The Watch Of The Open Seas: History Of The Rolex Yacht-Master

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 White Gold 226629

Instagram: @rolex

In the year 1992, Swiss watchmaker Rolex would debut a new model line at the Baselworld show that was strikingly similar to the already-popular Submariner. It featured the same 40mm Oyster case with a rotating bezel, the same chronometer-certified caliber, and the same Oyster bracelet.

Seemingly the only difference between the two was the white dial of that first Yacht-Master, a style which has never been an option on a Sub, and the inferior depth rating of 100m when compared to the Sub’s 300m.

Yet, the Yacht-Master was well-received upon launch, and with the passing of time, the yachting-inspired model has evolved and pioneered its own path within Rolex’s catalog.

Read on with us as we go back to the beginning and track the catalysts that paved the way for the most recent Yacht-Master release, the Yacht-Master 42 (226659), to become one of the hottest sports timepieces of the year.

The Release Of The Yacht-Master

The first Yacht-Master watch was launched in 1992 under reference number 16628. It featured a yellow gold case, a bidirectional graduated bezel, and a matching full-gold Oyster bracelet. Its dial was white with black hour indices, while at center were gold Mercedes hands, and beating inside was the 3135 movement.

Previous to the Yacht-Master’s introduction, Rolex had not released a new model line in a quarter century. So, why did they go with the Yacht-Master, a design that risked being a detractor from their existing Submariner? Let’s take a look at the inspiration.

The sport of yachting is one which demands precise timing and extreme coordination of the entire crew for optimal performance, particularly in offshore competitions.

Vintage Rolex Daytona Yacht-Master Prototype

Rolex believed their waterproof and chronometer-grade timepieces to be more than qualified to handle the knocks of a regatta and keep ticking accurately. The brand is also notorious for their marketing prowess, which led them to act quickly in establishing an association with the sport.

Beginning in 1958 with their first sponsorship of a race, the relationship has endured until today, when the brand sponsors over a dozen international yachting events.

Nevertheless, it’s hard to deny that there exists a large gap between first contact in 1958 and the release of the yacht-inspired timepiece in the early ’90s. Why wasn’t the Yacht-Master released earlier on?

Well, Rolex played around with the idea of yachting chronograph early on, though it never materialized. All that’s left of these trials are an extremely limited number of Daytona ref. 6239 chronograph prototypes with a 39mm case (vs standard 36mm) and modified regatta dials.

Unfortunately, the Yacht-Master concept was scrapped and would not reappear until decades later.

Rolex Submariner With Date Window

When it did return, none of the previous Yacht-Master’s DNA was there. Furthermore, the 1992 Yacht-Master was bizarrely similar to the 16610 Sub of the time.

Interestingly enough, Rolex folklore tells of a time in the ’80s when the brand sought to update their Submariner . What resulted was less of an update and more of an overhaul, manifested as what we know now as the first Yacht-Master.

Apprehensive of the repercussions that making such aggressive design changes to their staple offering could bring, the brand chose instead to release the watch intended to be a new Submariner as the reborn Yacht-Master instead.

The move worked, and the new Yacht-Masters started flying off the shelves. The Yacht-Master was perceived as a more luxurious Sub, though its bidirectional bezel proved useful for on-the-fly countdowns which are critical in sailing competitions. The waterproof nature of the Oyster case further cemented the Yacht-Master as the ideal first mate.

Mid-Size & Ladies’ Yacht-Master

In 1994, just two years after the debut of the 16628, Rolex would introduce the same design but in smaller case sizes. These were:

  • Ref. 68628: Yacht-Master “Mid-Size” in 35mm
  • Ref. 69628: Yacht-Master Ladies’ in 29mm

This marked the first time that Rolex ever offered one of their sports models in a smaller case size; all previous instances of case size changes were increases as opposed to reductions. It has been speculated that the smaller cases were intended for the Asian market.

In the same year, Rolex also offered the same 16628 but this time with a deep blue dial. Blue dials tend to make for broadly-liked watches, and coupled with the gold case and bracelet, the new version was once again a hit.

The Platinum (Rolesium) Yacht-Master

The next update to the model line would come in 1999 with yet another home-run: the Rolesium Yacht-Master. The new watch featured a stainless steel case and bracelet with a platinum dial and platinum-insert bezel. Rolesium, a term registered by Rolex back in the ’30s for a combination of steel and platinum in a watch, was finally put to use.

The new platinum Yacht-Master ref. 16622 was not only more accessible than the previous all-gold varieties, it was also more versatile. This would lead the 16622 variety to become the face of the Yacht-Master line.

In fact, many online resources erroneously label it the first Yacht-Master ever; this should offer an idea of how emblematic it is in the watch industry.

The 16622 also presented a new dial and hand style that would mark Rolex as a whole through to the modern day. The new Yacht-Master boasted what is now recognized as the “maxi dial”.

Yellow Gold Rolex Yacht-Master Blue Dial 16628

Rolex Yacht-Master 16628 w/ maxi dial. Instagram: @kellokonttori

The maxi dial is characterized by oversized hour indices as well as larger hands at center. To the untrained eye, the difference may be difficult to spot, though experienced collectors will note the change instantly.

The maxi dial became the style of choice for all modern Rolex sports watches, though it got its start in the 1999 platinum Yacht-Master. A Submariner would first feature a maxi dial in 2003, with the release of the 50th anniversary Rolex Submariner “Kermit” (16610LV).

All versions of the Yacht-Master produced after the introduction of the maxi dial would also feature the new dial design. This included the blue, gold, and white dial versions from years past.

The Two-Tone (Rolesor) Yacht-Master

Six years after the Rolesium Yacht-Master came to be, Rolex would once more put on display their mixed-metal Rolesor style in the two-tone Yacht-Master 16623.

Two-Tone Rolex Yacht-Master Blue Dial 16823

Yacht-Master ref. 16623. Instagram: @v.davidofftimepieces

The 2005 debuts possessed a 40mm steel case, a yellow gold bidirectional bezel, and a two-tone Oyster bracelet. As far as dials, many of the previous styles were also available like the black-on-white, though mother of pearl version were also introduced.

It was during Baselworld 2007 when Rolex would introduce the Yacht-Master’s younger and much larger sibling, the Yacht-Master II. Whereas the original Yacht-Master was very close functionally to the Sub, the Yacht-Master II was completely the opposite.

It can be said that the only overlap between the YM and the YMII is be the name, as the second iteration looks like a whole new watch. This time, though, it’s clear that the watch has been designed with the needs of yachting professionals in mind.

Rolex Yacht-Master II In Yellow Gold

The first Yacht-Master II were marked by a 44mm Oyster case, an Oyster bracelet, a white dial,  and a blue Cerachrom (ceramic) Ring Command bezel. The first two references, 116688 and 116689, were made of yellow gold and white gold, respectively.

Powering the YMII was another innovation – Rolex’s in-house calibre 4161. It features the COSC-chronometer certification and 72-hour power reserve that are today’s standard, though they were industry-leading at the time. Most notable, though, was the 4161 movement’s functions.

The new caliber boasted a “ programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization. ” Naturally, the programming of the movement required the use of the Ring Command bezel, a feature which had also never been encountered on a Rolex watch before.

In later years, Rolex would go on to release Rolesor and full-steel versions of the Yacht-Master II, both of which have been relatively successful. The Yacht-Master II has certainly earned a spot in the brand’s catalog, and is sure to stick around for next couple of decades.

The Six-Digit Yacht-Master

Rolex Yacht-Master 116622 Cobalt Blue Dial j

Yacht-Master 116622

Twenty years after it debuted as the 16628, the Yacht-Master would see in 2012 the modernization that had been sweeping Rolex’s other model families.

Aside from receiving a new six-digit reference number (116622), subtle aesthetic changes were also present, as was an outstanding new dial option – the Cobalt Blue dial.

The case was now a “super case”, which retained the 40mm diameter but was styled differently. The bezel was now completely platinum, where previous versions were made of steel with a platinum insert. The Oyster bracelet had likewise been upgraded.

A platinum bezel / platinum dial option was still part of the collection and therefore received the same upgrades. Unfortunately, this iconic “albino” look would be completely discontinued in 2017.

The subsequent and most recent significant change to the Yacht-Master family took place in 2015, when Rolex first introduced the Everose Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116655.

Rolex Everose Yacht-Master On Oysterflex Bracelet

Rolex Everose Yacht-Master on Oysterflex bracelet

The newest iteration of the YM possessed some new features. The case was made of Everose, and the bezel now boasted a black Cerachrom insert. Securing the watch to the wrist was another Rolex first – the Oysterflex rubber ‘bracelet’.

Before the 116655, no Rolex watch had ever sported a rubber band. The brand still refers to it as a bracelet given the metal elements within the band, but these are not obvious even with the watch in the hand.

This same style of Yacht-Master would receive the next update in 2019, when Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master 42 in white gold.

What’s Next?

With the recent changes that the Yacht-Master line has had, it is clear that Rolex intends to keep this model family alive and well for years to come. Consumers are likewise responding to each new release, offering plenty of feedback with their pocketbooks.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

At 8:30 AM last Wednesday (Geneva time), when everyone stateside was tucked into their beds, the entire set of new Rolex novelties hit the internet. We immediately turned our focus to a certain left-sided crown GMT-Master II with a green and black bezel, and the new Air-King with crown guards and professional case. But those weren't the only releases from The Crown this year. In fact, when the HODINKEE team visited the Rolex booth (I really need to stop calling these things booths) at Watches & Wonders, one collection took us all by surprise: The Yacht-Master.

Now, I don't have a complete understanding of the personal lives of my colleagues, but I think it's fair for me to say that not one of us is a competitive yachts-person and yet nearly every one of us was jazzed to handle the new 42mm Yacht-Master in yellow gold on the Oysterflex bracelet. Yellow gold has a tendency to do that.

YG Yacht-Master

In fact, this is one of the reasons I am so happy that trade shows are back and we're able to handle watches in person and report back to you, the readers, on our observations. I think it's likely that we would have overlooked this release as nothing more than a change in metal. But to my mind, this new case material results in a Yacht-Master the way it always should have been: Flashy, but no less sporty. The yellow gold execution just feels right.

Of course, that wasn't the only news to come off the yacht. We weren't able to see it, but Rolex unveiled a new white gold variant with something called a Falcon's Eye dial which looks about as cool as anything I've seen out of the "house that Wilsdorf built" in years. I'll reserve full judgment until I see it in person, though.

Falcon's Eye Yacht-Master

Yacht-Master with Falcon's Eye dial

But there was even more yacht-watch action that had the room waiting to touch and feel (I'll never stop saying that). I'm talking about the 40mm white gold Yacht-Master with diamond-set lugs, and a rotating bezel fully set with an array of colorful sapphires.

I don't want this point to be lost on anyone. The bezel has no text, numerals, or any useful markings. It's just adorned with sapphires and yet – Rolex still made it rotate. You just have to love that. It almost bears repeating the "no sapphire left unturned" joke I made in the introductory article. Well, I guess I just repeated it anyway.

Sapphire Yacht-Master on wrist

It really is interesting that the watches you think we'd scoff at in press photos are the ones we were most excited to try on in person. The sapphire YM made its way around the table multiple times, as each of us wanted a second and third time with it on the wrist. From a size perspective, I have always loved the 40mm YM , and the colorful blingy-ness of this one really makes it a larger-than-life timepiece.

But it was the YG YM that really caught my eye. Prior to W&W, we wrote an article about Rolex watches we hoped to see this year. I chose one I knew we would never see, which was a Submariner with a Yacht-Master bezel. I just love the matte-ceramic look and feel of this bezel with the tone-on-tone raised numerals. For a model range that comes predominantly in precious metals, it is interesting to see such a utilitarian, toolish look paired with gold. This is in contrast to the steel Submariner, which utilizes a shiny Cerachrom bezel.

Yellow Gold YM on wrist

On the wrist, the 42mm version wears exactly like you would expect a 42mm watch to wear. It isn't deceptively small, or overly large – but it is big. I have a six-and-a-third-inch wrist and I am not sure I could wear this one daily. Much of that has to do with the Oysterflex bracelet – and yes it is technically a bracelet and not a strap. You see, as comfortable as it is (and it's mighty comfortable), it bows out slightly and doesn't hug the wrist as tightly as a traditional bracelet does. Unfortunately, this makes a 42mm watch wear exactly as advertised, which in my case makes the watch a tad too big (though fingers crossed for a future 37mm version).

This was a bit of a bummer for me to experience in the room because as a design object, the yellow gold Yacht-Master is a total stunner. The black dial, maxi lume plots, and the date window all work to form a well-proportioned timepiece. Of course, this is a purely aesthetic update and the watch continues to feature the Superlative Chronometer-rated 3235 caliber.

Yellow Gold Yacht-Master

I really think the entire YM collection is criminally underrated by the general watch-loving public, but I also understand that price is a factor in these things, and at $28,300 the yellow gold model isn't necessarily a bargain. Of course you can always spring for the steel model with platinum bezel in 40mm sizing, but that really feels like a different watch entirely.

Yellow Gold Yacht-Master

My high-level observations of this watch are that it's a logical addition to the Yacht-Master fray. I suspect we'll see more of these in the wild than we did the white gold model because WG is a metal that flies under the radar. If you're buying gold, you want someone to know. It has the heft you want from a solid gold watch, but it's balanced by the cushioned comfort of the Oysterflex. In a world where steel Rolex sport watches are trending around the price of this model on the secondary market, is it so crazy to spring for YG and get your name on the warranty card?

Mike Lynch's estate sued for £3 billion as tech giant seeks 'conclusion' after yacht tragedy

Hewlett Packard has confirmed that it will continue to pursue Mike Lynch's estate for around £3 billion in damages, following the Bayesian yacht tragedy that claimed seven lives

Mike Lynch in 2014

  • 02:54, 3 Sep 2024

Just over a fortnight after billionaire Mike Lynch was found dead in the Bayesian superyacht tragedy, US technology giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has confirmed that it will continue its £3 billion legal claim against the tycoon. The body of the billionaire British tech mogul was recovered just over a fortnight ago, following the disaster which claimed the lives of seven people.

59-year-old Lynch was celebrating his victory against the tech giant in the US criminal courts aboard his £30 million superyacht 'Bayesian', when tragedy struck off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of August 19. The exact cause of the 184ft yacht's capsizing remains a matter of investigation, but freak weather conditions are thought to have played a role.

But despite the celebration, the embattled mogul still faced a civil case in the UK High Court over fraud allegations relating to the £8.3 billion sale of his company, Autonomy, in 2011. The US tech firm HPE has said it intends to continue its civil claim against the deceased tycoon's estate and "follow the proceedings through to their conclusion."

This could mean the company holding Lynch's widow Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht tragedy, liable for the £3 billion in damages. However, the Independent reports that judges have already ruled any damages will be "substantially less" than this eye-watering sum.

The legal battle between Mike Lynch and Hewlett Packard has been ongoing for much of the past decade, with the tech giant claiming to have been oversold on the value of Autonomy when they purchased it for over £8 billion. This escalated in 2021, when Lynch lost a fight against extradition to the United States for criminal fraud charges.

And yet, in a surprising victory in June this year, Lynch beat the potential 20-year prison sentence and was found not guilty on all charges by a California jury. But despite beating decades in a US prison, an expensive civil trial in the UK High Court still hung over him.

HPE said in a statement: “In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain.

“A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge’s decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course. It is HPE’s intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion.”

The Bayesian yacht tragedy also claimed the lives of Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and wife Judy, Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo and wife Neda, and the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas. The first post-mortems on Chris and Neda Morvillo found the cause of death to be drowning, AP reports.

15 of those aboard managed to escape the rapidly sinking yacht, including crewmate Matthew Griffiths, who recounted this week: "I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots (23 mph). He gave orders to wake everyone else. The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water.

"Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could."

3 Platinum Yacht-Masters to Fit Any Wrist

3 master yacht

In 1999, Rolex unveiled a trio of  new Yacht-Masters in a variety of sizes. Although these Yacht-Masters are stainless steel Rolex sports watches, they’re ultra-luxurious thanks to their platinum dials and bezels. Named Rolesium, the mix of steel and platinum is, in fact, exclusive to the Yacht-Master collection. It’s worth noting that aesthetically and functionally, these three Rolex Yacht-Master models are essentially the same except for size and calibers. These particular Rolesium Yacht-Masters enjoyed great success, however, they are no longer available in Rolex’s current catalog having been replaced with newer models. Thus, the pre-owned market is the only place to find these specific stainless steel and platinum Yacht-Masters. With that, let’s delve into the three different versions of the platinum Yacht-Master.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 16622

Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 16622

The largest among the steel and platinum Yacht-Masters, the ref. 16622 sports a 40mm case. Because of its size, the Maxi Dial with the larger lume plots and fatter hands looks especially good on the machined platinum dial. The predominately monochromatic Rolesium Yacht-Master ref. 16622 shows off a flash of color with the red seconds hand and “YACHT-MASTER” label.

Driving the Yacht-Master ref. 16622 is the famed Rolex caliber 3135 that powers the center hands and Quickset date features.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 168622

Rolex Yacht-Master

Ideal for both men with smaller wrists and ladies, the Oyster case of the Yacht-Master ref. 168622 measures 35mm. Naturally, due to the smaller dimension of the midsize Yacht-Master, the rotatable platinum bezel is also smaller yet, offers the same high-impact aesthetic. For instance, the sandblasted bezel is a beautiful contrast against the glossy raised numerals and markings. Furthermore, aside from the attractiveness of the platinum bezel, the rotatability of it provides practicality as wearers can use it to time specific events – such as the time it takes sailors to guide their boats between two markers.

The midsize Yacht-Master ref. 169622 houses the smaller Rolex Caliber 2235 automatic mechanical movement.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 169622

Yacht-Master 169622

The daintiest and most feminine option among the three Yacht-Masters. the ref. 169622 dons a case size of 29mm. Though significantly smaller than the other two models, the ladies’ platinum and steel Yacht-Master is still as sporty thanks to its identical design. Just made proportionally smaller, the ref. 169622 still features the same Oyster case, platinum bezel with raised graduations, platinum dial with bold luminescent markers and hands, and robust Oyster bracelet. Plus, as is the case with the first two aforementioned references, the smallest version is also outfitted with the Triplock winding crown, therefore the watch is water resistant to 330 feet (100 meters).

The ref 169622 also runs on the Rolex Caliber 2235 self-winding mechanical movement just like the larger midsized Yacht-Master.

The Rolesium Yacht-Master, regardless of the size, is the perfect casual chic watch. Sporty, yet super luxe, robust and resilient, yet refined and elegant, it really is a Rolex that can be worn almost anytime and anywhere. Whether sailing the high seas or on terra firma, the stainless steel and platinum Rolex Yacht-Master is a solid companion.

Two stranded sailors rescued from damaged yacht after frightening night at sea

Two people have been safely rescued in a major sea operation on the NSW South Coast.

On Monday, about 1pm, emergency services including the ADF and Marine Area Command responded to the yacht, which had been affected by mechanical issues and was taking on water.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Stranded sailors rescued in dramatic operation.

The rescue operation was co-ordinated after a distress beacon was activated on board the vessel, approximately 150km offshore from Nowra.

The rescue operation was suspended overnight due to extreme weather conditions and resumed this morning.

Police have released a statement saying two people, a man aged in his 60s and a woman in her 40s, were safely aboard the police vessel Nemesis and travelling back to Sydney.

Liam Tapper appeared on Sunrise on Tuesday, breaking news the stranded sailors had been rescued.

HMAS Canberra Captain Brendan O’Hara said the duo’s near 24-hour ordeal would have been torturous, given his far-more-sizeable ship had also battled the powerful swells.

Winds of between 50 and 70km/h along with seas of up to 6m had made executing the rescue effort challenging for crews, conditions O’Hara labelled “quite extreme”.

“(The pair) were just holding on as best they could ? I hate to think what it was like for them, because even on board Canberra, which is quite a large ship, we were rocking and rolling a fair bit,” he told Sunrise.

“Not much of the crew here have had much sleep, so the two personnel in Spirit of Mateship definitely had no sleep at all, I dread to think about the conditions in there.”

The two people were unhurt, according to police, when they were rescued at 7.25am.

They will be taken back to Sydney for medical assessment.

The choppy conditions initially prevented authorities from winching the duo out of their boat and airlifting them to medical facilities.

Earlier on Tuesday, Australian Maritime and Safety Authority officials said the matter had become “time-sensitive” with the boat taking on water.

Two Royal Australian Navy ships and an RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft were initially involved in the rescue operation.

The Spirit of Mateship has entered a number of Sydney to Hobart races, crewed by wounded and injured former defence force personnel to raise money for charity Mates4Mates.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott launched the boat in 2013 before the vessel’s first Sydney to Hobart effort.

Tech giant to pursue £3bn claim against Mike Lynch’s family after yacht death

An American technology company says it will continue to pursue £3bn worth of damages against Mike Lynch’s estate, despite his recent death in a superyacht disaster.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) won the multi-billion-pound High Court claim against the British tech tycoon in 2022, over fraud claims involving the sale of Dr Lynch’s firm Autonomy in 2011.

However, his death aboard the Bayesian yacht , which sank during a freak storm on 19 August off the coast of Sicily, means that his family could be liable for the payout.

In a statement, HPE said: “In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain.

“A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge’s decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course. It is HPE’s intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion.”

Dr Lynch was cleared in a separate criminal trial involving the sale of Autonomy in June, with his boat trip said to be a gathering among friends, close colleagues and his legal team to celebrate his acquittal.

HPE won its civil case in the UK over claims that Dr Lynch and his company’s former finance chief, Sushovan Hussain, had inflated the revenus of the firm before the takeover.

In a hearing earlier this year, HPE said it was seeking £3bn in damages, with a judge expected to rule on it later this year.

Dr Lynch died alongside his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and five others after his superyacht sank during the early hours of the morning in a suspected tornado.

After becoming trapped in the ship’s hull, he was killed along with Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and the yacht’s cheft Recaldo Thomas.

Rescuers saved 15 passengers from the water, with three of the crew members now under investigation. This includes the ship’s captain James Cutfield, who is being probed for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

The former owner of Tottenham Hotspur FC has moored his £250 million superyacht in the middle of a town in Devon , leaving locals baffled.

Billionaire Joe Lewis, who was recently sentenced for insider trading charges in the US, has moored his giant blue superyacht in Dartmouth for weeks after arriving in the UK tourist destination at the beginning of August.

The 322-foot (98m) luxury vessel Aviva, which the 87-year-old uses partly as a residence and partly as an office, arrived from Troon, Scotland, to the Devonshire coast around 5 August.

The yacht has been pictured dominating the entire landscape of Dartmouth, overshadowing smaller yachts that are docked in the harbour next to the small seaside that lines the shore.

The scenic coastal town of Dartmouth, situated on the banks of the River Dart, has a rich maritime heritage and boasts independent locally-owned boutiques as well as beaches such as Castle Cove and Sugary Cove that attract hundreds of visitors to the small town.

The town holds an annual regatta, one of the oldest events of its kind in the country, that invites yachts, keelboats, sports boats and dinghies to the sporting event held in its port. This year’s event took place on 29 to 31 August while Lewis’ yacht was also moored in the area.

The luxury yacht Aviva , belonging to billionaire Joe Lewis, pictured here by Butler's Wharf in London

The giant yacht is hard to miss, leaving some residents perplexed as to why such a huge boat would want to be moored in a small English town that does not offer the same tropical weather that most superyachts are spotted in .

“I love this town and I wouldn’t want to do it down but why does a billionaire want to stay here for the whole of August instead of the Caribbean or the Med?” one lifelong resident told The Sun .

"It’s just a huge floating gin palace, miles bigger than anything else in the harbour. We’ve seen his crew come and go in a tender but I don’t know if he’s even onboard – nobody’s heard anything,” they added.

It is unclear if Lewis is present on the superyacht while it is being anchored in Devon .

Aviva was built in 2017, can host 16 guests, 25 crew members, and also features an indoor padel tennis court, according to SuperYachtFan .

The superyacht had not been spotted around British waters until recently, as Aviva, along with the owner’s private jet, was put up as collateral for bail after the British billionaire’s arrest in July 2023 for insider trading charges in the US.

Dartmouth, a popular tourist destination in the UK, usually only hosts smaller yachts in its harbour

Lewis was not allowed to set foot on the vessel until he paid a $5m fine after his sentencing in April for sharing business secrets with friends, which also includes three years of prison.

After leaving its base in Malta following the sentencing, Aviva set sail to cities along Albania’s coast as well as the Greek island Zakynthos and Kalamata in southern Greece, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Along with the padel tennis court, the yacht also includes a helipad, spa and a cinema, and was ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable superyachts shortly after its launch, the outlet added.

Aviva is also home to one of the most expensive art collections in the world, with original works by Picasso and Matisse aboard the yacht.

Lewis made his fortune primarily in foreign exchange and investment before buying Tottenham Hotspur in 1991. He is ranked 38th among the UK’s wealthiest people, according to the Sunday Times Rich List , with a net worth of £5.3bn.

HOW SCOTTIE GOT SO GOOD

Golf Digest Logo Course Management

It's time to master the dogleg. Use these tips and you’ll stay ahead of the curve

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/1/GD0924_HOW_DOGLEG_01.jpg

DRAW IT? The 10th at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Mo.

Big Cedar Lodge

Most amateurs struggle with dogleg holes because they try to do something they’re not capable of doing. If the hole bends to the left, they think, I need to hook or draw it around the corner, even if their natural ball flight is a fade. That strategy has double bogey written all over it. Remember, the second half of every dogleg is the shortest part of the hole, so if you can reach the corner and keep the ball in play, you’ve got a chance to score. Here are some other things to consider when you step on the tee of a hole that bends left or right.

1. Pinpoint the zone

Before you choose a club, take the usual steps: Consider the shape of the hole, the wind and the trouble surrounding the dogleg. But the important step is to get out a yardage book or a range finder and calculate two things: 1) ) the distance to the inside corner of the dogleg. 2) how far it is before you run out of fairway. Obviously, getting your tee shot past the corner is the goal, but you also have to keep from hitting it into trouble on the far side of the hole. Go with a club that is going to fit the ball nicely in that zone.

MORE: Want to be a good golfer? Advanced stats reveal the 10 shots you need

2. Play it straight-ish

Under calm conditions, choose a start line in the fairway even if your typical ball curves. The mistake is to aim too far left or right and then hit a shot that doesn’t curve at all and you end up in jail. The exception is when the wind is blowing hard in the direction of the dogleg or you tend to hit a big hook or slice. In those cases, it’s OK to aim at the rough line because you’re likely to curve the ball back into play.

3. Don’t get cute

To play good golf, you don’t have to know how to shape shots left and right, but you do have to know how to make the ball go in one direction. If you’re most comfortable hitting a fade, play from the far right-hand side of the tee box, aim toward the left-hand side of the fairway and then make an aggressive, confident swing. If you can hit a draw, play from the left side of the tee. Don’t try to produce a shot you’re not comfortable hitting. —With Dave Allen

Two sailors rescued from yacht in distress off NSW coast

""

On Monday 2 September 2024 at 12:40pm AEST, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) detected an emergency distress signal from an EPIRB onboard a 20-metre yacht The Spirit of Mateship with two people on board, located approximately 185km east of Nowra, New South Wales.

The two crew have now been rescued by NSW Police launch Nemesis.

Last night AMSA's Response Centre tasked the Nowra-based RAAF rescue helicopter Choppa 26 – CHC and NSW Ambulance Wollongong-based Rescue 204 , and Sydney-based Rescue 208 helicopters. The NSW Ambulance Sydney-based rescue helicopter arrived on scene at about 3pm AEST and was able make contact. However, were not able to retrieve them due to severe weather on scene and fuel considerations.

A RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft was on scene to support after last light, and departed at 9pm AEST.

HMAS Arunta arrived on scene at 6pm AEST, with HMAS Canberra arriving at 1am AEST this morning. Arunta departed this morning at 12:30am AEST.

NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis arrived on scene at 3am this morning, and remained overnight to maintain contact. Nemesis successfully transferred the two crew members on board at 7:25am AEST, and is now making its way back to Sydney.

Both crew members are reported to be uninjured.

AMSA would like to thank the crew of NSW Police launch Nemesis , HMAS Arunta , HMAS Canberra , Helicopter crews from Rescue 204, Rescue 208 NSW Ambulance helicopters, and Choppa 26 – CHC , along with the crew of the ship C SAV Rio Nevado for their invaluable assistance with this rescue.

This successful outcome again highlights the importance of carrying an emergency beacon at all times, as this led to a prompt response to this emergency.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Exceptional legibility

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 37 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

A legendary combination

Many Rolex watches are available with the now-legendary combination of yellow, white or Everose gold and steel known as Rolesor, but Rolesium is a creation specific to the Yacht-Master.

While the case and bracelet are in rugged Oystersteel, the bezel of the Rolesium versions is made of platinum, imparting a silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity for an unmistakable sense of luxury.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
