The superyacht currently known as Kalizma has quite a history. It was commissioned and built in 1906 as a private luxury yacht for Robert Steward, who was a Scottish estate owner and former owner of Kirkliston Distillery. Back then, it received the name of S/Y Minona, but that wasn’t the only name it had.

Minona also served in the British Royal Navy in both World Wars, and, after they ended, she returned to her day-to-day “duty” as a private yacht. In 1947 it was named both Cortynia and S/Y Oddyseia. After a significant refit between 1954 and 1955, when its engine converted from steam to diesel, it ended up in Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor’s name.

“ I have dreams of living with Elizabeth [Taylor] on the Kalizma ,” Welsh actor Richard Burton used to say of the superyacht, “ and never living on land again .”

Burton purchased the yacht for a reported $220,000 as a gift for Taylor, after they chartered it to sail around Portofino, Italy, in May 1967. They renamed it Kalizma after their three daughters, Kate, Liza, and Maria. He reportedly spent twice as much on remodeling, bringing in new interiors with the help of Arthur Barbosa. After the refit, it had an impressive art collection that featured works by Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso. It was also the place Burton chose when he presented Taylor with expensive jewelry, including the world-famous 69.42-carat diamond, now known as the Taylor-Burton diamond.

After Burton and Taylor, the superyacht had several other owners (and names), including Vijay Mallya, the former owner of the Formula 1 Sahara Force India team.

Business magnate Shirish Saraf, founder of Samena Capital, is its latest owner. He purchased the classic yacht in 2019 at an auction. But when he bought it, it was in a very poor state, and in 2020 it underwent a major restoration to bring it back to its original glory, with Saraf paying four more times for the remodeling than the yacht itself. “ When I sit on the sandbanks and watch the Kalizma, I could spend hours just staring at her ,” Shirish Saraf told. “ It’s like she grows on you… she almost talks to you. I’m in love with her. ”

Originally designed by Alan Olford, it has a length of 50.29 m (165 ft) and a beam of 6.34 m (20.8 ft). Powered by two Cummins diesel engines, it has a top speed of 12 kn, boasting a maximum range of 3,500 nautical miles at cruising speed. It can accommodate up to 10 guests in five rooms, with nine crew members available.

“ Here is a boat that has been through two world wars, has had anyone and everyone stay on it, has survived everything, when not one other yacht of that pedigree has managed to. And you have to think: why? ” says Saraf. “ There must be some soul, some energy that’s different .”

Almost the entire ship needed restoration, including its engines, generators, and stabilizers. The main structural changes included opening up the galley to give it a spacious feel, as well as creating a crew space. The top deck spa pool was replaced with a large lounge area, and the water toys (which include two tenders, two jet skis, a wakeboard, and waterskis) are now located on board.

The interior has also changed, giving it a modern feel with brighter colors and light furniture. Alessandro Ortenzi, the interior designer, opted for “ grey shades, champagne white, and neutral tones ” for the interior, with deep blue accessories for the outdoor areas. The master cabin also has custom-made furniture, and a new lighting system, as well as white and beige shades.

Burton and Taylor weren’t the only famous names to have been on it. Clint Eastwood and Rex Harrison have climbed its decks, as well as Brad Pitt, who reportedly tried to buy the superyacht for himself. Several members of royal families like Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, also set foot onboard Kalizma. With quite a history behind it, all the guests onboard surely will feel like royalty.

If the Kalizma could write her memoir, the 114-year-old classic motor yacht would time-travel to her youth with The Royal Navy in World War I and II and then her betwixt era when actor Richard Burton bought it in 1967 with his lady love Liz Taylor and named her "Kalizma" after their children Kate, Liza and Maria. Then came an era of decadence when Vijay Mallya restored this 1906-built cruiser in 2006 to make her among the finest vintage luxury motor yachts. Its present owner has refitted and restored the vessel under the doting eye of Captain Surendra Saini, an ex-Navy man.

The award winning 50.29m classic yacht Kalizma was delivered to her owners in 1906 by Ramage & Ferguson. Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of G.L. Watson & Co., while Della Tecnica is responsible for her interior design.

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium / teak superstructure she features a 6.32m beam and a 3.6m draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 278 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Launched in April 1906 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in June 1906.

Exterior Design

The hull of the Kalizma, painted in black, contrasts with the rich varnished woods that accentuate her superstructure. Accommodation

Kalizma's layout ensures that up to ten guests are accommodated in style across her five cabins, each one a testament to the yacht's rich heritage. The owner's suite, located on the main deck forward, features custom-made furniture and a new lighting system that creates an intimate mood, perfect for unwinding after a day of ocean adventure. The master cabin has been completely refreshed, with refined details and sophisticated pieces from Italian artisans, ensuring that every element aligns with the yacht's classic nautical theme.

Below deck, guests will find a full-width suite equipped with a refurbished bathroom that includes a shower with gold fittings. This bathroom is shared with another double cabin. Additionally, this area includes a study, providing a quiet space for work or relaxation.

Aft of the engine room, there are two more staterooms. One stateroom features a shower room, while the other boasts a newly refurbished bathroom with an Edwardian cast-iron bath. These accommodations are situated next to the library/TV lounge, offering a place for entertainment and leisure.

She is also capable of carrying up to 10 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Powered by 1 x Cummins (D2452MLE) 250hp engines, motor yacht Kalizma is capable of reaching a top speed of 12 knots, and comfortably cruises at 10 knots. With her 33,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 3,500 nautical miles at 10 knots.

How did they do it?

Minona, later known as Kalizma, was a luxury yacht commissioned at the height of the "Golden Age." Robert Stewart, a successful businessman and Vice Commodore of the Royal Eastern Yacht Club, sought a vessel that embodied elegance & luxury. Designed by G.L. Watson in 1904 and built by Ramage & Ferguson in 1906, she was a marvel of her time.

Ramage & Ferguson put together her structure in Leith, Scotland. The design, inspired by the sleek lines of clipper ships, was not meant for racing but for pure luxury.

World War I & II

In October 1914, now under George Coats' ownership, Minona was requisitioned by the British Royal Navy. She served as an auxiliary patrol vessel, equipped with armaments - 2-6 pound guns & a 6pdr AA. On 6 June 1919, she was discharged from wartime duties.

Between 1919 & 1939, Minona saw ownership by notable individuals, including Major Andrew Coats & Sir Charles MacIver. These years were marked by her service to esteemed yacht clubs and racing associations.

By the end of 1939, she became H.M.S. Minona, serving as the flagship for His Majesty's Deep Sea Rescue Tug Services at Campbeltown, Scotland, until December 1945.

After her wartime service, Minona resumed her role as a luxury yacht. In 1947, she was renamed Cortynia, then S/Y Oddyseia. A significant refit between 1954 & 1955 saw her engine converted from steam to diesel.

In the mid-1960s, Richard Burton acquired the yacht as a gift for Elizabeth Taylor. Renamed Kalizma, an acronym for their daughters' names - Kate, Liza & Maria - she underwent a significant refit. Arthur Barbosa redesigned her interiors, adding an exquisite art collection & extensive library.

When Shirish Saraf bought Kalizma in 2019, she was a shadow of her former self. An auction in Sri Lanka during the monsoon season sealed the deal. Aashim Mongia, project manager at West Coast Marine Yacht Services, described her as "a dead ship." It was clear that restoring her would be a massive undertaking.

Of course, Saraf hadn’t initially set his heart on winning the auction. The yacht was about to be taken over by the insurance company due to unpaid bills. Saraf’s spur-of-the-moment decision led to a two-year renovation journey that saw him spend four times more on the refit than the purchase price.

The build began at a boatyard in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Due to limited infrastructure & the boatyard going into liquidation, progress was slow. After assessment of the yacht’s condition, it was revealed that while her steel was reasonable, the engines, generators & stabilizers required significant work.

By October 2019, a full team of experienced carpenters & painters from Bombay was flown in to expedite the process. Serendipitously, by the time the 2020 pandemic set in, 95% of the work was completed, thanks to this action.

Additional craftsmen from Spain, Portugal & Italy joined the project, focusing on various elements such as mast work, woodwork, interior design & high-end polishing. Pandemic restrictions added further hurdles, requiring new port access passes every two days & strict quarantining. The team removed the spa pool to enhance stability, aiming to regain RINA classification. This task required adding ballast & conducting numerous tests. Kalizma is now one of the world’s oldest RINA-classified yachts.

The main structural changes included opening up the galley & creating a proper crew mess. The interiors were transformed with lighter tones, removing dark mahogany for a brighter feel. Alessandro Ortenzi’s interior design used grey shades, champagne white, & neutral tones, accented with modern colours like violet.

Channel the glamour of old-school Hollywood on your next sailing holiday by cruising on the historic boat that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Named Kalizma, the luxury superyacht first let down her sails in 1906.

The 45m- (148ft) long vessel went on to serve in both World Wars under the Royal Navy before being ushered into the celebrity world, hosting Taylor and Burton's A-list pals and members of royalty. 

Now, in the latest chapter of the vessel's colourful life, she's available for charter via  yacht-hire firm  SamBoat . 

Prices start at €19,300 (£16,400/$20,800) to charter Kalizma from her base in Valletta, Malta, with a skipper in tow.

The vessel, built by Scottish yacht builders Ramage and Ferguson, was originally commissioned as a private yacht for a businessman. 

In World War One, the yacht - then called HMS Minona - served in the Auxiliary Patrol Fleet of the British Royal Navy. Almost two decades later, she was used throughout World War Two as a base ship for the Deep Sea Rescue Service in Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. 

Taylor and Richard - a couple that famously married and divorced twice - chartered the boat on a trip to the western Mediterranean in 1967, according to the yacht's brochure.

The Hollywood actors, who co-starred in the 1963 film Cleopatra and the 1966 movie Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, 'fell in love' with the boat during the trip. They went on to purchase it and rename it Kalizma after their daughters Kate, Liza and Maria.

On the lower deck, there are four guest cabins with bathrooms, as well as crew accommodation. Moving up to the main deck, you'll find a bar and salon, a dining room and a kitchen. Continuing upwards, the owner's suite is found on the upper deck (or boat deck) along with a stylish outdoor terrace with a dining table and a lounge area. 

Meanwhile, the upper bridge deck is home to the captain's cabin, the chef's cabin and another bathroom.

She also houses two tender boats as well as a variety of water toys, from jet skis to water skiing equipment. For those wanting to explore the underwater world during their cruise, there is also snorkelling equipment and diving gear onboard.

A Sonos music system and smart HD televisions with Netflix and Amazon Prime offer more entertainment.

The luxury yacht KALIZMA is a classic vessel that has been beautifully restored to offer luxurious stays on board. She was used in both the World Wars, and was bought by Richard Burton for Elizabeth Taylor, and named after their children, Kate, Liza and Maria. Built in 1906, she was lovingly restored in 2006 and can accommodate 10 guests in 5 cabins (4 doubles and 1 single). She has received her last refit in 2021.

Designed by G.L. Watson and built by Ramage & Ferguson, The Kalizma was one of the first steam powered yachts to have electric lighting. She served as Auxiliary Patrol Yacht during WW1, after which she competed in races in the UK and USA. During WW2, she was responsible for saving lives of crewmen from over 1100 vessels that were downed in conflict before being discharged of her duties in 1946.

Richard Burton is said to have bought the KALIZMA as a gift to Elizabeth Taylor after she earned an Academy award for her performance in "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf" and it is on this vessel that he presented her with a 69 carat diamond that was subsequently named the Taylor-Burton Diamond.

The KALIZMA's interior is cozy, with a large salon that boasts a comfortable sofa and armchairs around a coffee table and facing a TV. Other chairs are placed here and there in this area, allowing for separate conversations as well as large groups. A large dining room seats 10/12 guests in comfort and style.

This 46-meter motor yacht is the oldest operating yacht in the world and has a history spanning over 110 years. She was completely refitted in 2016 and 2020. The interior has been “rebuilt” and looks like new, and all technical systems are completely upgraded. KALIZMA is famous for having been purchased in 1967 by Richard Burton, who bought her for Elizabeth Taylor. The yacht was named KALIZMA in honor of Burton’s daughters Kate, Liza and Maria.

General Overview

KALIZMA charter motoryacht has more than 110 years of history and carries strong emotions: just walking in you will feel piece of the word crystallized by the video camera acting by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. This iconic yacht offer accomodation for 10 guests into three double cabins and two twin cabins.

Available in the Mediterranean from May 2023.

KALIZMA charter motoryacht interiors remember the first owners Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton; their pictures are hanged on the wall of the main deck to welcome guests onboard one of the oldest motoryacht in the world in operation. Notwithstanding the very recent total refit in 2020, the present Owner wanted to maintain the artistic atmosphere gained from the classic style, soft colors of  couches and forniture in contrast with the dark wood walls and many details of a fancy era. There is plenty of seating areas for guests to enjoy and relax. The main salon has ample seating for guests.

10 guests sleeping: The master cabin enjoys stunning views from it’s elevated position, occupying the entire upper deck. The lower accommodation deck is separated into two areas, and has a double and a twin cabin forward, and a double and a twin cabin aft. All cabins have en-suite bathrooms.

The deck features a variety of areas for the guests to relax. Al fresco entertainment and dining is available on the bridge deck with a large dining table where guests can enjoy a shaded lunch.

MYBA Terms: The Charter Fee includes the charter of the yacht with all its equipment in working order, tools, stores, cleaning material and basic consumable stores for engine-room, deck and cabins, etc., the crew’s wages, food and the insurance of the yacht for marine risk and third party claims and the crew for employer’s liability insurance. The Charterer will be charged extra, at cost to the yacht, for all other expenses. These include fuel for the yacht, fuel for the ski-boats or other tenders, food for the charterers, wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks for the Charterers, other consumable stores, berthing dues and other harbour charges away from the yacht’s own berth, including pilotage fees and charges for water and/or electricity taken from the shore, laundry, telephone, fax or telex via Satcom, Radio Telephone or telex costs, hire costs of special equipment placed on board at the request of the Charterer and crew gratuities. Prices exclude VAT (if applicable). VAT calculation depends on the embarkation port' country and on the cruising area. Charters shorter than a week are also available, depending on the date.

Celebrity divorces last longer than celebrity marriages, and perhaps afford the public more sheer entertainment. Hearing about the clashing of egos, the mutual narcissism, the profligacy — it all makes us rather relieved to be living our littler, more anonymous lives.

“It’s easy to get into a marriage,” a Californian lawyer said, rubbing his hands with glee, “and very difficult to get out of one.” Love curdles into hatred, and soon enough it’s like the Wild West.

But all these examples are as nothing compared with the mother and father of all celebrity couples, the opulent and turbulent Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton , who married and divorced each other twice. For the record, m. 1964 in the Mexican Consulate in Montreal, div. 1974 in Switzerland; m. 1975 in the jungle in Botswana, div. 1976 in Haiti.

Michael Wilding, forty, whom Taylor, still not quite twenty, married on the rebound from Hilton, didn’t last long and was reduced to becoming a waiter in a restaurant in Brighton. “Liz cut off his balls,” Stewart Granger said succinctly. He was replaced by Mike Todd, who showered Taylor with jewels. Their relationship lasted 414 days, brief enough for disillusion not to set in.

It’s likely Taylor would not for much longer have tolerated the kind of husband who inspected her filming schedules, expected to be granted approval of her wardrobe, her shoes and hats. Todd phoned her incessantly if they were apart. “I know what time you break for lunch and I’ll call you then, and I’ll know when you wrap up the day’s work and I’ll call you then.” (Todd was killed in a plane crash in 1958.)

Taylor wasn’t a widow for long – in May 1959 she married Todd’s friend Eddie Fisher, who wooed her with ten dresses from Dior, ten from Yves Saint Laurent, a Jaguar car, fur-lined coats and a $325,000 chalet in Gstaad. Taylor was indignant he didn’t fancy being generous, or as she saw it, chivalrous, during their divorce, especially when she discovered the $250,000 emerald necklace and an emerald-encrusted Bulgari mirror, in the shape of an asp, she’d been given for her thirtieth birthday, had been charged to her account. “I probably paid it,” Taylor said resignedly.

So, one way and another, Burton knew what was going to be expected of him – diamond rings and bracelets, including the thirty-three carat Krupp Diamond and what became known as the Burton-Taylor Diamond, a 69.42-carat rock, which when out of the bank vault had to be accompanied by armed guards. There were Picasso and Monet oil paintings; the Peregrina Pearl, once presented by Philip of Spain to Mary Tudor in 1554; boutiques in Paris; private jets and yachts; heaps of Neiman Marcus minks and furs, which as Burton said in his diary perpetuated “the legend of immense wealth and distant unattainability which is the very stuff of glamour.”

Though intended as joint investments, everything went Taylor’s way during the marital break-ups. What she didn’t grab the first time, she made sure she received the second time. Lawyers and accountants (the undisputed victors) spent years setting up and then dismantling holding companies in Bermuda, registering companies in Nassau, opening numbered accounts in Geneva.

If Taylor always fought over material things – possessions; the spoils – it’s because greed was an indication of her strength. She was never less than robust, definite. And what Taylor gave to Burton, whom before they met was chiefly a Shakespearean stage actor, was lasting fame, which in the end is a gift greater than rubies.
