CNB 76 boat test – more boat for your money

The CNB 76 offers elegance, style and size for a very competitive price. Toby Hodges tests this new flagship from Groupe Beneteau, a boat made possible by her innovative build method

Product Overview

The real eye-opener is that this is a production boat from leaders in that field, Groupe Beneteau. She sits in the same price sector as premium 60-65ft yachts. In fact, for the price of the CNB 76, you’d get €500,000 change from a Swan 60!

Five years ago builders CNB brought out the Bordeaux 60, 40 of which have since launched. It offered style and size for a comparatively low (under €1 million) asking price. But how have they managed to build a 76-footer that starts at €2 million (a similar sized custom boat would cost at least double that)?

With the Beneteau group’s investment, CNB devised an innovative new modular build scheme that has allowed them to construct the entire interior of the 76 outside the hull. The four modules are built to an exact tolerance, so they slot into place within millimetres of their 3D design. The benefit is simultaneous construction of hull and interior, which brings the build time down to five or six months, and so reduces cost.

Nicely balanced sailing that's easy on an autopilot

Nicely balanced sailing that’s easy on an autopilot

The key objectives of the finished product were style, performance, a decksaloon, a proper crew area and a tender garage. After splashing the first 76 in August, CNB commendably took Leo on a six-month sea trial from Bordeaux to Turkey. Her builders and engineers joined for various legs for valuable sea-time experience.

Length = long legs

When we tested the Bordeaux 60 five years ago it was on a delivery from Barcelona to Cannes, a three-day sail to get under her skin. To its credit, CNB was keen we replicate that by giving us a lengthy spell aboard the multifaceted 76.

This is a big yacht, so it was quite daunting to be asked to pilot her off her central Palma dock within minutes of boarding. But bow and stern thrusters counteract the deficiencies of manoeuvring under power with dual rudders – and her joystick steering made life simple.

Our course from Palma Bay predominantly involved a close reach, where she maintained a consistent 10.5–11 knots in a Force 4-5. In fact, consistency is a real asset of the 76’s sailing credentials. She’ll match single-figure windspeeds up to nine knots. And with winds in the teens, she’ll sit at double figures speeds all day. Although there was only 4-6 knots of true wind for our return trip to Palma, we still managed 0.5-1 knot more than the wind speed with sheets slightly cracked.

The coachroof is a stylish and clever design. Low enough to maintain end-to-end visibility, it still provides five star views from inside the raised saloon

Heading into a short swell close-hauled, she felt stable and powerful. When heeled onto a chine, she hits a comfortably stable mode, resisting any urge to head into the wind. The dual rudders felt typically light, so helmsmen used to a single rudder may miss the associated feedback. But the upshot to the almost neutral feel of the 76 is nicely balanced sailing that’s easy on an autopilot.

The outboard helm seats are an ideal place to steer from in comfort and full visibility. Navigation information is all to hand thanks to compact pods by the wheels. When standing at these aft helms, however, I did feel a little exposed, especially in a swell, with only thigh-level guardrails behind. Apparently the central pushpit support will be raised.

With the asymmetric set, reaching speeds hit more than 11 knots, but the swell made the motion quite uncomfortable. The sail and rig pulsated between waves as they hit us on the forward quarter. Skipper Marc Renwick explained how they normally use the A5 as a versatile, easy to use furling sail for cruising and charters. A faster mastbase halyard winch would be beneficial, however, particularly when hoisting this sail.

An aluminium mast comes as standard, but a Hall Spars carbon alternative is offered. We had the 3m taller performance option, which increases sail area by six or seven per cent. Even if in-mast furling is chosen, this carbon mast still apparently ends up lighter than an alloy one.

Once nestled in the invitingly protected north-facing anchorage of Cabrera, we had a good opportunity to explore the boat. There is a real superyacht feel to her deck and a clever floating theme to the styling. The jet tender was launched fuss-free in moments from the garage, paddling boards were inflated via a high-speed pump, and fins and snorkels brought out to make the most of the fading light.

At anchor the CNB 76 provides a comfortable platform

I like the way stowage has been well designed to accommodate these accessories and make them easily accessible. On-deck stowage in general is very generous, if you include the large sail locker forward.

CNB Superyachts

Chrisco, an all-carbon composite French yacht

In 1987, CNB (Constructions Navales Bordeaux) settled on the banks of the Garonne River, a few hundred yards from the greatest Bordeaux vineyards, on a portion of the historical Chantiers et Ateliers du Sud-Ouest. CNB thus heired a long tradition of bordelaise naval construction: oldest traces of naval construction in Bordeaux go back to 1467! CNB is situated on a 100,000 m 2 lot with 44,000 m 2 of covered buildings and has a 300 meter waterfront quay. In 20 years, more than 55 custom yachts have been built: sailing, motor, aluminum, composite, monohulls, catamarans…

In 1992, to effectuate the investment necessary to becoming an industrial operation, CNB aligned with the Bénéteau group , world leader in pleasure sailing construction and listed in the second market of the Paris stock exchange. Since 1997, CNB includes workboats ships building and Lagoon . The excellent reputation of the workboats and Lagoon’s position as a world leader contributed to the constant expansion of the boatyard, with an important and ambitious investment program for the coming years.  In order to broaden our range, a new brand was created in 2008. The line Bordeaux unites the know-how of CNB Division industrialization and the sailing yacht conception. This semi-custom line in full development is characterized by the 60’ and 80’ with their impressively calculated price. An initial step was made towards composite construction in 1993 with the undertaking of the finishing and interior fittings for the 25 meter maxi racers La Poste and Merit , (Whitbread 1993/94). In 1996 the team, specializing in this material was put into place bringing an unequalled experience of 15 years, during which time more than 150 catamarans destined for cruising and many racing boats were built. From 1999, the shipyard signed contracts for the first composite yachts. The first launching, Blue Sky Messenger (CNB 65), was in the first part of 2000 and since then we have built the celebrated Joy (CNB 74), Only Now (CNB 104), Simeron (CNB 82), Hamilton II (CNB 117), the CNB 105 and now the CNB 100 Chrisco, an all-composite sailboat. For CNB, it has been a real challenge to build a 30m yacht with a modern contemporary allure while maintaining the particular savoir-faire for which CNB is renown: built to sail in heavy seas as well as in the bay of Saint-Tropez.

The CNB 100, is an extraordinary yacht, with elongated lines, spacious roofs voluminous cockpit and unusual glass panels areas. Built with the desire to design an extremely fast boat born of a pure and luminous concept but with a very comfortable interior that reflects the owner’s taste. In close and constant collaboration with the owner and the builder, the naval architect Luca Brenta & Co. Yacht Designers and interior designer Wetzels Brown Partners developed a yacht that will make her mark. A new challenge, as CNB likes them, that brings us into the exclusive world of contemporary yachts.

The Ultimate Guide to Nizhny Novgorod (and Beyond!)

Nizhny Novgorod… The city where I spent eight months of my life and never regretted a single day of it. My dear reader, if you are reading these lines, it is likely that you are planning a trip to this wonderful city yourself. Perhaps, you do not know where to start. I too was in your shoes so I would know. Maybe, you do not know where to start because you do not know much Russian. I know, I know… Let us fix this severe injustice to one gem of a city once and for all, right now. Best of Nizhny Novgorod

Alright, I can almost hear you say: “oh geez man, let me just stay in Nizhny for a few months to make sure that I experience everything you wrote.” I suppose you are right, not all will study in Nizhny, nor work there, some will just pass by and so on. If you do not have months to explore the city, but only a few days, perhaps just one, what then? Where to go and what to eat? Well, without much humility, I would strongly recommend you visit the following spots first and eat at these fine establishments before anywhere else. These are the must haves of Nizhny, according to yours truly!

DO AND SEE!

  • See the city’s Kremlin with your own eyes, and maybe visit the State Russian Art Museum there if you have the time.
  • Go to the lower side to gawk at the Cathedral of Aleksander Nevsky and all the goodies it holds.
  • Spend some time in the gorgeous Switzerland Park and watch a sunset there, or perhaps travel to the stars at Planetarium 1.
  • Appreciate the unique ornaments of the State Bank on the main pedestrian street, Bol’shaya Pokrovskaya.
  • Walk down Chkalov’s Stairs and then walk along the Volga until you visit the beautiful Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

cnb superyachts

EAT AND DRINK!

  • Savour the finest ramen this city (and perhaps the entire Federation) has to offer at Fukuramen.
  • Eat some decent pizza at either Yula or Pech, depending on which bank of the Oka you are exploring at the time.
  • Enjoy the company and service of the finest people in town by grabbing a mug of beer in Freakadely.
  • Go to Öö if you want to taste the best cocktails in town instead, in an almost hidden basement no less!
  • Head to Gellert for the best beer in town as well as some quick and rather affordable grubs.
  • Have some Cinnabon rolls at Cinnabon alongside with a hot drink of your choice to survive the Russian winter.
  • Try a business lunch at Skoba, with their own unique takes on many modern dishes.

cnb superyachts

Well, there you go. Almost a year spent in an unassuming “little” Russian city, one that surprised me at every turn, and one that made me say “thank you” to my former self for choosing to come here just a few months earlier. It was an amazing stay to say the least, and I did not even explore the outlying areas of the city, so, in all honesty, this guide can be expanded sometime in the future quite easily. I cannot say for sure whether I will be back to Nizhny at any point, but if I do, I know that I will be happy to do so. It feels quite weird to be able to put months of my experience into such a short guide, but if this will help anyone out there who is willing to come and enjoy this city, then I guess it will be doing its job just right. I wish you all good luck and best of times!

Money Report

CNBC

5 things to know before the stock market opens Thursday

By jacob pramuk,cnbc • published august 22, 2024 • updated on august 22, 2024 at 5:41 am.

  • Stocks rose again on hopes for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September, adding to a mostly steady run since a selloff earlier this month.
  • Ford scaled back its electric vehicle plans.
  • Paramount extended the window during which it can listen to competing offers to its merger agreement with Skydance.

Here are the most important news items that investors need to start their trading day:

📺 Los Angeles news 24/7: Watch NBC4 free wherever you are

1. Rate rally

After a selloff prompted by fears about the economy earlier this month, markets have largely been steady. The three major U.S. averages rose again Wednesday as investors anticipated an interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's September meeting. All eyes will to turn Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's comments Friday at the central bank's Jackson Hole symposium for clues about how large the rate reduction could be. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted their ninth positive session in 10 on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average had its sixth winning day in seven. Follow live market updates here.

2. Cutting in September?

A September interest rate cut looks all but certain. Minutes from the July meeting of Federal Reserve policymakers signaled the central bank will "likely" ease monetary policy if economic data continued about as expected. Many Fed officials appeared confident inflation was easing toward the bank's 2% target, and others noted the labor market appeared to be weakening. The release of the Fed meeting minutes came hours after the Labor Department said the U.S. economy created 818,000 fewer jobs than initially reported in the 12 months through March. While the numbers still paint a picture of solid employment growth, they added fuel to expectations that the Fed will lower borrowing rates soon.

3. Electric fail

cnb superyachts

This strategy for required withdrawals in retirement can help you avoid IRS penalties

cnb superyachts

Alex Cooper, host of ‘Call her Daddy,' signed a $125 million deal with SiriusXM: ‘She's selling a proven track record,' says recruiter

All along the U.S. auto industry, companies are scaling back electric vehicle ambitions. The latest move came Wednesday, when Ford said it would delay production of an electric truck at a new plant in Tennessee and scraps plans for a three-row electric SUV. The Detroit automaker said it would instead focus on hybrid models and commercial electric vehicles, in a move CFO John Lawler said would allow Ford to to "focus in where we have competitive advantage." The company said it would take a special noncash charge of $400 million related to the move.

4. A mountain of offers

Paramount Global 's takeover saga is not done yet. The company extended the window in which it can receive competing offers to its merger agreement with Skydance by 15 days. 5. Back on the bike

Peloton 's turnaround is starting to take hold. The connected fitness company's shares spiked after it said it significantly cut losses in its fiscal fourth quarter and would focus on profitability over growth in the year ahead. Peloton also saw sales grow — only slightly — for the first time since its holiday quarter in 2021. The results come amid a shift in the fitness industry , as Peloton and rivals focus more on strength training to meet changing consumer habits.

Bordeaux 60

The Bordeaux 60 is the first model of the CNB semi-custom range, built by CNB: as such, she takes full advantage of an over twenty years expertise in the design and building of superyachts.

With Briand Yacht Design for the exterior and the interior by Couëdel Hugon Design (International Superyacht Awards in 2003 & 2007), the Bordeaux 60 combines modernity with original lines, a large number of storage spaces, performance under sail and easy manœuvring with a reduced crew.

Since 1987, close to fifty yachts built and launched by CNB roam the seas : Grand Bleu Vintage, Only Now, Don juan, Mari Cha II, Simeron, Deep Blue to name just a few of them.

CNB was awarded in 2002 by the International Superyacht Society the Design Award in the category Best Sail 23 – 36 m in length. The following year CNB received the Grand Prix de l’Elégance at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez.
