Breaking news, video captures the moment 160-foot ‘007’ superyacht sinks in greece.

Sunken but not stirred.

Footage captured the calamitous moment that a massive superyacht named “007” sank — with five passengers inside — in Greece

The maritime disaster occurred Friday night after the 160-foot vessel, which reportedly sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman, experienced a GPS malfunction off Kythos Island, SWNS reported. This reportedly prompted the captain to bring it closer to shore than was advisable.

As a result, the James Bond-themed luxury boat hit the rocks, and began taking on water with five passengers inside.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that’s how the ship got to that position,” explained a boat owner who witnessed the catastrophe.

Accompanying footage, uploaded to YouTube, shows the swanky vessel, which sports a helipad, lying half-sunken on its side around 50 feet from the nearby Kolona Beach.

The pleasure cruiser hit the rocks off Kythos Island, Greece at around 11pm on Friday.

Thankfully, all five passengers were rescued and transported to safety before the “007” sank. “No people were hurt,” described the aforementioned eyewitness. “The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night.”

Rescuers also erected an anti-pollution perimeter in the area, although there was reportedly “no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery,” the bystander said.

The luxury vessel boasted a helipad, five cabins including a master suite, and other features befitting its James Bond namesake.

Local authorities will launch a probe into the sinking of the “007,” which was delivered in 2006 by the Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht, but whose owner remains unknown.

Along with a helipad, the superyacht reportedly boasts five cabins, including a master suite, and can reportedly sleep ten people.

This isn’t the first time a luxury vessel has visited Davy Jones’ locker of late. Last month, heart-pounding footage emerged of a 130-foot superyacht capsizing and sinking stern-first into the water off the Italian coast.

In February, a Ukrainian man was arrested for partially sinking his Russian tycoon boss’s $7.7 million luxury super yacht in Spain in protest over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The pleasure cruiser hit the rocks off Kythos Island, Greece at around 11pm on Friday.

James Bond-Themed Superyacht Called '007' Sinks Within Yards of Greek Beach

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore," a boat owner who watched the event unfold said of the captain's actions

Five passengers aboard a superyacht named in honor of British superspy James Bond had to be rescued after it capsized and began sinking yards away from a Greek beach Friday.

The 160-foot superyacht named "007" experienced a GPS malfunction around 50 feet from the beaches of Kolona Bay on the Mediterranean island of Kythnos, SWNS reported.

"They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom," a boat owner said about the vessel's captain, per SWNS

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that's how the ship got to that position." Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident, added SWNS.

"The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night," the local continued, per SWNS.

"Next morning they put an antipollution perimeter," the boat owner continued. "It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery."

According to SuperYacht Times , the "007" was developed by Aegean Yachts in 2006 and can accommodate up to 10 people. It also has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

In true James Bond style, however, the identity of the owner has not been revealed.

The sinking of the 007 follows the demise of a 131-foot superyacht named My Saga, which capsized nine miles off the coast of Catanzaro, Italy in August.

Shocking footage released by the Italian coast guard showed the vessel sinking stern-first near the Catanzaro Marina.

According to the BBC , "the Italian coast guard rescued all nine people on board – four passengers and five crew. The outlet reported the ship was heading from Gallipoli to Milazzo.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing and it is still unclear what caused the yacht to sink.

007 superyacht sinks in greece

Salvage operation underway for grounded 49m superyacht 007 in Greece

A salvage operation is underway to remove the 49-metre Aegean Yacht 007  from her current resting place in the waters of Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece.  The yacht was hoisted into an upright position in the early hours of March 21, and a post by the mayor of Kythnos, Mr Stamatios Garderis, said "it's a matter of hours to remove 007 ". The salvage operation began on March 6.

Prior to the removal, the semi-submerged superyacht had been in the same spot since she ran aground and listed in the late hours of  September 2 2022. It is understood that the incident occurred when the yacht struck an underwater obstacle as a result of a failure in the navigation system and began to take on water. Allegedly, she was then deliberately grounded to avoid sinking in deep water.

The local Coast Guard confirmed she was resting on shallow rocks around 15 metres from the shoreline.

Authorities were quick to contain any potential pollution or debris within a floating sea wall but the extent of the damage to the local area is not yet known. At the time of the incident, five passengers were safely rescued from the yacht.

007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht as a 32 metre yacht. She has been extended twice since delivery, bringing her total LOA up to 49 metres.

The fate of the superyacht is still not known.

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

A superyacht named ‘007’ has suffered a dramatic sinking in Greece.

It doesn’t, at first glance, appear to be a scene from a new James Bond film, but instead an unlucky coincidence.

The 150ft vessel ran aground off the island of Kythnos on Friday night.

According to local reports, five people onboard were rescued by Coast Guard and transported to safety.

The luxury yacht, which has a helipad, was seen lying semi-submerged on its side about 50ft from Kolona Beach.

Anti-pollution barriers have been put in place in case of fuel leakage.

A local boat owner said: ‘They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom.

‘In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than ten metres depth, and that’s how the ship got to that position. No people were hurt.

A 160ft James Bond-themed superyacht named 007 has sunk just yards off a Greek beach.

The vessel, which is thought to be owned by a Swiss businessman but was sailing under a British flag, ran aground after hitting rocks just 49ft off the picturesque Kolona Bay on the island of Kythnos.

The boat's GPS allegedly malfunctioned and led the boat towards the shore before it started listing heavily on the port side as water started pouring in.

Coast Guard answered mayday calls and the five passengers on board were quickly rescued after it started sinking on Friday evening. By Saturday, the yacht was almost fully submerged.

A superyacht named 007 has sunk after running aground off an island on Friday.

The 49-metre long vessel hit rocks off the Greek island of Kythnos and was seen lying on its side in the sea after the five passengers on board were rescued.

The James Bond-themed luxury yacht, which has a helipad, was seen lying semi-submerged about 15 metres from Kolona Beach, The Sun reports.

The boat hit rocks around 11pm on Friday and water then poured in as rescuers scrambled to get passenger on to another vessel and ashore.

The GPS reportedly malfunctioned and according to a local boat owner, the skipper then brought the vessel closer to shore.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than ten metres depth, and that’s how the ship got to that position,” he said.

“No people were hurt. The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night. Next morning they put up an anti-pollution perimeter.

“It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery.”

The boat sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman.

Anti-pollution barriers have been put in place in case of fuel leakage.

Local authorities will now conduct an investigation into the incident.

The 007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht but who owns it remains a mystery.

It has five cabins, including a master suite, and can sleep ten people.

The vessel was originally 32 metre long and called Royal Enterprise but underwent an extension.

It comes after the 39-metre superyacht My Saga sank off the coast of Italy after it was battered by a storm.

Nine people were rescued from the submerging vessel on Saturday as it sunk in the Gulf of Squillace, off the coast of Catanzaro.

Dramatic footage shows the superyacht on the water for a few moments before it completely sinks stern-first.

An investigation to determine what caused the vessel to sink has been launched.

This is the astonishing moment a spy-themed superyacht dubbed "007" sank off the coast of Greece.

The vessel was carrying five passengers when it ran aground near Kolona Bay on the island of Kythnos.

The coastguard rapidly responded to a mayday call and rescued the five people on board the boat.

Shocking images showed the superyacht keeling over after it hit some rocks under the waterline, the Daily Star reports.

The British-flagged vessel is believed to be owned by a Swiss businessman.

It was just 45 metres from the shore when it ran aground.

MailOnline reports that the boat had reportedly been led astray by its GPS, but soon began to lean heavily to one side as water flooded in through the damaged area.

The incident took place on Friday (September 2), and the boat had almost entirely sunk by the following day.

Adorned with the logo of Ian Flemming’s 007, the 10-person boat also had room for five crew.

The sinister-looking ship had an aluminium structure and a steel hull, although it wasn’t enough to prevent the catastrophic rock damage.

Fit for a Bond villain, it even had its own helipad.

Built in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yachts, it was hemmed in by the coastguard, which used a floating sea wall to trap it in place and stop it or any pollutants from floating off.

Officials are currently investigating.

According to the Superyacht times , it is the largest ship Aegean makes, and was sold in 2012.

The yacht capsized on Friday, although it remains unclear how the 49-metre vessel ran aground

Superyacht 007  has sunk off the coast of Greece, according to the local coast guard. Footage has been circulating on social media throughout the weekend of the stricken yacht, which is lying on its side in shallow waters off Kolona Bay in Kythnos.

The 49-metre vessel ran aground on Friday evening and reportedly took on water before capsizing. Reports say 007 is currently semi-submerged and awaiting recovery around 15 metres off the coast. The coast guard says that five passengers were rescued, and there are no reported injuries. Search and rescue teams have installed a boom around the yacht to prevent pollution from spreading around the local environment.

In a statement, the Hellenic Coast Guard says: “In the evening hours of Friday, the Port Authority of Kythnos was informed by the Unified Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue LS-EL.AKT. that the yacht 007 of the flag of Great Britain has run aground in the sea area of Kolona Bay, Kythnos with five foreign passengers.

The E/P vessel DELTA II T. Saronicou 4760 rushed to the area with a member of the relevant Port Authority on board, where it located the above semi-submerged T/C, at a distance of approximately 15 meters from the western side of the sandy beach of Kolona Bay. The passengers, all in good health, transferred to the auxiliary boat and were then transferred to the port of Merichas in Kythnos.”

There are some conflicting reports about how the yacht ran aground in the first place. An analysis by eSysman suggests that the captain may have chosen to ground the vessel after it hit rocks, to prevent it from sinking under the water. Meanwhile, Greek outlet Cyclades24 suggests that the GPS failed, leading the boat to run aground in the shallows before breaching and taking on water.

A towing company is now on the scene in Kythnos, and is establishing how to safely remove the superyacht from the scene.

007 was launched as Amazon A by Turkish shipyard Aegean Yacht , in 2006. The vessel was originally 32m long but has been extended to 49m in a series of modifications, which included an extra deck and helipad.

In August, superyacht M/Y Saga sank off the coast of northern Italy , after the crew reported the vessel taking on water at the stern.

Dramatic footage of the scene shared by the  coast guard shows the 39.4-metre superyacht tilting heavily to starboard, as the waves crash against the decks. And, in June, a Custom Line Navetta 26 superyacht sank off the coast of Seferihisar, in western Turkey, after taking on water.

49m motor yacht 007   has been reported sunk in Greece. The incident occurred near the Greek island of Kythnos over the weekend of 3/4th September. Local news outlets have reported that the Syros Port Authority has attended the scene and no injuries or loss of life have been recorded. The vessel apparently hit rocks after navigating into the bay at night.

The below clip shows the vessel in its semi-submerged state, with MARPOL anti-pollution barriers surrounding it. It has been reported by local media that it is not leaking pollutants at this stage.

A full statement from the Greek Coast Guard says:

In the evening hours of Friday, the Port Authority of Kythnos received information from the Unified Center for the Coordination of Search and Rescue Operations Λ.Σ.-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ. five foreign passengers. The vessel Ε/Π σκάφος “ΔΕΛΤΑ ΙΙ” Τ.Σαρωνικού 4760 rushed to the area with an employee of the relevant port authority on board, where it found the above vessel half-submerged, at a distance of about 15 meters from the western side of the sandy beach of Kolonas Bay. The passengers, all in good health, were transferred to a support boat and then taken to the port of Merihas. The port of Kythnos is conducting a preliminary investigation, and no pollution of the marine environment has been observed since the incident.

007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yachts, at an LOA of 32m. Subsequently, it underwent multiple refits to extend its LOA to 49m. None of these extensions were undertaken at the Aegean yard.

superyacht 007 sinks Greece

In what feels like a never-ending run of disaster stories this year, a 49m superyacht – known as 007 – has capsized and is now semi-submerged in Greece, 15m off shore, awaiting recovery (2 Sept 2022).

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, five passengers were rescued. No one was hurt. The incident took place at Kolona Bay, Kythnos.

Media reports suggest that the superyacht ran aground on Friday evening, causing an inflow of water that gradually tilted the vessel.

The coast guard answered mayday calls and found the vessel in a semi-submerged state.

According to Cyclades24 , there was failure in the GPS and the boat ran aground in the shallows, a breach was created and there was a large inflow of water causing 007 to lean on its side into the sea. This has yet to be confirmed.

An alternative report from eSysman suggests the captain deliberately tried to ground the vessel to stop it from sinking after it hit the rocks.

The Greek media outlet also says no marine pollution was caused and procedures for removal have already started. A towing company has arrived in Kythnos and is considering how to tow the ultra-luxury boat.

007 was launched as Amazon A by the Turkish shipyard Aegean Yacht in 2006. She was originally 32m long but has since been modified extensively to 49m.

“Shaken, stirred or on the rocks Mr. Bond?” asks one commentator.

Earlier in August, MIN reported on the sinking of a 39m yacht in Italy, and prior to that the 26m Kapky sank off the Turkish coast . A 49m schooner also sank in June after being hit by a supply vessel in a Spanish port.

An investigation into the superyacht sinking in Greece has begun.

Divers make major finding that could solve mystery behind sinking of yacht that killed British billionaire Mike Lynch

Divers make major finding that could solve mystery behind sinking of yacht that killed British billionaire Mike Lynch

The 19 august bayesian yacht sinking saw seven people out of 22 on board die, including british businessman mike lynch.

Britt Jones

Divers travelling to the wreck of the Bayesian yacht have retrieved a vital component which could possibly help explain why it sank, it has been reported.

Seven of the 22 passengers and crew on board the gigantic 56-metre luxury yacht died after the ship sank at around 5.00am local time on 19 August.

According to reports, this was after the boat encountered a tornado approximately half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello.

British businessman , Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo and chef Recaldo Thomas were all confirmed to have died in the sinking.

Lynch, who was known as the 'British Bill Gates' after founding software company Autonomy in 1996, was reported to have been celebrating after being cleared of conducting fraud on an £8.64 billion sale to US firm Hewlett Packard.

As of now, three crew members, which include the ship’s captain James Cutfield, are all currently under investigation by Italian authorities for manslaughter.

In a press conference, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said that his office had opened the investigation as 'behaviours that were not perfectly in order' could have been the reason why seven people died, but added that all possible lines of inquiry were being considered.

Under Italian law, being under investigation also doesn't imply any guilt or that further charges will be issued - and there may be more people under investigation.

Since then, divers from the Italian Navy have been visiting the wreck on behalf of the prosecutor's office, with a source telling Reuters that they have discovered video surveillance cameras fixed to the wreckage which could possibly help explain the reason for the sinking.

According to a report on Friday (13 August), a team of divers from the Italian Navy retrieved parts of the deck along with video surveillance equipment, which includes hard drives and computers.

This evidence will now be analysed in specialised labs outside of Sicily to recover any potential data, the source further claimed.

The divers made several 40 minute dives down to the yacht via a hyperbaric chamber, Coast Guard official, Daniele Governale, said, Reuters reports.

The Coast Guard has also taken underwater images with a remotely operated vehicle to sketch up a plan to raise the wreck, the outlet also says.

CCTV footage from the night of the sinking showed a clip of the yacht before it 'vanished in 60 seconds'.

And passenger Matthew Griffiths also spoke about what happened the day the ship went down.

According to Italian news agency Ansa, he said: "I woke up the captain when the wind was at 23 mph. He gave orders to wake everyone else.

"The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could.

"We were walking on the walls [of the boat]. We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother.”

The little girl in question were the surviving passengers, Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter.

LADbible reached out to the Palermo Coast Guard and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office for comment.

Water rescue boat sinks in Lake Michigan during search efforts, cause under investigation

yacht 007 sinks

KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. — First responders faced a dangerously close call while trying to locate a missing scuba diver near a shipwreck.

The Kenosha County Fire and Rescue Association’s boat sank to the bottom of Lake Michigan Tuesday during the search efforts.

Eight people from multiple communities were on board.

"To see all your friends out there, it was surreal. Very scary," Town of Paris Fire Chief Colin Hennessey said.

"Shocking to hear the radio transmission," Somers Fire Chief Ben Andersen recalled.

The boat, a Bayliner Rendezvous 2659 measuring 26.5 feet long and 8.5 feet wide, went out on Lake Michigan just before noon Tuesday to search for missing shipwreck diver Patrick Kelly, who was later found dead. Hennessey, also vice president of the association, said the boat was part of a grid search and was on the water for about two hours.

After returning to the marina for equipment, the boat went back on the water. Around 2:30 p.m., trouble hit about four miles from the shoreline and two miles from the search area.

"They said they were taking on water and rapidly losing power," Andersen said.

Thankfully, the eight people on board were able to get onto two other boats safely.

City of Kenosha Alderman Rocco LaMacchia said he was grateful no one was killed.

"I know accidents do happen, but this is a very expensive accident," LaMacchia said.

Leaders with the association wanted to be clear that the boat is not owned by any municipality.

What caused it to sink is still unknown. Hennessey told TMJ4 News that the boat is "constantly maintained." Crews perform a 360-degree check of the vessel before launching it into the water.

"That boat was floating for a very long time, so the idea of it being a plug we truly don't believe it is, but what actually caused it is under investigation," Hennessey said.

The association says partner agencies will help cover water rescues while their boat remains at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

Their goal is to retrieve the boat as soon as possible.

Russia’s Disaster-Plagued Aircraft Carrier Finally Left Its Drydock

By Emma Helfrich

Posted on Feb 21, 2023 10:32 PM EST

Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov leaves drydock

The Russian military’s only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov , has left its drydock at the Sevmorput Naval Shipyard in the country’s northwestern Murmansk region.

Admiral Kuznetsov was moved to its specially built drydock in Sevmorput , also known as Shipyard Number 35 or the 35th Shipyard, in May 2022. For over three years before that, the carrier was undergoing work in port at the shipyard after having to relocate from Russia’s largest floating drydock PD-50 following its unexpected sinking right from underneath the flattop in October 2018. This was just one in a string of unfortunate events that have plagued an overhaul effort Admiral Kuznetsov has been undergoing since 2017.

Footage of Admiral Kuznetsov leaving the 35th Shipyard’s drydock emerged on Telegram after being shared by Zvezda , the official media outlet of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The clips show Admiral Kuznetsov being pulled into Kola Bay just outside the shipyard by at least one tugboat, with other vessels seen nearby supporting the operation.

A corresponding machine-translated article published by Zvezda said that Admiral Kuznetsov left the drydock to the song “Farewell of Slavianka,” a Russian patriotic march. The story also quotes Alexei Rakhmanov, the head of United Shipbuilding Corporation, which is a Russian government-owned company dedicated to administering military construction and maintenance contracts, in saying that the aircraft carrier has left its drydock because “all work on the underwater part of the ship had already been completed.” Exactly what that work entailed wasn’t specified.

The Russian military first began removing Admiral Kuznetsov from drydock in December of last year . At the time, the Russian TASS News Agency reported that the operation would take a month to complete. With the ship only now having officially left drydock in late February of 2023, the overall process ultimately lasted nearly two months.

Russia’s efforts to find a drydock solution big enough for Admiral Kuznetsov after the sinking of the country’s massive floating drydock PD-50, the country’s largest, in October 2018, highlight shortcomings in Russia’s naval support infrastructure. Readers of The War Zone can learn more about these implications in this past article .

The sudden loss of PD-50 prompted a long scramble to build a new drainable basin at the 35th Shipyard that could adequately fit the aircraft carrier. The drydock Admiral Kuznetsov has now left was made by combining two existing drydocks together, extending them, and then pulling the aircraft carrier inside, before damning the area up and draining it.

In an apparent decision to expedite the construction process, a purpose-built gate for the drydock wasn’t built, so the ship was physically walled in and the water was then pumped out in a process that can take two to three months. The reverse of which was required to pull out Admiral Kuznetsov , and the frigid weather of Russia’s winter months could have very well contributed to the timeframe of the operation.

A year after PD-50 sank and while construction of the ship’s new drydock at the 35th Shipyard was underway, Admiral Kuznetsov caught fire , only adding to the aircraft carrier’s ill-fated saga. At the time, TASS explained that the blaze occurred because safety rules were violated during repairs of one of the ship’s power units.

This wasn’t the first or last time the ship had become engulfed in flames either. A separate incident occurred in 2009, which can be seen in the video below, that led to the loss of a sailor’s life from smoke inhalation. Another fire broke out aboard the ship just last December but was quickly extinguished. Admiral Kuznetsov was prone to accidents of various kinds while in service, including some rather embarrassing fighter operations on its last cruise that featured the then-new MiG-29KR as well as aging Su-33s.

Needless to say, Admiral Kuznetsov has been beset by issues for its entire career. The aircraft carrier is even shadowed by an ocean-going tug in case of emergencies. Regardless, work on the ship is said to have persisted in some capacity throughout these misfortunes.

The overhaul of Admiral Kuznetsov began in 2017 after it returned from its first and only combat deployment to Syria. The overarching effort, the scope of which was scaled back significantly the same year it kicked off, looks to extend the service life of the ship. It also aims to make it more reliable to operate, as well as provide enhancements to its dated combat systems.

Russia is aiming to complete this overhaul by 2024 with the goal of keeping Admiral Kuznetsov in service for another decade or more, but this timeline is not guaranteed. Even still, being its only aircraft carrier, a working and operational Admiral Kuznetsov is clearly seen as a worthwhile asset for the Russian Navy, although that is a very debatable position in naval warfare circles. Still, the service doesn’t want to give up on it.

Continuing to funnel money into Admiral Kuznetsov has been seen by some as a questionable investment for Russia when it could instead be used to realize other potentially more sustainable and usable efforts . Having to expand the drydock at the 35th Shipyard alone ate up its own fair share of resources, and getting Admiral Kuznetsov to working order would just mean that additional operation and maintenance costs will continue in the years to come. This would of course be on top of the needs of its carrier wing which has spent most of its life without a ship to operate from.

These issues have been greatly magnified by Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine, which is now about to enter its second year. With mountains of resources being shoveled into the war effort, spending large sums of money fixing and operating an already questionably relevant carrier that will have no role in the war is a somewhat remarkable decision.
