CRUISE SHIP RESCUES YACHT

Three vessels, including a P&O cruise ship, came to aid a yacht that found itself in distress off the coast of Fiji. One of the passengers was already deceased, while the other two needed medical attention.

Cruise Ship Rescues Yacht

Twelve hours after the distress call, the cruise ship P&O Pacific Explorer was the first to arrive on the scene at 1 a.m. on September 25. The yacht, Second Life, was found with a broken mast amid challenging weather conditions.

Though the Explorer managed to transfer one of the yacht’s crew onboard, the other passenger couldn’t be moved until hours later. “Due to conditions and the comparative size of the Pacific Explorer, assisting the remaining people onboard the yacht isn’t possible,” passenger Ali Christ told the New Zealand Herald .

Two other vessels joined the recovery operation: the Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) patrol boat Savenaca and the Beast, a private vessel owned by Sir Michael Hill. By the same day afternoon, the patrol boat had boarded the 12-meter yacht and picked up the remaining survivor.

At around 4 p.m., the cruise ship with 2,000 passengers onboard was given the green light to proceed to Suva, Fiji, its original destination.

Spanning several hours, the rescue was described as a difficult operation. “RFNS Savenaca finally arrived this morning carrying one survivor and the remains of the sailor that tragically lost his life at sea. It has been a challenging rescue given the conditions and weather at sea at the time and it was rather unfortunate that a life was lost,” read the Republic of Fiji Navy’s post on Facebook .

The two survivors, including the deceased passenger, have been taken to Fiji while consular services and the New Zealand Police have been alerted.

One dead as cruise ship comes to aid of NZ yacht in distress

The crew of a New Zealand-flagged yacht has been offloaded, 12 hours after sending a mayday signal in the waters south of Fiji.

The small yacht was first intercepted by P&O cruise ship the Pacific Explorer at 1am this morning.

The 2000-passenger pleasure cruiser was repositioning from Auckland to Suva in the Fijian islands when it diverted to the distress signal.

The New Zealand-flagged sailing vessel Second Life appeared to have a broken sail and the crew required medical assistance.

One crew member was winched aboard the cruise ship, while two others remained onboard, unable to be moved.

Due to rough weather, the cruise ship was unable to launch small tenders, the Pacific Explorer ship remaining at a safe distance and waiting for the Fijian navy to conduct a recovery operation for the sailing ship.

RFNS patrol boat Savenaca intercepted the immobilised yacht after midday. Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) sailors could be seen boarding the 12-metre yacht via dirigible and removing bags from the craft.

Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) confirmed that two survivors were recovered from the vessel, while “sadly one person has died as a result of an incident involving a yacht off Fiji yesterday evening”.

RFN picked up the remaining survivor this afternoon, in addition to the crewmember who was winched onto the Pacific Explorer.

“This was a challenging search and rescue operation in tough conditions,” said a spokesperson for RCCNZ. “Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre wants to acknowledge the work of the Rescue Coordination Centre, Fiji in leading coordination of the rescue efforts.”

Both the survivors are being taken to Fiji, as is the body of the deceased. New Zealand Police and consular services have been notified.

Cruise passengers reported that the Pacific Explorer continued on its course to Fiji at around 2pm local time.

A second response vessel in the area, The Beast, a privately-owned vessel belonging to Sir Michael Hill, also diverted to assist shortly after midday.

A spokeswoman for Carnival Australia, the parent company of cruise operator P&O, said the Pacific Explorer had been first to respond to a call for assistance via the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding,” they said.

Owing to the poor conditions, the rescue of remaining crew by the cruise line was not possible, but the Pacific Explorer was reportedly in touch with those aboard the Second Life throughout the evening.

“Guests will be kept up to date with any necessary itinerary adjustments as Pacific Explorer renders assistance to those in distress.”

The New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre said that one of the yacht crew was now onboard the Pacific Explorer receiving medical assistance.

“Due to conditions and the comparative size of the Pacific Explorer, assisting the remaining people onboard the yacht isn’t possible.”

Passenger Ali Gilchrist Gilchrist told the  Herald  that the cruise ship had now left the scene and no other crew were taken aboard the ship.

“RCC NZ requested we monitor the yacht from a distance, as it is unsafe for us to get the [remaining crew] off the yacht in their condition,” she said.

The RFN released the cruise ship from observation duties around 4pm and it was now headed towards Port Denarau.

Cruise passenger John McFarlane photographed a rescue and recovery being conducted via navy launch.

“The launch from the Fijian warship went back across, we’re not yet clear on the offloaded passengers’ condition, however,” he said.

The Pacific Explorer is currently on an eight-day itinerary from Auckland with 2000 guests, mostly New Zealanders and Australians.

She was due to arrive in Suva, Fiji on Monday morning.

The 12-metre yacht, which bears the lettering Second Life on its hull, is a New Zealand-flagged ship, last seen in Nadi Bay, Fiji on September 21.

One dead as cruiseship diverts for high sea rescue

A Pāpāmoa family on a cruise to Fiji found themselves thrust into a maritime emergency this week, their holiday taking an unexpected and sombre turn.

A stricken yacht, one of its masts broken and its crew in peril, had called out for help.

Three New Zealanders on board the yacht were seriously injured on Sunday night after being hit by the broken mast off the coast of Fiji. Sadly, one of the three aboard deceased before the cruise ship arrived at the scene.

Pāpāmoa resident Dyanne Edwards and her family were booked on the P&O Pacific Explorer cruise to Fiji.

Excited to be finally going on a cruise following the restrictive years of Covid, Dyanne posted to her Facebook page, sharing the family adventure with friends who enjoyed the updates. She mentioned two metre waves, and then a couple of days into the cruise, on Sunday night, everything changed.

“The captain has just received a mayday call and has been asked by the RCC New Zealand to alter course and go assist,” wrote Dyanne.

She watched along with other passengers as the incident unfolded, with the cruise ship making its way to the yacht with its broken mast just south-west of Nadi.

The Pacific Explorer disembarked from Auckland on September 22 for its eight day round trip journey around Fiji before returning to Auckland on September 30.

Formerly known as the Dawn Princess the cruise ship can hold a maximum capacity of 2,395 people.

Dyanne says the cruise ship had to cancel the Suva stop.

“We got told at 7pm that RCC NZ had asked us to detour west due to a mayday call.”

She says by then the waves were four to five metres high and rough “but sea sickness tablets are great”.

The captain managed to locate the troubled vessel and one of the passengers rescued was taken on board.

“One person was rescued off the yacht in the early hours this morning. The fact that they got the first person off was amazing,” says Dyanne.

She says one person had to remain onboard the stricken yacht due to their condition.

“Due to the limited mobility of the second person it was not safe enough for them to remove the second person.”

Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Co-ordination Centre says one person was transferred to the cruise for medical treatment, but more help was needed.

"Two further support vessels are expected later today [Monday], one at about midday and another at 4pm," a spokesperson says.

"Support from the vessels is needed to assist the other people on-board the yacht as, due to conditions and the comparative size of the Pacific Explorer, assisting the remaining people on-board the yacht isn't possible."

RCC NZ requested that the Pacific Explorer cruise ship monitor the yacht from a distance. The two other vessels that had responded to Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre also arrived at the scene - the Beast and the Savenca - a Fijian naval vessel.

“We had to stay near the yacht until the Fiji warship arrived and a 40 metre super yacht,” says Dyanne. “Two people rescued and another unfortunately was deceased.”

Due to the rescue, the Pacific Explorer missed their Suva port and passengers had a day on the ship before heading on to Port Denarau.

“Both the survivors are being taken to Fiji, as is the body of the deceased. Consular services have been notified,” says a RCCNZ spokesperson.

"Continuing our long-standing practice of assisting mariners at sea, we can confirm Pacific Explorer supported the rescue of a distressed yacht early this morning south-west of Nadi, Fiji,” says a P and O Cruises spokesperson.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests on board for their understanding.”

Cruise ship Pacific Explorer makes second dramatic mayday rescue

Thomas Bywater

A Kiwi cruise ship homeported out of Auckland has made a second mayday rescue in as many weeks.

The Pacific Explorer was involved in a mayday rescue overnight, en route from New Caledonia to Vanuatu.

The cruise ship responded to a distress call 10 hours north of Noumea, on Thursday night, as the closest ship in the area.

Passengers say they encountered a capsized small ship, with a single sailor on the hull.

Captain Alan Nixon announced last night, at around 8.45pm, that the Pacific Explorer had “altered course in a northwesterly direction and is responding to a mayday call received by the Noumea MRCC”.

Passengers were told that other ships were responding and that they would only resume course for Lifou if another vessel was better suited to respond.

Maritime law says the closest ship must respond in an emergency.

Operators Carnival Australia confirmed they were aware of the incident, saying “a man was rescued from his upturned vessel just before 7am”.

New Caledonia Marine Rescue Coordination Centre were contacted for comment. A French navy aircraft, a Dassault Falcon Guardian, was seen overheard, as part of the search and rescue coordinated out of New Caledonia.

The sole occupant was later named as Australian ocean rower Tom Robinson, 24, who was on a cross-Pacific record attempt .

This emergency response is the second attended by the Pacific-based cruise liner in as many weeks .

A man was rescued from a capsized yacht, 10 hours north of Nomea, by crew of Carnival Cruise ship Pacific Explorer.

On Sunday, September 24, passengers sailing from Auckland were told that they were diverting to a distress signal of a New Zealand-registerd pleasure yacht, south of Fiji.

One crewmember of the 12-metre sailing ship the Second Life, 73-year-old Clive Nothling of Russell, was killed by the boom of the small vessel. Two other people were rescued by the Fijian Navy and crew of the Carnival Australia cruise liner.

Nothlings’ widow Robyn told the Herald she was “heartbroken”.

“He was a very special, strong man. He was known for being a very safe and competent sailor. This was a freak accident,” she said.

At the time the Pacific Explorer could only winch one of the three sailors to safety, due to rough conditions and fears for the yacht’s safety.

They remained with the yacht at a safe distance until the RFNS patrol boat Savenaca could attend the scene from Fiji.

Carnival thanked captain Nixon and the ship’s crew “for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding” following the rescue.

“This is the second time in two weeks Pacific Explorer has rendered assistance to a vessel in distress in the South Pacific, continuing our long-standing practice of assisting those in distress at sea.”

Pacific Explorer is currently on the return leg of a nine-day round-trip voyage from Auckland, carrying 2000 guests.

One dead, two seriously injured onboard New Zealand yacht off Fiji

One member of a New Zealand yachting crew has died and two more are seriously injured after being struck by a broken mast off the coast of Fiji.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Fiji said the crew sent a mayday distress call near Nadi at around 9pm last night.

More from Newshub

"One of the yacht's mast broke and the crew got hit by it," a spokesperson said.

Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed that one person died after being hit by the mast.

An Australian cruise ship, the Pacific Explorer, diverted its route to help the yacht.

But a Maritime NZ said the cruise ship was too big and could only pick up one of the survivors for medical treatment.

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises, which owns the Pacific Explorer, said it was proud of the crew for supporting the rescue.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding," they said.

The other survivor was picked up later in the day by a Fijian Navy vessel, the Savenaca.

The body of the deceased crew member is being taken to Fiji on a third ship.

Maritime NZ thanked Fiji's Rescue Coordination Centre who organised the rescue, along with the three vessels that provided aid.

"It was a challenging search and rescue operation in tough conditions," a spokesperson said.

Maritime NZ said the police had been notified of the crew member's death.

08 July 2024Coast Guard Medevacs

On July 8, 2024, soon after the departure from Auckland NZ, the ship returned back to port to facilitate a medevac of a young male passenger in a serious condition.

The incident occurred ~03:50 AM New Zealand time (~15:50 UTC). The ship contacted the local authorities, prompting a response from Hato Hone St John (aka St John Ambulance of New Zealand/charitable organization providing public healthcare services). The man was assessed and transported to Auckland City Hospital (Grafton) in serious condition.

The emergency evacuation was managed by RCCNZ (Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand) as RCCNZ determined it was necessary to turn the vessel back toward Port Auckland to facilitate the medevac.

A police team from Auckland Maritime Unit ( Marine Rescue Centre) assisted in the transfer from the ship to the hospital, ensuring the patient received prompt medical attention.

The incident occurred in the beginning of the 9-day "Pacific Island Hopper Cruise" (itinerary July 8-17, roundtrip from Auckland) visiting Noumea (Jul 11), Lifou Island (Jul 12), Port Vila/Efate Island (Jul 13) and Mystery Island (Jul 14).

24 September 2023Boat Rescue

On September 24, 2023, while en route from Auckland to Fiji's Denarau Island, Pacific Explorer responded to a mayday/distress call from a small sail yacht with a broken mast.

To assist the yacht, the ship (mastered by Captain Alan Nixon) changed course and rescued one survivor from the sea. He was provided with urgent medical attention on board.

Due to adverse weather conditions and the significant size difference between both vessels, it was deemed unsafe to proceed with the rescue of the yacht's remaining crew. Nevertheless, the ship maintained radio communication with the boat throughout the evening.

The Royal Fijian Navy released the cruise vessel from observation duties at ~4 pm NZ time (~3 am UTC), allowing it to resume the voyage and continue toward Port Denarau/Nadi.

On September 25th, RCCNZ (Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand) confirmed the death of one of the sailors.

Carnival Australia and P&O Australia expressed gratitude and admiration for the Pacific Explorer's crew and their Captain, acknowledging their courage and determination during this emergency.

13 December 2022Crew / Passenger Deaths

(overboard) On December 13, 2022, at around midnight, the ship, en route from Melbourne to Kangaroo Island, reported a missing female passenger presumed overboard.

The 23-year-old woman's body was eventually found. Reportedly, she went missing when the ship was navigating approx 45 mi / 70 km off Cape Jaffa (South Australia's southeastern coastline). Pacific Explorer immediately turned around and started a search and rescue operation assisted by three Coast Guard helicopters coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The body was located at ~7 am (~8 pm UTC) on Dec 14th.

The incident occurred during the 4-day "Tribute To The King Cruise" (itinerary Dec 12-16, roundtrip from Melbourne) that visited only Penneshaw (Kangaroo Island). The visit to Penneshaw was canceled.

July 2022Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(Coronavirus) On the morning of July 18, 2022, the ship docked in homeport Sydney (NSW Australia) with ~100 COVID cases (out of ~3000 passengers plus crew) onboard.

During the voyage, all COVID-positive tourists were quarantined to their staterooms marked with red tags (on the cabin doors) to keep the service staff from coming inside. In Sydney Harbour, all disembarking passengers had to provide a negative rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2.

The outbreak occurred during a 9-day "Barrier Reef Discovery Cruise" (itinerary July 9-18, roundtrip from Sydney) with visiting ports in Queensland Australia (Airlie Beach, Cairns, Willis Island, Moreton Island).

01 April 2020Other Incidents

(Coronavirus issues) On April 1, 2020, the NSW Police ordered the cruise liner to leave its homeport Sydney Harbour.

Carnival Australia (that manages all the Australia-deployed vessels of the sister-brands Princess and P&O Australia) was officially banned from any Australian port until the country's Coronavirus-related travel alert is canceled. Since April 1, Australia's Government required all foreign- cruise vessels to leave the country's territorial waters promptly.

After leaving Australia, Pacific Explorer headed to Asia. The passenger-free ship was soon joined by 4 other (also Asia-bounded) Carnival Australia ships - , , , . Carnival contacted the governments of The Philippines and Indonesia to allow docking and crew debarkation (repatriation of their citizens). For the remaining staff/crew, Carnival chartered flights to their home countries. Also affected were the Carnival Australia-managed ships and .

Pacific Explorer entered Port Sydney NSW on April 1, returning from a drydock refit in Singapore and carrying only crew onboard.

September 2019Crew / Passenger Injuries and Overboards

(CruiseMapper emailed incident report from Jim McGibbon)

We travelled on Pacific Explorer in September 2019 (Sydney to New Caledonia).

During that voyage, we had nine medical emergencies (I'm not sure of all the details but we did have this confirmed by Captain Roger Bilton) and one breakdown of the water supply.

During muster on the first night, one lady had a stroke. She luckily was stabilised.

Rough weather then hit the ship, causing one of the water pipes to burst. This meant the ship was without water (for toilets, showers, etc) until repaired overnight.

During this rough weather, a passenger fell down some stairs and suffered a broken arm.

Another serious condition caused the ship to be redirected from the stop at Isle of Pines and back to Noumea so that person could be transferred to a medical facility.

A further medical emergency cancelled the trip to Mare and the boat had to make for the mainland of Australia (Sunshine Coast) so that a helicopter evacuation could take place. Luckily the person's condition improved so the evacuation was no longer required.

26 August 2018Sea Pollution

On August 26, 2018, the cruise liner was reported for sea pollution, after spilling 28,000 liters (7400 US gallons) of greywater and waste into Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (the Coral Sea, off the coast of northeastern Australia). The dumping resulted in a 28 m3 spill near Innisfail (Queensland).

According to the accident report, the spill occurred after food waste was transferred to galley's (ship kitchen's) holding tank due to a shortage in capacity in ship's food waste tanks. Galley tank's food waste was then discharged in the sea. AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) was informed about the incident on September 4.

During summers 2016-2017, over half of the shallow cover corals were lost due to climate changes and coral bleaching.

11 February 2018Crew / Passenger Crimes

On February 11, 2018, the ship returned back to homeport Sydney NSW after an onboard brawl erupted among passengers. Allegedly, a girl hit a male passenger in the head with a wine bottle. Reportedly, the brawl started at ~1 am, lasted for ~30 min and involved at least 15 people.

Police arrived and boarded the liner at Bradley's Head. From the vessel were removed a female and 6 male passengers. The ship was on 3-night Comedy- (itinerary Feb 9-12) roundtrip from Sydney.

21 August 2017Structural and Technical Issues

On August 21, 2017, during 7-day Queensland cruise (itinerary Aug 19-26) from homeport Sydney NSW, the ship encountered heavy storm with wind gusts up to 55 km/h (35 mph) and waves up to 10 m (25 ft). The incident resulted in reduced cruising speed (19 kph / 11 mph), 2 broken windows (one in Angelo’s Italian restaurant, one in the Waterfront Restaurant / main dining room) and itinerary change (call port Mooloolaba was skipped). No injuries were reported.

21 August 2017Coast Guard Medevacs

On August 21, 2017, at 12:45 pm, a 23-year-old female passenger was medevaced in stable condition by LifeFlight rescue aircrew and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) flight paramedic team. The young woman was transported to Bundaberg Hospital (Bundaberg QLD). The ship was approx 74 km (46 ml) off Fraser Coast QLD, operating on 7-day Queensland cruise (itinerary Aug 19-26) roundtrip from homeport Sydney NSW to Mooloolaba, Gladstone, Moreton Island.

January 2015Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(MS Dawn Princess) On January 9, 2015, an Australian news media reported a huge number (unspecified) of passengers suffered in a Norovirus outbreak on the voyage between Melbourne and Auckland NZ.

Note: When the itinerary doesn’t include US cruise ports, the ship is not required to report to CDC, thus no official illness report would be issued.

November 2014Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(MS Dawn Princess) November 28, 2014, during Around New Zealand cruise, a total of 158 passengers and 14 crew (~10% of all) suffered from the Norovirus symptoms (headache, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). All sick were quarantined in their cabins for 48 hours. Hygiene levels across the ship were heightened.

08 November 2013Fire Accident

(MS Dawn Princess) On November 8, 2013, at ~8:30 pm, a fire broke out in an electrical locker (in the substation on deck 6) and after ~1 1/2 hours was extinguished. All passengers summoned to their respective muster stations at ~9:30 pm, while the crew fought the fire. No injuries were reported.

The fire incident occurred on a New Zealand cruise, while the ship was en-route from Wellington to Napier. The Captain announced via the PA system that there was smoke forward-starboard on Deck 6, and commanded all passengers to return to their cabins. The second time he reported a fire on Deck 6, and that the crew was on the site.

After ~30 min, a third announcement was made for passengers to assemble at the muster points, wearing life jackets, warm clothes, their valuables, and medication. It all ended at ~10 p.m. when passengers were released.

According to unofficial information (anonymous crew), during the incident, the ship’s fire suppression system failed. This explains the muster station passenger gathering ~30 min after the fire was reported.

04 September 2013Crew / Passenger Injuries and Overboards

(MS Dawn Princess/law news) On September 4, 2013, in Sydney NSW, a male passenger filed a lawsuit against Carnival Australia, claiming USD 750,000 in compensation for sustained injuries.

The man (Graham Welsh) suffered a head injury after lights and ceiling panels fell on him when he was passing through a hallway on board. He was disembarked in Suva Fiji and taken by an ambulance to a hospital for a brain scan.

The man stated after the incident, he experienced vomiting and headaches and was left in Fiji without a passport and any money. He had to pay all medical expenses via his credit card.

September 2012Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(MS Dawn Princess) August-September 2012, CDC reported on itinerary Aug 21 to Sept 13, a Norovirus outbreak affected 114 passengers (out of 1778, or 6,4%) and 11 crew (out of 851, or 1,3%). The ship was on 23-day Alaskan repositioning cruise.

27 October 2011Propulsion / Power Loss

(MS Dawn Princess) On October 27, 2011, local news media reported the ship skipped the next scheduled call port Hawke’s Bay (Napier NZ) due to a mechanical problem. The vessel was on 14-day Australian to New Zealand cruise roundtrip from homeport Sydney NSW and en-route from Wellington NZ to Napier. Because it was ~3 hours late, the Captain decided to drop Napier and to continue directly towards Tauranga NZ.

11 June 2011Propulsion / Power Loss

(MS Dawn Princess) On June 11, 2011, while in Asia, passengers reported that the vessel operated on 3 (of all 4) engines. An engineering crew boarded in Singapore but failed to fix the problem. The ship was on ending in Dover UK. The incident resulted in reduced cruising speed and itinerary changes.

15 June 2010Propulsion / Power Loss

(MS Dawn Princess) On June 15, 2010, during the 104-day  roundtrip from Southampton England (departure July 14), the vessel experienced technical problems causing itinerary changes. In the Gulf of Aden, while en-route from Dubai to Safaga Egypt, it lost propulsion and was drifting for ~2 hours. Call port Safaga was dropped. Later on the cruise, bad weather prevented docking in Dublin Ireland.

January 2010Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(MS Dawn Princess) On January 12, 2010, an Australian news media reported 240+ passengers suffered from Norovirus on 13-day Australia to New Zealand "New Year's Cruise" (itinerary Dec 29 - Jan 12) from Melbourne to Auckland.

(MS Dawn Princess) On July 16, 2009, news media reported on the 35-night South Pacific Islands voyage roundtrip from Sydney NSW Australia, 5 passengers experienced swine flu symptoms (H1N1) and were quarantined in their cabins. Disembarkation in homeport Sydney was delayed ~5 hours.

November 2008Crew / Passenger Crimes

(MS Dawn Princess) In November 2008, during a Transpacific relocation cruise from the USA to Australia (San Francisco to Sydney), three incidents lead to passengers being forcibly evicted from the vessel. First, 2 female passengers were removed for shoplifting in the boutique shop. Later, 2 male passengers were removed after assaulting a crew. Then another 2 male passengers were removed for altercation (fight) in the laundry room.

June 2008Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(MS Dawn Princess) On June 16, 2008, the ship reported 68 passengers (or 3,2% of all) and 4 crew (or 0,5% of all) suffered from Norovirus illness outbreak during the 10-day Alaskan cruise roundtrip from homeport San Francisco CA.

May 2005Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

(MS Dawn Princess) In May 2005, CDC reported on itinerary April 29 to May 14, a Norovirus outbreak (gastrointestinal illness) infected 76 passengers (out of 1974, or 3,9%) and 9 crew (out of 864, or 1%). All sick suffered from Norovirus symptoms (headache, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and were quarantined to their cabins. The ship was on 15-day Hawaiian cruise from homeport San Francisco CA.

01 April 2001Propulsion / Power Loss

(MS Dawn Princess) On April 1, 2001, engine problems caused ~5 hours late arrival in Bridgetown Barbados.

Pacific Explorer Comes to the Aid of Distressed Yacht

pacific explorer yacht rescue

The cruise ship Pacific Explorer which departed Auckland on Friday, had to divert its course and respond to a distress call from a New Zealand-flagged yacht, which had a broken mast.

Tragically, one life was lost during the incident involving the distressed yacht. Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the crew of Pacific Explorer led by Captain Alan Nixon went above and beyond the call of duty, exemplifying courage and commitment. They managed to rescue one survivor from the waters, who was later transferred to the cruise ship for urgent medical attention. The Fijian Navy vessel Savenaca also played a pivotal role in the rescue efforts, picking up another survivor.

A video posted on social media showcased the small yacht bobbing in the rough seas alongside the much larger Pacific Explorer, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Carnival Australia expressed gratitude and admiration for its crew and Captain Alan Nixon, who showed immense courage and determination in the face of adversity. They also extended their appreciation to the guests on board for their understanding and cooperation during this unforeseen emergency.

Regrettably, due to the persistently poor weather conditions, it was deemed unsafe to attempt the rescue of the remaining yacht crew. However, the Pacific Explorer maintained communication with those aboard the stricken vessel throughout the evening, ensuring they were not left alone in their time of need.

The New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed that one of the yacht's crew members was safely on board the Pacific Explorer, receiving the necessary medical assistance. However, given the challenging conditions and the size discrepancy between the vessels, further rescue attempts for the remaining individuals on the yacht were impossible.

The Royal Fijian Navy (RFN) released Pacific Explorer from observation duties around 4 pm, allowing the cruise ship to resume its journey. It was now headed toward Port Denarau, as guests on board were kept informed about any necessary itinerary adjustments.

Four bodies retrieved from Mike Lynch's sunken yacht in Sicily

By Giselda Vagnoni

PORTICELLO, Italy (Reuters) -Four bodies were retrieved on Wednesday from the sunken wreck of a yacht belonging to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, the Italian fire brigade said, adding that they were continuing to search for two missing people.

The bodies were brought ashore on rescue boats and taken to nearby hospitals for formal identification. Local authorities refused to give any information about who they might have found.

Britain's Daily Telegraph reported that two of the dead were Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, while Italy's Corriere della Sera said the only bodies identified so far were Morgan Stanley banker Jonathan Bloomer and U.S. lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Bloomer's wife, Judy, and Morvillo's wife, Neda, also vanished when the British-flagged Bayesian, which had been carrying 22 people, was hit by a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday and sank.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the luxurious yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a U.S. fraud trial.

The 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian had been anchored off the Sicilian port of Porticello when the storm struck and witnesses said it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes, baffling naval marine experts who said such a vessel, presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, should have been able to withstand such weather.

The yacht is lying on its side at a depth of around 50 metres (165 feet), apparently largely intact.

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past two days. The victims were believed to have been trapped in cabins, which have proved extremely hard to get to, with divers only able to stay in the vessel for 8-10 minutes before having to re-surface.

Fifteen people, including Lynch's wife, managed to escape the boat before it capsized, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

Besides the diving team, the coast guard has deployed a remotely operated vehicle to scan the seabed and take underwater pictures and videos that it said may provide "useful and timely elements" for prosecutors looking into the disaster.

The coast guard has been questioning survivors, including the captain of the Bayesian, and passengers on the yacht that was moored next to it who witnessed the ship going down, judicial sources said. That vessel survived unscathed.

No one is under investigation at the moment, sources added.

The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020. It had the world's tallest aluminium mast, measuring 72 metres (236 feet), according to its makers.

Lynch has been referred to as Britain's Bill Gates. He built the UK's largest software firm, Autonomy, which was sold to HP for $11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unravelled with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial.

He was acquitted on all charges by a jury in San Francisco in June. Morvillo, who works for Clifford Chance, represented him at the trial, while Bloomer was a character witness on his behalf.

Bayesian's captain, James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander who survived the shipwreck, was a "very good sailor" and "very well respected" in the Mediterranean, his brother Mark told The New Zealand Herald.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, a UK-based non-profit organisation that trains sea rescuers, said the Bayesian was the victim of a "high impact" weather-related incident.

"If it was a water spout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event," he told Reuters, meaning a rare and unpredictable phenomenon.

Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

  • Share full article

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

Palouse-Clearwater Search and Rescue

Palouse-Clearwater Search and Rescue (PCSAR) is a non-profit, volunteer Search and Rescue organization based in Moscow, Idaho. It is one unit of the Latah County SAR Council

Members come from all walks of life. Membership is open to almost anyone at least 16 years old. Physical abilities are important in some aspects of service like ground search teams, yet assignments during a search include Communications Officer, Base Camp Boss, and Equipment Officer. PCSAR recognizes that every person has something to offer, regardless of age or physical ability.

We provide resources (manpower) for ground searches, rope rescue, and search management. Some of our members are associated with other groups that provide mantracking services and dog teams.

Who we serve

PCSAR primarily serves the people of Latah County (Idaho) through the Latah County Sheriff's Office. We are also available to serve other jurisdictions, especially Whitman County, Washington, and adjacent Idaho counties.

When we meet

Most meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Latah County Fairgrounds Event Center in Moscow.

An Annual Meeting is usually held April at a local restaurant, and the August meeting is traditionally a potluck supper at a park or member's residence.

PCSAR trains on a regular basis, with topics ranging from navigation and survival, to crime scene protocol. Training usually takes place every other month on a Saturday or Sunday.

Riva , the iconic Ferretti Group brand, presented a new model at the historical Lake d’Iseo shipyards in July 2011. Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. It is also perfect for anyone wishing to enhance their yacht with an exclusive tender that will never go unnoticed.

Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions. Besides the electrohydraulic bimini top, it was also designed with a waterproof, automobile-style soft top which protects those on board against water and the wind during cruising.
