About the Thistle
The Thistle is a high performance one design racing sailboat that is generally sailed with a three person crew. The Thistle Class Association is recognized as one of the largest and best one-design classes in the country.
Thistle fleets are located throughout the US and welcome new and experienced sailors. Fleet members are happy to take new Thistle sailors out sailing and help get new boat owners up to speed. Joining a fleet and crewing is an excellent way to get started in the Thistle. Instructional DVD’s also help sailors get up to speed.
The TCA publishes a top-notch magazine, the Bagpipe, which not only reports on all the class news, but often includes rigging and go-fast tips.
The class culture makes this Thistle unique. The competitive design and caliber of sailors attracts top sailors. The class also enjoys family camaraderie and often teams are comprised of family members. The Thistle is ideal for junior sailors and many regattas encourage youth participation with reduced fees for junior members.
Designed by Sandy Douglass, the Thistle debuted in 1945. The sail plan consists of a main, jib, and spinnaker. The boat planes easily in 10-12 knots of breeze yet will also glide effortlessly in light air. The class firmly believes in the one-design principles thus keeping all boats competitive.

VESSEL DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION :
THISTLE is a keel/centerboard Hinckley 48 Yawl and can sleep 8 in three cabins. This classic traditional interior has 6′ 9″ headroom in the main salon, is finished in varnished mahogany with varnished teak and holly sole and custom finished caned locker doors. She had a major refit in 2006 in preparation for offshore sailing and the stringent safety regulations of the Newport to Bermuda race. Significant updates in the refit included a new Yanmar engine, new electrical panel, new watermaker and new sails

Construction:
- One piece molded hand laid fiberglass hull. Deck, deckhouse, and cockpit are fiberglass molded in one piece with the deck balsa core molded providing a light but rigid structure. Deck is set into a 6” flange in the hull, then fiberglassed and bolted in place.
- Nonskid is painted onto the deck and the sail locker seats.
- Keel: External 10,600 lb. lead keel is fastened with Everdur bolts.
- Centerboard: Bronze 940 lb. centerboard with Hinckley worm-gear lift with override – Electric with manual back-up.

INTERIOR INTRODUCTION:
From the cockpit, the companionway steps lead down to the main cabin with the galley set to port and navigation station opposite to starboard with a full-width main salon immediately forward. The Jones and Pippins families bought Thistle 1493 in 1981 from the Parker family in Wilmington DE. She was rigged as she came from the factory with phenolic cam cleats and stiff gold mast with a wire halyard that easily turned in the a squirrels nest if you weren't careful lowering the mainsail. Over the years the rigging was updated Harken cleats and a Bryant mast and boom. She was raced competitively from DC to Annapolis and in the Delaware River with the New Castle Sailing Club until the kids got old enough the Boy Scouts and school activities began ...

This is a former class champion boat (sailed by a better sailor than me!). Below the waterline is glassed and painted. The rest of the boat is all varnished mahogany except the rails, which are mahogany with a Purple Heart outer rail. The rails have recently been re-varnished and look great! The rest of the wood is subjected less to the ravages of the sun and is in good shape. Thistle 3939, northwest one design builder (2000 year ). Bought was bought in 2015 and raced maybe 4 regattas, stored in barn entire Time. Hull 3059 I believe it is a Clark but not positive. Clean complete boat with cover. Current title in hand for boat. Trailrite trailer no title. Prior to me owning it they left it in a yacht club storage yard so no need to register the trailer and one of the prior owners lost the title and it was not important to them to register the trailer.
