Trintella Yachts

Founded by Anne Wever who, in colaboration with famed designer Van de Stadt built the very successful line of steel hulled cruisers, the Trintels. (I & II) In 1961 they became the first yard in Europe to use the GRP construction methods. The resulting 8.5m yacht, another Van de Stadt design, was launched in 1964 and marked the birth of the Trintella name. From the late-60s to the mid-70s, with the Trintella IIIa, IV and V, the yachts developed a centre cockpit design with a small rear poop deck reminiscent of old galleons, but in 1976 the Trintella 38 was launched, with a near-flush deck and more modern hull profile. Production continued in GRP and the range kept growing in size - right up to the Trintella 53 in 1980. At the start of the 1980s, the decision was taken to change the emphasis of the Trintella line. After further design meetings with Van de Stadt, the lines of the first aluminium yacht - the 40A - were drawn, and in 1983 the yard entered the world of semi-custom building with this model. The design also heralded a shift in the styling of the Trintellas, featuring a stylish doghouse and giving the yachts a distinctive profile that has become the trademark of the modern Trintella range. Through the mid-1980s the yachts gradually got larger; in 1986 the 75A was the largest production yacht built. But 1988 saw the end of an era, as after nearly 36 years at the helm, Anne Wever decided it was time to retire. In 1994 Trintella once again took the lead at the forefront of boatbuilding technology with the construction of a composite Trintella-Holland 47. The 47 marked the start of a new partnership with the Ron Holland design office and the range has been updated to considerable acclaim from the yachting press. In 2003 production was moved to Hamble, UK and Trintella Yachts became part of the Hamble Yacht Services Group. In 1994 Trintella approached designer Ron Holland and began a collaboration which would shape the future of Trintella Yachts. The new book: ‘Trintella Yachts, Holland’s splendour from Brabant’, depicts a wonderful image of the developments of a shipyard in ‘s Hertogenbosch. They have built sea worthy, luxurious sailing yachts since 1952, with a lot of passion and workmanship. Although the activities of the yard ceased in 2002, the brand name Trintella will live on while we maintain these durable yachts. TO ORDER:

TRINTELLA 29

trintella 29 sailboatdata

https://www.oycoa.org.uk/offshore-yachts/trintella-29/review.php

Trintella I must be accounted one of the greatest of E. G. Van de Stadt’s many fine designs. Her speed and seaworthiness have been amply proved. Over 200 have been built during three years of continuous development. Trintella I was designed first and foremost as a family cruising boat. Two people can handle her easily under all normal conditions and she has no vices at all. Her long keel gives her good directional stability and she can be sailed efficiently with any of the self-steering gears currently in production. Her construction is tough and thorough as the specification shows. Reinforced GRP is used for the Tyler hull and the one-piece deck moulding built under Lloyd’s supervision. Joinery, both above and below decks, is in satin finished oiled teak or afromosia – pleasant to live with, taking the starkness out of the modern construction techniques used.

Performance

Trintella I is a fast yacht, but not an out and out racing boat. Her hull design speed is about 7 knots, and she will consistently sail up to this. Recent examples of fast passages include one by ‘Petrella’, a boat built in 1969, which sailed from Falmouth to Antigua in 29 days. A Trintella won the 1969 round Bute race, a highly competitive event with 35 starters, sailed in stiff conditions. Under power she will punch along at 6 knots in still water. The 8 HP Sabb engine is smooth and notably free from vibration periods.

Below decks

IMG_20171210_081517

Teak louvered doors lead into the main saloon companion way. One of the many small details where special attention has been paid to finish. Trintella I has full standing headroom throughout the saloon and in the heads. There is sitting headroom in the forecabin-both cabins having access to the heads. Double headlining mouldings extend the whole length of the interior with a foam insulation ‘sandwich’ between, virtually eliminating condensation. Special attention is paid to ventilation. On the port hand is a permanent ‘man sized’ chart table with a deep shelf for almanacks and so forth. To starboard is the galley with sink and gimballed gas cooker, available with oven at no extra cost. Crockery is held in shelves with fiddle strips. The advantage of this galley layout is that the ‘mate’ gets plenty of light and air and can still keep in contact with the skipper.

IMG_20171210_075329

Trintella I is a sound investment. She will hold her value almost indefinitely. Original equipment from the best suppliers in the industry includes nearly all those necessary items often shown as extras on other yachts.

My wife and I put in an offer on a Trintella 29 in Seattle, WA and are doing our sea trials Friday. I'd appreciate any information you might have on the boat. I'm confused on where it was built and by whom, Anne Weaver or Tyler. I'm also wondering about the deck stepped mast and teak overlays. Are you aware of any problems with either. Are the decks solid glass or are they cored? And the hull? Also, is her handling under power any more difficult than other full keelers? Is there anything else I should know... It is difficult to find any information over here in Washington State. Andrew <hr width=100% size=1>

That's a nice boat. I went up to see it last weekend and was quite impressed. I decided that I wasn't quite ready to jump on it, though. Guess it's not going to wait around for me to get ready! A fellow on the board here sent me a nice magazine review of the Trintella 29, send me some email and I'll forward it along to you. Have fun with it! --Derek <hr width=100% size=1>

I have now had two boats with deck stepped masts and have never found it to be a problem from the safety point of view. A word of caution and please understand that my old boat was not a Trintella. The problems that I found were as follows: The mast sits on a compression tube which has a plate on the top. This is all below deck. If water seeps through onto the plate, and the post is made of mild steel over time this will corrode and the tube then needs replacing. It cost about £500 to do this for a 36 footer in UK. Early sign of this sort of a problem may be slight distortion in the deck area around the mast foor, but it is as well to take the head lining down and have a look to see what sort of a state the plate is in. The other problem that I had was the mast heel bracket, which sits on the deck. Mine cracked and had to be replace, again this was not a terrifically expensive job, but have a good look, and if you have sensitive fingers feel, all over htis area to make sure it is sound. The only problem I have ever heard off with teak decks is that they need replacing in due course, and how long that is is a function of how well the boat was built in the first place. Good sailing. <hr width=100% size=1>Chris Stannard

I.ve located the web site of the Dutch Trintella owners circle. I can imagine it's difficult to locate for non-Dutch. Here it is: http://home.hccnet.nl/j.vanden.burg/ukindex.html This is the English version of the site. I'm sure they will be delighted to give you all the info you might want. Trintella 29s were built by Anne Weaver in Holland and moulded by Tylers, fitted out by Offshore Yachts, in the UK. Also built by others elsewhere in Europe, I believe. They are very solid boats with a good reputation. Don't worry about the deck stepped mast. Comments already posted are valid but the Trintellas are sound in this department. The hull and decks are solid GRP. When you talk of teak overlays, do you mean teak laid decks or the veneers below decks? Teak laid decks will, if original, almost certainly be getting to the end of their lives. I have no information about the longevity of the internal joinery other than that the boat has a good reputation for durability in this department. Some general information: She was designed by EG van de Stadt in 1967. The Dutch models tend to be called Trintella 1, British boats Trintella 29. She was a popular design found throught European waters. She has a reputaion for being a good seaboat but is not particularly quick in the light stuff. Long keel gives good handling under sail but she is not particularly easy in a tight marina with astern being a bit hit and miss. A number in the UK were fitted out by amateurs from sets of mouldings, and these need to be looked at closely. <hr width=100% size=1>JJ

Thanks for the information. My concern is around the teak decks, insofar as they seem to create the opportunity for a lot of water penetration. With a past history of rebuilding a wood boat I can handle changing the decks when their time comes. I want to be sure the glass underneath is sound. I'll assume that since they are solid glass without core the chance for serious rot is decreased or eliminated. As to the builders, I'm still confused. Where the hulls laid up in Kent by Tyler and sent to Anne Weavers yard? Could you provide more info on the building parnership. Thanks <hr width=100% size=1>

Hi Andrew - If you go to www.seacracker.org you may get some additional info. The site mainly relates to the Trintella 11a/Seacracker 33 (same Van Der Stadt boat) but also has info on other models and the guy that runs the site may be able to point you in the direction of other sources. I looked at a 33 about 2 years ago & it seemed a very solid seaworthy boat. The fellow that runs the website (Humperdink) told me about a 29 for sale at the time so he is interested in all types from that designer. Good luck - we ended up with a Sadler 32 in the end and have been very happy with her - she's proven to be a very strong, seaworthy boat capable of being lived on for some months by a couple (as we did). <hr width=100% size=1>

I have a short report on the Trintella 29, says a fast passage-maker with an enviable reputation. As James said there were two builders of the boat, in Holland it was Anne Weavers, who I assume both laid up the hull and completed construction. In the UK Tylers moulded (laid up) lots of different designers boats, including many Van de Statt designs. The hulls were then sent to boatyards to be completed and Offshore Yachts completed many of them. The hull could also be purchased direct from Tylers for home completion, so there will be a few home completed boats. From what James says about numbering system I would assume yours is a Tylers hull, probably completed by Offshore Yachts. The boats have a excellent reputation in the UK as reguards quality of construction and sailability. Good Luck. Paul <hr width=100% size=1>

Long Keelers Going Astern I'd agree with almost everything written in the thread, and James Jermain is on the mark 100%. They're good and can be very fast in the right conditions. As to manoevering astern, they suffer as do many long keelers. The 29 is somewhat different from my Seacracker (Trintella IIb) but many long keeled boats have almost impossible control in astern. Mine included. For the first year I would back out of my marina slip and do various pirouettes and so forth,. The problem was, I needed to be turning to my starboard in astern, but the prop walk is so strong that the best I could achieve was often a slight turn to my port. Slowing her down enabled me to go straight astern, although I was holding the rudder over to even do this. So one weekend I thought about the problem. IF prop walk is the cause, then I realised the key was to start by going straight, get some momentum, then put the prop into neutral. Voila. Perfect manoeuvrability every time. Works perfectly. Once she's "turned the corner" then it's into forward and off we go. The hidden advantage is that the prop is already stopped when engaging forward gear, so this is much kinder on the gearbox. As the whole manoeuvre is now also quite silent, it looks like some slick seamanship. I've tried this on other "impossible" boats and won lots of friends! Try it and let me know. Just one odd thing: I've not read of this on any of the sailing forums on the web. Surely this can't be an original solution? Have fun - and don't be afraid of sailing her in a blow. I took my boat for a long sail in 58 knot wind (true wind that is) in March and we had a lovely day sailing! Regards, Humperdinck [email protected] ps. http://www.seacracker.org/article_109.htm - an short article about a '29 sailing in Scotland for three weeks. Makes me want one! <hr width=100% size=1>

Weavers Had all their mouldings from Tyler - talk to the Dutch Trintella owners association. Enormously loyal owners, you'll find them all over the world, frequently on 3/4th round-world trip - Weavers still hold a regular get-together for their fans. One of the world's classic builders. <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: Long Keelers Going Astern Hey this sounds a good idea , I have a Trintella IIB and just after one an a half years renovation its back in the sea here in Perros Guirec , having not sailed it before going astern out of the berth is like a lottery and a hazard to adjacent boats!, I am going to try your metod next week end , I might even look slick for once , thanks <hr width=100% size=1>

If you go to the following site there are details of the Trintella 29, they were built by Offshore yachts. http://www.oycoa.org.uk/trintell.htm There are 5 currently owned by association members so they should be able to help with any details. Brian <hr width=100% size=1>

the English ones were moulded by Tylers of Tonbridge ( Kent) & fitted-out by Offshore Yachts ( Royston Hertfordshire) i actually fitted- out the Trintella 1 ( 29 ft) from about 1965 > 67. i was in a team of 3 the 2 others still live in the area. you might get further info from the "Halcyon" owners club these were other classes of boats built <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: Long Keelers Going Astern It used to be a well-known solution for long keel boats, especially with wing engines. Perhaps it's fallen out of favour as people have become accustomed to modern boats? I still use it regularly and agree that it's a very useful trick. <hr width=100% size=1>

Deck stepped Mast Do check by looking along the deck externally to make sure there is NO distortion or dropping of the deck. If there is then you must look below. Some boats relied on their bulkheads without a mast compression post. This meant that the bearing surface below the mast was too small and it could compress into the glass/wood block under the mast. <hr width=100% size=1>

Review of Trintella 29

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Trintella 29 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.30 - 1.40 meter (4.27 - 4.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Perkins diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Trintella 29 is 1.60, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Trintella 29 is about 109 kg/cm, alternatively 612 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 109 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 612 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 14.51

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 12m 2 (129 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Broker's Comments

This Trintella is testament to the way boats used to be built in the 1960's. She has not long come out of an extensive refit, including complete awlgrip treatment, engine overhaul/service, new rudder stock, new dodgers, new No 1 Genoa (Arun), all canvass serviced/cleaned. The hull has a deep lustre and looks wonderful. This has to be one of the best Trintella's on the water today.

This boat has pretty, traditional lines and the deep blue colour of the hull makes her stand out. The single berths are larger than one would expect and the generous headroom makes the saloon comforatble. The nav' station has been well thought out and has everything within arms reach.

This Trintella will suit a couple, or a single handed sailer, who are looking for a boat with good performance and excellent sea keeping qualities. With the investment that has been made in her, she looks set to be still sailing in another 30 years.

Trintella III en IIIa

Trintella iii.

The III was the first of the real cruising ships made by Trintella. The yacht offers much well thougt through spaceThe big diesel tanks (2x400l.) and water tank make her very suitable for long distance travels. Unique is the large deep cockpit, and offers the helmsman optimal protectionagainst the elements. There were sloop and ketch rigged versions built of the III. Originally there were two interior layouts. One hasa kitchen in the length of the ship and chart table on starboard,a dinette at portside, a toiletroom anda double bedin front. The other verrsion hasa kitchen on portsidagainst the rear bulkhead, a chart table on starboard, two couches in the length of the ship, a toiletroom and a sailstoragein front. Some layouts also have a bed behind the charttablel. The aftercockpit offers place to 2-3 persons.

Later (around 1977) the German architect Gräfe designed a new interior for himself. That was a great succes, and was copied by the wharf several times . This Gräfe layout combined the best of the other two; with the toiletroom and double bed in front, two couches in the middle and the L- shaped kitchen on portside and with the chart table on starboard side

Trintella IIIa

The difference between the III and the IIIa is the model of the aftercockpit. Some like this Spanish galloen shape very much others think it is ugly. The fact is that the owner got a sun platform outside and a largespace inside. The IIIa is mainly built as a ketch, only 3 exemples left the wharf as slooprigged. The interiors are the same as the III. There are also IIIa's in Gräfe layout. With the dinette on portside and a kitchen. There is a couch and the charttable on srarboard side, and the toiletroom and a double bed at the front. The ships that are supplied with a cockpit tent, have a hughe space outside, especcially in bad weather. The Perkins engines have a very long life, but some owners have had problems with the hydraulic Paragon inverter. The IIIa is mainly build in a ketch rigging, only 3 left the yard as a sloop. The interiors ware equal to the III, also with the threee differert interior layouts.

  6. Opinions on Trintella 29 (1980)

Had my eye on an Albin Vega 27 down in England, when I found this Trintella 29 very close to home in Scotland: 1980 Trintella 29 Sloop for sale - YachtWorld. Performance. Trintella I is a fast yacht, but not an out and out racing boat. Her hull design speed is about 7 knots, and she will consistently sail up to this. Recent examples of fast passages include one by 'Petrella', a boat built in 1969, which sailed from Falmouth to Antigua in 29 days.

  9. Trintella 29

Summary. Van de Stadt Trintella 29 (1976) Long Keel Yacht. Betamarine 13.5hp diesel engine (2006). Mainsail and furling genoa (both new 2007). Storm jib (2009). Four berths. 10. Trintella

The l/b ratio for Trintella 29 is 3.52. Wide Slim 90% 0 50 100. Compared with other similar sailboats it is slimmer than 90% of all other designs. It seems that the designer has chosen a significantly more speedy hull design. This type of design is also referred to as 'needle'. Ballast Ratio.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
