands and she held her with her arms in the air. Within seconds they reached the yacht’s life raft.”

From a clinical point of view  he said they were fine, and receiving psychological support, he added.

Survivors speak of shock following incident

Charlotte Golunski, and her husband, James Emsley, who survived the Bayesian sinking along with their one-year-old daughter have told of their shock that they are alive.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, director of the emergency department at Di Cristina Children’s Hospital, told RAI news the couple had repeatedly said: “We don’t know how we are here alive, we are survivors.”

He added: “The parents alternate between moments when they are confident and others when they are sad for the fate of their missing travelling companions”.

“Until yesterday they had some hope and asked us for news. They are very distressed. They were all friends and knew each other. They are very sad about what happened. They said that Mark Lynch had organized this holiday with great enthusiasm.”

Missing 18-year-old Hannah Lynch was a student at west London’s Latymer Upper School

Latymer Upper School, a private school in west London, confirmed to The Telegraph that 18-year-old Hannah Lynch had been a student at the school.

A spokesperson for Latymer Upper School told The Telegraph: “We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.”

Ms Lynch was a student at the school from 2017 until 2024. She is believed to have received her A-level results last week and held an offer to study English at the University of Oxford.

The Telegraph understands Ms Lynch was a scholar at Latymer Upper School and regular prizewinner, receiving an award for outstanding academic achievement last year.

Mike Lynch and his wife Angela Lynch were also frequent donors to the school, contributing to Latymer Upper School’s bursary fund in 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Fisherman describes witnessing a ‘tornado’ on Monday morning

Giuseppe Cefalu, a local fisherman, said he saw a “tornado” close to the port of Porticello on Monday morning.

Mr Cefalu said he and his brother Fabio saw a flare in the sky at around 5am.

The pair aided efforts to locate people in the water after the yacht sank, but Mr Cefalu said he only saw cushions and a buoy.

He said weather conditions on the morning of the sinking were “fierce”, with “very strong” wind and rain.

One-year-old survivor of yacht sinking ‘slept well’ last night

The one-year-old baby, who survived the sinking of the Bayesian after her mother fought to prevent her child, Sofia, from drowning, slept peacefully in hospital last night.

Charlotte Golunski, 38, a senior associate at Invoke, Mr Lynch’s venture capital firm, yesterday told of how she kept her daughter alive after the superyacht was hit by a tornado.

The Oxford graduate was among guests on board the Bayesian to celebrate Mr Lynch’s acquittal in an $11 billion (£8.5 billion) fraud case in June.

Adnkronos, the Italian news agency, reported that Sofia was kept in the Giovanni di Cristina Children’s Hospital, in Palermo, last night as a precaution.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, head of emergency department said: “She slept all night.”

Team of divers conducting further search

A boat carrying a team of divers has left the port of Porticello, near Palermo on Sicily, for a further search near the site where the luxury yacht Bayesian sank.

A boat from Vigili del Fuoco - the Italian fire service - was also seen leaving the port at around 11.30am local time on Tuesday.

The fire brigade said the entrance to the yacht on the seabed is “complex” with planning under way to “open” easier access to it.

Meanwhile, local Nino Minado showed the PA news agency CCTV footage of the weather conditions on the morning the yacht sank.

Extreme heavy wind and rain appeared to batter Porticello, shaking the camera.

Team of psychologists supporting survivors

A team of psychologists from the Civil Protection Department has been made available to the survivors of the shipwreck, an Italian news agency reports.

Adnkronos reported that two psychologists from the local health service went to the Domina Zagarella hotel this morning to support survivors.

Lord Edward Llewellyn, British Ambassador to Italy, also met with the passengers.

Two other passengers named

Salvo Cocina, the Sicily civil protection chief, has confirmed that Chris Morvillo and his wife, Nada, are the two other missing Britons following the sinking of the Bayesian.

The Italian coast guard has recovered one body with six people still to be found in the wreckage of the Bayesian, now 165ft underwater on the seabed.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among seven feared dead after the ÂŁ30 million yacht sank as it moored half a mile off the coast of Sicily.

Climate change contributed to the weather that caused Bayesian to sink, claims expert

Prof Mercalli, one of Italy’s leading climate experts, said climate change had contributed to the weather phenomenon that caused the boat to sink.

He said: “The sea surface temperature around Sicily was about 30 degrees, which is almost three degrees higher than normal. That creates a huge source of energy that contributes to these storms.

“We can’t say this is all due to climate change, but we can say it has an amplifying effect.”

Prof Mercalli said the sinking of Mike Lynch’s luxury yacht was similar to the boating tragedy in which four people were killed on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy in May 2023.

“It was daylight, but the rapidity of the phenomenon left no room for manoeuvre,’’ he said of the Lake Maggiore accident.

Four people drowned including a former agent from Israel’s spy agency Mossad, two Italian intelligence officers and a Russian woman.

They were among 23 people aboard the small boat that set out to cruise the lake.

Leading climate expert says crew should have paid more attention to weather warnings

Luca Mercalli, one of Italy’s leading climate experts and president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said the crew of the Bayesian should have paid more attention to the weather warnings issued by Italian authorities before the tragedy occurred.

While noting the tornado that occurred off Sicily’s coast was not predictable, Professor Mercalli told The Telegraph the authorities had issued a “yellow” then a moderate weather alert and the crew should have been more vigilant of the changing weather conditions despite the darkness.

Prof Mercalli said: “I don’t know if there was anyone on board consulting the radar.

He said weather radar made it possible to estimate within 15 to 30 minutes the arrival of an intense thunderstorm, even though it is impossible to know if the wind intensity will reach dangerous levels.

The family of Stephen Chamberlain, co-defendant in the US trial of missing technology tycoon Mike Lynch, have described him as “a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend” following his death after being hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

In a statement released through Cambridgeshire Police, the family said: “Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend.

“He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible.

“He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“He will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of his loved ones.”

What could have made the superyacht sink?

Bayesian’s 237ft metal mast may have played a part in the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily, experts have suggested.

Key among potential reasons for the loss of the vessel will be its most striking feature – the aluminium mast.

Bayesian had the tallest aluminium mast in the world when it first took to the seas under her former name Salute. The record was overtaken last year when Jeff Bezos, the Amazon billionaire, launched his yacht, Koru.

The pressure of high winds on the mast could have helped tip the boat over in rough seas, experts have suggested.

Bayesian rescue operation ‘a small Costa Concordia’, says firefighter

The Bayesian rescue operation has been likened to “a small Costa Concordia” by a member of the firefighter department.

Luca Cari said the challenges in accessing the vessel were similar to those posed by the cruise ship that sank off the island of Giglio in 2012.

He told ANSA news agency: “It is a small Concordia. Inside the sailing ship the spaces are very small and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to advance, and it is also very difficult to find alternative routes.”

So far divers have only been able to inspect the bridge deck and the team has not found any bodies in that area.

Details of the Bayesian superyacht

‘we didn’t see it coming’, says bayesian yacht crew member.

A crew member of the Bayesian superyacht has said the crew didn’t see the tornado coming.

James Catfield was named by Italian media as one of fifteen crew members and passengers who were rescued from the sinking ship after the waterspout hit the vessel.

Speaking from a hospital in the town of Termini Imerese, he told La Repubblica: “We didn’t see it coming.”

He didn’t comment any further on the incident which took place on Monday morning.

Superyacht sinking in bad weather ‘unprecedented’, says maritime expert

A vessel the size of the Bayesian superyacht sinking in bad weather is “unprecedented”, according to a maritime expert.

Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the tornado over water, known as a waterspout, that struck the 184ft yacht with 22 people on board should not have caused it to sink.

He told GB News: “It’s sort of unprecedented, really, to have a vessel of that size, being certified and commercially operated, to suffer such a significant event in weather that was pretty severe by all accounts, but should have been within the limits of the vessel itself.”

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among seven passengers and crew feared dead after the ÂŁ30 million yacht sank as it moored half a mile off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning.

Mr Lynch, dubbed Britain’s Bill Gates, had been acquitted of fraud in a San Francisco courtroom in June, having been found not guilty on all counts of inflating the value of Autonomy, the company he sold to the US tech giant Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for £8.6 billion.

He and others including Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, were on a trip to celebrate his acquittal. They are among those missing.

Yacht ‘practically intact’ on seabed, says diver

The Bayesian superyacht is “practically intact” on the seabed, according to a diver inspecting the wreckage.

In an interview with the Italian daily, Il Messaggero, Marco Tilotta, a firefighter diver from Palermo, said the ÂŁ30 million yacht was lying on its side at a depth of 48 metres, but he said divers were unable to gain access because of floating furnishings and other debris inside the yacht.

He said: “When we went down to the water around 5.30am, we found a yacht that was practically intact.

“It is resting on its side on the starboard side. It has no gashes, no signs of impact.’’

Did Bayesian superyacht’s 237ft mast cause it to sink?

Bayesian’s 237ft metal mast may have played a part in the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily , experts have suggested.
