Decide on a budget Before chartering a yacht, clearly define what budget you can spend on it. The rental price depends on the type and model of the selected vessel, the season and the number of people who plan to go sailing. And also from equipping the yacht.
The most expensive are modern models of ships that are designed for long-term sailing. Such yachts are equipped with cabins in which you can sleep. That is why you can go sailing on a ship for several days. Such a boat accommodates up to 10 people. Compact, small yachts with minimal equipment are more affordable.
You can get acquainted with the average prices for renting a yacht in Rovinj in our yacht catalog, or by contacting us for a consultation. We will talk about the available options and help you choose a yacht that fits your budget.
Choose a ship model The most popular are sailing and motor yachts, sailing yachts (sailboats), motor yachts.
Motor yachts have a powerful engine, so they allow you to cover long distances in a short period of time. Modern models of motor vessels guarantee full control over the sailing process: they are equipped with powerful on-board electronics, climate systems, and have a generator. An additional advantage of motor yachts is comfort. They usually have separate cabins, a large deck for relaxing and sunbathing. A table and chairs are often placed at the stern of the vessel.
Sailing yachts use only wind energy for movement. That is why they are slower and better suited to tourists who like the leisurely rhythm of sailing between islands, enjoying cozy bays and relaxation. The equipment of sailing yachts is different and depends on the model of the vessel you choose.
Sailing and motor yachts are a type that combines the advantages of both previous ones. Such a vessel can move both on wind energy and thanks to a powerful motor. Therefore, it is suitable for leisurely recreation on the water, and for covering long distances in the open sea. Such yachts are maneuverable, fast, easily moored even in shallow bays thanks to the features of the design, which resembles a catamaran. Offers a lot of free space in the cockpit, on the deck and in the cabin.
Which vessel is better to choose from the proposed types? It is very individual. Tell your requirements for the ideal yacht, and we will offer several models at once. You don’t need to search for “yacht charter Rovinj” anymore, because all the best offers have already been collected with us.
Rent a yacht in advance During the peak tourist season (June-August), vessels are actively booked. Therefore, it is important to start looking for a yacht at the same time as looking for a villa or apartment where you plan to live. The optimal time is 3-4 weeks before the start of the vacation. Going in June – look for a yacht in May. So you can choose from more models. And sometimes – even save money by taking advantage of discounts.
The shores of the Adriatic Sea are magical at any time of the year. Therefore, whenever you go sailing on a yacht, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of the landscape. If you are renting a sailing yacht, the best season is the summer months, from mid-June to the end of August. At this time the westerly breeze is blowing enough for comfortable sailing, but not too strong.
If we speak more specifically, sailing on a yacht in black deserves special attention. After all, at the beginning of summer, there is no strong heat yet. The average daytime temperature is a comfortable +24°C, and precipitation is extremely rare. You will be able to sit comfortably on the deck under the warm sun, admire the scenery, and relax.
In July, the average daily temperature rises to +31°C, but the pleasant sea breeze does not allow the heat to become unbearable. In August, the temperature drops slightly compared to July: it is +30°C. The sea at this time is especially warm: ideal for swimming, diving and surfing. All because warm currents move north along the Adriatic coast in August.
September is the month when the sailing season begins in Croatia. Yachtsmen from different parts of the world come to the country. But note: the September season is not for beginners. The winds are getting stronger, so you need to manage the yacht skillfully and professionally.

Communication was easy and straightforward. Great cheap little boat that we had your independence with. Lost one star for comfort just because it’s a little boat no other reason. If you want a day boat with no skipper and you don’t have a licence then this is the one togo for.

The captain of the superyacht who is recovering in hospital has spoken to Italian media for the first time with just five words, as divers struggle to reach inside the boat.
Captain James Catfield told la Repubblica: “We didn’t see it coming.”
Divers in Sicily’s waters searching for six missing people following the sinking of Mike Lynch’s yacht have described the struggle of operating in “very small” spaces.
An unexpected violent storm sank the British-flagged “Bayesian” near the port of Porticello in the early hours of Monday.
The luxury superyacht is still “practically intact” on the seabed, but the depth makes it difficult to access, Luca Cari, an emergency responder, told Italy newspaper Giornale di Sicilia.
At least one person has been confirmed dead and six are missing from the yacht carrying 22 people. The others were rescued by a passing sailboat.
Italy’s fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco also said on social media that early inspections of the wreck were “unsuccessful” due to fallen furniture obstructing passages.
Salvatore Cocina, head of the civil protection agency in Sicily, said Morgan Stanley’s Jonathan Bloomer and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at British law firm Clifford Chance who had been representing Mr Lynch, were among the missing.
“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” he told Reuters.
Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of the 15 people rescued. Eight survivors were taken to hospital, including a o ne-year-old baby .
Mr Lynch had reportedly invited his lawyers and friends to celebrate a recent legal victory that cleared him of fraud accusations in the US.

Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, whose chairman Jonathan Bloomer is still missing has issued a statement this morning.
The spokesperson said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation.”
The family of Stephen Chamberlain, who was not on the yacht but was the co-defendant in Mike Lynch’s trial, have described him as “a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend”.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed that Mr Chamberlain was killed on Saturday after being hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire.
His family released a tribute to the 52-year-old via the police force, saying: “Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible. He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of his loved ones.”
My colleague Barney Davis has the full story here.
James Catfield, the captain of the yacht who is recovering at the Termini Imerese hospital has spoken to Italian media for the first time.
La Repubblica quotes just one sentence from Mr Catfield: “We didn’t see it coming.”
Tribute has been paid to Jonathan Bloomer, who is believed to be among the missing, from the insurer Hiscox that Mr Bloomer chairs.
Its CEO has confirmed that Bloomer and his wife Judy are among those still missing this morning.
Aki Hussain, Group Chief Executive Officer, Hiscox, said in a statement to The Independent : “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”
The luxury superyacht is “practically intact” on the seabed despite sinking, Marco Tilotta, a firefighter diver from Palermo, has told Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.
He said in an interview that the £30 million yacht was lying on its side at a depth of 48 metres, but that divers were unable to gain access because of floating furnishings and other debris inside the yacht.
He said: “When we went down to the water around 5:30 a.m., we found a yacht that was practically intact. It is resting on its side on the starboard side. It has no gashes, no signs of impact.’’
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four inspectors had been sent to Sicily to conduct a “preliminary assessment,” Reuters reported.
One expert at the scene who declined to be named said an early focus of the investigation would be whether the yacht’s crew had had time to close access hatches into the vessel before the storm struck.
The nearby captain of a Dutch-flagged vessel told the Reuters news agency that when the winds surged, he used the engine to keep his boat upright and avoid a collision with the Bayesian, which had been anchored alongside him.
“We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” Karsten Borner told journalists.
The other boat “went flat on the water, and then down”, he added.
He said his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft - including a baby girl and her mother - and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.
He added: “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”
One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Emsley, told la Republica: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.
The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported that the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance who represented Lynch in a long-standing trial in the U.S., were among the missing.
The wives of both men were also unaccounted for, said Salvatore Cocina, head of Civil Protection in Sicily.
Reality star Gemma Collins has revealed that she and her nephew were “lucky to have survived” in a small boat rocked by the same horror storm that capsized Mike Lynch’s yacht off the coast of Sicily.
Mike Lynch, dubbed as Britain’s Bill Gates, is still missing presumed dead alongside his daughter, Hannah, 18, who had just completed her A-levels and was to read English at Oxford.
The Only Way is Essex star reassured her followers that she and 15-year-old nephew Hayden were both fine with an Instagram post featuring her posing on a yacht in the Mediterranean.
She wrote: “Holiday update. My heartfelt condolences to the people and families involved in the tragic disaster at sea in Sicily.”
“I was very lucky me and my nephew to have survived the storm at sea. I am shaken and returning to the UK tomorrow, god was on our side today. We was stuck for 4 hours can you imagine what was going through my mind. Thank you @bluediamondcruise for getting us back safely.”
Still missing is Christopher Morvillo, a top lawyer who has worked on high-profile corruption cases, including Mike Lynch’s recent trial.
The lawyer at the US branch of Clifford Chance and his wife Neda have not been seen since the Bayesian foundered off Palermo Monday morning after being caught in bad weather.
He also worked on the criminal investigation surrounding the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, as an assistant US attorney for the southern district of New York from 1999 to 2005.
In a tragic final LinkedIn post Mr Morvillo thanked all the legal minds that had helped Mr Lynch win the fraud trial in June after a mammoth 10-year court battle. Signing off, he said: “And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. “And they all lived happily ever after….”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
The family of missing tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s co-defendant have paid tribute after he died in a car crash.
Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Lynch’s software company Autonomy, was involved in a fatal car crash on Saturday.
‘He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible,’ Chamberlain’s family said today.
Lynch was acquitted of fraud in June, with Chamberlain having faced similar charges.
The luxury yacht Bayesian was hit by a sudden tornado off the coast of Porticello fishing village causing it to sink. One person, the sailboat’s chef, was found dead, while six people remain missing .
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife are reportedly among the missing along with Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
A football team Stephen Chamberlain volunteered at has paid tribute.
‘Everyone at Cambridge United is saddened to hear of the death of Steve Chamberlain,’ the club said in a statement on its website.
‘Steve was the unpaid Finance Director at the Club from 2016 to 2018 and also a strong supporter of local football in Cambridgeshire. Our thoughts and condolences go to all his family and friends at this difficult time.’
Chamberlain, a co-defendant of missing Mike Lynch, died on Monday following a car accident in Stretham, Cambridgeshire, on Saturday morning.
The Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology previously said that Porticello, about 12 miles east of the Sicilian capital, Palermo, was being battered by a storm on Monday.
The agency had registered intense lighting nativity and strong winds in the area while the Bayesian was anchored about a half-mile off Porticello.
Local fisherman Giuseppe Cefalu said he saw a ‘tornado’ in the area – and a flare shot up into the sky at 5am. But by the time he arrived at the site, all he could see was cushions and a bouy.
The weather conditions were ‘fierce’, he told the PA news agency, with ‘very strong’ wind pummelling Porticello.
‘We have checked the hull from the outside, visibility is good, now our goal is to penetrate inside the vessel.’
This is what Marco Tilotta, one of the firefighter divers in the search for the missing six Bayesian passengers, told Sicilian newspaper Giornale De Sicilia .
A boat from Vigili del Fuoco – the Italian fire service – was seen leaving the port of Porticello, near Palermo, at around 11.30am.
Fire officials say getting into the flipped-over yacht is ‘complex’, with experts planning how to ‘open’ the Bayesia.
Morgan Stanley, one of Wall Street’s most prestigious banks, has paid tribute to Jonathan Bloomer.
Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley International
‘We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragedy,’ the bank’s spokesperson said. ‘Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation.’
Waterspouts are whirling columns of air and water mist. Think of them like a water tornado. Or, as Dr Jian-Guo Li, a senior modelling scientist at the Met Office puts it, ‘an atmospheric tornado happened over a water surface’.
Waterspouts form when cold air moves over warmer water, sucking up moisture like a vacuum cleaner.
‘You may have seen many American tornado reports, which showed how cars and house roofs are sucked into the air and scattered around like toys,’ Jian-Guo told Metro.co.uk .
‘When it forms over a water surface, it pumps the water into the air, resulting in the waterspouts. When a boat or yacht happened to be in its centre, it could be lifted and dropped aside.’
Waterspouts start off as funnel clouds, according to the Met Office , a rather literal name for clouds that look like spinning fingers. Funnel clouds are typically a sign of bad weather like rain, hail and thunder are on the horizon.
These spinning clouds don’t touch the earth’s surface. If they reach a body of water, however, they become a waterspout. If it makes landfall, it becomes a tornado.
That means there are two types of waterspouts. Torandic ones start off on land before moving out onto the water, and fair weather, which are more common and form over open water.
Waterspouts can be thousands of feet tall and whip winds of 50mph but only last about 10 minutes or so, though there are often more than one.
Six tourists are missing after a luxury yacht sank after being hit by a tornado off the coast of Sicily.
The yacht, named Bayesian, was carrying 10 crew members and 12 passengers when it capsized early Monday morning.
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife are reportedly among the missing along with businessman Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

‘We didn’t see it coming.’
This is all James Catfield, who was behind the wheel of the Bayesian luxury yacht at the time of the accident, ‘managed’ to tell La Repubblica .
The newspaper says the captain is in hospital in Termini Imerese, on the north coast of the island. He wept during the interview and was wearing a bandage on his calf.
Catfield is one of four people rescued and taken to the hospital following the capsizing.
The search for the Bayesian yacht which sank off the coast of Palermo yesterday has been described as ‘very complicated’ by expert divers.
Marco Tilotta, an inspector of the Palermo fire brigade’s diving unit, was among the first to intervene in Porticello.
He told Italian newspaper Il Messaggero : ‘When we went under the water, around 5:30 in the morning, we found a yacht that was practically intact. It looked like a scenario similar to the Costa Concordia, on a smaller scale. Unfortunately, these are very complicated searches.’
Expanding further, he told the Guardian: ‘The greatest challenge is the depth, which does not allow for immediate interventions. You have to consider that when we go underwater, we have 3 minutes to descend and 8 minutes to work on the wreck. Then we have to begin the ascent phase.
‘There is also the problem of accessing the vessel with all the belongings inside and the fact that the boat is positioned at 90 degrees.
‘We have not yet entered the boat. We plan to do so soon and inspect every inch of the vessel.’
The family of Stephen Chamberlain, the co-defendant in the US trial of missing tech tycoon Mike Lynch, have described him as a ‘much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend’ in a tribute following his death after being hit by a car in Stretham.
Chamberlain, 52, died while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, according to his lawyers.
In a statement released through Cambridgeshire Police, the family said: ‘Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend.
‘He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible.
‘He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
‘He will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of his loved ones.’
Aki Hussain, the boss of Hiscox, a major insurance provider in Britain, has confirmed the company’s non-executive chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer are among those missing.
He said in a statement: ‘We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.
‘Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.’
Rescue personnel were back in the ocean this morning as a search for six people missing since their yacht capsized entered its second day.
The British-flagged Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored a half-mile off Porticello, about 12 miles east of the Sicilian capital, Palermo, in the early hours of Monday.
But the yacht was struck by a violent storm. As ‘brief’ was it was, Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology said, it was ‘intense’ and may have involved a waterspout, a small water tornado.
Fifteen people were rescued, though six remain unaccounted for. One is dead.
Three teams are in the water today, Italian news agency Ansa reported. Two from the coast guard and one from the fire brigade.
The British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was reportedly celebrating his acquittal in a US fraud trial relating to the £8.64 billion sale of his firm to computer giant HP when the disaster struck.
The trip on the luxury yacht Bayesian in the Mediterranean was supposed to be a celebration, MailOnline reports citing the father of Ayla Roland, a member of Lynch’s legal team.
Another guest on the yacht told doctors at the hospital that the trip was part of a ‘corporate holiday.’
Jonathan Bloomer, the International chairman of Morgan Stanley, and his wife are reportedly among the missing after Mike Lynch’s Bayesian luxury yacht sank suddenly.
Bloomer and his wife are believed to be among those unaccounted for, Italian authorities said, along with British businessman Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
Christopher Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford and Chance, and his wife are believed to be among the six missing people, according to the Italian Civil Protection agency.
MarineTraffic data shows the route of the superyacht, just days before being hit by a tornado off the coast of Sicily.
According to the website, ‘Bayesian’ was last anchored off the island of Panarea, leaving the area on just after 3pm on Thursday.
It then passed through the Aeolian Islands, and on Sunday, it reportedly underwent turbulence near Cefalù.
The tragedy occurred this morning, while on its way to Palermo, with the boat sending its very last signal at 2.06am.

Pictures from 2021 show a bird’s-eye view from the top of the superyacht’s 75-metre mast.
The post on X by a rigging company claims that the mast is the tallest made from aluminium in the world.
This comes after Karsten Börner, the German commander of the boat next to it, said he witnessed the mainmast break and fall into the sea, causing the vessel to capsize.

We have been working with this yacht for many years meaning we have records & reports throughout the history of the rig, enabling us to tune, test & troubleshoot easily and effectively. pic.twitter.com/7UtJEkGuKa — RSB Rigging (@RSBRigging) October 19, 2021
The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment.
The Southampton-based body is an independent unit of the Department for Transport and has four accident investigation teams.
A basic assessment of the scene will be made, with no investigation launched at this stage, it is understood.
The superyacht completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at a number of ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.
Mike Lynch’s co-defendant in his US fraud trial has died in hospital just hours after the 49-metre ‘Bayesian’ superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily.
It is a double tragedy for the families of the two former colleagues, who were acquitted of all 15 charges by a jury in San Francisco in June.
Stephen Chamberlain was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday and had been placed on life support, according to a source cited by Reuters.
He died from his injuries earlier today. In a statement, Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, who described him as a ‘dear client and friend’, said he had died after being ‘fatally struck’ by a car while out running.
At the same time, a search is still ongoing to find Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah who are missing in Sicily.
Chamberlain faced the same charges of fraud and conspiracy as his former boss for allegedly scheming to inflate the value of Autonomy, then Britain’s largest software firm, before it was sold.
‘He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity, and we deeply miss him,’ Lincenberg said.
‘He fought successfully to clear his good name, which lives on through his wonderful family.’
Divers have been inspecting the wreck of the ‘Bayesian’, which is lying at a depth of 49 metres.
They were seen jumping in the sea at the port in the village of Porticello where the vessel sank.
Karsten Börner, the German commander of the sailboat next to the ‘Bayesian’, witnessed the moment its mainmast broke and fell into the sea.
He told La Republica ‘it all happened in a few moments’, adding: ‘The wind was strong, very strong.
‘Suddenly I saw the mainmast of the sailing ship bend and then break and fall into the water.’
The captain managed to rescue 15 people, but when he returned, he said there was ‘no one left in the water’.

It was the kind of outlandish scheme that might bubble up in a bar around closing time.
In May of 2022, a handful of senior Ukrainian military officers and businessmen had gathered to toast their country’s remarkable success in halting the Russian invasion. Buoyed by alcohol and patriotic fervor, somebody suggested a radical next step: destroying Nord Stream.
After all, the twin natural-gas pipelines that carried Russian gas to Europe were providing billions to the Kremlin war machine. What better way to make Vladimir Putin pay for his aggression?
Just over four months later, in the small hours of Sept. 26, Scandinavian seismologists picked up signals indicating an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption hundreds of miles away, near the Danish island of Bornholm. They were caused by three powerful explosions and the largest-ever recorded release of natural gas, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of Denmark.
One of the most audacious acts of sabotage in modern history, the operation worsened an energy crisis in Europe—an assault on critical infrastructure that could be considered an act of war under international law. Theories swirled about who was responsible. Was it the CIA? Could Putin himself have set the plan in motion?
Now, for the first time, the outlines of the real story can be told. The Ukrainian operation cost around $300,000, according to people who participated in it. It involved a small rented yacht with a six-member crew, including trained civilian divers. One was a woman, whose presence helped create the illusion they were a group of friends on a pleasure cruise.
“I always laugh when I read media speculation about some huge operation involving secret services, submarines, drones and satellites,” one officer who was involved in the plot said. “The whole thing was born out of a night of heavy boozing and the iron determination of a handful of people who had the guts to risk their lives for their country.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially approved the plan, according to one officer who participated and three people familiar with it. But later, when the CIA learned of it and asked the Ukrainian president to pull the plug, he ordered a halt, those people said.
Zelensky’s commander in chief, Valeriy Zaluzhniy, who was leading the effort, nonetheless forged ahead.
The Journal spoke to four senior Ukrainian defense and security officials who either participated in or had direct knowledge of the plot. All of them said the pipelines were a legitimate target in Ukraine’s war of defense against Russia.
Portions of their account were corroborated by a nearly two-year German police investigation into the attack, which has obtained evidence including email, mobile and satellite phones communications, as well as fingerprints and DNA samples from the alleged sabotage team. The Germany inquiry hasn’t directly linked President Zelensky to the clandestine operation.
Gen. Zaluzhniy, now Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, said in a text exchange that he knows nothing of any such operation and that any suggestion to the contrary is a “mere provocation.” Ukraine’s armed forces, he added, weren’t authorized to conduct overseas missions, and he therefore wouldn’t have been involved.
A senior official of the main Ukrainian intelligence service, SBU, denied his government had anything to do with the sabotage, and said that Zelensky in particular “did not approve the implementation of any such actions on the territory of third countries and did not issue relevant orders.”
Putin has publicly blamed the U.S. for the attacks. A senior Russian diplomat in Berlin echoed that claim, and said the German investigation findings were “fairy tales worthy of the Brothers Grimm.”
In June, Germany’s federal prosecutor quietly issued the first arrest warrant in the case for a Ukrainian professional diving instructor for his alleged involvement in the sabotage. The German investigation is now focusing on Zaluzhniy and his aides, people familiar with the probe say, although they have no evidence that could be presented in court.
The findings could upend relations between Kyiv and Berlin, which has provided much of the financing and military equipment to Ukraine, second only to the U.S. Some German political leaders may have been willing to overlook evidence pointing to Ukraine for fear of undermining domestic support for the war effort. But German police are politically independent and their investigation took on a life of its own as they pursued one lead after another.
“An attack of this scale is a sufficient reason to trigger the collective defense clause of NATO, but our critical infrastructure was blown up by a country that we support with massive weapons shipments and billions in cash,” said a senior German official familiar with the probe.
Following the May 2022 pact between the businessmen and the military officers, it was agreed that the former would finance and help execute the project, because the army had no funds and was increasingly relying on foreign financing as it pushed back against the onslaught of its gargantuan neighbor. A sitting general with experience in special operations would oversee the mission, which one participant described as a “public-private partnership.” He would report directly to the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, the four-star Gen. Zaluzhniy.
Within days, Zelensky approved the plan, according to the four people familiar with the plot. All arrangements were made verbally, leaving no paper trail.
But the next month, the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD learned of the plot and warned the CIA, according to several people familiar with the Dutch report. U.S. officials then promptly informed Germany, according to U.S. and German officials.
The CIA warned Zelensky’s office to stop the operation, U.S. officials said. The Ukrainian president then ordered Zalyzhniy to halt it, according to Ukrainian officers and officials familiar with the conversation as well as Western intelligence officials. But the general ignored the order, and his team modified the original plan, these people said.
The general tasked with commanding the operation enlisted some of Ukraine’s top special-operations officers with experience in orchestrating high-risk clandestine missions against Russia to help coordinate the attack.
One of them was Roman Chervinsky, a decorated colonel who previously served in Ukraine’s main security and intelligence service, the SBU.
Chervinsky is currently on trial in Ukraine for unrelated charges. In July, he was released on bail after over a year in detention. Reached after his release, he declined to comment on the Nord Stream case, saying he wasn’t authorized to speak about it.
In a subsequent broadcast interview, he said that the sabotage had two positive effects for Ukraine: It helped loosen Russia’s grip on the European countries supporting Kyiv, and it left Moscow with only one main avenue for channeling gas to Europe, pipelines traversing Ukraine. Despite the war, Ukraine collects lucrative transit fees for Russian oil and gas estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
Chervinsky and the sabotage team initially studied an older, elaborate plan to blow up the pipeline drafted by Ukrainian intelligence and Western experts after Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, according to people familiar with the plot.
After dismissing that idea due its cost and complexity, the planners settled on using a small sailing boat and a team of six—a mix of seasoned active duty soldiers and civilians with maritime expertise—to blow up the 700-mile-long pipelines that sat more than 260 feet below the sea’s surface.
In September 2022, the plotters rented a 50-foot leisure yacht called Andromeda in Germany’s Baltic port town of Rostock. The boat was leased with the help of a Polish travel agency that was set up by Ukrainian intelligence as a cover for financial transactions nearly a decade ago, according to Ukrainian officers and people familiar with the German investigation.
One crew member, a military officer on active duty who was fighting in the war, was a seasoned skipper, and four were experienced deep-sea divers, people familiar with the German investigation said. The crew included civilians, one of whom was a woman in her 30s who had trained privately as a diver. She was handpicked for her skills but also to lend more plausibility to the crew’s disguise as friends on holiday, according to one person familiar with the planning.
The skipper took a short leave from his unit, which had been fighting on the front in the southeast of Ukraine, and his commander was kept in the dark, according to two Ukrainians familiar with the plot.
Ukraine has a long history of training top civilian and military divers. A naval base on the Crimean Peninsula in the past trained deep-sea divers for the purposes of sabotage and demining. It also kept combat dolphins trained to attack enemy divers and blow up ships, according to two senior Ukrainian officers. The base was taken over by Russia after it occupied Crimea, and some of its staff moved elsewhere in Ukraine.
Armed only with diving equipment, satellite navigation, a portable sonar and open-source maps of the seabed charting the position of the pipelines, the crew set out. The four divers worked in pairs, according to people familiar with the German investigation. Operating in pitch-dark, icy waters, they handled a powerful explosive known as HMX that was wired to timer-controlled detonators. A small amount of the light explosive would be sufficient to rip open the high-pressure pipes.
Spending 20 minutes at that depth requires around three hours of decompression, and the person must then refrain from diving for at least 24 hours or risk serious injury.
Inclement weather forced the crew to make an unplanned stop in the Swedish port of Sandhamn. One diver accidentally dropped an explosive device to the bottom of the sea. The crew briefly discussed whether to abort the operation due to the bad weather but the storm soon subsided, two people familiar with the operation said.
Witnesses on other yachts moored in Sandhamn noted that the Andromeda was the only boat with a small Ukrainian flag hoisted on its mast.
In the wake of the attack, which took out three of the four conduits forming the pipelines, energy prices surged. Germany and other nations scrambled to nationalize energy companies that handled Russian gas but collapsed after the pipelines were destroyed. Even today Germany is paying around $1 million a day alone to lease floating terminals for liquefied natural gas or LNG, which only partly replaced the Russian gas flows channeled by Nord Stream.
Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the U.S., among others, sent out warships, divers, underwater drones and aircraft to investigate the area around the gas leaks.
Zelensky took Zaluzhniy to task, but the general shrugged off his criticism, according to three people familiar with the exchange. Zaluzhniy told Zelensky that the sabotage team, once dispatched, went incommunicado and couldn’t be called off because any contact with them could compromise the operation.
“He was told it’s like a torpedo—once you fire it at the enemy, you can’t pull it back again, it just keeps going until it goes ‘boom,’ ” a senior officer familiar with the conversation said.
Days after the attack, in October 2022, Germany’s foreign secret service received a second tipoff about the Ukrainian plot from the CIA, which again passed on a report by the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD. It offered a detailed account of the attack, including the type of boat used and the possible route taken by the crew, according to German and Dutch officials.
The Netherlands built deep intelligence-gathering capacity in Ukraine and Russia after Russian-backed paramilitaries downed a Malaysia Airlines flight originating from Amsterdam over eastern Ukraine, two Dutch officials said.
Due to rules governing the sharing of classified intelligence, German police investigating the case weren’t allowed to see the Dutch report that linked Zaluzhniy and the Ukrainian military to the attack, but they were made aware of it by intelligence officials.
German investigators questioned dozens of potential witnesses, scanned the bottom of the sea around the blasts and sifted through masses of data including digital communication, travel records and financial transactions.
They had one lucky break. In rushing to leave Germany, the sabotage crew neglected to wash the Andromeda, allowing German detectives to find traces of explosives, fingerprints and DNA samples of the crew.
Investigators later identified their mobile phone numbers and their Iridium satellite phone. That data allowed them to reconstruct the entire journey of the boat, which moored in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. U.S. authorities sought a court order to obtain from Google the emails a Ukrainian businessman used to lease the boat, and handed them over to the Germans. That Ukrainian businessman had contacted a number of boat rental firms in Sweden as well as in Germany, starting from mid-May 2022.
Investigators then analyzed all mobile phone traffic in the areas where the boat was located, trawling through thousands of connections to distill the relevant data.
At one point they were startled to find out that thousands of German mobile phones were active in the tiny Swedish port of Sandhamn, which was nearly empty at the time the boat was sheltering there from a storm.
It later emerged that a vast cruise ship belonging to a tourist operator passed by and the phones of German passengers briefly linked up with the local cellular mast.
They struggled at one point to secure the cooperation of Polish authorities despite the fact that the saboteurs used Poland partly as a logistical base and stopped in the Polish port of Kolobrzeg.
A port official suspicious of the yacht’s crew alerted police. Poland’s border guard checked the identification of the crew, who produced passports from European Union members. They were allowed to continue sailing north, where they laid the rest of the mines, people familiar with the investigation say.
The entire port was covered by extensive video surveillance, they found. However, despite a history of close cooperation between Warsaw and Berlin in police matters, Polish officials initially refused to hand over the CCTV footage of the port. This year, they told their German colleagues that the footage had been routinely destroyed shortly after the Andromeda departed.
The Polish internal security agency ABW told the Journal that no such footage exists.
By November 2022, German investigators believed Ukrainians were behind the explosion.
Earlier this year, Zelensky ousted Zaluzhniy from his military post, saying a shakeup was needed to reboot the war effort. Zaluzhniy, who has been viewed domestically as a potential political rival, was later appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.K., a position that grants him immunity from prosecution.
In June, German officials issued a confidential arrest warrant for a Ukrainian citizen who the Germans believe was one of the crew members. According to people familiar with the investigation, a van driving the Ukrainian sabotage team from Poland into Germany in 2022 was snapped by a German speed camera, and the man, a diving instructor living with his family near Warsaw, was in the photo.
Authorities in Poland didn’t act on the warrant. The instructor is believed to have since returned to Ukraine. Poland’s failure to arrest him is a major blow to the German probe, because he and other suspects have now been tipped off and will avoid travelling outside Ukraine, people familiar with the investigation said. Ukraine doesn’t extradite its own citizens.
Ukrainian officials who participated in or are familiar with the plot believe it would be impossible to put any of the commanding officers on trial, because no evidence exists beyond conversations among top officials who were, at least initially, all in agreement about wanting to blow up the pipelines.
“None of them will testify, lest they incriminate themselves,” one former officer said.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those unaccounted for after the ship was battered by a tornado off the coast of Palermo in the early hours of Monday morning.
Tuesday 20 August 2024 09:34, UK
A man has died and six people are missing after a UK-flagged superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily in a tornado - with a prominent British businessman among those unaccounted for.
Technology tycoon Mike Lynch owned the 56-metre vessel (183ft), named Bayesian.
Mr Lynch, known as the "British Bill Gates", has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.
In June, he was cleared of all charges by a US jury related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is among those missing after his yacht sank, local media reports.
Follow live updates: People missing after superyacht sinks
Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is confirmed to be among the 15 people who were rescued after the British-flagged yacht capsized at around 4.30am local time (3.30am UK time) on Monday.
One body has also been recovered, after being found close to the vessel, according to local media.

The boat was hit by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, that struck where the yacht had been anchored during the storm.
Police divers have been trying to reach the hull of the ship, which is resting at a depth of 50 metres (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo.
During the rescue effort, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck, Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily, said.
“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he added.
The incident comes days after Stephen Chamberlain, Mr Lynch's co-accused in the fraud trial, died in a car collision in Stretham, Cambridgeshire.
Mr Chamberlain's lawyer said he was out running on Saturday when he was hit by a car.
Most on board yacht thought to be British
The boat had 12 passengers and a crew of 10 people. Four of the missing passengers are British and two are American, Italian news website la Reppublica reports.
Most of those on board were reported to be from Britain - including a mother and one-year-old daughter who are among those rescued.
Speaking to the Giornale Di Sicilia newspaper, Charlotte Golunski said: "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.
"I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily, the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board."

Ms Golunski was reportedly given stitches for a chest injury following the ordeal. The father of the child also survived, Mr Cocina said.
Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken ashore at Porticello were taken to hospital, while the others were taken to a hotel.
The Italian coast guard said the boat had passengers from Britain, the US, and Canada.
Meanwhile, multiple Italian news outlets reported that people on the boat were from Britain, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.
British-French citizens were also among those on the superyacht, according to reports.
'I saw it sinking with my own eyes'
Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman from Porticello who witnessed the storm, told local media: "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big. I saw it suddenly sink."
He added: "I think the whirlwind came from Porticello... shortly afterwards I went down to Santa Nicolicchia Bay to get a better look at what was happening.
"The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."
Fabio Cefalu, another local fisherman, called rescue services after spotting the wrecked boat off Porticello.
He said: "Around 3.55am we witnessed the whirlwind. After a quarter of an hour, we saw a flare 500 metres away from the dock.
"Around 4:35am we went out to sea for the rescue, however, we only saw the remains of the boat floating. There were no men in the sea. So we immediately called the harbour master's office."
A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected."
Camper and Nicholsons, which provided yacht management services for the Bayesian, has confirmed the vessel sank at around 4.30am local time.
The company said in a statement: "The Italian coast guard is leading search and rescue operations, and has safely recovered 15 individuals. Efforts to locate the seven missing persons continue.
"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."
Online charter sites listed the Bayesian as available for rent for up to €195,000 (about £166,339) a week.
Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, was on Monday night reported to be among the missing from the sunken yacht Bayesian.
He was confirmed missing by Italian authorities, according to The Times.
Mr Bloomer is a close friend of Mike Lynch, the owner of the yacht, who is also missing alongside his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
Salvatore Cocina, head of the Civil Protection in Sicily, said Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, was also missing.
The vessel is thought to have been hit by a tornado while anchored off Sicily.
Four of the missing passengers are British and two are American, Italian newspaper la Repubblica stated. Italian media said the man who died was the yacht’s onboard chef.
Mr Lynch’s US fraud trial, which ended two months ago with him being cleared by a San Francisco jury, saw Mr Bloomer take the stand as he had led the audit committee at Mr Lynch’s firm Autonomy.
It was alleged that he had overseen fraudulent accounting at Autonomy that wildly inflated the former FTSE 100 company’s value before it was sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion (£8.7 billion) in 2011.
Mr Bloomer claimed that Mr Lynch had largely ignored Autonomy’s accounting, in evidence which was critical to his defence.
Mr Bloomer claimed: “Mike was mostly interested in the strategy, new products, new areas to look at, potential acquisitions.
“For example, he didn’t come to the audit committee and wasn’t particularly interested in the finance side.”
According to his Linkedin profile, Mr Bloomer is currently the chairman of insurance provider Hiscox and was the chief executive of Prudential before being ousted in a boardroom coup in 2005 following the dotcom crash.
Related stories, lawyer and chairman among those missing.
Salvatore Cocina, head of the Civil Protection in Sicily, said Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance and Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, were also among the missing people.
Meanwhile, Italian media said the man who died was the yacht’s onboard chef.
Bayesian’s 237ft metal mast may have played a part in the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily, experts have suggested.
The yacht, seemingly named after the mathematical theory which Mike Lynch used to make his millions in the tech industry, foundered in the small hours of Monday morning.
Key among potential reasons for the loss of the vessel will be its most striking feature – the aluminium mast.

Britain’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.
A basic assessment of the scene will be made by the team with no investigation launched at this stage, the PA news agency understands.
Mike Lynch’s co-defendant in his US fraud trial died in a road accident on Saturday days before the tycoon went missing off the coast of Sicily.
Stephen Chamberlain was hit by a car during the accident over the weekend in Cambridgeshire.
Chamberlain faced the same charges of fraud and conspiracy as his former boss Lynch for allegedly scheming to inflate the value of his company Autonomy before it was sold to Hewlett Packard.
A source told The Telegraph: “Our dear client and friend Steve Chamberlain was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running.
“He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity, and we deeply miss him. He fought successfully to clear his good name, which lives on through his wonderful family.”
“At around 4:30 in the morning it was gone. A beautiful vessel where there had been a party. A normal holiday day spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy,” a witness told Italian news agency ANSA.
He continued: “The vessel was not far from the port. It would have taken very little to raise the anchor and head for the port. Evidently they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid the sinking.”
The rescue operation for the missing six passengers will continue overnight, Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency has said.
A specialist caving search and rescue diving team has also arrived and hoped to “achieve results” overnight or early tomorrow morning, the BBC reported.
Guests were celebrating the acquittal of Mike Lynch, the British tech entrepreneur, on the superyacht Bayesian when the vessel sank off the coast of Italy.
Mr Lynch had gathered guests from Clifford Chance, the legal firm, and Invoke Capital, his own company, after being cleared in June of fraud over the multi-billion-dollar sale of Autonomy.
He was found not guilty on all counts of an accusation of inflating the value of the company, which he sold to the US tech giant Hewlett-Packard for £8.6 billion in 2011.

Francesco Venuto, the spokesman for Sicily’s civil protection agency, has told the BBC that they “think [the missing people] must be there [in the boat]”.
“We’ve been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we’ve found nothing. That wouldn’t make sense, in these conditions we should have found something by now,” he added.
According to La Repubblica, Bacares is in a wheelchair, with abrasions on her feet that prevent her from walking and bandages on other parts of her body.
The newspaper said that she told doctors that at 4am the boat tilted and she and her husband woke up.
At first, they were not worried but then there was a scene of confusion as glass shattered and everything slipped.
Mike Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is among those missing in the superyacht sinking, The Telegraph understands.
Italian media early reported that Angela Bacares, Mr Lynch’s wife, told doctors that her husband and daughter were missing.

A waterspout in Apulia, Italy, in 2024
The boat sank after a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency. One body has been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored.
The Italian coast guard said the yacht had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers.
A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored. “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Cocina said, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn’t as badly damaged and was able to rescue some of the 15 survivors.
Just weeks ago, Mike Lynch was walking out of a San Francisco courtroom a free man with tears in his eyes.
The technology tycoon known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” had improbably beaten the odds in a bitter US legal dispute with technology giant HP, convincing a jury that he was not guilty of claims of massive fraud.
Cleared after a 13-year legal fight, the entrepreneur vowed to fight to reform Britain’s extradition laws after he was flown to San Francisco to face trial and kept under house arrest.

Among the 15 survivors is a one-year-old British baby called Sofia who was saved by her mother, Charlotte Golunski.
Ms Golunski, an Oxford graduate and senior associate at Invoke, had fought to prevent her child from drowning. While all around her she could hear the screams of the terrified passengers and crew, she kept her grip on her baby to stop her from slipping beneath the waves.
The child’s mother told Republicca, the Italian newspaper: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.
“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”
Mike Lynch was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.
That same year, he was appointed to the board of the BBC, and was later elected to then-prime minister David Cameron’s council for science and technology in 2011.
He advised Mr Cameron on subjects including “the opportunities and risks of the development of artificial intelligence and the government’s role in the regulation of these technologies”.
Mr Lynch is among six tourists missing after the luxury yacht sank in bad weather off the coast of Sicily, sources said.
Four of the missing passengers are British and two are American, Italian news website la Repubblica stated.
The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is sending a team of four inspectors to conduct a “preliminary assessment” into the sinking of the Bayesian, a government spokesman said.
The Bayesian was registered in London and flew the Red Ensign, meaning UK authorities will be involved in the investigation into why she foundered.
Specialist cave divers are being flown to Sicily from the Italian mainland to assist in the search for survivors of the superyacht as hopes fade of finding any of the six alive.
Luca Cari, spokesman for the firefighting service, told The Telegraph firefighter divers from Palermo and the Sardinian towns of Cagliari and Sassari had been working tirelessly at a depth of 50 metres since the early hours of Monday morning when the alarm was sounded.
But Mr Cari said the spaces inside the luxury yacht were so small that specially trained cave divers and their equipment were required to access the cabins.
“We are working non-stop with our divers and our helicopter. But we are talking about very small confined spaces inside the yacht so we need the specialist cave divers and their equipment,” he said.
He declined to say whether divers had identified bodies through the portholes of the sunken yacht but said as time went on it was increasingly unlikely that the firefighters would find any more survivors.
Divers involved in the rescue operation for the missing passengers of the Bayesian have been captured entering the water as part of the search effort.
Three divers in orange wetsuits are seen in the water off the coast of Sicily before they commence an underwater search for those that are missing.
Mike Lynch, the British technology tycoon, is one of six tourists missing in a superyacht sinking.
Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, and made his name as one of Britain’s most influential entrepreneurs through the company.
He has been described at points as the Bill Gates of Britain, for founding the company which became one of the biggest enterprise software firms on the planet.
He negotiated an 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale of Autonomy to Hewlett Packard, which generated a more than 800 million US dollar windfall for him.
But the sale also kicked off a 13-year legal saga. It was only in June this year that Mr Lynch was cleared of charges alleging he orchestrated a fraud and conspiracy leading up to the deal, which turned into a costly albatross for HP.
He faced more than 20 years in US prison if convicted of the fraud and conspiracy allegations, and the Times reported that he spent 13 months under house arrest awaiting the trial that ended in June.
The Bayesian is 56 metres long (183ft) and has a 75m (246ft) long mast.
The vessel was in front of the port of Porticello, in the province of Palermo, when the severe weather struck.
Its anchor was down and the strong gust would have caused the vessel to lose balance which is believed to have led to the shipwreck.
Mr Lynch, 59, founded the software company Autonomy in 1996 and became one of Britain’s most high-profile businessmen when he sold it to Hewlett Packard for £7bn in 2011.
He spent more than a decade seeking to clear his name after HP accused Autonomy executives of illegal accounting practices in 2012.
Mr Lynch was charged with fraud in the US in 2018 and was found not guilty in June in a stunning legal victory. He had only recently returned to the United Kingdom and had planned to defend wrongfully convicted Britons.
Ms Bacares holds much of his fortune. The couple have had two daughters, who are 21 and 18.
A survivor leaves the coast guard headquarters after a superyacht sank at around 5am in front of Porticello in the province of Palermo on Monday.
The 50-metre vessel reportedly had mostly British nationals on board and 15 people were saved by coast guard patrol boats and firefighters, including a one-year-old child.
Earlier today the coast guard issued a statement saying it had rescued 15 people from the yacht that had 22 people onboard.
The term Bayesian refers to a branch of statistics pioneered by Thomas Bayes, an 18th century mathematician and vicar.
Much of modern artificial intelligence and computer analysis is underpinned by Bayesian inference, which involves updating the probabilities of various scenarios based on ongoing evidence.
The statistical model was crucial to Autonomy’s technology, which searched through large amounts of corporate data to find information.
In 2021, Mike Lynch said that: “Bayes deserves far more historical credit for the place he occupies among the forefathers of information theory”
Mr Lynch has often used playful naming conventions. Conference rooms at Autonomy were named after James Bond villains, another interest of his, while his dogs have named after engineering terms such as Valve, Tappet and Switch.
Dr Domenico Cipolla, head of emergency room at the Giovanni di Cristina paediatric hospital in Palermo, has described the experience of Charlotte, the British mother who was onboard the Bayesian when it sank.
DrCipolla said: “She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water.
“Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.
“She told me that she was in the water for no more than two, three seconds, and she managed to save the baby, to keep her arms up, and then, with the others, they were able to get on the lifeboat, and then, I think, they were rescued by the coast guard.
“They are all in good condition. We managed to get the parents to talk (to each other) on the phone, all the doctors and nurses were all very moved, also because the little girl is fine, the prognosis is good and we are carrying out tests just to be careful.”
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is missing after the sinking of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily, The Telegraph understands.
The captain who rescued passengers from the Bayesian has spoken to media about the ordeal.
The captain of a nearby boat that rescued the 15 people has described the conditions in which the Bayesian sank last night.
Karsten Borner said his own vessel, the Sir Robert BP, was battered by very strong gusts in the early hours of the morning, managing to stabilise it while anchored by using the engine.
He said as they were doing this, they noticed the Bayesian nearby and manoeuvred to avoid hitting it.
“We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”
The Bayesian is 56 metres long (183ft) according to ship tracking website VesselFinder.
The luxury super yacht is said to have a 75m (246ft) long mast.
She was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi with an initial asking price of 35 million euros (£30 million) according to Nautic Link.
According to the leasing company Yacht Charter Fleet, the boat is furnished with a “Japanese-style” interior.
It has been designed to accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, along with ten crew members.
The Bayesian was awarded the best exterior styling at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.
Vigili del Fuoco, Italy’s fire and rescue service, has confirmed a male body has been recovered from the yacht.
In a post on X, it said the “lifeless body of a man recovered [has been] from the wreck by the divers.”
It posted the statement alongside a clip of the rescue effort with footage showing helicopters, boats and divers carrying out a search operation.

One person has died and four British nationals are missing after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, Italian media has reported.
The 50-metre boat, which is called the “Bayesian”, sank at around 5am in the stretch of sea in front of Porticello in the province of Palermo.
The vessel reportedly had mostly British nationals on board and 15 people were saved by coast guard patrol boats and firefighters, including a one-year-old child.
The one-year-old English girl who was saved from the shipwreck has been named as Sofia, local media reports.
The Bayesian sank at around 5am in the stretch of sea in front of Porticello in the province of Palermo.
Below is a map of its journey before it went down.
A mother has told of how she kept her one-year-old daughter alive after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.
Charlotte, a survivor of the incident said her child is now being treated in the Di Cristina hospital, in Palermo, following the ordeal in which the Bayesian sank due to severe winds.
The mother, who is said to be a British tourist, told la Repubblica, a local news website: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.
“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”
Charlotte said her husband James has been taken to Civico hospital in Palermo after suffering minor injuries.
La Repubblica said that the father asked about his daughter’s health during a phone call with his wife.
According to the paper, he said: “How is the little girl? Is she there with you?”
His wife reassured him and they promised to hug each other again soon, the site reported.
Alicia Kearns, shadow foreign minister for Europe, wrote on X: “Desperately sorry to hear of the capsizing of the Bayesian - a heartbreaking incident.
“My thoughts are with all the families of those lost at sea, and those recovering following the rescue operation, I’m sure the foreign office will be providing consular support to British Nationals and their families.”
The Foreign Office said in a statement: “We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected.”
Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman from Porticello who witnessed the sinking, told ANSA: “I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly.”
He added: “I think the tornado came from Porticello. Shortly after I went down to the Bay of Santa Nicolicchia to get a better look at what was happening.
“The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes.”
A former chief stewardess of the Bayesian has described news of the yacht’s sinking as “strange” because the boat had withstood the choppiest of seas.
Monica Jensen, 48, told The Telegraph: “It seems a bit strange. We have been in bad weather with it, crossed the Atlantic.
“It’s been all over. These things definitely don’t happen very often.”
Ms Jensen worked on the 56m superyacht from November 2018 to October 2020 for a private owner and said the boat had since been sold.
She accompanied the boat on two Caribbean seasons and cruised around Italy, Malta, Greece and the Balearics.
Ms Jensen said the crew would have been well-drilled on the evacuation process.
She said: “You can’t work on a boat without the right certificates, training and you do drills monthly.”
Emergency services are pictured carrying a bodybag to shore after local media reported a man’s body had been recovered from the shipwreck off the coast of Sicily.
The Italian Coast Guard said in a statement: “This morning at about 5am, following a violent gale, a 56-metre yacht named Bayesian and flying the UK flag sank off Porticello.
“The first shipwrecked were rescued by a boat in the immediate vicinity and brought ashore by four coast guard vessels, which promptly responded to the scene from Porticello, Termini Imerese and Palermo.
“Initial information received from the yacht crew indicated that 22 people (10 crew members and 12 passengers) were onboard the yacht.
“There are currently 15 people rescued and seven missing (one crew member and six passengers), of British, American and Canadian nationality.
“Of the people recovered, eight were transported to local hospitals. The vessel is reported to have sunk on a seabed of about 50 metres.
“The search continues unabated with naval, air and underwater resources, including the Messina Coast Guard Diving Unit.”
Filippo Tripoli, the mayor of Bagheria in Sicily, said: “This morning, off the coast of Santa Flavia, a foreign boat sunk due to bad weather, 15 people recovered and seven missing.
“Already all the police forces and emergency services are operational and our Red Cross volunteers are present.”
Bartolomeo Lo Coco, who owns the Tosto Chiosco cafe in Porticello, said it was common for rental yachts and boats to sail through the fishing village, adding that the captain should not be blamed for what had occurred because the weather had been so unpredictable.
“This was a terrible misfortune that no-one could have foreseen. It is nobody’s fault, the captain should not be blamed.”
Lo Coco said Carabinieri police, coast guard and firefighters were still searching the port. He stressed that the yacht was at a depth of 50 to 60 metres.
Bartolomeo Lo Coco, who owns the Tosto Chiosco cafe in Porticello, said those in the port were in “mourning” following the deeply shocking incident.
He said no one could have predicted the storm and the whirlwind that appeared to have caused the accident.
“We are in mourning here, all of us are in mourning,” he told The Telegraph. “We have never seen anything like this, ever. There is a very serious tragedy.”
His kiosk, which serves snacks and sandwiches, overlooks the water in Porticello.
He said the whirlwind, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, had not only caused the tragic accident but also widespread damage in the port.
He added: “This wasn’t a thunderstorm, this was a whirlwind. It happened all of a sudden. There is a lot of damage here. Boats were dislodged from their moorings and restaurant tables were broken within minutes and sent flying several metres.”
The body of a man has been recovered from the seabed in the search for missing people following a shipwreck off the coast of Sicily, according to il Fatto Quotidiano.
The local news website said: “A body was found and recovered by rescuers on the seabed. Firefighters and the coast guard are looking for six other passengers, while fifteen have been rescued.”
Among the survivors is a one-year-old girl who is being treated in the Civico hospital with her mother, the site said.
According to witnesses, the vessel was in front of the port of Porticello when the severe weather struck.
The anchor was down and the strong gust would have caused the vessel to lose balance which is believed to have led to the shipwreck.
Footage shared by the BAIA Santa Nicolicchia restaurant shows the storm hit the port.
The violent weather causes damage outside the restaurant, knocking over chairs and plant pots.
The Bayesian was designed for luxury travel, according to local media.
Tgcom24 described the yacht as an “elegant 56-metre sailing boat” weighing 473 tons. It was said to be flying a United Kingdom flag when it sank.
The online newspaper said it was built by the Perini Navi Viareggio shipyard in February 2008, before being refitted in 2020.
The boat had arrived in Porticello after a stop in Milazzo and a passage in front of Cefalù, Tgcom24 reported.
Aerial footage of the search has been posted on social media by Vigili del Fuoco, Italy’s fire and rescue service.
The post on X, formerly Twitter, said: “A Palermo boat wreck off the coast of Porticello, 15 people saved, seven reported missing.
“Since dawn firefighters and divers have engaged in the search. The wreck has been identified 50 metres deep.”
The BAIA Santa Nicolicchia restaurant in Porticello wrote on its Facebook page that the yacht sank at around 4am after being caught in a hurricane.
They called it an “unbelievable tragedy”, adding that they were “lost for words”.
The post read: “Last picture I took at 10pm. The yacht on the left sank at 4.05am, caught in the middle of the hurricane 300 metres from the port of Porticello, next to another sailboat that provided rescue.
“It looks like there are 22 on board but unfortunately seven missing, they’re still afraid inside the hull.
“Unbelievable tragedy tonight. I’m out of words.”
The last photo thought to have been taken of the yacht at 10pm on Sunday in Porticello.
Four Britons are reported to be missing after a yacht sank in a stretch of sea in front of Porticello.
Seven people are missing in total, including four Britons, one Canadian, two Americans and the ship’s cook.
The vessel reportedly had mostly British nationals on board and 15 people were saved by coast guard patrol boats and firefighters, including a one-year-old child.
