KNOT TYING FOR BOATING - LEARN POPULAR BOATING KNOTS

KNOT TYING FOR BOATING   LEARN POPULAR BOATING KNOTS - STEP BY STEP   Knowing how to confidently and successfully operate a boat requires extensive knowledge of boating techniques on and offshore. One of the most important skills a boater should learn is how to tie knots for boating. Not only are boat knots important to know but it’s always fun to learn new ones. Have a look at this site Animated Knots to learn how to tie lots of fun and important boating knots.   The first thing you should know about boating knots is that not all knots are referred to as knots. The term “knot” refers to knots tied on the end of a single rope line. Bends are knots used to join two lines together. Hitches are knots used to secure rope lines to another object that’s not another line, such as a cleat or stanchion.   Types of Knots, Their Purposes and How to Tie Them There are many types of nautical knots, but which are considered important boating knots boat owners should know? Here is a quick guide discussing a few essential knots for boaters to use, why they are used for boating and how to tie them correctly.

BOWLINE BOATING KNOT The bowline knot is one of the basic knots we believe all boaters should master. Of the many important boating knots you should know, the bowline knot is relied on for its versatility due to the fact that its fixed noose won’t allow the rope to run or slip. Although it’s secure, it can be easily untied manually no matter how tight the knot is. Practice these steps to tie a boeline knot:  1. First, lay the rope across your non-dominant hand and make a small loop in the rope. 2. Run the working end through the loop from the underside. 3. Next, wrap it around the standing line and down through the loop’s topside. 4. Pull the working end to tighten.   For more robust tightness, use a double bowline knot. This involves the same steps as a traditional bowline knot except you’ll wrap the rope around your hand twice.   STOPPER KNOT Any time you tie a knot in a line, you hope you’ve used the correct knot, bend or hitch properly and it won’t come loose. Unfortunately, a great knot might not stop a line from pulling through a rope clutch. Thankfully, you can tie a stopper knot to the end of any rope to prevent this from happening. Stopper knots do not come untied easily like other knots, making them ideal for heavy-duty applications. To tie a stopper knot: 1. Wrap the working end of the line around your palm twice. 2. Slide the working end beneath the two loops created. 3. Remove the rope from your hand and use the working end to pull it tight.   CLEAT HITCH When securing a line to a cleat — fittings which temporarily or permanently secure a line from a boat to a dock — you need to use a proper cleat hitch. Using another knot, bend or hitch is not recommended, making the cleat hitch knot one of the essential knots for boaters to know. If you have any spare time on a dock, deck or boat, practice tying a cleat hitch knot by performing these steps: 1. Wrap the line one full time around the cleat. 2. Make a figure-eight around one horn of the cleat. 3. Make another figure-eight around the other horn of the cleat. 4. Pass the working end under the line and pull to tighten.   CLOVE HITCH The rolling hitch is more secure, but if you need an effective hitch to secure your vessel to a pole temporarily, you can also use a clove hitch. Clove hitches are used for different applications, particularly those which aren’t heavy-duty, like securing fender whips. The lines of these hitches require constant pressure and can come loose through significant movement. To tie a clove hitch to a pole: 1. Wrap the rope around the pole once. 2. Pass the rope over the top of itself as you wrap it a second time. 3. Slide the working end under the second wrap and pull to tighten.   ANCHOR HITCH The anchor hitch is unsurprisingly used regularly to tie a rope to an anchor then secure the anchor to the ship. Other uses include securing the rope to a ring or another point of termination. 1. Run the working end of the rope through the anchor’s shackle twice, leaving both turns open. 2. Take the working end behind the standing line of the rope then feed it through the first turn and tighten. 3. Tie the working end of the rope to the standing line with a backup knot to ensure that it doesn’t come undone and lose your anchor.   FIGURE-EIGHT KNOT If you’re new to boating but have a little knowledge about ropes, you may have heard of the figure-eight knot in another context. The figure-eight knot is also used in rock climbing. Boaters prefer this popular easy to undo knot because it provides a safe, simple and secure way to keep two ropes together. To tie a simple figure-eight knot in a single rope, follow these steps: 1. Make a single loop on one end of the rope. 2. Pass the working end of the rope through the loop. 3. Pull both sides of the rope to tighten the knot.   Practice these steps to learn how to tie a figure-eight bend with two ropes: 1. Take one rope and make it into the shape of a figure-eight. 2. Taking the second rope in your hand, you’ll want to feed its working end around the knot where the working end of the first rope is. 3. Keep both ropes parallel while feeding the second knot in. 4. Pull gently on the working ends, then on the standing lines, alternating between the two until the knot is tight and symmetrical.     For more information about how  Tampa Yacht Sales   can help you find the boat of your dreams contact  Shane Faunce at (727) 513-7615  for more information or view our current listings.

My Wife and I took a very nice trip on this sloop with the captain and his mate for a day cruise with about 10 other folks. Of course the British Virgin islands provide a great back drop for a leisure cruise through the many islands. We went from Virgin Gorda past the Dogs and out to Cooper for a swim and snorkel before lunch onshore there at the club restaurant. The whole way we were spoiled with the shipside amenities drinks / snacks, and the captain's tales of his islands cruises the for 25 years. All in all it was a real nice laid back day cruise, just the thing to pass the day when you're on vacation. This was the kind of getaway day I go to the Caribbean for in the middle of a long Midwestern Winter.

La Boheme - The Gypsy of the Sea

Half Day Charters

Morning half day charters start at 8:30 and end at 12:30. Afternoon half day charters begin at 1:30 and end at 5:30.

Your group will meet the captain at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and board La Boheme at approximately 8:30 (or 1:30). The Captain will give you a few ideas for your customized itinerary and then set sail promptly. You may choose to sail to Cooper Island. Once there, your group will most likely climb into the dinghy and head over to Salt Island for a snorkel on the famous Wreck of the Rhone. You may prefer to kayak around the anchorage or simply soak up the sun's rays on a float. The sturdy swim ladder makes it easy to get in and out of the water and dinghy. After that you will head back to the boat for a quick rinse off with the deck shower. Then relax in the cockpit with a refreshingly cool beverage and cheese and crackers. The captain will then pull the anchor and head off for another beautiful sail back to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda.

A couple enjoys sailing aboard La Boheme

Full Day Charters

Your group will board the boat at 9:00 in the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor. You may choose to sail to the coral island of Anegada. You will arrive at Anegada around 11:00. Everyone will hop into the dinghy and head to shore by the Anegada Reef Hotel. Taxis are available to take you on a tour of the island. You may sit at the Anegada Reef Hotel beach bar to chat for a bit and have lunch, or taxi over to the north side of the island where you can have a delicious meal at the Big Bamboo located at Loblolly Bay. Snorkeling is wonderful there and the view is simply gorgeous! It will draw you back if you are ever given the opportunity another time. While driving back, you may have the chance to catch a glimpse of the flamingos that inhabit the island. They are quite a sight! When back on board, your party will enjoy refreshing drinks along with hors d'oeuvres before another magnificent sail back to Virgin Gorda, where you will arrive at approximately 5 o'clock.

Madison catches a red hind fish!

Sunset Cruise

The sunset cruise departs at 4:30. You will experience the most resplendent sunset over Tortola while you gently glide over the Sir Francis Drake Channel. The trade winds will fill the sails and allow you to feel that peaceful connection with the wind and sea. Having a cocktail or two while snacking on conch fritters is really a lovely way to end a day in the British Virgin Islands. The time of the sunset varies depending upon the time of the year. The entire sunset cruise should last about two hours.

If you plan to go sailing in the Caribbean, you have an idyllic vacation ahead of you. Whether you choose to borrow a small boat from your hotel or plan to rent a fully-crewed yacht and explore for a week or two, this is a chance to move at your own pace, surrounded by sea and sky. You'll be able to enjoy beaches and coves that landlubbers can't reach and to see the islands as Columbus did hundreds of years ago. The following islands offer some of the best sailing in the Caribbean.

Often referred to as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, the British Virgin Islands offer nearly perfect sailing conditions: consistent trade winds blowing from the northeast at 10 to 25 knots, clear water and about 60 islands and cays to explore in an area that's 32 miles long and 15 miles wide. Tortola, the largest island, is the main starting point, and many operators are available to rent bareboat craft or crewed yachts, depending on your skills and interests. More than 100 yachts take part in the BVI Spring Regatta, a three-day festival that's one of the most exciting sailing events in the Caribbean.

We Never Underestimate Your Dreams

5 nautical knots you must know: bowline, cleat hitch, clove hitch, slip knot, trucker’s hitch.

You can learn a lot about the skill of a sailor by how he ties up at the dock and squares away running rigging. Are the lines neat and secure? Are the spring lines tight and bow / stern lines appropriately loose? How about the sheets? To accomplish the basic seamanship, there are a lot of knots out there, but all you have to know and know well is a handful to be worth your salt. I consider knowing how to tie a bowline, cleat hitch, clove hitch, and slip knot the most important. Combining these knots you can also make two variations of one of the handiest knots around – “the truckers hitch.” Knot tying videos shown here are courtesy the excellent Animated Knots website .

Bowline The bowline is the prototypical sailor knot. Anytime you want to make a loop, tie a bowline. It is easily undone if tied correctly though often butchered in a usable but quasi-bowlinesque version. Make sure you leave the bitter end long because bowlines settle a little before locking in position, and you do not want the bitter end to slip through the knot. Only limitation is tying a bowline when the line is under load – a common problem when securing a boat to a piling. It is best to hang a bowline around the piling and then tighten up the standing end that attaches to the boat.

Cleat Hitch The standing end of that bowline hung over a piling where the line attaches to the boat is usually a cleat. Often the dockside end is also a cleat. Believe or not you can hitch a line incorrectly to the cleat in a number of ways. The first way is hitching such that the the bitter end lies awkwardly over the knot instead of neatly tucked into it. The second way is having the standing end run away from the cleat instead of around it. While such mistakes are unlikely to lead to the knot untying, they could cause chafing or make the line harder to untie. The last tip for tying a line to a cleat nicely is to do something organised with the bitter end. You could wrap it around the cleat, make a spiral on the dock, make a fancy rope chain, or anything else. Doing something makes it easier to avoid tripping on the end and to untie the cleat when needed.

Clove Hitch The clove hitch is a simple knot to tightly and semi-permanently secure a line. It is handy to tie up fenders to life lines, secure halyards, secure jerry jugs, or tie off a dock line to a piling. When finished with a bight, a clove hitch is easy to loosen. A clove hitch requires some kind of cylindrical point to tie off to such as a handrail, stanchion base, or piling. There are a bunch of similar knots that can be used interchangeably including what Chapman’s recommends as superior in every way – the buntline. The clove hitch is the traditional seaman version.

Slip Knot A very simple yet useful knot aboard is the slip knot. It is made by tightening a bight through a loop. This simple combination provides an easy stopper end for your genoa sheets, so they do not pull through the car tracks and a handy loop to use instead of a bowline if you are not carrying load. It is quick to tie and untie.

Trucker’s Hitch A good example of what happens when you can dance and tie the knots above at the same time are novel combinations such as the Trucker’s hitch. The Trucker’s hitch is simply a combination of a knot that makes a loop and a hitch. For instance you can tie a slip knot with a long bitter end. Then you go around a handrail, piling, stanchion, etc and back through the loop made by the slip knot. Finally you use that as a purchase to tighten up the line and hitch it off that same fixed point. Often you find yourself on a boat trying to seriously tighten up a line and without some type of purchase you will never be able to do it. The Trucker’s hitch is the easiest solution and a must know nautical knot.

Summary So above I covered the bowline, cleat hitch, clove hitch, slip, and trucker’s hitch knots. Once you get down the basics, you get to the level where you do not just tie memorised knots but understand the reasons behind them and possibly combine them in novel situations. Another important genre of knots relate to neatly coiling and stowing lines – a topic to look into for any sailor worth their salt. Please feel free to ask questions in the comment section below about the knots above. For more information, excellent animations, and videos, I recommend Animated Knots and for you to carry around 2 meter length of line and practice tying knots all the time. If you have a favourite knot you use aboard routinely, please share.

This knot is excellent for creating a ladder or step up if you need to scrabble up onto the boom or higher. It is also very handy for helping those less flexible to board the yacht from a side-on pontoon. It’s also very good for recovering crew from the water if they are tired or incapacitated in some way.

Each loop can be passed up each arm to the armpit and shoulder. A special application I use this knot for is creating hand and foot holds on a line that we tow crew or my grandkids behind the yacht in flat seas under power.

Lots of fun!
