Neighborhood Profile: Westshore Yacht Club, Tampa

Anne Marie Campbell, Sam Giunta and all their worldly belongings just fit — albeit snugly — in their 1,300-square-foot Bayshore Boulevard condominium.

It was tight but they made it work — until Campbell retired from her human resources job and brought her things home from the office. That little bit of stuff tripped the tilt button, busted out the seams. No more room. Too crowded.

They started looking around for something bigger in South Tampa where Giunta, a semiretired CPA, has spent his entire life, and where Campbell has lived for decades. They like it there.

One day, they plucked a brochure out of their mailbox from Westshore Yacht Club, a gated community of 350 homes, townhomes and condos nestled just south of the Gandy Bridge on Old Tampa Bay, about 5 miles from where they were living. They went to see it and ended up buying a "fee simple" townhouse, which means they own the land on which it sits.

Their home was yet to be built, good news because that meant they could choose many of its interior features, bad news because they had nowhere to live after their Bayshore condo sold in two days (at more than their asking price).

That was 2012. The housing market was still in a slump. They got a bargain, buying their place for about $290,000, considerably less than other places they checked out. And it would be new construction, something Campbell longed for.

After moving in, they say what they like best about the community — after their neighbors, of course — are the amenities available to residents.

There are two pools — one for families, one for adults — that are heated year-round. There's a spa with massage rooms and a nail salon. There is an exercise room where you can look out over the bay as you work up a sweat. There's a full restaurant and a couple of bars. The wait staff meanders among the sunbathers around the pool to take drink orders. It's like living in a resort.

But those luxuries come at a price. Giunta and Campbell said they pay about $10,000 a year in fees for membership in the neighborhood associations and the Bay Club. In addition to exterior upkeep, they get cable, water, insurance and a guard at the gate for that money.

Campbell said it's about the same as they would pay on their own. "If people sit down and do their homework, they'd find the cost of insurance, cable, whatever it costs to join a fitness center . . . they all add up."

It's a short walk straight out their front door to the Bay Club, past the homes of professional athletes, MacDill brass and other local celebrities. The club is an opulent building whose old-money feel belies its relatively young age.

This weekday afternoon, the restaurant and bars are closed and there are only a few people in the pools, but the weather and the sweeping views of the bay and the 149-slip marina are fabulous.

There's not much for sale, but 54 condos are planned near the 15-story tower on the north end of the development. Interested? Get your dibs in. They get scooped up in a hurry.

Westshore Yacht Club is a 149-slip marina on Old Tampa Bay that can accommodate vessels up to 130' LOA. The marina has a deep-water depth of 12 feet. Additionally, our marina offers a variety of shore power options including: 1x20AMP, 1x30AMP, 2x30AMP, 1x50AMP, 2x50AMP, and 100 Phase 1. The marina has secured gated access for your convenience and peace of mind.

Westshore Yacht Club is loaded with amenities including a salon/spa, swimming pool, fitness center, and health club directly on the property for all your pampering needs. Westshore Yacht Club Marina

Situated within a 52-acre, master-planned community, the Westshore Yacht Club Marina is one of the only primarily in-water boat docking marinas in south Tampa. In addition to onsite marina offerings, boaters are afforded access to the community’s active clubhouse and resort-style amenities.

Acquired in 2020, the marina includes 147 wet slips accommodating vessels between 40 and over 100 feet, with unobstructed access to Old Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Stay away from this Marina. Charged us for a full month for 2 days. They promote amenities which you have to pay additional for and are not even part of the marina. Ben (Harbor Master) told us he would take care of paperwork for our arriving crew and access to the amenities. He did not and left for the weekend. Moving our boat now that another marina is opened up.

I lived at Westshore Yacht Club once upon a time and loved it. We gravitated toward the pool with the pool bar on a weekly basis - just sitting in front of the water, boats and enjoying the location. It's a gated community, which was a huge perk.

Just behind me in this photo is the neighborhood gym, overlooking the pool and water. Gorgeous sunsets.

If I could rate at less than one star, I would. We were having our boat moved into the country and had reached out to the marina mid October to check slip availability during the middle of October of this year. We were told there would be a slip available to us and that they would put a hold on it. No mention of paying for the slip at that time was made and that we would just . Because of the weather (Hurricane Ian), we had to delay our move of the boat to the end of October and communicated that to the marina. They told us that that would be no problem. A few days after that communication, we received a call from them stating that if we wanted the slip we would have to pay them immediately or the slip would be given away. That is understandable.....what is not understandable is that they told us that we would have to pay for the entire month of October (over $3k) and that would have included roughly 25 days that we would be paying for without are boat even being at the marina. Because there were no other marina spaces available, we had to go ahead and enter into an agreement with them because we had no other choices. When our boat finally arrived on October 27th, we flew to Tampa. When we arrived, we were unable to use any of the amenities that we has paid a whole month for because the "didn't have us set up in the system" yet. That's $3k down the drain and no one seemed to care to work with us at all. Having said that, we received a call from the Harborage Marina because they had us on a waiting list. Suffice to say, we moved our boat immediately. We know a lot of folks in the boating community and would never recommend this marina to anyone. Save yourself some heartache.

Nice place. Beautiful view of the marina. Lamb Pops.....delicious. Nice flavor and cooked just right. I highly recommend them. Seared Tuna.....delicious. Cooked rare. Just amazing flavor and texture. Poppy seed crusted. The Wasabi sauce is very good. Eggplant Fries.....very tasty. Lightly breaded. The food was wonderful. The service was great. There weren't many people there and it is a "clubhouse" type situation. Not a place that I would seek out to go to unless I was in the area.

I am a local photographer and this is the second wedding I've done at this venue. I always let my brides know how amazing the staff are and how beautiful the grounds look. Amy is the Wedding Cordinator at this venue and she totally rocks!!! The food is amazing!!!
